Hello and welcome to Crimewatch Roadshow. | :01:06. | :01:12.
the programme that really does help police nick the bad guys. | :01:13. | :01:14.
Six years on - do you know who killed Wayne Powell, | :01:15. | :01:18.
And the sniffer dogs, on the trail of dangerous, | :01:19. | :01:21.
Why are they not in there? Because they are illegal, not allowed. | :01:22. | :01:37.
And for the final leg of the Roadshow | :01:38. | :01:39.
road trip, Michelle's just a few miles away from our Cardiff studio - | :01:40. | :01:42.
Hi Rav, I'm at a South Wales Fire and Rescue training ground | :01:43. | :01:46.
More than 5800 deliberate fires were started in South Wales last year. | :01:47. | :01:56.
These guys are hoping to fight back against fire starting. More later. | :01:57. | :01:59.
And our first appeal this morning shows just how devastating | :02:00. | :02:05.
Mitchell and Helen have lived and worked in cities for most of their | :02:06. | :02:12.
lives. When I first met Helen I was living in Cardiff and she said, I | :02:13. | :02:16.
want to come back to the country, I don't want to live in the city. They | :02:17. | :02:23.
decided to buy a country house and found their dream home in Gilwern, | :02:24. | :02:28.
Monmouthshire. It had not been lived in for two years when we came. It | :02:29. | :02:34.
looked a bit unloved and lonely. We knew when we bought the house it was | :02:35. | :02:38.
a lifetime project. We spent the subsequent eight years renovating | :02:39. | :02:46.
it, section by section. Last summer after years of building disruption, | :02:47. | :02:49.
Helen and Mitchell were finally able to move in. It was as if this overly | :02:50. | :02:56.
stretched elastic band of tension just went... And it was a kind of | :02:57. | :03:05.
feeling that, I'm here, I'm home. But their happiness was short lived. | :03:06. | :03:13.
Three months after moving in, Helen and Mitchell were in London for the | :03:14. | :03:25.
weekend. At half past four, the phone went. We knew in that moment | :03:26. | :03:36.
that there was something wrong. You'd better come home, your house | :03:37. | :03:43.
is on fire. We were out of the hotel in 15 minutes. I think you said to | :03:44. | :03:52.
me, I'm not sure, I think we've got to brace ourselves to see something | :03:53. | :03:56.
quite bad. But nothing could prepare them for what they were about to | :03:57. | :04:03.
see. There were about five fire engines and loads of firefighters | :04:04. | :04:08.
all over the place and all this smoke. I think at that point we knew | :04:09. | :04:09.
we had lost everything. Germanic the roofing had gone, the | :04:10. | :04:26.
ceilings had all gone, the windows had all them out, fireplaces, when | :04:27. | :04:32.
they were not made of stone, all melted. I thought, and I left | :04:33. | :04:40.
something on, had I done something really stupid? But investigators had | :04:41. | :04:44.
already found evidence that the fire had been started deliberately. The | :04:45. | :04:49.
police officer said was there any graffiti on the building when you | :04:50. | :04:56.
left it? Then we knew. The character of the whole incident changed | :04:57. | :05:01.
completely from being an accident to something we may have been | :05:02. | :05:05.
responsible for to something someone had perpetrated against us. None of | :05:06. | :05:11.
it made any sense to us. Mitchell and Helen were devastated by the | :05:12. | :05:15.
loss of their home but there is no question in their minds about the | :05:16. | :05:19.
way forward. We have to rebuild. You cannot leave it as it is. In | :05:20. | :05:25.
Germanic months since the fire the couple still have no idea who | :05:26. | :05:33.
started it. Closure might put an end to this questioning of why. The idea | :05:34. | :05:41.
of somebody wanting to do this, I still find it bewildering. I am more | :05:42. | :05:47.
concerned that they feel that firstly, that they can do it, and | :05:48. | :05:52.
secondly, they could do it again, and next time somebody might be in | :05:53. | :05:54.
the house. A beautiful house, lost | :05:55. | :05:56.
in a matter of hours. DS Sarah Goodchild from Gwent police | :05:57. | :05:58.
is here with us. Sarah, Helen and Mitchell spent | :05:59. | :06:08.
eight years restoring the home, a real Labour of love, completely | :06:09. | :06:14.
destroyed. Hi, yes it was, the fire made the roof caving and that's | :06:15. | :06:17.
destroyed the whole house, they are naturally devastated by this. Two | :06:18. | :06:22.
you have any clues as to who might have targeted the property? Because | :06:23. | :06:27.
of the scale and intensity of the fire friends and opportunities were | :06:28. | :06:31.
limited but because of graffiti left at the scene, offensive, yet | :06:32. | :06:36.
unfounded, we believe this is a case of mistaken identity. There might | :06:37. | :06:40.
have been a break in attempt might be for the fire. We can't be | :06:41. | :06:46.
certain, we believe there was an alarm activation that night, | :06:47. | :06:50.
Saturday 18th going into Saturday night in September last year, | :06:51. | :06:53.
treated as a false alarm yet it adds weight to our believe that this was | :06:54. | :06:57.
a targeted property, albeit mistakenly. Someone must know who | :06:58. | :07:02.
did this. We would appeal for anyone with any information to come forward | :07:03. | :07:08.
and speak to us. Mitchell has put up a private reward of ?50,000, that | :07:09. | :07:14.
would be for any information that leads to the arrest of anyone | :07:15. | :07:18.
responsible for this. Thankfully they were not there on the night | :07:19. | :07:22.
they could have lost their lives as well. On a positive note they | :07:23. | :07:26.
started rebuilding the home. Yes, they are determined to be storage to | :07:27. | :07:31.
its original state before this awful fire. Sarah, thank you. If you have | :07:32. | :07:36.
any information, please get in contact with us. Next we need you to | :07:37. | :07:42.
look at today's selection of crooks caught on camera. This man is | :07:43. | :07:53.
walking this couple to a bank to withdraw money from heating repairs, | :07:54. | :07:57.
the problem is that they don't need any work done. He leaves them there | :07:58. | :08:00.
and says someone else will be there to pick up the cash. Sure enough | :08:01. | :08:05.
after 20 minutes per second man joins the couple coming he stays | :08:06. | :08:09.
with them and even follows them to the cashier's window. He waits while | :08:10. | :08:13.
they withdraw ?1500 of their savings. He then leaves the bank | :08:14. | :08:17.
with the couple and the hard and cash. The work on their heating is | :08:18. | :08:23.
never carried out. Can you name these despicable men? This | :08:24. | :08:33.
78-year-old man walks into a bank in Watford to withdraw a large amount | :08:34. | :08:38.
of his savings. Whilst inside he loves and jokes with the cashier 's. | :08:39. | :08:43.
Before leaving with ?10,000 in two Brown envelopes. Police believe that | :08:44. | :08:50.
this man is loitering outside waiting. At the top of the screen | :08:51. | :08:54.
you can see the pensioner walking to his car, parked outside the bank. | :08:55. | :08:58.
Suddenly the man grabs him from behind and throws into the ground, | :08:59. | :09:05.
running with his hard earned cash. He is seen here still running | :09:06. | :09:10.
minutes later, clasping the stolen envelopes. Do you know this | :09:11. | :09:19.
despicable thief? January, at a nightclub in Oxford, this reveller | :09:20. | :09:23.
was being shown the door by security staff. He was escorted out. But he | :09:24. | :09:30.
was not happy. Minutes later, as the employee returned to work, he ran | :09:31. | :09:34.
after him. The determined nightclubber followed the doorman at | :09:35. | :09:39.
the stairs, desperate to get back inside, grabbed the security man and | :09:40. | :09:45.
threw him down the stairs. The four fractured and dislocated the | :09:46. | :09:48.
employee's shoulder. As the doorman they injured, the man calmly walked | :09:49. | :09:55.
past him and left. Can you name this disgruntled nightclubber? If you | :09:56. | :10:00.
recognise anyone come you know what to do. Michelle? Thanks. Earlier in | :10:01. | :10:09.
the programme police appealed for your help to try to catch the person | :10:10. | :10:14.
who burned down a home not far from here in Gilwern, Monmouthshire. To | :10:15. | :10:20.
tell us more about the challenges of tracking arsonists, this is fire | :10:21. | :10:27.
investigator Dewi Jones. How much of the problem is this? Par in the last | :10:28. | :10:35.
year in South Wales, deliberate fires have resulted in 900 injuries | :10:36. | :10:40.
and more than five deaths. It is difficult to identify the | :10:41. | :10:42.
perpetrators because of the nature of arson, the conviction rate is | :10:43. | :10:49.
only 8%. What are you looking for at the scene of a fire? While going in | :10:50. | :10:56.
that I will discuss it with the cruise, use my understanding and | :10:57. | :10:59.
look at the degree of burning and then adopt the scientific method to | :11:00. | :11:05.
eliminate all possible causes and one remains. Dewi, thank you. Many | :11:06. | :11:10.
fire investigators use an interesting tool, in the form of a | :11:11. | :11:20.
four-legged friend. I am joined by arson dog Willow. You have been in | :11:21. | :11:25.
the Fire Service had 25 years, had they help you? They are a fantastic | :11:26. | :11:29.
as it because they are looking for tiny traces of ignitable liquid that | :11:30. | :11:35.
could be missed by other means. Petrol, diesel, paraffin, anything | :11:36. | :11:38.
that will accelerate the rate of fire beyond which it would normally | :11:39. | :11:45.
burn. We've got a fire has, talk us through what Willow will do now. | :11:46. | :11:49.
We're going to check all these burned areas on the carpet tiles. | :11:50. | :11:56.
The dog needs to discriminate between areas of normal burning and | :11:57. | :12:01.
identify the seat of fire. She is sniffing to find out what caused the | :12:02. | :12:07.
fire. She has given a positive indication on this title. Well done! | :12:08. | :12:13.
Good girl. We can take this for forensic analysis. It is critical | :12:14. | :12:17.
that we find other evidence. We will carry on the search to find | :12:18. | :12:22.
something else. So she's looking for extra evidence? On clothing or on | :12:23. | :12:28.
anything else that may link suspect to the scene. She's found something. | :12:29. | :12:33.
What has she found. Good girl! Good girl! What she has found is a | :12:34. | :12:40.
writer. And from that we may be able to get fingerprints and DN a. It is | :12:41. | :12:47.
not just what caused the fire, it is who caused it and she has identified | :12:48. | :12:52.
evidence. It's critical that we link suspect to the fire scene and with | :12:53. | :12:56.
that evidence we can take that to court. Thank you, this is great to | :12:57. | :13:01.
see. Now from deliberate fires to those caused by the worrying trend | :13:02. | :13:06.
in dangerous illegal cigarettes. It is a trade run by organised | :13:07. | :13:12.
criminals. Illegal tobacco is not regulated and is often smuggled into | :13:13. | :13:16.
the UK. It costs the Treasury millions. But it also costs lives. | :13:17. | :13:28.
It is totally mind blowing. There could be no formal identification of | :13:29. | :13:31.
my mother because the fire had been so intense. They needed DNA samples | :13:32. | :13:42.
from me. Four years ago, 71-year-old Juno was killed in a house fire | :13:43. | :13:48.
caused by an illegal cigarette. She was disabled, she was at home | :13:49. | :13:55.
sitting in her chair. We presume she had other fallen asleep or fallen | :13:56. | :13:57.
ill and dropped the cigarette that she was smoking into her chair and | :13:58. | :14:02.
it continued to burn, and the fire took hold and took hold of the whole | :14:03. | :14:14.
chair. The fire was called to the Mac caused by this illegal Russian | :14:15. | :14:17.
brand of cigarette that does not meet UK safety standards. All | :14:18. | :14:21.
cigarettes sold you must pass laboratory tests to make sure that | :14:22. | :14:24.
they self extinguish when they are not being smoked. | :14:25. | :14:32.
By having what typical speed bumps in the paper, the smoker cannot get | :14:33. | :14:41.
past them. He puts a legitimate cigarette to the test. To pass, what | :14:42. | :14:46.
we are expecting is that the cigarette. Way before it gets to the | :14:47. | :14:51.
filter. And that's exactly what it does. But that's what -- Bulut what | :14:52. | :15:02.
happens with an illegal bran. If that was your pillow or your | :15:03. | :15:06.
mattress, the evidence speaks for itself. A high risk of fire. In | :15:07. | :15:14.
Derbyshire, Trading Standards have made tackling the illegal tobacco | :15:15. | :15:19.
trade a top priority. In December last year, 2015, we had our biggest | :15:20. | :15:24.
ever seizure of cigarettes and tobacco, something like 1.8 million | :15:25. | :15:29.
cigarettes and 600 kilograms of hand-rolling tobacco. We've had | :15:30. | :15:33.
seven prosecutions for people selling illegal tobacco. Three of | :15:34. | :15:39.
those people got sent to prison. The illegal tobacco unit relies on | :15:40. | :15:49.
specially trained dogs like Yoyo and Scamp to fish out the evidence. | :15:50. | :15:53.
Without the dogs, we would find some but not as much as we do at the | :15:54. | :15:57.
moment. There are sophisticated hiding places that the criminals are | :15:58. | :16:02.
using, sliding wall panels, remote control operated panels that work on | :16:03. | :16:10.
a car alarm key fob. Today the team are carrying out targeted searches | :16:11. | :16:14.
at two newsagents' they suspect are selling illegal to Roco product. | :16:15. | :16:20.
Whilst trading standards officer Adrian talks to the shop assistant, | :16:21. | :16:25.
Scamp is set to work. He soon catches a cent under the counter. | :16:26. | :16:34.
Tell me about those. I did ask you when I came in, if you got | :16:35. | :16:39.
e-cigarette... You didn't tell me you'd got those under the counter. | :16:40. | :16:45.
Tell me about those. They are for... Why are they not in there? No, not | :16:46. | :16:50.
in there, because they are illegal once. The cigarettes are seized for | :16:51. | :16:58.
testing. Before word gets around, the officers head to the next shop. | :16:59. | :17:06.
This time it is Yoyo's turn and he is very interested in the wall | :17:07. | :17:10.
behind the tilt it up in a hidden compartment, Yoyo has found a stash | :17:11. | :17:15.
of 700 illegal cigarettes and some rolling tobacco, worth hundreds of | :17:16. | :17:19.
pounds. The tobacco seized here and in the first raid will now be sent | :17:20. | :17:23.
for testing and the shops will continue to be monitored by Trading | :17:24. | :17:28.
Standards. Adrian is pleased with survey's resulted top we found | :17:29. | :17:32.
illegal tobacco at all the promises we visited and while they are | :17:33. | :17:35.
modest, we will continue to work in this way in order to keep ahead on | :17:36. | :17:39.
the illegal tobacco problem and to protect local consumers and | :17:40. | :17:46.
businesses. It has been four years since June died in a house fire. | :17:47. | :17:52.
It's awful. The smells won't go away. It won't get any easier. It's | :17:53. | :17:57.
not just my mum, there have been other fire deaths in the UK caused | :17:58. | :18:04.
by illicit cigarettes. It's just a sign of the times. Everybody's | :18:05. | :18:07.
trying to buy cheap items but these are killers and I just urge people | :18:08. | :18:14.
to stop buying them. . The trade and save lives. | :18:15. | :18:28.
-- it will end the trade. We need your help. This woman was | :18:29. | :18:32.
walking home along Daisy Street in the area of Coseley, between the | :18:33. | :18:36.
towns of Dudley and Wolverhampton. Was around 11:45am and she was | :18:37. | :18:39.
approached by a man riding on a mountain back. He snatched her | :18:40. | :18:43.
handbag from the victim's shoulder with such force he pulls out of the | :18:44. | :18:47.
ground. She didn't stand a chance and was left shaken and badly | :18:48. | :18:52.
bruised. Take a look again. The suspect was wearing a grey | :18:53. | :18:55.
tracksuit. If you recognise him, please do get in touch. | :18:56. | :19:02.
Still to come this morning... The plucky pensioner who saw off her | :19:03. | :19:08.
attackers with some nifty moves. I got in a real bad temper, I'll be | :19:09. | :19:15.
honest, and I just went like that. I said, I'll give you another for | :19:16. | :19:18.
Binnie one. And as this year's road show draws | :19:19. | :19:23.
to a close, we look back at some of the highlights from four weeks. | :19:24. | :19:28.
But now it's time for a look at today's wanted faces. | :19:29. | :19:33.
Police forces around the country are asking for your | :19:34. | :19:35.
Detectives in Essex want to question him after a teenager was kidnapped | :19:36. | :19:41.
Blane is 19 and has links to Essex and London. | :19:42. | :19:44.
Next is Ian Robert Tyler, although this photo is over 15 years | :19:45. | :19:47.
old, so his appearance will have changed. | :19:48. | :19:49.
He was jailed for ten years for importing class-A | :19:50. | :19:52.
Tyler has friends and family in Essex | :19:53. | :20:01.
and Greater London, but police believe he could now be abroad. | :20:02. | :20:04.
Third is 36-year-old Tommy Doyle, although he calls | :20:05. | :20:06.
Officers in North Yorkshire want to question him after a man | :20:07. | :20:09.
was assaulted in his home, suffering two fractured arms and | :20:10. | :20:12.
A number of possessions were also stolen. | :20:13. | :20:15.
Doyle has connections across the UK and Ireland. | :20:16. | :20:18.
Finally for today and this series, we have Constantin Marius Toderica. | :20:19. | :20:22.
Detectives want to question him in connection with a burglary | :20:23. | :20:25.
He's also wanted for questioning about immigration offences. | :20:26. | :20:31.
Toderica is 41 and originally from Romania, but now has links | :20:32. | :20:34.
to London, especially around Charing Cross. | :20:35. | :20:36.
He's known to smoke roll-up cigarettes. | :20:37. | :20:40.
If you recognise any of these faces, make sure | :20:41. | :20:42.
Text CW, a space and then your message. | :20:43. | :20:52.
Next, police in Gloucester need your help to try and catch the man they | :20:53. | :21:07.
believe is responsible for three vicious sets attacks which happened | :21:08. | :21:11.
in the city on a single night back in January. Joining me now is DS Jon | :21:12. | :21:16.
Thompson from Gloucestershire police. Tell us more about the | :21:17. | :21:22.
sexual assault. Thank you. In the early hours of Saturday January the | :21:23. | :21:26.
9th of this year, two young women left a nightclub in Eastgate Street, | :21:27. | :21:33.
Gloucester, with a takeaway. They were housemates and friends and they | :21:34. | :21:35.
walked back through the city centre home. They went via Kings Square and | :21:36. | :21:42.
went down Kingsholm Road. We have CCTV of a male following these young | :21:43. | :21:48.
women down Kingsholm Road. They then turn into Sweetbriar Street and into | :21:49. | :21:52.
Swan Road and it is then, at around 4am, a stranger attacks them both. | :21:53. | :21:58.
These were sexual assaults and the concerning thing for us with the | :21:59. | :22:01.
level of violence used. Both women were punched and knocked to the | :22:02. | :22:05.
floor. One of them managed to ring the police, as did a local resident | :22:06. | :22:09.
who had seen what has happened. The offender ran off. There was a | :22:10. | :22:13.
further incident, was in there? Yes, the first incident happened at why | :22:14. | :22:22.
am -- at 1am, short time after that, a second incident happened. This was | :22:23. | :22:27.
in the car park of Go Outdoors, on the junction of Barton Street and | :22:28. | :22:33.
try away. A young woman was raped and, again, there was a high degree | :22:34. | :22:37.
of violence used. You believe these cases are linked, don't you? That's | :22:38. | :22:41.
right it took the descriptions given by both the victims in the first | :22:42. | :22:48.
incident and the third victim are very similar, the man in his 20s | :22:49. | :22:53.
with olive skin, short, dark hair, five to 5'7" tall, with dark eyes, | :22:54. | :23:01.
and that similarity in the disruption, the nature of the | :23:02. | :23:05.
offence and the violence, which is quite unusual, as well as the | :23:06. | :23:07.
location and the timings, leaders to think it is the same person. There | :23:08. | :23:14.
was a man caught on CCTV that might? Yes, we have CCTV footage of a man | :23:15. | :23:18.
who was in the area at the relevant times and his behaviour causes some | :23:19. | :23:21.
concern. He appears to be loitering in the area, walking up one street | :23:22. | :23:26.
and down the same street and then taking an interest in a group of | :23:27. | :23:31.
young women, and there are two occasions, which is quite worrying, | :23:32. | :23:34.
where he pays particular attention and follows two lone females. I | :23:35. | :23:40.
really need to identify who this is, to see if we are able to eliminate | :23:41. | :23:45.
him throughout increase. Thank you very much. Any information, please | :23:46. | :23:48.
do get in touch. On Tuesday will be six years to the | :23:49. | :23:52.
day since Wayne Powell was murdered by a lone gunman in east London. The | :23:53. | :23:57.
39-year-old father of six was shot dead outside his gym. His killer has | :23:58. | :24:01.
never been brought to justice but detectives and his family are now | :24:02. | :24:04.
hoping that someone will finally come forward with the information | :24:05. | :24:06.
they are so desperate for. And joined by Wayne pot partner Anne | :24:07. | :24:11.
Boriel and the detective in the case, DC this could both from the | :24:12. | :24:17.
Metropolitan Police. -- Jamie Piscopo. I know this is difficult | :24:18. | :24:22.
for you to speak about but what can you tell me about Wayne is a person? | :24:23. | :24:28.
He was an excellent son, a loving father and a wonderful partner. What | :24:29. | :24:37.
can you remember about that day when you were told the news that he had | :24:38. | :24:44.
been shot? It's all a bit of a blur at the moment, but Wayne left and he | :24:45. | :24:50.
didn't come back, so it was just a shock to know that he had left in | :24:51. | :24:57.
the morning and not returned in the night, so it was just a shock. Had | :24:58. | :25:01.
you spoken to him throughout the day? It was a normal day and he said | :25:02. | :25:05.
he was going to be home soon? Yes, but he never returned. And then you | :25:06. | :25:10.
got that fateful knock on the door from the police, which you wouldn't | :25:11. | :25:15.
wish on anyone. DCI Jamie Piscopo, it is a tragic case but what do we | :25:16. | :25:18.
know about what happened to Wayne mandate? It is a terrible case, | :25:19. | :25:25.
rather. What we believe is, it was a planned attack. He was approached by | :25:26. | :25:32.
this lone gunmen and shot. We are still unclear as regards to the | :25:33. | :25:37.
motive. As has been mentioned, Wayne was a family man, who worked for | :25:38. | :25:41.
London Underground the several years. He was a part-time DJ and we | :25:42. | :25:45.
can't think of any reason why anyone would want to kill him. We've got a | :25:46. | :25:49.
map. Talk me through the map of where this occurred. Wayne was at a | :25:50. | :25:55.
private gym. He had been a member of this gym for about ten years. Was a | :25:56. | :26:00.
converted garage in Coningsby Gardens. He was in that gym until | :26:01. | :26:05.
about 10:10pm. He left that gym and went to his car, which was near | :26:06. | :26:12.
Higham Station Avenue. Witnesses have said that they see a male | :26:13. | :26:20.
approach Wayne and they hear Wayne say, "Oh, no," and he tries to run | :26:21. | :26:24.
away but, unfortunately, he's shot four times. The person who shot him | :26:25. | :26:29.
then runs off towards Chingford Mount Road. We can see some CCTV of | :26:30. | :26:36.
Wayne in that gym and this is the last believed citing that we have of | :26:37. | :26:39.
him, and this was literally just before? We believe this is just | :26:40. | :26:45.
before he left the gym to go to his car on that night. At the moment, | :26:46. | :26:50.
you don't have the answers that you need. Hopefully this appeal will | :26:51. | :26:54.
help that. Anne, if anyone is at home and has anything they haven't | :26:55. | :26:58.
passed on the police, what would you say to them? Please come forward. | :26:59. | :27:03.
Anything counts. We just need some closure, Tuwai Wayne was taken from | :27:04. | :27:07.
us and his kids left without a father. Yoyo thank you very much for | :27:08. | :27:13.
joining us. If you have any information you think that helped | :27:14. | :27:16.
the detectives, call the usual number now and we will make sure the | :27:17. | :27:19.
incident room number is on our website for your team, Jamie. I | :27:20. | :27:24.
should add that there is a ?20,000 Crimestoppers reward for information | :27:25. | :27:28.
leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for this | :27:29. | :27:35.
murder. Thank you both very much. IMac South Wales Fire and Rescue | :27:36. | :27:39.
this morning, talking about the problem of arson attacks and | :27:40. | :27:42.
deliberately set grass fires are becoming a real issue, especially in | :27:43. | :27:47.
recent years, with more than 1700 occurring in this corner of South | :27:48. | :27:52.
Wales. Joining me now is Craig Cope, a firefighter. Grass fires can | :27:53. | :27:54.
spread at an alarming rate, currently? Very quickly, especially | :27:55. | :27:59.
with wind and fuel. These fires spread really quickly. We've got | :28:00. | :28:04.
some drone footage of a grass fire captured by a member of the public. | :28:05. | :28:10.
You can see in that house by -- how high the flames are. Talk me through | :28:11. | :28:17.
this piece of kit. This is our Hazmat rig and we are showing the | :28:18. | :28:25.
cruise Howell to use the beaters. In the past, crews were trained on real | :28:26. | :28:28.
fires and so we are trying to move forward now. You have a new weapon | :28:29. | :28:32.
at your disposal which helps tackle the fires. This is our Polaris, a | :28:33. | :28:38.
six Wheel Drive vehicle which was provided by the Welsh Government to | :28:39. | :28:42.
tackle these fires atop it has a 200 litre water tank and it means we can | :28:43. | :28:45.
drive off-road to the fires and start working. We have lightweight | :28:46. | :28:53.
kit. We have a tool box where we can take things out of the tool box and | :28:54. | :28:57.
go out and burn before the fires start, to clear the land. Great | :28:58. | :29:04.
progress. Thank you very much. South Wales Fire and Rescue are really | :29:05. | :29:07.
working hard to prevent would-be arsonists from striking that first | :29:08. | :29:10.
match in the first place. Joining me is Steve O'Connell who runs the | :29:11. | :29:13.
Cardiff branch of young firefighters. Talk me through your | :29:14. | :29:16.
role and how important it is to prevent fires. I ran one of the | :29:17. | :29:22.
local branches of young firefighters and we deal with deliberate fires | :29:23. | :29:25.
set through anti-social behaviour, through engagement, and we teach the | :29:26. | :29:30.
young people about the work the Fire Service does and the role of the | :29:31. | :29:34.
firefighter. Something we talk about a lot is deliberate fire setting, | :29:35. | :29:38.
anti-social behaviour, hoax calls and attacks on firefighters and, | :29:39. | :29:41.
more importantly, the consequences of these things, so, in other words, | :29:42. | :29:46.
the young people know that while a firefighter is dealing with a | :29:47. | :29:49.
deliberately set fire, they can't carry out their primary role, which | :29:50. | :29:53.
is protecting the community from opposite fires and rescuing people | :29:54. | :29:56.
involved in road traffic collisions. Thank you very much. It is great to | :29:57. | :30:01.
see the drills these guys are doing. Harry, our young firefighter, talk | :30:02. | :30:05.
me through how important this scheme is for you. It is really important. | :30:06. | :30:10.
I learned skills on drills which would help me in a future career in | :30:11. | :30:15.
the Fire Service. I'm educated on grass fires and arson and that sort | :30:16. | :30:18.
of thing, so we can then educate our peers and help prevent it. It is | :30:19. | :30:24.
really useful, and good luck in your career as a firefighter. Seriously | :30:25. | :30:25.
impressive stop. For most of us our car is our main | :30:26. | :30:37.
mode of transport and with regular services and the MOT we expect it to | :30:38. | :30:40.
be safe yet with growing pressure for cheaper car parts many are | :30:41. | :30:46.
turning to dealers online, the problem is that many are | :30:47. | :30:49.
counterfeit, potentially dangerous. How can we tell the genuine from the | :30:50. | :30:55.
fake? Graham Mogg is an expert on counterfeiting, key is here to tell | :30:56. | :31:01.
us more. Why is there such a demand for this? Most people like a bargain | :31:02. | :31:04.
and the availability of cheap goods online leads them to buy counterfeit | :31:05. | :31:09.
vehicle parts. Unfortunately why they might be saving money in the | :31:10. | :31:14.
short-term in the long term it can damage the vehicle and potentially | :31:15. | :31:19.
cause harm. Counterfeit parts are not cheap generic parts. These are | :31:20. | :31:23.
the ones pretending to be genuine even though they are clearly not. | :31:24. | :31:29.
The genuine parts of the ones we would advise consumers to buy. These | :31:30. | :31:35.
are very poor quality fake goods, branded to make consumers believe | :31:36. | :31:39.
they are buying the genuine article. You've got some examples, we will | :31:40. | :31:43.
move through them quickly. Oil filters. How could that be bad? | :31:44. | :31:48.
Difficult for a consumer to tell the difference between the counterfeit | :31:49. | :31:52.
and the genuine although the counterfeit structure will | :31:53. | :31:54.
disintegrate in the vehicle and could potentially cause fire, | :31:55. | :31:57.
causing harm and danger to the driver. Brake pads, one is genuine | :31:58. | :32:05.
and one is counterfeit. Difficult for a consumer to tell but you would | :32:06. | :32:09.
expect a break disk to have friction to stop a vehicle. The counterfeit | :32:10. | :32:14.
parts does not do that. It may stop it for a short period of time, | :32:15. | :32:18.
potentially that could disintegrate and cause injury or harmful | :32:19. | :32:24.
accident. The generic parts are tested, the counterfeit parts have | :32:25. | :32:30.
no such testing. We have an Alloy wheel. It looks good and costs a lot | :32:31. | :32:35.
money yet it is not tested like the genuine article and could | :32:36. | :32:39.
potentially cause an accident, disintegrate and shutter. You don't | :32:40. | :32:45.
even want to think about what could happen in that case. This jacket has | :32:46. | :32:50.
been given as an example, it is a counterfeit motorcycle jacket. What | :32:51. | :32:54.
problems could you have with that? It looks nice looking and doesn't | :32:55. | :32:59.
give you protection, if you come off the motorcycle he must expect some | :33:00. | :33:03.
sort of safety to stop injury, that particular article would not stop | :33:04. | :33:08.
that safety. A lot of padding, it must be heavily regulated, no such | :33:09. | :33:12.
regulation there. What can people do to make sure they don't get these? | :33:13. | :33:17.
The main thing is to buy from legitimate retailer or aftermarket | :33:18. | :33:21.
sales premises rather than of the Internet because you never know what | :33:22. | :33:25.
you are buying, if it's genuine, if you think you've got a fake product | :33:26. | :33:29.
reported to trading standards with the citizens advice bureau. BMW have | :33:30. | :33:38.
a consumer video on the website, and that advises consumers about the | :33:39. | :33:43.
threats and the dangers of could fit automotive parts. Like any other | :33:44. | :33:48.
manufacturer they don't want these in they have genuine parts and they | :33:49. | :33:55.
are helping, helping other people to avoid buying counterfeit parts. | :33:56. | :33:59.
Thank you very much, that's very scary, very useful information, | :34:00. | :34:03.
thank you for coming in. Next, let's nail the gang of thugs who got more | :34:04. | :34:07.
than they bargained for when they attacked in Newport pensioner. | :34:08. | :34:16.
Eight-year-old widow Maria Baynham likes to keep busy. I do gardening | :34:17. | :34:21.
and knitting, all my toys I've knitted, you name it, I've done it | :34:22. | :34:25.
and I like meeting people. In her younger days she travelled the world | :34:26. | :34:29.
with her husband, who was in the Navy. Going to different countries, | :34:30. | :34:34.
learning about different cultures and ways was lovely. The first trip | :34:35. | :34:39.
abroad was Malta, and then three years in Singapore, went to Hong | :34:40. | :34:44.
Kong, and then Germany, and all around the continent. After husband | :34:45. | :34:49.
passed away Maria settled in the Ridgeway area of Newport, South | :34:50. | :34:54.
Wales. I met so many people here, all the neighbours are lovely. I | :34:55. | :34:56.
like it here. But the events of one evening back | :34:57. | :35:07.
in March have shaken her. Maria had taken a stroll to post a letter. It | :35:08. | :35:15.
was half past eight, and think it was, I posted the letter at the | :35:16. | :35:22.
Ridgeway pub. I came back, up the hill, and I heard laughter, and I | :35:23. | :35:27.
looked left and right and back and I could not see no one. And the blue, | :35:28. | :35:37.
one boy got behind me with his arm like that, I could not scream if I | :35:38. | :35:44.
wanted to. And the other one, he just went and punched me in the | :35:45. | :35:51.
face. And I got in a real bad temper, I'll be honest, and I just | :35:52. | :35:58.
went like that, right. I said you want this one, I'll give you another | :35:59. | :36:09.
for anyone! Let's go! And they ran. My arm still hurts from the hit! | :36:10. | :36:14.
Maria had used moves that she learned at self defence classes in | :36:15. | :36:19.
Singapore 50 years ago. Martial arts, I think they call it. That's | :36:20. | :36:24.
the one I did with my elbow. I just thought, you're not going to get me. | :36:25. | :36:31.
I won't say what I said and eyebrow! But Maria had been hurt. I won't say | :36:32. | :36:41.
what I said under my breath. I was a bit dazed, I was a bit shaky at | :36:42. | :36:45.
first, and then I thought, come on, girl, you are a tough one. I never | :36:46. | :36:50.
told anyone. I did not want to. I did not want any fuss. Then my | :36:51. | :36:54.
brother and sister-in-law came up and said you better report that to | :36:55. | :36:59.
the police. Since the attack Maria has put on a brave face and has | :37:00. | :37:06.
become a local celebrity. Karate kid is my nickname now! I am a tough one | :37:07. | :37:14.
really. But police are treating the incident as a CD is assault. I think | :37:15. | :37:20.
it has had a long-lasting impact, more than she gave credit for. I am | :37:21. | :37:24.
aware that she has woken in the middle of the night hearing that | :37:25. | :37:28.
voice again and obviously the psychological effect is still going | :37:29. | :37:31.
on and I think it will affect Maria's quality of life for some | :37:32. | :37:36.
time yet. We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area | :37:37. | :37:39.
on the evening of the attack to come forward or anyone with information | :37:40. | :37:43.
about this horrific attack, they need to contact us and speak to us. | :37:44. | :37:49.
I hope they will get caught. And I hope that they give them a good | :37:50. | :37:54.
punishment for it. Some mothers must know who it is. This is one of those | :37:55. | :38:00.
things, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, I think. | :38:01. | :38:06.
I am joined by Sergeant Jitka Tomkova-Griffiths of Gwent Police. | :38:07. | :38:12.
Maria is obviously made of stern stuff but how is she now? Still not | :38:13. | :38:17.
back to herself physically, the bruising has taken a long time to | :38:18. | :38:22.
heal due to her age budget has not lost her sense of humour which shows | :38:23. | :38:27.
how tough she really is! What could have been the motive for this? No | :38:28. | :38:32.
motive. Maria went out to post a letter, she did not have a handbag | :38:33. | :38:38.
or her purse with her, all she had were her huskies, this was pure | :38:39. | :38:41.
reason is endless violence towards an innocent old person, and unusual | :38:42. | :38:46.
case, one we are keen to solve. What do we know about these people? Two | :38:47. | :38:52.
men and one woman, the woman wearing a red woolly hat and the man who | :38:53. | :38:55.
punched Maria wearing a dark tracksuit with white stripes down | :38:56. | :38:59.
the side. They were all between 18-25 years old. Where this happened | :39:00. | :39:05.
is a quiet place. This doesn't happen. The Ridgeway area of Newport | :39:06. | :39:11.
is quiet and has mainly elderly residents so the group were out of | :39:12. | :39:15.
their place. We believe because of the way that the attacked and when | :39:16. | :39:18.
Maria fought back the likelihood was that their attackers and friends had | :39:19. | :39:23.
been talking about this so if anyone knows who is involved we want them | :39:24. | :39:27.
to come forward, do the right thing and tell us who did it. Get in touch | :39:28. | :39:33.
with any information. Thank you, Jitka, for joining us. If you can | :39:34. | :39:38.
help, please call. Just time for a quick update on your calls and how | :39:39. | :39:42.
they've helped, lots of you have been in touch about the case | :39:43. | :39:46.
yesterday we showed when a woman in Somerset was attacked by a couple | :39:47. | :39:50.
who stole her bank card. Some of you have said that you have been victims | :39:51. | :39:54.
of the same deception yourself, we still need the names of the couple | :39:55. | :39:58.
caught on camera. And last week we showed you the terrifying robbery at | :39:59. | :40:03.
the Toby Coventry in Rotherham, two workers held up by robbers with some | :40:04. | :40:08.
shotguns, and fax to your calls someone has been arrested. Police | :40:09. | :40:11.
say the investigation is still going on. Over the last four weeks we have | :40:12. | :40:16.
covered serious crimes and unsolved cases from across the country but | :40:17. | :40:21.
the programme macro is also about getting hands on, meeting people on | :40:22. | :40:27.
the road and in the studio whose work really makes a difference. And | :40:28. | :40:30.
we have had some great fun as well. It's time to catch crooks. This is | :40:31. | :40:37.
Crimewatch Roadshow. It's fast. You may have noticed we are standing | :40:38. | :40:40.
well back for this demonstration! Who are your friends? Thank you for | :40:41. | :40:45.
sleeping all the way through that integrate! -- that interview! I'm | :40:46. | :40:59.
not going to fall! Are you going to be all right? I just want to use the | :41:00. | :41:04.
four myself what this looks like. Caroline, tell me what I'm looking | :41:05. | :41:15.
at. I just need to catch my breath. I can't believe what I just did. It | :41:16. | :41:24.
is an embarrassing photo of me! Vehicle fails to stop. Fascinating | :41:25. | :41:38.
stuff, let's go back to Michelle. Who thinks she might fancy being a | :41:39. | :41:42.
dog handler when you grow up? All of you? Four! Brilliant. | :41:43. | :41:56.
An interesting experience, right. I cannot believe what I've just seen. | :41:57. | :42:09.
He was driving without tyres. These guys properly intercepted it and my | :42:10. | :42:16.
heart is beating. I am in shock. And after covering 1200 miles, bringing | :42:17. | :42:22.
