Today: The burglars who stole thousands of pounds worth of | :00:17. | :00:27.
:00:27. | :00:41. | ||
jewellery. They think they got away Hello and welcome to Crimewatch | :00:41. | :00:47.
Roadshow. We are live and we are here to get your help to catch | :00:47. | :00:51.
criminals that make our lives a misery. So, what have we got for | :00:51. | :01:01.
you today? The mounted police come keeping down crime levels in | :01:01. | :01:07.
London's West End. We want to find that thieves who targeted this | :01:07. | :01:12.
royal Doulton collection. Sandra earth turns detective to help track | :01:12. | :01:18.
down the burglars who ransacked her flat. -- Sander. The team has been | :01:18. | :01:21.
out on the road for two weeks investigating the crimes that are | :01:21. | :01:24.
happening where you are. This week we've been in the South East of | :01:24. | :01:32.
England, and today we're in London again. We have reached Covent | :01:32. | :01:38.
Garden. Despite the fact the Royal Opera has is behind me, I am not | :01:38. | :01:46.
going to sing. We will discover how mounted patrols will keep London | :01:46. | :01:53.
and visitors much safer. We will be finding out more about the work | :01:53. | :02:02.
they do later. We are joined by Alice Bhandhukravi. Just about | :02:02. | :02:07.
everyone has a mobile phone. We don't always realise how carrying | :02:07. | :02:12.
expensive gadgets can make us attempting target for crooks. We | :02:12. | :02:20.
will be looking at sophisticated tricks that thieves used. Police | :02:20. | :02:25.
need your help to find two cunning burglars who have been coming their | :02:25. | :02:30.
way into upmarket apartments in the Wandsworth area of London. I was | :02:30. | :02:38.
feeling shocked, shaky and six. These two work organised. It was | :02:38. | :02:44.
well planned. I feel violated. You do not know where they have been or | :02:44. | :02:51.
what they have done. Back to seat is the home of choice for a new | :02:51. | :02:59.
generation of young professionals. -- Battersea. On Wednesday, first | :02:59. | :03:07.
debris, Sandra went to work as usual. -- February. Two burglars | :03:07. | :03:14.
were about to pay her apartment the visit. The burglars were seen | :03:14. | :03:19.
approaching. One tried the door handle the that his gloves on. He | :03:19. | :03:26.
soon realised his mistake. -- without his gloves on. He realised | :03:26. | :03:36.
:03:36. | :03:36. | ||
his mistake and white the Prince off with his scarf. -- the prints. | :03:36. | :03:40.
The they were smartly dressed to fit in with their surroundings. | :03:40. | :03:46.
They have put a lot of thought into it. They were well organised and | :03:46. | :03:51.
planned. The suspects headed for two flats at the top of the | :03:51. | :03:59.
building. They forced entry into Sandra's flat - high up on the 6th | :03:59. | :04:04.
floor. No one suspected a thing until her husband got home from | :04:04. | :04:10.
work. When he opened the door, he was horrified. The flat was in | :04:11. | :04:17.
chaos. Richard rang Sandra to break the terrible news. I was in shock. | :04:17. | :04:24.
I was panicked this had happened. They had been through absolutely | :04:24. | :04:30.
everything in the flat. Every drawer, cupboard, box. Everything | :04:30. | :04:37.
was overturned. Nothing was left untouched. To make matters worse, | :04:37. | :04:43.
some of her most treasured possessions had disappeared. | :04:43. | :04:52.
jury was sentimental. Mainly the jury from my grandmother. -- the | :04:52. | :04:58.
jury. It was sad to you -- it was sad to lose those things. | :04:58. | :05:04.
intruders got away with more than family heirlooms. They went through | :05:04. | :05:08.
my husband's things and took his wedding ring. I had had it made for | :05:08. | :05:17.
him. It was special. In total, suspects stole over 11,000 worth | :05:17. | :05:22.
of property. I am very angry with them, thinking they can take all | :05:22. | :05:28.
these things and we can claim on insurance. The lot of the items - | :05:28. | :05:35.
sentimental items - they are not replaceable. The unwelcome visitors | :05:35. | :05:39.
were not done yet. They wanted more. Once they've finished ransacking | :05:39. | :05:46.
the flat, they moved on to the one next door. The two suspects were | :05:46. | :05:51.
brazen. They had broken into the first flat, moved on to the second | :05:51. | :05:59.
flat where they had ransacked the property. Sandra rang her neighbour, | :05:59. | :06:09.
:06:09. | :06:09. | ||
Zane, to break the bad news. It is just shock. You do not expect it. | :06:09. | :06:14.
It made me feel violated. You do not know where they have been, what | :06:14. | :06:20.
they have done. You do not know who they are and what they're after. | :06:20. | :06:25.
Stephanie was devastated by the thought of having intruders in her | :06:25. | :06:33.
home. The initial feeling, especially from Stephanie was, she | :06:33. | :06:39.
wants to get out. That is why it I cleaned the whole place. It was a | :06:39. | :06:43.
case of grabbed a load of disinfectant, bleach, cleaning | :06:43. | :06:48.
products, and go around the whole flat, cleaning, hoovering and | :06:48. | :06:54.
dusting to try to get the feeling of normality back. Feel like it is | :06:54. | :07:01.
our apartment again. To add insult to injury, the burglars also stole | :07:01. | :07:06.
the Mercedes sports car. They were caught on camera driving out of the | :07:06. | :07:11.
underground car park. It was kind of like the second wave. Go down | :07:11. | :07:16.
the lift, see the entry space where the car was and it was just like, | :07:16. | :07:24.
bang, there is the final hit. out later how the detective work of | :07:24. | :07:34.
:07:34. | :07:42. | ||
Sunder linked them to their home and the theft. -- Sandra. And we'll | :07:42. | :07:45.
see how Sandra gets on with her detective work later in the | :07:45. | :07:50.
programme. But first, let's take a look at this morning's CCTV. York | :07:50. | :07:56.
station and this man tries to sort at a row at the taxi rank by | :07:56. | :08:01.
punching his victim unconscious on the floor. The third who flew - | :08:01. | :08:07.
threw the punch goes back into the station, giving us a proper look. | :08:07. | :08:16.
Be cannot forget that shed in a hurry! Give us a call. -- that | :08:16. | :08:20.
shirt. These two are heading into a general store in Slough. They do | :08:20. | :08:27.
not want to be recognised. They have hand guns and threaten staff. | :08:27. | :08:33.
It turns violent. His scarf is starting to slip so we can see part | :08:33. | :08:38.
of his face. The shopkeeper gets pulled over the counter and hit | :08:38. | :08:43.
over their head. Behind him, the second rubber casually puts his | :08:43. | :08:52.
weapon down and fills a bank with whisky. -- robber. If you have seen | :08:53. | :09:02.
:09:03. | :09:03. | ||
this pair, help us make sure they are caught. March of this year, a | :09:03. | :09:08.
chicken shop in the Forest Gate area of London. Tempers flare. | :09:08. | :09:14.
There is pushing and shoving. Where is this guy going? He is arming | :09:14. | :09:21.
himself with a golf club. He comes behind the victim and whacks him. | :09:21. | :09:27.
He is left in a critical condition with a three inch laceration to his | :09:27. | :09:34.
head. We need this guy's name. Shocking stuff! If any of those | :09:34. | :09:37.
faces look familiar, give us a call. Our number is 08000 468 999. Or you | :09:37. | :09:45.
can text us on 63399. Text CW, space and then your message. And | :09:45. | :09:48.
that space is really important - if you don't put it in - your message | :09:48. | :09:52.
won't get through to us. Of course, you can e-mail us too. The address: | :09:52. | :09:55.
[email protected]. Now time for a quick update on yesterday's appeals. We | :09:55. | :09:58.
had a lot of calls on the attempted kidnapping of the young woman in | :09:58. | :10:01.
Kingston in London. You've phoned in with possible names and | :10:01. | :10:03.
locations for the attacker. Police are sifting through all that and | :10:03. | :10:08.
say they have a number of promising new leads. Plus we got some really | :10:08. | :10:11.
detailed information on Wanted Face Patrick Feeney, wanted in | :10:11. | :10:17.
connection with fraud and money laundering. Now let's go back to | :10:17. | :10:27.
:10:27. | :10:29. | ||
Covent Garden and Alice. Thanks, Rav. It's Friday, lots of people | :10:29. | :10:33.
will be arriving in London for a weekend break. Now, 30 million | :10:33. | :10:35.
tourists visit London every year, and this summer, the Met are | :10:35. | :10:42.
running a special campaign called Operation Trafalgar. Hundreds of | :10:42. | :10:45.
officers including the mounted police are making these streets a | :10:45. | :10:55.
:10:55. | :10:57. | ||
safer place to be for everyoe who Officers whose job it is to keep | :10:57. | :11:02.
people save have their job cut out for them. It is teeming with | :11:02. | :11:08.
tourists and people on a night out. They are targets for pickpockets. | :11:08. | :11:12.
Operation Trafalgar has been launched to keep people safe in the | :11:12. | :11:17.
West End. It is a high profile, long-term operation we are running | :11:17. | :11:22.
in the West End. We want to make the West End of London hostile and | :11:22. | :11:28.
diamond for criminals to operate. Operation Trafalgar draws on | :11:28. | :11:32.
officers from many sections of the mat. Tonight mounted officers are | :11:32. | :11:38.
on patrol. A we're here to reassure members of the public and to combat | :11:38. | :11:42.
antisocial behaviour, linked to alcohol, as well as personal | :11:43. | :11:48.
robbery. What is the plan for tonight? We will be aiming to go | :11:48. | :11:55.
past the key areas. There will be looking at theatres, licensed | :11:55. | :12:01.
premises. -- we will be looking. All areas that will be busy. They | :12:01. | :12:06.
continue their patrols around the Charing Cross area on a busy Friday | :12:06. | :12:11.
night. It is not long before they are responding to a call for help | :12:11. | :12:15.
from members of the public who had detained the suspected fraudster. | :12:15. | :12:20.
By the time I catch up with them, they have detained the suspects and | :12:20. | :12:26.
up in the process of searching them. They may have been a fraud in | :12:26. | :12:31.
PizzaExpress. He was seen running out, chased by a member of staff. | :12:32. | :12:37.
He was given chase. I think the police and horses arrived and he | :12:37. | :12:44.
has been arrested. The suspected con man is not happy about being | :12:44. | :12:49.
caught. You can see his bag of forged notes in hands of one of the | :12:49. | :12:57.
officers. What just happened? had offered false cash, forged | :12:57. | :13:02.
notes, in PizzaExpress. He was chased across Trafalgar Square. | :13:02. | :13:07.
When we arrived on the scene, he was searched. He had copious | :13:07. | :13:13.
amounts of cash on him. It is believed they are forgeries and he | :13:13. | :13:22.
has been arrested. As they get back on patrol, Charlotte needs a little | :13:22. | :13:30.
out from a restaurant chain. It is clear to see the man to brunch are | :13:30. | :13:38.
both effective and very ill crowd pleaser. -- have mounted branch are | :13:38. | :13:45.
both effective and a real crowd pleaser. With me now is Chief | :13:45. | :13:53.
Inspector Kevin Hobson. As we saw there in the film, Operation | :13:53. | :14:01.
Trafalgar is a major undertaking. Indeed it is. Every week over 1000 | :14:01. | :14:04.
officers are deployed on the streets in the West End. It is a | :14:04. | :14:10.
very busy summer. You will be stretched to full capacity. Will | :14:10. | :14:19.
Londoners be safe? They well. We do want people to take personal | :14:19. | :14:24.
responsibility. We have personal safety advice and crime prevention | :14:24. | :14:28.
advice being given to people. We have lots of information. We want | :14:28. | :14:34.
people to follow worse on our Twitter account. What should we | :14:34. | :14:41.
know? -- follow us. If you have a mobile phone, do not hold it in | :14:41. | :14:48.
front of you. Thank you for talking to us. Let's find out have the | :14:48. | :14:58.
:14:58. | :14:59. | ||
I want you to watch very closely for a couple of minutes. This may | :14:59. | :15:06.
help you not to lose your wallet. Sophie, this must be an absolutely | :15:06. | :15:11.
fascinating job? There is always a variation in what we are | :15:11. | :15:15.
investigating. And you get to hear about all the latest scams, one of | :15:15. | :15:21.
which is table surfing. Tommy about that. Often there will be someone | :15:21. | :15:25.
pretending to be a tourist. They come into the cafe or bar way you | :15:25. | :15:30.
are having a drink. They will put something in front of you, and say, | :15:30. | :15:35.
I really want to get to Big Ben, can you tell me how I do that? And | :15:35. | :15:45.
:15:45. | :15:45. | ||
then they walk away with the map, and your phone is gone. So look out | :15:45. | :15:50.
for that. And handbags are always a target, and there a sneaky ways to | :15:50. | :15:56.
get one. What happens is, you could be sitting in a restaurant or pub, | :15:56. | :16:00.
your bag will be on the floor, you think it is safe because you have | :16:00. | :16:04.
left it there. They move in behind you, take the bag while you're | :16:04. | :16:11.
distracted, and before you know, it's gone. If your bag is gone and | :16:11. | :16:19.
the thief is gone, is there any chance of getting it back? | :16:19. | :16:26.
looking to CCTV, and identify the suspect. And then you are at | :16:26. | :16:31.
spotting those phases in the crowd. Do these people usually coming | :16:32. | :16:38.
quietly, or is it very suddenly? They think they have got away with | :16:38. | :16:43.
the crime. They do normally come quietly. But they haven't | :16:43. | :16:50.
necessarily got away with it. Beware when you're out and about. | :16:50. | :17:00.
:17:00. | :17:12. | ||
Time now to take a look at today's Wanted Faces. Today we're showing | :17:12. | :17:15.
you some of the suspects we've already shown you this week. The | :17:15. | :17:18.
response has been good, but police want more information. First up, | :17:18. | :17:21.
this man, James Hannon. We showed you his face on Monday, but police | :17:21. | :17:25.
still need more details on where he is now. He was charged with an | :17:25. | :17:27.
offence of aggravated burglary in 2003, but failed to appear before | :17:27. | :17:32.
Croydon Crown Court. It's thought he may now be living in Ireland, | :17:32. | :17:34.
but also has connections to the Tunbridge Wells. Next, Steven Brown. | :17:34. | :17:37.
He was arrested in May 2010 on suspicion of breaching a sexual | :17:37. | :17:41.
offences prevention order. He has a noticeable Westcountry accent and | :17:41. | :17:42.
noticeable Westcountry accent and still has connections in the | :17:42. | :17:47.
still has connections in the Wiltshire and Bristol areas. On | :17:47. | :17:50.
Tuesday we showed you Mohamed Ahmed Aden. He was given two years in | :17:50. | :17:54.
prison for robbery, but didn't turn up in court to be sentenced. He's | :17:54. | :17:56.
described as having a Somali accent and has connections to the | :17:56. | :17:59.
Leicester and London areas. Do you know where he is? | :17:59. | :18:02.
And finally this man, Sal Adams, will be 30 tomorrow. Last year he | :18:02. | :18:05.
was sentenced in his absence to three years and nine months for | :18:05. | :18:08.
fraud and offences relating to the Proceeds of Crime Act. He has a | :18:08. | :18:11.
north-west accent and connections to the Blackpool area. He's also | :18:11. | :18:14.
known to gamble in casinos. You gave us potential locations for him, | :18:14. | :18:17.
but let's spoil his birthday and put him behind bars. If you | :18:17. | :18:21.
recognise him, or any of our Wanted Faces, give us a call. | :18:21. | :18:29.
Coming up on today's programme: Tackling the muggers and | :18:29. | :18:35.
pickpockets in the early hours, how the Met faces the challenges of | :18:35. | :18:37.
police in the city streets. They stole thousands of pounds of | :18:37. | :18:41.
jewellery from a posh Pent house. Can you help us identify these | :18:41. | :18:48.
thieves? And Irene's beloved china figures - | :18:48. | :18:52.
there theft left her heart broken. Can you help us track them down? | :18:52. | :18:56.
Now, back to Dave and news of a highly organised scam that the Met | :18:56. | :19:06.
need your help with. Yes, Rav. It is a scam you can fall | :19:06. | :19:10.
victim to when you're using one of these in its -- cash machine. We | :19:10. | :19:16.
have some CCTV of the gang in operation. You will see that the | :19:17. | :19:22.
victim is the man at the cash machine. The suspect can be seen | :19:22. | :19:26.
gathering around him. One looks over his shoulder and takes a note | :19:26. | :19:31.
of his pain while the other and drops a fiver on the fourth. He | :19:31. | :19:35.
taps the victim on his shoulder and points out the money on the floor. | :19:35. | :19:40.
While he is distracted, another member of the gang steals the card, | :19:40. | :19:44.
then all of the gang members disburse, leaving the victim | :19:44. | :19:48.
wondering where his kadis. PC Victoria Yusuf, this is an | :19:48. | :19:52.
organised gang you're looking for. Yes, we believe that this is a very | :19:52. | :19:54.
well-organised gang who are suspected of stealing bank cards | :19:54. | :20:01.
and PIN numbers from people as they use cashpoint machines. There's | :20:01. | :20:03.
usualy five people working together, they all have specific roles such | :20:03. | :20:06.
as the look out, the observer, the distraction man and card-taker. | :20:06. | :20:09.
What happened after they got the card? These guys work fast. The | :20:09. | :20:12.
victim had 300 pounds withdrawn from his account almost immediately | :20:12. | :20:15.
after the gang stole his card. They then used the card to purchase | :20:15. | :20:18.
alcohol, so the total amount of money stolen was about 600. 600 | :20:18. | :20:22.
in a matter of moment. And they are very crafty, because they don't | :20:22. | :20:26.
take the money, just the card. The victim is waiting because he thinks | :20:26. | :20:33.
the card will come out, and then after a couple of minutes, realises. | :20:33. | :20:43.
:20:43. | :20:46. | ||
How it is too late. So people really need to be aware of anyone | :20:46. | :20:50.
who appears to be getting to close to them whilst getting money out of | :20:50. | :20:56.
a hole in the wall? Don't let anybody get too close to you while | :20:56. | :21:00.
you're using the cash., and beware of what is going on around you. | :21:00. | :21:10.
Sensible advice. Now back to Alice. Now to Croydon and the pensioner | :21:10. | :21:12.
whose treasured collection of porcelain figures has been targeted | :21:12. | :21:19.
by burglars - not once, but twice. I started collecting royal Doulton | :21:19. | :21:26.
because my aunt was interested in the 1930s. Every year for 20 years, | :21:26. | :21:34.
I bought her a figure for Christmas. From Irene, her Royal Doulton | :21:34. | :21:38.
figurines will be linked to the memory of her beloved Aunty Hilda. | :21:38. | :21:44.
These figurines have become extremely important to me. They | :21:44. | :21:51.
trigger memories of the past. two years ago, burglars broke into | :21:51. | :21:55.
her home, stealing three figures and with them part of the | :21:55. | :22:00.
connection with her late aunt. Somebody just comes in and thinks | :22:00. | :22:06.
it is OK to walk off with everything that you have collected | :22:06. | :22:13.
and part of your life, part of your history. You can't recapture that. | :22:13. | :22:16.
Irene's insurance company paid out, and she was able to replace the | :22:16. | :22:20.
stolen items. But her prize collection would soon be targeted | :22:20. | :22:27.
again. In March of this year, Irene and her husband, who suffers from | :22:27. | :22:33.
lung disease, left the house for a rare night out. As they set off, | :22:33. | :22:40.
burglars were preparing to strike for a second time. It all happened, | :22:40. | :22:47.
I'm afraid, when on the first evening for some weeks, because of | :22:47. | :22:54.
my husband's health, we had gone out to supper. As Eileen and her | :22:54. | :22:58.
husband enjoyed their night out, an intruder was busy working on how to | :22:58. | :23:06.
get into their house. We believe the suspects have climbed through | :23:06. | :23:12.
the kitchen window. It is quite high up from the floor level. | :23:12. | :23:16.
he had forced his way in, the intruder's first move was to make | :23:16. | :23:21.
sure he wouldn't be disturbed. He fixed the chain across the front | :23:21. | :23:25.
door so no one could get in. Then he took his pick of the couple's | :23:25. | :23:29.
prized possessions - jewellery, war medals and Irene's beloved | :23:29. | :23:38.
figurines. We believe the suspect made off with about nine Royal | :23:38. | :23:42.
Doulton figurines worth about 1,900, some sentimental jewellery | :23:42. | :23:47.
and some plates that had a lot of sentimental value to Irene as well. | :23:47. | :23:52.
At about half-past 11, Eileen and her husband returned from their | :23:52. | :23:56.
evening out, but when I ring tried the door, she realised something | :23:56. | :24:04.
was wrong. We couldn't get in. I became rather worried, because it | :24:04. | :24:13.
was very cold, and my husband's oxygen had run out, so that was | :24:13. | :24:19.
really quite frightening. I ring's neighbour and his girlfriend were | :24:19. | :24:23.
arriving home when they spotted the distressed couple. When I explained | :24:23. | :24:28.
what had happened, Glen, an electrician, offered to help. | :24:28. | :24:33.
Grabbing a set of cutters, he was able to get the door open. When I | :24:33. | :24:39.
walked in, the kitchen window was wide open. He said, don't go any | :24:39. | :24:42.
further. You mustn't go into the house until I have looked to see if | :24:42. | :24:47.
anybody is still there. I went upstairs and there was an absolute | :24:47. | :24:52.
mess, all of the jewellery boxes all over the beds, lights on, doors | :24:52. | :24:56.
open. He came back and said it was safe for me to going, but we had | :24:56. | :25:01.
been burgled. My husband was very upset, and I think he said, not | :25:01. | :25:08.
again. Irene was devastated to have been burgled once more, and like | :25:08. | :25:12.
the last time, the thieves seem to have targeted her cherished | :25:12. | :25:17.
heirlooms. The three most expensive Royal Doulton figurines were stolen | :25:17. | :25:22.
again from Irene's collection. This would indicate that the person | :25:22. | :25:24.
committing the burglaries does have a knowledge of world Doulton | :25:24. | :25:31.
figurines and their value. In all, nine figures were stolen, including | :25:31. | :25:34.
the first one Irene bought a hard aren't back in the 1950s. They are | :25:34. | :25:42.
worth almost 2,000. Boss Dai Greene would get some money back | :25:42. | :25:45.
from her insurers, she is more concerned about the memory she has | :25:45. | :25:52.
lost. I find it... Very sad, very depressing, and at the same time, I | :25:52. | :25:59.
resent having my past intruded on and taken away from me. | :25:59. | :26:03.
Such a shame. Remember, if you know anything about that incident in | :26:03. | :26:06.
Croydon on March 31st, please get in touch and help the police find | :26:06. | :26:13.
Irene's figurines. Mick Reynolds, your agency works closely with the | :26:13. | :26:23.
:26:23. | :26:25. | ||
police to help reduce crime by marking property. First of all, | :26:25. | :26:33.
take pictures, because a picture tells a thousand words. Then use a | :26:33. | :26:43.
:26:43. | :26:50. | ||
forensic tagging system. When you put this plate under UV light, it | :26:50. | :26:54.
makes it very easy for anybody checking property to pick up on | :26:54. | :27:01.
this product. And there is another mark there? This one is slightly | :27:01. | :27:05.
more visible than the other, that one is almost totally invisible | :27:05. | :27:15.
:27:15. | :27:15. | ||
under the stop. One of the muses metals, and the other plastic | :27:15. | :27:25.
:27:25. | :27:39. | ||
compounds. Thank you for talking to Gareth, you have got some CCTV of | :27:39. | :27:47.
an incident in South Wales when a jewellers was burgled. Tell us | :27:47. | :27:52.
about it. You can see the couple that you want to identify. This | :27:52. | :27:57.
couple pretended to be a mother and son. They look pretty normal, | :27:57. | :28:07.
:28:07. | :28:12. | ||
chatting away as normal customers. They're asking to see all sorts of | :28:12. | :28:18.
jewellery and are having a good look at it. | :28:18. | :28:22.
And now it looks like they're being helpful here and helping the shop | :28:22. | :28:29.
assistants with the packing. Yes, it is all part of their act. We've | :28:29. | :28:32.
examined the CCTV to see how they managed to get away with so much | :28:32. | :28:37.
jewellery right in front of the shop assistants. He put the jury | :28:37. | :28:45.
down inside his sleeve, and then from his sleeve into the pocket. | :28:45. | :28:49.
almost create a diversion with the other hand, but it is that hand at | :28:49. | :28:52.
the top, it somehow goes up his sleeve, and somehow he gets it into | :28:52. | :28:59.
his pocket away from the staff's rise. Very crafty. And it was very | :28:59. | :29:06.
high value. 5,000 worth of jewellery was taken. | :29:06. | :29:09.
They left a 40 deposit, saying they would be back to pick up the | :29:09. | :29:13.
jury, but when they left, they never did return. So they really | :29:13. | :29:18.
are posing as normal customers. Very crafty. What description do | :29:18. | :29:28.
:29:28. | :29:28. | ||
you have to go on? The male is Eastern European, approximately six | :29:28. | :29:32.
foot tall in his late 20s with bad facial acne and at least two gold | :29:32. | :29:35.
teeth. The female is described as approximately 5 foot 3, in her mid | :29:35. | :29:43.
to late 40s. And she was saying she was his | :29:43. | :29:48.
mother, that was the ruse used? That's right. | :29:48. | :29:51.
Well, hopefully someone out there will have some information on their | :29:51. | :29:54.
whereabouts, and if you do, please get in touch. Most of us would like | :29:54. | :29:58.
to think that we wouldn't fall for this type of scam, but here to show | :29:58. | :30:02.
us how easy it is is Stuart Watkins who is an expert in sleight of hand. | :30:02. | :30:05.
Stuart, just why do we fall victim to this when it's happening right | :30:05. | :30:14.
under our noses? It is professional distraction, psychology, Ms | :30:14. | :30:18.
direction. It can be easily done with the right people. You do this | :30:18. | :30:24.
legally. You are going to show us how easy this sleight of hand is. | :30:24. | :30:27.
Our floor manager is just sweating behind camera there, because he has | :30:27. | :30:34.
lent us his wedding ring. 91 Ben Tish show me how easy it is to make | :30:34. | :30:44.
it disappear into thin air. -- and you were going to show me. He holds | :30:44. | :30:47.
it close, starts to use a misdirection, and it is in that | :30:47. | :30:57.
:30:57. | :31:07. | ||
hand, and then it is gone. But I do I always keep them in a very safe | :31:07. | :31:14.
place. I was focusing on your hand. I did not see that. I was watching | :31:14. | :31:22.
you so closely. It literally seemed to disappear into thinner. This is | :31:22. | :31:29.
what they are doing. You are creating a diversion. They are | :31:29. | :31:36.
looking somewhere else and then it happens. It is so easily done, even | :31:36. | :31:46.
:31:46. | :31:46. | ||
when it happens again. These are recognisable as the lottery slips | :31:46. | :31:53.
we will see every day. Everyone at home will be watching you like a | :31:53. | :31:57.
hawk. I get you to see what I want you to see and get you to do what I | :31:57. | :32:04.
want you to do. Again, in the right direction. I have no idea where | :32:04. | :32:14.
:32:14. | :32:15. | ||
they have gone. Unbelievable! You have just made 80 quid out of | :32:15. | :32:25.
:32:25. | :32:28. | ||
nowhere. Thank you for joining us. More on those burglars who have | :32:28. | :32:34.
been stealing from upmarket flats. They stole thousands of pounds of | :32:34. | :32:42.
property before escaping in a Mercedes. I am always wondering | :32:42. | :32:47.
where that everything will still be here. Sandra was determined to | :32:47. | :32:53.
fight back. She distributed leaflets, showing CCTV images of | :32:53. | :32:59.
burglars around her local area. physically walked around the area | :32:59. | :33:06.
and distributed them to the concierge desks to the local | :33:06. | :33:11.
buildings that are similar to ours. Shortly after she had handed out | :33:11. | :33:17.
the leaflet, her detective work received a breakthrough. She | :33:17. | :33:20.
received a call explaining there had been a burglary at a | :33:20. | :33:26.
neighbouring block. I telephone them and they confirmed they | :33:26. | :33:30.
recognised the burglars from there CCTV, comparing them to the | :33:30. | :33:36.
pictures I have left, and realised they were the same people. This | :33:36. | :33:41.
second burglary shared the same method. Once again the suspects | :33:41. | :33:47.
were caught approaching the complex on CCTV. This time they were seen. | :33:47. | :33:53.
The cleaner disturb the suspects in the garage area of the second | :33:53. | :33:58.
burglary. The suspects had to break out of the garage area. The cleaner | :33:58. | :34:05.
later identified the same two suspects. In the images from the | :34:05. | :34:11.
flyers handed out by Sandra. Natalia was the victim this time. | :34:11. | :34:20.
The spoils from the burglary were huge. I had a Baywatch, which to be | :34:20. | :34:30.
:34:30. | :34:31. | ||
insured would be 32,000. -- a watch. I had some other watchers. | :34:31. | :34:38.
One had diamonds in it. I had a very expensive diamond ring, | :34:38. | :34:45.
costing 60,000. I had Chanel earrings. All that has gone. It is | :34:46. | :34:54.
estimated at about 150,000. I was crying for about a week every day. | :34:54. | :34:59.
Because the contents is very expensive, not many insurers would | :34:59. | :35:04.
insure me for this type of value. It would cost me a lot of money | :35:04. | :35:14.
:35:14. | :35:14. | ||
every year to be insured so I did not take out insurance. Some jerk's | :35:14. | :35:20.
detective work linked the two burglaries. -- Sandra. The suspects | :35:20. | :35:25.
had stolen hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of property. They're | :35:25. | :35:30.
cool, calm and know what they are doing. They make a one to commit | :35:30. | :35:37.
further offences and the need to catch them. -- they may go on. | :35:37. | :35:42.
you can hear a lot of clattering and banging in the background, it | :35:42. | :35:48.
is Covent Garden and they are setting up. Just describe to me | :35:48. | :35:54.
what went through your mind when it opened the front door? There is the | :35:54. | :35:59.
thought that people have been into your home and been three of | :35:59. | :36:03.
personal possessions and take and what they please. You think your | :36:03. | :36:10.
home is somewhere to be safe and secure. It is your private space | :36:10. | :36:17.
violated, isn't it? You turned detective, why? Having had this bad | :36:17. | :36:23.
experience, it is the thought of having it happen to someone else. I | :36:23. | :36:26.
produced flyers and went around to the local community to raise | :36:27. | :36:34.
awareness and warned them. You had some success, didn't you? Yes. | :36:34. | :36:38.
Linking the burglaries has helped the police with their inquiries. | :36:39. | :36:43.
What would you like to say to anybody who knows all recognises | :36:43. | :36:50.
them? If anyone recognises them, please get in touch. Let's hope | :36:50. | :36:58.
they do. As she says, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously. It is | :36:58. | :37:08.
time for us to get an update on Operation Trafalgar. It is a busy | :37:08. | :37:13.
Friday night in the West End. There are thousands of tourists and | :37:13. | :37:19.
revellers enjoying the weather in late May. We are here as part of | :37:19. | :37:24.
Operation Trafalgar. It is based on an idea used by the police force in | :37:24. | :37:28.
New York in the 1990s. It means there are extra officers patrolling | :37:28. | :37:34.
the streets to make it safe. tend to encounter things like drink | :37:34. | :37:39.
fuelled violence, assaults. Pickpockets, we have a big problem | :37:39. | :37:44.
with pickpockets. With thousands of people swamping the West End, it is | :37:45. | :37:50.
not long before a couple of suspects are stopped - one of whom | :37:50. | :37:54.
is unknown thief. We have been given something to mention that the | :37:54. | :38:00.
officers have arrested someone suspected of pickpocketing. | :38:00. | :38:05.
officers had stopped the two suspects. A member of the public | :38:05. | :38:11.
has just handed me three cards - and oyster and two bank cards - | :38:11. | :38:19.
that have been found on the burglar. That is yards away from the | :38:19. | :38:23.
possible pickpockets. We stop these guys very close to the place where | :38:23. | :38:31.
the bank cards have been found. -- stopped. They do not have enough | :38:31. | :38:36.
evidence to arrest the men. They do believe they are up to no good, | :38:36. | :38:41.
getting very close to passers by. They issued with an antisocial | :38:41. | :38:46.
dispersal order. This means you are banned from coming here for the | :38:46. | :38:53.
next 24 hours. If you are seen in the area in that time, you will be | :38:53. | :38:58.
arrested. As the two suspected pickpockets melt into the crowds on | :38:58. | :39:02.
Shaftesbury Avenue, it is time to check out a new addition to the | :39:02. | :39:08.
West End street furniture. Towering above the revellers are police | :39:08. | :39:13.
podiums. The podiums are here to be another set of eyes in this kind. | :39:13. | :39:20.
It is so busy. There are so many people walking down. They can see | :39:20. | :39:25.
over the tops of people, through people. You can see a lot more from | :39:25. | :39:30.
up there than at street level. the night progresses, they are | :39:30. | :39:34.
alerted by the CCTV control room to a known drug user acting | :39:34. | :39:39.
suspiciously in nearby Soho. Dave knows the suspect. He has dealt | :39:39. | :39:45.
with him on several previous occasions. He finds a crack pipe on | :39:45. | :39:51.
the suspect. He admits to having smoked crack cocaine earlier. | :39:51. | :39:56.
You're not going to say who you got the drugs off, are you? Although | :39:56. | :40:01.
the suspect admits having smoked crack cocaine, no drugs are found | :40:01. | :40:07.
in his possession, so he cannot be arrested. When you going to change | :40:07. | :40:13.
your lifestyle? How old are you now? You are not exactly a spring | :40:13. | :40:23.
chicken, are you? Exactly. I want you to leave. Disburse, go. Leave, | :40:23. | :40:30.
leave, leave. No drugs tonight. He has had drugs earlier on. He has a | :40:30. | :40:36.
crack pipe. This is what they used when they smoke crack from street | :40:36. | :40:41.
dealers. They come across an incident. For one reveller, the | :40:41. | :40:45.
night ends on a nasty note. He has been a victim of hugger mugging. | :40:45. | :40:52.
That is where try to befriend someone and get up close and stills | :40:52. | :41:01.
from them. We are dealing with an incident of hugger mugging. They | :41:01. | :41:05.
have approached a victim in the street, done the usual friendly, | :41:05. | :41:10.
drunken dance and taken his own out of his pocket. It has been | :41:10. | :41:14.
witnessed by officers who are following the gentleman and they | :41:14. | :41:20.
have been arrested. It is the start of the busy summer for Operation | :41:20. | :41:24.
Trafalgar. Let's catch up with what has been happening since we have | :41:24. | :41:30.
been on air. A possible name has come through already from the CCTV | :41:30. | :41:36.
we showed two earlier of the armed will -- robbery at the convenience | :41:36. | :41:40.
store in Slough. Lots of you calling in about the attempted | :41:40. | :41:44.
kidnap of the young woman in Kingston from yesterday. More | :41:44. | :41:53.
potential names for this picture, which the police are looking into. | :41:53. | :41:57.
That man clearly needs to be caught. That is all we have got time for | :41:57. | :42:03.
today. It has been a good week, hasn't it? A great week. | :42:03. | :42:09.
Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. It is our last day in | :42:09. | :42:13.
London. I have had a great time. The highlight was going out on the | :42:13. | :42:19.
Thames with the marine police. enjoy playing about on the boat | :42:19. | :42:25.
yesterday. Next week we up of two Wiltshire. We will find out how | :42:25. | :42:28.
police are tackling the distribution of illegal drugs and | :42:29. | :42:34.
criminals moving on to their patch. Quite a few see will Chet as a soft | :42:34. | :42:44.
:42:44. | :42:45. | ||
touch. Then we go to Wales, where. Police are cat -- cracking down on | :42:45. | :42:53.
-- where Welsh police are cracking down on scrap merchants. Check out | :42:53. | :42:58. |
