It's Friday, we're live for the last time this | :00:00. | :00:09.
With your help we can put some more baddies behind bars. | :00:10. | :00:14.
Today, the have-a-go pensioner who sent two | :00:15. | :00:16.
I wasn't prepared to hit anybody but I can defend myself. | :00:17. | :00:29.
In my sock. more than they bargained for. | :00:30. | :00:53.
more help from you this morning to crack unsolved crimes. | :00:54. | :01:00.
The cycling enthusiast who had just replaced their stolen bikes, only to | :01:01. | :01:19.
be targeted again. For them to be stolen a second time, we could not | :01:20. | :01:21.
leave it. And a groundbreaking technique | :01:22. | :01:25.
that can tell if you've had a It's our last day with Wales' | :01:26. | :01:28.
biggest police force and the Roadshow team is gearing up for | :01:29. | :01:34.
the weekend on the Gower peninsula. Morning Rav we're in Rhossili Bay, | :01:35. | :01:36.
its beach was voted number one in the UK and attracts thousands | :01:37. | :01:39.
of holiday makers every year. Today we'll be finding out how | :01:40. | :01:44.
the police and emergency services First this morning, the 84-year-old | :01:45. | :01:49.
have-a-go hero who took It is so annoying to have stuff | :01:50. | :02:17.
stolen. It really is. This is my shop, I work hard in here. Who knows | :02:18. | :02:33.
what they could do if they felt too threatened. This is a seaside town | :02:34. | :02:35.
just near Cardiff. This shop has been owned by Dennis for 25 years. | :02:36. | :02:39.
It is now run by his son but 84-year-old Dennis still plays his | :02:40. | :02:43.
part. I still feel I am a Mac member of the store, if I didn't, I would | :02:44. | :02:49.
retire. I feel like I am needed. It is nice to feel needed and I carry | :02:50. | :02:58.
on. By 9pm on Sunday evening on the 1st of June, things were quiet. By | :02:59. | :03:06.
that time of the evening we are winding down. The last hour can be | :03:07. | :03:09.
quite slow. I am in the back doing various things. I heard Sam, who has | :03:10. | :03:15.
worked here for just over a year, calling. I realised from the sound | :03:16. | :03:20.
of his voice something was seriously wrong. Two masked men had burst | :03:21. | :03:27.
through the door and jumped over-the-counter. One brandished a | :03:28. | :03:32.
wheel wrench and the other threatened the shop assistant with a | :03:33. | :03:37.
knife will stop one of them grabbed cigarettes and the other tried to | :03:38. | :03:41.
break into the till. Hearing the commotion, Dennis came out from the | :03:42. | :03:45.
back of the shop. When I got to the bottom, I could see two men behind | :03:46. | :03:51.
the counter. All in black, faces covered. Others might have | :03:52. | :03:57.
retreated, but not Dennis. He confronted them. He said, give as | :03:58. | :04:05.
the money. I said, sarcastically, yes, certainly. He said, I have got | :04:06. | :04:15.
a knife. Knife or no knife, Dennis had no intention of letting them | :04:16. | :04:19.
have anything and not the stolen cigarettes to the floor. They had | :04:20. | :04:24.
picked on the wrong shop. Obviously at my age I don't want anything | :04:25. | :04:30.
physical. I wasn't prepared to hit anybody but I can defend myself will | :04:31. | :04:38.
stop the man holding a wheel wrench lashed out at the 84-year-old | :04:39. | :04:45.
shopkeeper. Then his son, Mark came down the aisle. AIK think they | :04:46. | :04:54.
thought then, we are at -- I think they thought they were outnumbered | :04:55. | :05:00.
and ran away. Dennis had got the better of them. I was gasping like a | :05:01. | :05:06.
fish. I am slightly asthmatic and I was gasping a bit. This could have | :05:07. | :05:15.
been worse. Dennis was lucky to have escaped with nothing more than | :05:16. | :05:23.
bruising. Even though what he did was brave, it is what we call a gut | :05:24. | :05:26.
reaction to what was happening. The member of staff behind the counter, | :05:27. | :05:32.
when he was spoken to afterwards, was in shock. Although the men were | :05:33. | :05:38.
wearing masks, someone might recognise them from this CCTV | :05:39. | :05:45.
footage. Their clothing is quite distinctive, especially one whose | :05:46. | :05:52.
top appears to have white paint splattered across the top of it. | :05:53. | :05:57.
This is a serious crime. We are keen to find them. We are appealing for | :05:58. | :06:02.
anybody to come forward who may be able to help. In the aftermath of | :06:03. | :06:14.
the attack, Dennis has been left Moore said than angry. I loathe the | :06:15. | :06:21.
thought of teenagers having been stupid enough to attempt something | :06:22. | :06:26.
like that. And also carrying offensive weapons even if they did | :06:27. | :06:31.
not seem to know what to do with them, places them in another | :06:32. | :06:35.
category and the thought of them going to prison for a long time is | :06:36. | :06:44.
horrifying. Dennis decided to tackle these robbers and you would not | :06:45. | :06:49.
advise that? No, he is 84 years of age, but don't get involved with | :06:50. | :06:53.
these people, think of your own personal safety. What do you know of | :06:54. | :07:04.
the two men? Two males, aged between 17 and 19 years. We have a witness | :07:05. | :07:11.
we want to speak to. Seen on the CCTV entering the shop as they have | :07:12. | :07:17.
left. We need that person to come forward. That witness did see the | :07:18. | :07:24.
robbers as they left? Yes, we can piece it together. You think it | :07:25. | :07:33.
could link to an earlier robbery? At 1030 a.m. In April, there was a | :07:34. | :07:36.
similar attack when the person responsible was wearing a | :07:37. | :07:42.
distinctive jacket. They are being investigated together. If you can | :07:43. | :07:49.
help, do get in touch. Make sure you pick up the phone. | :07:50. | :07:55.
Some network and mobile operators will charge. | :07:56. | :08:02.
You'll be charged at your standard message rate. | :08:03. | :08:05.
For more than 100 years police have been using fingerprints | :08:06. | :08:09.
But scientists at Sheffield Hallam University have discovered that | :08:10. | :08:14.
the unique patterns on the tips of our fingers can reveal a lot | :08:15. | :08:18.
Now I know from my time in the force that quite often only | :08:19. | :08:38.
Yes that's right and if you take a look through the microscope now | :08:39. | :08:49.
I'm sure you'll be able to tell me the difference between the two? | :08:50. | :08:56.
This is the sort of thing the lab would not be too happy with me | :08:57. | :09:03.
because it is blurred and a bit missing. They would not be happy | :09:04. | :09:09.
with that for identification purposes, but your research is | :09:10. | :09:13.
proving you can get a lot of information from something like | :09:14. | :09:19.
that? Yes, we have technology which enables you to detect the chemistry | :09:20. | :09:25.
in the finger rinse. Very interesting. You will show us some | :09:26. | :09:31.
examples. We have three images. What is the top one? This is one mark of | :09:32. | :09:40.
one suspect. It is a real crime scene Mark. What we have done with | :09:41. | :09:43.
the second one, we can detect multiple spaces in one analysis. On | :09:44. | :09:51.
the top panel we can see a fatty acid which we all have in sweat. I | :09:52. | :10:00.
have superimposed them ocular image on this one. Tell others what you | :10:01. | :10:06.
have discovered? The other chemical we have discovered is cocaine. You | :10:07. | :10:12.
have gone one step further on the bottom one? We found the presence of | :10:13. | :10:25.
the cocaine metabolite of them. It tells us immediately the suspect has | :10:26. | :10:29.
not just touched cocaine but in Jess did it. So the person who left the | :10:30. | :10:40.
market has taken cocaine? Absolutely and that | :10:41. | :10:45.
market has taken cocaine? Absolutely scenario. You have tried this on | :10:46. | :10:52.
food? Yes, I drank a cup of coffee and after ten minutes I could see a | :10:53. | :10:58.
clear signal for caffeine. So it is not just what you have touch, what | :10:59. | :11:03.
is coming out? And that our medical implications? We have started | :11:04. | :11:09.
determining the sex of offenders through the unit chemistry. One of | :11:10. | :11:15.
our biggest ambitions is to look at medical conditions, again from | :11:16. | :11:18.
unique chemicals present in finger marks. I know the West Yorkshire | :11:19. | :11:22.
Police are trialling this. The Gower Peninsula is famous | :11:23. | :11:28.
for its rugged coastline. But this, with the constant | :11:29. | :11:31.
stream of holiday makers, means What are the main challengers? The | :11:32. | :11:51.
Gower Peninsula is an area of outstanding natural beauty and we do | :11:52. | :11:53.
get thousands of visitors every year. It is a low crime area but we | :11:54. | :11:59.
like to keep people safe. We work with other agencies to conduct | :12:00. | :12:11.
patrols of campsites and make sure people are safe, vigilant and not | :12:12. | :12:20.
committing any crime. We ensure people understand and they have | :12:21. | :12:25.
happy memories of visiting the Gower Peninsula and leave here safely. | :12:26. | :12:27.
Also dealing with missing people? Yes, there are a number of missing | :12:28. | :12:29.
people reported to us and we will work to provide the extra level of | :12:30. | :12:33.
service to locate those people and return them safely. | :12:34. | :12:37.
Well one of those agencies is the coastguard. If someone is found in a | :12:38. | :12:41.
tricky position then police call on their expertise to help rescue them. | :12:42. | :12:44.
Lee Haigh is from the Coastguard and for Crimewatch Roadshow this morning | :12:45. | :12:48.
we've got someone who needs rescuing from a tricky spot. | :12:49. | :12:55.
What is going on here? It is a training exercise. Typical thing we | :12:56. | :13:07.
are called to. Someone stuck on a clip, has fallen down, cut off by | :13:08. | :13:16.
the tide and has attempted to climb. We will come out with local | :13:17. | :13:19.
volunteers and they will come down and recover the person and take them | :13:20. | :13:23.
back to safety. Tell others about the kit you are using, how does it | :13:24. | :13:31.
work? We put the quad pod at the top of the cliff and it makes it easier | :13:32. | :13:36.
to descend and makes it safer and more comfortable when we get the | :13:37. | :13:41.
casualty back up. It is a slow walking movements because this is | :13:42. | :13:44.
someone who will have hurt themselves and cannot make it back | :13:45. | :13:49.
up themselves? They are in a position where they are very | :13:50. | :13:53.
frightened so it is controlled slow recovery. Something we are used to, | :13:54. | :14:00.
but something very alien to them to be walking back up. So we do it very | :14:01. | :14:06.
gently. Thanks for talking is through what is happening. Later in | :14:07. | :14:13.
the programme we will be seeing the top and to safety. | :14:14. | :14:18.
Here on Crimewatch Roadshow we've seen our fair share of criminals who | :14:19. | :14:22.
trick their victims into handing over cash under false pretences. | :14:23. | :14:23.
We went out with police in Newport as they tried to crackdown | :14:24. | :14:27.
These officers from Gwent Police are from operation rogue trader. A | :14:28. | :14:39.
national campaign targeting scrupulous people. This operation is | :14:40. | :14:48.
aimed at catching them out on the road. In an unmarked car, they are | :14:49. | :14:55.
hunting for any commercial vehicles that arouse suspicion. The car is | :14:56. | :15:00.
equipped with automatic number plate recognition. Two cameras on the car | :15:01. | :15:06.
to read the number plates of the cars travelling pastas are behind | :15:07. | :15:10.
us. We can check whether the vehicle has tax and insurance. Stuff like | :15:11. | :15:15.
that. We can turn around and go after that. A passing van has | :15:16. | :15:23.
triggered the system. It was a construction type vehicle. He | :15:24. | :15:28.
catches up with the van and pulls it over. We are | :15:29. | :15:32.
catches up with the van and pulls it over. doing an operation at the | :15:33. | :15:37.
moment. I am going to pull in front of you and I want you to follow me | :15:38. | :15:44.
to check site down the road. This is the check site, the vehicles and | :15:45. | :15:48.
their occupants will be investigated in detail. We have a number of | :15:49. | :15:54.
agencies looking at drivers, details, condition of the vehicle, | :15:55. | :15:59.
whether people are licensed to carry out elements of work and we will | :16:00. | :16:05.
take the details of people on board, gather intelligence. The fans are | :16:06. | :16:10.
coming in thick and fast and many are found to have serious effects. A | :16:11. | :16:15.
smashed window brought this truck to the attention of the police. Now an | :16:16. | :16:25.
inspector is checking the tyres. That has been over the legal limit | :16:26. | :16:29.
for a long time. It is not over half of what we require. Any vehicles in | :16:30. | :16:35.
poor shape are taken off the road until the owner makes the necessary | :16:36. | :16:40.
repairs. They use these vehicles on a daily basis and some of the | :16:41. | :16:43.
defects are dangerous, which could result in a serious accident. | :16:44. | :16:50.
Officers on patrol thought that this red van was being driven erratically | :16:51. | :16:53.
and they pulled it into the check site. Although the aim of the | :16:54. | :16:58.
operation is to disrupt rogue trading, this time they suspect | :16:59. | :17:02.
something different and they bring in the sniffer dog. Anything on you | :17:03. | :17:10.
that you should not have? Drugs. Cannabis. Where on the drugs -- | :17:11. | :17:20.
whereon you are the drugs can make in your sock? Please bend down. We | :17:21. | :17:28.
have recovered the quantity of cannabis and a quantity of a white | :17:29. | :17:34.
substance which are believed to be amphetamines. He has been arrested | :17:35. | :17:38.
on suspicion of possession of controlled drugs. The driver later | :17:39. | :17:43.
received a caution for possession of cannabis and amphetamines. | :17:44. | :17:46.
Meanwhile, there has been a development with the first catch. It | :17:47. | :17:49.
turns out the driver is not insured to drive the van. At this moment, I | :17:50. | :17:55.
am reporting you for driving without insurance. You do not have to say | :17:56. | :17:59.
anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention no | :18:00. | :18:02.
something upon which you later rely on in court. Do you understand? The | :18:03. | :18:09.
driver is fined ?300 on the spot and gets six points on his licence. The | :18:10. | :18:16.
van is seized and impounded. So far, it has been a busy morning for | :18:17. | :18:19.
everyone involved in the operation and it has turned up a lot more than | :18:20. | :18:23.
just traffic offences. Intelligence has been gathered for Trading | :18:24. | :18:30.
Standards. The Department of Work and Pensions have found numerous | :18:31. | :18:33.
people who appear to be working whilst claiming benefits. As a rogue | :18:34. | :18:36.
trader operation, it is very successful. | :18:37. | :18:39.
Now we left you with a bit of a cliff hanger earlier as the | :18:40. | :18:43.
coastguard set about rescuing our casualty from the cliffside. The | :18:44. | :18:45.
rescue is coming along well, I hope, isn't it Lee Haigh? | :18:46. | :18:54.
Yes, the casualty is coming up with a technician, being brought back | :18:55. | :19:00.
into safety. He will be checked over and then he can go on his way if we | :19:01. | :19:05.
are happy. It is a time-consuming process. A great many ropes and a | :19:06. | :19:08.
huge team involved. Where do these people come from? They are from the | :19:09. | :19:14.
local Rhossili area, local volunteers. They do not get paid for | :19:15. | :19:20.
this. They do this as a servers to the community. They all carry a | :19:21. | :19:24.
pager and when it goes off, become and do this type of thing. And what | :19:25. | :19:29.
sort of training today need to? They train every week in various aspects | :19:30. | :19:32.
of the duties they have to carry out. To make sure they are appeared | :19:33. | :19:40.
to come out when it is actually needed. And they have stopped at the | :19:41. | :19:48.
moment, from what I've see, why is that? What do they need to do before | :19:49. | :19:53.
they can come further up you might we use a pulley system for the | :19:54. | :19:59.
recovery, we have got wenches as well but we like to do it this way | :20:00. | :20:03.
because it is quiet. And we feel it is safer. If we need to stop in a | :20:04. | :20:11.
hurry, it is instantaneous. Depending on the height, we may need | :20:12. | :20:15.
to reset the device. And you have been using this for 23 years. Is | :20:16. | :20:19.
there any particular rescue that sticks in the memory? We are a busy | :20:20. | :20:24.
team here and we have had several commendations but the one that | :20:25. | :20:27.
sticks in my mind is when we had to make teenage girls who were stuck on | :20:28. | :20:34.
up fine but when the technician went up fine but when the technician went | :20:35. | :20:38.
over to the second, she fell off a cliff and he caught her in his arms. | :20:39. | :20:43.
over to the second, she fell off a Well, that is a happy ending. Are | :20:44. | :20:45.
there any parts of the course line that are too tricky to get to? | :20:46. | :20:53.
there any parts of the course line really. The guys have been born and | :20:54. | :20:56.
bred in the village so they know the area intimately. They will always do | :20:57. | :21:00.
their very best to get to any part of the area. We can see the casualty | :21:01. | :21:05.
coming to the top of the cliff. It of the area. We can see the casualty | :21:06. | :21:13.
disorientated, if of the area. We can see the casualty | :21:14. | :21:19.
it to the top. The next stage will be first aid? Yes, we will | :21:20. | :21:24.
it to the top. The next stage will them back to a point of safety and | :21:25. | :21:26.
the guys are first aid trained. They will check them out and if they had | :21:27. | :21:30.
any injuries, we would have a paramedic standing by to treat them. | :21:31. | :21:31.
any injuries, we would have a If needed, we can put | :21:32. | :21:33.
any injuries, we would have a over the cliff to deliver medical | :21:34. | :21:38.
aids down there. And a happy ending hereto. I'm off to get some tea and | :21:39. | :21:41.
biscuits. Now, a handgun, a stolen bank card | :21:42. | :21:47.
and a man stealing makeup. It's all been caught on CCTV but do you | :21:48. | :21:50.
recognise anyone? London, March this year. Two people | :21:51. | :22:00.
are working in the cashier is offers of a supermarket when there is a | :22:01. | :22:04.
knock on the door. The door is opened and three men armed with a | :22:05. | :22:07.
handgun and a metal pole burst in. They hustle the staff members into | :22:08. | :22:11.
the corner of the room and force the young woman to open the safe. And | :22:12. | :22:15.
they are not hanging around. In fact, they're so busy shopping | :22:16. | :22:20.
receipts and cash into a carrier bag that they leave the gun on the desk. | :22:21. | :22:25.
But it is snapped up by one of the robbers before all three bundle out | :22:26. | :22:29.
of the room. This violent gang stole ?10,000 in cash. Do you recognise | :22:30. | :22:34.
these men beneath their masks? You know what you have to do? | :22:35. | :22:44.
October last year and two thieves are working this bank in Leicester | :22:45. | :22:47.
City centre. They hang around the branch before spotting a potential | :22:48. | :22:52.
victim. An 81-year-old woman. While she bends down to get her bank card, | :22:53. | :22:57.
they make their move. Peering over her shoulders as she types in her | :22:58. | :23:01.
pin. Having got it, believe the bank together. But the man is impatient | :23:02. | :23:07.
to know why the elderly lady is taking so long. So he goes back in | :23:08. | :23:12.
to check where she is. Police say the victim's debit card was stolen | :23:13. | :23:17.
later on and used to take out cash and buy a mobile phone in the city | :23:18. | :23:23.
centre, totalling nearly ?700. This peer needs to be caught now. Give us | :23:24. | :23:31.
a call. This shoplifter has got some cheek. | :23:32. | :23:36.
Bold as brass, he strolls into a high-street chemist in London and | :23:37. | :23:40.
pockets cosmetics from the shelves. Take a look, as he starts items down | :23:41. | :23:45.
his trousers. He even drops one. Clumsy. Subtlety is not his strong | :23:46. | :23:51.
point. When he runs out of hands, he uses his mouth. That is when he is | :23:52. | :23:55.
spotted by the cashier is. He heads to the till, but he has not got any | :23:56. | :24:00.
intention of paying. He swaggered out of the shop with 200 quid's | :24:01. | :24:08.
worth of goods. We would be made up if you named him. | :24:09. | :24:14.
Any of that lot look familiar? If so, get in touch. And there are | :24:15. | :24:17.
still plenty of opportunities for you to turn detective this morning. | :24:18. | :24:20.
We need to track down the crooks living it up in the sunshine after | :24:21. | :24:35.
Still to come, the shopkeeper desperate to be reunited with a very | :24:36. | :24:46.
special pirates. -- parrots. Earlier in the programme, we saw the police | :24:47. | :24:48.
helicopter scrambled to get our. It's one of the main ways police | :24:49. | :24:54.
here can find missing people. PC Alan Frost is at the controls | :24:55. | :24:57.
this morning. It's an impressive looking machine, what sort of things | :24:58. | :25:00.
do you do? People are found in the area, | :25:01. | :25:07.
especially on this coastline. We use various bits of kit on the aircraft | :25:08. | :25:11.
to locate them. The main bit of kit is the HD camera, containing a | :25:12. | :25:20.
lowlight camera, a zoom camera, and the infrared thermal camera. It is | :25:21. | :25:28.
an expensive bit of kit, ?750,000. But when used properly, it is | :25:29. | :25:33.
fantastic. Let's look inside. A small area, but packed with | :25:34. | :25:38.
equipment. It is indeed. All the pilots instruments are there, and | :25:39. | :25:41.
the police officer will be in the back. A touch-screen system, and an | :25:42. | :25:49.
inflatable rescue device that we can deploy from the aircraft to assist | :25:50. | :25:56.
people in difficulty. And we have some CCTV footage that we can show | :25:57. | :26:01.
of a recent operation looking for a missing person. Yes. A 84-year-old | :26:02. | :26:09.
man was missing in the Swansea area and a number of police officers | :26:10. | :26:15.
attempted to locate him at 1am. The aircraft attended and managed to | :26:16. | :26:18.
locate him within a reasonable amount of time. He was located safe | :26:19. | :26:23.
and well, lying next to a shopping trolley. He had obviously, if he had | :26:24. | :26:32.
been there for longer, he could have been in trouble. But he went to | :26:33. | :26:35.
hospital and he was OK. On the other side of the helicopter, there is | :26:36. | :26:40.
some other kit, almost in parallel with the camera. That is the light | :26:41. | :26:51.
sensor device. It lights up a football field at night time. It | :26:52. | :26:58.
will mean enhanced safety for police officers and members of the public | :26:59. | :27:04.
who may be trying to be found. You have alluded to some of the cost | :27:05. | :27:08.
already. It costs a lot just to keep this in the air. It is an extensive | :27:09. | :27:13.
item. It is approximately ?1000 an hour to keep the aircraft in the | :27:14. | :27:18.
air. But then again, it enhances the safety of not only the police | :27:19. | :27:20.
officers but the thousands of visitors we get to the region every | :27:21. | :27:27.
year. Thank you for the guided tour. Back to you, Rav. | :27:28. | :27:32.
For a lot of people holidays mean hobbies, and that's true for the | :27:33. | :27:35.
couple who were targeted in our next crime. The cycle mad duo enjoyed | :27:36. | :27:39.
getting out on their bikes, until thieves put the brakes on. | :27:40. | :27:42.
We would like to stay in this house but it does not feel the same any | :27:43. | :27:50.
more. It is just a horrible feeling, that somebody is watching | :27:51. | :27:58.
you. For Joe and any Lucas, cycling is a way of life. We met 56 years | :27:59. | :28:05.
ago. Joe used to cycle every weekend, so we thought -- I thought | :28:06. | :28:12.
if I wanted to see him, I needed to get a bike. Every holiday, we take | :28:13. | :28:17.
the bikes to France, Portugal, Italy, Ireland. We got engaged in | :28:18. | :28:21.
Ireland. It is a big part of our life. The bikes were high-tech and | :28:22. | :28:28.
expensive but cycling took a back seat when the couple's first child | :28:29. | :28:31.
was born. To make way for the family, the bikes were locked in a | :28:32. | :28:39.
shared outside. On the evening of the 8th of January, three men got | :28:40. | :28:43.
into the back garden. In the house, Amy was alone with Tommy. IK Kim | :28:44. | :28:49.
upstairs to have a gaffe and get ready. -- I took him upstairs. The | :28:50. | :28:58.
men broke the lock on the shed and insight, founded the three bikes | :28:59. | :29:01.
locked together. They were able to carry them out of the garden without | :29:02. | :29:07.
being spotted. Got home from work at 7:00pm and I saw that the gate was | :29:08. | :29:11.
open. And went along the side passage to the back garden and both | :29:12. | :29:17.
doors were wide open. My heart dropped. It was an immediate | :29:18. | :29:23.
horrible feeling, knowing that my wife and son were in the house. It | :29:24. | :29:30.
made me really angry. One of the bikes was particularly special to | :29:31. | :29:34.
Joel. It was the first bike and had a Chibok second-hand, which are | :29:35. | :29:39.
wrote from San Francisco to Los Angeles with a friend. It was my | :29:40. | :29:43.
dream bike. You never thought I would have a bike like that. Why | :29:44. | :29:47.
would have kept it forever and hopefully Tommy could have written | :29:48. | :29:51.
it when he was older. Joe and Amy replaced the bikes and instead of | :29:52. | :29:54.
putting them in the shed, they kept them in the house. But they were | :29:55. | :30:01.
storm at safer. When it happened again, it was devastating. It seems | :30:02. | :30:10.
that someone is watching us and they know that we have these bikes. We | :30:11. | :30:15.
are not able to keep them here, which is horrible. On the morning of | :30:16. | :30:19.
the 27th of April, Joe and Amy woke up to find that the three | :30:20. | :30:24.
replacement bikes had been taken when their van had been broken into. | :30:25. | :30:28.
For the bikes to be stolen a second time within four months, we could | :30:29. | :30:32.
not believe it. Joe and Amy are not the only ones. Criminals will often | :30:33. | :30:36.
return once stolen items have been replaced. Regular thieves are aware | :30:37. | :30:40.
of the procedures involved with insurance and they will wait and | :30:41. | :30:46.
target vulnerable victims for a second time. Joe and Amy now feel | :30:47. | :30:51.
vulnerable and are thinking of taking drastic action. I do not feel | :30:52. | :30:58.
safe in the house any more. I do not want to move but it seems like the | :30:59. | :31:04.
only option at the moment. Many victims of crime feel very similar | :31:05. | :31:11.
to Joel and Amy. It is an intrusion on their perceived. Unfortunately, | :31:12. | :31:16.
their confidence in their property can be destroyed. If it is dark | :31:17. | :31:22.
outside, my stomach is twisted in knots. It is unsettling for all of | :31:23. | :31:29.
us. It is not a nice thing. Especially when you have such a | :31:30. | :31:39.
young baby. Is it common that somebody to be targeted twice? | :31:40. | :31:46.
Unfortunately it is not uncommon. Once they have been once, the | :31:47. | :31:51.
thieves know what they are looking for and can return. These are | :31:52. | :31:56.
specific bikes that were stolen? Yes, six bikes between January and | :31:57. | :32:07.
April this year. We know bike crime is a growing concern to the police | :32:08. | :32:15.
because in the last year it has gone up why 60% and in Cardiff it is 20%. | :32:16. | :32:19.
You have some CCTV that demonstrates this? The CCTV shows how easy it | :32:20. | :32:22.
is. Cable cutters or brute force alone. Sports facilities, university | :32:23. | :32:28.
buildings, these facilities are very vulnerable. Lots of places bring | :32:29. | :32:39.
their bikes on holiday. Lock your bike to something immovable. That is | :32:40. | :32:46.
great advice. In keeping with this holiday vibe we are asking for your | :32:47. | :32:48.
help to find some fugitives who think they can evade justice while | :32:49. | :32:57.
topping up their tan. We have the National Crime Agency to explain. | :32:58. | :33:02.
Many criminals think they can go to Spain and go on the run and evade | :33:03. | :33:08.
capture. Some are choosing to go further afield? Yes, our role is to | :33:09. | :33:15.
protect the public from serious organised and we work with | :33:16. | :33:17.
international partners and the public to track down British | :33:18. | :33:20.
fugitives. We have had some success, but we are finding Spain, | :33:21. | :33:27.
which used to be the destination of choice has been taken over by places | :33:28. | :33:32.
like the Netherlands and Cyprus. Give us some of the figures. In the | :33:33. | :33:37.
last few years we have tracked down and arrested and bring back to the | :33:38. | :33:43.
UK, 74 out of 110 most serious and organised criminals. Three more we | :33:44. | :33:50.
are looking at today. Let's start with this first one. | :33:51. | :34:03.
James Tarrant has been convicted of possessing cocaine and heroin and | :34:04. | :34:14.
the possession of a firearm. OK, what about him? A 70-year-old man | :34:15. | :34:25.
originally from Limassol in Cyprus. We think he is in Cyprus. He has | :34:26. | :34:37.
been conveyed did not differ ordering 20,000 members of the | :34:38. | :34:46.
British public and has made ?4 million from his criminal ventures. | :34:47. | :34:49.
Stephen Blondel. Sometimes calls himself Stephen Owen. We believe he | :34:50. | :34:51.
is in Spain. Has been convicted of supplying heroin, up and down the | :34:52. | :34:53.
West Coast of the UK. They need to be brought back for justice. With | :34:54. | :34:55.
your help we can get this lot out of the sunshine. But a couple of them | :34:56. | :34:59.
could be dangerous, so don't approach them. You can call those | :35:00. | :35:09.
using the numbers on screen. Now to the raiders who broke into a | :35:10. | :35:14.
Newport pet shop and made off with thousands of pounds worth of hand | :35:15. | :35:22.
reared parrots. We are constantly worried, every | :35:23. | :35:25.
time we come in in the morning, what we will find. We have nightmares. It | :35:26. | :35:36.
has been a labour of love. For seven years, Sue Coomb has worked day and | :35:37. | :35:42.
night building her business and for her and her partner, it is much more | :35:43. | :35:48.
than a pet shop. Each and every bird are our baby birds. On the evening | :35:49. | :35:55.
of April the 15th, staff lot. As usual leaving the takings in the | :35:56. | :36:04.
tail. But just a few hours later, the doors were forced open. A | :36:05. | :36:11.
timestamp on the till receipt indicates it was opened at 2:38am | :36:12. | :36:16.
when the contents were emptied. The thieves cleared the shelves before | :36:17. | :36:20.
turning their attention to more lucrative stock. I know they tried | :36:21. | :36:26.
to get the cockatoo because they left one of the cages on the side | :36:27. | :36:33.
and the door wide open and the food bowl on the floor. They tried to | :36:34. | :36:39.
entice him. But the thieves were successful in bagging a nonvenomous | :36:40. | :36:45.
rat snake and add valuable breeding pair of African grey parrots. On the | :36:46. | :36:54.
business side it is going to cost thousands of pounds we cannot afford | :36:55. | :36:58.
to lose. It has had a massive effect on them and their confidence and in | :36:59. | :37:05.
the security of the store. It is a small business and they cannot | :37:06. | :37:07.
afford to take the loss. But the financial cost has not been as hard | :37:08. | :37:19.
to bear than John Snow, the African breeding bird. His ten, she may | :37:20. | :37:25.
never breed again. We could put her with another male, but we could lose | :37:26. | :37:34.
thousands of pounds a year in babies. They will have frightened | :37:35. | :37:39.
him, he will not have known what was happening. Now she is anxious it | :37:40. | :37:48.
could happen again. I am constantly worried in the day, when we lock up. | :37:49. | :37:55.
Constantly worried when we come in in the morning, what we will find. | :37:56. | :37:59.
She did say she would either move or pack it in altogether. She cannot | :38:00. | :38:06.
deal with any loss again. The value that was taken amounted to more than | :38:07. | :38:10.
?2000 but the theft has had an effect beyond money. On the | :38:11. | :38:19.
emotional side of it, stealing dog bowls and dog leads is one thing, | :38:20. | :38:30.
but when they steal pet birds, they don't have a clue of the impact. We | :38:31. | :38:33.
have used social media, put messages out on Facebook if anybody is trying | :38:34. | :38:35.
to sell these parrots or the snake. John Snow is the one I want to get | :38:36. | :38:46.
back. It is very hard. Your mind is constantly thinking, where is he? | :38:47. | :38:51.
Mainly I am thinking, is he still alive? We would be over the moon to | :38:52. | :38:59.
have him back where he belongs. We know him, we know his character. He | :39:00. | :39:11.
is our bird, he belongs to others. If you can help on that, get in | :39:12. | :39:15.
touch. We have seen a cliff rescue, the police helicopter now let's turn | :39:16. | :39:21.
out to deceive. We have come to the lock-out and with me is Audrey | :39:22. | :39:28.
Frank, one of an army of 50 volunteers. We don't take our eyes | :39:29. | :39:34.
off it, unless we're looking at people on the cliff. Sometimes it is | :39:35. | :39:40.
people popping in and out of this lookout but you get involved with | :39:41. | :39:43.
rings generally? We watch for anything, boats, fishing vessels, | :39:44. | :39:53.
pleasure craft, surfers, fishermen. Our major concern, we watch the | :39:54. | :39:58.
tidal island where people head off to make sure they don't get stuck. | :39:59. | :40:04.
We have a notice board giving the times, there is a five-hour gap you | :40:05. | :40:11.
can walk out there and we hope they come back in time and don't have to | :40:12. | :40:16.
be rescued. We have not had anybody rescued this year, but in years gone | :40:17. | :40:21.
by, we have had people who have had. We report to the Coast Guard and the | :40:22. | :40:25.
Coast Guard deploy who they think necessary, so that involves the | :40:26. | :40:28.
cliff rescue, the lifeboat. Sometimes the helicopter. Thanks the | :40:29. | :40:36.
showing me around in here. It is a small area where many members of the | :40:37. | :40:40.
team have to work because they are operational for most of the time. | :40:41. | :40:44.
But they have had a break in themselves so they have been the | :40:45. | :40:47.
victims of crime. But they have been working with many agencies and one | :40:48. | :40:54.
of the agencies is the RNLI. Jeff, you have a walkie-talkie, give the | :40:55. | :40:58.
message because there is a boat on the water? Very well. Lifeboat, | :40:59. | :41:11.
over. They are very busy this time of year? Extremely, this time of the | :41:12. | :41:22.
year. Hopefully involved in more safety than anything else. A, out. | :41:23. | :41:34.
They are very busy. Many sea kayaks and a big increase in the number of | :41:35. | :41:38.
those incidents we know you have had to be called out here. We know you | :41:39. | :41:46.
have read training operation and sometimes on live television, it | :41:47. | :41:47.
does interrupt. And before we go, we've got some | :41:48. | :41:50.
updates on a couple of cases we've You may remember our appeal | :41:51. | :41:53.
for information on the suspected arson in Roath in | :41:54. | :41:58.
Cardiff from Wednesday's programme. South Wales Police tell us they | :41:59. | :42:00.
have since arrested a man. This wanted face - | :42:01. | :42:04.
Maxwell Michael Parsons. He was sentenced in his absence for | :42:05. | :42:05.
a sophisticated fraud which cost the Well, great news - | :42:06. | :42:09.
he's now in custody He'll be transferred to prison to | :42:10. | :42:14.
start We have been sent some promising new | :42:15. | :42:34.
leads of the armed robbery at a jewellers in Leeds. They are chasing | :42:35. | :42:35.
that up as we speak. Now Sian, your wheels are rolling | :42:36. | :42:38.
again, where are you heading next? Rav we're got a lot of travelling to | :42:39. | :42:42.
do between now and Monday morning. We're off to the North East | :42:43. | :42:45.
of England where we'll be out on the roads with Cleveland Police, | :42:46. | :42:48.
who have a brand new approach to spotting dangerous drivers - | :42:49. | :42:52.
from the cab of an HGV. For more details | :42:53. | :42:55.
on today's programme head to the website Finally, | :42:56. | :43:05.
we'll leave you with another look at Somebody out there knows where these | :43:06. | :43:08.
people are - if you do, call us. | :43:09. | :43:14. |
