Today on Crimewatch Roadshow. Love on line. The romance scams that | :00:11. | :00:21.
:00:21. | :00:37. | ||
hello and welcome to Crimewatch Roadshow. We are live and it is our | :00:37. | :00:42.
last day on air, so we are pulling out all the stops to to get as many | :00:42. | :00:47.
criminals behind bars as we can. Here is here is what is on the | :00:47. | :00:51.
programme today. Searching for a soulmate. How online romance scams | :00:51. | :00:56.
are leaving people with more than broken hearts. | :00:56. | :01:03.
Help us catch the knife wielding thugs that robbed two shop workers. | :01:03. | :01:07.
And one too many. We go out on the road with West Mercia Motorway | :01:07. | :01:12.
Police on their summer drink-drive campaign. | :01:12. | :01:16.
Our Roadshow team are at the end of their marathon thrip round the | :01:16. | :01:21.
country and are still in West Mercia. Are are are you today Sian? | :01:21. | :01:25.
Morning, I am at West Mercia force HQ, and we are feeling sad here, | :01:25. | :01:29.
because it is our last day on the road, but it is not over yet, | :01:29. | :01:33.
because today, we are focussing on drink-driving, and I am going to be | :01:33. | :01:36.
trying on these beer goggles to see the effect that drinking alcohol has | :01:36. | :01:41.
on the sense, plus we will see a high tech car that stops you from | :01:41. | :01:46.
drink-driving. Sounds good. First, internet dating. | :01:46. | :01:51.
It is estimated that round half of single people in the UK have been on | :01:51. | :01:54.
line looking for love. With one in five starting a new relationship | :01:54. | :01:58.
that way. But for an increasing number of people, finding love on | :01:58. | :02:03.
line comes at a very high price. We have disguised the identity of this | :02:03. | :02:13.
:02:13. | :02:13. | ||
man to protect his privacy. Finding love is never easy. | :02:13. | :02:18.
52-year-old Dan was keen to meet the woman of his dreams. | :02:18. | :02:23.
I consider myself to be a quiet person, keep myself to myself, I | :02:23. | :02:27.
haven't got a lot of confidence in talking to people. Like millions of | :02:27. | :02:31.
others he turned to the internet for help and registered with several | :02:31. | :02:35.
online dating agencies. I ended up talking to this lady from another | :02:35. | :02:40.
country. For the West Mercia Economic Crime | :02:40. | :02:46.
Unit, this story is a familiar one. The romance scam or dating scam as | :02:46. | :02:50.
it is also known, has probably been going for about five years or so. | :02:50. | :02:56.
One of the first things to look out for is the masking to move away from | :02:56. | :03:03.
the date dating site. Dan's Russian girlfriend did just that, suggesting | :03:03. | :03:06.
they email each other direct after just two weeks. She wanted to know | :03:07. | :03:11.
about me, what I did and the rest of it, that I talked about her and I | :03:11. | :03:16.
asked her question, she said I really want to come to England. She | :03:16. | :03:21.
kept going "I love you, I want to spend the rest of my life with you." | :03:21. | :03:25.
It sounded genuine. She sent me photographs of her and she was a | :03:25. | :03:29.
very attractive lady, I thought I have pulled a good one here. | :03:29. | :03:34.
Of course, the photographs Dan was sent were probably of a completely | :03:34. | :03:40.
innocent woman who has no idea her images are being used. | :03:40. | :03:44.
The photographs they use are usually photographs that have been stolen | :03:44. | :03:48.
from other websites. They are probably from glamour site, they are | :03:48. | :03:51.
models. -- sites. | :03:51. | :03:54.
After a month of daily correspondence, the new couple | :03:54. | :04:00.
decided to meet. With Christmas fast approaching, it | :04:00. | :04:03.
seemed an ideal time to get together. | :04:03. | :04:08.
But her trip to the UK wouldn't come cheap, and it was Dan who would have | :04:08. | :04:15.
to foot the bill. 600. She said I will sort the documents | :04:15. | :04:21.
out and the rest. I said "All right." She told me how much it was | :04:21. | :04:26.
going to cost. She said "Are you prepared to contribute towards it? | :04:26. | :04:31.
Buy me the air tick? " I said all right and that was it. So eager for | :04:31. | :04:36.
love Dan didn't hesitate to pay the bill. 600 for plane tickets. | :04:37. | :04:40.
is when it starts and by that time, you know, the stridge thinks they | :04:40. | :04:47.
are in a relationship, and you know, all commonsense sort of seems to go | :04:47. | :04:52.
out of the window. All systems go, Dan prepared to meet his true love. | :04:52. | :04:57.
But then an email arrived from her, saying she had been arrested at the | :04:57. | :05:01.
airport for having tablets in her bag. She needed 6,000 before the | :05:01. | :05:10.
police would release her. Gl "I'm in prison, it is bad. ." You | :05:10. | :05:14.
believe them. You start living on dreams. Made Christmas an | :05:14. | :05:18.
anticlimax. After the disappointment of | :05:18. | :05:22.
Christmas there was better news. Dan's on online girlfriend decided | :05:22. | :05:27.
to sell her flat. She should be able to return Dan's hard-earned cash, | :05:27. | :05:33.
and also more importantly, they could be together. | :05:33. | :05:38.
But then, another hitch. Sorry I have to tell you I can't | :05:38. | :05:41.
withdraw the money because I haven't paid the taxes on it, which worked | :05:41. | :05:47.
out at 2300. Something like that. I should have workeren up and smelled | :05:47. | :05:51.
the coffee then. Doe -- woken up. But the requests | :05:51. | :06:00.
for cash kept coming. I need money for traveller's cheques. It is going | :06:00. | :06:05.
to cost for a visa, medical fee, I can't wait to be with you, it will | :06:05. | :06:10.
be worth it my love. Dan had now invested quite a considerable amount | :06:10. | :06:16.
of money in this relationship, and only had 300 emails to show for it. | :06:16. | :06:20.
The next message would leave him reeling. She got a passport, the | :06:20. | :06:26.
visas, the ticket, she was in town and she said she had plenty of time | :06:26. | :06:30.
to spend. I am going to the museum. She went to the museum, she said she | :06:30. | :06:35.
knocked a vase over, and this vase was going to cost 2,000. Then, the | :06:35. | :06:40.
penny did drop. It is easy for people to sort of | :06:40. | :06:45.
say, "Silly, they deserve what they get, the rest of it." I don't follow | :06:45. | :06:49.
that. These people are professional, they are part of organised crime | :06:49. | :06:54.
groups, and they are very good at what they do. Extremely good. | :06:54. | :06:58.
the one that went to the bank. I am the person that did the | :06:58. | :07:02.
transactions, so I only have myself to blame. It was my money, my | :07:02. | :07:12.
:07:12. | :07:13. | ||
mistake. It cost me about 16,000. And Robin Longmore is we me now. Dan | :07:13. | :07:17.
certainly isn't alone in being conned, is he? No, he is not sadly. | :07:17. | :07:21.
There are many people out there who get caught in this time type of | :07:21. | :07:25.
scam. It is frightening. Because what type of money are we talking | :07:25. | :07:29.
about? We are talking serious money. It is difficult to put a figure on | :07:29. | :07:34.
it because few people come forward to report these matters through the | :07:34. | :07:39.
embarrassment of being caught. have got some statistic, between | :07:39. | :07:43.
August and January Action Fraud say victims were conned out of 5 | :07:43. | :07:47.
million. That seems extraordinary to me. What do you make of it? . | :07:47. | :07:51.
not surprised. I think that is probably a Conservative figure. It | :07:51. | :07:56.
could be more than that. We don't get a lot of reports, its is through | :07:56. | :07:59.
intelligence-led police, we identify these victims of these type of | :07:59. | :08:04.
crime. Who are the victims here in who gets caught out by scams? | :08:04. | :08:08.
the victims tend to be from the age range of about 35 up to about 80 | :08:08. | :08:12.
years of age. It is not just males or female, it is a mixture of both. | :08:12. | :08:18.
We tend to find the men get scammed by purported beauties from Russia, | :08:18. | :08:24.
and these are carried out by males usually, out in Russia or eastern | :08:24. | :08:29.
European countries. But the ladies tend to get scammed by people from | :08:29. | :08:32.
West Africa, predominantly Nigeria or Ghana. Very often the pictures | :08:32. | :08:36.
they are looking at will be of white British male, or American army | :08:37. | :08:41.
soldier, something of that nature. So your advice to people using them? | :08:41. | :08:46.
Follow your head not your heart. Always make inquiries as best you | :08:46. | :08:52.
can, ask them to go on line, and on Skype or something of that nature | :08:52. | :08:57.
and wear a yellow hat or hold a banana or something of that nature | :08:57. | :09:02.
so you know who you are talking to. Let us hope people are listening to | :09:02. | :09:07.
that advice. Now, it is CCTV time, we will press | :09:07. | :09:10.
play and if you recognise anyone we will need you to pause for thought | :09:10. | :09:18.
and give us a call. March this year in Telford. This man | :09:18. | :09:22.
wearing a big scarf covering his face has come into a petrol station | :09:22. | :09:27.
shop. He makes his way over to the till. He has got a knife. And tells | :09:27. | :09:31.
the shop assistant he wants cash. But he is told he can't open the | :09:31. | :09:37.
till unless he buys something. So, the helpful thief passes him a | :09:37. | :09:42.
packet of chewing gum. With the till finally open he helps himself to | :09:42. | :09:47.
200 and legs it. If you know anything about this incident, please | :09:47. | :09:57.
:09:57. | :09:58. | ||
call us. These guys are here for shopping but | :09:58. | :10:03.
this supermarket isn't going to get any money off them. They trail down | :10:03. | :10:09.
the aisle, one after the other. One of them helps himself to some fruit. | :10:09. | :10:13.
Another steals a bottle of alcohol. But when a member of staff comes | :10:13. | :10:19.
over, they make a sharp exit. They are back the next month, and | :10:19. | :10:22.
this time they steal some more booze. | :10:22. | :10:26.
And they are at it again a few weeks later. They take a bottle of pop, | :10:26. | :10:33.
and some meat. Planning a dinner party lads? Two of | :10:33. | :10:38.
them make yet another visit in March. One of them selects some | :10:38. | :10:42.
beer. The other takes a couple of bottles of wine. | :10:42. | :10:46.
They are followed out of the shop by a member of staff. Over the four | :10:47. | :10:51.
month period they take 900 worth of stuff. | :10:51. | :11:00.
Do you know any of these men? London. April this year. | :11:00. | :11:05.
An up market shop in Piccadilly. These guys head for the coats. Not | :11:05. | :11:11.
to buy, but to help themselves. One of them opens the bag ready. But | :11:11. | :11:14.
they are disturbed. Once the coast is clear, they get | :11:14. | :11:19.
straight back to business. This time, they get the coats, worth | :11:19. | :11:24.
a total of 1200, in the bag. Then, they leave the shop | :11:24. | :11:28.
separately. Come on, don't let them get away | :11:28. | :11:34.
with it. You know what to do. If you recognise anyone there make | :11:34. | :11:41.
sure you pick up the phone. You can call us. Remember Calls are free | :11:41. | :11:44.
from most landlines. Some networks and mobile operators will charge for | :11:44. | :11:49.
these calls. Text us. | :11:49. | :11:52.
That space is important, if you don't put it in your message won't | :11:52. | :11:58.
get through. Texts will be charged at standard message rate. You can | :11:58. | :12:04.
email us, the address is on the screen. | :12:04. | :12:09.
Next, how one laid night shift as at a convenience store turned into a | :12:09. | :12:14.
nightmare. We were doing our normal tidying up. | :12:14. | :12:18.
Suddenly this man was in front of me. Open the till. Give me the | :12:18. | :12:24.
money. He wants the money and he has a knife. I couldn't believe what | :12:24. | :12:34.
:12:34. | :12:35. | ||
just happened. In Shrewsbury in February of this | :12:35. | :12:40.
year, Christine Collins was at work in her local shop. She has worked at | :12:40. | :12:44.
the shop for over seven years, and lives in the local area. | :12:44. | :12:49.
It is handy for me. Everybody is nice, the customer, the regulars are | :12:49. | :12:56.
nice. Get on well with all of them. Sundays are quiet, and we were | :12:56. | :13:03.
getting ready to tidy up a bit, because we shut at 9.00 on a Sunday. | :13:03. | :13:06.
While Christine was out front her colleague Jo was in the back. | :13:06. | :13:11.
Because of her fear of reprisal, we have changed her name, and hidden | :13:11. | :13:16.
her identity. Jo was in the stock room getting stuff to put out on the | :13:16. | :13:21.
shelves because we weren't busy with customers. | :13:21. | :13:27.
But their peaceful Sunday late shift was about to be disturbed. | :13:27. | :13:32.
I happened to look up at the cameras which is automatic when you hear the | :13:32. | :13:37.
door go. That is when I saw somebody come in, all hooded up. Give me the | :13:37. | :13:43.
money, give me the money now. Suddenly this man was in front of | :13:43. | :13:48.
me. Get it open, now. Come on. Hurry up. I could hardly see his face, he | :13:48. | :13:53.
said "Give me the money." He got hold of me, he had a knife. He | :13:53. | :13:56.
leaned over straight away and grabbed hold of Chris, that is when | :13:56. | :14:02.
I shot out into the shop. I had no plan at all. My main concern all the | :14:02. | :14:12.
:14:12. | :14:13. | ||
time was Chris. I was shaking, I could not open my till. His next | :14:13. | :14:17.
move was to get behind the counter to get his hands on the cash. | :14:17. | :14:23.
backed into the corner and wanted to stay well away from him. He'd used | :14:23. | :14:30.
his blade to prise open the till to help himself to the day's takings. | :14:30. | :14:37.
He got the money, and I press the panic alarm. I could not believe | :14:37. | :14:45.
what had happened. Chris was very shook up. She was very frightened. | :14:45. | :14:50.
The minute he left, she collapsed on the floor. She put her arms around | :14:50. | :15:00.
:15:00. | :15:04. | ||
me and help me. The panic, the pain, it hurts so much. Can I have an | :15:05. | :15:14.
:15:15. | :15:22. | ||
still struggling to come to terms with this vicious attack. I could | :15:22. | :15:32.
:15:32. | :15:34. | ||
still be serving him. I cannot place him, there are two eyes, a nose, and | :15:34. | :15:37.
he could still be coming in the shop, and I could still be serving | :15:37. | :15:45.
him. I am not the same. I do not feel the same any more. But it is my | :15:45. | :15:50.
job. I have been there a long time, and I like it. I cannot let somebody | :15:50. | :16:00.
:16:00. | :16:06. | ||
Take us through a description of this man. We are looking for a white | :16:06. | :16:13.
male in his late teens, early 20s, five foot ten to five foot 11, he | :16:13. | :16:23.
has a pale, peachy complexion, with a pointed nose. What was he | :16:23. | :16:28.
wearing? A great or green hooded top, underneath which another white | :16:28. | :16:36.
hooded top. The top is pulled tightly around his face, you can see | :16:36. | :16:40.
parts of his facial features. He is wearing black Adidas tracksuit | :16:40. | :16:45.
bottoms, which have three White stripes three quarters down the leg. | :16:45. | :16:52.
You think he left on a bike? Yes, on a skinny type dog mountain bike, | :16:52. | :16:56.
with straight handlebars, we believe it went towards Coniston Road | :16:56. | :17:01.
injuries brief. What about the nice? This is similar to the one | :17:01. | :17:08.
that was used. A three inch blade, the handle was not seen, because it | :17:08. | :17:15.
was tucked away. As it is the last show in the | :17:15. | :17:19.
series, let's have a look back at some of the faces that need that | :17:19. | :17:24.
final push to help police track them down or stop starting with this guy, | :17:24. | :17:31.
he may now be calling himself by another name, as he uses aliases, | :17:31. | :17:35.
including Anthony Stevenson Wilson and Lee Anthony Wilson. He was | :17:35. | :17:40.
handed a sentence in 2004 for a series of robberies. He was released | :17:41. | :17:45.
early on licence but is now wanted back in jail. He is known to have | :17:45. | :17:50.
links to Manchester and Spain. This man is next, 23-year-old Mohammed | :17:50. | :17:55.
Islam, he is wanted by officers in Hampshire with sexual assaults's | :17:55. | :18:00.
with connection with sexual assaults on women in the area. He speaks with | :18:00. | :18:07.
a Bangladeshi accent, and he carries a backpack. Police in Northern | :18:07. | :18:14.
Ireland need your help to find this lady, she may now be using a number | :18:14. | :18:18.
of different names, including Doctor Jules Watson, Julia Macaw, Celia | :18:18. | :18:24.
McGoogan or just Celia Holmes. She has been missing since 2010, when | :18:24. | :18:28.
she was charged with defrauding a man out of 18,000 by pretending to | :18:28. | :18:34.
be an American millionaire. She failed to appear in court. She is | :18:34. | :18:38.
known to have connections across Ireland and in Bedford. Finally, | :18:38. | :18:42.
Charles Dhillon has served seven years for raping a woman at | :18:42. | :18:45.
gunpoint, he is now on the sex offenders register, but he has | :18:45. | :18:49.
failed to notify police of his current whereabouts. Officers think | :18:49. | :18:55.
he is a threat to the public, 5'5" tall and believed to be in the | :18:55. | :19:05.
London area, possibly pilfered. Pick up the phone. The context us. You | :19:05. | :19:14.
can also e-mail us. Can you help us find a light | :19:14. | :19:17.
fingered jewellery thief and his shopping companion, caught | :19:17. | :19:23.
red-handed on CCTV? These two men saunter into a | :19:23. | :19:27.
jewellery shop in the middle of Shrewsbury Town at around 1130 on | :19:27. | :19:33.
the 29th of March. Then, they home in on one particular display | :19:33. | :19:36.
cabinet. They asked the assistant to show them a pair of cheap pal | :19:36. | :19:42.
earrings. Whilst one man holds her attention, the other reaches over | :19:42. | :19:48.
her fate and steals a platinum and diamond ring worth 25,000. Then, | :19:48. | :19:54.
they stop to pay for the earrings before strolling out of the store. | :19:54. | :20:04.
Unbelievable. Tell me about the ring. It is quite distinctive, it | :20:04. | :20:11.
has got a large central time and, -- a large central diamond, the size of | :20:11. | :20:19.
a 5p. There are diamonds around the shoulders, and a platinum ring. | :20:19. | :20:23.
was an audacious theft, what did you know about the man? He is about five | :20:23. | :20:29.
foot ten, stocky, short, dark hair that was not styled, he was wearing | :20:29. | :20:36.
blue jeans and had a puffer jacket on. Wasn't he looking through a wad | :20:36. | :20:41.
of money? Yes, he had a lot of money with him, to show he could pay for | :20:41. | :20:46.
something, tried not to be suspicious. The other man was more | :20:46. | :20:51.
distinctive, an Asian male again, five foot eight, medium build, he | :20:51. | :20:55.
had styled black hair and a distinctive style beard that | :20:55. | :21:05.
:21:05. | :21:07. | ||
followed his jawline. Still to come, over the limit, we | :21:07. | :21:10.
are on duty with the motorway police, cracking down on drink | :21:10. | :21:16.
drivers. It is Friday, so Jackie is back with | :21:16. | :21:22.
some more results. You may remember last year we appealed for | :21:22. | :21:25.
information about some burglaries at some of market apartments in | :21:25. | :21:29.
Battersea. We had tens of thousands of pounds worth of jewellery | :21:30. | :21:35.
stolen. We showed some really clear CCTV pictures and reconstructed what | :21:35. | :21:42.
happened. February last year, and Sandra | :21:42. | :21:46.
Burrows went to work as usual. It'll be chino that two burglars were | :21:46. | :21:51.
about to steal her life's possessions. They were seen | :21:51. | :21:54.
approaching her upmarket block of apartments. One pressed the buzzers, | :21:54. | :21:58.
the other made sure he was not leaving any fingerprints. They were | :21:58. | :22:06.
smartly dressed to fit in, so nobody would ask questions, they would put | :22:06. | :22:12.
a lot of thought into it, and they were well organised. They made their | :22:12. | :22:15.
way up to the flat on the sixth floor and forced their way in. | :22:15. | :22:20.
Stealing more than 11,000 worth of treasured possessions and heirlooms. | :22:20. | :22:30.
:22:30. | :22:31. | ||
Ransacking every room. Very angry with them, that they think they can | :22:31. | :22:35.
take these things and claim on their insurance and it will be fine, but | :22:35. | :22:40.
the loss of the sentimental items, they are not replaceable. | :22:40. | :22:45.
burglars wanted more. They moved next door, where they stole over | :22:45. | :22:50.
2000 worth of possessions. To add insult to injury, they also took the | :22:50. | :22:57.
owner's car, caught on CCTV driving out of the underground car park. | :22:57. | :23:00.
They go down the left, into the garage, see the anti-space, and it | :23:00. | :23:08.
was like, the final hit. But Sandra decided to fight back. She printed | :23:08. | :23:12.
off leaflets with photos of the burglars for her neighbours, and as | :23:12. | :23:18.
a result, she found out the thieves had struck again. CCTV showed the | :23:18. | :23:21.
burglars approaching nearby apartments and a game in the garage | :23:21. | :23:28.
area. This time, they escaped with 150,000 worth of jewellery. But we | :23:28. | :23:36.
were about to end their spree. It is such a horrible crime. How | :23:36. | :23:40.
were the offenders identified? had loads of calls from our viewers, | :23:40. | :23:44.
and one of them recognised both men, which led to the arrest of a couple | :23:44. | :23:54.
:23:54. | :23:58. | ||
of Essex lads. Larry Alan Cooley and Adam Jury. The names were given, and | :23:58. | :24:03.
they -- and one of them was in prison at the time. Yes, for an | :24:03. | :24:09.
unrelated events -- offence, and he saw himself on the television in his | :24:09. | :24:14.
cell, and he was seriously spooked. Once the police had his name, they | :24:14. | :24:20.
went to see him, and they tracked down Adam Jury, who was working as a | :24:20. | :24:26.
plumber. A successful prosecution's they both pleaded guilty, Larry Alan | :24:26. | :24:32.
Cooley sentenced to 18 months, Adam Jury to two years. There were a lot | :24:32. | :24:37.
of sentimental items stolen, were any of them recovered? Sadly, no. | :24:37. | :24:43.
Sandra Burrows is the heroine of this case, she put a lot of personal | :24:43. | :24:50.
effort into catching these guys. Actually, she was delighted with the | :24:50. | :24:54.
results. If we had not gone to Crimewatch | :24:54. | :24:56.
Roadshow, they would not have caught them, because the police have no | :24:56. | :25:01.
other leads, other than these fantastic pictures that we had on | :25:01. | :25:07.
CCTV. Having said that on TV, we could get a result. I was happy they | :25:07. | :25:12.
caught up with them, because the biggest thing was knowing that they | :25:12. | :25:16.
were still out there and they were going to do this to other people. I | :25:16. | :25:19.
was happy they caught them as a result of the show. | :25:19. | :25:24.
A small amount of closure for the brave victim. You are going to be | :25:24. | :25:29.
back later to give us some results for the whole series. Let's go to | :25:29. | :25:35.
shone. Drink-driving, we all know it is | :25:35. | :25:39.
wrong, yet every year, hundreds are killed on the road by drivers | :25:39. | :25:44.
flouting the law. We went out with police officers in forcing a | :25:44. | :25:53.
nationwide summer campaign to crack down on drink drivers. | :25:53. | :25:57.
The central motorway police group looks after more than 400 miles of | :25:57. | :26:03.
one of the busiest road networks in Britain. We have just passed to | :26:03. | :26:07.
emergency vehicles, and... , solid looks like we might be the first | :26:07. | :26:14.
officers on the scene. Today, as well as patrolling the motorway, | :26:14. | :26:18.
these policemen are on the lookout for drivers who have been drinking. | :26:18. | :26:21.
They have just been alerted to a road traffic accident on the M6 toll | :26:21. | :26:27.
road outside Birmingham. The vehicle has left the carriageway, the | :26:27. | :26:30.
paramedics are working with the patient, so the priority is the | :26:30. | :26:36.
patient. Once we get the go-ahead, we can breathalyse the driver to | :26:36. | :26:42.
make sure there is no drink or drugs involved. I am just going to do a | :26:42. | :26:46.
breathalyser. Have you had this before? You can hold the machine, | :26:46. | :26:54.
blow as hard as you can. Keep going. Brilliant, thank you. That is all | :26:54. | :27:03.
done. It is a zero, you have passed. I will pass you on to an officer. | :27:03. | :27:07.
Both the driver and passenger escaped serious injury. But drivers | :27:07. | :27:11.
who do have alcohol in their system are up to six times more likely to | :27:11. | :27:16.
die in a crash. It is a miracle no one was killed by this drunk driver | :27:16. | :27:23.
will stop in July of last year, he drove his lorry ten miles up the M6 | :27:23. | :27:29.
with his lights off, going the wrong way. He was jailed for eight months | :27:29. | :27:34.
and is qualified from driving for three years after proving to be more | :27:34. | :27:39.
than twice over the legal limit. Back on the road, the summer | :27:39. | :27:42.
drink-driving campaign has already stopped thousands of drivers. These | :27:42. | :27:49.
were all under the limit. But a van has caught the officers' attention. | :27:49. | :27:53.
We have spotted a van travelling at speed, we will speak to the driver, | :27:53. | :28:03.
:28:03. | :28:04. | ||
see if they have had a drink. A big, deep breath in, give it some money. | :28:04. | :28:12.
You have failed the roadside breath test. You are under arrest. Having | :28:12. | :28:16.
failed a breathalyser, this driver will now be taken to the police | :28:16. | :28:21.
station, where he will be tested again, more accurately. If he fails | :28:21. | :28:26.
there, he is in real trouble. Drink-driving is a very serious | :28:26. | :28:31.
offence, the consequences, especially for him, will be very | :28:31. | :28:37.
serious, he needs his fun for his job, it is his livelihood. If he | :28:37. | :28:43.
fails at the station, he will lose everything. Anyone caught driving | :28:43. | :28:50.
over the limit faces up to six months in prison and a 5,000 fine. | :28:50. | :28:52.
But the consequences of drink-driving can be far worse than | :28:52. | :29:01.
that. Kelly was beautiful. Not only was | :29:01. | :29:04.
she very pretty, she was also very beautiful inside. She was happy, | :29:04. | :29:12.
smiley, had a good sense of humour, the perfect daughter. She was my | :29:12. | :29:18.
baby. Kelly was a 20-year-old out in a car | :29:18. | :29:20.
with her friend, who had been drinking. | :29:20. | :29:28.
When the car crashed, the driver survived. But Kelly did not. | :29:28. | :29:37.
When the police knocked at the door, you just, you just know. There is | :29:37. | :29:41.
bad news, two police officers stood there. They start saying Kelly's | :29:41. | :29:51.
been involved in an accident. into that room... I still see | :29:51. | :29:59.
Kelly's face. Sheer terror. On her feature, her beautiful eyes | :29:59. | :30:09.
:30:09. | :30:14. | ||
Back in the police station, the driver arrested for failing his | :30:14. | :30:20.
roadside breath test is about to face his moment of truth. | :30:20. | :30:26.
Deep breath. Keep going, keep going, keep going. Keep going. | :30:26. | :30:32.
That's it. This is the calibrated breath test procedure we conduct at | :30:32. | :30:37.
the station. It is more accurate than the roadside which gives you an | :30:37. | :30:41.
initial reading, really, however, this is the most accurate you can | :30:41. | :30:51.
get, so, yeah, see what happens with this. The legal limit is 35ml of | :30:51. | :30:56.
alcohol for every 100ml of breath. This driver has come in at 27. He | :30:56. | :31:04.
has passed but it is a closical. is very scary. Driving is my job, I | :31:04. | :31:08.
am a carpenter by trade. It is an eye-opener for me. I will be more | :31:08. | :31:11.
careful. I don't want to go through this again. I certainly don't. I | :31:11. | :31:16.
want to keep my license, I want to have a clean license. Simple as | :31:16. | :31:20.
that. The driver is released without charge. | :31:20. | :31:25.
The officers are back out on patrol. As a traffic officer, we are looking | :31:25. | :31:28.
for drink-drivers so it is not like, you know, we only do it when the | :31:29. | :31:32.
campaign is on. We are constantly looking for anyone that is | :31:32. | :31:42.
:31:42. | :31:42. | ||
drink-driving. The very sad consequences of | :31:42. | :31:49.
drink-drive, and I am joined by PC Dal Nijjar. Dal, you have brought | :31:49. | :31:53.
beer goggles, what are these for? That is right. This is a beer | :31:53. | :31:57.
goggle, it is an educational thing we use, for members of the public, | :31:57. | :32:00.
to experience what it is like to be a drink-driver, if they have had a | :32:01. | :32:05.
drink and get into a car and start driving. It is very powerful. Which | :32:05. | :32:11.
is what we want. It gets the message home and people appreciate the | :32:11. | :32:15.
consequences of drink-driving if they ever did. Let us try it and see | :32:15. | :32:19.
what it is like putting them on. I am going o to go on to this white | :32:19. | :32:24.
line and follow it. So get on the line, what exactly do I need to do? | :32:24. | :32:28.
Just, basically walk in a straight line, toe to toe. If you start | :32:28. | :32:38.
walking in a straight line. It feels very strange. I feel disorientated, | :32:38. | :32:44.
and quite woozey, I don't know how I am doing here, any clues? Am I on | :32:44. | :32:48.
this line, it feels like I am. Unfortunately you are nowhere near | :32:48. | :32:52.
the line, you are not walking in a straight line. I am right off the | :32:52. | :32:57.
line. That is right.Fascinating to see, I thought I was walk on the | :32:57. | :33:02.
line. My sense of direction and gravity has gone all the police, | :33:02. | :33:06.
people still get into a car when they have had a drink. Too much to | :33:06. | :33:10.
drink. That is right. We have small percentage of people that still want | :33:10. | :33:14.
to get in a car and drive. They will think they are OK. They are only | :33:14. | :33:18.
going am to B and unfortunately we see the other side when we go to the | :33:18. | :33:23.
accident, where it could be serious. You do. -- A to B. Thank you for | :33:23. | :33:26.
bringing these along. Back to you, Rav. | :33:26. | :33:31.
Now, last week, we made an appeal on behalf of the Met police about a | :33:31. | :33:35.
series of sex attacks in East London. They urgently need to catch | :33:35. | :33:38.
this man. They believe he has been sexually assaulting women in the | :33:38. | :33:41.
Canning Town area, usually as they are letling themselves into their | :33:41. | :33:44.
properties late at night. -- letting. Now detectives believe he | :33:44. | :33:50.
struck again. This is the sixth attack and it happened on Wednesday | :33:50. | :33:54.
June 19th. A week after the previous attack. The Met have released CCTV | :33:54. | :33:57.
footage of what happened before the assault. The victim, here onnen | :33:57. | :34:02.
right, who had been visiting a friend in Cundy Road is seen loading | :34:02. | :34:07.
her ka with luggage before heading home. The suspect walks past and has | :34:07. | :34:10.
obviously noticed her. He is seen lurking round before he walks in | :34:10. | :34:15.
front testify car. And there we get a better look at him. Just minutes | :34:15. | :34:18.
after that CCTV footage was filmed, the victim was about to buzz herself | :34:18. | :34:23.
back into the build, when the man sexually assaulted her, he needs to | :34:23. | :34:27.
be stopped and if you know anything please ring the number on your | :34:27. | :34:31.
screen now. Now, focus your attention, it is | :34:31. | :34:35.
time to look at a few more Crookes caught on CCTV. | :34:35. | :34:40.
-- Crookes. The bookies in Epsom March this | :34:40. | :34:44.
year, these two men are in a hurry, the jackpot they want is behind the | :34:44. | :34:49.
till. They start threatening the terrified staff. Forcing them to get | :34:49. | :34:53.
on the floor. One of the men heads to the cash room and fills his | :34:53. | :34:56.
plastic bag with money. As the other one keeps watch. | :34:56. | :35:00.
Then they carry out a thorough search of the tills. | :35:00. | :35:05.
All together, they steal over 3,000, before making their escape. | :35:05. | :35:09.
The whole raid takes less than 90 seconds. | :35:09. | :35:19.
They might have their faces covered, but do you know them? Surrey now and | :35:19. | :35:23.
it is long past closing time at this restaurant in Richmond. Look at this | :35:23. | :35:28.
man raiding the till. He helps himself to 60. He manages to look | :35:28. | :35:34.
straight at the camera, giving us a view of his face. Thanks mate. | :35:34. | :35:39.
Police say he also went on to steal three bottles of champagne worth | :35:39. | :35:47.
200. If you know this champagne Charlie, get in touch. | :35:47. | :35:51.
These men are hanging round the gaming machines at a bingo hall in | :35:51. | :35:54.
Norwich. But they are not gambling, they are looking like they are | :35:54. | :35:58.
casing the joint. According to police, they are | :35:58. | :36:01.
putting stickers on some of the machines. | :36:01. | :36:05.
Then, three different men arrive in the early hours, police think they | :36:05. | :36:10.
are all working as a team. They are trying really hard to keep out of | :36:10. | :36:12.
sight, but nothing gets past the cameras. | :36:12. | :36:17.
Here they are, using crowbars to get the money out of the machines. | :36:17. | :36:24.
On to the change machine next. In total, get away with 4,500 and | :36:25. | :36:27.
cause nearly 50,000 worth of damage. | :36:28. | :36:34.
They have got some nerve, they even take a break before leaving. Police | :36:34. | :36:38.
are keen to speak to the two men who were seen at the beginning as well | :36:38. | :36:43.
as the three who broke in. Look at the faces, do you know them? If you | :36:43. | :36:49.
can help give us a call. Or send us a text. | :36:49. | :36:56.
Or you can email us instead. Remember, if you want to stay | :36:56. | :37:01.
anonymous you can call Crimestoppers. | :37:01. | :37:07.
Sian? We have seen mobile breathalysers in action but you can | :37:07. | :37:12.
get them fitted into cars like these. Wayne Walton is with me to | :37:12. | :37:16.
tell me about it. We are going to try this straight away so I can use | :37:16. | :37:22.
it. I have to try and start this car which I am do doing, nothing is | :37:22. | :37:28.
happening because we have to do the breath test You are not allowed to | :37:28. | :37:31.
start it until you give a clear breath sample. Hopefully, that will | :37:31. | :37:38.
work. OK, it is saying it is analysing, who uses this kit? | :37:38. | :37:42.
national coach companies will use it this haulage companies will use it. | :37:42. | :37:46.
To ensure they have sober drivers in their vehicles. It is being used at | :37:46. | :37:52.
the moment, where did the idea come from? Originally it came across from | :37:52. | :37:56.
America, it was used wildly on the Continent as well these days and we | :37:56. | :38:01.
are playing catch up. It is a sophisticated piece of kit. Tell us | :38:01. | :38:06.
more about it? OK, so it won't allow do you start the engine, you can get | :38:06. | :38:14.
a reporting system on the back of it, that will show... Pass there. | :38:14. | :38:18.
And do a report for big businesses that want to see people are using | :38:18. | :38:22.
the vehicle properly. Right. I have put some mouth wash | :38:22. | :38:26.
into my mouth now, because that is going to simulate as though I have | :38:26. | :38:30.
got alcohol on my breath. We will give that test a quick go to see | :38:30. | :38:39.
whether it shows that is a fail. Thank you. | :38:39. | :38:48.
Blow for a longer period of time. So sophisticated kit this, because if | :38:48. | :38:52.
you don't do it right it comes up straight away and tells you, I will | :38:53. | :38:56.
show there is a fail on that. And then there is no way that this car | :38:57. | :39:02.
will be going anywhere. It will not start. Thank you for taking us | :39:02. | :39:06.
through that, fascinating stuff. Rav, back to you. As it is our last | :39:06. | :39:12.
show Jacqui is back to tell us how we have been doing. It has been | :39:12. | :39:16.
busy? Yes, we have had loads of calls. All the information has been | :39:16. | :39:22.
handed over to police, arrests are being made, Protestant's being | :39:22. | :39:26.
recovered and strong new lines of inquiry have been taken on so it is | :39:26. | :39:32.
fantastic as ever. Ewe have had good feedback on the advice we are giving | :39:32. | :39:37.
out It ask heartening to know how they have embracing the tips we have | :39:37. | :39:41.
been give, con people who have been pretending to be bank employees and | :39:41. | :39:49.
conning people into giving out PIN number, even Dyson repair men, | :39:49. | :39:52.
distraction burglaries involving people purporting to be gas people, | :39:52. | :39:56.
all those sorts of things are easy to stick in your mind and prevent | :39:56. | :39:59.
crime for the future. For me prevention is better than cure, so | :39:59. | :40:03.
if we can stop a crime happening that is a massive plus for everyone | :40:03. | :40:07.
concerned is. Great to be back and nice to be working with you one more | :40:07. | :40:11.
time. For now, let us go back to Sian. | :40:11. | :40:15.
We have had a brilliant time with our four weeks on the road, we have | :40:15. | :40:21.
been through nine police force, covered 1200 mile, we featured | :40:21. | :40:26.
parrots, horses and dogs, and we have been on land and on the sea. | :40:26. | :40:31.
Here are our highlights. Welcome to Crimewatch Roadshow. | :40:31. | :40:35.
We are on a mission to tackle the kinds of crime that could happen to | :40:35. | :40:39.
any of us. Some suspected criminals are on the | :40:39. | :40:45.
loose in the countryside near Preston. Today, it is up to these | :40:45. | :40:50.
dogs to apprehend the suspects. We will have a hands on free view of | :40:51. | :40:56.
the police car on the future, and Rav, you have gadget envy. The | :40:56. | :41:02.
Channel Tunnel is a massive policing challenge, it 140 metres beneath the | :41:02. | :41:07.
sea. As you can hear I have feathered friends here in the | :41:07. | :41:11.
studio. Take a look at this. No mobile phones in those day, that is | :41:11. | :41:16.
how they would be getting all their communications. | :41:16. | :41:22.
What do I do? Put your right food on the pad. A lot of information you | :41:22. | :41:28.
can get from that. There are three helicopters based here, on call to | :41:28. | :41:35.
police London behind me, 24 hours a day. | :41:35. | :41:38.
Quick update for you, detectives in North Yorkshire tell us they have | :41:38. | :41:43.
arrested one of the wanted faces we showed you earlier in the week. | :41:43. | :41:47.
officers are joining forces to tackle every aspect of road crime. | :41:47. | :41:51.
Imagine if it was your pet that was stolen. Dognapping in particular is | :41:51. | :41:56.
on the rise. I am with the longest serving police | :41:56. | :42:01.
horse here. Sian, I hear you have been up to no good in Northampton? | :42:01. | :42:06.
am being checked into custody. Jacqui, welcome back. Yes, they have | :42:06. | :42:12.
found a clip. Six faces for you, they are wanted for serious crimes | :42:12. | :42:17.
throughout the UK. I still have that suit. I have that uniform somewhere. | :42:17. | :42:23.
Thank you for watching. Take care. And what a month we have had. A huge | :42:24. | :42:28.
thank you to police forces for hosting us and to all of you for | :42:29. | :42:33.
letting us tell your story, we hope we have made a huge difference, from | :42:33. | :42:38.
all of us on the Roadshow team, bye. Can't we do it all again? That is | :42:38. | :42:41.
everything for this series, our phone lines are open for another | :42:41. | :42:47.
week, so there is still time to help if you can. We will be on the | :42:47. | :42:50.
website for another week and we will leave you with one last look at some | :42:50. | :42:53. |
