On today's Crimewatch Roadshow. A jogger suffers a terrifying ordeal | :00:10. | :00:14.
when she is followed, and then assaulted by a stranger. Can you | :00:14. | :00:24.
:00:24. | :00:37. | ||
help us to track down the attacker Good morning, and welcome to the | :00:37. | :00:40.
last programme in this year's series of Crimewatch Roadshow. Over | :00:40. | :00:43.
the last four weeks, your calls have provided some incredibly | :00:43. | :00:47.
strong leads. But we still need your help with today's appeals. | :00:47. | :00:51.
Coming up: Silver ingots and cash stolen from a family's house, after | :00:51. | :00:56.
four men posed as police officers, and tied up their victims. | :00:56. | :00:59.
CCTV footage of what appears to be a builder getting kitted up for | :00:59. | :01:07.
work. What's he really up to? Plus: It's an early morning wake up | :01:07. | :01:11.
call for some of Cardiff's suspected criminals. | :01:11. | :01:14.
All month we've been broadcasting live from the BBC studios here in | :01:14. | :01:21.
Cardiff. This week, we've been working with South Wales Police. | :01:21. | :01:25.
Miriam O'Reilly is not that far away from me now. She's in the | :01:25. | :01:28.
heart of the city. It looks pretty green there, Miriam. Are you really | :01:28. | :01:35.
in the city centre? Yes, Rav. We're in Bute Park. In | :01:35. | :01:45.
:01:45. | :01:45. | ||
the shadow of Cardiff Castle. And behind us you can see the clock | :01:45. | :01:55.
:01:55. | :01:56. | ||
tower. With me is Louise Elliott from BBC Wales. | :01:56. | :02:00.
Morning. Later we'll be finding out more about the contents of this | :02:00. | :02:04.
boot. It's an armoury on wheels. It has been a really peaceful morning | :02:04. | :02:08.
here in the centre of the city. But later on, I'll be introducing you | :02:08. | :02:12.
to the armed response unit for South Wales, who have to deal with | :02:12. | :02:15.
potentially deadly situations. Let's get onto our first appeal. | :02:15. | :02:18.
Running through the park here is the Taff Trail, the scene of a | :02:18. | :02:28.
horrific attack in April this year. I felt pretty OK. And the next | :02:28. | :02:32.
thing I know is somebody's grabbing me, and had his other arm around my | :02:32. | :02:35.
chest. In my ten-year career, I certainly | :02:35. | :02:37.
haven't heard of anything like this happening before. | :02:37. | :02:40.
If he's done it in broad daylight, he'll do it again. | :02:40. | :02:49.
Running the length of Cardiff's main river, the Taff Trail is | :02:49. | :02:55.
popular with joggers, like Christine Weaver. But in April this | :02:55. | :03:00.
year, she became the victim of a terrifying attack in broad daylight. | :03:00. | :03:04.
I just drove back from work, parked my car, and went for a run along | :03:04. | :03:08.
the Taff Trail. I go there a couple of times a week, and just do | :03:08. | :03:10.
different runs just to keep fit really. | :03:10. | :03:13.
Like many others, Christine usually runs with her headphones in, and | :03:14. | :03:18.
her favourite music on. And they say don't run with your | :03:18. | :03:22.
iPod in. Don't run alone, run with your phone I ran my normal route, | :03:22. | :03:25.
which is actually alongside the river past the schools towards | :03:25. | :03:27.
Whitchurch. And then I always run through | :03:27. | :03:35.
But, just a few hundred yards into her run, she had a strange | :03:35. | :03:40.
encounter. Someone tried to stop her, but Christine ignored him and | :03:40. | :03:47.
ran on. Just as I was running along the | :03:47. | :03:50.
footpath, I noticed there was someone running about 20 metres | :03:50. | :03:54.
behind me. And a little bit odd, just in what he was dressed in. And | :03:54. | :03:59.
how he was running at a speed that was similar to me. But he was in | :03:59. | :04:02.
normal, casual clothing not running clothing. I didn't think too much | :04:02. | :04:06.
of it at that point. But the harassment was far from | :04:06. | :04:10.
over. Further up the road, the man tried to stop her again. | :04:10. | :04:14.
He was gesturing to take my iPod out, which I didn't do. And to slow | :04:14. | :04:18.
down. I didn't talk to him, I just raised my hand and carried on | :04:18. | :04:23.
running. His behaviour was just unusual | :04:23. | :04:28.
really, and he was persistent. That's when I started to worry, I | :04:28. | :04:33.
thought, why don't you just go away and leave me alone? And he wasn't. | :04:33. | :04:38.
And that's when I started to feel a little uneasy. | :04:38. | :04:45.
Christine was picked up by CCTV running through a housing estate. | :04:45. | :04:55.
:04:55. | :04:56. | ||
Just 14 seconds. And later, the same camera recorded her pursuer. | :04:56. | :04:59.
Detective Constable Emyr Evans is leading the investigation. | :04:59. | :05:04.
The person is described as a white male. He had a tanned complexion, | :05:04. | :05:10.
around 22 to 23 years. Slim build, maybe eight and a half stone. He | :05:10. | :05:14.
was around five feet six, to five feet eight tall. He had wavy dark | :05:14. | :05:20.
brown hair. He was actually wearing denim jeans and he also had a | :05:20. | :05:24.
rucksack on him. Quite distinctive. It was like an S-type pattern to it, | :05:24. | :05:28.
on the main body of the rucksack. The path she was running left the | :05:28. | :05:34.
residential area and became more Christine suddenly found herself | :05:34. | :05:41.
alone. Or so she thought. I did check behind, and he wasn't | :05:41. | :05:46.
there, he'd gone. So I felt reassured with myself that my plan | :05:46. | :05:50.
that had been OK. And I just carried on at my normal speed. I | :05:50. | :05:53.
didn't slow down, I just kept going at the same speed. | :05:53. | :05:56.
With her headphones in, Christine was unaware of the danger behind | :05:56. | :06:06.
her. The next thing I know, I couldn't think straight. And I | :06:06. | :06:14.
Christine was attacked in broad daylight. Later in the programme, | :06:14. | :06:17.
we'll be bringing you more information that could help catch | :06:17. | :06:24.
the man who did it. For now, back Today's Wanted Faces are a | :06:24. | :06:27.
collection of suspects we've featured throughout this series. | :06:27. | :06:30.
They're faces you've given us good information on so far, but we need | :06:30. | :06:34.
more. Muhammad Asif Habib. He's been | :06:34. | :06:39.
wanted by police since July 2010. He was arrested and charged with | :06:39. | :06:42.
money laundering offences. But while on bail, he went on the run | :06:42. | :06:46.
and didn't turn up in court. He was sentenced to three years in his | :06:46. | :06:49.
absence. Habib's known to have contacts in the Manchester area and | :06:49. | :06:53.
has a Pakistani accent. Do you know where he is now? Give us a call. | :06:53. | :06:56.
This man, Eskander Kwareem, has generated some strong calls from | :06:56. | :07:00.
you. He's wanted in connection with a rape in the Kidderminster area in | :07:00. | :07:03.
January 2007. Originally from Iraq, he's lived in the UK since 2003, | :07:03. | :07:07.
and he has links to the London and Leeds areas. Have you seen him | :07:07. | :07:13.
recently? If so, please let us know. Please take a close look at this | :07:13. | :07:16.
man: Karl Michael O'Hare. Back in 2002, he was charged with murder | :07:16. | :07:20.
and attempted murder, but failed to attend court. He has a Liverpudlian | :07:20. | :07:23.
accent, and usually has a moustache covering a large scar on his upper | :07:23. | :07:27.
lip. He's known to have been in the Merseyside area, but do you know | :07:27. | :07:32.
where he is now? Do you recognise this man, Ronald | :07:32. | :07:36.
Brian Grimes? He was convicted of robbery and assault in May 2004 and | :07:36. | :07:39.
jailed for seven and a half years. He was released early on licence, | :07:39. | :07:43.
but failed to keep to his conditions, and is now wanted back | :07:43. | :07:46.
in jail. Grimes has a Liverpudlian accent, and scars on his left arm. | :07:46. | :07:50.
He also has Chinese letter tattoos on both arms. Have you seen him | :07:50. | :07:54.
recently? If so, please let us know. If you recognise any of these faces, | :07:54. | :07:58.
the number to call is: 08000 468 999. Or text us on 63399. Text CW, | :07:58. | :08:01.
space, and then your message. Please, leave the space or your | :08:01. | :08:03.
message won't get through. Or, email us. [email protected]. | :08:04. | :08:07.
Don't forget, all the Wanted Faces from the series are on our website. | :08:07. | :08:11.
Now over to Louise. We've met a lot of police officers | :08:11. | :08:18.
during the series. But let me introduce you now to the sergeant | :08:18. | :08:21.
we've been calling the Man Mountain: Mark Williams. Standing | :08:21. | :08:25.
six feet five tall, it's been suggested to us that he doesn't | :08:25. | :08:28.
actually need a battering ram when forcing his way through suspects' | :08:28. | :08:38.
:08:38. | :09:10. | ||
I'm here with Cardiff's newest police unit. They're called the | :09:10. | :09:13.
Priority Policing Team. These guys just started work yesterday, but | :09:13. | :09:23.
:09:23. | :09:28. | ||
they're determined to kick off with Sergeant Mark Williams is driving | :09:28. | :09:32.
us to the first location, tell us a bit about what we're going to find | :09:32. | :09:37.
there? Intelligence says the occupant is dealing heroin and | :09:37. | :09:42.
crack cocaine. So obviously we're going to force entry to the | :09:42. | :09:45.
property. Secure all the persons at the address. And then conduct a | :09:45. | :09:55.
:09:55. | :10:08. | ||
We've conducted a quick search of the address. There's one male | :10:08. | :10:12.
occupant, the target of our warrant. He was upstairs in bed, so we've | :10:12. | :10:15.
got a bit of a result there. you're searching the property. What | :10:15. | :10:18.
are you looking for? We're searching for controlled drugs, | :10:18. | :10:28.
:10:28. | :10:29. | ||
specifically your heroin, and your We're lifting up the floorboards. | :10:29. | :10:33.
This floorboard was loose. A lot of the time, dealers will hide drugs, | :10:33. | :10:36.
contraband, cash under the floorboard. So, anything that looks | :10:36. | :10:46.
:10:46. | :10:48. | ||
The team hit three homes that morning. The searches are | :10:48. | :10:55.
Criminals often try to outsmart the police with their choice of hiding | :10:55. | :11:02.
You've probably seen me looking on the top of doors. A lot of people | :11:02. | :11:06.
slide things down the top of the doors. A lot of people hide things | :11:06. | :11:10.
behind light switches. There's a lot of hiding places. As you know, | :11:10. | :11:14.
in any house you can hide something. So we've got to try and get into | :11:14. | :11:17.
the mindset of people, and find where would they be hiding their | :11:17. | :11:27.
There we go. Bags for cannabis. Cannabis leaf on the bag, so it | :11:27. | :11:34.
gives it away, doesn't it? They're all empty, are they? Yeah. | :11:34. | :11:40.
Strange thing to stash in a bin bag, isn't it? Is there anything you can | :11:40. | :11:43.
do about the knives when you find something like that? Absolutely | :11:43. | :11:46.
nothing when it's in their home address. Out on the street, you're | :11:46. | :11:49.
looking at offences: offensive weapon, bladed article. But lots of | :11:49. | :11:52.
people have these samurai swords and other type of knives as | :11:52. | :11:56.
ornaments in their homes. As long as they're not using them for any | :11:56. | :11:58.
illegal purpose, there's very little we can do. | :11:58. | :12:01.
Despite all the intelligence and planning, raids don't always result | :12:01. | :12:04.
in a find. What kind of volume of stuff were | :12:04. | :12:08.
you expecting to find here today? Are you looking for something, just | :12:08. | :12:11.
a small amount? Or did you think there might be something more | :12:11. | :12:14.
substantial? You can come in and find 10 worth | :12:14. | :12:18.
of heroin. Or you can find 10,000 worth. If you think of the size of | :12:18. | :12:21.
my fist, that'd be thousands of pounds worth of drugs, so you could | :12:22. | :12:27.
hide that anywhere. We know when people are doing something or we | :12:27. | :12:30.
believe they're doing something. But we don't always catch them. We | :12:30. | :12:34.
may have to hit their address 20, 30 times over the space of a year | :12:34. | :12:37.
before we actually get lucky. So the message from Sergeant Mark | :12:37. | :12:41.
Williams is: his team is very much on the case. The word's out there | :12:41. | :12:45.
that we're out there on the streets. We've had nine arrests in total. A | :12:45. | :12:48.
lot of them for offences where they've been outstanding, evading | :12:48. | :12:54.
capture from the police for two, three months in total. | :12:54. | :13:04.
:13:04. | :13:07. | ||
Sergeant Mark Williams. This is a new team, you have only been | :13:07. | :13:11.
operating for a matter of weeks. Have you been out on any more raids | :13:11. | :13:19.
since then? As part of South Wales Police, we are there to respond to | :13:19. | :13:26.
the needs of our community. We have had 68 arrests for burglary, theft, | :13:26. | :13:32.
drugs-related matters, people who have failed to attend before court. | :13:32. | :13:38.
68 in a matter of weeks. Is the message getting out to criminals | :13:38. | :13:41.
that this team is in operation and you mean business? We are there to | :13:41. | :13:47.
meet the needs of the communities, dealing with intelligence from the | :13:47. | :13:51.
communities and executing warrants based on that, to tackle anti- | :13:51. | :13:58.
social behaviour. Looking out crime trends, taking up patrols to meet | :13:58. | :14:05.
those needs. You mentioned you would raid somebody's home 20 times, | :14:05. | :14:10.
isn't that excessive? We respond to information from the communities | :14:10. | :14:16.
and if the need is there, we will react to it. Successful so far, we | :14:16. | :14:20.
are there to tackle people involved in crime and anti-social behaviour. | :14:20. | :14:30.
:14:30. | :14:32. | ||
If the information is there, we Still to come: Silver ingots and | :14:32. | :14:39.
cash stolen in an audacious heist. Plus a horrifying moment when a job | :14:39. | :14:44.
by the river turned into a violent nightmare. And your calls have put | :14:44. | :14:49.
a rapist back behind bars and led to the arrest of a former police | :14:49. | :14:54.
officer in connection with a scam. We look at how your information has | :14:54. | :14:57.
helped make a difference in the series. | :14:57. | :15:02.
Take a look at this man. Any idea what is going through his brain? | :15:02. | :15:06.
This is the moment the criminal realises he has been caught on | :15:06. | :15:12.
camera. It happened on 30th April in central London. You can tell us | :15:12. | :15:18.
more. What is happening here? man has just made of it from an | :15:18. | :15:24.
armed robbery. This is after the incident and he has seen a camera. | :15:24. | :15:30.
We can see what happened before this. You can see there is a gun | :15:30. | :15:35.
down the back of his trousers. He is putting on a builder's outfit. | :15:35. | :15:41.
We can see him getting dressed and kitting up with the staff. He puts | :15:41. | :15:46.
on a rubber mask as well. We can see that going on right now to try | :15:46. | :15:54.
and conceal his identity. He puts a hard hat on as well. Have another | :15:54. | :15:58.
look at that fire are poking out of the back of his jeans. What happens | :15:58. | :16:04.
next? When he leaves the choppy runs back into the alleyway and | :16:04. | :16:09.
discards his disguise and takes his mask of, but he does so straight | :16:09. | :16:14.
into the camera. As this person leaves the alleyway he goes into a | :16:14. | :16:20.
dance shop and terrorises the staff. What happened inside? There were | :16:20. | :16:24.
three young, female members of staff and this man goes in armed | :16:24. | :16:27.
with a handgun and he threatens all the members of the staff and he | :16:27. | :16:32.
punches one of them before stealing 300 from the till. He cannot | :16:32. | :16:37.
believe that level of violence for 300 quid. What is happening here? | :16:37. | :16:42.
He is throwing his helmet away and he drops his reflective jackets. He | :16:42. | :16:48.
has taken his mask up -- off and he looks up into the camera. Been no, | :16:48. | :16:52.
we get a lovely shot of his face and hopefully someone will | :16:52. | :16:57.
recognise him. Sadly you do not think this is the first time he has | :16:57. | :17:03.
done this? No, in May, 2007, a very similar event occurred at another | :17:03. | :17:07.
dance shop further down the road and we think it is the same man. | :17:07. | :17:14.
And a similar amount? 300. level of violence is unbelievable | :17:14. | :17:24.
:17:24. | :17:26. | ||
for 300 quid. If you can help, callers or text us. Leave the space | :17:26. | :17:31.
or your message will not get through in the text. | :17:31. | :17:36.
Yesterday, we showed you a vicious attack in a shop in east India Dock | :17:36. | :17:41.
Road in London. Three men chased their victim into the shop before | :17:41. | :17:45.
brutally assaulting him. One of our viewers has called in with a | :17:45. | :17:52.
possible name. We showed you this of a burglar caught on camera in | :17:52. | :17:55.
fits Rabia Art Gallery in London. The callers have passed as an aim | :17:55. | :18:00.
which police are looking into right now. And we have had a call on Lee | :18:00. | :18:03.
Wescott. Police are keen to speak to have no connection with a | :18:03. | :18:08.
robbery in July last year. Our appeal for information on this | :18:08. | :18:12.
conman has provoked the biggest result. Thank you to everyone who | :18:12. | :18:17.
has got in touch. Not many of us have seen one of | :18:17. | :18:23.
these because it is very unusual. It is a silver ingot and is worth | :18:23. | :18:28.
about 600. Last week, six of these were stolen from a family by a con | :18:28. | :18:36.
gang posing as police officers. It happened 20 miles north of Cardiff. | :18:37. | :18:43.
It unfolded in Albany Street on 20th June at 7:30am. That date and | :18:43. | :18:48.
time is significant, isn't it? Someone may have seen the gang | :18:48. | :18:54.
putting on gloves like the one you are wearing. It was 7:30am a week | :18:54. | :18:58.
ago on Monday. Four men who were smartly-dressed, casually walked | :18:58. | :19:03.
along Albany Street and conned their way into the premises. They | :19:03. | :19:07.
were wearing blue, rubber gloves like the one I am wearing now. | :19:07. | :19:12.
did they say to the householder? They said they were police officers | :19:12. | :19:16.
and said they had a warrant to search the premises. But they also | :19:16. | :19:22.
tied some of the family members up. They used cable ties to tie their | :19:22. | :19:25.
wrists and so convincing were they that the family allowed them to do | :19:25. | :19:31.
that. We have an image of the leader of the gang. Describe him. | :19:31. | :19:37.
He is a very smartly dressed man. He was wearing a suit and tie. He | :19:37. | :19:42.
is 40-42 years of age and is athletically built. Have you ever | :19:42. | :19:48.
come across a con like this before? This is a rare crime in this area. | :19:48. | :19:53.
Allard amount of money was stolen. The family's life savings. | :19:53. | :19:57.
Absolutely and significantly the silver in Gotts. They are very | :19:57. | :20:02.
difficult to sell on. Some of them had certificates. You think that | :20:02. | :20:07.
these men might have been local. Does that men they will try and | :20:07. | :20:12.
sell them locally? This is a very well planned and organised crime. I | :20:12. | :20:15.
think they will try and sell them locally, they may be bragging about | :20:15. | :20:21.
them. There may be a jeweller who has offered them something or has | :20:21. | :20:25.
heard them being talked about. There is lots of detail on them as | :20:25. | :20:35.
well. Absolutely. They are the size of an average mobile telephone. | :20:35. | :20:39.
They should have a certificate if they are going to be sold on. | :20:39. | :20:45.
you very much. If you know anything, get in touch. Back to the studio. | :20:45. | :20:50.
After we come off air, our phone lines will be open for the rest of | :20:50. | :20:53.
the week and you can call Crimestoppers any time if you want | :20:53. | :20:59.
to remain anonymous. We thought we would let you have a look at the | :20:59. | :21:08.
work they do. Hello, Crimestoppers. It is anonymous. When will you be | :21:08. | :21:14.
driving again? We do not know their names and addresses, we do not want | :21:14. | :21:18.
them to be witnesses. Essentially, who has committed the crime, tell | :21:18. | :21:24.
us. 1985 and riots on the Broadwater Farm Estate in London | :21:24. | :21:27.
and Police Constable Keith Blakelock is brutally murdered. It | :21:27. | :21:32.
was this moment that sparked the creation of Crimestoppers. I was | :21:32. | :21:38.
horrified by that murder and I rang the Commissioner of Police, Ken | :21:38. | :21:42.
Newman, to offer an anonymous reward for the capture of the man | :21:42. | :21:49.
who perpetrated that crime. Since then, the organisation has grown to | :21:49. | :21:54.
be a nationwide service, but it only employs 80 staff. The rest of | :21:54. | :22:00.
the work is done by volunteers. is usually after an awful crime has | :22:00. | :22:06.
been committed and an appeal goes out on Crimewatch or the press and | :22:06. | :22:10.
then the public, fantastic as they are, will bring into us and trust | :22:10. | :22:16.
us with the information and we will solve the crime. In 23 years no | :22:16. | :22:20.
call a's identity has been revealed, but there was one significant | :22:20. | :22:25.
moments when a caller wait her anonymity. A railway worker was | :22:25. | :22:30.
given seven life sentences. He was found guilty of a series of vicious | :22:31. | :22:35.
attacks on women and girls. Anthony Imelia, was convicted of seven | :22:35. | :22:40.
rapes and was described as a ruthless, sexual predator. | :22:40. | :22:48.
anonymous call led officers to his home in a neighbouring village. | :22:48. | :22:52.
Over 350 officers were involved and thousands of men had given their | :22:52. | :22:57.
DNA sample, yet that one, a simple telephone call brought the inquiry | :22:57. | :23:04.
to an end. I think the information has been passed on to the police. | :23:04. | :23:08.
Calls to the charity not only help to solve crimes, they are being | :23:08. | :23:14.
used to prevent them happening in the first place. I have been very | :23:14. | :23:17.
privileged and tumbles to meet the parents of victims of crime, | :23:17. | :23:21.
particularly parents who have lost youngsters through senseless | :23:21. | :23:25.
violence. It is humbling to meet them. Anything we can do that | :23:25. | :23:35.
:23:35. | :23:36. | ||
prevents those crimes recurring is fantastic. Over 100,000 people have | :23:36. | :23:42.
been arrested. Our daily average now is 23 people arrested every day | :23:42. | :23:46.
as a result of information coming from Crimestoppers to the police | :23:46. | :23:50.
service. We all want a better society, safe streets. We know the | :23:50. | :23:56.
police cannot do it on their own. With the public's help it makes | :23:56. | :24:06.
:24:06. | :24:06. | ||
such a difference. This is the all- important number. Time to cast your | :24:06. | :24:16.
:24:16. | :24:18. | ||
eye over some more CCTV. Here is a man who is desperate to get back | :24:18. | :24:24.
into school, but I do not think it is to improve his education. He is | :24:24. | :24:28.
breaking into a school in Harrow this year. He tries and tries again, | :24:28. | :24:33.
but no amount of brute force works and he is eventually forced to give | :24:33. | :24:38.
up, not before giving us some great pictures of his face. Can you help | :24:38. | :24:48.
us catch this bungling burglar? Give us his name, please. How is | :24:48. | :24:57.
this for the perfect picture? October, 2010, and these two are | :24:57. | :25:01.
shopping for cameras in a store in Kent. They are even consulting a | :25:01. | :25:05.
magazine as they browse, but they have got no intention of paying. It | :25:05. | :25:10.
takes them seconds to cut the security cables and make off with | :25:10. | :25:15.
two cameras. They have been caught on camera, now, let's snap them up | :25:15. | :25:21.
for the police. Names, please. This is July last year and this man is | :25:21. | :25:30.
doing a spot of shopping in Macclesfield. He plays with a | :25:30. | :25:38.
telephone on display. He spends a hall five minutes playing with it. | :25:38. | :25:41.
Eventually we see what he is up to. He freeze the telephone from the | :25:42. | :25:51.
:25:52. | :25:57. | ||
display and next it. Please, give Please, leave that space, or your | :25:57. | :26:05.
message will not get through. Now, back to Louise. | :26:05. | :26:09.
In the last few days in South Wales we have met the specialist diving | :26:09. | :26:14.
team, yesterday we were with their helicopters, and today it is the | :26:14. | :26:20.
armed response unit. Hello to inspector Steve Morris. Thank you | :26:20. | :26:24.
for bringing the vehicle and the weapons. What kind of incidents do | :26:24. | :26:31.
you get called out to? Thankfully, in South Wales we do not get a lot | :26:31. | :26:35.
of problems with knife crime and gun crime, but to keep the | :26:35. | :26:40.
community say, should we get called to an incident, we have got a team | :26:40. | :26:45.
of specially trained officers and we respond to those incidents. If | :26:45. | :26:52.
members of the community are alarmed or distressed, a threat | :26:52. | :26:56.
assessment is carried out to ensure we get the right resources in the | :26:56. | :27:02.
right place at the right time. carry these every day. Are they all | :27:02. | :27:12.
:27:12. | :27:13. | ||
lethal? No, they are not all lethal. What we have got is a Taser gun. | :27:13. | :27:22.
That will be the first weapon that the officer would use. Next is the | :27:22. | :27:27.
second choice. Then you have got the handgun, which would be another | :27:27. | :27:35.
choice. Then this is the final choice. I know this is the real | :27:35. | :27:41.
thing. This is an imitation. I have an untrained eye, I cannot tell the | :27:41. | :27:45.
difference. From a distance, could you officers tell the difference? | :27:45. | :27:50.
No, they could not. It is very difficult and in a high-pressure | :27:50. | :27:54.
incident, the officers have to make a split-second decision to say | :27:54. | :27:58.
whether that is a real weapon and it is a very difficult position to | :27:58. | :28:03.
be in. Some of the other equipment, you have got Helmut, are they used | :28:03. | :28:09.
all the time? Yes, the ballistic Helmut the officers used all the | :28:09. | :28:15.
time and the shield. By Duberry much, really interesting looking | :28:15. | :28:21.
three days. Over to you, Marian. Earlier we told you about a vicious | :28:21. | :28:26.
attack on a jogger who was using the Taff Trail, which runs through | :28:26. | :28:30.
this part. Here is what happened next. | :28:30. | :28:35.
Running along Cardiff's popular Taff Trail in April Christine | :28:35. | :28:40.
Weaver it endured a terrifying Christine was listening to music | :28:40. | :28:50.
:28:50. | :28:51. | ||
while out for a run, when she was She ignored him and kept running. | :28:51. | :28:56.
didn't think too much of it at that point. But, with her headphones in, | :28:56. | :28:59.
she was caught completely off guard when, almost two miles further down | :28:59. | :29:04.
the path, the same man attacked her. The next thing I know is someone's | :29:04. | :29:13.
I remember thinking, well, I'm taller than him. I'm still trying | :29:13. | :29:17.
to move so stay upright. Don't try and hit the ground, because then | :29:17. | :29:27.
:29:27. | :29:36. | ||
He let my arms go he ran off back Her attacker fled, just as a | :29:36. | :29:42.
cyclist was approaching. I saw this person running towards me. He | :29:43. | :29:47.
didn't seem right, he didn't seem like a jogger type. He didn't seem | :29:47. | :29:51.
like someone who'd be on the Taff Trail. He mumbled something about a | :29:51. | :29:56.
girl or a woman, or bits and pieces. And then as I cycled up just | :29:56. | :30:00.
another little bit past it. I obviously came across a woman who | :30:00. | :30:04.
was in a very distressed condition. I didn't think I was going to die, | :30:04. | :30:08.
because the police asked me that. I said, no, because, if he wanted to | :30:08. | :30:12.
kill me, he could've just done it then. But I just thought, | :30:12. | :30:15.
whatever's going to happen is going to happen. But you know, I couldn't | :30:15. | :30:20.
think straight. And I thought, just scared really. I knew I was in | :30:20. | :30:24.
trouble. And if they hadn't come along, those cyclists I feel | :30:24. | :30:30.
relieved nothing more serious happened. And I feel slightly naive | :30:30. | :30:34.
that actually I kind of knew I was in trouble, but maybe I made the | :30:34. | :30:39.
wrong decisions earlier in my run. Perhaps I should've stopped, | :30:39. | :30:45.
knocked on somebody's door. Or maybe I should've taken my iPod out, | :30:45. | :30:48.
and just made myself a little bit safer. | :30:48. | :30:53.
DC Emyr Evans knows the attack could've been a lot worse. | :30:53. | :30:57.
Christine is athletic. She was able to fend of this individual. Another | :30:57. | :31:00.
person, should this happen again, may not be so lucky. This | :31:00. | :31:04.
particular area of Cardiff is very, very safe. In my whole career, I | :31:04. | :31:07.
have never known an attack of this nature before. We are very keen to | :31:07. | :31:10.
get this individual and to bring him to justice. | :31:10. | :31:14.
Lots of people go running with their iPods in. And if anybody else | :31:14. | :31:18.
just sees this. I always thought I would hear people approaching me, | :31:18. | :31:23.
but actually I didn't. And I run a lot with my iPod in, and so it is a | :31:23. | :31:27.
risk that we're taking. But I think that I'm not the only one who's | :31:27. | :31:29.
doing it. He's done it in broad daylight and | :31:29. | :31:33.
he'll do it again. And people just have to beware and vigilant. | :31:33. | :31:36.
He had malicious intent that day. I wouldn't like anyone else to go | :31:36. | :31:40.
through that. And, in a way, he's taken away some of my liberty | :31:40. | :31:45.
because I would like to feel I can go running on any day of the week | :31:45. | :31:49.
that I want to go running on my own. But now I really won't go running | :31:49. | :31:52.
on my own, and that makes me feel a bit angry really. | :31:52. | :32:02.
:32:02. | :32:03. | ||
DC Emyr Evans is leading this investigation. This attack took | :32:03. | :32:06.
place in broad daylight with lots of people around, it was pretty | :32:06. | :32:14.
brazen. It was a determined effort by this individual. He made contact | :32:14. | :32:18.
with Christine just outside the park and followed her, even though | :32:18. | :32:24.
she had increased the pace of her running, and she is and in -- she | :32:25. | :32:30.
is an experienced runner. Do you think he is local? It is a secluded | :32:30. | :32:36.
area and he was waiting for her. seemed like he knew the area where | :32:36. | :32:40.
he wanted to attack. It is a thought that the individual had | :32:40. | :32:48.
knowledge of this Taff Trail. have CCTV, describe him? Quite | :32:48. | :32:54.
distinctively, he was wearing a backpack. I haven't come across one | :32:54. | :33:03.
similar to this. The trunk of it had squiggles. And the shoulder | :33:03. | :33:13.
:33:13. | :33:17. | ||
straps were very thick. Tell us, do you have any advice for people | :33:17. | :33:25.
jogging? Be vigilant as you are running, the Taff Trail is a safe | :33:25. | :33:29.
place to be, as is Cardiff. But have awareness in front of them, | :33:29. | :33:34.
behind them, as they are running and if they see anyone suspicious, | :33:34. | :33:44.
:33:44. | :33:44. | ||
get to an area where there is public about. Now a story of a | :33:44. | :33:48.
bogus burglar alarm engineer, who was all set to rip off a Co-op | :33:48. | :33:51.
store in Halesowen near Birmingham, only for a genuine alarm engineer | :33:51. | :33:54.
to rumble his con. Andy McCabe, you're from the Co-op headquarters. | :33:54. | :33:58.
And Pearl Dean, you were working in the shop that day. Tell me what | :33:58. | :34:07.
happened? We had an intruder activation | :34:07. | :34:14.
alarmed during the night. We went to investigate, then locked up. The | :34:14. | :34:22.
following day, and individual claim to be from the alarm company. As | :34:22. | :34:26.
can instance would have it, a genuine alarm engineer happened to | :34:26. | :34:30.
call the same day and looked at a panel and it was found various | :34:30. | :34:35.
areas of the store had been isolated which would have meant any | :34:35. | :34:40.
entry would not have been detected. You were working in the shop, you | :34:40. | :34:47.
had your suspicions about this person. I was called on the shop | :34:47. | :34:53.
floor and I checked his ID. That matched. When I asked him to take | :34:53. | :34:59.
his cap off, and to remove his glasses, he wouldn't remove them. | :35:00. | :35:09.
:35:10. | :35:12. | ||
There's an image of the conman from CCTV. That is what gave you a | :35:12. | :35:15.
suspicion about this person, because he wouldn't take his | :35:15. | :35:20.
glasses and cap off. You know a lot of the Engineers. They very rarely | :35:20. | :35:30.
:35:30. | :35:33. | ||
wear hats, they always remove them if they are asked. Andy, you work | :35:33. | :35:35.
with Co-op headquarters. That attempt was thwarted because the | :35:36. | :35:39.
real engineer turned up. But this happened two months previously in | :35:39. | :35:47.
another store. Yes, in Birmingham, with a loss of 25,000. | :35:47. | :35:52.
Investigations found, again, the alarm system had been tampered with | :35:52. | :35:59.
which made various areas of the store not alarmed. They did a | :35:59. | :36:05.
really good job. Yes, they are isolated key areas of the store so | :36:05. | :36:10.
entry could be made and nobody would know. As a result, you have | :36:10. | :36:15.
done some work. Yes, we have put more procedures in place to prevent | :36:15. | :36:18.
any further events like this happening. | :36:18. | :36:22.
Let's nab him. Get in touch if you know anything at all. The numbers | :36:22. | :36:26.
are on your screen. That's almost it for this series of | :36:26. | :36:28.
Crimewatch Roadshow. We've travelled from Liverpool to Lincoln, | :36:28. | :36:32.
Wigan to Wales. Meeting police forces from across the UK, and | :36:32. | :36:42.
:36:42. | :36:42. | ||
cracking crime along the way. We are looking to enter premises | :36:42. | :36:52.
:36:52. | :36:55. | ||
dynamically. It gets a little bit noisy as it | :36:55. | :37:00.
lands. Do you understand you are under arrest? This is a tough patch | :37:00. | :37:06.
to patrol, but it is a challenge Merseyside police have risen to. | :37:06. | :37:16.
had been shown you criminals caught on camera. This isn't personal use. | :37:16. | :37:20.
There it is, the air rifle with the diver, magnificent work, very well | :37:20. | :37:29.
done. His goggles will impair your vision. As drinking would. They | :37:29. | :37:32.
certainly do. For some of the most peaceful | :37:32. | :37:42.
:37:42. | :37:56. | ||
places can still be hit by Of course, for every crime there is | :37:56. | :38:04.
a victim. When you first see all grew wardrobes and doors open, it | :38:04. | :38:14.
:38:14. | :38:18. | ||
It was a horrific attack in her own car. | :38:18. | :38:28.
:38:28. | :38:28. | ||
I am sorry. Before it happened, I was really confident, always going | :38:28. | :38:37.
out with my friends, a great social life. I was just really confident, | :38:37. | :38:41.
at a -- up I had always been a confident person. But after this | :38:41. | :38:47.
happened, I am a completely different person. | :38:47. | :38:53.
At the time, I thought, it is time I probably went into a nursing home, | :38:53. | :38:59.
that is what I felt. I do feel scared. I nearly gave up. | :39:00. | :39:06.
And we still need your help to solve these cases. Petrified, | :39:06. | :39:16.
:39:16. | :39:28. | ||
It was vicious. It is ironic nowadays to think human beings can | :39:28. | :39:34.
be found dead, and 15 years later, nobody has come forward to claim | :39:34. | :39:38.
those persons or identify them. With the money I had in my house, | :39:39. | :39:48.
:39:49. | :39:49. | ||
and they also had some church money, I was able to sort this 800 at. -- | :39:49. | :39:57.
out. Your calls really do make a difference. The sky wouldn't be | :39:57. | :40:06.
behind bars without you. People think, it doesn't matter, it is | :40:06. | :40:09.
therefore entertainment this programme. But it does change lies | :40:09. | :40:19.
:40:19. | :40:20. | ||
and helps people to move on. And still your calls are coming in. | :40:20. | :40:26.
Strong calls on the people we called the highway men. Another | :40:26. | :40:31.
viewer has called in suggesting a name for his suspect in our CCTV | :40:31. | :40:36.
yesterday, a woman attacking a passenger on a tram. | :40:36. | :40:39.
And the quality of your calls this series has been exceptional. There | :40:39. | :40:43.
are several cases we can't go into detail about for legal reasons. But | :40:43. | :40:46.
the police are acting on strong information and working towards | :40:46. | :40:49.
arrests. Thanks to your help. We've had some great news regarding some | :40:49. | :40:51.
of the suspects featured in our CCTV appeals. | :40:52. | :40:55.
One, who was caught on camera pushing a fellow passenger off a | :40:55. | :40:58.
bus, has received a caution, And two of the suspects wanted in | :40:58. | :41:02.
connection with an attack in a shop in London, have come forward and | :41:02. | :41:05.
are talking to the police. And that's before we even start talking | :41:05. | :41:09.
about the convicted rapist Tolgay Istek, on the run for four years. | :41:09. | :41:12.
He was tracked down and arrested, thanks to your calls. Former police | :41:12. | :41:15.
office Jane Aucott, wanted in connection with a fraud scam, was | :41:15. | :41:20.
arrested by officers during our second week. Plus, these two men, | :41:20. | :41:24.
wanted by police in connection with an assault in Bedford, have both | :41:24. | :41:30.
been arrested. And there's a violent disorder arrest following | :41:30. | :41:33.
our appeal for information about rioters in London. All these | :41:33. | :41:36.
suspects are now locked into the justice system, thanks to your | :41:36. | :41:39.
information. Miriam, you've had pretty busy four | :41:39. | :41:49.
:41:49. | :41:49. | ||
weeks. I have, and over the last weeks, and have been really touched | :41:49. | :41:54.
meeting those people who have been impacted by crime, to see the | :41:54. | :41:58.
affect day-to-day crime can have on people's lives and the way they | :41:58. | :42:02.
have to rebuild their lives afterwards. Also, I have been | :42:02. | :42:06.
heartened by the people who have phoned in to try to help us with | :42:06. | :42:10.
our appeals and I just want to say, thank you to everyone who has | :42:10. | :42:15.
helped catch the bad guys. Louise, our last few days in Wales have | :42:15. | :42:23.
certainly been action packed. Divers, helicopters. It would be | :42:23. | :42:26.
great if we can help to catch some of these nasty individuals, like | :42:26. | :42:33.
the man who attacked Christine in our appeal today. Thanks to you | :42:33. | :42:36.
both, and all the reporters who've joined Miriam throughout the last | :42:37. | :42:40.
four weeks. Most importantly, thanks to you at home for watching | :42:40. | :42:43.
and phoning in with information on the crimes we've featured. The | :42:43. | :42:47.
job's not done yet. You can still play a part in putting crooks where | :42:47. | :42:49.
they belong. And remember, the stories we've featured throughout | :42:49. | :42:53.
the series are on the website. While our fight against crime is | :42:53. | :42:56.
coming to a temporary end, I'll be back next week with Britain's | :42:56. | :42:59. |
