0:00:200:00:22

Put your hands behind your back now!

0:00:220:00:24

Here at the Fake Britain house,

0:00:240:00:26

we'll reveal the fakes that are flooding the market.

0:00:260:00:29

Conning people like you and me and making money for the criminals.

0:00:290:00:33

We'll investigate the fraudsters

0:00:330:00:35

who are selling us something that isn't real and could be dangerous.

0:00:350:00:40

And we'll help you avoid falling for a fake.

0:00:400:00:43

Today on Fake Britain...

0:00:450:00:46

The movie has won the hearts of children across the world

0:00:470:00:50

but the fake merchandise has left one little girl scarred for life.

0:00:500:00:54

The blood was absolutely flowing out of her face.

0:00:540:00:58

The fake hi-tech coat that could have chilling consequences.

0:00:580:01:02

If a consumer was counting on a jacket for their survival

0:01:020:01:06

and they bought a counterfeit jacket,

0:01:060:01:08

that could result in a life-and-death situation.

0:01:080:01:11

Fake hair extensions that led to the worst bad hair day ever.

0:01:110:01:15

It was a shock, like, "Oh, my God.

0:01:150:01:18

"Have you seriously ripped half my hair out getting them out?"

0:01:180:01:21

And the fraudsters trying to steal millions

0:01:210:01:23

from taxpayers and charities.

0:01:230:01:26

It makes you intensely angry that somebody could come

0:01:260:01:29

and take money away from hard-working people.

0:01:290:01:32

Even if you don't have young children,

0:01:390:01:41

you can't have escaped the phenomenon that is the Disney blockbuster,

0:01:410:01:45

Frozen.

0:01:450:01:47

It quickly became the highest-grossing animated film

0:01:470:01:50

of all time and demand for the merchandise has been huge -

0:01:500:01:53

with toys, dolls, games and much more flying off the shelves.

0:01:530:01:58

They just can't make it fast enough.

0:01:580:02:00

Little wonder then that the fakers have grabbed their slice

0:02:000:02:03

of the Frozen pie.

0:02:030:02:05

But the consequences for some kids have been truly shocking.

0:02:050:02:09

Frozen tells the story of Princess Elsa

0:02:110:02:14

who turns everything she touches to ice and snow,

0:02:140:02:17

-and her little sister, Anna...

-Really?

-..who sets out to save her.

0:02:170:02:20

That's my sister.

0:02:200:02:21

Kids who adored the film went even crazier for the merchandise,

0:02:230:02:27

with dresses, dolls and soft toys all selling out at Christmas time.

0:02:270:02:31

Parents who couldn't get their hands on the toys in the shops

0:02:310:02:34

quickly turned to the internet, where the fakers were only too happy

0:02:340:02:37

to fill the demand.

0:02:370:02:39

But give these fakes to a child and their smiles may turn to tears.

0:02:400:02:44

One dad with a Frozen-mad daughter is Stuart Broll,

0:02:480:02:51

from Stockton-on-Tees.

0:02:510:02:52

My daughter Lydia is pretty much obsessed with Frozen,

0:02:520:02:56

like most girls are these days.

0:02:560:02:58

She loves it.

0:03:000:03:01

Like any loving dad,

0:03:020:03:03

Stuart wanted to make his daughter's dreams come true.

0:03:030:03:06

So, he bought her some Frozen toys.

0:03:060:03:09

I'd been looking online one night, looked on eBay

0:03:090:03:12

and they've got a massive selection of Frozen products.

0:03:120:03:16

Stuart chose a watch with a bendy metal strap

0:03:160:03:19

that would wrap around his daughter's slim wrist.

0:03:190:03:22

Known as slap or snap bands,

0:03:220:03:24

these accessories come in a wide range of designs

0:03:240:03:27

and are popular with children,

0:03:270:03:28

who enjoy slapping them round their wrists.

0:03:280:03:31

Lydia is quite small and I did have trouble, obviously,

0:03:310:03:34

getting a watch to fit her.

0:03:340:03:35

So, I thought with it being a snap band,

0:03:350:03:37

it would be the best alternative.

0:03:370:03:39

It would actually fit round her hand neat and tidy

0:03:390:03:41

and it wouldn't fall off.

0:03:410:03:42

Stuart also bought a stuffed toy in the shape of Sven the reindeer,

0:03:440:03:48

one of the characters from Frozen.

0:03:480:03:50

But when the toys arrived, Stuart made an appalling discovery.

0:03:500:03:54

On inspection, I found that the metal legs inside

0:03:540:03:58

was actually sticking through the outer covering of the animal.

0:03:580:04:01

I couldn't even think about the damage that

0:04:010:04:03

could have done.

0:04:030:04:04

I mean, it's horrific.

0:04:040:04:05

You know, it's a metal rod that's sticking through.

0:04:050:04:08

The amount of damage that could have caused,

0:04:080:04:10

it's not even worth thinking about to be quite honest.

0:04:100:04:13

The slap watch was equally deadly.

0:04:140:04:16

Sadly, on inspection and cutting it open,

0:04:160:04:20

I found a metal tape measure to be used inside.

0:04:200:04:24

Shockingly, the wristband was simply made

0:04:240:04:26

from a standard builder's measuring tape

0:04:260:04:28

that had been cut to the right shape and covered with cheap plastic.

0:04:280:04:32

It is absolutely razor-sharp down the sides

0:04:320:04:35

and also at the corners where it's actually been cut down.

0:04:350:04:39

Thankfully, Stuart managed to spot the danger

0:04:390:04:41

and remove the toys before Lydia was hurt.

0:04:410:04:44

I'm absolutely disgusted that people are actually selling these products

0:04:440:04:47

in the first place.

0:04:470:04:49

That could potentially harm or even kill a child.

0:04:490:04:52

But one father who wasn't so lucky is Nathan Stodden from Cornwall.

0:04:550:04:59

Nathan's dad to three girls - Chelsea, Bethany and Madison.

0:04:590:05:04

Like other girls their age, they too are fanatical about Frozen.

0:05:040:05:08

-Who is your favourite character?

-Elsa.

0:05:080:05:10

Elsa's your favourite character?

0:05:100:05:12

Why do you like Elsa?

0:05:120:05:13

I like Elsa because she's got magic powers.

0:05:140:05:19

When six-year-old Bethany and three-year-old Madison

0:05:200:05:23

were invited to a friend's Frozen-themed birthday party

0:05:230:05:26

one Saturday afternoon, they were delighted.

0:05:260:05:29

After the event, both girls were given a party bag

0:05:290:05:32

containing a Frozen slap wristband.

0:05:320:05:34

They absolutely loved them.

0:05:340:05:36

As soon as Bethany had the wristband, yeah,

0:05:360:05:38

it was on and she's slapping away and playing with it. Weren't you?

0:05:380:05:44

Bethany loved the wristband so much she didn't take it off

0:05:460:05:50

and was still wearing it the next morning.

0:05:500:05:51

Then I was in the kitchen doing the dishes.

0:05:530:05:55

The kids were upstairs playing and bouncing around.

0:05:550:05:58

And I heard a massive scream from upstairs.

0:05:580:06:02

Nathan was about to be confronted with a shocking sight.

0:06:040:06:07

Bethany had come walking into the kitchen with footprints of blood.

0:06:070:06:11

Blood dripping down her face with a massive open wound,

0:06:120:06:17

which was very, very deep and wide.

0:06:170:06:19

It was like something out of a horror movie.

0:06:190:06:21

Literally, it was just a trail of disaster.

0:06:210:06:24

Poor little Bethany had caught her face on the edge

0:06:240:06:27

of the fake wristband, causing an inch-long cut in her cheek.

0:06:270:06:31

Bethany was in hysterics when she came in to me

0:06:310:06:33

and I was in a massive state of shock from looking at it.

0:06:330:06:36

You know, my beautiful daughter had a massive gash on her face,

0:06:360:06:40

which frightened me.

0:06:400:06:41

When Nathan examined the wristband,

0:06:420:06:44

he discovered that just like Stuart's,

0:06:440:06:46

it contained a cut up tape measure.

0:06:460:06:49

This is the one that actually did the damage itself.

0:06:490:06:51

This is absolutely razor-sharp.

0:06:510:06:53

It actually entered Bethany's face

0:06:530:06:56

to just below where my thumb is now.

0:06:560:06:58

That's how deep it actually went into her face,

0:06:580:07:01

which is nearly 10mm.

0:07:010:07:04

Bethany was rushed to hospital, where the doctors were able

0:07:040:07:06

to stop the bleeding and close the wound.

0:07:060:07:09

But she may be scarred for life.

0:07:090:07:11

It really hurted.

0:07:110:07:13

And how do you feel now?

0:07:130:07:15

-Scared.

-It's sad, isn't it?

0:07:150:07:17

You don't like seeing the scar on your face, do you?

0:07:170:07:20

Even after what has happened, Nathan still believes

0:07:200:07:23

they've been very lucky.

0:07:230:07:24

If it had slashed her wrist or caught an artery

0:07:240:07:27

or anything like that, the doctors would have really struggled.

0:07:270:07:31

And certainly within the time it took me

0:07:310:07:33

to take her to my local hospital,

0:07:330:07:36

she would have lost a serious amount of blood.

0:07:360:07:39

But it's not just the occasional slap band or stuffed toy

0:07:400:07:43

slipping through.

0:07:430:07:44

Faking Frozen products is a boom industry.

0:07:440:07:47

Huge container-loads of fake Disney merchandise

0:07:470:07:50

have been secretly arriving at British ports

0:07:500:07:53

and no-one knows how much of it has found its way into people's homes.

0:07:530:07:56

It's Trading Standards' job to try and stop the deluge.

0:07:580:08:02

And in Nottinghamshire, one team has successfully intercepted a huge haul

0:08:020:08:05

of fake Frozen merchandise, which was being sold from a shop in their area.

0:08:050:08:10

It was just everywhere and all tat.

0:08:100:08:13

Paul Gretton and Robert Martinez were part of the team

0:08:140:08:17

that seized the toys.

0:08:170:08:19

We first came across this as a result of a tip-off

0:08:190:08:21

from a member of the public.

0:08:210:08:23

We were rather surprised to find this huge quantity

0:08:230:08:25

but I think that reflects the popularity of the film

0:08:250:08:28

and how much demand there is for this stuff.

0:08:280:08:30

They're an obvious fake because on the back...

0:08:300:08:32

..you've got the impression of buttons but no actual buttons.

0:08:330:08:36

And there's no screw for the battery compartment as well.

0:08:360:08:39

So, the batteries would be accessible to little kids.

0:08:390:08:41

Delightful little thing(!)

0:08:410:08:42

What's really surprised me -

0:08:430:08:45

and I've been in Trading Standards a long time -

0:08:450:08:49

is the really poor quality of some of this.

0:08:490:08:52

Ooh, the leg's come off.

0:08:520:08:54

This is some of the worst fake stuff I've seen in 30 years.

0:08:540:08:57

It's not robust enough to be given to children.

0:08:570:08:59

It's really, really shockingly poor stuff.

0:08:590:09:02

In total, they've seized over 700 items, including umbrellas,

0:09:020:09:06

wallets, bags, alarm clocks and much more.

0:09:060:09:09

-The story on the back makes no sense.

-No.

0:09:090:09:12

"Anna's sister cold snow queen to her under a curse."

0:09:120:09:15

And so it goes on. It doesn't make any sense at all.

0:09:150:09:18

-They're at least £20.

-Really?

-Yeah.

-Goodness.

0:09:180:09:22

What is a little bit unusual is fake product normally sells for less

0:09:220:09:26

than the market value.

0:09:260:09:27

But the demand is so high for this particular product

0:09:270:09:30

that it's actually selling at market value,

0:09:300:09:32

what the real stuff is selling for.

0:09:320:09:34

As well as being poor quality,

0:09:350:09:37

many of the toys are potentially dangerous.

0:09:370:09:39

These dresses could be highly flammable.

0:09:390:09:42

Nasty material it's made out of.

0:09:420:09:44

There's just no thought given to the actual safety of the product.

0:09:450:09:49

It could go up in a ball of flames, or it could melt onto the child.

0:09:490:09:52

Also of serious concern are hooded coats

0:09:530:09:56

with chords that could strangle.

0:09:560:09:58

They're really nasty.

0:09:580:10:00

You know, I thought we'd seen the back of this sort of thing,

0:10:000:10:02

I really did.

0:10:020:10:03

The problem with that is, if that gets caught -

0:10:030:10:06

and the classic one is when they're coming down a slide

0:10:060:10:08

in a playground - and pulls, it actually forms a noose.

0:10:080:10:12

And there were deaths.

0:10:120:10:13

Two to three deaths a year before the law was changed on that

0:10:130:10:15

some years ago.

0:10:150:10:17

So, that's the real worry with those.

0:10:170:10:19

Children's coats with drawstrings that pull all the way through

0:10:190:10:23

are now banned in the UK.

0:10:230:10:25

Coats for children under seven

0:10:250:10:26

aren't even allowed to have decorative chords.

0:10:260:10:29

I don't think I'm exaggerating by saying that

0:10:290:10:31

the worst that could happen with some of this product

0:10:310:10:33

is there could be a fatality.

0:10:330:10:35

And Nottinghamshire County Council's Trading Standards aren't alone.

0:10:350:10:39

Enforcement agencies have been seizing goods

0:10:390:10:42

up and down the country.

0:10:420:10:44

At the port of Dover, a lorry-load of fake toys,

0:10:440:10:47

including nearly 500 fake Frozen dolls,

0:10:470:10:50

was impounded in the run-up to Christmas 2014.

0:10:500:10:54

Meanwhile, at Stansted Airport, dolls and accessories worth over £8,000

0:10:540:10:58

were confiscated from shipments arriving from Malaysia and China.

0:10:580:11:02

Paul finds the whole thing very frustrating.

0:11:030:11:07

They've not given a care to the safety of the product.

0:11:070:11:09

They just want to make the money while the film is at the height

0:11:090:11:12

of its popularity and then they'll walk away from it.

0:11:120:11:15

But, unfortunately, I don't think they should be able to walk away

0:11:150:11:19

from potentially killing a child.

0:11:190:11:21

For the Stodden family,

0:11:210:11:23

their encounter with a fake Frozen toy

0:11:230:11:25

is an experience they're never going to be able to forget.

0:11:250:11:28

I think the difficult thing for ourselves is the childhood years of,

0:11:280:11:31

certainly school photos, are going to be haunted by

0:11:310:11:34

such a horrible scar on such a beautiful girl's face.

0:11:340:11:37

It's...

0:11:370:11:38

It's quite...it's quite emotional, isn't it? Hm?

0:11:380:11:41

When you buy a coat to keep you warm, well, you want it to keep you warm.

0:11:500:11:55

A parka filled with goose down is amongst the very warmest there is -

0:11:550:11:59

as this one should be.

0:11:590:12:00

But it's a fake.

0:12:000:12:02

Buy a real down coat and you'll be toasty.

0:12:020:12:05

Buy a fake, you'll be left out in the cold.

0:12:050:12:08

Down-filled parkas were designed for those working

0:12:100:12:13

in the very coldest conditions.

0:12:130:12:14

But they're now a regular sight on our high streets during winter.

0:12:140:12:18

One brand of down-filled coat is called Canada Goose.

0:12:190:12:22

Kevin Spreekmeester is Chief Marketing Officer.

0:12:240:12:27

Canada Goose is a nearly 60-year-old company

0:12:270:12:32

that manufactures some of the world's best down outerwear.

0:12:320:12:35

The company makes coats for anyone who wants to stay warm -

0:12:360:12:39

from shoppers out and about on a frosty day,

0:12:390:12:41

to rugged outdoor workers in the coldest places on earth.

0:12:410:12:45

We make warm jackets for the city.

0:12:450:12:47

We make warm jackets for athletes and dog mushers

0:12:470:12:50

and researchers in Antarctica.

0:12:500:12:52

For these people, it's a tool of their trade.

0:12:520:12:55

It's equipment. It's necessary. It's a survival piece.

0:12:550:12:59

Of course, you don't have to be an Arctic researcher to wear one

0:12:590:13:02

of these coats.

0:13:020:13:03

In fact, they're now regularly worn as winter outerwear

0:13:030:13:06

in towns and cities.

0:13:060:13:07

But the manufacturers say they're still designed to withstand

0:13:080:13:11

the most extreme temperatures.

0:13:110:13:13

We continually study jackets in cold chambers.

0:13:140:13:18

We continually look for improvements in fabrications and trims.

0:13:180:13:22

It's an ongoing process.

0:13:220:13:24

Of course, the fakers have spotted the chance to profit

0:13:260:13:29

from the company's success.

0:13:290:13:31

They are making coats that look like exact replicas

0:13:310:13:33

of their high-end designs but with none of the technical wizardry.

0:13:330:13:37

And for outdoor workers relying on their gear to protect them

0:13:380:13:41

from the elements, that could have serious consequences.

0:13:410:13:43

As Maya Plass found out.

0:13:450:13:48

-Come here.

-Maya is a marine biologist who spends her days

0:13:480:13:51

battling the weather around Britain's coastline.

0:13:510:13:54

I'm often outside so I spend a lot of time

0:13:540:13:57

just exploring the coastline,

0:13:570:13:58

whether it's doing rock pool rambles with children,

0:13:580:14:01

or whether it's diving as well and spending a lot of time on the water.

0:14:010:14:05

After a particularly cold day out on the boat,

0:14:060:14:09

Maya decided it was time to buy a new warm jacket.

0:14:090:14:12

Spotting a French website that had the coats on sale,

0:14:130:14:16

she jumped at the chance to grab a bargain.

0:14:160:14:19

And I knew friends that had had Canada Goose coats

0:14:190:14:21

and completely relied on them, even going on polar expeditions

0:14:210:14:24

and things as well.

0:14:240:14:25

So, I just felt that I couldn't lose the opportunity

0:14:250:14:28

of staying lovely and warm and dry for very cold, wet days

0:14:280:14:31

out on the sea.

0:14:310:14:33

Maya ordered a parka and a gilet, both on sale at a hefty discount.

0:14:350:14:39

But when the coats arrived, her hopes of staying warm and dry were dashed.

0:14:410:14:44

As soon as I got them out of the parcel,

0:14:450:14:47

the coat material just didn't feel quality.

0:14:470:14:50

It felt very cheap.

0:14:500:14:52

It felt like it wasn't going to be waterproof

0:14:520:14:54

and I knew that they were fakes.

0:14:540:14:56

The fake parka had none of the top-quality insulating features

0:14:580:15:01

that Maya was expecting.

0:15:010:15:03

You can see from some of the stitching here

0:15:030:15:05

that there's stitches loose.

0:15:050:15:07

That the material's really poor quality and isn't waterproof.

0:15:070:15:10

If I just get some water and just drop it on the top.

0:15:110:15:14

And if it's a really good waterproof coat, the water beads will stay.

0:15:140:15:19

But you can see already by leaving it on there,

0:15:190:15:21

it's completely soaked in.

0:15:210:15:22

There are problems with the fit too.

0:15:220:15:25

Not a very good hood.

0:15:250:15:26

SHE LAUGHS

0:15:260:15:28

Maya kicked herself for having been taken in by the fakers.

0:15:280:15:32

So, when I realised they were fake, I was genuinely really disappointed

0:15:320:15:35

cos I'd wasted my money.

0:15:350:15:37

I also felt a bit of an idiot.

0:15:370:15:38

I thought, "How could I have done something so stupid?"

0:15:380:15:41

But I realise that anyone can do it as well.

0:15:410:15:43

So, if you've bought one online,

0:15:440:15:46

how can you tell if you've been fooled?

0:15:460:15:49

So, what we have here is an authentic jacket.

0:15:490:15:52

And here we have a fake jacket.

0:15:520:15:54

The most obvious thing is the overall appearance

0:15:540:15:57

of the jackets.

0:15:570:15:59

This is our Arctic Tech fabric, which is a polycotton blend.

0:15:590:16:04

It's smart. It's covered in DWR, which is a water resistancy.

0:16:040:16:08

It doesn't crinkle like this one.

0:16:080:16:11

And, if you take a look at this, it just looks mangy.

0:16:110:16:14

It is worn and flimsy.

0:16:140:16:17

On the authentic jacket you have this, what we call our Arctic Disc.

0:16:170:16:22

And you can see the definition in the type.

0:16:220:16:25

There's not a thread out of place.

0:16:250:16:27

If you take a look at the fake jacket,

0:16:270:16:29

this is an ugly mess.

0:16:290:16:32

You can see the stitching on the inside of the label here.

0:16:320:16:36

Weird strands. The Arctic is messed up.

0:16:360:16:40

What's inside the fake coat is even worse.

0:16:400:16:43

These are two glasses filled with down

0:16:430:16:47

and what the counterfeiters put in their fake jackets.

0:16:470:16:51

So, we've had these analysed in a lab.

0:16:510:16:53

This one, the fake down, is 5% down.

0:16:530:16:56

It's 50% feathers

0:16:560:16:59

and the rest, who knows what.

0:16:590:17:02

Dust and dirt and whatever's on the factory floor.

0:17:020:17:06

This is down.

0:17:060:17:07

Down filaments are the underbelly of the bird that go under the feathers.

0:17:070:17:12

That's what keeps you warm.

0:17:120:17:14

The results of owning a fake coat like this could be serious.

0:17:140:17:19

If a consumer was counting on a jacket for their survival

0:17:190:17:23

and they bought a counterfeit jacket,

0:17:230:17:25

that could result in a life-and-death situation.

0:17:250:17:28

It's clear from looking at the fakes that the quality isn't up to scratch.

0:17:300:17:34

But how well do they perform in the cold?

0:17:340:17:36

At Loughborough University,

0:17:370:17:38

Professor George Havenith studies how people perform

0:17:380:17:41

in extreme temperatures.

0:17:410:17:43

What we're standing in front of here is our climatic chamber.

0:17:430:17:46

We have two of those.

0:17:460:17:47

And we can simulate most climates of the world in these chambers.

0:17:470:17:50

We can go from -30 to +50.

0:17:500:17:52

Or we can change the humidity as well

0:17:520:17:54

and make it very humid or very dry.

0:17:540:17:56

Professor Havenith tests both the real and fake coats

0:17:590:18:02

using a special heated mannequin.

0:18:020:18:05

He measures the amount of power required

0:18:050:18:07

to maintain the surface of the mannequin at 34 degrees,

0:18:070:18:10

normal skin temperature.

0:18:100:18:12

If the coat doesn't insulate the mannequin properly,

0:18:130:18:15

it'll require more energy to maintain that stable temperature.

0:18:150:18:19

The greater the amount of energy used,

0:18:200:18:22

the worse the coat is performing.

0:18:220:18:24

So, here we have the Canada Goose jacket

0:18:260:18:28

and next to it, we've put the fake jacket.

0:18:280:18:30

The trousers are the same.

0:18:300:18:31

So, you see the same colours for the trousers.

0:18:310:18:33

But if we look at the trunk and the arms,

0:18:330:18:35

you see very clearly the fake jacket has more red-type colours,

0:18:350:18:38

which means they have a higher heat loss.

0:18:380:18:40

Almost double than we have in the real jacket.

0:18:400:18:43

That would make a substantial difference,

0:18:430:18:44

if you would use this in extreme cold.

0:18:440:18:47

The professor also takes photos of the coats

0:18:470:18:49

using a thermal imaging camera to see how much heat is escaping.

0:18:490:18:53

If we look at both jackets here

0:18:530:18:55

you see that the Canada Goose jacket has a quite blue back area.

0:18:550:19:00

And this is the fake jacket and you see there is a lot more heat loss

0:19:000:19:03

along the seams, which separates the different pockets of insulation.

0:19:030:19:06

So, that means there is much more heat coming through,

0:19:060:19:08

which confirms what we saw with the mannequin.

0:19:080:19:11

There's no doubt that in the tests on the dummy,

0:19:120:19:14

the fake coat didn't insulate as well as the real one.

0:19:140:19:18

But what does that mean for someone wearing it in the cold?

0:19:180:19:20

Right, gentlemen. So, we've got the jackets.

0:19:210:19:24

So, to see how the coats perform on real people,

0:19:240:19:27

Professor Havenith is testing them on two colleagues.

0:19:270:19:30

Alex is wearing the fake jacket.

0:19:300:19:32

Simon's wearing the genuine one.

0:19:320:19:34

At the moment, I'm quite warm but I don't think so in a minute.

0:19:340:19:38

I think I'm going to be quite cold, so...

0:19:380:19:40

OK, let's take you guys in.

0:19:400:19:42

The climatic chamber is cooled to -20 degrees Celsius,

0:19:450:19:49

as cold as the average household freezer.

0:19:490:19:51

Alex and Simon will stay in there for half an hour.

0:19:520:19:55

Just make sure you're as warm as you can be.

0:19:550:19:57

My face is quite cold.

0:20:010:20:03

-Yeah.

-I'm not too bad.

0:20:030:20:06

It could be worse.

0:20:070:20:09

You've got the nice jacket.

0:20:090:20:10

So, what we're trying to do here is just to illustrate

0:20:120:20:15

how the jackets work on real people.

0:20:150:20:16

This will show us how people cool down.

0:20:160:20:18

And we would expect to see, with the infrared camera,

0:20:180:20:21

that actually Alex is losing more heat through the jacket.

0:20:210:20:24

So, he would feel colder and we would see more heat on the outside.

0:20:240:20:27

After 30 minutes at -20 degrees,

0:20:290:20:32

the differences between the two coats have become very clear.

0:20:320:20:36

I'm very, very cold now.

0:20:360:20:37

I've had enough.

0:20:380:20:39

After about 15 minutes, my nose hairs started to freeze.

0:20:390:20:43

Right, guys. I think you're cold enough.

0:20:430:20:46

But I do want to take a quick infrared picture.

0:20:460:20:49

Using the thermal imaging camera,

0:20:490:20:51

Professor Havenith takes a photo of Alex and Simon

0:20:510:20:54

to see how much heat is escaping from the coats.

0:20:540:20:57

OK, get your coats off, guys.

0:20:590:21:00

If you look on the left, it's the fake jacket here

0:21:020:21:04

and you see the bright colours showing how much heat

0:21:040:21:07

is coming through.

0:21:070:21:08

Whereas on the right-hand side, the real jacket,

0:21:080:21:10

you see much more darker blue colours.

0:21:100:21:13

So, in contrast of the two,

0:21:130:21:15

there's a lot less insulation in this jacket.

0:21:150:21:18

Professor Havenith's tests have proved

0:21:190:21:21

that when it comes to insulation,

0:21:210:21:23

the fake coat is vastly inferior to the genuine one.

0:21:230:21:27

The insulation of the real jacket is probably a third more

0:21:270:21:29

than the other one, so that's really a substantial difference.

0:21:290:21:32

And if you would go to the Arctic and depend on the jacket

0:21:320:21:35

and you would have bought the fake jacket,

0:21:350:21:37

I think you would be in trouble.

0:21:370:21:38

The existence of fakes is a major cause of concern for the company.

0:21:390:21:44

Most of the fakes are bought on what we call rogue websites.

0:21:440:21:48

So, these are counterfeiters that have taken our images,

0:21:480:21:51

taken our copy and created websites that look identical to ours.

0:21:510:21:56

So, it's very easy to get tricked.

0:21:560:21:59

But if you don't want to get caught out when buying online,

0:21:590:22:02

what can you do?

0:22:020:22:03

Some of the things to look out for are -

0:22:030:22:06

where's the phone number to customer service?

0:22:060:22:08

Where's the e-mail to customer service?

0:22:080:22:11

Sometimes you'll see on a fake site that the pricing is quite low.

0:22:110:22:16

Canada Goose jackets don't often go on sale.

0:22:160:22:19

So, it's rare that you would see that.

0:22:190:22:21

For Maya, it's a relief that she spotted the fake

0:22:230:22:25

before anything serious happened.

0:22:250:22:28

If I was wearing this coat on a day when it was raining,

0:22:280:22:31

when I'd been diving, I could have even got hypothermia

0:22:310:22:34

from the fact that this coat wouldn't keep me warm

0:22:340:22:36

and wouldn't keep me dry.

0:22:360:22:38

So, it's not just the case that I've lost the money,

0:22:380:22:40

it's the case that, actually, it could cause you harm.

0:22:400:22:43

These are big business. Hair extensions.

0:22:500:22:53

And they sell in hundreds of thousands.

0:22:530:22:55

Sections of hair that are attached to your own locks

0:22:550:22:58

to make them longer, thicker and more fashionable.

0:22:580:23:01

And the best are real human hair.

0:23:010:23:03

But, as with everything in the Fake Britain house,

0:23:030:23:06

these hair extensions are fake.

0:23:060:23:08

Use them and you might end up with something very different

0:23:080:23:11

to that glorious mane you were hoping for.

0:23:110:23:14

Having hair extensions can transform your look

0:23:160:23:19

and make you feel happier, healthier and more confident.

0:23:190:23:22

But if you accidentally buy fake hair extensions...

0:23:230:23:26

you may find the results are the exact opposite.

0:23:260:23:29

In the last five years, the UK hair extension industry has taken off.

0:23:330:23:37

Between 2009 and 2014,

0:23:370:23:40

the amount of human hair imported into this country more than doubled,

0:23:400:23:44

from £15 million to over £38 million worth.

0:23:440:23:49

So, what are we looking for today?

0:23:490:23:52

Bit of length, bit of volume.

0:23:520:23:53

Michelle Griffin has been in the hair extensions industry for 30 years

0:23:540:23:58

and now trains other extensionists from her award-winning salon

0:23:580:24:02

-in Birmingham.

-Does it feel comfortable?

-Yeah.

0:24:020:24:04

Today, she's doing a full set of hair extensions on client Emma.

0:24:040:24:08

People are wearing hair extensions

0:24:080:24:10

because the celebrities and the pop stars are wearing it.

0:24:100:24:13

So, it's coming from a very early age, a young age

0:24:130:24:16

where they're knowing more about extensions.

0:24:160:24:19

Hair extensions can come in individual strands

0:24:190:24:22

or larger sections and can be attached with clips, rings or glue.

0:24:220:24:28

Some extensions are made of synthetic fibres.

0:24:280:24:30

But for the most natural, long-lasting look,

0:24:300:24:32

the best option is to use 100% human hair.

0:24:320:24:36

It's very important that they have 100% human hair

0:24:360:24:40

purely because if you have synthetic hair put into your hair

0:24:400:24:43

and you don't realise and you're using a hot dryer

0:24:430:24:47

or any hot styling tool,

0:24:470:24:50

you will get a melt.

0:24:500:24:51

It will melt into your natural hair and it will cause major problems

0:24:510:24:54

in getting it out.

0:24:540:24:56

But with a full set of extensions from a top salon

0:24:560:24:58

costing up to 1,500 quid a go,

0:24:580:25:01

price-conscious customers are increasingly doing it themselves.

0:25:010:25:05

Hair extensions for home use can be bought from shops and markets

0:25:050:25:09

for as little as £25.

0:25:090:25:11

And it's one way to get the celebrity look without the hefty price tag.

0:25:110:25:15

But there are fake extensions out there

0:25:170:25:19

and using those could lead to a hair disaster.

0:25:190:25:23

As Chelsea Temperton from Hull discovered

0:25:230:25:25

when she decided to get extensions to enhance her own short cut.

0:25:250:25:28

Having shorter hair doesn't suit a lot of people and it didn't suit me.

0:25:290:25:34

So, having longer hair made me feel better about myself

0:25:340:25:38

and not conscious about the way I looked.

0:25:380:25:41

Being a trained hairdresser,

0:25:410:25:42

Chelsea knew how vital it is to have 100% human hair.

0:25:420:25:47

Well, I wanted 100% human hair because, obviously,

0:25:470:25:50

your straighteners, your curlers, they all heat up

0:25:500:25:52

to a high temperature.

0:25:520:25:54

So, you don't want...

0:25:540:25:55

..ones that are going to singe or anything like that.

0:25:560:25:59

Chelsea went down to her local beauty supplies shop

0:25:590:26:02

and purchased a set of 100% human hair extensions for £25.

0:26:020:26:07

When she got home, she started fitting the extensions

0:26:070:26:10

with help from her boyfriend.

0:26:100:26:12

I started to straighten them and I said,

0:26:120:26:15

"What's that smell?" And he went, "Oh, my God!"

0:26:150:26:18

And they kind of, like, sizzled up,

0:26:180:26:20

like, as if you'd put a flame to your own hair

0:26:200:26:24

and just stuck to the back of my head.

0:26:240:26:26

And he just had to instantly rip them out.

0:26:260:26:28

Which obviously pulled a lot of my hair out with it

0:26:280:26:32

and I had little bald patches all over the back of my head.

0:26:320:26:36

And, like, little bits that were shorter than the rest of my hair.

0:26:360:26:39

The extensions were fake.

0:26:390:26:41

They weren't 100% human hair at all, and the synthetic strands mixed in

0:26:410:26:45

had melted and fused with Chelsea's own hair.

0:26:450:26:48

By tugging and ripping, she managed to get them out,

0:26:490:26:52

but it left her scalp severely damaged.

0:26:520:26:55

It was really stinging because it had took bits of my skin away

0:26:550:26:57

where I'd ripped it...ripped it out.

0:26:570:27:00

A distraught Chelsea contacted her local Trading Standards,

0:27:000:27:04

who visited the shop where she'd bought the extensions.

0:27:040:27:07

Chris Wilson dealt with the case.

0:27:070:27:09

An inspection of the premises found 160 of these packaged

0:27:090:27:13

hair extensions, which we believed were all misleading.

0:27:130:27:16

Trading Standards seized the extensions

0:27:170:27:19

and sent samples off for testing.

0:27:190:27:21

The results revealed that far from being 100% human hair as advertised,

0:27:220:27:27

they were all more than 50% polyester,

0:27:270:27:30

with some nearly 70% synthetic.

0:27:300:27:33

This is one of the samples that were seized from the premises.

0:27:330:27:38

And as you can see, it clearly states 100% human hair.

0:27:380:27:42

And on the care instructions on the reverse, it states that,

0:27:430:27:47

"Straightening irons and curling tongs can be used on the hair."

0:27:470:27:50

But that is not the case.

0:27:510:27:53

We found that they contained polyester

0:27:530:27:55

and this would melt if you ever chose to actually

0:27:550:27:59

straighten the hair with them.

0:27:590:28:00

For Chelsea, it was important to know that her concerns

0:28:000:28:03

about the extensions had been justified.

0:28:030:28:05

It was like, "Yes. I knew I was right," kind of thing.

0:28:050:28:08

I knew that it wasn't something that I'd done

0:28:080:28:11

that made them melt.

0:28:110:28:13

The investigation revealed that the shop where Chelsea bought

0:28:130:28:16

the extensions had purchased them in good faith,

0:28:160:28:19

believing them to be real.

0:28:190:28:21

But the company who'd supplied the shop was taken to court.

0:28:210:28:25

The owner of Eve International Hair and Beauty

0:28:250:28:27

of Manchester pleaded guilty at Hull Magistrates Court

0:28:270:28:31

to trades descriptions offences

0:28:310:28:33

and had to pay £2,000 in fines and court costs.

0:28:330:28:37

Clearly, in this case, the manufacturers had mixed

0:28:370:28:40

human hair with synthetic fibres to really maximise their profits.

0:28:400:28:45

And they don't really care when they mislead consumers.

0:28:450:28:48

They're just after making money from the venture.

0:28:480:28:50

Despite her traumatic experience, Chelsea believes she got off lightly.

0:28:510:28:56

You've got to remember nowadays that younger people are using them,

0:28:560:29:00

like, 12-year-olds, 13-year-olds,

0:29:000:29:03

and it really could cause some serious damage to younger girls.

0:29:030:29:05

And it could get them in serious trouble with the skin and the hair.

0:29:060:29:11

Later, we'll see what happens when an extensions expert

0:29:110:29:14

goes in search of fake hair.

0:29:140:29:16

I can't run my fingers through it. It's actually rock hard.

0:29:160:29:19

All these letters were sent to large organisations,

0:29:250:29:28

like councils and hospitals,

0:29:280:29:30

informing them that the bank account details of one of their suppliers

0:29:300:29:33

had changed.

0:29:330:29:35

Fairly straightforward, you might think.

0:29:350:29:37

Thousands of letters like these turn up at organisations every year.

0:29:370:29:41

But all these letters are fakes, sent by criminals.

0:29:410:29:44

The new bank account has nothing to do with the legitimate suppliers.

0:29:440:29:49

That means councils, hospitals, big businesses, even charities,

0:29:490:29:53

can unwittingly pay huge sums directly to the fakers.

0:29:530:29:57

And an awful lot of that money... is ours.

0:29:570:30:00

Some large organisations can receive as many as 2,000 letters a year

0:30:020:30:06

from suppliers informing them of a change of bank details.

0:30:060:30:10

So, if a fake letter arrives,

0:30:100:30:12

you have to be pretty switched on to spot it.

0:30:120:30:15

Sharron Evans is finance administrator for the YMCA

0:30:160:30:20

in Cheltenham, which provides housing for homeless people.

0:30:200:30:24

When their existing building became too dated,

0:30:240:30:26

they knocked it down and built a brand-new one.

0:30:260:30:29

The percentage of homeless people was just rising

0:30:290:30:33

and they needed somewhere to go.

0:30:330:30:35

And we felt that, you know, we were in a position at that time

0:30:350:30:38

to be able to offer this.

0:30:380:30:40

After a consultation process,

0:30:420:30:44

the YMCA hired local construction company, Speller Metcalfe,

0:30:440:30:48

to build the new accommodation.

0:30:480:30:50

Andy Metcalfe is Chief Executive.

0:30:500:30:52

The value of the project to us as a construction

0:30:520:30:55

was approximately £3.6 million

0:30:550:30:58

and took about 18 months to complete.

0:30:580:31:02

As the project progressed, the YMCA made regular payments

0:31:040:31:07

to the builders for the work completed so far.

0:31:070:31:10

The next payment due was for £175,000.

0:31:100:31:15

But then Sharron received a letter.

0:31:150:31:17

The letter was from Speller Metcalfe

0:31:180:31:20

telling me that they'd changed their bank account

0:31:200:31:22

and that from this date forward,

0:31:220:31:25

to transfer any monies owed to them to this new bank account.

0:31:250:31:30

The letter had the correct logo and all the right details.

0:31:300:31:33

But something about it wasn't quite right.

0:31:330:31:36

I was suspicious because when I looked at the address,

0:31:360:31:39

there was a H missing.

0:31:390:31:41

Instead of Brockworth, it said "Brockwort".

0:31:410:31:44

I thought I needed to just check with them.

0:31:440:31:47

Sharron contacted the builders

0:31:470:31:49

to ask if they'd changed their bank details.

0:31:490:31:52

They then e-mailed me back and said, no, they hadn't.

0:31:530:31:55

The letter was a fake.

0:31:570:31:59

It wasn't from the builders at all.

0:31:590:32:01

If Sharron hadn't checked,

0:32:010:32:02

she would have paid £175,000 straight into a fraudster's bank account.

0:32:020:32:08

People have had to work and fundraise and everything

0:32:080:32:11

for that money.

0:32:110:32:12

For it just to disappear just like that, it would have been awful.

0:32:120:32:16

And for me to have to tell somebody that I'd lost £175,000...

0:32:160:32:22

Andy Metcalfe is concerned that someone was so easily able to fake

0:32:230:32:27

his company's identity and use it to try and steal money

0:32:270:32:30

from one of his clients.

0:32:300:32:32

It makes you intensely angry that somebody could come...

0:32:320:32:35

..and purport to be Speller Metcalfe.

0:32:360:32:39

That could look to come and take money away from hard-working people.

0:32:390:32:44

What Andy and Sharron experienced was a type of fakery

0:32:450:32:48

known as bank mandate fraud.

0:32:480:32:50

Will Richardson is a forensic accountant for auditors PwC.

0:32:500:32:55

It's something he sees regularly.

0:32:550:32:57

If we look at the last 12 months alone,

0:32:570:32:59

I've probably investigated about ten cases of mandate fraud.

0:32:590:33:02

The sums that have come across my desk of mandate fraud

0:33:020:33:05

are typically £500,000 plus.

0:33:050:33:08

Sometimes into the seven figures, into the millions as well.

0:33:080:33:11

And it's not just charities like the YMCA that are being targeted.

0:33:130:33:17

The fakers are after large payments from all sorts of organisations -

0:33:170:33:21

from private companies to schools, NHS trusts and local councils.

0:33:210:33:26

Like Conwy County Borough Council, in North Wales,

0:33:260:33:29

which recently embarked on a major redevelopment project at Colwyn Bay.

0:33:290:33:33

Mike Halstead is the council's head of audit.

0:33:350:33:39

In 2012, after a succession of storms,

0:33:390:33:42

the sea defence along this promenade was left severely damaged.

0:33:420:33:45

The project itself consisted of two major elements.

0:33:450:33:49

One was the sea defences and one was the building where we are now.

0:33:490:33:54

The whole scheme, when it's finished,

0:33:540:33:55

is expected to cost around about £25 million.

0:33:550:34:00

As the project progressed,

0:34:000:34:01

Conwy Council made regular payments to the building contractor.

0:34:010:34:05

The next sum due was £2.6 million.

0:34:050:34:09

Then, something unusual happened.

0:34:090:34:11

We were phoned by an individual who informed us that the

0:34:110:34:16

main contractor's bank details were changing.

0:34:160:34:20

This was slightly unusual, so we requested the submission of a letter

0:34:200:34:25

to confirm the new bank details.

0:34:250:34:27

But when the letter arrived, staff quickly spotted that it was a fake.

0:34:290:34:33

If the attempt had not been caught in time,

0:34:330:34:35

Conwy Council would have deposited a massive £2.6 million

0:34:350:34:40

of taxpayers' money into the faker's pockets.

0:34:400:34:43

The council would have had to recoup this money in some way,

0:34:430:34:46

which could have impacted on services.

0:34:460:34:48

For example, libraries could have been at risk.

0:34:480:34:52

Leisure centres could have been at risk.

0:34:520:34:54

Jobs could have been at risk.

0:34:540:34:55

And the attempt wasn't a one-off.

0:34:570:34:59

Conwy Council have received several fake bank change letters.

0:34:590:35:02

These letters are all purporting to be from different suppliers

0:35:020:35:06

to the council.

0:35:060:35:07

So, they are people we do do business with.

0:35:070:35:10

But they all have the same layout.

0:35:100:35:12

And interestingly, they all have the same signature,

0:35:130:35:16

which is an immediate warning for us that these are bogus.

0:35:160:35:20

Both the YMCA and Conwy Council were lucky.

0:35:210:35:25

Their eagle-eyed staff members managed to spot the fake letters

0:35:250:35:28

and avert disaster.

0:35:280:35:30

Other organisations haven't been so fortunate.

0:35:300:35:32

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS trust lost £24,000

0:35:340:35:37

after fraudsters sent a fake e-mail asking for a change of bank details.

0:35:370:35:41

The government of Guernsey paid out a massive £2.6 million to fakers

0:35:430:35:48

posing as the contractor working on the revamp of Guernsey Airport.

0:35:480:35:53

And another £2.6 million was lost over a 13-month period

0:35:530:35:58

by the owners of the Port of Felixstowe.

0:35:580:36:00

Again, paid out by mistake to criminals,

0:36:000:36:02

who faked the identity of the Port's fuel supplier.

0:36:020:36:05

And once the money's gone out, it's virtually impossible to get it back.

0:36:060:36:10

As soon as it hits a fraudster's bank account in the UK,

0:36:100:36:13

it's sent out of the UK.

0:36:130:36:15

It's quickly distributed across a number of different accounts

0:36:150:36:18

in different jurisdictions around the world,

0:36:180:36:20

which makes both the tracing of that money

0:36:200:36:22

and the recovery of that money almost impossible.

0:36:220:36:25

But in Felixstowe, they did manage to catch one of the fakers.

0:36:250:36:28

31-year-old Mohammed Fawzul-Rahman of Watford

0:36:290:36:33

was jailed for four years

0:36:330:36:34

after nearly half a million pounds of the Port's money

0:36:340:36:37

was laundered through his bank accounts.

0:36:370:36:40

The Port was able to recover about half the money stolen.

0:36:400:36:43

But around £1 million was never seen again.

0:36:430:36:46

Perhaps unsurprisingly, companies who have fallen victim to mandate fraud

0:36:470:36:51

rarely want to talk about it.

0:36:510:36:53

But it's a huge problem for businesses in the UK.

0:36:530:36:56

One of our large UK banks, it's corporate-client based,

0:36:560:36:59

experienced almost £40 million of attempted mandate fraud in 2014.

0:36:590:37:05

Of which it proactively managed to prevent almost 3/4 of that.

0:37:050:37:10

But what it's still suggesting to us

0:37:100:37:12

is that there is, in any given year,

0:37:120:37:15

hundreds of million pounds of attempted mandate fraud,

0:37:150:37:18

of which tens of million of pounds is getting through.

0:37:180:37:22

And to make it worse,

0:37:220:37:23

the faker's tactics are getting more sophisticated.

0:37:230:37:26

A fraudster will build up a rapport, just by contacting an organisation.

0:37:260:37:31

Introducing themselves as a new employee

0:37:310:37:33

at the supplier organisation,

0:37:330:37:34

develops a relationship, then makes a relatively light-touch request.

0:37:340:37:38

"Can I change a telephone number?"

0:37:380:37:39

So, when the actual request comes through to change bank details,

0:37:390:37:43

the contact details that the organisation has on file

0:37:430:37:46

is actually the fraudster's contact details.

0:37:460:37:48

Luckily, the attempts made on Conwy Council and the YMCA

0:37:490:37:53

were simple ones and by checking with the contractors,

0:37:530:37:55

they managed to avoid paying thousands of pounds

0:37:550:37:58

into a faker's bank account.

0:37:580:38:00

The worst-case scenario would be

0:38:000:38:03

that the building would not have been completed.

0:38:030:38:05

And that would have meant that all the people that we've helped so far

0:38:060:38:10

since opening, we would not have been able to help.

0:38:100:38:13

Earlier in the programme, we saw how Chelsea Temperton from Hull

0:38:200:38:24

accidentally bought fake hair extensions,

0:38:240:38:26

which then melted into her own locks.

0:38:260:38:29

They just stuck to the back of my head

0:38:290:38:30

and he just started to instantly rip them out,

0:38:300:38:33

which, obviously, pulled a lot of my hair out with it.

0:38:330:38:38

But how common are fake extensions?

0:38:380:38:41

Fake Britain went to find out.

0:38:410:38:43

Can you put your arms in there for me. Thank you.

0:38:430:38:46

Olletta Spring runs her own salon in Addingham, West Yorkshire.

0:38:460:38:50

She's been doing extensions for nearly five years

0:38:500:38:53

and has had several encounters with fake hair.

0:38:530:38:56

I had a girl come in with a clip-in set.

0:38:560:38:59

But when I was curling it with my wand, halfway through,

0:38:590:39:01

a section of the clip-in set actually melted to my wand.

0:39:010:39:05

And I had to quickly get it off

0:39:050:39:07

and try and detach it from her head

0:39:070:39:10

before it melted onto her own hair.

0:39:100:39:13

Hair extensions that can be clipped or glued in at home

0:39:140:39:17

are readily available in markets and high-street stores.

0:39:170:39:21

But as we've seen, some extensions that claim to be 100% human hair

0:39:210:39:25

can actually contain plastic-type fibres, like polyester or nylon.

0:39:250:39:30

And these fake extensions can cause real problems

0:39:300:39:33

for the unsuspecting consumer.

0:39:330:39:35

If plastic melts to your own hair,

0:39:350:39:37

there's little chance of getting it out your hair.

0:39:370:39:39

So, you may have to get that section removed and cut out by a hairdresser

0:39:390:39:43

or something, which is not a nice experience.

0:39:430:39:46

To find out how easy it is to buy fake extensions on the high street,

0:39:480:39:52

Olletta went shopping in Leeds.

0:39:520:39:54

After visiting three stores,

0:39:560:39:58

she finally found what she was looking for in the fourth.

0:39:580:40:01

Extensions described as 100% human hair, that she thinks might be fake.

0:40:010:40:06

Olletta took them back to the salon to test them.

0:40:070:40:09

So, this is the hair I bought in Leeds.

0:40:100:40:13

It's advertised as 100% human hair.

0:40:130:40:16

The reason why I think this is fake hair is because

0:40:160:40:19

it's a lot sleeker, a lot shinier.

0:40:190:40:21

It falls and feels differently.

0:40:210:40:23

It actually feels quite plastic in comparison to the human hair,

0:40:230:40:27

which just feels really nice and natural.

0:40:270:40:30

The best way to see whether the hair is real or fake

0:40:330:40:35

is to do what's known as a burn test.

0:40:350:40:38

By carefully lighting small sections of the hair,

0:40:380:40:41

Olletta can see how it burns and what residue it leaves behind.

0:40:410:40:45

OK, so, we're going to burn the human hair first

0:40:450:40:47

just so we know what to...what we should be expecting.

0:40:470:40:50

So, on human hair, the flame starts really quick

0:40:550:40:58

and it leaves an ash at the end that easily crumbles off.

0:40:580:41:01

But will the other pack of hair burn in the same way?

0:41:020:41:05

If it doesn't, it's fake.

0:41:050:41:07

So, as you can tell...with this one,

0:41:110:41:14

the burn at the bottom is... Well, it's actually melted plastic.

0:41:140:41:18

I can still mould it now it's hot.

0:41:180:41:20

It's... At the bottom, I can't run my fingers through it. It stops me.

0:41:200:41:24

It's actually rock-hard at the ends.

0:41:240:41:26

But how much fake hair is in the extensions?

0:41:280:41:31

To find out, we took them to fibres expert, Dr Phil Greaves,

0:41:310:41:34

at Microtex, in West Yorkshire.

0:41:340:41:36

By looking at samples under a powerful microscope,

0:41:380:41:41

he can quickly see what they're made of.

0:41:410:41:42

And those are polyester filaments - every one of them.

0:41:450:41:48

No human hair in here at all.

0:41:480:41:51

So, anybody who bought this thinking it was natural human hair...

0:41:510:41:55

..has been very strongly misled.

0:41:560:42:00

The extensions that claim to be 100% human hair

0:42:000:42:04

actually turned out to be 100% polyester instead.

0:42:040:42:07

I'm shocked that, you know, it's all polyester hair.

0:42:070:42:11

You know, from my experience and feeling it in the burn test,

0:42:110:42:14

I felt that it did have some synthetic hair in it,

0:42:140:42:17

some fake hair.

0:42:170:42:18

But I didn't realise that it would all be fake.

0:42:180:42:20

Fake Britain contacted the shop where Olletta bought the extensions

0:42:210:42:24

and they told us they had no knowledge of the fakes.

0:42:240:42:27

The brands Leopard and Top Girl Hair couldn't be found.

0:42:270:42:31

After her hair nightmare,

0:42:340:42:36

Chelsea has vowed never to risk using home extensions again.

0:42:360:42:39

I feel angered at the experience of what happened to me.

0:42:390:42:44

And I wouldn't want it to happen to anybody else.

0:42:440:42:46

It's dangerous and they shouldn't be used.

0:42:460:42:48

They shouldn't even be on the market.

0:42:480:42:51

That's all from Fake Britain.

0:42:560:42:57

Goodbye.
