There's a lot we don't know about the food on our plates.

0:00:020:00:05

And the shops and the labels don't always tell you the whole story.

0:00:050:00:10

I think they encourage you to buy more than you need.

0:00:100:00:13

And that causes a lot of waste.

0:00:130:00:14

Whether you're staying in, or going out,

0:00:140:00:17

you've told us you can feel ripped off by the promises made

0:00:170:00:21

for what you eat and what you pay for it.

0:00:210:00:23

How do you know that it's half price? Right.

0:00:230:00:26

So what they've done, they've bumped the price up

0:00:260:00:28

and they've knocked it down.

0:00:280:00:30

From claims that don't stack up, to the secrets behind the packaging,

0:00:300:00:35

we'll uncover the truth about Britain's food

0:00:350:00:38

so you can be sure you're getting what you expect, at the right price.

0:00:380:00:42

Your food. Your money.

0:00:420:00:45

This is Rip-Off Britain.

0:00:450:00:46

Hello and welcome to Rip-Off Britain,

0:00:500:00:53

where this series we're investigating some of the questions

0:00:530:00:56

and problems that you've sent us to do with food.

0:00:560:00:58

Which, of course, is an area where not everything

0:00:580:01:00

is always quite as it seems.

0:01:000:01:02

And, of course, there is absolutely no shortage of controversies

0:01:020:01:05

and arguments about what we should or should not be having.

0:01:050:01:09

And, let's face it, every day seems to bring with it

0:01:090:01:12

a new scare story or a scientific study.

0:01:120:01:15

Sometimes totally contradicting what has been said in the past.

0:01:150:01:18

You know, we can end up spending as much time talking about our food

0:01:180:01:22

as actually eating it.

0:01:220:01:24

And it can be really frustrating trying to make sense

0:01:240:01:26

of all the information that's out there,

0:01:260:01:28

which, of course, is where we come in.

0:01:280:01:30

Indeed it is because today we'll be finding out more

0:01:300:01:32

about some of the food, drinks and ingredients

0:01:320:01:35

that have made the headlines or caused controversy.

0:01:350:01:37

So get ready for some surprises as we find the truth.

0:01:370:01:41

It isn't always what you expected.

0:01:410:01:43

Coming up, the energy drinks that pack a powerful punch.

0:01:440:01:48

Why the experts, schools and parents all worry

0:01:480:01:51

about just how many of them kids are knocking back.

0:01:510:01:53

I really don't think you should be drinking them.

0:01:530:01:55

You know, do you know how much caffeine there is in this?

0:01:550:01:58

It really can't be good for you.

0:01:580:02:01

And the toxic chemicals routinely used to grow our fruit and veg.

0:02:010:02:05

We'll test just how many are still there by the time we buy them.

0:02:050:02:08

I go around the supermarket and I see the vegetables

0:02:080:02:12

and the fruit and I wonder what's been put on that

0:02:120:02:15

to make it look so perfect. And I do feel nervous about it.

0:02:150:02:17

Now, let's talk energy drinks.

0:02:210:02:23

They boast exotic-sounding ingredients like guarana,

0:02:230:02:26

or taurine. They promise to make you more alert,

0:02:260:02:30

to increase concentration and, of course, to boost your energy.

0:02:300:02:33

And that's mainly because they're made with caffeine,

0:02:330:02:36

lots of caffeine.

0:02:360:02:37

Which probably isn't a problem for most adults

0:02:370:02:40

but could be for kids, some of whom are drinking a lot more

0:02:400:02:44

of these powerful drinks than anyone would say is safe.

0:02:440:02:48

If you buy into their high-adrenaline ad campaigns,

0:02:500:02:53

energy drinks are designed to give that extra boost

0:02:530:02:55

to anyone who's into extreme sports,

0:02:550:02:58

loud music and a fast-paced lifestyle.

0:02:580:03:01

In short, they're marketed as pretty cool,

0:03:010:03:04

which is one reason why these drinks have become such a hit

0:03:040:03:06

with another group too.

0:03:060:03:08

15-year-old Corin Skinner, from Galloway,

0:03:120:03:14

is especially keen on this one - Monster.

0:03:140:03:18

Much to the frustration of mum Susan.

0:03:180:03:21

So, Corin, what do you find so attractive about this stuff?

0:03:210:03:24

It's like a cool kid thing to drink.

0:03:240:03:26

-Is it?

-Yeah.

-And are most of your friends using this stuff as well?

0:03:260:03:30

Nobody really thinks it's bad though,

0:03:300:03:31

you don't think about that, you're just thinking about,

0:03:310:03:34

"Oh, I've got my five cans of energy drink."

0:03:340:03:36

People like to brag about it, like, "Oh, I've got..."

0:03:360:03:39

-So you drink five cans in one evening?

-No, not me.

0:03:390:03:42

Corin started drinking energy drinks when he was 12.

0:03:430:03:46

And, like many of his friends, soon started having several cans a week.

0:03:460:03:50

There was this one time when I was in town, when I had about four

0:03:500:03:55

and...I just kind of felt sick afterwards.

0:03:550:03:58

Along with thousands of other teenagers with spending money

0:04:000:04:03

burning a hole in their pocket, Corin bought his energy drinks

0:04:030:04:07

when out with his friends.

0:04:070:04:08

So Susan initially had little idea that he was drinking them.

0:04:080:04:12

I started to worry a bit when I found underneath the bed,

0:04:140:04:17

along with all the usual sweet wrappers,

0:04:170:04:20

one or two of these cans of high-energy drinks.

0:04:200:04:22

I had some concerns about him being able to get these

0:04:220:04:26

and drink them without my control.

0:04:260:04:28

When you stay up to two o'clock in the morning,

0:04:280:04:31

-playing your games, you want to do this stuff and drink it?

-Yeah.

0:04:310:04:34

I really don't think you should be drinking them.

0:04:340:04:36

You know, do you know how much caffeine there is in this?

0:04:360:04:38

It really can't be good for you.

0:04:380:04:41

Corin's can of choice, Monster, is the third bestselling brand

0:04:410:04:45

of energy drink in the UK.

0:04:450:04:46

Like three others in the top five,

0:04:460:04:49

Red Bull, Relentless and Rockstar,

0:04:490:04:51

every 100ml of Monster contains 32mg of caffeine.

0:04:510:04:55

The same as just under half a shot of espresso.

0:04:580:05:01

Market leader Red Bull has in the past been criticised

0:05:010:05:05

for its caffeine levels.

0:05:050:05:07

But the cans of relatively new kids on the block,

0:05:070:05:09

Monster, Rockstar and Relentless,

0:05:090:05:12

are twice as big as a typical-sized Red Bull.

0:05:120:05:16

Which means each 500ml can of these three drinks

0:05:160:05:20

packs in the same amount of caffeine as two shots of espresso.

0:05:200:05:24

There's no official recommendation for how much caffeine

0:05:240:05:27

is safe to consume every day, but it's generally agreed that adults

0:05:270:05:30

shouldn't have more than 400mg,

0:05:300:05:33

that's about ten cans of cola,

0:05:330:05:35

or around two and a half cans of these energy drinks.

0:05:350:05:39

But for children,

0:05:400:05:41

it's around 150mg per day,

0:05:410:05:44

less than one can of these

0:05:440:05:46

monster-sized energy drinks.

0:05:460:05:48

And, from what we've heard, an awful lot of kids don't stop at one.

0:05:480:05:52

Too much caffeine can lead to palpitations,

0:05:520:05:55

heart problems and headaches.

0:05:550:05:57

But combined with the sugar in the drinks,

0:05:570:06:00

it has also another effect,

0:06:000:06:02

one that some people might think is positive.

0:06:020:06:04

Yeah, I like energy drinks because of the buzz that you get

0:06:040:06:07

but after a while, it starts to wear down.

0:06:070:06:09

I used to consume about two to three a day

0:06:090:06:12

and then I had to give them up.

0:06:120:06:14

This school in Haydock, on Merseyside,

0:06:160:06:18

banned all energy drinks in 2014

0:06:180:06:21

after both staff and students raised concerns about the effects that

0:06:210:06:25

it was feared they could be having on some of the pupils' behaviour.

0:06:250:06:29

The children actually came to me and said,

0:06:290:06:31

"We think that we ought to do something about this."

0:06:310:06:34

I gave the children a one-week amnesty,

0:06:340:06:37

where we warned them, took the drinks away

0:06:370:06:40

and gave them back at the end of the day.

0:06:400:06:41

And now, sadly, they get poured down the sink.

0:06:410:06:44

Here today, I have no doubt that there'll be one or two children

0:06:440:06:48

who have possibly secreted the odd can or bottle

0:06:480:06:51

in their pocket, at the bottom of their bag or whatever.

0:06:510:06:54

But now they know that this will be enforced.

0:06:540:06:57

And though she can't prove it's entirely down to the ban,

0:06:570:07:00

Dee is convinced that a year after pouring away all those confiscated

0:07:000:07:04

energy drinks, it has had a dramatic effect right across the school.

0:07:040:07:08

Detentions over a 12-month period

0:07:080:07:10

fell by over 40% from the beginning of the year,

0:07:100:07:14

before the ban, till the end of the year

0:07:140:07:17

after it had established itself.

0:07:170:07:18

Concentration is better, the school is calmer,

0:07:180:07:21

children move between lessons in a calm way.

0:07:210:07:23

Not that they were bad to start with but every little helps.

0:07:230:07:28

The views of the pupils themselves are a little mixed.

0:07:280:07:32

I think it was quite a good thing to do to ban them

0:07:320:07:34

but...I don't think they should, like, take them off them

0:07:340:07:37

and pour it down the drain.

0:07:370:07:39

They should wait till after school to give it you.

0:07:390:07:41

And it's not just pupils at the school who are under prohibition.

0:07:410:07:46

Oh, you can't drink that here!

0:07:460:07:48

Oh, sorry... Sorry, I didn't realise.

0:07:480:07:50

I'll have that.

0:07:500:07:53

In December 2014, the Food Standards Agency introduced rules

0:07:530:07:57

forcing manufacturers of drinks with a caffeine content

0:07:570:08:00

of over 150mg per litre to make that clear on the can.

0:08:000:08:05

Along with a warning explicitly stating that they are not suitable

0:08:050:08:09

for children, or for pregnant or breast-feeding women.

0:08:090:08:13

And it's their advertising campaigns that have led to concerns

0:08:130:08:16

from some that these drinks are being particularly targeted

0:08:160:08:20

at young people.

0:08:200:08:21

Children are attracted by the names

0:08:210:08:23

that come out from some of these energy drinks.

0:08:230:08:27

Monster? Is that something that appeals to 20, 30-year-olds?

0:08:270:08:31

Or does it appeal to somebody who's 13, 14, 12?

0:08:310:08:35

Er, they're very keen when they see that.

0:08:350:08:38

Branding expert Gary Davies also believes that the popularity

0:08:390:08:43

of some of these drinks with young people is not accidental.

0:08:430:08:47

If you look at the websites of some of these companies,

0:08:470:08:50

one in particular, the Monster brand,

0:08:500:08:53

have an associated website that refers to The Monster Army.

0:08:530:08:59

And this is a bit of promotion by the company,

0:08:590:09:01

which is targeting, in their words,

0:09:010:09:04

"Athletes from the age of 13 to 21."

0:09:040:09:08

And they're encouraging young athletes to apply, basically,

0:09:080:09:11

for sponsorship. That means that you are deliberately targeting

0:09:110:09:14

13-year-olds with your product.

0:09:140:09:17

And, personally, I think that's totally unacceptable.

0:09:170:09:20

But Monster isn't alone in linking its brand to activities

0:09:200:09:23

that are popular with teenagers.

0:09:230:09:26

Rockstar, sold by British company Barr,

0:09:260:09:28

supports professional alternative sports including BMX,

0:09:280:09:32

skating and wakeboarding.

0:09:320:09:34

And while Relentless, which is made by Coca-Cola,

0:09:340:09:37

and Red Bull both have campaigns that are linked to either

0:09:370:09:40

gaming, music or extreme sports, Gary is in no doubt

0:09:400:09:43

that these too are likely to appeal to a younger market.

0:09:430:09:47

But for him, it's American-brand Monster that sets itself apart.

0:09:470:09:52

Because while there are certainly no laws stopping

0:09:520:09:54

its Monster Army promotion actively engaging with 13-year-olds,

0:09:540:09:59

Gary thinks the drink's high caffeine levels

0:09:590:10:02

makes that inappropriate.

0:10:020:10:04

Where a company deliberately targets, in this case, 13-year-olds,

0:10:040:10:09

then I think it's something that we have to put our hands up and say,

0:10:090:10:12

"Well, that's wrong, that should be stopped."

0:10:120:10:16

But Monster Energy rejects such criticisms,

0:10:160:10:20

stressing that it...

0:10:200:10:21

And, indeed, from its launch in 2002,

0:10:230:10:26

explicitly stated on the can that the drink is not recommended

0:10:260:10:29

for them, the first energy drink to do so.

0:10:290:10:33

It says the product is mainly consumed by young males

0:10:330:10:36

aged 18 to 34, so the brand initiatives and image

0:10:360:10:39

are aimed at them.

0:10:390:10:40

However, it says there's no problem for children

0:10:400:10:43

who choose to consume the drink. And while its Monster Army promotion...

0:10:430:10:48

..without its support, talented athletes would not have been able

0:10:500:10:54

to develop their potential, or turn professional.

0:10:540:10:58

It added that...

0:10:580:10:59

The makers of those other high-caffeine drinks,

0:11:050:11:08

Relentless and Rockstar, stressed that they follow

0:11:080:11:11

an industry code of practice, which states that they should not market

0:11:110:11:15

or advertise to under-16s.

0:11:150:11:18

They told us that their products...

0:11:180:11:20

Red Bull chose to let the industry body,

0:11:240:11:27

the British Soft Drinks Association, speak on its behalf.

0:11:270:11:31

The Association, which sets the relevant codes of practice,

0:11:310:11:34

told us that...

0:11:340:11:36

Even so, some people have called for a total ban

0:11:440:11:47

on children buying these kinds of energy drinks.

0:11:470:11:50

Because, as it stands, there's no limit on who can buy them

0:11:500:11:53

or how many they can buy.

0:11:530:11:56

Later in the programme, we'll see how much of a problem that really is

0:11:560:11:59

and hear why the government's school dinners advisor

0:11:590:12:02

believes that an age limit on selling these drinks

0:12:020:12:05

would be a very good idea.

0:12:050:12:06

Now, when you shop for your fruit and veg,

0:12:110:12:13

how much thought do you ever put into what pesticides

0:12:130:12:16

might have been used on them?

0:12:160:12:17

And whether there could be any traces still lurking

0:12:170:12:20

under the shiny skin of your apples or indeed, inside your lovely leeks.

0:12:200:12:24

Well, British farmers have used pesticides for decades

0:12:240:12:27

but there are those who remain very sceptical about using them at all.

0:12:270:12:31

And would even question whether they're safe.

0:12:310:12:33

So to find out if there is anything to worry about

0:12:330:12:36

or whether pesticides really are the key to keeping prices low

0:12:360:12:39

and the quality high, we've done a test.

0:12:390:12:42

And I must tell you, the results are quite surprising.

0:12:420:12:45

As the supermarket wars continue apace, one of the key battlegrounds

0:12:490:12:53

remains the fresh fruit and veg aisle.

0:12:530:12:57

Here, products from all over the world jostle for position

0:12:570:13:00

and most shoppers will be looking for the freshest, the juiciest

0:13:000:13:03

and most attractive specimens they can spy on the shelves.

0:13:030:13:07

Take the humble apple, for example.

0:13:080:13:10

How many times have we taken a minute or two, or maybe even longer,

0:13:100:13:14

searching amongst all the apples to make sure they don't have any

0:13:140:13:16

blemishes or bruises, hoping that they'll stay fresh

0:13:160:13:19

that little bit longer in the fruit bowl at home?

0:13:190:13:22

I know I certainly have!

0:13:220:13:23

In order to get those perfect-looking specimens,

0:13:250:13:27

many commercial orchards spray their apples up to 18 times a year

0:13:270:13:32

with over 30 different active substances.

0:13:320:13:35

From fungicides and insecticides to herbicides and growth regulators.

0:13:350:13:39

And that's what concerns Janet White from Kent.

0:13:390:13:42

Worried about the chemicals that had been used on the produce

0:13:420:13:45

in her weekly shop, Janet took matters into her own hands

0:13:450:13:48

and now, instead of buying all her fruit and veg,

0:13:480:13:51

she grows most of it, without pesticides, on this very allotment.

0:13:510:13:55

I grow these because they're easy to grow.

0:13:550:13:57

I don't really have to worry about any of the nasties,

0:13:570:14:00

-I don't need to put pesticides on them.

-And they don't attract slugs?

0:14:000:14:03

-There we go.

-And are you scared of pesticides?

0:14:030:14:06

I'm not really 100% comfortable with them.

0:14:060:14:09

I think there's so many things on food that we buy

0:14:090:14:12

that we have no control over.

0:14:120:14:14

I go round the supermarket and I see the vegetables and the fruit

0:14:140:14:18

and I wonder what's been put on that to make it look so perfect.

0:14:180:14:22

-And I do feel nervous about it...

-Is that a really big worry for you?

0:14:220:14:25

It's a worry, they import so much from abroad

0:14:250:14:27

and I have absolutely even less of an idea of what might be put on...

0:14:270:14:31

on fruit or veg that's imported.

0:14:310:14:34

So I just feel...I'd rather know what I was eating, where I can.

0:14:340:14:38

Pesticides protect plants from pests such as bugs and weeds,

0:14:400:14:44

so that more of a farm's crop flourishes and can be sold.

0:14:440:14:47

Pesticides might kill the bugs and weeds

0:14:470:14:49

but their use is so strictly regulated in Europe

0:14:490:14:52

that they shouldn't cause any harm to humans

0:14:520:14:55

because all that should be left on any fruit or veg

0:14:550:14:58

are minute traces or residues.

0:14:580:15:00

But even a small residue is enough to worry some people.

0:15:000:15:04

Campaigners Pesticide Action Network UK

0:15:040:15:07

have linked pesticide residues on foods to health risks

0:15:070:15:11

ranging from a hormonal imbalance to cancer.

0:15:110:15:14

And they're very worried that the number of foods sold

0:15:140:15:16

with residues present is increasing.

0:15:160:15:19

Using government figures, they found that 46%

0:15:190:15:22

of fresh vegetables and fruit, such as grapes and apples,

0:15:220:15:25

contained residues very much up from 25% in 2003.

0:15:250:15:30

So we thought that we'd do a little experiment of our own

0:15:300:15:33

and go to a nearby laboratory.

0:15:330:15:35

What we'd thought we'd do is to take some of the produce

0:15:350:15:37

that Janet has grown really naturally,

0:15:370:15:40

alongside the equivalent from a supermarket

0:15:400:15:43

and we'll test it all for pesticide residue.

0:15:430:15:46

Well, Janet, I see you've been busy digging out. Marvellous.

0:15:460:15:50

So, what have you got?

0:15:500:15:51

Right, we've got some leeks, a lovely baby squash,

0:15:510:15:55

some raspberries, some potatoes, a lovely beetroot,

0:15:550:15:59

-parsnip and a cabbage.

-You did well.

-We did very well.

0:15:590:16:03

Well, I'm looking forward to taking this lot now to the laboratory

0:16:030:16:05

-and I bet you'll be interested in the results.

-I can't wait.

0:16:050:16:08

-Thanks, Janet, you've been terrific.

-Thank you, Gloria.

-Thank you.

0:16:080:16:11

And it's here, not too far away from Janet's allotment,

0:16:120:16:15

that we sent our samples.

0:16:150:16:17

Kent Scientific is one of six local authority labs in England

0:16:170:16:21

which help police food safety.

0:16:210:16:23

The team tests around 4,000 food samples a year

0:16:230:16:26

for all kinds of safety concerns including pesticide residues.

0:16:260:16:31

The importance really is because pesticides are contaminants

0:16:310:16:34

and we just need to control and ensure that the levels in there

0:16:340:16:37

aren't going to cause any problems if you eat the food.

0:16:370:16:40

What do pesticides do to your body?

0:16:400:16:41

They can do a range of things cos they've got a range

0:16:410:16:44

of chemical structures, but in the worst case, they're cancer causing.

0:16:440:16:48

So, that's what we need to ensure we control.

0:16:480:16:51

So is it OK to have a certain level of pesticides?

0:16:510:16:54

Yes, I mean, as long as that pesticide is below

0:16:540:16:57

its maximum allowed level, then it's fine.

0:16:570:16:59

It's there not as a safety level but it's there as a trigger level

0:16:590:17:04

and anything above that, there'd be concerns.

0:17:040:17:06

Jon not only tests food for sale in our shops

0:17:070:17:10

but also produce arriving from abroad at UK ports.

0:17:100:17:14

And because these imports aren't subject

0:17:140:17:16

to the same tight regulations

0:17:160:17:17

as food grown in Europe, it's more likely that they could be

0:17:170:17:20

breaking the rules on pesticide residue levels.

0:17:200:17:24

Do you often find that a lot of the stuff you test

0:17:240:17:27

-breaks that legal requirement?

-Yeah, I mean, we do fail products.

0:17:270:17:31

A number of products that we've come across lately

0:17:310:17:34

have been rejected just because of high levels of pesticides present.

0:17:340:17:37

We've been looking at products coming in from Africa

0:17:370:17:40

and these have been dried products, things like dry beans.

0:17:400:17:43

They had a particular residue in there, which was cancer causing

0:17:430:17:46

and it was well above its maximum residue level.

0:17:460:17:48

-Oh, that's scary, isn't it?

-You're talking about hundreds of times

0:17:480:17:51

-above its maximum residue level.

-Hundreds above?

0:17:510:17:53

Hundreds of times above its maximum residue level.

0:17:530:17:56

And they were rejected outright.

0:17:560:17:57

They won't even come into the food chain.

0:17:570:18:00

But what about our own test?

0:18:020:18:04

Pitting Janet's allotment samples against their supermarket cousins,

0:18:040:18:07

to see what traces of pesticides Jon can find.

0:18:070:18:12

From Janet's haul he tested her raspberries,

0:18:120:18:15

cabbage,

0:18:150:18:16

squash and potatoes.

0:18:160:18:19

And for each of those, we matched them up with equivalent produce

0:18:200:18:23

bought from the supermarket nearest to Janet's allotment.

0:18:230:18:26

Obviously, Janet was very keen to find out Jon's results in person.

0:18:260:18:31

You'll be pleased to know that the four samples from your allotment

0:18:310:18:33

-did not contain one single pesticide residue.

-Thank goodness.

0:18:330:18:37

-So, I can claim to be organic.

-You can certainly,

0:18:370:18:39

-in terms of the pesticide analysis.

-Oh, I'm really pleased.

0:18:390:18:42

Really, really pleased.

0:18:420:18:44

That result is what Janet expected.

0:18:440:18:47

But what about the supermarket produce?

0:18:470:18:48

The stuff she avoids cos she's worried about how many

0:18:480:18:51

pesticide traces might still be on it.

0:18:510:18:54

None of the produce we tested was organic,

0:18:540:18:57

so pesticides will have been used when they were grown.

0:18:570:19:00

But did any trace of those pesticides remain?

0:19:000:19:03

Of the four supermarket samples, only one of them actually contains

0:19:030:19:06

-a single residue...

-Really?

-..which is quite pleasing

0:19:060:19:09

in the sense of supermarket foods as well.

0:19:090:19:12

The sample that contained the residue was the raspberries

0:19:120:19:15

and, in fact, the residue that we found was below

0:19:150:19:17

its maximum residue level. In fact, it was only a tenth

0:19:170:19:20

-of its maximum residue level. So...

-And that's acceptable?

0:19:200:19:23

-That's more than acceptable.

-Now, you see that proves a certain point,

0:19:230:19:26

doesn't it? Because, if you're saying that three out of the four

0:19:260:19:30

actually were free of pesticide from the supermarket,

0:19:300:19:33

it does beg the question, is it worth all this effort

0:19:330:19:36

in an allotment and growing organic, if in essence

0:19:360:19:39

you can pick it up at the supermarket?

0:19:390:19:41

I think the difference is that if you grow them yourself,

0:19:410:19:43

-you know what you're putting in there.

-Yeah.

0:19:430:19:45

-And you should have a lot more confidence.

-I do.

0:19:450:19:47

And the flavour is always so much better and you get so much pleasure

0:19:470:19:50

-out of the hard work that you've done as well.

-It's true.

0:19:500:19:52

Are you surprised though about the results of the supermarket ones?

0:19:520:19:55

I am cos I suppose we have this kind of fear that, you know,

0:19:550:19:59

-supermarket, bad...

-Yeah, yeah.

0:19:590:20:01

-..home-grown, good.

-That's right.

-And now I feel quite comfortable...

-Yeah.

0:20:010:20:04

..buying in the supermarket.

0:20:040:20:06

And, clearly, there's no reason why she shouldn't.

0:20:060:20:09

The government body that sets the limits on pesticide use

0:20:090:20:12

is confident that there's nothing to worry about.

0:20:120:20:14

Stressing that the residue levels found in most fruit and veg

0:20:140:20:18

approved to be sold in the EU

0:20:180:20:19

are too small to be any threat to human health.

0:20:190:20:23

Having tested a range of products certainly from within

0:20:230:20:25

the European Union, we tend to find not that many problems.

0:20:250:20:29

So if you do encounter one,

0:20:290:20:30

the chances are, the level is not particularly high.

0:20:300:20:33

So I... it hasn't swayed me from moving,

0:20:330:20:35

certainly from routine non-organic produce to organic, no.

0:20:350:20:40

Some people would find that quite surprising.

0:20:400:20:42

Well, I mean, perhaps so but I think if you do wash before you eat them,

0:20:420:20:46

I think, essentially, you're reducing that risk.

0:20:460:20:49

So having spent some time in the lab,

0:20:500:20:52

I would have to say that it's very reassuring

0:20:520:20:55

to know that professionals like Jon are constantly testing,

0:20:550:20:58

to keep the levels of pesticide below the legal limit.

0:20:580:21:01

But what have I learnt personally from my day-to-day life?

0:21:010:21:04

Well, on one level I've learnt not to be too strung up

0:21:040:21:07

about organic versus non-organic because, as indeed Jon said,

0:21:070:21:12

thorough washing of fruit and veg actually takes care

0:21:120:21:14

of most pesticides.

0:21:140:21:16

I'll tell you something, in the future, I will be very diligent

0:21:160:21:19

about how I prepare my food at home,

0:21:190:21:21

and for once, this apple has been very well washed.

0:21:210:21:26

Mmm.

0:21:260:21:27

Still to come on Rip-Off Britain.

0:21:300:21:32

If sugar really is as bad for us as some people say,

0:21:320:21:35

then which of the alternatives are any better?

0:21:350:21:38

With a lot of these, sort of, natural sugar alternatives,

0:21:380:21:41

there's an awful lot of bold health claims out there,

0:21:410:21:44

which people are prepared to pay a lot of money for.

0:21:440:21:47

And it makes me really angry, in a way, to see that.

0:21:470:21:50

You know, these days, sugar has become something of a dirty word.

0:21:540:21:58

In the space of just a few years, sugar's star has fallen

0:21:580:22:01

and a host of alternatives have been rushed on to the market.

0:22:010:22:05

The makers of these low-calorie sweeteners are desperate

0:22:050:22:07

to convince us that, thanks to them,

0:22:070:22:09

we can all have our cake and eat it.

0:22:090:22:13

But are these sugar substitutes all that they seem?

0:22:130:22:16

Well, to find out, we've put five of the most popular

0:22:160:22:19

to our own bake-off test.

0:22:190:22:21

It's been a crucial part of our diet and our cooking for donkey's years.

0:22:220:22:26

But recently sugar has become so controversial

0:22:260:22:29

you'd be forgiven for thinking it was public enemy number one.

0:22:290:22:33

We're always being told we consume too much

0:22:330:22:36

and some scientists say it's a direct cause of the obesity crisis.

0:22:360:22:40

But if you want to cut down on sugar without missing out

0:22:400:22:43

on that lovely sweet taste, what can you use instead?

0:22:430:22:47

Some of the alternatives to sugar have themselves

0:22:470:22:49

been just as controversial.

0:22:490:22:51

So if, like Nicola Tott from Stockport,

0:22:510:22:54

you're looking for a balanced diet that's not heavy on sugar

0:22:540:22:57

or artificial sweeteners, the choices are limited.

0:22:570:23:00

And while she's keen to keep her family healthy,

0:23:000:23:02

they've all got very clear ideas about what they want to eat.

0:23:020:23:06

We try and buy fresh food where possible

0:23:060:23:09

but generally it's not that easy, especially if you're busy

0:23:090:23:12

and the kids generally don't want to wait for me to cook a long meal.

0:23:120:23:17

They'll only eat things that are generally bright in colour

0:23:170:23:21

and that are tasty, like sugary things.

0:23:210:23:24

Nicola's keen to limit how much sugar is in her children's diet

0:23:250:23:29

but doesn't really know what to replace it with.

0:23:290:23:33

I don't know much about alternatives but I'd definitely be interested

0:23:330:23:36

to find out more about it. If there was something out there that was

0:23:360:23:39

sweet but really healthy and natural, then I think every parent

0:23:390:23:42

would be really interested in it.

0:23:420:23:45

Alternatives to sugar are widely available in every supermarket,

0:23:450:23:50

some of them are natural, some of them are not.

0:23:500:23:52

Either way, if the makers are to be believed,

0:23:520:23:54

then their products are just what Nicola is looking for.

0:23:540:23:58

You two, tea's ready.

0:23:580:24:00

But can they really do the same job as sugar?

0:24:000:24:03

Not just in terms of taste but in the cooking, too?

0:24:030:24:07

To find out, we asked professional cake maker Trudi Combey

0:24:070:24:10

to put five of the most widely available sugar alternatives

0:24:100:24:13

to the test, with a little help from Nicola.

0:24:130:24:16

And we'll see how each of them performs

0:24:160:24:18

when they're used instead of sugar in a simple recipe.

0:24:180:24:22

We're just going to use a basic shortbread.

0:24:220:24:24

That's cos there's hardly any ingredients in it

0:24:240:24:27

and you need a little bit of sweetness

0:24:270:24:29

and there won't be much to mask that sweetness.

0:24:290:24:32

And it should give us a good taste test to see whether it...

0:24:320:24:35

actually, they do taste differently.

0:24:350:24:38

Four of Trudi and Nicola's shortbreads will be made

0:24:380:24:40

with products now being touted as natural alternatives to sugar.

0:24:400:24:44

And one with an artificial sweetener that's been around for decades

0:24:440:24:48

and itself has had its fair share of controversy - aspartame.

0:24:480:24:52

You could just grease that and that if you want with those.

0:24:520:24:55

Among our natural sweeteners is one with the backing

0:24:550:24:57

of the biggest soft drinks company in the world.

0:24:570:25:00

Up to 300 times as sweet as sugar,

0:25:000:25:02

stevia has already joined the mainstream

0:25:020:25:05

after being used in Coca-Cola's newest variety,

0:25:050:25:08

reducing the calories in one can from 139 to 89.

0:25:080:25:12

It's very grainy.

0:25:120:25:14

We're also testing xylitol, a natural sweetener

0:25:160:25:19

that occurs in fruit and vegetables.

0:25:190:25:22

It's not quite the new kid on the block,

0:25:220:25:24

having been used in chewing gum for years.

0:25:240:25:27

-Which cutter do you want to use for the...

-Er, the stars.

0:25:270:25:31

-The star?

-Yeah.

-And our third natural sweetener is agave nectar,

0:25:310:25:35

widely touted as a healthy sweetener

0:25:350:25:38

and championed by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow.

0:25:380:25:42

-Oh, a nice sloppy mess, that one. Can you see that one?

-Yeah.

0:25:420:25:45

But the best known of the products we're testing

0:25:450:25:48

is the one that's probably already in our cupboard - honey.

0:25:480:25:51

Lots of us have been using it as an alternative to sugar for years.

0:25:510:25:55

And now one of Britain's most famous cereals has swapped

0:25:550:25:58

at least some of its sugar for honey too.

0:25:580:26:01

-BOTH:

-Sugar Puffs, Sugar Puffs, up, honey-coated puffs in a milky bath.

0:26:010:26:05

In 2014, the manufacturers of Sugar Puffs announced

0:26:050:26:09

that they were going to reduce the sugar content

0:26:090:26:11

and replace some of it with honey and change the name too.

0:26:110:26:15

Manufacturers Halo Foods told us

0:26:150:26:17

they've been cutting the cereal's sugar content for years

0:26:170:26:21

and it now has a third less than it did 10 years ago,

0:26:210:26:24

which they say makes it significantly healthier.

0:26:240:26:26

It isn't the only breakfast cereal that makes a big deal

0:26:260:26:29

about getting at least some of its sweetness from honey.

0:26:290:26:33

But is honey, or indeed any of our natural alternatives,

0:26:340:26:37

a healthier option than sugar?

0:26:370:26:39

Well, Trudi and Nicola are testing them all out in their shortbreads.

0:26:390:26:42

We asked Tanya Haffner, from the British Dietetic Association,

0:26:420:26:46

whether these substitutes are really the key to replacing sugar for good.

0:26:460:26:50

With a lot of these sort of natural sugar alternatives,

0:26:500:26:53

there's an awful lot of bold health claims out there on the market,

0:26:530:26:56

which people are prepared to pay a lot of money for.

0:26:560:26:59

And it makes me really sort of angry in a way to see that.

0:26:590:27:03

We've seen a lot of manufacturers recently

0:27:030:27:07

starting to use honey, for example, instead of sugar

0:27:070:27:11

in some of the products and this really ties in with the fact that

0:27:110:27:15

consumers are really looking for something that is more natural

0:27:150:27:19

but we've got to be really careful with this term cos natural

0:27:190:27:21

does not always mean that it's good for you

0:27:210:27:24

and honey is a prime example of that.

0:27:240:27:26

It's got the same chemical structure as table sugar,

0:27:260:27:30

so it's treated by the body in exactly the same way.

0:27:300:27:33

So no difference in terms of its effect on your health.

0:27:330:27:36

And if honey isn't the altogether healthier sweetener

0:27:380:27:40

some people might have hoped, Tanya says the celebrity favourite

0:27:400:27:44

agave nectar may not be a better choice than sugar either.

0:27:440:27:47

Sorry, Gwyneth!

0:27:470:27:49

In the agave you've got a higher fructose content

0:27:490:27:52

and that has been reported to be more beneficial

0:27:520:27:56

for your blood sugar levels but in actual fact,

0:27:560:27:59

we have no evidence for that.

0:27:590:28:01

So, in my mind, as dieticians, we would say it's no different

0:28:010:28:05

from table sugar, in terms of your health.

0:28:050:28:08

Tanya is slightly more positive about xylitol,

0:28:080:28:11

which, despite its chemical sounding name, is natural.

0:28:110:28:15

This is xylitol, it's an extract from a plant,

0:28:150:28:18

it's not calorie free, it's got 30% less calories than table sugar,

0:28:180:28:23

so slightly better.

0:28:230:28:24

It's also slightly more slowly absorbed into the bloodstream,

0:28:240:28:27

which is a good thing.

0:28:270:28:29

But what does our dietician make of stevia,

0:28:310:28:33

which sounds too good to be true?

0:28:330:28:35

It has virtually zero calories and is completely natural.

0:28:350:28:38

It's 200 to 300 times sweeter than table sugar,

0:28:400:28:42

so we only need to use a very small amount.

0:28:420:28:45

It can be used in cooking, so it's stable, for example,

0:28:450:28:48

in baking and cooking, which some of the other

0:28:480:28:51

low-calorie sweeteners are not.

0:28:510:28:53

But some people have found stevia leaves a bitter aftertaste,

0:28:540:28:58

which is why manufacturers like Coca-Cola choose to blend it

0:28:580:29:01

with a lower level of sugar.

0:29:010:29:03

Meaning although stevia itself is calorie free,

0:29:030:29:06

the products it's in may not be.

0:29:060:29:08

So, it seems all these natural alternatives

0:29:090:29:12

have their pros and cons.

0:29:120:29:14

We'll be looking more closely at the artificial sweetener

0:29:140:29:17

used in our baking test - aspartame, later in the programme.

0:29:170:29:20

But the only real way to find the sugar substitute that's right for you

0:29:200:29:24

is to taste it. So back in Stockport, Trudi and Nicola are ready

0:29:240:29:28

to take their shortbreads out of the oven and do just that.

0:29:280:29:31

Oh! They smell good.

0:29:310:29:33

As far as they're concerned, neither the xylitol or the agave nectar

0:29:330:29:37

make good shortbread.

0:29:370:29:39

That was horrid and that was horrid.

0:29:390:29:41

The shortbread with the artifical sweetener - aspartame,

0:29:410:29:44

doesn't do so well either.

0:29:440:29:46

That was very sweet.

0:29:460:29:48

And the shortbread made with the honey...

0:29:480:29:51

That one's just horrid and doughy.

0:29:510:29:54

Which means that by far the most successful sugar-free shortbread

0:29:540:29:58

was the one made with stevia.

0:29:580:29:59

I think the stevia was my favourite.

0:29:590:30:02

In baking, in baking terms,

0:30:020:30:05

it resembled the sugar the most.

0:30:050:30:07

It's a pleasant taste.

0:30:070:30:09

It's not quite...the same taste as the sugar,

0:30:090:30:14

but it isn't an unpleasant one.

0:30:140:30:16

I would say the stevia was my favourite as well.

0:30:160:30:20

It tasted quite sweet,

0:30:200:30:22

not as sweet as the sugar, but still sweet enough.

0:30:220:30:25

Now, of course, our experiment was highly subjective.

0:30:270:30:30

And used in other ways,

0:30:300:30:31

or with a bit more practice and tweaking of the recipe,

0:30:310:30:34

all these sugar alternatives could do a useful job.

0:30:340:30:37

And Nicola's already thinking of other ways she could use them.

0:30:370:30:40

We do have, like, Greek yogurt with a honey.

0:30:410:30:44

So perhaps a Greek yogurt with fruit and the stevia could work.

0:30:440:30:48

They'd probably eat that.

0:30:480:30:50

And, possibly, I would consider using stevia in a cup of tea.

0:30:500:30:55

It's unlikely any of these alternatives

0:30:570:30:59

could ever replace sugar entirely

0:30:590:31:02

and, indeed, Sugar Nutrition UK,

0:31:020:31:04

the group that represents the sugar industry,

0:31:040:31:06

would say they don't need to.

0:31:060:31:07

It told us that table sugar is just as natural

0:31:070:31:10

as the alternatives we tested,

0:31:100:31:12

adding that all of these are comprised of glucose,

0:31:120:31:15

fructose or sucrose,

0:31:150:31:17

and "the body does not differentiate

0:31:170:31:19

"between any of these different types of sugar."

0:31:190:31:22

It went on to stress that...

0:31:220:31:23

What's more, it says government figures show

0:31:300:31:33

that over the last decade...

0:31:330:31:34

But if you are worried about your sugar consumption,

0:31:480:31:51

rather than cut it out completely,

0:31:510:31:53

the advice from the British Dietetic Association

0:31:530:31:56

is to gradually reduce the amount you take in.

0:31:560:32:00

I've done it within my family.

0:32:000:32:01

You start to reduce it really gradually

0:32:010:32:03

and your taste buds get used to that.

0:32:030:32:05

But don't use some of the natural alternatives,

0:32:050:32:08

like agave syrup,

0:32:080:32:10

believing that they're going to be beneficial to your health

0:32:100:32:12

or have less calories, because they don't.

0:32:120:32:14

And, in buying those,

0:32:140:32:15

the only difference to you will be on your purse,

0:32:150:32:17

where you'll be paying more money for them.

0:32:170:32:19

Next, more on those controversial caffeine-fuelled energy drinks.

0:32:260:32:30

You know, after just one can,

0:32:300:32:32

young people who knock back the bigger varieties

0:32:320:32:34

that now dominate the market,

0:32:340:32:36

will be right up to the limit of how much caffeine

0:32:360:32:38

it's generally recommended that they should consume in a day.

0:32:380:32:41

But, of course, many of them don't just stop with the one.

0:32:410:32:44

So, how responsible are the shops

0:32:440:32:46

when it comes to selling such powerful drinks

0:32:460:32:49

to their younger customers?

0:32:490:32:50

Well, we went shopping to find out.

0:32:500:32:52

Earlier in the programme, we met 15-year-old Corin Skinner,

0:32:550:32:58

who, like many of his friends,

0:32:580:33:00

used to be an avid drinker of energy drinks

0:33:000:33:02

such as Monster, Relentless and Rockstar.

0:33:020:33:05

There was this one time when I was in town when I had about four,

0:33:050:33:09

and I just kind of felt sick afterwards.

0:33:090:33:12

It just does something to you.

0:33:120:33:14

Corin has now cut down to just one or two energy drinks a month,

0:33:140:33:18

but his mum is not sure she's even happy with that.

0:33:180:33:21

So you're not really drinking it any more, are you?

0:33:210:33:23

No, I might have one today when I go to town.

0:33:230:33:26

I've not had one in about a month or so.

0:33:260:33:28

I'm worried about my son and other children.

0:33:280:33:31

You can just imagine being a teacher

0:33:310:33:33

having to teach a crowd of kids after lunch

0:33:330:33:35

when they've all had a couple of energy drinks,

0:33:350:33:37

that must be nightmare-ish.

0:33:370:33:39

I started drinking energy drinks when I was 12,

0:33:400:33:43

and...I just thought it was kind of cool to drink them

0:33:430:33:47

because my friends, they all drank them.

0:33:470:33:51

The big-brand energy drinks typically cost around a pound a can.

0:33:510:33:55

But with some own-label energy drinks costing as little as 35p,

0:33:550:34:00

they're well within the reach of those

0:34:000:34:01

with even the smallest pocket money allowance.

0:34:010:34:04

Sometimes, energy drinks are even cheaper than water.

0:34:040:34:07

You can buy bottled water for 80p,

0:34:070:34:10

which is much more expensive.

0:34:100:34:12

Cans like those that Corin and his friends would drink

0:34:120:34:15

each contain the maximum daily amount of caffeine

0:34:150:34:18

generally recommended for a child.

0:34:180:34:20

So, it's because some kids may buy three or even four in a day

0:34:200:34:23

that Susan thinks there should be tighter controls

0:34:230:34:26

on how they're sold.

0:34:260:34:27

I think they should be regulated like alcohol.

0:34:270:34:30

And, you know, I don't think 15, 16-year-old kids

0:34:300:34:34

are capable of making the informed judgments

0:34:340:34:37

about the effects that the ingredients of these drinks

0:34:370:34:40

can have on them.

0:34:400:34:41

So I think they should be regulated and they shouldn't be sold to them.

0:34:410:34:45

The government's school dinners advisor John Vincent

0:34:450:34:48

also believes that energy drinks high in caffeine

0:34:480:34:51

should not be so easily available to children.

0:34:510:34:54

There is some evidence that, for sports people, for sports teams,

0:34:540:34:57

a lot of caffeine consumed before a match

0:34:570:35:00

can actually have a beneficial effect on performance.

0:35:000:35:03

However, when it comes to children and the amount that they're consuming

0:35:030:35:06

and the way they're consuming energy drinks in schools,

0:35:060:35:09

they're very damaging.

0:35:090:35:10

The combination of caffeine and sugar in these drinks

0:35:100:35:12

is causing all sorts of havoc to behaviour and to health,

0:35:120:35:16

and we think children need to be protected.

0:35:160:35:18

First step is to encourage all head teachers

0:35:180:35:21

to follow the lead of those head teachers

0:35:210:35:24

who've banned the consumption of energy drinks in their schools.

0:35:240:35:28

The second thing, I believe,

0:35:280:35:30

is that retailers should not sell these drinks

0:35:300:35:33

to children under 16 years old.

0:35:330:35:35

The British Soft Drinks Association, which represents

0:35:350:35:39

the companies behind Relentless, Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar

0:35:390:35:43

recommends high-caffeine drinks should not be marketed at under-16s,

0:35:430:35:47

and suggests, "on a precautionary basis,"

0:35:470:35:50

that they're not consumed by them.

0:35:500:35:52

But they don't go far as saying they shouldn't be sold to them,

0:35:520:35:56

telling us there's no reason why that should be the case

0:35:560:35:59

when the drinks at most high street coffee chains

0:35:590:36:01

contain "the same or more caffeine."

0:36:010:36:03

Meanwhile, new laws mean that

0:36:060:36:08

the latest cans of all of these high-caffeine energy drinks

0:36:080:36:11

will have to carry a clear warning,

0:36:110:36:13

stressing they are not suitable for children.

0:36:130:36:16

But it may take a while for all the old cans

0:36:160:36:18

to work their way off the shelves.

0:36:180:36:20

And, certainly, when we checked a few shops in Manchester

0:36:200:36:23

several weeks after the new rules came in,

0:36:230:36:25

we couldn't find any cans of Relentless, Rockstar,

0:36:250:36:28

Monster or Red Bull

0:36:280:36:30

that yet had the new labels.

0:36:300:36:31

But as it stands,

0:36:330:36:34

whether they've got the warnings or not,

0:36:340:36:36

there's nothing to stop shops selling energy drinks

0:36:360:36:39

to children and young people.

0:36:390:36:41

Unless, of course, they choose not to.

0:36:410:36:43

We sent the 13-year-old son of one of our production team

0:36:440:36:47

into five shops in the same part of Manchester

0:36:470:36:50

to buy some of the higher-strength energy drinks,

0:36:500:36:52

to see if any of them asked his age,

0:36:520:36:54

or showed any concerns about him buying them.

0:36:540:36:57

None of them did.

0:36:570:36:58

Although one did make it clear to us

0:36:580:37:00

that they would not have sold the drinks to anyone under 11.

0:37:000:37:03

But there is one shop nearby that goes further.

0:37:030:37:06

Newsagent Sam Ulhaq has put his own voluntary ban in place,

0:37:060:37:10

and says he won't sell energy drinks to anyone under 16.

0:37:100:37:14

There's nothing...written down to say whether,

0:37:150:37:19

how old they've got to be,

0:37:190:37:21

and I feel a moral duty, obligation,

0:37:210:37:24

not to sell them to under-16s

0:37:240:37:26

for the sake of a few pennies.

0:37:260:37:28

It makes my conscience a bit clearer,

0:37:280:37:30

I'm not being a part of any harm to a child.

0:37:300:37:33

I think, in the long run, there has to be a standard age limit

0:37:330:37:38

because something is going get out of hand.

0:37:380:37:41

We contacted the companies behind

0:37:410:37:43

Relentless, Rockstar, Red Bull and Monster.

0:37:430:37:45

The ones that replied made it clear that

0:37:470:37:49

they didn't feel any sort of ban on selling to children was needed,

0:37:490:37:52

telling us that their drinks are marketed responsibly, and...

0:37:520:37:56

They reiterated that the labels make clear

0:38:000:38:02

both the caffeine levels

0:38:020:38:03

and that these are products that are not recommended for children.

0:38:030:38:07

Some of them pointed out that they do have cans

0:38:070:38:10

with smaller servings available,

0:38:100:38:11

while insisting, as the British Soft Drinks Association also did,

0:38:110:38:15

that there's as much, or more, caffeine to be found

0:38:150:38:18

in coffee shops on every high street.

0:38:180:38:21

As for Corin, he does still enjoy the occasional energy drink...

0:38:210:38:25

but nothing like as often as he used to.

0:38:250:38:28

I don't drink them as much.

0:38:280:38:29

I might drink them, like, once a month, but that's it,

0:38:290:38:32

I won't have much more because it's just a bit stupid.

0:38:320:38:35

Now, earlier in the programme,

0:38:400:38:41

we saw how some alternatives to sugar fared in a shortbread recipe.

0:38:410:38:45

Most of them were natural sweeteners,

0:38:450:38:47

like honey or agave nectar.

0:38:470:38:49

But one of them was artificial,

0:38:490:38:51

and it's been around for a while.

0:38:510:38:52

It's widely used in all sorts of food and drink,

0:38:520:38:55

but aspartame hasn't always had the best press.

0:38:550:38:58

And it's ended up with a reputation that, according to some,

0:38:580:39:01

it may not deserve.

0:39:010:39:02

Scare stories about aspartame

0:39:050:39:07

have seen the sweetener blamed for everything

0:39:070:39:09

from allergies and premature births,

0:39:090:39:11

to cancer and liver damage.

0:39:110:39:13

But should we really be so scared of it?

0:39:130:39:16

Aspartame is one of our most common sweeteners.

0:39:160:39:19

It's found in literally thousands of products,

0:39:190:39:22

in drinks, in artificial sweeteners that we find,

0:39:220:39:25

and it's something that is about 200 times sweeter than sugar.

0:39:250:39:29

But with aspartame, it can be very hard to separate fact from fiction,

0:39:300:39:34

especially when many of the scare stories

0:39:340:39:36

seem to come from reputable scientific sources.

0:39:360:39:39

The early sweeteners, like saccharine,

0:39:420:39:44

did produce some results that were worrying.

0:39:440:39:47

They were fed in very large quantities to rats

0:39:470:39:50

and did cause a form of cancer.

0:39:500:39:52

But the fact is almost anything,

0:39:520:39:54

if you feed it to rats in very large quantities,

0:39:540:39:56

will cause cancer.

0:39:560:39:57

If we were to try to reproduce that in human beings

0:39:570:40:00

we would literally have to go up to hundreds,

0:40:000:40:02

if not even, say, a thousand cans of drink,

0:40:020:40:04

to have the equivalent amount

0:40:040:40:06

and that just isn't going to happen.

0:40:060:40:09

Because aspartame is artificial,

0:40:120:40:14

there have been concerns about the way it changes in the body

0:40:140:40:18

creating potentially toxic by-products.

0:40:180:40:20

But Brian says this is a problem with many foods,

0:40:200:40:23

and the levels of toxin are tiny.

0:40:230:40:25

When we eat things, our stomachs break them down

0:40:250:40:28

and produce different chemicals.

0:40:280:40:30

And in the case of aspartame,

0:40:300:40:32

it is a poison, it is not good for you,

0:40:320:40:35

but the fact is, it only produces a very small quantity,

0:40:350:40:38

and plenty of other things we eat do as well.

0:40:380:40:40

Tomatoes, for instance, will produce more methanol than does aspartame.

0:40:400:40:44

Our body can cope with that level of toxin,

0:40:440:40:46

it isn't a problem.

0:40:460:40:48

It seems that however reputable the studies

0:40:480:40:50

showing aspartame can have some ill effects,

0:40:500:40:53

the problem with nearly all of them

0:40:530:40:55

is that they either relied on huge doses of the sweetener,

0:40:550:40:58

or were one-off studies that didn't show the same result again.

0:40:580:41:02

Back in 2010, a study in Denmark did find that

0:41:020:41:05

women who drank three cans of low-calorie fizzy drink a day

0:41:050:41:09

could have premature births.

0:41:090:41:11

But the fact is that this has been repeated several times since

0:41:110:41:16

and, every time, no effect has been discovered.

0:41:160:41:19

So this is again something where a single study has produced a problem.

0:41:190:41:24

In fact, there isn't one.

0:41:240:41:26

The European Food Safety Authority,

as well as our own Food Standards Agency,

0:41:290:41:32

have declared that aspartame is entirely safe

0:41:320:41:35

at the levels we actually eat it,

0:41:350:41:37

including for children and pregnant women.

0:41:370:41:40

In the end, it's like anything else,

0:41:400:41:42

in moderation it's fine,

0:41:420:41:43

you just don't want to overdo it.

0:41:430:41:44

Here at Rip-Off Britain,

0:41:540:41:56

we're always ready to investigate more of your stories

0:41:560:41:59

on any subject.

0:41:590:42:00

You can write to us at...

0:42:000:42:02

Or you can send us an e-mail to...

0:42:100:42:12

Remember that The Rip-Off team is ready and waiting

0:42:160:42:19

to investigate your stories.

0:42:190:42:21

Well, as we've seen today,

0:42:250:42:27

it isn't always easy to get the whole picture

0:42:270:42:29

about the foods that we eat.

0:42:290:42:31

Indeed, some of the information that's around

0:42:310:42:33

may not even be the full story,

0:42:330:42:34

and yet, that top line may have stuck in our minds

0:42:340:42:37

so vividly over time

0:42:370:42:39

that it just becomes something that we assume is definitely true,

0:42:390:42:42

-when, in fact, that might not be the case at all.

-Totally.

0:42:420:42:45

But, you know, the one that surprised me probably most of all

0:42:450:42:48

was the test that we did on those pesticides,

0:42:480:42:50

because we've become so used to people telling us

0:42:500:42:52

that supermarket fruit and veg is absolutely covered in chemicals,

0:42:520:42:56

-that you end up believing that it's true.

-You do.

0:42:560:42:59

And yet, when we went to the lab,

0:42:590:43:00

there really wasn't much difference between all the produce

0:43:000:43:03

that had been grown with pesticides and the ones that hadn't.

0:43:030:43:06

Well, I'm sure we'll all continue to get

0:43:060:43:08

conflicting reports on what's safe to eat

0:43:080:43:11

for many years to come.

0:43:110:43:12

So, if there's anything you'd like us to investigate,

0:43:120:43:14

or even debunk,

0:43:140:43:16

then let us know.

0:43:160:43:17

..is, as ever, the easiest way to get in touch.

0:43:190:43:22

And we'll be back to get our teeth

0:43:220:43:24

into more of your food stories very soon.

0:43:240:43:26

-So, till then, from all of us here, goodbye.

-Bye-bye.

-Bye-bye.
