Meet Jackie Green, an 18-year-old Leeds lass | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
with a dream of making it in the heady world of high fashion. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
It's so much fun! I like being the centre of attention. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
I am ringing with good news... | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
Jackie has reached the first round of the Miss England competition... | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
Victory dance! | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
And hopes that winning the coveted pageant will catapult her to model stardom. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
To win Miss England would be crazy cool. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
So far, so normal Leeds lass. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
But, Jackie Green Beauty Queen was born... | 0:00:32 | 0:00:36
..a boy named Jack. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
I sent an email round the class saying, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
"I'm a girl trapped in a boy's body." | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
But it's tough being trans. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
I was 14 and two 40-year-old men beat me up. What dickheads! | 0:00:49 | 0:00:54
Now she's fighting back. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
We're not freaks, we're just trying to get on with our lives. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Trying to prove herself at the country's top beauty pageant. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
At five-years-old I was diagnosed as transgender. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
OK, that's fantastic. Good luck. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
But will she be accepted as one of the girls? | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
-Please will you hug me? -Oh, babe! | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
It's not a big deal to me, and it shouldn't be to anyone else | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
because I'm a girl. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
This programme contains some strong language. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:23
Jackie lives at home in the small Yorkshire town of Guiseley | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
with her three brothers, mum Susie, and the dogs. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:35
Grandma Julie lives round the corner, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
but you'll often find her at the Green family home. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
They're a tight-knit bunch. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
He's a little bully! DOG BARKS | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
DOGS GROWL Does anyone else want a cup of tea? | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
Wait! | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54 | |
Go on then. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
Now, you remember when I said Jackie was born a boy? | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
Well, she doesn't quite see it like that. It's complicated. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
-You used to be a lad? -I...I never used to be a lad. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
It's just like, if you met someone else who was, like, trans, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
and you said that to someone else who wasn't as nice as me, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
you might get a slap. So you know, be careful. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
-I apologise. -Yeah, should do, dickhead! | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
I've always been a girl. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
I had this little birth defect that needed to be fixed. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
Just like having a mole, which you don't like. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
I have a girl's brain, and I had a boy's bottom half, sort of thing. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:38
I was surprised to learn that Jackie had felt like this | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
for as long as she can remember. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
Kids always know who they are. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
It's like if you tried to dress my brother | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
when he was like three or four | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
in some girl's clothes he would have been mortified. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
He would have seriously kicked some ass about that, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
because it was just like... | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
You know. Part of you always knows. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
When I was four, I said to my mum, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
"God's made a mistake. I should have been a girl." | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
Obviously, any parent faced with their child saying that | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
thinks, I really want this to go away. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
I really don't want to have to deal with this. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
The first time I ever took her shopping | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
I took this little boy shopping, you know, with short hair | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
and wearing jeans and T-shirt, and we were in the girl aisle | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
and he's picking up dresses, | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
and putting them up against and swirling around. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
I just thought everybody in the shop is looking at me | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
and thinking, "Oh, what is that woman doing?" | 0:03:35 | 0:03:37
What was going through your head at this stage? | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
I just thought she'd grow out of it. I just thought she'd like girl stuff for a bit | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
and then she'd start liking boy stuff more. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
And it just never happened. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:48
I love that. That's cool. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
-She never let up, did she? -Oh, no! | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
It's not as if she ever went, "Oh, all right then!" She never let up. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
Jackie was so sure of her identity that she would eventually become | 0:04:01 | 0:04:06
the youngest person in the world to change their gender through surgery. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:11
She was just 16. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
It was a moment of transformation for Jackie in more ways than one. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
She lost weight, gained confidence, and set her sights on modelling, | 0:04:19 | 0:04:25
starting with a string of student fashion shows. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
After being spotted by Miss England scouts | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
she won an online public vote and a place in the regional heats. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
The first transsexual to make it into Miss England. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
She was asked to enter the beauty competition by modelling scouts | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
who had no idea of her history. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
And that was that Jackie was in fact born a boy, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
and at 16 became the UK's youngest transsexual. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
So why is Jackie entering Miss England? | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
The whole point of it is, obviously, yeah, | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
it's to further myself in my modelling career, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
but whenever I was younger all I'd see was the drastic trans people | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
who've left their kids and wives. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
It's quite daunting to see that that's how your life might turn out. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
I like the idea of being a role model. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
I feel big-headed whenever I say it, it sounds, like, weird. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
But, erm, yeah, | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
I think there definitely needs to be more role models. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
We'll be following Jackie all the way, as she attempts | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
to become the first ever transsexual Miss England. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
10,000 girls entered Miss England this year. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
The winner will take home a £30,000 prize package, | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
become an ambassador for the competition's charity | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
and represent England on the global stage at Miss World, | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
which will next be held in Mongolia. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
In the coming week, Jackie is competing in two separate qualifiers, | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
battling to win a place in the Miss England semi-final. And she seems confident. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:03
I'm pretty excited actually, I'm just like, come on, lets go do it! | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
Take it on! But, yeah, so that's pretty cool. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
-Have you ever done a pageant before? -No, never. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
Have you ever even been to one? | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
No. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:17 | |
Jackie knows she's a complete novice. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
To stand a chance, she's going to need some training. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
So today she's travelled to London to be transformed | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
into a potential beauty queen in a one-day course | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
run by Miss England 2008 Laura Coleman... | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
-I'm Laura. -Hi! | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
..along with pageant coach David Douglas and their team of experts. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
-Please take care of me. I'm very nervous! -Don't worry! | 0:06:41 | 0:06:45
You sit down next to me and I'll explain what's going to happen. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
Have you been in any heats before already? | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
Erm, I was in the photo heats round. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
Have you done any heats where you're walking against other girls? | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
-No. -It's OK. We're very successful at training people. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
We've had multiple winners, not only in Miss England. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
Last year at Miss Universe we had the top six at Miss Universe, | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
so our methods hopefully are working | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
and hopefully some of it will rub off on you. Let's go. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
It turns out that winning a beauty pageant isn't just about beauty. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
Organisers say they're also looking for someone with personality. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:20
So each competition starts with an interview. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
The interview round is usually a quarter of the marks of any pageant. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:28
So, if you're very good at it, and you blow them away, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
then you're in the game, you're scoring highly. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
The first bit is to tell them about yourself. Did you do anything interesting when you were young? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
Brothers, sisters? Did you have a horse when you were young? | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
A lot of girls had a pony or they were into something, you know, there was something. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
I am actually transgender, | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
-and I was diagnosed as transgender at five years old. -OK. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
So, erm, through that I would be going to see doctors | 0:07:52 | 0:07:56
and things like that, a lot of different, | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
like, psychotherapist appointments and things like that. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
Don't stall on that story and spend too long on it, | 0:08:02 | 0:08:04
because you are begging them to ask you a question. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
And then the minute they ask you a question, | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
you don't know what road it's gonna take. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:10
I mean, considering your circumstances, | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
what made you want to be in beauty pageant? | 0:08:13 | 0:08:14
Mainly to be able to raise awareness of people like me, | 0:08:14 | 0:08:19
and to sort of educate people. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
-Show that we're capable of doing what everyone else is able to. -Good. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
That's a question you'll be asked, | 0:08:25 | 0:08:26
so what I'm suggesting is, you say it. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
It's a dead story after that cos you're then in amongst other girls, competing. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
You are one of them and there is no difference whatsoever. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:37
I think what's very important is to dress for your body shape. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
There's lots of, like, different body shapes. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
Next up, Laura wants to help Jackie find the perfect pageant look. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
You can have a rectangle, an hour glass. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
So what kind of body shape do you think you are? | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
An hour glass. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
-I don't think I'm quite hour glass! -Yeah! Yeah definitely! | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
SHE LAUGHS | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
Yeah, you look amazing! Would you wear that, like? | 0:09:05 | 0:09:09
No, it's not really my style, it's too glittery. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
This is the first time I've seen the normally confident Jackie seem a little awkward. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:18
This one will look really nice with your hair and everything. Gorgeous. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
Looks so nice! | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
Maybe not gold. I don't know, I think it... | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
I think it really brings out your skin tone and your hair colour and everything, it really suits you. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:34
Apparently, winning a pageant isn't just about looking good, | 0:09:40 | 0:09:44
it's about looking good on the catwalk. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
MUSIC: "California Gurls" by Katy Perry | 0:09:47 | 0:09:53
And former Miss Universe Great Britain Tara Hoyos-Martinez | 0:09:53 | 0:09:57
seems to have the knack. | 0:09:57 | 0:09:58
She's the best walker going. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
-Is she? -Yeah. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:03
I only ever did one pageant, and I find the walking the most fun. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:13
Just walk for me how you would walk normally. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
Just like walking down the street. Yeah? | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
I'm no expert, but I'm not sure Jackie's getting into this. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
Yeah? That's good, all right then. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:36
You need to show them that you're meant to be there. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:39
You could do a back flip, lose your knickers down the middle of the stage, | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
but as long as you're confident. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:44
You're smiling, having a good time, and everyone will be smiling with you. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:48
It's really smiley. Yeah? | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
You all right, darling? You OK? | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
SHE SOBS | 0:11:10 | 0:11:14
-Are you all right, babe? -Yeah. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
Oh, darling! | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
Seeing... SHE SIGHS | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
Seeing you girls, it's just... I don't stand a chance. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
-Yes, you do! -No, I don't. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:30
You're amazing! You have everything going for you. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
Like you have everything, honestly, I absolutely swear to you now. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:37
You're doing amazing. You've just got to do it and enjoy yourself | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
and do it for you, not for other people. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:42
I'm sorry about this. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:44
You don't have to be sorry. I'll walk with you. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:49
Now you've made a big step in life, and you've gone through a massive journey. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:53
You've missed out lots of steps because probably the world hasn't allowed you to have those things. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
We go to pageants and we see little girls coming up to us | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
wanting autographs, wanting to ask us questions | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
about how do they become a pageant queen. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:05
It's every girl's little dream. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:06
And maybe, maybe, some of those pieces of life have been taken away from you. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:11
But it doesn't mean to say you can't have them now. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:13
Jackie's confidence definitely took a knock. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
But with support from Laura and David, she's back on the catwalk. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:22
Keep your shoulders back, there you go. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
Smile, have fun, yep. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
Remember, finish with a good pose. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
-Nice. -I don't have any problem with her being in this pageant, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
and I think she can contest equally, and I think she can win something. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
Left and right, smile at the audience, shoulders back. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
She's got something about her, she has a passion for it, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
and I think she realised today that if she applies herself, | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
she can compete at this level. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
I think she can stand tall against all these girls. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
That was good! | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
It's two days until Jackie competes | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
in her first qualifier for Miss England. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:08
She's at a photo shoot, trying out different looks. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:13
For ten years, Jackie's been wearing whatever she wants in public, | 0:13:13 | 0:13:17
but this wasn't always the case. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
Up to the age of eight, she was still wearing a boy's uniform to school. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
Mum Susie could tell it wasn't working. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
Towards sort of like the middle of primary school, | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
erm, she was becoming more and more unhappy. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
It confused the other kids, that she acted like a girl | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
and wanted to play with the girls. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
And she just started to tell everybody. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:42
I sent an email around the class saying, "I'm a girl trapped in a boy's body." | 0:13:43 | 0:13:48
They just sort of went, "Oh, that's why!" | 0:13:48 | 0:13:53
You know, "That's why he's so weird!" | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
Sorry - I hate saying "he", but I was back then, I guess. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
The head of the primary school said to me, | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
"Can you just tell her not to do that?" and I went, "I've tried!" | 0:14:02 | 0:14:06
Being forced to dress as a boy was taking its toll on young Jackie. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:12
She was disruptive in lessons, | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
she was very confrontational, she was very angry all the time. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
She would steal things, she'd destroy things. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
It was all sort of acting out this immense feeling | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
of being so totally wrong and unhappy with herself. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:29
I had to talk her out of wanting to cut her parts off, | 0:14:29 | 0:14:36
cos she didn't want... They weren't...they weren't her. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:40
It was a huge strain on the family. Something had to change. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:46
By the time she was about nine, I just said to the school, | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
"Look, trying to live as a boy in school is not doing her any good. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:55
"I'm going to let her grow her hair and I'm gonna let her start coming to school | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
"looking like she is on the inside." | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
It felt just amazing to be myself, | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
like instead of having all these people tell me I'm not a girl, | 0:15:05 | 0:15:09
and it's just like, "Yeah, I am. Fuck off! Go away!" | 0:15:09 | 0:15:13
Come down, come down. The dress is here! | 0:15:14 | 0:15:18
There's a delivery for Jackie. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
I have the dress! The dress! | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
Oh, my God! I want to put it on now! | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
It's Jackie's first ever pageant dress. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
It's so beautiful! | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
I think she's starting to get into the part. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
It's the day of the Nottingham heat for Miss England. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
A first for Jackie and a first for the beauty pageant. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:58
Change it from where you finish, and hold the pose for four. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:02
She's battling it out with 50 other girls for a handful of places in the Miss England semi-final. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:10
I am nervous, but optimistic. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:14
Not to sound rude but there's all different shapes and sizes. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
I mean catwalk, everyone's skinny bony and walking up and down like they're zombies. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:25
Here there's a bit more character introduced. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:29
I think it's gonna give me a good chance, especially in the interview stages. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
Cocky much(!) | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
But before the competition gets into full swing, | 0:16:41 | 0:16:45
Jackie is meeting David and Laura for some final tips. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
Hello! Oh my gosh. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:51
I'm dying of heat exhaustion, I've just been running up and down stairs. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
-You look really nice. -She looks lovely, doesn't she? | 0:16:54 | 0:16:58
So, simple things, never leave your back to the judges, OK? | 0:16:58 | 0:17:01
They'll score you from the back, and you don't want that. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
-Take all the attention you can get. -Would you like to see my dress? | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
-I'd love to. -I have a picture of it on my phone. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
Pretty nice, I think you'll do well today. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:17
-You need to work to feel like that when you're walking around. -Yeah. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:21
-Just to turn that... -Step out? | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
Yes. What will happen is the dress will naturally follow you around, | 0:17:23 | 0:17:27
almost like a dog. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
You're looking like a beauty queen today. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:32
-Thank you! -It's a big transformation from the other day. | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
You'll make me blush! | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
What's your game plan for tonight? | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
I wish I had one now. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:48
You've got to get in there. Talk to the judges. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:52
-Don't she, David? -Yes. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:55
It's the first round. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
A group interview. | 0:18:02 | 0:18:03
Judges rotate around the tables to chat to the girls. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
This is not a job interview. I just want to have a chat. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
It's Jackie's first chance to impress, | 0:18:10 | 0:18:14
and she's not shy about telling her story. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
Hello, I'm Jackie Green. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:18
I'm 18 years old, and I'll tell you some more if that's all right. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:22
I actually do a lot of charity work for children, | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
and families of children with gender variant issues. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
And the reason I'm part of that charity is because, | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
at five years old, I was diagnosed as transgender, | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
so since then they've been a massive supporting pillar to me and my family. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:39
I'm quite an ordinary girl trying to achieve some extraordinary things. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:43
-Like all of the other girls. -Yeah. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
Right, well, I think we should move on. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:48
At five years old I was diagnosed as transgender. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
-How did that affect your life? -It's gone towards making me who I am, | 0:18:51 | 0:18:54
and it's gone towards making me a stronger person and more confident. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:58
OK, that's fantastic. Good luck. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
-I'm transgender. -Are you? I would never have guessed! | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
-Oh, why, thank you! -Really? -Yeah! -Wow. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:06
It's hard to tell what the judges made of Jackie, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
but if points are awarded to girls with something interesting to say, | 0:19:12 | 0:19:16
Jackie must have won this round. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:17
Or maybe it's all down to the catwalk show. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:21
Can Jackie shine in front of the crowd? | 0:19:21 | 0:19:23
Now first of all I'd like to say, we have got 33 fantastic girls | 0:19:23 | 0:19:27
waiting backstage, so, ladies and gentlemen, first of all, | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
please welcome the girls in their club wear. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
MUSIC: "Countdown" by Beyonce | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
In the evening's big event, the girls will be judged on how they carry themselves | 0:19:57 | 0:20:02
in two different outfits - club wear and evening wear. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:06
Good evening, ladies and gentleman, my name is Grace-Elizabeth Weaver. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:13
Today I'm sponsored by Toolmatic, | 0:20:13 | 0:20:15
and it would mean the world to me if I won this evening, | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
just so I could prove that you can fulfil your dreams. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
I'd also like to show that beauty isn't separate from intelligence, | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
as I think that's a really important message. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
I want to win, because I want to be a role model for trans people | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
and to show that we're all beautiful, and deserve to achieve our dreams. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:34
APPLAUSE | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
MUSIC: "Part-Time Lover" by Stevie Wonder | 0:20:38 | 0:20:43
The show's over. The judges are considering their verdict. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:56
-Jackie's Miss England dream is in the balance. -We got through it, we got through it. | 0:20:56 | 0:21:01
-Did you enjoy it? -I did, I enjoyed it so much, so... | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
I was like, "Yeah, go on Jackie!" | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
-You did really well. -Thank you. -No, I'm really pleased, really pleased. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:10
You did really good, honestly. You did fantastically well. You should be proud of yourself. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:14
She looked fabulous, and just really poised and confident. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:17
You know, when she stood up there and said about raising awareness | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
for trans issues, I thought that was fabulous. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
Just really proud of her. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:25
Takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:27
It's the moment of truth. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:31
Will Jackie win acceptance from the pageant judges? | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
Now over to the Miss Modelzed finalists. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:37
Just five are going through to this next stage. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
The first girl making it into the top five... | 0:21:45 | 0:21:47
..is contestant number six, Jenny Williams. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE -Congratulations, Jenny. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:56
Contestant number 11, Louise Jowitt. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:02
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:22:02 | 0:22:05
Number seven, Jamie Lee Faulkner. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
-CHEERING AND APPLAUSE -Congratulations, well done. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:14
But the final girl that the judges have chosen to go through to the top five of Miss Modelzed tonight... | 0:22:15 | 0:22:20
..Is contestant number four, Jennifer McSween. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:26
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:22:26 | 0:22:32
And why would you like to win tonight? What would it mean to you to go forward into Miss England? | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
It would mean, like, so much to me to go into miss England. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:39
It would be an amazing experience. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:42
-How are you feeling? -Gutted, but, hey. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
I'm genuinely gutted. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:49
Being here has been amazing. I'm so sorry. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:55
I am so proud of you. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
It's only a beauty pageant, OK? It's only a beauty pageant. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
You've got the rest of your life to continue on to do whatever you want to do and I am so proud. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:23
You were fabulous and you look amazing. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
Look. OK? | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
This is a setback, you might not have done...got in to the final or semi-finals. | 0:23:29 | 0:23:35
Why would anybody laugh at you? You look fantastic. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
Nobody is going to look at you as anything other than | 0:23:41 | 0:23:43
just one fantastic amazingly strong young woman. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
-Please can you hug me? -Oh, babe. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:51
Come on. Let's go. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
Come on, you must be freezing your tits off out here. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:03
I thought we'd give Jackie and her mum a little space. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:12
But when we got back inside, Jackie was on stage. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:17
-What's going on? -She won the Miss Personality award. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
Basically, Jackie's won the personality vote, | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
which has been voted for by all the girls backstage. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
We asked them to vote for the girl that's made an impression. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
And to be honest I can't think of a better award to make her feel accepted, I suppose. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:35
-Are you going to keep going? -Yeah, as if this is going to stop me. I've been through much worse. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:40
It's just been a pleasure to meet you and to open our eyes | 0:24:40 | 0:24:43
and squash some, you know, ignorant views. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:46
-You're a real inspiration to a lot of people. -Thank you. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:50
Honestly. Really proud to meet you, pleasure to meet you. Honestly. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:55
I'm just gobsmacked, to be honest. I mean, I can't describe it | 0:24:55 | 0:24:59
because it's just like they have... they have voted for me. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:03
As in... Oh. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
I have friends and I've been accepted into, with... | 0:25:05 | 0:25:10
I'm just, like, you know, I'm one of the girls, and I should be. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:14
So it's just... | 0:25:14 | 0:25:16
SHE SIGHS | 0:25:16 | 0:25:19
SHE SOBS QUIETLY | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
Jackie might have won acceptance from the pageant girls, | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
but tonight's award DIDN'T come with a place | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
in the Miss England semi-final. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
But it's not all over. In three days, Jackie has another qualifier. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:42
Her last chance to make it through. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
The following evening I met up with Jackie, | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
who'd had some time to reflect. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
I was so sad. I really was like, "Oh, man." | 0:25:52 | 0:25:56
I thought I'd made enough of an effort and I thought, | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
come on, fourth at least! | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
Did it cross your mind that your past might have affected | 0:26:03 | 0:26:07
the judge's decision? | 0:26:07 | 0:26:10
I don't know, I don't think so. I hope not. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:13
Because if it did, then what a bunch of wankers. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:18
But I don't think it did. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:20
Jackie clearly has an incredibly strong sense of identity. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:26
And she's had to fight to express her true self for her entire life. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:31
That battle became particularly fierce at secondary school. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
Despite arriving as a girl named Jackie, | 0:26:34 | 0:26:36
in her small home town, she wasn't able to escape her past. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:41
-Secondary school was an absolute pigging nightmare. -Oh, yeah. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:47
She just was a girl and she just wanted to be treated like a girl, | 0:26:47 | 0:26:50
but it just made her a target | 0:26:50 | 0:26:51
for all this nastiness and bigotry and hatred. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:54
It was so obvious that I was a girl. | 0:26:54 | 0:26:57
I had long hair, I kind of guess I was pretty. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:00
So it was just like, why? I don't even look like a guy. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
If I had a beard and I had like... I talked like friggin' Barry White | 0:27:03 | 0:27:08
then I would get it, but it's just, like, why?! | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
Jackie was attacked a couple of times in the street by other kids. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:14
They circled her, about 20 of them in the playground, shouting out, | 0:27:14 | 0:27:17
"Oi, show us your dick, when are you having it chopped off?" | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
There was one boy in school who kept calling her "tranny". | 0:27:20 | 0:27:24
"Tranny, tranny, tranny, freak, tranny, man-beast," | 0:27:24 | 0:27:26
and it was every time he saw her. | 0:27:26 | 0:27:28
And the abuse wasn't confined to the school yard. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:33
When she was 14, and two adult guys attacked her. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:37
'They were, like, 40. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:40
'They came up behind me and they beat me up.' | 0:27:40 | 0:27:43
I was 14 and two 40-year-old men beat me up! | 0:27:45 | 0:27:49
What dickheads! Just saying. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
It was a difficult time and led Jackie to some extreme places. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:58
Something had happened at school. I think I got spat on. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:01
'I just said to myself, "Right, fuck it," and left. | 0:28:01 | 0:28:05
'I walked out of school. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:07
'I stole a packet of 16 paracetamol and took them in the toilet.' | 0:28:07 | 0:28:11
Obviously, I was feeling quite sick and ill. | 0:28:11 | 0:28:16
In the end we went in to hospital and checked in overnight. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:20
So, yeah... That was...that was hard. | 0:28:22 | 0:28:26
Jackie says she tried to kill herself half a dozen times | 0:28:26 | 0:28:30
before she was 14 years old. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:32
It was an anxious time for Susie. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35
-I thought I was going to lose her, I thought she was going to be dead. -Yeah. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:39
I thought she would kill herself, it was so awful. | 0:28:39 | 0:28:41
Every day was...a worry. | 0:28:41 | 0:28:46
I had nightmares about it, | 0:28:46 | 0:28:48
about her being subject to that sort of prejudice and hatred. | 0:28:48 | 0:28:51
So, yeah, I was terrified. | 0:28:51 | 0:28:53
'I hated every single part of myself, I didn't see any happy ending.' | 0:28:54 | 0:28:58
Like, I'm going to end up a dude. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:01
Or at least... Well, no, I didn't, I knew I WASN'T going to end up a dude. | 0:29:01 | 0:29:05
I would die before that would happen. | 0:29:05 | 0:29:07
Jackie had reached a critical point in her life. | 0:29:12 | 0:29:15
Puberty was around the corner, | 0:29:15 | 0:29:17
with all the irreversible male changes that come with it. | 0:29:17 | 0:29:19
She wanted surgery, but it's banned here until you're 18 | 0:29:19 | 0:29:24
and blockers - drugs that could have helped by delaying puberty - | 0:29:24 | 0:29:28
weren't available to anyone under 16. | 0:29:28 | 0:29:32
If I didn't get the blockers, I'd basically I'd get an Adam's apple, I'd get a deep voice. | 0:29:32 | 0:29:36
I'd have been about six-foot-four, I'd have got a beard | 0:29:36 | 0:29:39
and all that sort of thing. I kept saying to my mum, | 0:29:39 | 0:29:43
if I have to go through that, I'll kill myself. | 0:29:43 | 0:29:46
With her daughter's life in the balance, there was a breakthrough. | 0:29:46 | 0:29:50
Susie tracked down a pioneering Boston doctor named Norman Spack. | 0:29:50 | 0:29:54
He was Jackie's last chance. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:56
It's like a light going on for her to meet this doctor who just... | 0:29:56 | 0:30:00
He just totally and utterly treated her with respect, | 0:30:00 | 0:30:05
treated her as a girl. | 0:30:05 | 0:30:07
Said to her, you know, "This is clear to me who you are, | 0:30:07 | 0:30:09
"we'll just have to sort it out." | 0:30:09 | 0:30:11
And that made me feel like there was hope, | 0:30:11 | 0:30:13
that she would have a happy life, that she could be OK. | 0:30:13 | 0:30:16
Over the course of three years | 0:30:16 | 0:30:18
and half a dozen visits to the Boston Children's Hospital, | 0:30:18 | 0:30:21
Dr Spack provided the blocking hormones | 0:30:21 | 0:30:24
to stop the onset of a male puberty. He saved Jackie's life. | 0:30:24 | 0:30:29
Jackie hasn't seen Dr Spack for three years. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:32
Hi, Norman! | 0:30:32 | 0:30:34
How are you? | 0:30:34 | 0:30:35
I'm good, how are you? | 0:30:35 | 0:30:37
It's so good to see you. | 0:30:37 | 0:30:38
Jackie was the first trans person in the UK to receive this treatment, | 0:30:38 | 0:30:43
blazing a trail for other youngsters with a similar condition. | 0:30:43 | 0:30:47
I don't know how... to thank you enough. | 0:30:47 | 0:30:52
SHE SOBS | 0:30:54 | 0:30:55
Thank you. | 0:30:57 | 0:30:59
Thank YOU. | 0:30:59 | 0:31:00
You have been an inspiration to my work, | 0:31:00 | 0:31:04
which has made it possible for hundreds of young people | 0:31:04 | 0:31:11
to be treated like you. | 0:31:11 | 0:31:13
Don't! | 0:31:14 | 0:31:15
Gosh, you're going to mess up my make-up! | 0:31:18 | 0:31:23
Jackie has one last crack at making it through to the Miss England semi-final. | 0:31:28 | 0:31:33
The day before the event, I found her pretty psyched. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:35
I'm a person, I'm a girl, I'm a human being, | 0:31:35 | 0:31:38
I'm going for the Miss England competition cos I want to | 0:31:38 | 0:31:40
show people that that's exactly what trans people are. | 0:31:40 | 0:31:43
They're normal human beings, we're not freaks, | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
we're just trying to get on with our lives. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:50
There's not many people who are comfortable to say that, | 0:31:50 | 0:31:53
but...you know, I am. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:55
Watford on a Wednesday. Setting for the final showdown. | 0:32:09 | 0:32:13
Just a dozen girls facing off for the last two places in Miss England. | 0:32:13 | 0:32:19
It's now or never for Jackie, but she's playing it cool. | 0:32:19 | 0:32:22
'I can only do my best.' | 0:32:22 | 0:32:24
I might as well enjoy it while I'm here, no point being down about it, | 0:32:24 | 0:32:27
or worrying, cos if I look down or look like I'm upset or uncomfortable, | 0:32:27 | 0:32:31
I'm going to lose straight away. | 0:32:31 | 0:32:32
Actually there's some really gorgeous girls so I'm just, like, "Ah, shit!" | 0:32:32 | 0:32:37
-Hello. -Hello! -This is contestant number seven, Jackie Green. -Hi, Jackie. -Hello! | 0:32:44 | 0:32:48
I'm Jackie Green, I'm 18 years old | 0:32:48 | 0:32:51
and I'd like to tell you some more about myself, if that's all right? | 0:32:51 | 0:32:55
-We'd love to know more about you! -Saves us asking questions! | 0:32:55 | 0:32:58
One of the charities I work with is called Mermaids, | 0:32:58 | 0:33:01
and it's for gender variant children. I joined them when I was around five, | 0:33:01 | 0:33:05
me and my mum, because around that time I was diagnosed as transgender. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:09
So if you won the competition would you like to make this a bit more known to everyone? | 0:33:09 | 0:33:14
Yeah, definitely. I would love to be able to, sort of, educate people | 0:33:14 | 0:33:18
and show that trans people are very normal people trying to get on with our lives. | 0:33:18 | 0:33:21
Yep, there we go, nice. Yep. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:24
Let's change the legs up, maybe do something legs apart, | 0:33:24 | 0:33:27
a little bit more posey-posey with this one... That's it. | 0:33:27 | 0:33:30
Can I do my favourite one? | 0:33:30 | 0:33:34
-Whoo! -God, I thought you were going to fall then! -Amazing. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:37
-I was close! -Got it. | 0:33:37 | 0:33:40
Wow, I'm impressed with myself for catching that one as well! | 0:33:40 | 0:33:43
I feel like they liked me because I made them laugh, | 0:33:43 | 0:33:46
and sort of kept their attention. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:49
I wasn't boring, I don't think, you know. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:52
So hopefully, I did well. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:55
My dad's here, bless him. He's come to see me. | 0:33:59 | 0:34:02
'I think he finds it uncomfortable, | 0:34:03 | 0:34:05
'because he's your typical bloke's bloke and he's coming to pageants.' | 0:34:05 | 0:34:09
Oh, I guess it's not really his thing. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:12
I must admit her personality is such a strong point, | 0:34:17 | 0:34:19
and what she wants to do, what she wants to achieve. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:22
I'm interested now to see the catwalk, | 0:34:22 | 0:34:25
because being Miss England doesn't necessarily mean | 0:34:25 | 0:34:27
you've got to be a model, it's about personality, | 0:34:27 | 0:34:30
you're representing the UK. | 0:34:30 | 0:34:31
So you're an ambassador, that's one of the things we really look for. | 0:34:31 | 0:34:35
She has to be a complete package, just not a beauty queen. | 0:34:35 | 0:34:38
Contestant number seven is Jackie Green. | 0:34:38 | 0:34:42
APPLAUSE | 0:34:42 | 0:34:43
And she's from Leeds. | 0:34:43 | 0:34:44
Thank you, Jackie. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:49
It's crunch time on the catwalk. | 0:34:49 | 0:34:51
The prize - a place in the Miss England semi-final. | 0:34:51 | 0:34:55
That went OK, I think. Could've done better, | 0:34:55 | 0:34:57
but I think everyone thinks that, I think they always think that. | 0:34:57 | 0:35:01
We now have our results. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:02
Thank you very much for being so patient with us today. | 0:35:02 | 0:35:06
Our first runner-up, also going through to the semi-final | 0:35:06 | 0:35:10
is contestant... | 0:35:10 | 0:35:12
number seven, Jackie Green! | 0:35:12 | 0:35:14
Oh, my God! | 0:35:14 | 0:35:16
APPLAUSE | 0:35:16 | 0:35:17
SHE MUTTERS | 0:35:24 | 0:35:27
Jackie Green beauty queen, how does it feel? | 0:35:33 | 0:35:37
Well, THAT sounds really weird! But it feels fucking awesome. | 0:35:37 | 0:35:41
'I'm in it. Oh, my God.' | 0:35:41 | 0:35:44
Dude! I'd high-five you if you weren't busy! | 0:35:44 | 0:35:48
SLAP! Fuck, yes! | 0:35:48 | 0:35:50
SHE GIGGLES | 0:35:50 | 0:35:51
-Go on, go and see your dad. -I need to go and see my dad! | 0:35:51 | 0:35:55
Jackie's folks split up when she was seven, | 0:36:02 | 0:36:05
but the whole family are still close. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:08
I'm very proud and very happy for her. | 0:36:08 | 0:36:11
She's clearly over the moon, and so am I, so there you go. | 0:36:11 | 0:36:14
Keep it nice and happy, everyone. | 0:36:14 | 0:36:16
'There is absolutely no way to put in words | 0:36:16 | 0:36:19
'where Jackie was and where she is.' | 0:36:19 | 0:36:22
I was, like, "OK, breathe now!" | 0:36:22 | 0:36:24
She's had a torrid, tough, tough life. | 0:36:24 | 0:36:27
Erm, but she's getting through it and she's finding | 0:36:27 | 0:36:32
ways to be confident and happy and assertive and find her way in life. | 0:36:32 | 0:36:36
She's probably tougher than anyone I know, frankly. | 0:36:38 | 0:36:41
And good luck in the semi-finals. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:44
-Yeah, thank you. I know, right? -I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:48
I've done it, I'm in the semi-finals, and... | 0:36:48 | 0:36:51
SHE SIGHS IN RELIEF | 0:36:51 | 0:36:54
Fucking eh! | 0:36:54 | 0:36:55
NEWSREADER: Jackie who's from Leeds was the youngest person in the world | 0:36:59 | 0:37:03
to have a sex change at the age of 16. | 0:37:03 | 0:37:05
Yes, Jackie used to be Jack. | 0:37:05 | 0:37:06
The last time we met up with her she'd just been invited to compete | 0:37:06 | 0:37:10
in the Miss England contest and it went pretty well, didn't it? | 0:37:10 | 0:37:13
-Tell us all about it. -Yeah. | 0:37:13 | 0:37:14
It's a week since Jackie made it through to the semi-final. | 0:37:14 | 0:37:17
Every morning I wake up and go, "Oh! Semi-final soon." | 0:37:17 | 0:37:21
And the world's press have picked up on the story, from Yorkshire... | 0:37:21 | 0:37:25
to Brazil. | 0:37:25 | 0:37:27
Hola, Fantastico! I'm Jackie Green, I'm 18 years old, | 0:37:27 | 0:37:30
I'm a transgender Miss England contestant. | 0:37:30 | 0:37:33
I'm in the papers in Panama. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:39
Oh, my God, and Hong Kong! Oh, my God, India! | 0:37:39 | 0:37:43
I don't even know where Panama is. | 0:37:43 | 0:37:45
I feel like a terrible person but I don't know where Panama is. | 0:37:45 | 0:37:49
"Sex change teenager - now I can win Miss England." | 0:37:49 | 0:37:54
"Sex swap, sex change." I fucking hate those terms. | 0:37:54 | 0:37:57
-Do you? -Yeah, it's bullshit. -Why? | 0:37:57 | 0:37:59
I don't know, it's just... I think it's because it's always that | 0:37:59 | 0:38:02
those words are sensationalised, those are the things you hear. | 0:38:02 | 0:38:06
"Swap-op girl"! Oh, my God, swap-op girl! | 0:38:06 | 0:38:11
I have to admit, even though I fucking hate it, | 0:38:11 | 0:38:13
it does roll off the tongue pretty well. | 0:38:13 | 0:38:15
It's more than two years since Jackie | 0:38:18 | 0:38:20
had her gender reassignment surgery - | 0:38:20 | 0:38:23
or "swap-op" as the papers call it. | 0:38:23 | 0:38:25
She made history by becoming the youngest transsexual in the world | 0:38:25 | 0:38:28
on her 16th birthday. | 0:38:28 | 0:38:31
The seven-hour procedure is banned in England for people under 18, | 0:38:31 | 0:38:35
so the Greens flew to Thailand | 0:38:35 | 0:38:38
where at the time it could be done legally at 16. | 0:38:38 | 0:38:41
They booked her in for her 16th birthday. | 0:38:41 | 0:38:43
And I told her and she danced around the room for five minutes. | 0:38:43 | 0:38:46
It was like a victory dance, | 0:38:46 | 0:38:48
it was like, "Yay, yay, I'm getting a fanny!" | 0:38:48 | 0:38:51
SHE CHUCKLES | 0:38:51 | 0:38:52
I don't know the technical terms of what they did, and I really don't want to, it's gross. | 0:38:52 | 0:38:56
It's just, like, "Oh, no!" | 0:38:56 | 0:38:57
The majority of surgeons around the world | 0:38:57 | 0:39:00
do something called penile inversion where they basically use | 0:39:00 | 0:39:02
the skin from the penis to create the vagina. | 0:39:02 | 0:39:05
She hadn't developed through full puberty, | 0:39:05 | 0:39:07
so, to not put too fine a point on it, there wasn't much to work with! | 0:39:07 | 0:39:11
Sorry, Jackie, she'll hate that! | 0:39:11 | 0:39:13
SHE LAUGHS | 0:39:13 | 0:39:14
From the minute I woke up I felt different, | 0:39:17 | 0:39:20
and everything just seemed so much brighter. | 0:39:20 | 0:39:24
I was who I should be and no-one could tell me otherwise. | 0:39:24 | 0:39:28
She just went, "Oh, I'm so happy," and then burst into tears | 0:39:28 | 0:39:32
and she went, "I can't believe it, I've got a fanny." | 0:39:32 | 0:39:36
And just...we were both in tears cos it wasn't just what | 0:39:36 | 0:39:39
she was saying, it was just the look on her face. | 0:39:39 | 0:39:42
She just...she was just so happy. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:45
It was the start of my life, | 0:39:45 | 0:39:48
and from there, it's been pretty wicked. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:51
For a normal working mum, it was a huge financial strain. | 0:39:57 | 0:40:01
Worked out about between £28,000-£30,000 altogether. | 0:40:01 | 0:40:05
I put it on my mortgage, I had no other way of paying for it. | 0:40:05 | 0:40:08
Is she going to pay you back? | 0:40:08 | 0:40:10
Yeah, right(!) | 0:40:10 | 0:40:11
BOTH LAUGH | 0:40:11 | 0:40:13
It's the day before the Miss England semi-final | 0:40:19 | 0:40:23
and we're all in Leicester. | 0:40:23 | 0:40:24
Susie and a friend have driven 100 miles to support Jackie. | 0:40:24 | 0:40:28
Stressed is not the word, she's been going up the wall. | 0:40:28 | 0:40:33
I'm really worried about how she'll take it if she doesn't go through. | 0:40:33 | 0:40:36
She really, really wants it, | 0:40:36 | 0:40:38
but she's done fabulously well to get this far. | 0:40:38 | 0:40:41
Who would've thought it? | 0:40:41 | 0:40:43
10 years ago, I didn't even know she'd be alive, so... | 0:40:43 | 0:40:46
This is a new level of competition, | 0:40:50 | 0:40:52
by the far the biggest pageant Jackie's ever competed in. | 0:40:52 | 0:40:55
60 girls vying for just 12 places in the Miss England final. | 0:40:55 | 0:41:00
-Hello. -Hello, honey. -The semi is a little bit different. | 0:41:00 | 0:41:04
Girls are competing against each other | 0:41:04 | 0:41:06
in a series of sports competitions. | 0:41:06 | 0:41:09
And bizarrely they'll be modelling home-made eco-dresses. | 0:41:09 | 0:41:13
-Hello. -Hello, come in. -Hello. | 0:41:16 | 0:41:19
Right, we have wine and vodka and water for you. | 0:41:19 | 0:41:22
Thank you for the water! | 0:41:22 | 0:41:25
Half ten on the night before the competition. | 0:41:25 | 0:41:28
So what's the plan with the old dress, then? Balcony? | 0:41:28 | 0:41:31
The plan is don't you get too drunk... | 0:41:31 | 0:41:33
-I'm not getting too drunk! -..so you can't help me spray my dress. -Oh, OK. | 0:41:33 | 0:41:37
-Is this eco-dress still in here? -Yeah. | 0:41:37 | 0:41:40
Oh, Jackie! You should have hung it up! | 0:41:40 | 0:41:42
-Where am I meant to hang it up? -All the fingers are going to get stuck together. | 0:41:42 | 0:41:46
OK, so we need to lay this out now, and we need to unpick it. | 0:41:46 | 0:41:48
Look at that! | 0:41:48 | 0:41:50
-You can't walk down the catwalk in that! -No. | 0:41:52 | 0:41:55
Jackie's friend has hand-made an eco-dress out of rubber gloves | 0:41:55 | 0:41:59
for the event, but it hasn't travelled well. | 0:41:59 | 0:42:02
-Shit, Jackie. This shouldn't have been left bundled up. -Oh, Jackie. | 0:42:02 | 0:42:06
-Glove fingers are all sticking together. -Yeah. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:08
Have we got like anything we can peg that to? | 0:42:08 | 0:42:10
-How's that going to peg it on? -Don't start! -Don't start! | 0:42:10 | 0:42:13
We're trying to do you a favour! | 0:42:13 | 0:42:15
-Yeah. -She's only left it wrapped up | 0:42:15 | 0:42:17
in a bloody bundle for half the night. | 0:42:17 | 0:42:19
-See you in the morning, babe. -All right. | 0:42:19 | 0:42:23
-I'm sorry. -That's all right. -It looks great. -Night, honey. | 0:42:23 | 0:42:26
-Bye! -Night, bye. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:28
It's the day Jackie's been waiting for - the Miss England Semi-Final. | 0:42:33 | 0:42:38
-You nervous? -I wasn't particularly nervous yesterday. -Yeah. | 0:42:43 | 0:42:46
Now, I feel a little bit more nervous. | 0:42:46 | 0:42:52
-Yeah. -Just like, putting on make-up and getting ready. | 0:42:52 | 0:42:55
Big smile, there you go. | 0:42:57 | 0:42:58
It's 10am. Jackie's first chance to size up the other girls. | 0:43:00 | 0:43:06
I'm Jackie. | 0:43:06 | 0:43:08
They're the cream of the competition, | 0:43:09 | 0:43:11
and Jackie seems a little sensitive. | 0:43:11 | 0:43:14
Everyone's got cool names like Natalia. | 0:43:14 | 0:43:16
I don't know how to pronounce some of them. | 0:43:16 | 0:43:18
but it's like, mine's "Jackie". I feel boring. It's just, oh. | 0:43:18 | 0:43:21
-Didn't you choose your name? -Yeah, but still... | 0:43:21 | 0:43:25
An elegant lady is what I look for, to put it bluntly. | 0:43:27 | 0:43:32
She's got to be very beautiful to look at, | 0:43:32 | 0:43:35
but also she's got to be beautiful from within. | 0:43:35 | 0:43:37
If somebody comes in and says they want to work for world peace | 0:43:37 | 0:43:41
or are interested in fluffy animals | 0:43:41 | 0:43:43
they'll get zero points straight away. | 0:43:43 | 0:43:45
The day starts with a sports round, | 0:43:51 | 0:43:53
with the winner going straight through to the Miss England final. | 0:43:53 | 0:43:57
But it's not Jackie's forte and she's knocked out early. | 0:43:59 | 0:44:03
After getting their breath back, all 60 girls are being interviewed | 0:44:09 | 0:44:14
individually in their evening wear. | 0:44:14 | 0:44:16
Jackie normally has a lot to say, | 0:44:19 | 0:44:21
and her story sets her out from the crowd, | 0:44:21 | 0:44:24
but this time she's up against her most challenging panel yet. | 0:44:24 | 0:44:28
It's a nice town. | 0:44:28 | 0:44:30
Famous for which playwright? | 0:44:30 | 0:44:31
I don't know. | 0:44:31 | 0:44:33
Alan Ayckbourn, wasn't it? | 0:44:33 | 0:44:35

Because every time I do it, I raise about a hundred pounds. | 0:44:43 | 0:44:46
It's really worth it. | 0:44:46 | 0:44:48
Hello, have a seat. Everyone, this is Jackie. | 0:44:48 | 0:44:51
-Hello, Jackie, have a seat. -Hi, Jackie. | 0:44:51 | 0:44:54
Hi. My name's Jackie Green, I'm 18 years old, | 0:44:54 | 0:44:58
and I'd like to tell you a little about myself, if that's all right? | 0:44:58 | 0:45:02
-Yeah, go ahead. -I live in Leeds, but originally I'm from Maidstone. | 0:45:02 | 0:45:07
From there I moved with my family, my mum and my dad, | 0:45:07 | 0:45:12
and we moved to Croydon. | 0:45:12 | 0:45:13
Leeds - is it as awful as everyone says it is? | 0:45:13 | 0:45:16
JUDGE: Excuse me, I'm from Leeds! | 0:45:16 | 0:45:17
Leeds, is it as ABYSMAL as everyone says it is? | 0:45:17 | 0:45:20
No, I quite like Leeds, it's a nice city. | 0:45:20 | 0:45:22
I don't go out often which is probably a good thing, | 0:45:22 | 0:45:25
cos I can't drink much, I have a terrible tolerance for alcohol | 0:45:25 | 0:45:28
I'm, like, "Please, no!" | 0:45:28 | 0:45:30
-Did you raise funds for the Beauty With A Purpose charity? -I did. | 0:45:30 | 0:45:34
I raised maybe 200, or maybe 150, within that region, ballpark. | 0:45:34 | 0:45:39
-Are you happy with that total? -I am. | 0:45:39 | 0:45:41
I think I'm devastated I couldn't raise more, | 0:45:41 | 0:45:43
but I think at the end of the day every little helps. | 0:45:43 | 0:45:46
-Thank you very much, Jackie. -Thank you. -Thank you. | 0:45:46 | 0:45:49
I was surprised that for the first time in competition | 0:45:49 | 0:45:52
Jackie didn't talk about her extraordinary life story. | 0:45:52 | 0:45:56
She didn't even mention being trans. | 0:45:56 | 0:45:59
Pleasant enough but if asked a question, at least try and say something interesting | 0:45:59 | 0:46:03
-even if there's nothing interesting to say. -Make something up. | 0:46:03 | 0:46:06
Absolutely. | 0:46:06 | 0:46:07
APPLAUSE | 0:46:16 | 0:46:18

It's the final round - the home-made eco-dress. | 0:47:04 | 0:47:08
Jackie's very last chance to wow the judges. | 0:47:08 | 0:47:12
What did you put in the hands, Jackie? | 0:47:15 | 0:47:17
Yeah, just cotton wool. | 0:47:17 | 0:47:19
So simple and so soft. It's just, like, "Ooh, comfy!" | 0:47:19 | 0:47:23
Does it look all right? | 0:47:23 | 0:47:24
Yeah, it's fun, really effective. | 0:47:24 | 0:47:28
Contestant one is Dempsie Trevor-Wilson, Miss Leicester runner-up. | 0:47:28 | 0:47:32

-and make the world a greener place to live. -That's fantastic. | 0:47:44 | 0:47:48
-Tell us a bit about your outfit. -Well, my dress is made from | 0:47:48 | 0:47:53
a very simple white, tubular dress. | 0:47:53 | 0:47:55
Very eco. I like to think so. | 0:47:55 | 0:47:58
And you've got to be a bit cheeky. LAUGHTER | 0:47:58 | 0:48:01
You look fabulous! | 0:48:01 | 0:48:02
Take one more walk down our catwalk. | 0:48:02 | 0:48:04
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:48:04 | 0:48:06
The competition's over. Jackie's done all she can. | 0:48:08 | 0:48:11
But has she made the top 12? | 0:48:11 | 0:48:13
I interviewed her this afternoon and was very underwhelmed, | 0:48:15 | 0:48:18
wasn't impressed by her particularly this afternoon. | 0:48:18 | 0:48:21
However, when she came out this evening, it was a completely different story. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:24
I loved her outfit and there was a swagger there, there was confidence. | 0:48:24 | 0:48:28
Cheeky, which was definitely a good thing, I'd say, | 0:48:28 | 0:48:32
shows a bit of personality. | 0:48:32 | 0:48:34
I've heard about Jackie, I interviewed her today | 0:48:34 | 0:48:37
and I thought she was lovely, I really did. | 0:48:37 | 0:48:40
In some of the other rounds you gave a bit of a talk | 0:48:40 | 0:48:43
-about your back story, and none of that happened publicly today. -Oh. | 0:48:43 | 0:48:47
-Was that a conscious decision or was that just the way things went? -Yeah, it was. | 0:48:47 | 0:48:51
As much as I'm proud to be who I am, it's not important that everyone knows. | 0:48:51 | 0:48:56
Because it's not a big deal to me, | 0:48:56 | 0:48:58
and it shouldn't be to everyone else. Because I'm a girl. | 0:48:58 | 0:49:01
If I can fit in with everyone else | 0:49:01 | 0:49:03
then that's also a really big accomplishment for me, | 0:49:03 | 0:49:06
and it feels like one. | 0:49:06 | 0:49:07

Just six places away from qualifying. | 0:50:12 | 0:50:15
But for now, her Miss England dream is over. | 0:50:16 | 0:50:20
You did a really good job, the best that you could. | 0:50:26 | 0:50:29
As you say, some absolute stunning girls who haven't gone through, just like you. | 0:50:29 | 0:50:33
I'm really gutted, honestly, I could cry, but... | 0:50:33 | 0:50:37
-I just want to go home, I just really want to go home now. -Yeah. | 0:50:37 | 0:50:41
-See you later. -Yeah, I'll see you soon. -See you soon. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:50
It's four weeks since the semi-final | 0:51:11 | 0:51:13
and I've caught up with Jackie, who's got some news. | 0:51:13 | 0:51:17
I have decided that I'm going to go to Thailand | 0:51:17 | 0:51:22
and while I'm there I'm going to have breast surgery. | 0:51:22 | 0:51:25
A breast reduction, I assume? | 0:51:25 | 0:51:27
Yeah, yeah, cos they're so huge(!) My bazoomas. | 0:51:27 | 0:51:32
No, I'm going to have breast augmentation to make them bigger. | 0:51:32 | 0:51:37
I kept asking Jackie whether she saw this | 0:51:37 | 0:51:41
as the completion of her physical transformation into a woman. | 0:51:41 | 0:51:44
But she was clear that wasn't the case. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:47
No, I have boobs, I have natural boobs. | 0:51:47 | 0:51:50
Like, I've been on oestrogen for, like, three, four years. | 0:51:50 | 0:51:55
I've got like some natural growth | 0:51:55 | 0:51:58
but they're not as big as I would like them. | 0:51:58 | 0:52:00
I mean, I would like them bigger. Not crazy big, | 0:52:00 | 0:52:02
I'm not going like I've got Jordan tits or owt, but...you know. | 0:52:02 | 0:52:08

I've got to ask, do you feel self-conscious about your chest at the moment? | 0:52:22 | 0:52:27
I don't know, it's just like I've wanted them done for ages. | 0:52:27 | 0:52:32
But, again, it's not a necessity. I don't feel that I HAVE to... | 0:52:32 | 0:52:36
Yeah, I do! I feel that I have to, but that's because I want to, | 0:52:36 | 0:52:41
and I'm an impatient little bitch! | 0:52:41 | 0:52:44
After leaving Jackie with the nurses, | 0:52:58 | 0:53:00
Susie bravely waits it out by the pool. | 0:53:00 | 0:53:03
'Well, like, yeah, of course I'm nervous, it's surgery.' | 0:53:03 | 0:53:07
I'm worried she'll be disappointed, I'm worried about the pain that she's going to go through. | 0:53:07 | 0:53:13
Nobody wants to know that their kid's going under the knife, really. | 0:53:13 | 0:53:16
The next morning, procedure complete, | 0:53:24 | 0:53:26
Jackie is groggy from the anaesthetic. | 0:53:26 | 0:53:29
It's hard to tell what the result is | 0:53:29 | 0:53:32
because it's only, like, 24 hours after. | 0:53:32 | 0:53:35
The swelling will go down and stuff, so after that it'll be better, | 0:53:35 | 0:53:40
but, yeah, I'm happy. | 0:53:40 | 0:53:42
I might not seem it, but I am! | 0:53:42 | 0:53:44
What does it feel like? | 0:53:44 | 0:53:46
Er...like I've done a really long workout, | 0:53:46 | 0:53:51
and then I've got some fat man sat on my chest. | 0:53:51 | 0:53:54
-But at least it's over now. -Yeah, it'll be fine. -Yeah. | 0:53:54 | 0:53:58
'I've brought clothes with me that fit me before and now they don't. | 0:54:15 | 0:54:20
'It's quite hard to dress.' | 0:54:20 | 0:54:23
Surprisingly enough, you can't wear the same clothes | 0:54:23 | 0:54:26
when you've got boobs, as what you would when you don't have boobs. | 0:54:26 | 0:54:30
I didn't really think about that. | 0:54:30 | 0:54:32
'I was having a panic yesterday about it, I was thinking, "Oh, God, what have I done?"' | 0:54:32 | 0:54:37
Had a really stupid, sad moment | 0:54:37 | 0:54:40
cos it was just, like, "Why are you moaning? You have boobs!" | 0:54:40 | 0:54:44
Six weeks on from the Miss England semis, | 0:54:44 | 0:54:48
did Jackie regret not mentioning being trans | 0:54:48 | 0:54:51
at such a crucial stage in the competition? | 0:54:51 | 0:54:53
No. Being trans has nothing to do with it, really. | 0:54:53 | 0:54:57
It shouldn't make a different as to whether I was | 0:54:57 | 0:55:01
more or less likely to win, if you see what I mean, cos I'm a woman. | 0:55:01 | 0:55:05
That doesn't make me who I am, | 0:55:05 | 0:55:08
it just adds a little more...story. | 0:55:08 | 0:55:14
I can't help but admire Jackie for what she's been through, | 0:55:17 | 0:55:20
and what she represents. | 0:55:20 | 0:55:22
She's a teenage girl who's not afraid to stand up to - | 0:55:22 | 0:55:26
or even invite - prejudice and animosity by being honest | 0:55:26 | 0:55:30
and open about the journey that made her. | 0:55:30 | 0:55:33
She's been prepared to waive her anonymity, to stand up | 0:55:35 | 0:55:39
and show people with similar issues that there is light | 0:55:39 | 0:55:42
at the end of the tunnel, that there can be a happy end to their story. | 0:55:42 | 0:55:47
And whatever the circumstances of your youth, | 0:55:47 | 0:55:51
nothing need stop you from following your dreams. | 0:55:51 | 0:55:53
I think some of it is sad, | 0:55:53 | 0:55:55
but I think all of the shit that I've been through | 0:55:55 | 0:55:59
has gone towards making me the character that I am, | 0:55:59 | 0:56:01
to be able to look forward to things | 0:56:01 | 0:56:04
and I'm having a really good fucking life, all right? | 0:56:04 | 0:56:07
It's not sad, I'm not sad, so it's not a sad story. | 0:56:07 | 0:56:10
