stealing money from thousands of formal ball people with just one | :00:14. | :00:24.
:00:24. | :00:43. | ||
everyday this week, facing up to the feelings that get you down. We need | :00:43. | :00:50.
your help to sort them out. Today, it starts with a phone call, | :00:50. | :00:58.
but it is a con that netted these criminals a quarter of 1 million. | :00:58. | :01:03.
We are taking to the skies above central London to see how the Met | :01:03. | :01:05.
Police's Air Support Unit helps fight crime in the capital. | :01:05. | :01:11.
And, hunting for the thief who made off with a unique piece of boxing | :01:11. | :01:17.
history. Our roadshow team are out and about, | :01:17. | :01:21.
and they are with the Met Police on the north-eastern edge of London, so | :01:21. | :01:27.
where are you? Good morning, today I am in Essex, | :01:27. | :01:33.
the home to the Air Support Unit. There are three helicopters based | :01:33. | :01:41.
here, on call to police London, behind me, 24 hours a day. They are | :01:41. | :01:45.
the capital's ie in the sky, and we will find out how instrumental they | :01:46. | :01:52.
are in the fight against crime. There is nothing worse than a scam | :01:52. | :01:56.
which deliberately targets older people, and there are sophisticated | :01:56. | :01:59.
fraudsters at large who will stop at nothing to get their hands on your | :01:59. | :02:07.
money. If you want to avoid becoming a victim, watch carefully. | :02:08. | :02:12.
Thousands of people in London have been ripped off by a scam known as | :02:12. | :02:19.
courier fraud in the past two years, and these offences are on the rise. | :02:19. | :02:25.
Even people who know all about crime can be caught out. This woman is a | :02:25. | :02:29.
retired businesswoman in her 70s and has been a member of her local crime | :02:29. | :02:34.
prevention panel for more than 20 years. But she was taken in by this | :02:34. | :02:39.
very sophisticated scam. What happens is the fraudsters get hold | :02:39. | :02:44.
of victims' phone numbers and addresses from online directories, | :02:44. | :02:51.
they contain information, they will phone up the victim, purporting to | :02:51. | :02:56.
be from the bank or the police, they will tell them their card has been | :02:56. | :02:59.
compromised. She was getting ready to go out to a charity event when | :02:59. | :03:03.
the phone rang. She was eager to leave the house, so her mind was | :03:04. | :03:12.
elsewhere. The fraudsters had timed their call perfectly. I am from the | :03:12. | :03:17.
Apple Store, he said, somebody has cloned your card, they have used it | :03:17. | :03:23.
to buy something in the store. convinced her that somebody was | :03:23. | :03:29.
using her card details to make fraudulent transactions. They will | :03:29. | :03:32.
gain the trust of the victim by saying they have stopped the fraud, | :03:32. | :03:37.
and they will need to collect the cards from them. The fraudster told | :03:37. | :03:40.
her to call her bank, using the contact number printed on the back | :03:41. | :03:46.
of her card. But they held the end of the line open, so when the victim | :03:46. | :03:51.
phones back, they are connected to the full studies or their | :03:51. | :03:55.
accomplice. She thought she was phoning the bank, but she was | :03:55. | :04:01.
speaking to another criminal. plausible man with an educated voice | :04:01. | :04:07.
and said the telephone. He asked for my name, the questions he asked are | :04:07. | :04:11.
exactly like when you bring up your bank and want to do something by | :04:11. | :04:16.
telephone banking. The fraudster said he was transferring her call to | :04:17. | :04:21.
her bank's Security Department. This time, there was another voice, | :04:21. | :04:28.
again, just another member of the gang. He said, you are never to give | :04:28. | :04:35.
away your pin number. I said, yes. I said, I have not done that. He said, | :04:36. | :04:40.
just press on the telephone keypad the first and the third numbers. | :04:40. | :04:47.
There was a pause, and he came back and said, sorry to bother you, could | :04:47. | :04:53.
we now have the two other missing numbers? They hold a piece of | :04:53. | :04:58.
software on an iPad or an iPhone close to the receiver, it will heal | :04:58. | :05:03.
-- here the ketones, and it will decode them into a pin number. | :05:03. | :05:09.
criminals told her that they needed her card and that they would send a | :05:09. | :05:15.
career to collect it. I said, how am I to know this is genuine? He said, | :05:15. | :05:22.
hold on. He went away. He said, I can give you the car registration | :05:22. | :05:27.
number. The criminals gave her the details of the taxi they had booked | :05:27. | :05:31.
and told her to put the card in an envelope. It arrived very quickly, I | :05:31. | :05:38.
was surprised, that was another thing that dawned on me afterwards. | :05:38. | :05:43.
After checking the registration, she handed over her card. The criminals | :05:43. | :05:49.
used it to go on a spending spree. She is one of thousands of victims | :05:50. | :05:56.
of career fraud in the London area. Here, this is just a fraction of the | :05:56. | :06:00.
thousands of pounds worth of stolen goods bought by the Courier | :06:00. | :06:06.
fraudsters using stolen cards. Police used this room at the station | :06:06. | :06:09.
to store the goods they have recovered from the fraudsters, from | :06:09. | :06:15.
televisions to design a close, hundreds of items have been seized. | :06:15. | :06:19.
In the last three years, there have been 3000 of these frauds in | :06:19. | :06:26.
London, totalling 10 million. January, these brothers were | :06:26. | :06:31.
convicted of career fraud against more than 200 people. They had | :06:31. | :06:36.
stolen a quarter of 1 million. The man on the left was sentenced to six | :06:36. | :06:41.
years and his brother to four years. They were the first suspects | :06:41. | :06:45.
convicted of this particular crime. They lived together in a council | :06:45. | :06:50.
flat in King's Cross. When we visited, it was full of designer | :06:50. | :06:58.
clothing, 50 bottles of aftershave, 2500 worth, design issues, jeans, | :06:58. | :07:03.
many of which had not been warned. They were living a highlife, one of | :07:04. | :07:09.
them had been abroad on holiday on other people's cards, four nights in | :07:09. | :07:13.
a Miami beach-front apartment. Henrietta was conned by a different | :07:13. | :07:19.
gang. Police say the full studies usually target older people. Most of | :07:19. | :07:24.
the victims tend to be elderly or otherwise for mobile. The oldest | :07:24. | :07:29.
victim we have had is over 100, many have been over 90, and the average | :07:29. | :07:34.
age is 74, relatively wealthy, living in decent areas, which is | :07:34. | :07:39.
where they make their money. Henrietta is angry that she has been | :07:39. | :07:47.
caught out by these very convincing crooks. I feel very cross. I have | :07:47. | :07:50.
been in this crime prevention business for a long time, the | :07:50. | :07:55.
training should have told me it was a fraud. But somehow, it did not, | :07:55. | :07:59.
because they did everything systematically, exactly as you would | :07:59. | :08:09.
:08:09. | :08:14. | ||
want you to be aware, if they get hold of your stolen cards, they will | :08:14. | :08:19.
be spending on them straightaway, often going to expensive shops. That | :08:19. | :08:25.
is the second part of this. The police want your help, especially to | :08:25. | :08:30.
track one woman, she has gone on a huge spending spree in a high-end | :08:30. | :08:34.
department store in stolen cards, and we have got some CCTV for you to | :08:34. | :08:38.
look at. She is using a bank card and tapping | :08:38. | :08:43.
in a pin number, but there is one problem. The bank card belongs to | :08:43. | :08:49.
somebody who is 78 years old. Police believe this woman used the card to | :08:49. | :08:56.
buy a diamond ring worth 13,900. Easy to spend money when it belongs | :08:56. | :09:06.
to somebody else. She looked good for 78! This is part | :09:06. | :09:11.
of a scam, they spend straightaway. Yes, once the career has dropped off | :09:11. | :09:16.
the card, they will tested at an ATM, and had to be shops and spend | :09:16. | :09:21.
the money. They want to know how much people have got in their | :09:21. | :09:24.
account, especially this one, you are keen to catch her. We have got | :09:25. | :09:31.
some more CCTV in London and Reading, again, shopping. Over a | :09:31. | :09:38.
period of two days, she spent 100,000 using two peoples cards, | :09:38. | :09:42.
both victims pensioners. Terrible for people taken in by this, it is | :09:42. | :09:47.
terribly upsetting. What is the advice? Never give your pin number | :09:47. | :09:53.
over the phone, do not fit into the phone, if they tell you to call back | :09:53. | :09:57.
to the bank, leave it for five minutes, go and get a capacity, | :09:57. | :10:01.
either that or use a different phone, use your mobile instead of a | :10:01. | :10:08.
landline. The aware. Lights, camera, action, time to take | :10:08. | :10:14.
a look at the first batch of CCTV footage from around the country, can | :10:14. | :10:19.
you help the police find any of this lot? | :10:19. | :10:22.
A man enters this designer shop in the Battersea area of London in | :10:22. | :10:28.
January. He wants some of the nice gear on sale but does not want to | :10:28. | :10:34.
pay for it. He hides himself behind the display and grabs one back, | :10:34. | :10:38.
hiding it in the plastic one he is holding. Then, he takes another and | :10:38. | :10:46.
hides that as well. His friend joins him and takes yet another bag. The | :10:46. | :10:50.
sales assistant asks if they need any help. But they have got | :10:50. | :10:54.
everything they came in for and make a move. | :10:54. | :11:03.
If you recognise them, get in touch. These men are heading towards acting | :11:03. | :11:08.
in West London. They are travelling light, when they get on the bus, and | :11:09. | :11:13.
take their seats by the luggage rack. Look what one of them is | :11:13. | :11:17.
carrying by the time they get off. It is a huge suitcase. Off on your | :11:17. | :11:23.
holidays? Can you spot the difference? The suitcase contained | :11:23. | :11:28.
jewellery worth almost 300 and 500 worth of clothes. It is an open and | :11:28. | :11:35.
shut case. Call us if you know them. | :11:35. | :11:40.
It is the end of the route on this bus in archway in London, this bus | :11:40. | :11:45.
driver is having trouble with a passenger who refuses to get off. He | :11:45. | :11:53.
is on the phone to police, as the man finally decides to leave. He | :11:53. | :11:58.
exits through the middle doors, but instead of walking off, he comes | :11:58. | :12:03.
round to the front. The cameras do not quite catch it, but he had but | :12:03. | :12:07.
the driver in the face. Let's help the police catch this violent man. | :12:07. | :12:11.
If you recognise him or any of the others, pick up the phone, you can | :12:11. | :12:20.
call us, text us or e-mail us. Remember to add the space in your | :12:20. | :12:29.
text message, or else your message will not get through. | :12:29. | :12:32.
Police in the neighbouring Thames Valley force are hunting for a thief | :12:32. | :12:38.
who made off with the unique piece of boxing history. | :12:38. | :12:43.
Jack Petersen was a boxing superstar. He was the first Welshman | :12:43. | :12:45.
to win both the British and Empire light heavyweight and heavyweight | :12:45. | :12:55.
:12:55. | :12:55. | ||
titles. In 1934, he secured his very prestigious Lonsdale Belt. He died | :12:55. | :12:59.
in 1990, and the belt is a priceless reminder of what he achieved. It | :13:00. | :13:06.
meant the world to his family. Until one day, it was stolen. It is | :13:06. | :13:11.
sickening, absolutely sickening. The thought of some thief coming in to | :13:11. | :13:21.
:13:21. | :13:22. | ||
my house and taking it, it fills me with disgust. Police believe the | :13:22. | :13:25.
belt was stolen sometime between March and May this year, from his | :13:25. | :13:34.
home in Buckinghamshire. We have oil central heating and we suddenly | :13:34. | :13:42.
realised, with my neighbours, that our oil tanks had been filtered, | :13:42. | :13:49.
people had stolen the oil. As a result, one becomes very conscious, | :13:49. | :13:54.
there is a thief around, somebody has stolen the oil. I said, my God, | :13:54. | :13:59.
I wonder if they have taken anything else. I looked for the belt and | :13:59. | :14:03.
found it had gone. Somebody came into my house and just walked out | :14:03. | :14:09.
with it. The nine carat gold belt, which was very similar to this one, | :14:09. | :14:18.
was made by a jewellery firm in 1908. These belts are very rare. | :14:18. | :14:22.
There are no replicas, so every belt is an original, there are not many | :14:22. | :14:30.
around. They would be collectable, very. It is a family heirloom. It is | :14:30. | :14:38.
about 100 years old. Dad fought for it. Jack retired at the age of 24 | :14:38. | :14:42.
after sustaining an eye injury. He was the first boxer to be elected | :14:42. | :14:48.
president of the British boxing board of control. He was extremely | :14:48. | :14:52.
well-known, he was a great icon in this area, and he went on to become | :14:52. | :14:58.
a steward on the board, and the chairman and president. He was a big | :14:58. | :15:06.
influence in Great Britain. Buckinghamshire, a unique family | :15:06. | :15:10.
heirloom is sorely missed, and Jack's someone sit back. Even at my | :15:10. | :15:15.
age, I would like to see that guy will stop I am prepared to fight him | :15:15. | :15:25.
for it anyway cares to say, because it is aided dusting act. -- it is a | :15:25. | :15:27.
disgusting act. He is understandably upset about the | :15:27. | :15:32.
theft of his father's belt. I am joined by Ian Williams from the | :15:32. | :15:35.
Thames Valley Case, who are investigating this case. It is | :15:35. | :15:44.
unusual. The item is unique. If we can look at it again, it is not the | :15:44. | :15:50.
same as the modern Lonsdale belts, is it? Yap, the main plaque has a | :15:50. | :15:56.
picture of Lord Lonsdale. This one has a picture of two boxers | :15:56. | :16:01.
fighting. We heard about all of thefts in the area. Do you think | :16:01. | :16:07.
they are linked? I don't believe that is linked. Getting this item | :16:07. | :16:13.
back is important to the family. You are boxing fan yourself, aren't you? | :16:13. | :16:17.
As a fan, I can appreciate the history behind it. But anyone who | :16:17. | :16:22.
meets John could understand the sentiments behind the item. A very | :16:22. | :16:28.
valuable item. The danger is that it could have been stolen for scrap. | :16:28. | :16:31.
would be a shame if that is what has happened and it has been melted | :16:31. | :16:36.
down. It is a night of such a story value. One theory is that it could | :16:36. | :16:41.
have been stolen to order. If you know anything, get in touch. | :16:41. | :16:46.
Time to look at today's wanted faces. First is this man, Constantin | :16:46. | :16:49.
Apostol. He is wanted by police in connection with a number of | :16:49. | :16:52.
burglaries in London and Essex. He is described as having greasy hair | :16:52. | :16:57.
and a small scar on his left arm. Detectives in North Yorkshire want | :16:57. | :17:02.
your help to find this man, Ashley Matthew Scott. He is wanted for | :17:02. | :17:04.
questioning in connection with a burglary where more than 30,000 | :17:04. | :17:11.
worth of property was taken. He has tattooed of Angels on his leg and | :17:11. | :17:14.
chest and is known to have connections in the Selby, Leeds and | :17:14. | :17:18.
York areas. Next, Farhan Khan, who also goes by | :17:18. | :17:28.
:17:28. | :17:31. | ||
the name Pervez Umer Mirza. He was jailed for two years for conspiracy | :17:31. | :17:33.
to defraud, but failed to keep to the conditions of his early release | :17:33. | :17:36.
and is now wanted act in prison. He is described as being of heavy | :17:36. | :17:37.
build, with connections to London and the Netherlands. | :17:37. | :17:40.
Finally, look at this man, Danoto Juverdano. Have you seen him | :17:40. | :17:45.
recently? He is wanted for questioning in connection with a | :17:45. | :17:55.
:17:55. | :18:01. | ||
burglary in London. Originally from Romania, he is not known to have any | :18:01. | :18:03.
friends, work or family in this country, but frequents the bonnet | :18:03. | :18:06.
area. He is sometimes unshaven and occasionally wears glasses. If you | :18:06. | :18:08.
recognise any of these guys, get in touch. | :18:08. | :18:18.
:18:18. | :18:20. | ||
Still to come: help us find this man, caught on CCTV just before he | :18:20. | :18:26.
stole 200 from an 84-year-old pensioner. | :18:26. | :18:36.
:18:36. | :18:42. | ||
If you are in London and you see a police helicopter in the sky, it | :18:42. | :18:44.
will have come from here. There are three helicopters based here. PC | :18:44. | :18:47.
Tony Donnelly regularly flies with the fleet. And very expensive kit it | :18:47. | :18:49.
is, too. It is about 5 million worth of equipment. We have a | :18:49. | :18:52.
digital downlink and uplink system, so it can be pictures from and to | :18:52. | :19:02.
:19:02. | :19:03. | ||
the aircraft. We have night some. It can light up a large area. Then we | :19:03. | :19:10.
have a try censored camera. Full colour TV camera. A telescope and a | :19:10. | :19:20.
:19:20. | :19:28. | ||
thermal imaging camera. And plenty inside as well? The camera feeds | :19:28. | :19:31.
inside to the screens here. It is all touchscreen technology, so I can | :19:31. | :19:34.
have the TV camera or the moving map. And I can tie the map to the | :19:34. | :19:37.
camera, so I can type in an address, and the camera will look at | :19:37. | :19:39.
that address. And you do this every day. What would you say your best | :19:39. | :19:45.
job has been? The best jobs are the missing people jobs, when you find | :19:45. | :19:51.
them and you know your search has assisted the police and you have | :19:51. | :19:56.
either saved somebody's life or found somebody's relative. Let's | :19:56. | :20:05.
look again. So you on the map there. I can put in a target and then skew | :20:05. | :20:11.
the camera to the exact address we are looking at. We spent a day in | :20:11. | :20:13.
the skies above central London with the crew of one of the helicopters | :20:13. | :20:17.
based here. High above the streets of London, | :20:18. | :20:22.
the sky police are on patrol. They can follow anything happening below | :20:22. | :20:28.
and capture it on camera. It down speed in excess of 100 miles an | :20:28. | :20:33.
hour. The Met Police by chopper had no problem following this speeding | :20:33. | :20:41.
motorbike. Left, northbound. He is pulling over. He has switched his | :20:41. | :20:47.
lights off. Three, two, one, now. was not long before the driver was | :20:47. | :20:57.
:20:57. | :20:59. | ||
stopped by the cops on the ground. Meet India 99, 6 million worth of | :20:59. | :21:04.
helicopter. There are another two like it in the fleet. Each has a | :21:04. | :21:09.
crew of three. Using the latest technology, they can police exactly | :21:09. | :21:17.
what is going on beneath them. name is PC Brad Franklin. I am an | :21:17. | :21:22.
air observer attached to the support unit. The job is to fly in the | :21:22. | :21:27.
aircraft and assist police on the ground with their jobs. Brad sits at | :21:27. | :21:31.
the back of the chopper will stop his job is to make tactical | :21:31. | :21:36.
decisions based on the maps and CCTV beamed onto the screens in front of | :21:36. | :21:41.
him. The unit is on constant stand-by, and the callouts can be | :21:41. | :21:46.
diverse, from vehicle pursuits to suspect searches. Much of their | :21:46. | :21:48.
day-to-day work involves looking for vulnerable people who have gone | :21:48. | :21:56.
missing. A call has come in. There is a search for an old man who is | :21:56. | :22:00.
missing from a local hospital. The helicopter crew can search faster | :22:00. | :22:07.
than anybody on the ground. A keen eye is vital. PC Chris Gould, who | :22:07. | :22:13.
sits next to the pilot, is operating the powerful camera, which has a | :22:13. | :22:18.
sophisticated zoom. It can pick up object which are miles away. The | :22:18. | :22:23.
team think the man may have wandered into these woods, but even with the | :22:23. | :22:27.
best view in the house, it is difficult to see through thick tree | :22:27. | :22:35.
cover. Some of these tree areas are too dense. They are working with | :22:35. | :22:39.
officers on the ground at all times. Brad decides a dog would search more | :22:39. | :22:48.
effectively on this occasion. was a negative result, but it is | :22:48. | :22:51.
also positive, because that area has been ticked off and we can look to | :22:51. | :22:59.
move resources elsewhere to find the person. The team can't do any more | :22:59. | :23:04.
to help here, but a call comes in that a man has been spotted with a | :23:04. | :23:09.
knife in a park in east London. This is just five minutes away, and India | :23:09. | :23:19.
99 is on the case. There are two males with knives, who have put them | :23:19. | :23:29.
down their trousers. One man with a T-shirt and an Afro. It is a sunny | :23:29. | :23:33.
day. There are a lot of people in the park. So first, we have to try | :23:33. | :23:41.
to identify the group with what was a sketchy description. That group, | :23:41. | :23:51.
:23:51. | :23:52. | ||
do you reckon? What did they just pass? They can hear the helicopter | :23:52. | :24:02.
overhead. We will see what we can do. He passed something to that guy, | :24:02. | :24:07.
but I didn't see what it was. think this is the man with the | :24:07. | :24:13.
knife. The chase is on. He has taken his cap off and route his wood, | :24:13. | :24:18.
which changes his appearance. were aware of our presence. We are | :24:18. | :24:21.
obviously quite audible, so they were moving away from the group and | :24:21. | :24:26.
going under tree cover, trying to change their clothing and basically | :24:26. | :24:36.
:24:36. | :24:37. | ||
trying to make it as difficult for us as possible. Running. He has a | :24:37. | :24:44.
couple of police officers behind him. Then they started to run and it | :24:44. | :24:49.
was not too difficult for us to control. The group split up, and | :24:50. | :24:53.
working with officers on the ground, India 99 is able to guide them to | :24:53. | :25:03.
:25:03. | :25:07. | ||
two of the men. We have a discarded kitchen knife. If someone is in a | :25:07. | :25:12.
park with lots of members of the public and is in possession of a | :25:12. | :25:16.
large kitchen knife, it is quite scary. So too have been part of that | :25:16. | :25:26.
:25:26. | :25:30. | ||
arrest is satisfying. Although the team at Lippits Hill rarely get to | :25:30. | :25:34.
handcuff criminals, they play a key role in keeping the streets of | :25:34. | :25:41.
London safe. I have come into the control room, | :25:41. | :25:44.
the nerve centre of the operation. I am joined by Inspector original | :25:44. | :25:52.
Brandon, who runs things around here. It is a big operation. We have | :25:52. | :25:55.
three helicopters and 48 members of staff that deliver this air support | :25:55. | :26:00.
service to London. I have to ask, is it a case of boys and their toys? | :26:00. | :26:04.
Although I know some women work here. There is certainly a great | :26:04. | :26:08.
deal of pleasure gained from flying helicopters, but we have three | :26:08. | :26:15.
female observers that add to our team. I am sure it is a lot of | :26:15. | :26:22.
people's dream job. Tony gave me a run through of how it works. So this | :26:22. | :26:26.
shot is from a helicopter which took off in our opening link. This is a | :26:27. | :26:30.
live shot coming from our helicopter. One of the benefits is | :26:30. | :26:34.
that we can broadcast the pictures live from the aircraft into control | :26:34. | :26:40.
rooms. Today Mr, ask the aircraft if they can pan right and zoom in to | :26:40. | :26:45.
the top of the Shard? We can talk to the helicopter and guide what the | :26:45. | :26:50.
camera shows us. This has a benefit to officers on the ground, because | :26:50. | :26:54.
it allows them to make tactical decisions and deploy officers | :26:54. | :27:01.
appropriate Lee. So you have this screen here, but the screen is | :27:01. | :27:04.
showing the same pictures at different units across the | :27:04. | :27:07.
Metropolitan force? Every control room in London is getting this live | :27:07. | :27:12.
feed. So as we work with the helicopter, those pictures are | :27:12. | :27:16.
coming into every control room, allowing them to make decisions. | :27:16. | :27:20.
have you seen a difference since using this? It must have been | :27:20. | :27:25.
developed over time. We have always had the camera capability. This | :27:25. | :27:29.
digital downlink allows us to put near broadcast quality teachers into | :27:29. | :27:32.
both hand-held receivers on the street as well as control rooms. It | :27:32. | :27:38.
has made a huge difference to policing. We can see the Shard, | :27:38. | :27:44.
which we all recognise, in central London. But you often have to look | :27:44. | :27:48.
at people 's homes if dealing with neighbourhood crime, and that is | :27:48. | :27:52.
noisy. It is noisy, and we accept that. We try to fly at height and be | :27:52. | :27:56.
as neighbourly as we can. We don't get many complaints, but I do | :27:56. | :28:00.
respond personally to all who complain. I explain what we are | :28:00. | :28:04.
doing, and most of the time, they appreciate the work we do. We do | :28:04. | :28:10.
also have a Twitter feed if you would like to follow us. That gives | :28:10. | :28:12.
up-to-date information on what that helicopter is doing hovering over | :28:12. | :28:20.
your house. So you talk to the general public. Thank you so much. | :28:20. | :28:23.
It has been fascinating in the control room, seeing how it is all | :28:23. | :28:25.
put together. Now, having your stuff nicked can be | :28:25. | :28:29.
getting, but most things can be replaced. But imagine if your pet | :28:29. | :28:35.
was stolen. Dog mapping is on the rise. We are joined by Lucy and her | :28:35. | :28:39.
dog or B, who himself was recently dognapped. I am pleased to see him | :28:39. | :28:48.
here, but tell us what happened 's we took Bobby to my parents ' house, | :28:48. | :28:54.
and left him and his brother with them while we were on holiday. | :28:54. | :28:59.
while we were on holiday, they were taken from my parents' garden. | :28:59. | :29:04.
you think they were taken to order. Massive panic for you guys. What did | :29:04. | :29:11.
you do? Firstly, we contacted Dog Lost, who put their profiles on | :29:11. | :29:14.
their website, and they advised us on what to do to get them back. We | :29:14. | :29:20.
informed the police and the vets and dog homes, and there were posters | :29:20. | :29:24.
all around Dorset. We put lots of things on Facebook and we even put a | :29:24. | :29:34.
:29:34. | :29:36. | ||
video on new chip. We also advertised a reward. We said we | :29:36. | :29:42.
would give 2000. You got a phone call a couple of days later, which | :29:42. | :29:47.
was strange. Somebody said, I have just bought two border Terrier | :29:47. | :29:50.
puppies, I have had them for a couple of days, and I have just | :29:50. | :29:55.
figured out they stolen, and they are yours, so I will bring them | :29:55. | :30:01.
back. We found it a bit suspicious, because he had only just found the | :30:01. | :30:05.
tags, and if he had had them for a couple of days, he would have seen | :30:05. | :30:12.
them straightaway. He was keen to get the reward money. It did not | :30:12. | :30:16.
seem like the good Samaritan, perhaps. You have done everything | :30:16. | :30:21.
right, the dog has been micro-chipped, and that is how you | :30:21. | :30:26.
got them back eventually, but this is making cue nervous, because you | :30:26. | :30:33.
do not want to lose him again. does run off, somebody could be | :30:33. | :30:38.
waiting to carry him off again, it makes it not as pleasant and | :30:38. | :30:41.
experience, to note there are people who would just take him without | :30:41. | :30:48.
thinking. The thieves did not even know that one of the dogs had a | :30:48. | :30:53.
heart condition, so needed medication. Yes, he is on | :30:53. | :30:58.
beta-blockers, and he could not access them for four days. Luckily, | :30:58. | :31:05.
he was fine. The main thing, they are back with their owners. He is | :31:05. | :31:15.
:31:15. | :31:15. | ||
having a lovely time! We need everybody's help, the police | :31:15. | :31:19.
do, they are trying to catch a thief who conned his way into an elderly | :31:19. | :31:27.
woman's house. The is some disturbing CCTV. | :31:27. | :31:31.
The man at the door tells the woman she owes him money for work he has | :31:31. | :31:41.
:31:41. | :32:03. | ||
upstairs. He steals her purse and 200, leaving the woman confused and | :32:03. | :32:13.
:32:13. | :32:16. | ||
Paul Murray is leading this investigation. We have got some | :32:16. | :32:21.
clear CCTV, it not only shows the face, but it is good in terms of the | :32:21. | :32:26.
conversation that was recorded. This is down to a neighbour of this | :32:26. | :32:31.
lady, putting a camera in the house, following an incident earlier in the | :32:31. | :32:37.
year, where a man had stolen some money. Are you certain this is the | :32:37. | :32:43.
same man, come back again? Yes, in the similarities of approach. | :32:43. | :32:46.
first occasion, he claimed to have carried out some repairs on the | :32:46. | :32:52.
house, and asked her for some money. The same thing happened on the | :32:52. | :32:56.
second occasion. It is a despicable thing to happen. Let's go through | :32:56. | :33:01.
the description, we have got a picture of him here. Let's run | :33:01. | :33:08.
through that. We think he is middle-aged, white, he was wearing a | :33:08. | :33:13.
grey baseball cap, he is dressed in a grey tracksuit top and bottom is, | :33:13. | :33:20.
and he is wearing sunglasses. a London accent. If you recognise | :33:20. | :33:27.
this man or know anything about him, please get in touch. It is time for | :33:27. | :33:31.
a quick appeal that needs your help. North Wales Police have asked us to | :33:31. | :33:36.
help with a theft that happened in Colwyn Bay. A bronze sculpture was | :33:36. | :33:40.
stolen from the Bay Gallery at the Bay View Centre sometime between 8pm | :33:40. | :33:45.
on the 1st of April and 6am the next day. You can see it here, a solid | :33:45. | :33:51.
runs, two foot tall, unique sculpture, and the owner is | :33:51. | :33:57.
desperate to get it back. It is worth 2000. Did you see anybody | :33:57. | :34:02.
acting suspiciously? It might have been stolen for scrap. Maybe you | :34:02. | :34:10.
have been offered it in terms just like in exchange for cash. Now, more | :34:10. | :34:17.
criminals caught on candid camera. End of November. This man takes a | :34:17. | :34:22.
seat on the top deck of this London bus, heading to Clapham. When he | :34:22. | :34:27.
decides to get off the bus, something catches his eye. He leans | :34:27. | :34:32.
over and takes it off the empty seat. What has he got? Look at his | :34:32. | :34:37.
hand as he takes the stairs. He has picked up someone's wallet. And off | :34:37. | :34:44.
he goes. Who is he? Do you know him? | :34:44. | :34:52.
Norwich, in July last year. One of these men is paying a great deal of | :34:52. | :34:57.
attention to camera equipment worth more than 1000. He is removing the | :34:57. | :35:03.
security tag whilst the other man watches on. Halfway through their | :35:03. | :35:11.
disturbed and they move away. But then, they come back to finish the | :35:11. | :35:15.
job. He picks up the expensive camera and dropped it into his | :35:15. | :35:24.
friend's carrier bag. Let's see that again. Let's catch these two as | :35:24. | :35:30.
quick as a flash. This one is a huge assault, but he | :35:30. | :35:36.
is still needing catching. Watch the man in the hat. Although he is | :35:36. | :35:43.
waiting in line, he is actually here to rob the bank. Now, he is at the | :35:43. | :35:47.
counter, telling the cashier he has got a gun. He leaves with three | :35:47. | :35:51.
grand. Here he is again, months later, at another in Middlesex. He | :35:51. | :35:59.
walks over claims to have a gun, and asks the cash. The same month, | :35:59. | :36:05.
different bank. Again, it is the same story. Altogether, he robbed | :36:05. | :36:12.
eight banks over three months, stealing a total of 11,000. Do you | :36:12. | :36:21.
recognise this bearded bandit? Give us a call. Call us if you recognise | :36:21. | :36:29.
anyone, or text us. You can also e-mail. Remember, you | :36:29. | :36:39.
:36:39. | :36:41. | ||
can always call Crimestoppers It is blackmail next, a horrible | :36:41. | :36:45.
crime, and police in Croydon are hunting for a man who has been | :36:45. | :36:49.
targeting foreign students. He tells them they will be deported unless | :36:49. | :36:54.
they hand over cash. Foreigners who come to study in | :36:54. | :36:57.
London should feel secure in their host city. But to students who | :36:57. | :37:03.
became the Vic terms of blackmail have felt anything but. This is the | :37:03. | :37:13.
man who is doing it, police need to catch him. This man is 22 and comes | :37:13. | :37:17.
from Pakistan. He has been studying for a postgraduate diploma in | :37:18. | :37:23.
business studies since 2011. He is played by an actor, he is too | :37:23. | :37:28.
frightened to be identified. He paid this blackmail almost 1500. If he | :37:28. | :37:34.
had refused to pay up, the Cook told him he would be deported. November | :37:34. | :37:38.
last year, and he was at his part-time job at a butcher shop in | :37:38. | :37:44.
is London. The blackmailer walked in, he said his name was Imran, he | :37:44. | :37:48.
told him that his wallet had been stolen and asked if he could borrow | :37:48. | :37:53.
8 to pay for a bus ticket back home to Sheffield. But it was all a pack | :37:53. | :37:58.
of lies. He believed him, and he lent him the money. Imran then told | :37:58. | :38:02.
him he might be able to get him shifts at the Royal mail, where he | :38:02. | :38:12.
:38:12. | :38:13. | ||
worked. He then left. Days later, he received a call. Imran wanted to | :38:13. | :38:20.
meet him. He had good news about the job. But the venue was outside | :38:20. | :38:24.
Croydon's UK Border Agency offices, and the bombshell, Imran did not | :38:24. | :38:28.
work for the Royal mail after all, he said he worked for the Home | :38:28. | :38:36.
Office, and that he was at risk of deportation. All lies. The way that | :38:36. | :38:40.
the suspect operates, he persuaded the man to meet him outside the | :38:40. | :38:43.
immigration offices, where he told him he was under surveillance, and | :38:43. | :38:47.
if he did not pay him a large amount of money, he would be deported and | :38:47. | :38:53.
arrested. Believing Imran to be genuine, and scared he would be | :38:53. | :38:58.
deported, he withdrew 500 in cash and handed it over. But later that | :38:58. | :39:06.
day, Imran rang again to demand a further 500 to avoid arrest. He was | :39:06. | :39:15.
being blackmailed. He is not the only foreign student based in London | :39:15. | :39:22.
targeted by this man. Police believe he has extorted a huge 9,000 from | :39:22. | :39:28.
another foreign student, spinning the same lies. The blackmailer | :39:28. | :39:34.
continued to pester him over the phone. He handed over a further 450 | :39:34. | :39:38.
before he broke under the pressure and told his friend is Lamott had | :39:38. | :39:43.
been going on. He looked really down, I asked him if there was | :39:43. | :39:48.
anything wrong with him, and he said, there is nothing wrong, but | :39:48. | :39:55.
after that, he started crying. asked him what was up, and he said, | :39:55. | :39:59.
somebody has come to him. The incident has had a profound effect | :40:00. | :40:06.
on him. This man has taken advantage of a vulnerable person who was | :40:06. | :40:09.
worried about how the police or his friends would react when he told | :40:09. | :40:15.
them about what had happened. This has lost a lot of money, and he has | :40:15. | :40:25.
lost his confidence. It has had a massive impact on him. | :40:25. | :40:29.
This man calls himself Imran, what else to you know about him? He is an | :40:29. | :40:34.
Asian male in his late 20s, early 30s, he speaks English, but he has | :40:34. | :40:40.
told his victims he is from Pakistan and he speaks fluent Urdu. He makes | :40:41. | :40:44.
the initial approach in English, but then he speaks to them in Urdu to | :40:44. | :40:50.
win their trust. What can you tell us about the other victim? It is a | :40:50. | :40:55.
student as well, he did not reported to the police for about a month, and | :40:55. | :41:01.
he lost 9,000. They are bona fides students, they have got every right | :41:01. | :41:09.
to be in the country? Yes, they are studying legally. We can hear the | :41:09. | :41:14.
helicopter up ahead, we will see more about that in a moment. In | :41:14. | :41:17.
terms of the officers and the official authorities, they would | :41:17. | :41:24.
never approach anybody in this way, asking for money for a visa? Yes, | :41:24. | :41:27.
this man has targeted vulnerable individuals who have not been aware | :41:27. | :41:31.
of how the system works, they might have been isolated from friends and | :41:31. | :41:36.
family. It has had a terrible impact. You feel there could be | :41:36. | :41:41.
other victims? Yes, I would urge any victims to come forward and tell the | :41:41. | :41:47.
police. Do get in touch if you know. We will find out more about the | :41:47. | :41:52.
helicopter in just a moment. Time for a quick update, yesterday we | :41:52. | :41:57.
featured those terrible sex assaults in Canning Town, police tell us they | :41:58. | :42:02.
are looking into two possible new leads, but they need more calls, so | :42:02. | :42:08.
please do get in touch. We showed CCTV of a woman shopping | :42:08. | :42:15.
with what they believe are stolen cards, police are following up some | :42:15. | :42:21.
brilliant information, so thank you. Where are you going to be tomorrow? | :42:21. | :42:25.
Tomorrow, we are going to be in west London, on the Trail of uninsured | :42:25. | :42:32.
cars and vans, and also, some unbelievable CCTV footage of thugs | :42:32. | :42:36.
who attacked a GP on his own driveway. They need catching, those | :42:36. | :42:43.
guys. Join us tomorrow, good eye. If you want to see our CCTV again, head | :42:43. | :42:51. |
