Trick or treat? | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
Do you know what's in the latest sweets your kids want to eat? | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
I've never checked a label on sweets in my life. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
I don't think twice. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
But now I wonder whether I should. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
And what you need to know about keeping safe this Halloween. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
Hello, welcome to the programme. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
Tonight, we're at one of Wales' most haunted homes, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
Newton House, and later in the programme, we're going to be doing | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
some trick or treating of our own, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
finding out whether people in nearby Llandeilo | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
know the dos and don'ts of keeping safe this Halloween. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
First though, whilst some of us will be going for | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
super-bright locks tomorrow, for many people, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
dying their hair is something that happens all year round. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
But as Rachel has been finding out, | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
hair dye can have hidden dangers. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
There are some shocking pictures in this report. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
-ARCHIVE: -Her hair sparkles with fresh, radiant colour... | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
We've been colouring our hair | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
with commercially made dyes for decades. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
And with celebrities leading the way, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
many of us will change hair colour at the drop of a hat. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
But with hair dyeing comes risk. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
These students are learning how to do it properly. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
But whilst all manufacturers say that | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
their products are safe to use if the instructions | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
are followed, there are dangers. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
Sammi Ford has died her own hair for years. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
She loves experimenting with different colours. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
I've dyed my hair quite a few times before. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
So I've been a green, blue, blonde. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
I've had so many different hair and styles and colours | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
and, yeah, I like it. Well, I did. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
In March this year, things went badly wrong. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
I just dyed my hair as normal, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
rinsed it off till the water had ran clear. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
Came back down the stairs and then, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
within half an hour, my head was itching. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
And probably about an hour, two hours after, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
I sort of had a burning, itching at the sides and round here. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:18
My ears had started to swell up. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
And it just got progressively worse from there. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
It was soon obvious she was having a severe allergic reaction. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
It was really frightening. I was scared. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
I didn't want to look in the mirror. I didn't even recognise myself. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
After the swelling went down, she was left coping with | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
painful sores for weeks, before making a full recovery. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:42
But if Sammi had taken a patch test, it could have been avoided. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:49
Manufacturers state a patch test must be carried out | 0:03:49 | 0:03:53
48 hours before hair is dyed. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
This is for home dye kits and dyes used by | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
professionals in hair salons. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
The hairdressers' own federation goes further, saying | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
allergy testing is a must for every salon. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
In patch tests, a small amount of the product is put onto | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
the skin and left for 48 hours. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
It's a strong indication as to whether the user may react or not. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
Donna has been a hairdresser for almost 30 years. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
She always carries out the test, | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
but does come under pressure from customers to skip it. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
On a weekly basis, you'll have somebody walk in who wants a colour | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
today or tomorrow. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
They haven't got time for a 48-hour patch or skin test | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
to check that they're going to be OK. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
And you have to turn them away. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
Worryingly, Donna has also seen a rise in the number of | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
customers reacting to the skin test. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
We are used to seeing normally perhaps one reaction a year. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:03
But certainly since May this year, we've seen three. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
And it's quite scary, it's quite frightening to think that, | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
had that service been carried out without | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
them having had that skin test, then you can just imagine | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
what could have happened to them. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
And if that happens with adults, | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
small wonder there's added protection for children. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
The industry's own guidelines say that no salons should | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
dye the hair of under-16s. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
Later in the programme we go undercover | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
to find out if hairdressers are sticking to the rules | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
and why one of the industry's leaders is horrified. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
I cannot tell you how incensed I am. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
I cannot articulate that. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
We are trying to become ambassadors, | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
to raise the professionalism of the hair industry, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
and then I get shown this. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
I'm appalled. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
Yes, some shocking revelations to come. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
Now, if you're looking forward to dressing up for Halloween tomorrow, | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
and, of course, there's Bonfire Night at the weekend, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
you're going to want to make sure that you and your family are safe. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
In recent years, horror stories about flammable costumes | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
have hit the press, and this year there are warnings about the dangers | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
of cosmetic contact lenses. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
Time to put visitors here and people in Llandeilo to the test. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:26
Welcome to our Halloween horrors quiz. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
And our first question... | 0:06:29 | 0:06:30
-I would hope so. -I would assume so. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
If it had that mark on it. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
Yeah, I would trust that it's safe, | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
but I don't actually know what CE stands for. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
The CE marking has been around for a long time so I would | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
say it is safe, yeah. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
I don't know what it means, but I would assume it meant it's safe. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
I have seen it. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:54
Question two... | 0:06:55 | 0:06:56
If they're made in the UK, and they look like that, | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
with the packaging, I would have thought yes. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
I guess...yes? | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
Yeah, probably an opticians, but, yeah, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
not in just your joke shops. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
I've seen them for sale in the market in Carmarthen and that, yeah. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
-So you think that's legal? -Yeah. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
And here's the last question... | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
Yes, I think... | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
Hmm. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:33 | |
On Bonfire Night, I think it is illegal to set them off. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:37
I think it still is, yeah. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
-Yes. -It should be, anyway. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
Yes. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44 | |
I think you are allowed to set off fireworks. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
-After 11 o'clock? -After 11 clock, possibly. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
-Until what time, do you reckon? -Possibly midnight? | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
All will be revealed later in the programme. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
Still to come... | 0:07:59 | 0:08:00
They chose identical trucks to help them build their business, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
but these partners say their Ford Rangers have let them down. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:08
We can't do our job without these cars. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
And we just keep getting them back and getting them back | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
and they're not right. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
Like it or loathe it, | 0:08:16 | 0:08:17
trick or treating is a big part of Halloween. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
But how confident can you be that the sweets | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
your children collect on the doorstep | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
or buy in the shops are safe to eat? | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
# I press my nose against the pane | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
# Of the little toffee shop. # | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
I don't know about you, but I'm a bit of a sweetie monster, | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
and seeing treats like these take me right back to my childhood. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
But times have moved on and although traditional, | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
locally-made sweets like these are still being enjoyed, more and more | 0:08:50 | 0:08:55
shops are selling sweets imported from across the Atlantic. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:59
American sweets are increasingly popular in the UK. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
But to create those eye-catching colours, manufacturers | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
sometimes use food colourings we in the UK are quite wary about. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:11
Six popular food colourings are known as the Southampton Six | 0:09:12 | 0:09:17
because, back in 2007, scientists at Southampton University | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
identified a link between those colours | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
and hyperactivity in children. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
Their research hit the headlines | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
and there was talk of banning them altogether. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
The appealingly named Sunset Yellow is | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
one of three shades of this colour on the naughty list. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
There are also three shades of red with equally | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
exotic names like Allura Red. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
Labelling on imported sweets must comply with UK/EU law. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:53
The American names and numbers for colours just won't do. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
Labelling must use the E number and correct name for the colour. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
And if any of the Southampton Six are present, | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
this warning must be used. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:07
Kids seem to be the biggest fans of the latest trend in imported sweets, | 0:10:09 | 0:10:13
so I'm meeting up with my son and his friends | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
to find out what they like. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:17
So what are your favourites? Will, what's your favourite? | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
-Toxic waste. -Toxic waste! | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
That sounds disgusting. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:23
-Brain blasters. -How often do you have sweeties? | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
-I don't know. -You don't know? | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
How often would you like to have sweeties? | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
-Every ten minutes. -But will Mummy let you? | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
-No. -No, I bet. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:34
So how do you feel after you've had quite a lot of sweets? | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
Do they have an effect on you at all, do you think? | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
-Yeah, you go hyper. -Do you? | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
-Do you run around? -Yeah, probably. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
I wonder if the other mums have concerns. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
Time to catch up with Sara Johnson and Anne Thomas. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
Now, obviously our kids are going to eat sweets from time to time, | 0:10:54 | 0:10:57
aren't they? Sometimes quite often. | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
Does it worry you about the ingredients? | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
Do you check the labels? | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
No, never. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
I've never checked a label on sweets in my life, actually. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
I don't think twice. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
But now I wonder whether I should. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:13
I have to say, I'm the same. I very rarely check the labels. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
-Do you? -Well, I do. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:17
I don't like the boys having blue sweets, because I just think | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
that it's synthetic. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
Now, I don't know, I always think that | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
it's very much to do with hyperactivity in kids, and I've got | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
busy enough kids as it is - I don't want them hyperactive! | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
How does it make you feel if I tell you that | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
there are some sweets that are on the market being sold | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
with illegal labelling? | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
It's slightly worrying, isn't it? Let's be honest. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:42
I'd like to think I know what I'm buying. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:44
You'd read the label in good faith, wouldn't you? | 0:11:44 | 0:11:48
We know some children can be affected by certain food colourings, | 0:11:48 | 0:11:53
and the Discovery Centre in Pontypridd specialises in | 0:11:53 | 0:11:56
diagnosing children with ADHD. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
ADHD is around focus, concentration, hyperactivity, impulsivity. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
So what does that mean for the parents? | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
You've got a busy child who won't sit still, | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
who's running around, who may act impulsively. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
How clear is the link between these six food colourings | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
and ADHD in children? | 0:12:15 | 0:12:16
We know that some children are more sensitive to food colourings | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
than others, and they may not necessarily have ADHD. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
But what we know - about one in three kids with ADHD have | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
some effect, if they have some of the colourings, | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
on their behaviour. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:31
We don't really know why, but we understand | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33
that they can become more hyperactive and impulsive. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:37
Well, we've been shopping, and we've bought a selection | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
of imported sweets, and there are huge variations on the labelling. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
What about those? | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
Well, these are from America so they've got American system, | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
which is different, so we don't have E numbers. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
We've got red, yellow, turmeric colour, beeswax... | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
It's a completely different labelling system. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:55
So even though they were bought in the UK, | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
if I was to look at these, I would be very confused, | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
because it doesn't look like the EU/UK labelling system. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
And it is illegal not to have the correct labelling on a food product. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
It is, which is highly surprising. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
We've got such a variation here, we really do. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
And we've got some that really just say "colour". | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
So that doesn't tell me anything. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
-That's going to be no use to parents at all, is it? -Completely. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
And how concerned are you by the variation that we see here? | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
I'm amazed, honestly. I really didn't think that the labelling | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
would be so variable or no labels or different labels. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
And I didn't think there would be such inconsistency. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:30
So I'm really surprised. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
So it's up to you. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
If you want to keep an eye on what your kids are eating, | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
there's only one thing to do - | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
check the labels for the Southampton Six. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
Now, earlier we asked people here at Newton House and in Llandeilo | 0:13:43 | 0:13:47
how much they knew about Halloween safety. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
Our first question... | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
Well, Steve, you're the expert. What's the answer? | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
Well, the simple answer to that question, Lucy, is yes. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
If it does have a CE mark it is safe, but only to some extent. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:07
All fancy dress outfits and Halloween costumes comply with | 0:14:07 | 0:14:11
European toy safety regulations, which is not quite as stringent as | 0:14:11 | 0:14:14
with regular children's clothing. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
Some of the manufacturers now are doing additional testing to their | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
clothing, which is something I'd always recommend looking out for | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
if you are looking for an outfit for a child. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
But it's still important to remember the clothing could still | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
catch fire if it was affected by a direct, naked flame. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:31
So the most important thing to remember with children | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
is to keep them away from any naked flame at any time. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
Our next question... | 0:14:36 | 0:14:37
Here's optometrist Frank Maloney. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
No, contact lenses should only be bought | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
from a registered optometrist. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
The reason for this is that it ensures the quality of the product | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
you have, but also ensures the advice you're getting | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
is sound advice and keeps you safe during the party season, | 0:14:56 | 0:15:00
as well as just Halloween. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
And our final question... | 0:15:03 | 0:15:05
-Is it, Steve? -For most nights of the year, Lucy, it would be illegal. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
But Bonfire Night is one of the few exceptions we have during the year. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:19
The others being New Year, Diwali and Chinese New Year, where you can | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
set fireworks until midnight. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:25
We'd always recommend that people attend professionally run, | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
public displays, as generally they're a lot better value for money | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
and also a lot safer. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:32
If you are, however, having a firework party at your home, | 0:15:32 | 0:15:37
we'd recommend you follow the firework code, | 0:15:37 | 0:15:39
which should be included in all fireworks purchased. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
We want everybody to have a great time this firework night, | 0:15:42 | 0:15:44
but we want you to do it safely. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:46
Great advice, Steve, thank you. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:48
Next - Omar's been to meet two best friends, | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
who are experiencing identical problems. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:54
Business partners Rob Morris and John Bater from Caerphilly | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
met as teenagers and they've been best mates ever since. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:05
As they both work in construction, setting up a company together | 0:16:05 | 0:16:08
seemed an obvious choice. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
Putting my skills together and Rob's skills together, | 0:16:11 | 0:16:13
it was the natural thing to do in the end, I suppose. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
-We've been together, five years, is it? -Yeah. | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
And for their tough work, they needed tough vehicles. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
So they set their sights on one of the industry's | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
favourite pick-up trucks - | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
the Ford Ranger. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:30
Very spacious, we carry a lot of tools in the back. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
We also use it for towing our plant, small machines, around as well. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:39
And just weekends away with family, | 0:16:39 | 0:16:41
they're perfect for us, to be honest. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
Two years ago, the entrepreneurial duo bit the bullet and leased | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
two Ford Rangers on non-maintenance business leases. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:53
At first, they were ideal. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:54
But last year, John's pick-up developed a problem - | 0:16:56 | 0:17:00
the engine kept cutting out. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
Approaching a set of traffic lights down in Swansea, | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
and the car just cut out. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:07
First time it's ever happened to me. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:08
Coming towards traffic lights, the car in front of me. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:12
-You've got your family in the car, your parents in the car. -Yeah. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:14
Driving towards the traffic light and then, suddenly, nothing. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:19
It must have been scary. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
What goes through your mind when that happens? | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
Just panic, to be honest. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:25
If it was ten yards in front, anything could have happened. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:29
At first, John assumed it was just a one-off. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
The but before long, it was happening almost every time | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
he got in his pick-up truck. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
The partners had signed non-maintained car leases | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
with Lex Autolease. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:42
So with no replacement pick-up on offer, John took his Ranger | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
to his local Ford dealer, Evans Halshaw in Treforest, | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
to see if it could be repaired under his Ford warranty. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:53
After two weeks, the car was returned to me saying | 0:17:53 | 0:17:55
they couldn't find a fault. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
And then it just got more persistent. | 0:17:57 | 0:17:59
Every morning, it'd start for a bit, but it will do it as well, | 0:17:59 | 0:18:03
just driving along, midday, in the evening, it will stop. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
And, as with so much in life, John wasn't facing this problem alone. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:14
Shockingly, Rob says the engine in his Ford Ranger | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
also starting cutting out unexpectedly. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
You lose almost all of your steering. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:23
There's no power steering. You're not in control. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
You've got no brakes. It's dangerous. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
John says he's brought his car in here, to Evans Halshaw, five times. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:34
And each time, they told him the car was absolutely fine. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:38
Rob says he's brought it in four times, | 0:18:38 | 0:18:40
and once they did find an engine fault. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
They told him it was fixed, but for both of the guys, | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
the problems still continue. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:48
We asked vehicle safety examiner Gareth to try and detect the fault. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:54
So, we've got quite a lot of sharp turns there. | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
I know that's sometimes when John has a problem with it. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
-How were those turns? -Yeah, fine. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
This seems quite responsive. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
It's operating as I'd expect it to. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
There's a lot of oncoming traffic, | 0:19:10 | 0:19:12
so this would be quite a worrying time for it to cut out. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
It certainly would. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:16
It would be quite concerning, that would, wouldn't it? | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
But after a hour's driving, the intermittent problem with | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
the engine just hasn't happened. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:24
Nevertheless, Gareth is still very concerned. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:27
You've reported a number of incidents where this vehicle has | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
just been losing its power. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
So that's dangerous, because when it's stopping suddenly, | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
you're not putting your foot on the brake, | 0:19:39 | 0:19:40
hence there's no brake lights, anybody coming behind you, | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
they're not getting any warning whatsoever, so there's the chance | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
of a collision from behind. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
With the loss of power steering and the foot brake, | 0:19:49 | 0:19:52
obviously, negotiating corners and roundabouts, that's dangerous. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:56
With Evans Halshaw seemingly unable to find a fault, | 0:19:57 | 0:20:02
Gareth recommends that the partners ask Lex Autolease | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
for an extended road test. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
That will allow an expert more time to experience the fault. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:11
For Rob and John, that seems the best solution. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
We can't do our job without these cars. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:19
We just keep getting them back, getting them back, | 0:20:19 | 0:20:21
and they're not right. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:23
Well, a very unhappy situation all round. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
Ford told us that Evans Halshaw tried to replicate the faults | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
unsuccessfully on four separate occasions. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
One of the cars should have been tested by the | 0:20:35 | 0:20:37
national technical team, | 0:20:37 | 0:20:39
but as it wasn't delivered to the garage, that didn't happen. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:42
Ford also say that in future, they're happy for John and Rob | 0:20:42 | 0:20:46
to take their cars to a different Ford dealership. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:50
And Lex Autolease, well, they point out that | 0:20:50 | 0:20:53
their lease agreement didn't include maintenance, servicing or repairs, | 0:20:53 | 0:20:57
but they've arranged for both vehicles to be assessed | 0:20:57 | 0:21:00
by an independent expert. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:02
Now, back to our investigation into hairdressers prepared to ignore | 0:21:03 | 0:21:08
their own industry's guidelines. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:10
Sammi Ford knows only too well what can happen | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
when hair dyeing goes wrong. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
She suffered a severe allergic reaction. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:21
It was really frightening, I was scared, I didn't | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
want to look in the mirror, I didn't even recognise myself. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
Manufacturers all say their hair dyes are safe to use | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
if the instructions are followed. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
Which includes carrying out a patch test. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:36
Those same manufacturers also say that hair dye is not intended | 0:21:37 | 0:21:42
for use on anyone under the age of 16. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:46
The European Commission demands this warning is put on all packaging. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:51
The hairdressers' own federation goes further, saying | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
that hair colour products should never be applied to anyone under 16. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:59
But we've discovered that some hairdressers in Wales seem only too | 0:22:01 | 0:22:05
happy to ignore the guidance. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
Imogen is 12 and loves having her hair styled. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:13
She'd also love to have it coloured, but she's too young. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:17
We took her undercover to salons across South Wales. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
Only one, Burlesque in Newport, did the right thing, | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
telling her she was too young. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
-Hi. -Hi, how are you? | 0:22:36 | 0:22:39
Shirley Davis-Fox represents Wales on the industry's professional body. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:44
So what we've done is sent a 12-year-old | 0:22:45 | 0:22:47
into various salons asking to get their hair dyed. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:52
So it will be very interesting to see what you think of this. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
-12 years of age? -Yeah, 12. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:57
At this salon in Pontypridd, there's encouragement. | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
So, very clearly stated that she's 12. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
That she's 12. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:23
She should have said, "No, I'm really sorry." | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
Right, I don't know what you're going to make | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
of the rest of this then. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:28
Next, Kadji in Cardiff. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
They seem mainly concerned about the cost. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
Now, what's interesting about that is she is almost, | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
the fact that she's a schoolgirl is a benefit here | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
because she's going to get a discount. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:06
That's appalling. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:07
She is a schoolgirl, she does not look 16. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:11
In fact, she doesn't even look 14. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
A patch test on the spot was offered by Glam in Pontypridd, | 0:24:15 | 0:24:19
but that's only appropriate for an adult client. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
Space in Newport were also concerned | 0:24:32 | 0:24:34
about what kind of colour Imogen wanted. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
Elbow Room in Newport were keen to offer our schoolgirl | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
an affordable option. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
And Pebbles in Cardiff were willing to book the appointment too. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
That is awful. That is absolutely appalling. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:30
And at a branch of LaZarou in Pontypridd, | 0:25:32 | 0:25:36
the staff clearly realise she's a child. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:40
That's not true. That is absolutely not true. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:06
Nobody, no-one can guarantee | 0:26:06 | 0:26:10
that a lowlight chemical will not touch the scalp. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:15
Are you all right? | 0:26:15 | 0:26:16
I feel like this is like red rag to a bull right now. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
Well, it is. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
Everybody, within the industry, | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
is trying to professionalise the industry. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
And here we have salons that are actually contemplating colouring - | 0:26:26 | 0:26:33
doesn't matter whether it's highlights or lowlights - | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
colouring a young person's hair. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:38
No. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:40 | |
If they did something with this young girl | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
and she had an anaphylactic shock, | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
she could die. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:48
That's how serious it is. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
Well, not all the hairdressers we featured were willing to comment, | 0:26:52 | 0:26:56
but the Hair Centre has apologised and say they've arranged | 0:26:56 | 0:27:00
further staff training. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:02
Glam was the only salon that wanted to carry out | 0:27:02 | 0:27:04
a patch test on the spot. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:07
However, they say they would still be willing to colour | 0:27:07 | 0:27:09
our tester's hair, because the highlights she wanted | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
wouldn't have touched the scalp. | 0:27:12 | 0:27:15
Pebbles admit they should have checked our tester's age. | 0:27:15 | 0:27:19
But say they'll now improve procedures | 0:27:19 | 0:27:22
to avoid errors in future. | 0:27:22 | 0:27:24
And LaZarou in Pontypridd acknowledge they made a mistake. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:28
They say they have strict policies in place and will now put further | 0:27:28 | 0:27:32
policies and staff training into action | 0:27:32 | 0:27:35
to stop this ever happening again. | 0:27:35 | 0:27:38
Well, that's all we've got time for this week. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:41
Next week - the boiler left in pieces | 0:27:41 | 0:27:43
and the mum left out of pocket by a plumber. | 0:27:43 | 0:27:46
I felt really stupid for trusting him and giving him that money. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:51
The whole thing has been really upsetting. | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
And if you'd like us to investigate a tradesman, | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
a company that's let you down or an issue that gets you | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
hot under the collar, get in touch. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:02
The number to call is... | 0:28:02 | 0:28:03
Or you can e-mail... | 0:28:07 | 0:28:08
We would love to hear from you. | 0:28:10 | 0:28:12
See you next week, bye-bye. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:14 |
