Scottish street trials rider and YouTube star Danny MacAskill

0:00:020:00:04

is about to embark on an extraordinary new project,

0:00:040:00:07

taking on a life-threatening challenge that has never been attempted before -

0:00:070:00:12

to create an ambitious new film,

0:00:120:00:14

promote his native home, the Isle of Skye,

0:00:140:00:17

and achieve global viral success.

0:00:170:00:20

This is awesome!

0:00:200:00:22

The aim? To ride a bike on Skye's notorious Cuillin Ridgeline.

0:00:220:00:26

If I injure myself doing something stupid then that's the whole filming off.

0:00:290:00:32

Over the past six years, Danny MacAskill's bike riding ability

0:00:400:00:43

has taken him to every corner of the globe.

0:00:430:00:46

His unique blend of technical riding

0:00:460:00:48

and jaw-dropping stunts has made him a household name

0:00:480:00:51

and turned a lifetime hobby into a successful career.

0:00:510:00:54

I don't really think too deeply about why it is

0:00:540:00:56

I ride my bike, it's just something I love doing.

0:00:560:00:59

Danny's success is down to

0:00:590:01:01

a collection of creative internet films

0:01:010:01:03

showcasing his incredible talent.

0:01:030:01:06

Totalling over 100 million views,

0:01:060:01:07

these films form the backbone

0:01:070:01:09

to Danny's global recognition.

0:01:090:01:11

You're always pushing to do

0:01:110:01:13

something brand-new you've never tried before.

0:01:130:01:16

With such a history of success,

0:01:160:01:17

Danny's challenge continues to be searching for new concepts

0:01:170:01:20

and locations to better his previous films.

0:01:200:01:23

I've definitely got a high bar to set to make something different.

0:01:240:01:28

For his latest project,

0:01:280:01:30

Danny has returned to his childhood home, the Isle of Skye.

0:01:300:01:33

Although I get to travel the world now, Skye is very much my home.

0:01:330:01:37

You maybe don't appreciate it when you live here

0:01:370:01:39

but it's quite a sort of magical place.

0:01:390:01:41

He's looking to Skye's famous Cuillin mountains to draw

0:01:410:01:44

inspiration for a new film.

0:01:440:01:46

The Cuillin Ridge is definitely for me

0:01:460:01:48

the sort of centre of Skye, the backbone of the island.

0:01:480:01:51

17 peaks and 11 Munros make up the vast Cuillin mountain range,

0:01:520:01:57

at the centre of which lies the infamous Inaccessible Pinnacle.

0:01:570:02:01

The idea for the film is to feature Danny riding his bike

0:02:030:02:06

and performing tricks at locations on and around the 12km ridge line.

0:02:060:02:11

To help him realise this goal,

0:02:110:02:13

Danny has teamed up with friend and film-maker Stu Thomson.

0:02:130:02:18

Working with Danny, I think I have a very good understanding

0:02:180:02:21

of what he has to do, and I think he has a very good

0:02:210:02:23

understanding of the filming side.

0:02:230:02:25

But this film is like nothing they've done before.

0:02:250:02:29

Danny talked about riding the Cuillin Ridge.

0:02:290:02:31

The main thing with that, though, is that he hadn't actually

0:02:310:02:34

been on the Cuillin Ridge when he said he wanted to make a film there.

0:02:340:02:37

To get an idea of the size of the challenge,

0:02:390:02:42

Danny and Stu set off on their first ever climb up the ridge for a recce.

0:02:420:02:46

It appears it's blowing a force-ten hooley,

0:02:490:02:52

and we're on the top of the Inaccessible Pinnacle.

0:02:520:02:55

It's one thing doing it on ground level where you've got

0:02:550:02:57

your van parked out of shot or you're in a set

0:02:570:03:00

or something like that. It's another thing trying to do this

0:03:000:03:03

four hours in on a hike on the top of a ridge line.

0:03:030:03:06

Deary me! HE CHUCKLES

0:03:060:03:08

I think the hardest thing about it is definitely the access.

0:03:080:03:11

Before we even, like, roll on the camera

0:03:110:03:13

we're going to have to be walking for three or four hours

0:03:130:03:16

hiking up huge, steep hills, scrambling, rock climbing parts.

0:03:160:03:21

A very severe, very sharp, knife-edge ridge.

0:03:210:03:25

Not the place you want to be taking your bike, that's for sure.

0:03:250:03:29

Despite being faced with such an extreme environment,

0:03:290:03:32

Danny and Stu have committed to the project and put together

0:03:320:03:35

a crew equipped to deal with whatever challenges they may face.

0:03:350:03:39

Everyone's very experienced

0:03:390:03:40

and can deal with all sorts of different situations,

0:03:400:03:43

and it's just a really strong unit, you know?

0:03:430:03:45

It's a really strong group,

0:03:450:03:46

and it's so, so important on a shoot like this to have that.

0:03:460:03:49

The last project we did, we did 150 takes on one trick,

0:03:490:03:52

whereas here we don't have that luxury

0:03:520:03:54

cos we've got two weeks, we've got the weather,

0:03:540:03:56

we don't know what's going to happen, you know?

0:03:560:03:58

We just have to react all the time and just get as much done as we can.

0:03:580:04:02

But filming in arguably

0:04:020:04:04

the most dangerous mountain range in the UK

0:04:040:04:06

comes with a serious risk.

0:04:060:04:08

What scares you most about this film?

0:04:080:04:10

Somebody getting hurt.

0:04:100:04:12

Despite the significant risks involved,

0:04:140:04:17

as dawn breaks on the opening day of the shoot,

0:04:170:04:19

the crew's attention turns back

0:04:190:04:21

to the traditional Scottish problem of the weather.

0:04:210:04:24

What time is it? About seven o'clock?

0:04:240:04:27

And we're...

0:04:270:04:28

going to have a little trudge up a hill.

0:04:280:04:31

Basically, the bit Danny's going to ride

0:04:310:04:34

is that white bit up there.

0:04:340:04:37

It's, erm...

0:04:370:04:40

some view up there, apparently.

0:04:400:04:43

Erm, yeah...

0:04:430:04:45

It's looking fairly cloudy, but we're told by

0:04:450:04:49

the weather forecasters and Matt,

0:04:490:04:52

who's...he knows everything about the Cuillins,

0:04:520:04:55

that it's going to get really nice later on,

0:04:550:04:57

so we're going to risk it and walk three hours.

0:04:570:05:00

The crew are faced with an arduous 3,000ft climb with heavy equipment.

0:05:010:05:07

So today is our first day up the Cuillins, which is...

0:05:070:05:12

yeah, pretty hard going.

0:05:120:05:15

There's no path up it, pretty much just straight.

0:05:150:05:18

I don't know what we're looking at, it's probably even past 45 degrees.

0:05:180:05:22

Doing a hideous slog up onto the ridge.

0:05:220:05:26

Pretty nice place to come and carry a miniature helicopter and batteries

0:05:260:05:31

and big, random pieces of metal.

0:05:310:05:34

-STU:

-What have we been doing this morning?

0:05:340:05:36

-Suffering.

-OTHERS LAUGH

0:05:360:05:38

But the pork pies taste nice.

0:05:400:05:43

I mean, to be fair, it's my call to put the crew through this,

0:05:450:05:48

however, I took advice from the local expert,

0:05:480:05:52

which is Matt, over here. So, we took Matt's advice and he said,

0:05:520:05:55

"Ah, by midday it'll be clear."

0:05:550:05:57

So I think it's... What is it? Five to midday now?

0:05:570:05:59

-Five to. We've got five minutes.

-So we've got five minutes.

0:05:590:06:01

With mist covering the entire ridge,

0:06:010:06:03

lugging the hi tech aerial filming equipment could all be for nothing.

0:06:030:06:08

Yesterday I thought it was the most amazing bit of kit I've ever seen

0:06:080:06:11

and now I could happily just see it roll down the hillside.

0:06:110:06:14

OTHERS LAUGH

0:06:140:06:16

The mist shows no sign of clearing.

0:06:160:06:19

We've been up here for about three hours or so with Danny.

0:06:190:06:25

He seems pretty excited.

0:06:250:06:26

SNORING

0:06:290:06:31

It's quite tempting just to, like, just to roll him.

0:06:310:06:34

SNORING

0:06:360:06:38

Ten to four. At last, there's a hint of sun.

0:06:400:06:44

Whoo!

0:06:440:06:45

Nearly nine hours after setting off, filming can finally begin.

0:06:450:06:50

The cloud cleared and it was just

0:06:580:07:00

really amazing to be getting our first shots on the ridge.

0:07:000:07:04

We just got the most spine-tingling views.

0:07:050:07:09

It's kind of special. It almost makes it more worthwhile when you

0:07:090:07:12

put that much effort in and you get the return of those amazing shots.

0:07:120:07:15

The crew have had a successful first day,

0:07:150:07:18

but there are still some far bigger challenges to come.

0:07:180:07:21

After just a few hours' sleep,

0:07:250:07:27

it's up again for the most ambitious day of the shoot.

0:07:270:07:31

It's about four o'clock in the morning,

0:07:310:07:33

and the plan today is we're going to head up

0:07:330:07:35

to the Inaccessible Pinnacle.

0:07:350:07:37

The aptly named Inaccessible Pinnacle is a pillar of rock

0:07:370:07:41

that forms the summit to one of Scotland's toughest Munros.

0:07:410:07:44

The plan is to get up to the Inaccessible Pinnacle

0:07:440:07:46

and get Danny up there with his bike.

0:07:460:07:48

Well, we don't know for sure, but we imagine it's the first time

0:07:480:07:51

a bike's been ever on the Inaccessible Pinnacle.

0:07:510:07:53

Considering the start of this week, it just showed it was going to be

0:07:530:07:56

horrible conditions, and it's just changed so much, you know? It's...

0:07:560:08:01

I can actually see the tops of pretty much all the Cuillins,

0:08:010:08:03

which is a rare thing.

0:08:030:08:06

So, yeah, I think it's going to be awesome.

0:08:060:08:08

6am, and we're up on the ridge.

0:08:160:08:19

Definitely worth the early start.

0:08:190:08:23

But now the real challenge begins:

0:08:230:08:25

filming a shot of Danny and his bike standing at the top of the pinnacle,

0:08:250:08:28

to create the film's most iconic image.

0:08:280:08:31

With a massive vertical drop on either side,

0:08:320:08:36

a mistake could prove fatal.

0:08:360:08:38

The drop on one side is over-hanging and infinite,

0:08:380:08:40

and the drop on the other side is even greater.

0:08:400:08:43

Ooft! Right, this time. Are you ready?

0:08:430:08:47

-OK.

-Excellent. That was quite hard work, actually.

0:08:470:08:51

The top of the In Pinn has been a dream of mine for years.

0:08:510:08:54

It was quite an amazing moment when I was stood on top of the rock.

0:08:540:08:58

This is awesome!

0:08:580:09:00

Yooo! HE LAUGHS

0:09:110:09:14

This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.

0:09:140:09:18

Unbelievable. Like, it's everything we wanted.

0:09:180:09:21

It's everything we wanted to... I guess, you know, he's not riding,

0:09:210:09:24

but just showing off Skye for what it is and...

0:09:240:09:28

Can't say too many people have been up there with a bike.

0:09:280:09:31

With the summit shot complete, Danny repositions to allow

0:09:310:09:34

a shot of him climbing up the pinnacle with his bike.

0:09:340:09:37

You ready, Stu?

0:09:370:09:38

So far, everything is going to plan.

0:09:380:09:40

I'm just going to unclip quickly.

0:09:400:09:42

Dude, keep the rope on.

0:09:420:09:44

I'm... This is... This bit's fine.

0:09:440:09:47

It makes it harder for me to walk with. OK.

0:09:490:09:53

It's important to me to kind of be doing that stuff in a kind of

0:09:560:09:59

legit manner, I don't want to be kind of fooling people.

0:09:590:10:02

Here we go. HE EXHALES

0:10:020:10:04

Sorry about that, man.

0:10:040:10:06

-CREW MEMBER LAUGHS

-You're mad!

0:10:060:10:08

He doesn't listen to anyone, like.

0:10:080:10:10

He just unclips himself and goes, "Ah, it'll be fine."

0:10:100:10:14

Scrambles up while we're all down here going, "What you doin'?!"

0:10:140:10:18

I just had to look away and just get Stu to do the filming dead quick.

0:10:180:10:23

Climbing it one hand with a bike on your back, that's pretty different.

0:10:230:10:26

So I guess that's where he just shows how good he is.

0:10:260:10:29

Buoyed by the success at the Inaccessible Pinnacle,

0:10:290:10:33

the crew traverse over to film Danny ride the notorious Collie's Ledge,

0:10:330:10:37

a thin path that weaves perilously close to a heart-stopping drop.

0:10:370:10:41

It's a strange one, actually,

0:10:410:10:42

compared to what he does a lot of the time cos he's not doing a trick,

0:10:420:10:45

he's literally riding along a bit of trail.

0:10:450:10:47

But the difference is on the side of the trail it's, like...

0:10:470:10:50

massive exposure.

0:10:500:10:52

Collie's Ledge is a very exposed part of the Ridge,

0:10:530:10:56

and there's a huge drop down into Coire Lagan.

0:10:560:11:00

I'm good to go when you guys are.

0:11:000:11:02

-ON RADIO:

-'OK, go for it when you're ready.'

0:11:020:11:04

FRUSTRATED GROAN

0:11:100:11:11

You're faced with a sort of line where

0:11:110:11:14

if it goes wrong, there's literally no coming back from it.

0:11:140:11:16

HELICOPTER BUZZES

0:11:160:11:18

-ON RADIO:

-'OK, Danny, go for it.'

0:11:200:11:22

For me, it's just another bit of trail that you just

0:11:260:11:29

have to keep your wits about you on

0:11:290:11:31

and make sure you don't clip a pedal or a handlebar that sends you off over a few-hundred-foot drop.

0:11:310:11:36

-Can you reset that?

-Yeah, that sort of speed?

0:11:360:11:39

Yeah, that speed's good when we do it, yeah.

0:11:390:11:41

That first hop is hard work.

0:11:520:11:56

How was it looking?

0:11:560:11:59

No way!

0:11:590:12:00

That is so sick!

0:12:030:12:05

It's a relentless schedule of long, gruelling days,

0:12:070:12:09

but the film is starting to come together.

0:12:090:12:12

Tough day yesterday, so I think today we're a little bit more relaxed.

0:12:120:12:16

I say a little bit - we've still been hiking for two hours.

0:12:160:12:20

My legs are a bit gubbed from, you know, the last four days

0:12:200:12:23

of missioning about the place, so we'll see how it goes.

0:12:230:12:28

Shooting at locations all around the ridge,

0:12:280:12:31

the crew and Danny work tirelessly to capture all the shots they need.

0:12:310:12:35

It's very important for me to feel that I've done my best.

0:12:350:12:38

You know, until I've done that, I won't be happy.

0:12:380:12:43

But it definitely comes through in the end result cos you've both

0:12:430:12:46

worked as hard as you can to get that shot as perfect as possible.

0:12:460:12:50

We got back last night, we all just literally

0:12:500:12:53

looked at the footage straightaway and we were just like, "Yes!"

0:12:530:12:56

Going into the final few days,

0:12:560:12:58

there are still more shots to be captured right at the summit,

0:12:580:13:01

along with an introduction and a huge final trick for the film.

0:13:010:13:04

It's the last day of filming up on the ridge

0:13:080:13:11

and the crew have moved to the north end to film on one of the most

0:13:110:13:14

famous peaks of the Black Cuillin.

0:13:140:13:17

Today we're up Sgurr nan Gillean.

0:13:170:13:19

Definitely the most prominent Black Cuillin, the most famous one.

0:13:190:13:22

And the plan is to go up onto the ridge line here,

0:13:220:13:24

right at the north, and a couple more shots riding the ridge line,

0:13:240:13:28

and then start to film Danny on the descent.

0:13:280:13:31

Once again, they are faced with a long hike to the summit.

0:13:310:13:34

Morale is high, I would say. Everyone is pretty happy with

0:13:350:13:39

the footage we've got so far, I think.

0:13:390:13:42

The only thing we're battling today is a little bit of fatigue.

0:13:420:13:45

Oh, it's been well worth it. I love the pain. I love the punishment.

0:13:450:13:48

You can't beat it.

0:13:480:13:49

My feet are just kind of covered in blisters and stuff today.

0:13:490:13:52

Just pain. We're all going through a bit of pain

0:13:520:13:54

but we're absolutely loving it.

0:13:540:13:56

Just say when you boys are ready.

0:13:560:13:58

OK?

0:13:580:13:59

This is a bit steeper than I thought.

0:14:060:14:08

It's quite hard to tell from here

0:14:080:14:09

cos we're so far away how technical the trail is,

0:14:090:14:12

but I think it's just really steep and really difficult to ride.

0:14:120:14:15

Ah! HE CHUCKLES

0:14:210:14:23

Arrgh!

0:14:230:14:25

Sorry, guys!

0:14:260:14:28

'Yeah, I'd say I've had my fair share of injuries.'

0:14:280:14:30

I've definitely had a few broken bones here and there

0:14:300:14:33

and I've had a few sort of long-term injuries

0:14:330:14:36

such as a torn disc in my lower back.

0:14:360:14:38

-You ready?

-Yeah, ready.

0:14:380:14:40

Got it.

0:14:480:14:49

That looked really good, actually.

0:14:500:14:52

With more crucial ridge shots now in the can,

0:14:520:14:55

Danny wants to attempt another big trick for the film.

0:14:550:14:58

Just near the top here they've got these huge big flat boulders

0:14:580:15:01

and Danny's just looking at doing a gap.

0:15:010:15:04

Hopefully this gap's going to be quite easy.

0:15:040:15:06

Literally everything Danny looks at every day is with

0:15:060:15:10

the mindset of riding something, you know?

0:15:100:15:12

Whether it's walking down the street in the middle of Glasgow

0:15:120:15:15

or whether it's driving on a road somewhere in the Highlands

0:15:150:15:18

or on the top of the Cuillins, like, it's just the way his mind works.

0:15:180:15:22

BLEEP.

0:15:240:15:26

That is hellishly rough.

0:15:260:15:28

OK.

0:15:330:15:34

I think...

0:15:380:15:40

The tyre's going.

0:15:440:15:46

Arrrghhh!

0:15:460:15:48

It was difficult because it was a really, really big impact.

0:15:480:15:51

It's one of these situations where actually

0:15:510:15:53

because we're riding a mountain bike in this film

0:15:530:15:55

it made it a lot harder.

0:15:550:15:56

HE GROANS

0:16:000:16:02

Arrghh!

0:16:020:16:04

I really was struggling to hold it together on landing

0:16:040:16:06

and get out of the shot.

0:16:060:16:08

I feel like hoofing the bike down the hill, to be honest.

0:16:080:16:10

Each time, both myself and the bike were making some funny noises.

0:16:100:16:14

I've actually got a sore head because the impact's that hard.

0:16:140:16:18

I was amazed that the bike took what it did, you know?

0:16:180:16:21

It was really heavy going.

0:16:210:16:23

'You know, I know I can do it,'

0:16:320:16:33

so I'll just kind of keep going until I get it done.

0:16:330:16:37

It's the penultimate day of filming,

0:16:420:16:44

and the crew are taking to the water to create the film's opening scene.

0:16:440:16:48

Today we're down in Elgol right by the coast

0:16:480:16:50

and we're going to shoot the opening scene for the film.

0:16:500:16:53

The opening scene is basically going to be Danny in a rowing boat

0:16:530:16:56

and he's going to be rowing over towards Loch Coruisk.

0:16:560:17:00

It's going to be a real nice way

0:17:000:17:01

to start the film with a bit of character.

0:17:010:17:04

I'm just going to be out there looking like I'm by myself,

0:17:040:17:07

rowing away, you know, to go and start the ridge.

0:17:070:17:10

Yeah - cheesing it up.

0:17:100:17:12

The whole thing should be quite, kind of...quite emotive,

0:17:120:17:16

but then really just powerful when you kind of see the Cuillins

0:17:160:17:19

and the film begins properly when he gets on his bike.

0:17:190:17:22

Energy's low but morale's good.

0:17:220:17:25

Like, you're all tired, you're all knackered,

0:17:250:17:27

you come back in and you look at the footage and it's like,

0:17:270:17:30

"Wow!" you know? It really makes you realise it was totally worth it.

0:17:300:17:33

All the sort of hiking,

0:17:330:17:35

all the sort of sitting round and just the waiting.

0:17:350:17:37

Yeah, everything about it.

0:17:370:17:38

It's like, you get back, look at the footage and it's like,

0:17:380:17:41

yeah, you can definitely see this is going to be really, really good.

0:17:410:17:45

You're just going in towards this incredible landscape

0:17:500:17:52

and it's just looking so threatening and huge in front of you.

0:17:520:17:55

We see Danny, we see all these little detailed shots

0:17:570:18:00

and then it's just like, boom, here's where he's going.

0:18:000:18:03

I'm doing a little bit of token rowing.

0:18:050:18:07

It's the first time I've rowed in years, which is quite good fun.

0:18:070:18:09

Once across to edge of Loch Coruisk, Danny has an idea for a trick

0:18:090:18:13

that will test his balance in the opening sequence for the film.

0:18:130:18:18

As always, nothing's ever... nothing's ever easy.

0:18:180:18:21

Aarrrgh!

0:18:250:18:26

We'll see how it goes. We'll see how it goes.

0:18:260:18:28

-APPLAUSE

-Yeah!

0:18:400:18:42

Good. I'm pretty happy. Nice wee line.

0:18:460:18:49

Another good day. I can't quite believe it.

0:18:520:18:54

I'm not quite sure what we've done to deserve it,

0:18:540:18:56

but the results of the film seem to be working out.

0:18:560:19:00

The final day of the shoot has arrived,

0:19:090:19:12

and Danny has a difficult new trick that he has left to the very end.

0:19:120:19:15

The trick he's doing, you call a bump front flip.

0:19:180:19:20

He's sort of basically just crashing into a barbed wire fence

0:19:200:19:24

and using it to do a front flip.

0:19:240:19:26

And Danny's the only person in the world that can do it.

0:19:260:19:29

Planning such a trick is one thing,

0:19:290:19:31

but, for Danny, making it happen is a far bigger undertaking.

0:19:310:19:34

Cos there's technique involved, this is, like, where...

0:19:360:19:39

This is, to me, where you can get genuinely hurt,

0:19:390:19:42

whereas being up the Pinnacle, Collie's Ledge, nothing like that.

0:19:420:19:46

Agh! It gives me the fear so bad!

0:19:460:19:49

The hardest thing is just getting it mentally straight that you can do it.

0:19:490:19:53

Right. We're going to do it, we're going to do it.

0:19:530:19:56

-Holy

-BLEEP!

-LAUGHTER

0:20:040:20:07

There's a really fine line between hitting the fence too hard

0:20:070:20:09

and your feet coming off the pedals...

0:20:090:20:12

..and also not hitting the fence hard enough so you don't make it round.

0:20:140:20:17

With Danny now confident he can get the rotation needed,

0:20:170:20:21

the crew remove the crash mats.

0:20:210:20:22

It's time to go for the final shot.

0:20:220:20:25

Arghh! Goddamn it!

0:20:250:20:28

It's just a scary thing to do and it doesn't matter how talented

0:20:280:20:31

he is, you know, he's still pushing himself,

0:20:310:20:34

so it's just as scary for him as us doing something way more basic.

0:20:340:20:38

Dropping in.

0:20:380:20:39

-APPLAUSE

-Yeah!

-Yeah, buddy!

-Yeah, dude! Whoo!

0:20:440:20:48

The final shot is in the can.

0:20:510:20:53

After a week of the most spectacular scenery,

0:20:530:20:56

lugging camera gear the equivalent of half the height of Everest,

0:20:560:20:59

and capturing some spectacular riding along the Cuillin Ridgeline,

0:20:590:21:03

it's been a successful shoot.

0:21:030:21:05

Everything's worked so well.

0:21:050:21:07

You know, the whole team, we've all been pushing so hard every day

0:21:070:21:11

to kind of make it happen and...

0:21:110:21:13

I don't know. It's been pretty wild.

0:21:130:21:16

How do we top this, like? You know, the Cuillins are just stunning,

0:21:170:21:21

the landscape's been beautiful all week and we've had this weather,

0:21:210:21:24

so it's like, "OK, what the hell are we going to do next?"

0:21:240:21:27

Definitely far exceeded my expectations of what

0:21:290:21:32

we were going to get done in this time. So, yeah, it's been amazing.

0:21:320:21:38

So, as the crew celebrate the end of the shoot,

0:21:380:21:41

let's see the results of their hard work.
