We're back for our final week - and waiting for your calls to bring | :00:00. | :00:09.
The pub landlord - tied up and beaten for his takings. | :00:10. | :00:21.
It was very brutal. I could not eat solids for two weeks because there | :00:22. | :00:25.
was a hairline fracture of the jaw. And this scene of devastation isn't | :00:26. | :00:32.
quite what it seems - Hello and welcome to the final week | :00:33. | :00:34.
of this year's Crimewatch Roadshow. We've travelled the length | :00:35. | :01:00.
and breadth of the UK over the last three weeks, | :01:01. | :01:02.
going behind the scenes with police and appealing for your | :01:03. | :01:04.
help to crack unsolved cases. And there's lots more | :01:05. | :01:07.
to come today, including... A nightmare before Christmas | :01:08. | :01:09.
for a restaurant manager The door did swing open and then | :01:10. | :01:12.
appeared this man with black tights on his head with a Santa outfit | :01:13. | :01:21.
over the top. And do you know who left Lee | :01:22. | :01:23.
with these horrific head injuries? Today, the Roadshow has | :01:24. | :01:30.
moved on to Waddington in Lincolnshire and the Fire | :01:31. | :01:32.
and Rescue centre there. Although, Michelle it looks more | :01:33. | :01:35.
like a war zone to me. It does look just like | :01:36. | :01:42.
the scene of an earthquake And there's a good reason for it | :01:43. | :01:48.
needing to look so realistic. I've come to a specialist training | :01:49. | :01:53.
centre for the emergency services - like the urban search and rescue | :01:54. | :01:56.
team you can see behind me. And this morning, I'll be seeing | :01:57. | :01:59.
just how they prepare First though, police | :02:00. | :02:02.
need your help to catch the masked gang behind a terrifying robbery | :02:03. | :02:08.
at a quiet country pub. The Rising Sun is situated in the | :02:09. | :02:22.
heart of rural Derbyshire. The landlord has run this country pub | :02:23. | :02:29.
for four years. The community is very good. Local people, very | :02:30. | :02:35.
friendly. Everyone knows each other. All very helpful. I have two pugs | :02:36. | :02:44.
Milo and Juno. They are fantastic. 90% of the time they are downstairs | :02:45. | :02:48.
in the pub with us. It is a great area around here for dog walking. On | :02:49. | :02:56.
Easter Monday, Stephen closed up after the bank holiday weekend. It | :02:57. | :03:02.
had been a very busy day. I had been mostly working in the kitchen. After | :03:03. | :03:07.
locking up the pub, Stephen headed upstairs or Milo and Juno. As | :03:08. | :03:11.
Stephen was watching television, Juno seemed to sense something was | :03:12. | :03:17.
wrong. Juno jumped off the sofa and started barking. I stood up and went | :03:18. | :03:21.
out of the door to see what it was she was barking out. -- at. The | :03:22. | :03:34.
intruders had burst in and started attacking Stephen. It was very | :03:35. | :03:40.
brutal. There were lots of blows to the head. It got to the point where | :03:41. | :03:44.
I thought this will either end up with me being killed or, certainly I | :03:45. | :03:50.
was at the point where I was close to passing out from it. They dragged | :03:51. | :04:01.
me to my feet. I could hear them talking on some cells saying, put | :04:02. | :04:05.
him in the bedroom, put him in the bed. One put a pillow case over my | :04:06. | :04:11.
head. Another one was tying my hands behind my back. The men ransacked | :04:12. | :04:20.
the place, searching for money. They went through every tablet, through | :04:21. | :04:25.
the drawers in the bedroom, on the floor and emptied them, looking for | :04:26. | :04:33.
cash. They put me in the bathroom. Stephen was ordered not to move but | :04:34. | :04:36.
struggled desperately to free himself. While I was trying to get | :04:37. | :04:44.
my hands free, I must have moved and not something on the floor. One of | :04:45. | :04:48.
them flew the door straight open. Came in and punch me round ahead | :04:49. | :04:53.
again saying, we told you not to move. Shut the door. I think I must | :04:54. | :04:57.
have waited a minute or two. Could not hear any noise outside so I | :04:58. | :05:02.
started to wriggle my hands free. As soon as I got a hand free, I pulled | :05:03. | :05:08.
Attila Case of my head. I heard a noise outside the door and I froze. | :05:09. | :05:22.
What should I do? Fortunately, it was just Juno. Seeing Juno waiting, | :05:23. | :05:27.
as opposed to three guys in overalls and it was a big relief. The | :05:28. | :05:34.
attackers had fled, taking thousands of pounds in cash. Stephen was left | :05:35. | :05:41.
with a number of injuries. One of my fingers was broken. I could not eat | :05:42. | :05:46.
solids for two weeks just because my drawer, there had been a hairline | :05:47. | :05:50.
fracture on the jaw so I could not eat anything. Round the neck, you | :05:51. | :05:55.
could see where they had been choking me. There were a few | :05:56. | :06:00.
bruises. Stephen's scars were not just physical. Most nights, a replay | :06:01. | :06:08.
in my head, was I could have done differently? It brings it back and | :06:09. | :06:14.
makes a vivid again. Juno has been left traumatised. If she hears a | :06:15. | :06:21.
creek in the building, she jumps up straightaway, starts barking at the | :06:22. | :06:26.
door. Some night she will sit and stare at the door, starts growling. | :06:27. | :06:30.
To be honest, that makes me quite nervous. It is still fear that | :06:31. | :06:40.
someone has gone in. For Stephen, support from the community has made | :06:41. | :06:47.
him determined to carry on. I have experienced the worst of humanity | :06:48. | :06:50.
and the best. All my neighbours are my friends. If I were to run away | :06:51. | :06:54.
from it, it would be letting them win, letting them beat me more than | :06:55. | :06:59.
they already have. I do not want that to happen. | :07:00. | :07:04.
A horrific attack in such a tight knit community. | :07:05. | :07:07.
DC Stephen Pullar, of Derbyshire Constabulary | :07:08. | :07:08.
Remind us of the details of the attack. This took place back on 28th | :07:09. | :07:21.
of March, the bank holiday Monday, Easter Monday evening. It was about | :07:22. | :07:26.
10:30pm when two men burst into The Rising Sun in the small village of | :07:27. | :07:32.
Middleton in the Peak District. They started to attack the landlord. | :07:33. | :07:37.
These thieves knew what they wanted, didn't they? They were looking for | :07:38. | :07:45.
cash. With it being a bank holiday weekend, they were expecting a lot | :07:46. | :07:48.
of cash but there was not the amount they were hoping for. Stephen tried | :07:49. | :07:53.
to fight back but sustains nasty injuries. He did. He sustained a | :07:54. | :07:59.
broken jaw and could not eat solids for a couple of weeks that he broke | :08:00. | :08:03.
the finger trying to fend off an attack. It is the mental toll it has | :08:04. | :08:07.
taken on him as well. The support of the locals in the village has been | :08:08. | :08:13.
invaluable. What else do we know about the people who did this? Two | :08:14. | :08:18.
men broke him. Another was searching the premises for cash. They're | :08:19. | :08:23.
looking for three, four men. One was six foot tall and the other was | :08:24. | :08:29.
five. Both broad build. A slightly shorter one was five foot seven, | :08:30. | :08:33.
slim build. They all had North East regional accents. This has affected | :08:34. | :08:44.
Stephen and the dog? They are bearing up well under the | :08:45. | :08:45.
circumstances. Well, if you know anything | :08:46. | :08:49.
about that nasty attack on Stephen at today's selection | :08:50. | :08:52.
of crooks caught on camera. A silver car pulls up outside a | :08:53. | :09:07.
house in Shropshire. A man gets out and checks to see if anyone is home. | :09:08. | :09:14.
He is in luck. No one is in. He sets to work in trying to break through | :09:15. | :09:19.
the patio doors you can see him in a reflection of the TV. He searches | :09:20. | :09:23.
the house. What is the after? According to police, he nabs a | :09:24. | :09:30.
white, jewellery box. He goes to leave but not before giving us quite | :09:31. | :09:35.
a few. Cheeky! He drives away but not for long. Two minutes later he | :09:36. | :09:41.
speeds back up the drives -- the drive and runs back inside. He | :09:42. | :09:45.
returns to the kitchen and has with him another hall in a pillow case. | :09:46. | :09:49.
Once he has finally got enough, he heads out. 11 grand's worth of items | :09:50. | :09:56.
were taken by this man and over five grand's worth of damage was done to | :09:57. | :10:00.
the door. This burglar gave the victims eight deal. Let's crack this | :10:01. | :10:09.
one. Get on the blower. It is a Sunday at this church in Bristol. | :10:10. | :10:18.
November 20 14. This man may well want to confess his sins. There are | :10:19. | :10:24.
candles of remembrance and proud. He fumbles in his pockets. He is not | :10:25. | :10:28.
interested in worshipping to the heavens, it is the charity box | :10:29. | :10:31.
underneath. He pulls out what appears to be a specially adapted to | :10:32. | :10:35.
and prepares it ready for his evil crime. After a few minutes of | :10:36. | :10:39.
fumbling around, he manages to prise open the box. He takes out the cash | :10:40. | :10:44.
and simply walks away from the police believe the same man targeted | :10:45. | :10:48.
the same church the previous month. Again using a specially adapted tool | :10:49. | :10:52.
to open the charity box which children and elderly people had paid | :10:53. | :11:01.
into. Police are praying you can name him today. | :11:02. | :11:04.

This morning, I'm just outside Lincoln at Waddington Fire | :11:17. | :11:30.
and Rescue Training Centre where blue light teams train in this | :11:31. | :11:33.
Neil is with me now. You have travelled to disaster sites and | :11:34. | :11:44.
trained teams here. What is the thinking behind the setup? | :11:45. | :11:49.
We decided to create a realistic environment where firefighters could | :11:50. | :11:56.
train for real, honed skills and be as professional as can be. What | :11:57. | :12:05.
exercise will be happening today? Simulating a major explosion at a | :12:06. | :12:09.
school. Teams going to go in and rescue. Some tools you use include | :12:10. | :12:16.
sniffer dogs. We have a better in sniffer dog here, 15-year-old Holly. | :12:17. | :12:27.
You were given an award. We received from the Queen the MBA and I am very | :12:28. | :12:34.
proud of that. Thank you. I'm going to join Rick Warner, who also trains | :12:35. | :12:39.
the urban rescue teams. Talk me through what we will do. The dogs | :12:40. | :12:45.
indicated there was a life it to behind this concrete block, through | :12:46. | :12:48.
the scent of that person. We need to know in, to wear about SAC | :12:49. | :12:58.
casualties, so we can break through. I shall join you in here. We have | :12:59. | :13:06.
some impressive kit here. We have some seismic kit working on | :13:07. | :13:11.
vibrations. Is that casualties is knocking, coughing or scratching on | :13:12. | :13:16.
the concrete, that picks up. It picks up small vibrations. You can | :13:17. | :13:20.
see the casualties indicating we have some sound the other side of | :13:21. | :13:25.
this. What we do is go to the next piece of kit. Move it to the side. | :13:26. | :13:31.
We have pre-drilled a hole. Drill a hole carefully through. The | :13:32. | :13:34.
casualties might be on the other side of that. We will put the search | :13:35. | :13:39.
camera through. Hopefully we'll be able to see a bit him, see something | :13:40. | :13:46.
there. We can see a face if we turn. It is difficult sometimes to see the | :13:47. | :13:51.
casualties. After a blast, you get cement dust everywhere. If James | :13:52. | :13:59.
gives us a wave... He is alive and well. What next? We break a concrete | :14:00. | :14:12.
triangle. A stitch cut or a rough and ready cut which uses a hydraulic | :14:13. | :14:18.
breaker to break through the concrete so you can retrieve the | :14:19. | :14:23.
victim. They may have been there for days, or for a long time, in that | :14:24. | :14:29.
space. Thank you so much food that is really use. And great to see. | :14:30. | :14:32.
Sounds like another successful rescue. | :14:33. | :14:35.
Here's what's still to come this morning. | :14:36. | :14:39.
The callous burglars, who ransacked a 94 year | :14:40. | :14:41.
I'm deaf to begin with so I never had my hearing aid | :14:42. | :14:46.
It's upsetting, it's really upsetting. | :14:47. | :14:51.
And rescuing passengers from a smoke-filled plane. | :14:52. | :14:52.
How emergency services train for real life disasters. | :14:53. | :14:55.
There's plenty of casualties in there. | :14:56. | :14:57.
Watch out for falling debris on the plane. | :14:58. | :15:03.
But first, police in Greater Manchester need your help to find | :15:04. | :15:06.
the gang responsible for a savage attack on a young father | :15:07. | :15:08.
33 year old Lee Crane has been left with life changing head | :15:09. | :15:14.
Joining me now is Detective Inspector Charlotte Cadden. | :15:15. | :15:22.
Detective, what do we know about the events of that night? | :15:23. | :15:30.
hours of Saturday 2nd April, Lee was walking back from town | :15:31. | :15:34.
towards his family home in the Tonge Moore area. | :15:35. | :15:36.
He remembers walking along George Barton Street when a group | :15:37. | :15:39.
He then continued walking back to his mum's house in Starkie Road | :15:40. | :15:44.
Lee then made a cup of tea and sat on the step at the front | :15:45. | :15:47.
We can see a map of the area here where the incident happened. This is | :15:48. | :15:57.
where Lee was found outside his mum's address. Two men approached | :15:58. | :16:06.
him and asked for a cigarette. They were asking him for the past code of | :16:07. | :16:10.
his phone. The first punch was thrown at Lee Erwin then he was | :16:11. | :16:14.
attacked and it spilled out into the street. Luckily, a witness saw this | :16:15. | :16:19.
and Lee suffered devastating injuries from this attack. They | :16:20. | :16:24.
really are horrific injuries that he suffered. The shape of his head had | :16:25. | :16:29.
changed because a large part of his skull had to be removed. Lee went | :16:30. | :16:34.
down onto the floor, were stamped on, and consequently has had to have | :16:35. | :16:38.
the front part of his skull removed, suffered a bleed on the brain and | :16:39. | :16:42.
memory loss but luckily it is going back now. Slowly he is able to | :16:43. | :16:46.
remember some things about this night, and has been able to give you | :16:47. | :16:49.
a description of some of the attackers. We're looking for men, | :16:50. | :16:52.
three of them in their early 20s. The man who first punched him | :16:53. | :17:04.
was white, with light brown hair, wearing a cap or a hoody | :17:05. | :17:07.
with his hair visible A second man was also white, | :17:08. | :17:09.
with short brown wavy hair wearing a blue top | :17:10. | :17:13.
with orange patches on the arm. The third man was of mixed race | :17:14. | :17:15.
but fairly light skinned, possibly Asian, early 20's, | :17:16. | :17:18.
he had distinctive hair with a possible outgrown | :17:19. | :17:20.
Mohican with shaven hair round the sides and back, | :17:21. | :17:22.
wearing short black coat. And male 4 , Lee describes as older, | :17:23. | :17:24.
mid twenties to early thirties - and was more violent, | :17:25. | :17:27.
seemed like the ring leader. He was was white, slim, | :17:28. | :17:29.
5'7" with short dark He was wearing a black round necked | :17:30. | :17:32.
jumper with a logo on it Let's have another look at the map, | :17:33. | :17:40.
we see the direction they made. Yellow macro you can see where Lee | :17:41. | :17:42.
was found, they ran up Entwistle Street towards Ainsworth Lane, so a | :17:43. | :17:45.
lot of residence there, although it was now in the morning. Luckily his | :17:46. | :17:48.
memory is slowly coming back but he has been left with life changing | :17:49. | :17:50.
injuries so it is just those names that you need people to give you | :17:51. | :17:53.
now. That's right. Thank you for joining us. If anyone has any | :17:54. | :17:55.
information about this brutal attack and the people behind it, please | :17:56. | :17:56.
come forward now. Michelle. Next to Alfreton in Derbyshire, | :17:57. | :18:01.
and when Santa dropped in to a fast food restaurant just before | :18:02. | :18:04.
Christmas, he didn't have Michael works as a manager in a busy | :18:05. | :18:14.
fast food restaurant in Alfreton, Derbyshire. I have worked for the | :18:15. | :18:18.
company for 18 years. The team are great, fantastic. They are very much | :18:19. | :18:24.
a family. They just work with each other, they go out and socialise | :18:25. | :18:29.
with each other as well. So a very close team. On December 19, the | :18:30. | :18:40.
staff were working the last weekend before Christmas, and everyone's | :18:41. | :18:45.
minds were on the festive season ahead. The team worked hard that | :18:46. | :18:48.
night and very much had a good night with it, as well. As his colleagues | :18:49. | :18:54.
were cleaning up, Michael was finishing his paperwork. I was in | :18:55. | :18:57.
the office at the time, approximately around half ten at | :18:58. | :19:05.
night. Outside, a festive figure was approaching the store. But he didn't | :19:06. | :19:16.
have Christmas dinner on his mind. Suddenly, this sinister centre died | :19:17. | :19:20.
in through the hatch and produced a large knife from his bag. Where's be | :19:21. | :19:30.
safe? The terrified staff managed to escape, but in the office Michael | :19:31. | :19:34.
was unaware of the intruder. I did hear a raised voice, I did look at | :19:35. | :19:40.
the CCTV monitor, didn't see anything that was of any concern. So | :19:41. | :19:49.
after that, the door did swing open. Stand-up! And then appeared this man | :19:50. | :19:55.
with black tights on his head, with a centre outfit over the top. | :19:56. | :20:00.
Pointing a knife at my chest, and demanding money out of the safe. He | :20:01. | :20:05.
reminded me he had the knife that he wasn't afraid to use it. I did | :20:06. | :20:11.
envision him stabbing me and thought that would be the end of my life, | :20:12. | :20:20.
basically. Right now! With the knife just centimetres away from his body, | :20:21. | :20:24.
Michael handed over the money but the man wanted more. I don't have | :20:25. | :20:29.
access to the inner department, a security firm come and collect it | :20:30. | :20:32.
and take it to the bank. When he realised there was no more money, | :20:33. | :20:36.
the knifeman left, scattering cash as he went. Michael locked himself | :20:37. | :20:44.
in the store and waited for police. It was a relief that all the doors | :20:45. | :20:48.
were locked, but the adrenaline was racing. Michael and his team have | :20:49. | :20:58.
been deeply affected by their ordeal. One colleague did say that | :20:59. | :21:04.
she was afraid to be on her own. They were scared. The impact on the | :21:05. | :21:11.
staff is massive. The fact that he was wearing a Santa suit in a way | :21:12. | :21:16.
makes it worse, because the initial thoughts when the staff turn round | :21:17. | :21:19.
to see it was that it was Father Christmas, but then to see him | :21:20. | :21:23.
brandishing a knife, the irony of that situation sort of compound of | :21:24. | :21:29.
the fear in them, I think. Despite this, Michael was back in work the | :21:30. | :21:34.
very next day. We have got a very good team here, they are like a | :21:35. | :21:37.
family. So I felt it was necessary to be here to support the team. But | :21:38. | :21:44.
the memory of the robbery has taken its toll on him. Just very | :21:45. | :21:52.
exhausted. The fact that I couldn't sleep at night. Couldn't concentrate | :21:53. | :21:59.
at all at work either, and I did feel quite depressed, to be honest. | :22:00. | :22:05.
What a traumatic ordeal. Just before Christmas as well. If you know | :22:06. | :22:11.
anything about this robbery, please do pick up the phone. | :22:12. | :22:14.
Now, throughout this series we've been covering some of the biggest | :22:15. | :22:17.
From romance cons to fake job adverts and holiday scams. | :22:18. | :22:21.
Well, today we're going to talk about investment fraud. | :22:22. | :22:24.
And I'm delighted to welcome back to the programme for one last time | :22:25. | :22:27.
Detective Inspector Katie Balls from the City of London Police's | :22:28. | :22:30.
National Fraud Intelligence Bureau and Colin Smith who was targeted | :22:31. | :22:32.
Welcome to both of you, Colin if I can come to you first, | :22:33. | :22:37.
We got several phone calls from a company called Advanced Wealth, who | :22:38. | :22:49.
were based in London. They sent me nice products -- brochures of | :22:50. | :22:55.
products called Diamonds, and after if you dealing is I realised they | :22:56. | :23:00.
gave us some information where the diamonds were being stored in Geneva | :23:01. | :23:05.
and Dubai. We went on a bit more, then they passed me over to another | :23:06. | :23:10.
person, another colleague in this company, and we did a fume or | :23:11. | :23:14.
dealings, and one of the dealings went through. We sold the products, | :23:15. | :23:19.
and I received about ?124,000 from them. So at this point, you thought | :23:20. | :23:26.
this was a genuine investment community when a large amount of | :23:27. | :23:29.
money over but you did get a massive amount of money back, so this | :23:30. | :23:33.
legislative was fine. Very, very positive and didn't think any more | :23:34. | :23:37.
about it. So where did it go wrong, Colin? After a couple times more I | :23:38. | :23:42.
thought I would go down to London and see them at the premises. Hence, | :23:43. | :23:48.
no problem at all with that, but of course it was a fraudulent | :23:49. | :23:53.
transaction area, and I realised something was wrong. They even paid | :23:54. | :23:57.
my expenses into my bank account, but at the end of the day I realised | :23:58. | :24:01.
something had happened, and unfortunately I had lost half ?1 | :24:02. | :24:05.
million. That is a staggering amount of money, Colin. How did that make | :24:06. | :24:10.
you feel when you realised this was in fact a huge scam? I was very | :24:11. | :24:16.
frustrated, and I thought of my late mother and father, what they had | :24:17. | :24:19.
done for me throughout my life, and what they had left me, some | :24:20. | :24:23.
inheritance. It had just gone up in smoke. And I just feel very, very | :24:24. | :24:28.
bitter about it. Completely understandable. Katie, how unusual | :24:29. | :24:33.
is this type of scam, what other common trends they are using? Sadly, | :24:34. | :24:39.
they are surprisingly common, so Colin is not on his own. We see in | :24:40. | :24:44.
increasingly these fraudsters are pushing commodities, they are going | :24:45. | :24:50.
for precious jewels, precious metals, carbon credits and forestry | :24:51. | :24:53.
products, and fine wines increasingly. In terms of the scale, | :24:54. | :24:58.
we see about ?1.2 billion lost every year in the UK to this type of | :24:59. | :25:02.
fraud, with the average victim losing ?20,000. As we just heard, it | :25:03. | :25:07.
is not just the financial loss but the terrible psychological impact | :25:08. | :25:10.
they can have as well. More worryingly, we see these forces are | :25:11. | :25:14.
incredibly persuasive, articulate, they have good financial knowledge | :25:15. | :25:20.
and they are very credible. Websites, materials, testimonials, | :25:21. | :25:23.
which make them difficult to spot. In Colin's case, they refunded some | :25:24. | :25:29.
of the money, but it was still a big part of a scam. What can people do | :25:30. | :25:37.
to protect themselves? Genuinely regulated companies will not be cold | :25:38. | :25:42.
calling you, if they are promising you fantastic returns and | :25:43. | :25:46.
downplaying any kind of risk, then it is a scam, put the phone down. | :25:47. | :25:53.
Check the FCA West -- the FSA website. Six impartial financial | :25:54. | :25:58.
advice from a financial adviser, and if you do suspect anything untoward, | :25:59. | :26:04.
or you think it has been fraud, please report it to police. Thank | :26:05. | :26:08.
you becoming in. Now back to Michelle. | :26:09. | :26:11.
Now, I'm here at a state of the art training facility | :26:12. | :26:14.
It's an amazing place, 17 acres crammed with rubble piles, | :26:15. | :26:17.
collapsed buildings and even a fake level crossing - it's almost | :26:18. | :26:20.
Exercises like the ones that happen here go on right across the UK. | :26:21. | :26:25.
And we went behind the scenes with Northants Fire and Rescue | :26:26. | :26:28.
to see how they would cope with a major incident. | :26:29. | :26:34.
Only yesterday and American Airlines flight was evacuated at Heathrow | :26:35. | :26:40.
Airport as smoke filled the plane. Luckily no one was hurt. | :26:41. | :26:48.
More than 125 million people bought a flight from the UK every year. The | :26:49. | :26:56.
overwhelming majority of journeys are problem free, but very | :26:57. | :27:03.
occasionally things can go wrong. And as with any major incident, when | :27:04. | :27:08.
the unexpected happens, all the emergency services need to be ready | :27:09. | :27:14.
to work together. So today, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue | :27:15. | :27:17.
Service are leading a special training exercise in a rather | :27:18. | :27:22.
unusual classroom. We are looking to work with the other emergency | :27:23. | :27:25.
services, police, ambulance and also St John's ambulance, and we are | :27:26. | :27:31.
working with trash and college, involving an exercise of an | :27:32. | :27:35.
emergency landing of a large passenger aircraft. Over the last | :27:36. | :27:39.
few years we have been encouraged century to put more effort into | :27:40. | :27:46.
collaborating more effectively. More than 50 college students are taking | :27:47. | :27:48.
part to make the exercise as realistic as possible. Many roles | :27:49. | :27:55.
are played by students studying travel and tourism, including some | :27:56. | :28:04.
aspiring cabin crew. Not only to test the cabin crew, but emergency | :28:05. | :28:08.
services, we have six fire appliances attending. There are | :28:09. | :28:12.
about ten police staff, ten St John's ambulance. The exercise has | :28:13. | :28:17.
been planned in great detail, but Mick has rigged if you surprise is | :28:18. | :28:22.
on board the plane. This is a smoke generator, it does become quite | :28:23. | :28:26.
scary how realistic it is. We have also got this chap down here, one of | :28:27. | :28:31.
our Fire Service dummies that we have placed underneath the seat, and | :28:32. | :28:34.
we have bulk of the seat back down. So the eye out -- the idea would be | :28:35. | :28:39.
that the breathing apparatus crews were just be escorting, dragging, | :28:40. | :28:42.
lifting people off, they will have to affect a technical rescue as | :28:43. | :28:47.
well. With all the kit in place, it is time for the crew and passengers | :28:48. | :28:54.
to board the plane. At this time, make sure your seats are back, tray | :28:55. | :28:58.
tables are in full upright position and make sure your seat belt is | :28:59. | :29:03.
fastened. As the student air stewards attend to their passengers, | :29:04. | :29:10.
they are told about the problem. Senior cabin crew to the flight | :29:11. | :29:17.
deck. The plane's engine has malfunctioned, and the crew must now | :29:18. | :29:22.
spring into action. Attention, this is an emergency announcement, there | :29:23. | :29:25.
is an engine fire on board the aircraft and we will be making an | :29:26. | :29:30.
emergency landing. We urge you to remain seated and as calm as | :29:31. | :29:34.
possible, Paul passengers follow further cabin crew instructions. | :29:35. | :29:49.
The plane is engulfed in flames. Northants fire and rescue is called | :29:50. | :29:58.
to the scene. There are many casualties in there. Watch out for | :29:59. | :30:05.
falling debris on the plane. Once the scene has been assessed, station | :30:06. | :30:09.
manager Jason takes charge of the situation. We have 63 passengers on | :30:10. | :30:20.
board. A number have been taken off. The smoke means there is zero | :30:21. | :30:25.
visibility, so the firemen must use a thermal imaging camera to search | :30:26. | :30:33.
for passengers. It is then down to the medical staff to assess and | :30:34. | :30:44.
treat the casualties. There is only one passenger left on board. Make's | :30:45. | :30:51.
dummy casualties. Fire crews have spotted it, so carefully unbolt the | :30:52. | :30:56.
seat and drag him out of the plane to safety. | :30:57. | :31:07.
It is the end of the exercise and the students deliver their verdict. | :31:08. | :31:17.
If you put your hand in front of your face... It was very scary. It | :31:18. | :31:24.
felt like it went on for ever but it was a really good experience. It | :31:25. | :31:28.
gave emergency crews are vital experience of working together on a | :31:29. | :31:34.
major disaster. Today was to test command control in such an incident. | :31:35. | :31:40.
It gave individuals another 292 where breathing apparatus, put | :31:41. | :31:46.
aircraft procedures into place. You only have a matter of minutes before | :31:47. | :31:50.
cabins are full of smoke. We are therefore when it does unfortunately | :31:51. | :31:55.
go wrong. In this case, it was only a training exercise and everything | :31:56. | :31:56.
went well. Well, from planes to trains, | :31:57. | :32:03.
we'll be back later to see how crews here at Waddington practise rescuing | :32:04. | :32:06.
people from a crashed Now, the sense of invasion after any | :32:07. | :32:08.
burglary is terrible. But for one pensioner, whose home | :32:09. | :32:14.
was broken into as she slept, I heard nothing. There was nothing I | :32:15. | :32:34.
could do about it. It really is upsetting. 94-year-old Edith Kay | :32:35. | :32:44.
lives by herself in Sutton Bonnington in Nottinghamshire. I | :32:45. | :32:52.
have lived here 11 years. I only came down because my son came down | :32:53. | :32:56.
here and said, I'm not leaving you alone in Scotland. He did have | :32:57. | :33:00.
always found the neighbourhood friendly place. -- Edith has always | :33:01. | :33:09.
found. One night back in April, her happy life took a sinister turn. I | :33:10. | :33:15.
go to bed pretty early. I fell asleep that night. Outside, and | :33:16. | :33:21.
uninvited visitor was lurking. Forcing open a window, the intruder | :33:22. | :33:46.
cracked into Edith's bungalow. I am deaf, some I never heard nothing. As | :33:47. | :33:51.
she slept, the brazen thief searched her bedroom. | :33:52. | :33:59.
Before escaping through the patio door. | :34:00. | :34:08.
I thought I heard footsteps. I turned round and saw nothing in the | :34:09. | :34:20.
hall. I came in here and saw that somebody had been in. I went back | :34:21. | :34:25.
into my room and realised they had stolen a handbag. It was in the | :34:26. | :34:29.
drawer in my bedroom. I phoned the police immediately. Police, | :34:30. | :34:36.
emergency. I have had a burglar. A what? A burglar. Are they still | :34:37. | :34:45.
there? They entered the property while she was asleep and searched | :34:46. | :34:49.
her drawers in the bedroom and taken a purse containing bank cards. The | :34:50. | :34:56.
thief also took one of Edith's 's treasured possessions, a gold chain | :34:57. | :35:01.
with a locket on it. It did have sentimental value because it | :35:02. | :35:06.
belonged to my sister. And they got away with one more item. A tiny box, | :35:07. | :35:11.
a charity box. There was nothing in it. What mentality is it to steal a | :35:12. | :35:22.
charity box? Later, two men are seen on CCTV using Edith's hard to | :35:23. | :35:28.
withdraw more than ?1000. I was very foolish. I had my car in it with the | :35:29. | :35:34.
secret numbers. No way I would keep the numbers with my card again. At | :35:35. | :35:38.
that time they were together and that is how they got the money. Two | :35:39. | :35:43.
months on, the events of that night were always on Edith's mind. I feel | :35:44. | :35:50.
they should be caught Achilles nobody should go through this. -- | :35:51. | :35:54.
because nobody. It is very upsetting. | :35:55. | :35:59.
Here with me is police investigator Adam Karimjee. | :36:00. | :36:02.
Adam, just talk us through the timeline of that night. | :36:03. | :36:10.
We know Edith went to bed at about 9 o'clock that night, | :36:11. | :36:14.
at her home in Sutton Bonington, near Loughborough. | :36:15. | :36:18.
Sometime between then and around 11.20pm, at least one | :36:19. | :36:24.
They selected a purse and a necklace from the handbag which was precious | :36:25. | :36:31.
to her. At 11:30pm on the same night, her card was used at the ATM | :36:32. | :36:38.
machine at the Co-op. An hour later, half past midnight, the card was | :36:39. | :36:42.
used again to withdraw more cash from Morrisons at Loughborough. We | :36:43. | :36:49.
saw CCTV of people using these sterling card. We need names for | :36:50. | :36:57.
these males. If anyone does recognise them, please do get in | :36:58. | :37:02.
touch. It is worth mentioning that Edith kept her PIN number with her | :37:03. | :37:08.
card. She struggled to remember her PIN number. She fell into the trap | :37:09. | :37:13.
of keeping up with her card. We strongly advise people against this. | :37:14. | :37:17.
We would advise not to write it down at all. If you really need to write | :37:18. | :37:22.
it down, keep it separate from your card. Contact your bank and they can | :37:23. | :37:26.
advise you have to change the pin to something more memorable. Thank you | :37:27. | :37:29.
very much. Time for Wanted Faces now | :37:30. | :37:34.
starting with Jose Manico. He was due to stand trial | :37:35. | :37:36.
in December last year for charges of rape, | :37:37. | :37:38.
sexual assault and indecent assault The trial went ahead without him | :37:39. | :37:40.
and he was found guilty and jailed Manico is 44 and has links | :37:41. | :37:45.
to the West Midlands, but it's thought he may | :37:46. | :37:48.
have fled abroad. You may know him though as Rico, | :37:49. | :37:50.
Tribes, Lorzo Cameron, Kemar Myers Detectives want to question him | :37:51. | :37:57.
about the fatal stabbing of a man at a flat in Southampton | :37:58. | :38:01.
earlier this year. Suika has links to North London | :38:02. | :38:03.
and Hampshire and has a scar on the right side of his face | :38:04. | :38:06.
and another on the top of his head. He has a tattoo of the words "work | :38:07. | :38:11.
like a slave, eat like a king" He's described as dangerous, | :38:12. | :38:14.
so if you know where Detectives in Gloucestershire | :38:15. | :38:17.
want to speak to him in connection to an attack in a nightclub, | :38:18. | :38:24.
in which a man was slashed Cohen is 35, has a Birmingham | :38:25. | :38:27.
accent, and links And finally today, this | :38:28. | :38:30.
is 34-year-old Steven Bennett. He was found guilty of drug dealing | :38:31. | :38:37.
at a Liverpool Crown Court in December, but didn't return | :38:38. | :38:40.
for sentencing and is now Bennett is known to travel around | :38:41. | :38:42.
the North West of England and has He has a scar under his right eye | :38:43. | :38:47.
and another on his left wrist. If you know where any of these men | :38:48. | :38:54.
are, get in touch using Tim Joyce is with me now | :38:55. | :38:57.
here in Lincolnshire, where another dramatic | :38:58. | :39:04.
rescue is underway. Tim, you run these disaster | :39:05. | :39:06.
exercises regularly Just how realistic | :39:07. | :39:08.
are these scenarios? It is very realistic. We train the | :39:09. | :39:21.
person to put the core skills into place and then train people on the | :39:22. | :39:25.
environment. In this case, a rail crash. The most difficult thing is | :39:26. | :39:29.
putting all that together and making sure it is a dynamic scenario to | :39:30. | :39:36.
train on. Of course. The guys are busy in front of us. What is the | :39:37. | :39:42.
exercise? The train has been derailed after it hit two cars at | :39:43. | :39:49.
the crossing. Because of this stanchion being made of hard metal, | :39:50. | :39:54.
it is designed to carry power lines. It is made of a strong steel. Fire | :39:55. | :39:59.
crews will struggle to cut through it. The use of hot cutting equipment | :40:00. | :40:07.
cut straight through that. The users molten metal to burn through it. It | :40:08. | :40:14.
works on an oxygen system passing through such a small aluminium tube. | :40:15. | :40:19.
It is giving more access to get the casualties out and work along the | :40:20. | :40:28.
train, as we have seen before. A really useful piece of kit. | :40:29. | :40:34.
Nationally, these teams have hot cutting, the next level of equipment | :40:35. | :40:39.
to deal with any major incident. Great to see. Tim, I shall head over | :40:40. | :40:44.
to you. Just before I have a chat with you, it is important to note | :40:45. | :40:48.
that training like this is going on across the UK. The number of cities | :40:49. | :40:53.
are taking part in large-scale disaster exercises. The biggest one | :40:54. | :40:57.
in Europe happened in London earlier this year. It involved a scenario | :40:58. | :41:02.
where a collapsed building went on to a cheap station. There were 70 | :41:03. | :41:07.
organisations than 2000 volunteers involved. It costs three quarters of | :41:08. | :41:11.
?1 million. The training you do here is not as expensive as as that. This | :41:12. | :41:19.
is a gold standard of training. Having these scenarios for people to | :41:20. | :41:25.
work on is fantastic. We have an option to use some software that | :41:26. | :41:30.
allows us to recreate some of these events in the virtual world. What | :41:31. | :41:38.
examples do you have? We had an incident at a farm. It was a fairly | :41:39. | :41:45.
innocuous incident. It transpired there were agrochemicals and | :41:46. | :41:51.
fertilisers. It turned into quite an interesting scenario. We can | :41:52. | :41:56.
recreate that scenario in order for all troops to get training from that | :41:57. | :42:03.
scenario. Thank you so much. It is great to see. The guys are really | :42:04. | :42:07.
busy. It has been a successful mission. Back to you. | :42:08. | :42:15.
Several people have been in touch about investment fraud. Company | :42:16. | :42:23.
names are very similar to legitimate companies. You may have seen in the | :42:24. | :42:28.
news, police officers were called about the body of Melanie Hall. Her | :42:29. | :42:33.
body went missing and we had a special appeal here on the 20th | :42:34. | :42:37.
anniversary of her disappearance. Please do keep any information that | :42:38. | :42:38.
you may have coming in on the case. Now, Michelle, where | :42:39. | :42:41.
will you be tomorrow? Rav, we're off to Birmingham | :42:42. | :42:46.
where we'll be in the heart of the city centre, where police | :42:47. | :42:48.
have to deal with everything from major festivals to the problems | :42:49. | :42:52.
that come with a busy night time We will look at the latest | :42:53. | :42:55.
distraction technique being used by the gangs | :42:56. | :43:11.
