The Kimono Handmade in Japan

To make a kimono is very complicated.

What happens is that for different stages of making a kimono,

you have different experts.

This process gives the very subtle colours of Oshima Tsumugi,

which is a variation of brown, green, grey and,

because of this very

subtle but rich colour, Oshima Tsumugi is very famous.

Around the 15th-16th century,

what you now would recognise as a kimono started to appear.

What used to be the undergarment became the outer garment.

Where western dress can be very varied in shape, the shape of kimono

has not changed almost at all and even today we use the same shape.

It's quite simple because you don't need any buttons, you don't need

any zippers, you just wrap yourself in it and put a waistband around it.

But you could make it as elaborate as you wanted to,

using different dyes, using different types of embroidery.

So, you could be very creative with the simple style.

It's very cumbersome, you might have to take ten lessons

to be able to properly dress yourself in a kimono.

It's not only about wearing it, after you undress yourself

you have to hang your...hang your kimono for the night.

And then, after that, fold it carefully,

put it in individual paper garment boxes and store it.

It's like a tuxedo and a ball gown here.

You don't wear a tuxedo daily, you don't wear your ball gown,

it's reserved for special occasions.

It's the same thing in Japan, now, for a kimono.
