household accidents across the UK and three million others end up in | :00:13. | :00:17.
A The scale of some of the potentially fatal hazards in our | :00:18. | :00:20.
homes is shocking. And the actions of the dodgy and deceitful few who | :00:21. | :00:26.
put lives in dangerer is scandalous. Every one of us is at risk, so take | :00:27. | :00:31.
a look around and ask yourself... How safe is your house? You might | :00:32. | :00:38.
not know it, but dangers exist in all our homes. In this series we | :00:39. | :00:42.
reveal where you're most at risk and how to stay safe. With the help of | :00:43. | :00:52.
Mark Miller, we will hunt down the dangerous tradesmen whose hazardous | :00:53. | :00:56.
work leaves households all over the UK in lethal condition. This is | :00:57. | :01:01.
beyond a joke. Water and electrics don't mix. I have never seen | :01:02. | :01:05.
anything quite as bad as this. Go, go, go. I'm Angellica bell. I'll be | :01:06. | :01:14.
with all the agencies in the UK on the frontline of the battle to keep | :01:15. | :01:22.
our homes safe 24/7. If you buy from an unregulated website, you could be | :01:23. | :01:27.
buying from a drug dealer. We reveal the deadly dangers that lurk in your | :01:28. | :01:33.
home. I items that I found have the potential to end life. | :01:34. | :01:42.
Tonight, we tackle one of the landlords whose actions put the | :01:43. | :01:48.
health of families all over the UK at serious risk. They come down with | :01:49. | :01:53.
blue lips, in the morning, it was heart breaking. Makes me feel like | :01:54. | :01:57.
I'm failing, as a We come mum. Face to face with the invisible killer | :01:58. | :02:02.
that exists in all our homes. They could turn into a death You just | :02:03. | :02:10.
trap. Don't realise the danger. But first, we've come to the outskirts | :02:11. | :02:15.
of Leeds in West Yorkshire to meet a couple whose builder left them with | :02:16. | :02:19.
a lethal home and a bill of thousands of pounds to make it safe | :02:20. | :02:24.
again. Matt, Mark, nice to meet you. Come | :02:25. | :02:29.
on in. Matt and his wife live in this detached house with their son | :02:30. | :02:33.
Lucas and like millions of us wanted to extend and improve their family | :02:34. | :02:37.
home. What did you want your builder to do? We wanted him to convert the | :02:38. | :02:44.
loft into another bedroom, replacing the boiler and fitting the kitchen. | :02:45. | :02:46.
loft into another bedroom, replacing the boiler and fitting Did you have | :02:47. | :02:49.
any previous -- did you have previous experience of this builder? | :02:50. | :02:54.
We had used him br. He laid the wooden floor in a house and | :02:55. | :02:59.
converted the garage into a At what playroom. Point time-wise did you | :03:00. | :03:03.
give up hope that he would be helping you and at what state was | :03:04. | :03:07.
the loft in? It was four-and-a-half months after he started. The floor | :03:08. | :03:11.
was in, the stairs were in and the steel beams were in, but it was a | :03:12. | :03:15.
mess. By the time their builder walked off the job, Matt and Carley | :03:16. | :03:22.
had handed over almost the entire ?14,850 the job was budgeted to | :03:23. | :03:26.
cost. It was everything they had in the bank, but things were about to | :03:27. | :03:33.
get much worse. Had you got any idea of just how dangerous your home had | :03:34. | :03:40.
become? No. What did do you? We got another builder in. He walked up the | :03:41. | :03:45.
stairs into the loft, did that thing that tradesmen do, when they whistle | :03:46. | :03:49.
through their teeth and told us that he wasn't sure that the loft itself | :03:50. | :03:54.
was safe as it had been left. One of the main issues was that the loft | :03:55. | :04:00.
floor was dangerously unsafe. During their sight visit, building control | :04:01. | :04:04.
made this clear to the builder and as Mark is finding out, the second | :04:05. | :04:08.
builder, brought in to fix the problems, also believed it posed a | :04:09. | :04:14.
severe risk to the family. This is very nice. It is now. What were the | :04:15. | :04:23.
problems and darchingers on this build? The floor was not | :04:24. | :04:28.
structurally sound. It was that bad. What had happened, he had lid new | :04:29. | :04:31.
timbers over the existing ceiling and boarded it. That's dangerous. | :04:32. | :04:35.
That's about as dangerous as it gets. There was a steel beam here, | :04:36. | :04:39.
when common knowledge amongst builders, the beam should have been | :04:40. | :04:45.
down at floor level here. This steel is doing nothing and the weight of | :04:46. | :04:47.
the rafters is being transferred into the floorment It's a ceiling, | :04:48. | :04:52.
the original ceiling of the house. He's pushed the weight of the house | :04:53. | :04:58.
onto the original ceiling. Get a load of snow on there and boom, it's | :04:59. | :05:02.
gone. Lucas sleeps under here. This could have come Yeah it down? Could, | :05:03. | :05:08.
That's pretty yeah. Dangerous. The hazardous work that Matt and | :05:09. | :05:11.
Carley's original builder carried out in the loft is appalling, but | :05:12. | :05:14.
it's not the only serious danger this family were exposed to. Matt | :05:15. | :05:20.
and Carl yay sure me that their builder claims that he vets all the | :05:21. | :05:23.
people that work for him. I've got a gas report here and I can assure | :05:24. | :05:27.
you, the guy who fitted the gas in this house has not been vetted, | :05:28. | :05:30.
because he is not registered with gas safe. That's pretty serious | :05:31. | :05:35.
stuff. Gas safe registration is an industry standard, but it's also an | :05:36. | :05:38.
indication of competence. That's correct. In this report, basically, | :05:39. | :05:42.
I have eight defects on the work that's been done in the house. They | :05:43. | :05:46.
are two of them are a risk to life and the property. We're talking | :05:47. | :05:51.
about a young couple, with a very young child, and they | :05:52. | :05:52.
about a young couple, with a very young child, and were at risk as a | :05:53. | :05:56.
result of the trader that this builder brought in? They were | :05:57. | :06:00.
seriously at risk. Matt, Carley and Lucas were exposed to the threat of | :06:01. | :06:04.
carbon monoxide poisoning, but it wasn't just their health at stake. | :06:05. | :06:07.
They also had to pay a heavy financial price. What has it cost | :06:08. | :06:13.
you to put right the job that the original builder did? Another | :06:14. | :06:20.
?17,000 on top of what we gave the first builder. We spent just over | :06:21. | :06:26.
?32,000 in total. This is your dream to create a beautiful house, bring | :06:27. | :06:30.
your child up in a nice place. Suddenly, somebody can come into | :06:31. | :06:34.
your life and ruin it with bad workmanship. It just makes us feel | :06:35. | :06:39.
so disgusting that we let this person into our house and just ruin | :06:40. | :06:44.
it and make it unsafe. What course of action have you taken against | :06:45. | :06:47.
him? We've taken out a County Court judgment against him. We're looking | :06:48. | :06:54.
into the possibility of bailiffs, as well. Matt and Carley's dream of an | :06:55. | :06:58.
improved and extended family home was left in tatters by their | :06:59. | :07:05.
builder. We're going to confront him to try and get some answers about | :07:06. | :07:09.
why he left their house in such a dangerous state and make sure he | :07:10. | :07:13.
doesn't do the same thing to anyone else. Across the UK, there are | :07:14. | :07:23.
approximately 30 million people living in rented accommodation. | :07:24. | :07:27.
Whilst the majority of homes are safe, many are living in dangerously | :07:28. | :07:32.
substandard conditions. It's the job of housing officers to deal with the | :07:33. | :07:38.
growing problem of rogue landlords renting out hazardous homes. In | :07:39. | :07:44.
Peterborough I meet a couple living in a seriously unsafe house. | :07:45. | :07:50.
Hello. You must be Martin. I'm Peter from the Council. Martin and Sam | :07:51. | :08:00.
live in this two-bed semi with their two young daughters. And there are a | :08:01. | :08:04.
number of problems in the house that their landlord is doing nothing | :08:05. | :08:10.
about. The main things are the radiators. None of them really work | :08:11. | :08:14.
properly. Occasion ally maybe. The gas fire is the only thing that | :08:15. | :08:18.
works properly. We have the boiler that leaks. Damp in the bedroom. | :08:19. | :08:22.
Debris is coming through the ceiling. Peter needs to carry out a | :08:23. | :08:28.
survey of their home. There are 29 categories of potential housing | :08:29. | :08:31.
hazards to assess. Three quarter of a million of us live with serious | :08:32. | :08:36.
category one issues, like inadequate heating, lack of fire alarms and | :08:37. | :08:40.
poor security, which pose a severe threat to our health or safety Tell | :08:41. | :08:46.
me how you came to rent this property. We were in a hostel. We | :08:47. | :08:50.
were evicted from our previous house. The landlord wanted to sell | :08:51. | :08:55.
it. All we had was the room. We had to have all our stuff in that room. | :08:56. | :09:00.
There were three single beds and a travel cot. When the first house | :09:01. | :09:05.
came up, we just leapt on it. Didn't we? Yes. We wanted a nice home for | :09:06. | :09:12.
the Even thop girls. It was in such bad condition. When we first moved | :09:13. | :09:17.
in it was coming into summer. You couldn't feel the cold. The damp we | :09:18. | :09:21.
could see, the landlord told us it had been dealt with. How do you live | :09:22. | :09:25.
in a cold house? It's really hard. The girls have had numerous colds | :09:26. | :09:31.
and you have to put vests and tights, pajamas on top of that, plus | :09:32. | :09:34.
a onesie. If we don't do that, they come down with blue lips in the | :09:35. | :09:37.
morning. It's heart breaking. It really is. How does that make you | :09:38. | :09:43.
feel? Like I'm failing, I think, a bit, a as a mum. -- as a mum. As | :09:44. | :09:49.
part of a mum and dad's role, you're meant to protect your child. During | :09:50. | :09:53.
winter, it's best to keep the temperature in your house above 18 | :09:54. | :09:57.
Celsius, as cold can cause life-threatening health problems, | :09:58. | :10:00.
such as pneumonia and even heart attacks. The lack of heating in the | :10:01. | :10:05.
couple's house is putting the health of the whole family at risk. Martin | :10:06. | :10:09.
and Sam are desperate to hear if Peter is going to do anything about | :10:10. | :10:18.
the conditions in their home. The house is sadly lacking adequate | :10:19. | :10:22.
heating. Our next course of action will be to take what we call | :10:23. | :10:26.
statutory action against your landlord. We set a start date and | :10:27. | :10:29.
finish date by which the landlord has to comply with that legal | :10:30. | :10:35.
notice. This is a landlord that Peter has had problems with in the | :10:36. | :10:38.
past. And because the lack of heating in the family's home is such | :10:39. | :10:43.
a serious issue, Peter's given him just seven days to fix it. If he | :10:44. | :10:47.
doesn't comply, I'll be putting recommendations forward to prosecute | :10:48. | :10:51.
him. We owe it to the good landlords in the city of Peterborough to take | :10:52. | :10:56.
that sort of action. We've got a zero tolerance on it. It's just not | :10:57. | :11:01.
acceptable to have a landlord just thinking he can get away with doing | :11:02. | :11:06.
repairs. It is their duty to keep their properties in good repair. We | :11:07. | :11:12.
shouldn't have to do that. They should know that and do it. One week | :11:13. | :11:19.
later, the deadline for the land p Lord to carry -- landlord to carry | :11:20. | :11:22.
out the work is approaching. We have children in the house that are more | :11:23. | :11:26.
likely to suffer ill health, if we don't have heating in at this time | :11:27. | :11:29.
of year, we know what the consequences could be. It's crunch | :11:30. | :11:35.
time. I'll be back with Peter soon, as he continues to crack down on one | :11:36. | :11:39.
of the rogue landlords that threaten the health and safety of so many of | :11:40. | :11:42.
us and tries to make Martin and Sam's home safe to live in. | :11:43. | :11:53.
Last year, 70 people were killed in the UK by faulty household | :11:54. | :11:57.
electrics, and hundreds of thousands more were injured. Experts recommend | :11:58. | :12:01.
getting our electrics checked every time we move home or every five | :12:02. | :12:07.
years. But how many of us actually do it? Good question. I don't know | :12:08. | :12:12.
the last time I had my electrics checked. A couple of years ago, I | :12:13. | :12:16.
think. I don't think I have had it checked actually! We had the house | :12:17. | :12:22.
rewired when we moved into it. But that's probably, you know, two or | :12:23. | :12:26.
three decades ago. For most of us, getting our electrics checked isn't | :12:27. | :12:33.
top of the to-do list. But as a mother and grandmother, Jane knows | :12:34. | :12:37.
dodgy electrics can have devastating consequences. First, I was a very | :12:38. | :12:44.
sociable person. Loved being with people, loved parties. Fred was | :12:45. | :12:54.
away. Faulty wiring in an appliance nearby had earthed itself through | :12:55. | :13:03.
the pipes, I think, and into the bath. There was no earth to make it | :13:04. | :13:10.
safe. So when she got in the bath and touched the taps, she would have | :13:11. | :13:17.
had apparently a huge electric shock and I'm told, was killed | :13:18. | :13:26.
immediately. In the morning, Milly couldn't hear mummy. She went to | :13:27. | :13:30.
look for mummy and found her. She said she realised that mummy was | :13:31. | :13:35.
dead. She was only five. There was an earth wire, but because it hadn't | :13:36. | :13:39.
been checked, it runs outside and then a spike into the ground, it had | :13:40. | :13:44.
corroded. So it was on sometimes and not at others. If it had been | :13:45. | :13:48.
earthed, then she wouldn't have died. This is just heart breaking, | :13:49. | :13:58.
but it has to be said because other - you know, you wouldn't want | :13:59. | :14:02.
anybody else to lose somebody so precious. The story is heart | :14:03. | :14:13.
breaking and highlights that getting your electrics checked needs to be a | :14:14. | :14:19.
priority. One family who haven't are quality control technician Richard | :14:20. | :14:24.
and his wife, Sonia, who live with their two-year-old daughter Isobel, | :14:25. | :14:28.
just outside When we Hull. Bought the house we assumed that the | :14:29. | :14:31.
electrics would be all right, that it was outside -- outof sight, out | :14:32. | :14:36.
of mind. We had a problem with the electrics, when we tried to plug the | :14:37. | :14:40.
Hoover in, when I pushed the plug it, in sparks. If you plug something | :14:41. | :14:44.
in here when there's stuff on in the dining room, it will blow a fuse in | :14:45. | :14:49.
the circuit board. I don't know how dangerous the electrics are in this | :14:50. | :14:52.
house. I don't feel it's dangerous to the point of death, or anything | :14:53. | :14:58.
daft, but I do feel that it does need addressing. Most of us share | :14:59. | :15:04.
Richard and Sonia's out of sight, out of mind attitude to the | :15:05. | :15:07.
electrics in our homes and like them, have no idea whether they are | :15:08. | :15:13.
dangerous or not. To find out more about how safe their house is, we | :15:14. | :15:19.
arrange for electrical -- an electrical inspector to have a look. | :15:20. | :15:23.
I have a metal switch here. There's no earth in this lighting circuit, | :15:24. | :15:28.
that's a big concern. As well as the unearthed light circuit connected to | :15:29. | :15:31.
metal light fittings, unearthed light circuit connected to | :15:32. | :15:34.
metal light other discoveries included dangerous sockets, dodgy | :15:35. | :15:37.
wiring, Anderson exposed junction box. His overall verdict was scary. | :15:38. | :15:44.
The items that I found have the potential to end life. It doesn't | :15:45. | :15:48.
take much at all to kill you. Ape order and Sonia are living in a | :15:49. | :15:52.
death -- Richard and Sonia are living in a death trap. These | :15:53. | :15:55.
problems exist in homes across the UK. Many of us just don't know it. | :15:56. | :16:01.
Darren has reported his findings to them and to demonstrate the | :16:02. | :16:04.
potentially fatal power of electricity, we're all living with, | :16:05. | :16:08.
we've brought them to a specially-rigged studio in Bristol. | :16:09. | :16:16.
Welcome. Nice to meet you both. How are you feeling about what you have | :16:17. | :16:22.
heard? It is a worry. We live with these things every day. It is more | :16:23. | :16:28.
than a worry. Open, live circuits. Unearthed light switches and you | :16:29. | :16:33.
touch them as well. They look fancy. But they could be an absolute death | :16:34. | :16:37.
trap. You just don't realise the danger. It is always good to seek | :16:38. | :16:44.
advice from professionals. To highlight the risks that faulty | :16:45. | :16:48.
electrics opposed to all of us when making the invisible visible, I am | :16:49. | :16:54.
asking Sonia to touch a deadly electrical fault. The special | :16:55. | :16:57.
chainmail suit will keep her safe because it is a better conductor of | :16:58. | :17:02.
electricity than we are, so electricity will flow through it | :17:03. | :17:05.
rather than through her, but she will still experience it's | :17:06. | :17:09.
frightening power. How are you feeling? | :17:10. | :17:31.
The electrical balk shows the deadly force that is lurking behind our | :17:32. | :17:39.
walls. Because we can't see it, most of us don't worry about it until it | :17:40. | :17:40.
is too late. What did it actually feel like? It | :17:41. | :18:15.
was terrifying. When it first went on and it came to me, you know... | :18:16. | :18:21.
The whole purpose of this was to underline to you two just how | :18:22. | :18:24.
dangerous electricity can be in the home. As it's changed your | :18:25. | :18:33.
perspective? -- has it changed? Until you do something like this, | :18:34. | :18:38.
you don't know how intense it really is. Having experienced its killer | :18:39. | :18:42.
power and heard Darren's verdict about the dangers in her home, | :18:43. | :18:45.
Richard and Sonia have called in experts. We were naive to think it | :18:46. | :18:55.
is safe. It makes you realise how important it is to get little things | :18:56. | :19:00.
done. It looks like we got to the couple just in time. When somebody | :19:01. | :19:04.
put the floorboard down, they have nailed through the live conductor | :19:05. | :19:08.
and a nail was live when we lifted the floor. Yes, it could have killed | :19:09. | :19:12.
somebody because there was no RCD protection. The RCD is a switch | :19:13. | :19:19.
designed to trip when electricity flows out of the house through | :19:20. | :19:23.
anything other than the earth wire. Put simply, it is a life-saver. I | :19:24. | :19:28.
feel like we have moved into a new house, even though it is the same | :19:29. | :19:42.
house. I feel a lot saved. -- safer. In Peterborough, the rogue | :19:43. | :19:48.
landlord that Peter is dealing with has failed to sort out the freezing | :19:49. | :19:54.
conditions in Martin and Sam's home. The landlord has had his seven days | :19:55. | :19:58.
to fix the heating and he has not complied with the legal requirement | :19:59. | :20:03.
of the notice. So what I shall be doing is to recommend prosecution | :20:04. | :20:06.
proceedings on the basis that he has not complied with a legal notice. | :20:07. | :20:12.
Across the UK, 1 million of us say our help has been affected by | :20:13. | :20:15.
landlords not carrying out repairs in our homes, -- health. Peter and | :20:16. | :20:23.
his colleagues are cracking down on them and taking action to make sure | :20:24. | :20:29.
the places we live in our safe. How are you? We are back with a special | :20:30. | :20:36.
delivery. The landlord is facing a fine of ?2500 for ignoring the | :20:37. | :20:39.
notice served on him and he will still have to sort out a permanent | :20:40. | :20:44.
heating solution and paid for the temporary heaters. It is a result | :20:45. | :20:49.
for Martin and Sam but Peter's survey of their home turned up more | :20:50. | :20:54.
problems that need to be dealt with. What have you found in the kitchen? | :20:55. | :20:59.
Anything specific that stands out? The kitchen door has seen better | :21:00. | :21:06.
days. It is not very good or secure. This is the only means of securing | :21:07. | :21:11.
the door. The original locking system is no longer there. It is | :21:12. | :21:16.
almost free access. Upstairs there are other problems. This ceiling is | :21:17. | :21:24.
breaking down. It has been breaking down over a long period of time and | :21:25. | :21:28.
it gets progressively worse and the ceiling cannot hold any longer and | :21:29. | :21:33.
it is breaking down. Look at the pillow. If you were sleeping, that | :21:34. | :21:38.
would be in your face. How serious is that? It is breaking down in its | :21:39. | :21:44.
integrity. Like Sam and Martin, millions of people rent their homes | :21:45. | :21:47.
and have problems with damp and leaking windows but there are a | :21:48. | :21:51.
dozen other issues that the landlord has to fixed to make the house fit | :21:52. | :21:57.
and save to live in. It is not a lot to ask a landlord to repair a house | :21:58. | :22:01.
that he should have repaired in the first place. It is only making | :22:02. | :22:06.
somewhere suitable to live in and that is his obligation in the first | :22:07. | :22:10.
place. We are not asking for the world. The landlord has been | :22:11. | :22:14.
dragging his heels about fixing the other issues in this home, but | :22:15. | :22:18.
several weeks after being issued with two more legal notices to fix | :22:19. | :22:22.
them, he finally seems to be taking the problem seriously. We are having | :22:23. | :22:27.
a meeting with the landlord and Peter here. Basically just to | :22:28. | :22:34.
discuss what needs to be done and why it has not been done and when it | :22:35. | :22:40.
is going to be done. How are you feeling about it? Quite happy. Since | :22:41. | :22:44.
I have been here, the landlord has never been in this house. I don't | :22:45. | :22:48.
know if he was before we moved in but I don't think he has ever seen | :22:49. | :22:53.
the state of the house. If he is coming in today, I can show him | :22:54. | :22:58.
round, show him the problems, so he actually knows what we are living | :22:59. | :23:04.
in. So far the landlord has shown very little intention of fixing the | :23:05. | :23:08.
issues in Martin and Sam's home and a meeting could start to move things | :23:09. | :23:14.
forward. Later in the day, Peter has bad news. The landlord said he will | :23:15. | :23:18.
not be coming. He did not explain any more than that, he just said he | :23:19. | :23:25.
would not come and that was it. I am really disappointed. Shall I meet | :23:26. | :23:30.
you at the house? Fine. This is another blow for Martin and Sam. | :23:31. | :23:35.
They just want a safe family home for themselves and their girls. They | :23:36. | :23:39.
have put themselves out and he has not bothered to show up. Martin had | :23:40. | :23:44.
to cancel a job this morning that he was supposed to do because the | :23:45. | :23:48.
landlord was coming. How long has the landlord got before this | :23:49. | :23:53.
situation gets more serious? It is already serious. We are at the | :23:54. | :23:57.
formal notice stage, taking statutory action. It is already | :23:58. | :24:03.
serious. He has seven weeks now to get the work completed. Do you think | :24:04. | :24:08.
it will be sorted? I don't think so, not on time. Seven weeks later, | :24:09. | :24:13.
Martin was right. The landlord solved very few problems. The | :24:14. | :24:18.
council moved in and fixed the back door to make their home safe and | :24:19. | :24:22.
secure as well as the damp in the bedroom and the other issues needed | :24:23. | :24:26.
to bring the home up to a liveable standard and the landlord is being | :24:27. | :24:30.
prosecuted. He will have to foot the bill of ?10,000 for the work they | :24:31. | :24:36.
carried out. As well as facing fines of ?7,500. | :24:37. | :24:48.
In Leeds, we are on the trail of a builder who walked away from a job | :24:49. | :24:55.
leaving Matt and Kali with a seriously hazardous home, and a bill | :24:56. | :25:00.
of thousands of pounds to sort out the dangerous mess that he left | :25:01. | :25:06.
behind. Just coming up to 6:30am and the good news is that we think we | :25:07. | :25:10.
have managed to track down this builder. Obviously we have several | :25:11. | :25:13.
questions to ask him. Let's get going. The builder left their home | :25:14. | :25:21.
in a terrible condition with a dangerous loft floor, illegal and | :25:22. | :25:26.
lethal gasworks, and a county court judgement against them for over | :25:27. | :25:31.
?17,000. We are going to confront him and make sure he thinks twice | :25:32. | :25:35.
about leaving anyone else's home in such an dangerous condition. We are | :25:36. | :25:41.
heading towards his house now and we have had surveillance on the job | :25:42. | :25:47.
before today. On that occasion he left home at 8:30am. We just have to | :25:48. | :25:53.
stay came out until he comes out. Hopefully I will get some answers. | :25:54. | :26:01.
-- stake him out. This guy lives 100 metres down the street. We are | :26:02. | :26:06.
clocking the house the whole time, watching out for a twitch of the | :26:07. | :26:10.
curtains, which we have just had. When he emerges from the front door, | :26:11. | :26:15.
we will judge a 2p and hopefully get answers to these questions. -- judge | :26:16. | :26:26.
a point to pounce. It is time to get some answers and find out why this | :26:27. | :26:29.
builder turned this home into a hazardous building site. It is | :26:30. | :26:36.
8:30am, bang on the moment he left for work last time. These could be | :26:37. | :26:42.
workmates. Two blokes. Yes, they are going with him. We are just waiting. | :26:43. | :26:52.
Go, go, go. Good morning, boys. Mark Clemmit, | :26:53. | :27:06.
BBC television. I want to ask you a few questions if I can about some | :27:07. | :27:12.
work that you have done. Can you tell us why you left their home in | :27:13. | :27:19.
such a dangerous state, please? You didn't? You didn't? Why the county | :27:20. | :27:27.
court judgement against you? You need to answer these questions. | :27:28. | :27:31.
After we caught him on the way to work, the builder got in touch and | :27:32. | :27:36.
told us that extra uncontracted jobs meant that he had to leave the | :27:37. | :27:40.
project but he would not tell us what they were. He also claimed his | :27:41. | :27:44.
work on the loft floor was signed off by building control and the | :27:45. | :27:48.
lethal gasworks was nothing to do with him, as he asked the engineer | :27:49. | :27:54.
for his safety ID number. We spoke to building control who revealed | :27:55. | :28:08.
that they had not signed off the loft floor, and despite his claims | :28:09. | :28:10.
that all the trades men he uses are vetted, one quick phone call | :28:11. | :28:12.
revealed that the engineer who worked on this house was not gas | :28:13. | :28:15.
safe registered. The builder is also facing serious consequences because | :28:16. | :28:20.
a High Court officer has been brought in to enforce the county | :28:21. | :28:24.
court judgement. The builder is contesting this but they have heard | :28:25. | :28:27.
nothing from him and if he does not pay up, he could be made bankrupt. | :28:28. | :29:05.
Hello, I'm Ellie Crisell with your 90 second update. | :29:06. | :29:08.
A train carrying bodies of Malaysian plane victims has begun moving out | :29:09. | :29:11.
of rebel-held Ukraine. Earlier pro-Russian forces allowed | :29:12. | :29:13.
Dutch forensic experts on board. Here a memorial service has been | :29:14. | :29:16.
held for two Newcastle supporters. The drugs trial of | :29:17. | :29:20.
Tulisa Contostavlos has collapsed. The judge said there were | :29:21. | :29:21. |
