I'm Rhodri Owen. I'm Lucy Owen. You're watching X-Ray. This man | :00:06. | :00:09.
ended up thousands in debts after taking up an offer from this | :00:09. | :00:11.
finance company. Why does millionaire boxer Joe Calzaghe | :00:11. | :00:16.
continue to back them? Flooding has been causing heartbreak for | :00:16. | :00:20.
families in mid-Wales. Now they could be getting a shock from their | :00:20. | :00:24.
insurance company. And Harveys, the furniture store, blames a | :00:24. | :00:34.
:00:34. | :00:48. | ||
customer's heat oil for this damage. Hello, tonight we're in Aberystwyth. | :00:48. | :00:52.
These sun is shining. We had better make the most of it. And later on | :00:52. | :00:55.
we're also going to be hearing more about damp of a different kind. | :00:55. | :00:58.
Damp caused by cavity wall insulation. Lots of you have been | :00:58. | :01:02.
in touch since we investigated the issue a few weeks ago. More on that | :01:02. | :01:04.
later. But first, a company that we've featured before on X-Ray. | :01:04. | :01:07.
It's a company which enjoy the backing of millionaire boxing | :01:07. | :01:10.
champion Joe Calzaghe. But it's also a company which got one boxing | :01:10. | :01:18.
mad pensioner deep into debt. They say they'll fight your corner | :01:19. | :01:24.
to reclaim your payment protection insurance, or PPI. And they've got | :01:24. | :01:29.
friends in high places. Boxing legend Joe Calzaghe is the public | :01:29. | :01:34.
face of We Fight Any Claim. With a successful sportsman fronting their | :01:34. | :01:36.
campaigns, the Cwmbran based company certainly seems to be | :01:36. | :01:46.
:01:46. | :01:48. | ||
punching above its weight. Their adverts are all over the radio. | :01:48. | :01:54.
Fight Any Claim we claims thousands of pounds of Miss sold pp I... | :01:54. | :01:57.
their customer service won't win any prizes. Back in March, we met | :01:57. | :02:00.
two customers who'd paid huge up- front fees to the company even | :02:00. | :02:05.
though they were sure they'd never had PPI! Yvonne Westmacott paid | :02:05. | :02:13.
2,800. Ceri Evans paid 700 in upfront fees. But 18 months on, | :02:13. | :02:18.
there was no sign of a payout. We got their money back for them. It | :02:18. | :02:21.
turned out We Fight Any Claims was part of a controversial group of | :02:21. | :02:26.
companies. The man in charge, Simon Chorlton, also ran Yes Loans, until | :02:26. | :02:29.
the Office of Fair Trading closed it down for deceitful and | :02:29. | :02:35.
oppressive business practices. Now we've had more complaints from | :02:35. | :02:41.
customers of We Fight Any Claim. But one case shocked us more than | :02:41. | :02:51.
The case of Brian Beese. As a young man, Brian was a keen boxer and | :02:51. | :02:57.
followed the sport throughout his life, as son Bill recalls. He was | :02:57. | :03:05.
quite competitive with his amateur boxing, had a couple of fights. One | :03:05. | :03:12.
time, he actually fought for the Welsh Boxing Amateur Association. | :03:12. | :03:17.
Good grief. So what was it that he did? He started as a mechanic in | :03:17. | :03:21.
the mines and went on to become a toolmaker and in around 1980 he | :03:21. | :03:26.
retired through ill health. March this year, aged 70, Brian | :03:26. | :03:31.
passed away. Only then did son Bill begin to uncover the sad truth | :03:31. | :03:38.
about his father's dealings with We Fight Any Claim. At the end of 2010, | :03:38. | :03:41.
We Fight Any Claim cold-called Brian, telling him he could get | :03:41. | :03:49.
almost 17,000 back for mis-sold PPI. But there was a catch - he'd | :03:49. | :03:58.
have to pay 30% of this upfront. How much did he pay to them? | :03:58. | :04:03.
think it was just under 5,600. Gosh, that's a huge amount of money, | :04:03. | :04:13.
:04:13. | :04:22. | ||
isn't it? Had no disposable income and the only way he could get it is | :04:22. | :04:25.
through Caddick cards, and he thought you did for his | :04:25. | :04:29.
grandchildren. With his boxing hero Joe Calzaghe fronting the show, | :04:29. | :04:32.
Brian went for the company's sales patter. But Brian didn't have the | :04:32. | :04:35.
money to pay the huge upfront fee. So We Fight Any Claim persuaded the | :04:35. | :04:39.
pensioner to go into debt, using his credit card. Months went by | :04:39. | :04:43.
with no sign of a payout. And the interest on Brian's card was | :04:43. | :04:53.
:04:53. | :04:55. | ||
mounting. I feel really angry. My father is paying roughly 150-200 | :04:55. | :05:00.
per month out of his state pension, but what was happening then, | :05:00. | :05:05.
because of the spiralling debt problem, he would then go down at | :05:05. | :05:15.
:05:15. | :05:17. | ||
the credit card, so he was never reducing his dead. -- his debt. | :05:17. | :05:21.
Last December, a whole year after he paid his fee, We Fight Any Claim | :05:21. | :05:24.
admitted there was no PPI on one of Brian's credit cards. They refunded | :05:24. | :05:28.
1,600 but still had almost 4,000 of his money. He certainly would | :05:28. | :05:32.
have been stressed out about it because he was never a person to be | :05:32. | :05:36.
in debt. Do you think your dad was actually chasing them to find out | :05:36. | :05:42.
where this money was? I think it was on a weekly basis he was | :05:42. | :05:45.
phoning them and asking them to account for the money and where it | :05:45. | :05:50.
was. With the stress and high blood pressure, it could have been a | :05:50. | :05:57.
contributory factor to the illness he suffered when he passed away. | :05:57. | :06:02.
Over the last few months, Bill has been struggling to sort out his | :06:02. | :06:07.
father's finances. I have been trying to work out what has been | :06:07. | :06:12.
going on with this company. And to try to work out something and see | :06:12. | :06:16.
what has gone on. We contacted the company, in an effort to track down | :06:16. | :06:20.
Brian's money. We Fight Any Claim say that two of Brian's claims have | :06:20. | :06:27.
been successful. One for 430 and one for just 20. Hardly the | :06:27. | :06:34.
17,000 they predicted. But in the circumstances, they have agreed to | :06:34. | :06:40.
refund the rest of Brian's money, almost 4,000. How do you feel now | :06:40. | :06:48.
then about everything that's happened? Does very much is a | :06:48. | :06:53.
bittersweet experience for myself. Pesch This is remote. It is nice to | :06:53. | :06:59.
have my father's money back, but I've also reform my father. I want | :06:59. | :07:03.
to make people aware of how vicious these people are and what they will | :07:03. | :07:08.
do to get your money. That's such a sad story. It is. But, | :07:08. | :07:11.
thankfully, we managed to get them their money back. We also | :07:11. | :07:13.
understand that the company no longer take upfront fees from | :07:13. | :07:17.
customers. But Joe Calzaghe's been less forthcoming. Despite our best | :07:17. | :07:20.
efforts to contact him, he has been very reluctant to answer our | :07:20. | :07:25.
questions. We did speak to his father and former trainer, Enzo, | :07:25. | :07:29.
who confirmed that Joe is paid to endorse the company. But has never | :07:29. | :07:32.
looked into their business practices. And it doesn't sound | :07:33. | :07:38.
like he's in much of a hurry to do Now, If you've got anything you'd | :07:38. | :07:42.
like us to investigate get in touch, our number is 03703 334 334. Don't | :07:42. | :07:46.
forget to include a phone number so we can get back to you. Or, if you | :07:46. | :07:49.
prefer, you can email. The address is [email protected]. | :07:49. | :07:58.
When nurse Gill Johnson splashed out on a new floor for her home, | :07:58. | :08:08.
:08:08. | :08:13. | ||
she thought it would be able to Hello, I am having a problem with | :08:13. | :08:16.
my tiles. Two months after fitting them they started to pit, little | :08:16. | :08:20.
black holes appearing all over them and I am wondering if X-Ray can | :08:20. | :08:30.
:08:30. | :08:34. | ||
Gill spent 300 at Topps Tiles in Flint new tiles for her hallway. | :08:34. | :08:37.
Hang on, Topps Tiles, shouldn't that mean they sell top tiles with | :08:37. | :08:47.
a top class service? Hmm, let's see. Hi, Gill. Lovely to see you. Your | :08:47. | :08:54.
cottage is absolutely gorgeous. So, Gill, why did you decide that you | :08:54. | :08:59.
wanted a new floor? Because we had had carpet down and changed it two | :08:59. | :09:03.
or three times but with the dogs in and out all the time and | :09:03. | :09:05.
continually getting covered in hairs, I just wanted something that | :09:05. | :09:09.
was going to be easy to clean. Something that was going to be | :09:09. | :09:13.
permanent. And you went to Topps Tiles? Yes. Simply because they | :09:13. | :09:16.
have quite a large store quite close to us, so it was convenient | :09:16. | :09:22.
to go to Flint. And did you tell the sales staff where the tiles | :09:22. | :09:26.
would be laid? Yes, I explained to them that it was going to be quite | :09:26. | :09:30.
a high traffic area anyway. And what did they say about that? No | :09:30. | :09:33.
problem. Didn't mention that they were only suitable for low traffic | :09:33. | :09:38.
areas. So, you left there very happy with your purchase? Yes, | :09:38. | :09:43.
absolutely. So what went happened? Well, we were delighted when we put | :09:43. | :09:46.
them down. They looked lovely for about two months and then little | :09:46. | :09:49.
holes started appearing in them, just in particular where we walked. | :09:49. | :09:53.
And so did you get back in touch with Topps Tiles? I did, I went | :09:53. | :09:58.
back to complain to them. And when I spoke to the salesperson there, | :09:58. | :10:06.
his first words were, "Oh, yes, they are inclined to pit." And I | :10:06. | :10:10.
said nobody mentioned it to us. And he said, well, there's a notice on | :10:10. | :10:13.
them saying honed and filled. didn't even see the notice but it | :10:13. | :10:17.
wouldn't have meant anything to me anyway. It didn't explain anything. | :10:17. | :10:20.
After Gill and her husband Steve complained, Topps Tiles sent out a | :10:20. | :10:25.
tradesman to fill the holes and get them back to their former glory. | :10:25. | :10:28.
But two months later they were writing to the company again after | :10:28. | :10:33.
the filler turned an unsightly black. So this is the flooring | :10:33. | :10:38.
then? Yes, just there really is one of the worst ones. Let me have a | :10:38. | :10:42.
look at that. So this is the pitting you have been talking | :10:42. | :10:46.
about? That's right. And some of them are really quite deep. Oh, yes, | :10:46. | :10:50.
you can feel them. And they are very visible, aren't they, too? And | :10:50. | :10:53.
this isn't how it should look at all. No, well if you lift the | :10:53. | :10:56.
carpet, this is where the dogs lie, underneath where it has been | :10:56. | :11:02.
covered is absolutely fine. Gill, what would you like me to try | :11:02. | :11:07.
and do? I'd love you to get me some new tiles. I'm on the case! Now, | :11:07. | :11:11.
here's a good tip for you. According to the law, anything you | :11:11. | :11:15.
buy from a shop must be fit for purpose. So, basically, it should | :11:15. | :11:20.
do the job it's described to do. Gill says she made it very clear to | :11:20. | :11:25.
Topps Tiles she needed a floor that could withstand a lot of walking. | :11:25. | :11:29.
So we got in touch with the company who told us they think Gill was | :11:29. | :11:31.
sold the right tiles but they needed regular maintenance to keep | :11:31. | :11:34.
them looking good and a leaflet telling customers this was | :11:34. | :11:40.
displayed in the shop. But Topps Tiles admits that Gill was given | :11:40. | :11:42.
poor customer service and in the spirit of good will, they're | :11:43. | :11:52.
:11:53. | :11:55. | ||
prepared to replace the tiles free of charge. Thanks. Topps Tiles are | :11:55. | :12:01.
going to replace all that whilst completely. And that is another | :12:01. | :12:06.
case closed. Another great result. Hopefully, | :12:06. | :12:09.
Gill's floor will soon be looking as good as new. Now, a few weeks | :12:09. | :12:12.
ago we carried out a major undercover investigation into the | :12:12. | :12:14.
way cavity wall insulation companies operate in Wales. Yes, we | :12:14. | :12:17.
wanted to know what kind of advice the insulation companies would give | :12:17. | :12:24.
us when we invited them to a house which was totally unsuitable. | :12:24. | :12:27.
An expert surveyor had told us that this house in Rhoose near Barry | :12:27. | :12:30.
would be damp within months if the wall cavities were filled with | :12:30. | :12:37.
So we rigged the house with hidden cameras. Then we invited some | :12:38. | :12:43.
leading insulation companies to carry out a survey. Only one | :12:43. | :12:47.
advised against getting the insulation. One of them, the Mark | :12:47. | :12:52.
Group, was particularly keen to sign us up. There's no chance of | :12:52. | :12:56.
this wool stuff making our house damp? No, absolutely. You won't | :12:56. | :13:00.
have a problem with it. It's guaranteed. Well, since we showed | :13:00. | :13:04.
that investigation, lots of you have been in touch. One or two of | :13:04. | :13:07.
you have said you are completely happy with your insulation and we | :13:07. | :13:10.
should emphasise that for most houses, it works really well. | :13:10. | :13:13.
many of you have had terrible experiences. Julian Dyer from | :13:13. | :13:18.
Swansea says his living room used to look like this. But since he had | :13:18. | :13:21.
cavity wall insulation in 2010, he's had to redecorate four times | :13:21. | :13:28.
and it's still a mess. Mark and Jeanette Jeffery from Barry had to | :13:28. | :13:32.
have their insulation removed but the damp problem is still there. | :13:32. | :13:37.
And Juliet Lewis from Bettws near Newport has also been in touch. She | :13:37. | :13:40.
says the paint on her walls has been cracking and falling off since | :13:40. | :13:49.
her landlord had cavity wall insulation two years ago. | :13:49. | :13:52.
While the sun is shining here in Aberystwyth today, just a few weeks | :13:52. | :13:55.
ago, heavy rain caused flash flooding in villages not far from | :13:55. | :13:58.
here. Since then, all those families who were affected have had | :13:58. | :14:08.
to start rebuilding their lives. The flooding this weekend may have | :14:08. | :14:11.
missed Wales, but the effects of last month's rain are still being | :14:11. | :14:15.
felt around Aberystwyth. A month's rain fell in 24 hours and | :14:15. | :14:19.
parts of the area were under five feet of water. | :14:19. | :14:22.
They are still clearing up and today Prince Charles was visiting | :14:22. | :14:27.
victims. Some people have lost everything | :14:27. | :14:30.
and have no hope of getting it back, because they were not insured. | :14:30. | :14:34.
People like Marian Erskine and her family. | :14:34. | :14:38.
So this is it, home sweet home? Yes, it was. | :14:38. | :14:48.
:14:48. | :14:51. | ||
So shall we go and have a look? The first thing that hits you is | :14:51. | :14:57.
the smell. That musty damp smell. | :14:57. | :15:01.
Oh, look at it. Oh, Marian, it must be horrible for | :15:01. | :15:05.
you seeing it like this. It is very sad. | :15:05. | :15:15.
:15:15. | :15:26. | ||
Were you insured? What happened on the D of the flops? I was watching | :15:26. | :15:34.
on the television never knowing what would happen to us. The water | :15:34. | :15:44.
came up through the floor. It was totally unexpected. And where you | :15:44. | :15:47.
insured? No, we could not afford it, with | :15:47. | :15:49.
the cost of the gas and electric going up. | :15:49. | :15:52.
We did not have enough money to pay for insurance. | :15:52. | :15:56.
Marian is now living on a friend's sofa. One of her sons is sleeping | :15:56. | :16:00.
in a car, with the family dog. But there are some who did have | :16:00. | :16:03.
cover, but will not claim, because the excess on their policies was so | :16:03. | :16:07.
high. We have heard about one man from | :16:07. | :16:10.
Talybont, just up the road from Marian. | :16:10. | :16:14.
Now, he could afford to do the right thing and got insurance. | :16:14. | :16:18.
But now he can not claim on it, because his excess is a staggering | :16:18. | :16:22.
7,500. And his furniture just was not | :16:22. | :16:27.
worth that. These are not isolated cases. | :16:27. | :16:30.
And it looks like more people in areas like this could be priced out | :16:30. | :16:34.
of the insurance market. I have been getting insurance | :16:34. | :16:40.
quotes for a number of addresses in areas hit by June's floods. | :16:40. | :16:44.
Some truly astonishing results here. When we said the addresses had not | :16:44. | :16:49.
flooded, we got dozens of quotes, starting at about 150 a go. | :16:49. | :16:52.
But when we said the same properties had flooded, we only got | :16:52. | :16:59.
one quote and the premiums were starting at over 500 each. | :16:59. | :17:05.
That is a price rise of more than 350%. | :17:05. | :17:11.
I think it is clear why some people just cannot afford to get insurance. | :17:11. | :17:14.
In fact, the charity National Flood Forum are calling for a radical | :17:14. | :17:17.
overhaul of the entire insurance industry, to make sure people in | :17:17. | :17:23.
flood-hit areas can still afford to insure their homes. | :17:23. | :17:26.
At the Riverside Caravan Park, they are still clearing up after the | :17:26. | :17:29.
floods. Dave Edwards was here when the | :17:29. | :17:34.
water swept through. So what was it like on the night it | :17:34. | :17:37.
happened? It was just horrendous. We were | :17:37. | :17:42.
here with four children and we were just focused on getting them out. | :17:42. | :17:45.
It was coming in from that diection and that direction. | :17:45. | :17:48.
He had insurance to cover his losses, but others were not so | :17:48. | :17:50.
lucky. Park owner Stephen South shows me | :17:50. | :17:54.
around. Oh, Steve, it is heartbreaking | :17:54. | :17:59.
seeing this. Yes, it is pretty devastating. | :17:59. | :18:02.
And you see remnants of happy times, happy holidays - kids' footballs | :18:02. | :18:07.
and rugby balls. Shall we clear some of this out? | :18:07. | :18:11.
Yeah, yeah. This family came from the Midlands. | :18:11. | :18:14.
They had, or they have got, a disabled son. He used to love to | :18:14. | :18:16.
come down here. Were they insured for this? | :18:17. | :18:21.
Unfortunately, no, they were not. Some of the touring caravans were | :18:21. | :18:24.
not insured, but Stephen helps insure the static caravans on the | :18:24. | :18:27.
site. A big hike in premiums could be | :18:27. | :18:31.
catastrophic. If your insurance went up 300% for | :18:31. | :18:35.
this site, would you be able to continue with your business? | :18:35. | :18:38.
No, no, it would be impossible, really. | :18:38. | :18:43.
And how does that make you feel? Well, it is 23 years of a business | :18:43. | :18:47.
gone down the pan. Sweat and tears and it has all come | :18:47. | :18:53.
to nothing, pretty well. It has been a really tough time for | :18:53. | :18:56.
those affected by the floods and the possibility of rising insurance | :18:56. | :19:06.
:19:06. | :19:06. | ||
costs is not going to help. So what do the people around here think? | :19:06. | :19:10.
think it is something that reinsurance companies just try and | :19:10. | :19:15.
get out of pain for staff. If you pay your insurance, they should pay | :19:15. | :19:21.
out. It is just one of these things, but I do not think people should | :19:21. | :19:29.
have to pay more. Ensure in scum is a there to make sure everything is | :19:29. | :19:33.
sorted out afterwards, but they are also a profit-making industry, so | :19:33. | :19:41.
the are not going to take met when the sort of things happen. 35 years | :19:41. | :19:46.
he are saying was the last time that flooded and they're going to | :19:46. | :19:52.
charge people extra for that. They should accept it. That is what you | :19:52. | :19:55.
pay insurance for at the end of the day. | :19:56. | :20:00.
Lots of strong opinions there. But there is some good news for | :20:00. | :20:02.
those affected. This shop has been opened for | :20:02. | :20:05.
people to donate household goods and Hazel Lloyd Lubran is one of | :20:05. | :20:15.
:20:15. | :20:19. | ||
the volunteers. All of the volunteers have donated a huge | :20:19. | :20:25.
amount. We have been inundated with everything you could imagine for | :20:25. | :20:32.
you're house. We have clothing, shoes, Brading, towels. The second | :20:32. | :20:41.
shop floor is absolutely full of stuff - Ted's toys, books, DVDs. | :20:41. | :20:49.
there is a warehouse? Yes, there is a warehouse full of white goods. We | :20:49. | :20:53.
have actually had to stop taking donations because we do not have | :20:53. | :21:01.
many more space for them. A Hazell, if they can interrupt you for a | :21:01. | :21:09.
minute. You have been helping co- ordinate all this. The their | :21:09. | :21:16.
families and couples who have lost everything, who are having to be | :21:16. | :21:25.
rehoused and B are wanting to help them carry on from day to day. | :21:26. | :21:29.
Thank you. Next, we thought we had heard every excuse in the book from | :21:29. | :21:33.
furniture companies about why their sofas may not be up to scratch. But | :21:33. | :21:36.
this is the weirdest one we have come across. Rhodri has got the | :21:36. | :21:46.
:21:46. | :21:51. | ||
There are a few reasons why you might not want too much grease in | :21:51. | :21:56.
your hair, but I have never heard of one like this before. | :21:56. | :22:00.
Graham Walters from Tongwynlais is a man with a fine head of hair. But | :22:00. | :22:04.
recently he feels it has come in for some unjustified criticism. | :22:04. | :22:08.
I have had the same hairdresser for 20 years and she has said that I do | :22:08. | :22:12.
not have greasy hair! But it is not Graham's hairdresser | :22:12. | :22:16.
who has got a problem with his luscious locks - it is the people | :22:16. | :22:23.
that sold him his settee! Hiya, how are you doing? Nice to | :22:23. | :22:28.
see you. Graham and his wife Jean paid | :22:28. | :22:31.
almost 1,200 for two sofas from Harvey The Furniture Store in | :22:31. | :22:37.
Cardiff in August 2010. They were delivered in December | :22:37. | :22:40.
that year. The couple also bought an additional leather care policy | :22:40. | :22:45.
for 185 and a leather care kit for 40. | :22:45. | :22:49.
Jean was meticulous about looking after her new suite. | :22:49. | :22:53.
So when did you first notice that there was a problem with it? | :22:53. | :22:56.
About 13 months after we purchased it, I happened to notice a little | :22:56. | :23:01.
orange speck on the headrest. And as Jean tried to maintain her | :23:01. | :23:06.
sofa, the problem just got worse. You could feel the leather coming | :23:06. | :23:09.
away, you know. I agreed with him there was | :23:09. | :23:12.
something wrong and, as he says, it was getting bigger and bigger. | :23:12. | :23:14.
After the couple complained to Harvey's, they sent a | :23:14. | :23:17.
representative round to inspect the sofa and he came up with a | :23:17. | :23:21.
surprising cause for the problems they had had. | :23:21. | :23:25.
They wrote back to us and said it looked very much like it was hair | :23:25. | :23:33.
oil. That was natural and that it was not a manufacturing fault. | :23:33. | :23:35.
You must have been shocked at these responses? | :23:35. | :23:40.
They do not know me, they have not seen me, so how can they say this? | :23:40. | :23:43.
Jean and Graham insist they are always sitting in different seats. | :23:43. | :23:46.
If there was a problem with head oil, it would affect all the | :23:46. | :23:56.
headrests, not just the one that is They called in a leather expert, | :23:56. | :23:59.
Keith Gibson, an independent furniture specialist. He has been | :23:59. | :24:03.
in the business 35 years. After inspecting their suite, Keith | :24:03. | :24:07.
has got a different take on what has caused the problems. | :24:07. | :24:11.
Keith, you have had a good look at the sofa here. What are your | :24:11. | :24:15.
thoughts on what you have seen? Harveys said to Mr Walters that | :24:15. | :24:19.
there is a build-up of grease. This is just a cloth. I have wiped this | :24:19. | :24:23.
leather here and you can see there is no grease on my cloth at all, | :24:23. | :24:28.
yet the leather itself is still just peeling away, effortlessly. | :24:28. | :24:32.
So it's a breakdown of sealant. I believe it is done in the | :24:32. | :24:34.
manufacturing stage, where there has not been enough sealant put on | :24:34. | :24:38.
the product. And the only way to rectify it is | :24:38. | :24:40.
to reseal the leather. Unfortunately for Jean and Graham, | :24:40. | :24:43.
Harvey's will not accept Keith's findings, because he is not VAT | :24:43. | :24:46.
registered! What does he make of that? | :24:46. | :24:52.
No, I am not VAT registered, but I do have qualifications. | :24:52. | :24:55.
I got Distinction in City & Guilds, I did a five-year apprenticeship | :24:55. | :24:58.
and so forth. I have been the sole upholsterer | :24:58. | :25:00.
for numerous companies and my expertise in this range should | :25:00. | :25:04.
qualify me to come out and look at this leather and say what is wrong | :25:04. | :25:06.
with it. Harvey's own video shows their | :25:06. | :25:09.
factory in Bridgend. They say the leather is checked | :25:09. | :25:12.
before being made into covers, but Jean and Graham do not think the | :25:12. | :25:16.
quality control process was up to scratch on their sofa. | :25:16. | :25:19.
The company claims each item made in Bridgend is checked before being | :25:19. | :25:24.
dispatched. But John and Jenny Day from Cwmbran | :25:24. | :25:27.
have had that sinking feeling since they received their suite last | :25:27. | :25:35.
November. I went to see for myself. Sit down and try. You will find it | :25:35. | :25:41.
very soft, very dippy. I can tell it straight away. At the | :25:41. | :25:44.
back here, isn't it? Completely dips right down. | :25:44. | :25:49.
I can feel a big metal bar, as well. Yeah, a lot of squeaking there. | :25:49. | :25:51.
That is really quite soft again, that is. | :25:51. | :25:57.
Very soft. Whoa! That's right down, that is. I | :25:57. | :26:00.
hit something hard at the bottom there, as well. | :26:00. | :26:04.
Yeah, a lot of squeaking there. That would drive me bonkers. | :26:04. | :26:06.
It does, yeah. And, finally, this must be the | :26:06. | :26:10.
worst. Completely sunk down in this one. | :26:10. | :26:13.
John has been trying to sort things out with Harvey's and says even the | :26:13. | :26:18.
rep they sent to examine the sofa did find faults. | :26:18. | :26:20.
But the company now claims the suite is "within the manufacturing | :26:20. | :26:28.
tolerance", whatever that means. How has this left you feeling? | :26:28. | :26:32.
I would like them to take it back and give us a refund on the money, | :26:32. | :26:35.
because I would never feel safe having anything off them again. | :26:35. | :26:38.
I do not want to go through this again, I have had enough. | :26:38. | :26:42.
What would you like to do with the sofa, if money was no object? | :26:42. | :26:47.
I would burn it. Definitely burn it. Get rid of it, you know, and that | :26:47. | :26:52.
is an end of it and it has gone then - out of the way. | :26:52. | :27:02.
:27:02. | :27:03. | ||
Some very unhappy customers there. Absolutely. And we put all the | :27:03. | :27:06.
points about the hair oils and the sinking sofa to Harveys and they | :27:06. | :27:09.
just refused to make any comment at all. Not very impressive. | :27:09. | :27:12.
Now, last week, you might remember we were in Tenby, where hardly | :27:12. | :27:15.
anyone could tell a fake pound coin from a real one. | :27:15. | :27:18.
Well, this week, we have got some more fakes, This time it is make-up. | :27:18. | :27:21.
A woman from Gilwern in Monmouthshire was selling this fake | :27:21. | :27:24.
Max Factor mascara on eBay. This is the fake, which she was | :27:24. | :27:26.
selling for a fiver. And this is the real thing, which | :27:26. | :27:30.
you can buy on the high street for just a few quid more. | :27:30. | :27:34.
The packaging on the fake does look pretty convincing. | :27:34. | :27:36.
Yes, but Powys Trading Standards found the stuff inside contained | :27:36. | :27:39.
high levels of lead, which is obviously not going to do you any | :27:39. | :27:44.
good at all. Leanne Wetheim, who was selling the | :27:44. | :27:47.
mascara and other fake make-up, has now been brought to justice. | :27:48. | :27:50.
She has been given an eight-month suspended prison sentence and 160 | :27:50. | :27:57.
hours community service. But it goes to show how careful you | :27:57. | :27:59.
have to be when you are bargain hunting. | :27:59. | :28:02.
And that is all we have got time for this week. | :28:02. | :28:05.
