South Wales has more gyms, tanning salons and beauty parlours | 0:00:04 | 0:00:09
per square mile than anywhere else in Britain. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
It's a recession-busting industry | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
grossing an estimated two billion a year... | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
If you're good-looking, you get a better life! | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
SHE LAUGHS | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
..and it's fuelled by the wants and desires of a generation. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:28
Hair, beauty, money, fitness, health - | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
it's all a part of living. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
I think it's part of our culture. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
For the Welsh under 30s, hymns and arias have been replaced | 0:00:37 | 0:00:41
by protein shakes and Botox. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
How you look, is who you are. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
Oh, my bum likes that. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
What all women want the moment is a big bum, little waist. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
Like I've always said to Matthew, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
it's better to be looked at than overlooked. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
It's as simple as that. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
But beauty doesn't come cheap. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
You're looking at around £6,000 or £7,000 just on bikinis. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
Don't tell anybody - I spent, like, two grand | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
in the last two in a half weeks. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
What?! On what? | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
So, in these tight economic times, what drives the muscled men... | 0:01:10 | 0:01:15
The tattooed girls... | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
Do you like it? | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
..and the image obsessed gym bunnies to push their bodies | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
and their bank balances to the brink... | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
HE GROANS | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
..leaving them all feeling young, Welsh and pretty skint? | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
Let's have a look. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
In imaged obsessed Wales, the average under 30-year-old | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
spends 70% of their disposable income on how they look. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
Clothes, beauty products, body enhancements - | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
all set the tills ringing. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
But in an age of arse aerobics, ricoshake and the 24-hour gym, | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
it's the ever-expanding Welsh workout industry | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
that's truly raking it in. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
With a market value estimated to be in excess of £600 million, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
the business of being beautifully buff equals big bucks. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
So, whether you're looking for Kim Kardashian glutes, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:22
man boobs, | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
or, like 24-year-old Caitlin preparing to compete | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
in the latest international image and beauty craze, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
the gym will be the place where you spend most of your time... | 0:02:29 | 0:02:33
..and money. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
I'm a perfectionist in everything I do. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
I'm very OCD in particular about what I like - | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
what I don't like, as well. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
When it comes to being able to dress up and doll myself up, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
I like to go the full hog and enjoy the way I look. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
I think, I work hard on my body, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
why shouldn't I be able to show it off and look the best that I can? | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
That's good. Hold it there. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
Looking at me. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
Brilliant. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
My name is Caitlin Silcox. I'm 24 years old. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
I'm from Llanelli | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
and I'm a full-time student studying sports nutrition. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
I'm also a fitness model. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
Currently, I'm in training | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
for the World Beauty Fitness and Fashion competition, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
which will be held later this month in the O2 Arena. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
But what exactly is a Beauty Fitness And Fashion competition? | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
Well, it's not about how fast you can run in your heels | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
and it's definitely not bodybuilding. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
With the traditional bodybuilder, as you look at it, | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
I suppose people say it's more of a masculine look. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
It has completely come away from that now. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
With the fitness competition, | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
typically, it is more with the overall package. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
They want the sexy side of things, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
but then they also want the pretty girl next door, | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
someone that people can relate to and look up to. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
You know, do they look good in a pair of hot pants and sports bra? | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
Girls want tiny waists - mini waists - big bum, nice toned legs - | 0:04:04 | 0:04:10
a bikini body - and it is more of a toned look, | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
rather than an overly developed physique. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
Is your average female going to look up to someone | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
who's petite but nicely toned | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
and say, "I want to look like them," | 0:04:22 | 0:04:23
rather than a woman who is overly developed | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
and starts to have manly features? | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
Hmm... | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
To the casual observer, beauty fitness modelling might come across | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
like the love child of Miss World and Mr Universe, | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
but in just ten years, it's grown from a minority sport | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
into a multi-million pound global brand. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
Live events entice hundreds of competitors, | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
crowds in their thousands, plus further tens of thousands of punters | 0:04:47 | 0:04:52
paying for the privilege of pay-per-view. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
The competitions - men as well as women - | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
are split into professional and amateur categories. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
And whilst the winners take home little more | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
than a couple of hundred quid and a plastic trophy, | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
away from the catwalk, successful professional competitors | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
command healthy modelling contracts and sponsorship deals. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
They also become social media stars, | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
attracting hundreds of thousands of online followers. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:21
It's a lifestyle that Caitlin, still an amateur, aspires to - | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
and, already, she herself has a gobsmacking | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
17,000 Instagram followers. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
Not a bad start for a cash-strapped, live at home uni student. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
But Caitlin is no overnight success. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
Just three years ago, far from being buff and looking good, | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
she was a nonstop party girl going through an identity crisis. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:44
I went out to Marbella at the age of 18 | 0:05:44 | 0:05:48
and I went to go work behind a bar - I was working in Linekers Bar. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
I did have a job working in a club as a podium dancer. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:55
I was working from nine o'clock of an evening | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
until 6, 7am in the morning. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
You could see I lived the typical party girl lifestyle. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
I was living off, usually, fast food | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
and then I was consuming copious amounts of alcohol | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
pretty much six to seven days a week. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
It is a gradual thing that you see your physique changing | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
and I just felt I was holding more weight, | 0:06:15 | 0:06:17
my skin was having break-outs, | 0:06:17 | 0:06:19
I had to cut my hair really short because it was breaking off - | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
it was just a general lack of health. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
It was me just being, I suppose, a bit ignorant | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
to what I should and shouldn't be doing. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
I don't regret anything I've done. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
Going out to Spain was a big learning curve | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
and it was moving away from home, being completely independent, | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
but it was realising, right, OK. You've had your fun now. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:40
You've done a couple of seasons of this, it's time to go back, | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
get your head down and work on what you want to do. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
I'm not going to be 18 forever. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
So, Caitlin said adios to her party lifestyle and her independence | 0:06:51 | 0:06:56
and returned to the family home in Llanelli, | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
starting a degree in sports nutrition, | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
and, as we shall see later, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:03
undertaking a physically, mentally - and for her parents, at least - | 0:07:03 | 0:07:07
financially punishing lifestyle, in order to pursue her dreams | 0:07:07 | 0:07:12
of becoming an internationally renowned beauty and fitness model. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
Whilst Caitlin's chosen path to looking good | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
may well be the latest exotic sideshow, | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
the bread and butter of the Welsh beauty business is the local salon. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:26
Offering everything from bobs to Botox, | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
there are over 2,000 independent hair and beauty parlours | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
across South Wales, generating an annual turnover | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
in excess of £150,000,000. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
Although, for 26-year-old Jade, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
whose family run salon is in Bryn Coch in the Neath Valley, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:46
the beauty business means more than just money. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
For Jade, it's beyond a way of life, it's a philosophy. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:54
Having your hair done is a massive deal. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
It's not the most important thing in life, in the universe, | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
but it's a good place to start. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:01
-How is this bit doing? -It's all right, yeah. -Yeah. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
Because if your hair is right, then you feel right | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
and your life is going to go completely how you planned it. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
SHE LAUGHS | 0:08:10 | 0:08:11
-Rian's been stressed. -Yes. -So, her hair's taken a toll. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
And the answer to stressed hair Chez Jade is... | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
hair extensions. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
Wigs are quite - they're old school. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
-Extensions have been on trend for a while now, haven't they? -Yeah. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
-Especially around here, isn't it? -Yes. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
The interesting thing about hair extensions and extra hair | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
is that it almost empowers people, | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
they slightly take on that personality - | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
they choose who they want to be. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
What's the real reason why you have extensions? | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
The real reason? | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
-It makes me feel sexy. -Yeah, it makes me feel sexy. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:53
Women are beautiful without the extra hair, | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
we don't need the extra hair, | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
but there's something about having that feminine, | 0:08:58 | 0:09:02
long, glossy, healthy hair, | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
and if you can get it in an hour | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
instead of taking ten years to grow it - why not? | 0:09:06 | 0:09:10
I just love hair extensions. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
However... | 0:09:13 | 0:09:14
There's a very dark side to hair extensions | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
and I've seen that, and I will be honest and I will admit it... | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
No, it's not just because they're made from real human hair, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
it's that they're also terrifyingly pricy. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
-How much are they for a pack of 50, they're about... -89. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
-..89 for a pack of 50. -Yeah. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:33
And say if we have 100, that's about £160. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
-And then there's... -And that's before the cost of putting them in. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
And you have to have that done, say, every... | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
Say, now you have 100 bonds, that's £180, 280, | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
and then you have to do have the maintenance kit, | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
-which is 50 quid. -Yeah. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:50
That's like 320. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:52
And then regular blow-dries to keep them | 0:09:52 | 0:09:54
and you need to keep a check on them. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
Don't ever add it up, because it'll make you sick | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
-if you look back at your bank account. -Yeah! | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
But there is a recession-bending solution. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
So, basically, Leanne, we have to wait until you get paid, | 0:10:03 | 0:10:07
so, for now, she's renting her extensions. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
That's right, for just £10 a night plus fitting and removal, | 0:10:10 | 0:10:14
thousands of Welsh girls are currently leasing their locks | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
from a hairdresser, | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
and young entrepreneur Jade has got eyes on extending the market. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:24
Do you know what I really want to do? | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
I want to do extensions on a boy. Do you like a lot of hair on men? | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29
Foreign men... | 0:10:29 | 0:10:31
-BOTH: -Yes! | 0:10:31 | 0:10:32
Spanish men, Italian men, looks amazing. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
And beards? | 0:10:35 | 0:10:37
-I just think some men... -Makes men more manly. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
They look more attractive with a beard. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
But it's scary, because they can be hiding a lot - | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
hiding a double chin, you know. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
-Didn't think of that. -Hiding anything, really! | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
But it's not... When you kiss somebody with a beard, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:54
it's not all that great, is it? | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
Well, I think a nice amount of hair is nice. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
But not too much. If it's a BEARD beard, no. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
What about, um, when, like, he gets down to business? | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
I just can't do it. Can you imagine... | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
-You know, like, with a beard... -I think stubble's nice. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
..in between your thighs! | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
It's scary! | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
Stubble is nice, stubble is nice, but, um, no, | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
I can't be doing with a long beard, man. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:22
-Neat beards. -What do you think started it off, though? | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
-The whole, you know, beard look. -It's got to be something, hasn't it? | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
Maybe Isis? | 0:11:28 | 0:11:30
I really love it. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
It's really nice. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:34
-A pleasure. -Thank you. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
Look at me, look at me! You love it! | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
Oww! | 0:11:40 | 0:11:41 | |
Last year on Young, Welsh and Pretty Skint, we met Marc and Corey, | 0:11:41 | 0:11:46
two twentysomething goodtime guys who live to look fit and party. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:51
What does he look like, is he handsome? | 0:11:51 | 0:11:53
They splashed out all their available cash | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
getting buff down the gym, loading up on supplements | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
and topping up on their exacting beauty regimes. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
Ohh! | 0:12:05 | 0:12:07 | |
So, what are they up to now? | 0:12:07 | 0:12:09
Well, on the surface, little has changed for Corey and Marc. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:13
Whilst both boys are holding down jobs in the security industry, | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
all their spare cash is still being flashed | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
on tanning beds and treatments. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
But having spent a fortune on looking good | 0:12:23 | 0:12:26
with no discernible net gains, are things suddenly about to change? | 0:12:26 | 0:12:30
The boys have been contacted by Mark Paul Jones, | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
Llanelli's number one premier talent manager. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
Agent Mark's talent agency is called The A Gent, | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
and he's met lots of famous people. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:45
And now, agent Mark has got a plan to keep the boys pretty | 0:12:47 | 0:12:52
but no longer skint. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
I used to do work as a topless butler, | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
and after I went on TV, I bumped into Mark. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01
One night, I was at my mate's bar, | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
and he was outside doing topless butlering. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
So, I approached him. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:08
And he was saying, you know, what have you been doing | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
since you've been on TV and everything? | 0:13:11 | 0:13:13
And said, you know, I haven't really been doing nothing. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
I said, look, I think we can, you know, do stuff together, | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
I think you've got something, I'm not sure exactly what yet. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:23
I was like, oh, wow, this guy's nuts, you know, | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
I can't take this guy seriously. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
But he gave me his card and he said, drop me an e-mail and whatever. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
He sent me an e-mail, we met up. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
He introduced Marc then and I thought, OK, | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
these work together good, but how can we make them better? | 0:13:36 | 0:13:41
So, that's where I'm at now, trying to mould them to get them | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
where they need to be, not where they are. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
And as a first step towards getting them to where they need to be, | 0:13:50 | 0:13:54
agent Mark has called the boys to a careers meeting. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:57
Mmm, right. What do you want to do in the next five years? | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
Where do you see yourself in five years' time? | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
I wouldn't mind doing some fitness modelling, maybe, or... | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
-Just modelling? -Well... -Modelling, or anything... | 0:14:08 | 0:14:10
We could be presenters. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:12
-I can see you being presenters, but... -Like Ant and Dec. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:14
Like Ant and Dec! | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
But you know it's hard work? It's not just fun. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:20
It's mind over matter, you have to focus. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:23
Like you say, Ant and Dec - how do you think they started? | 0:14:23 | 0:14:26
It's the same principle, you've got to start from somewhere. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:30
You've got chemistry, but you've got to, er, progress, learn... | 0:14:30 | 0:14:36
-Yeah, yeah. -..but you've got to listen and understand, that's all. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:40
My motto is, say now, you put a person in a dark room, | 0:14:40 | 0:14:45
all bad words, negative things in the room, | 0:14:45 | 0:14:48
it's all grey and dark, right? | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
-Mm. -Within half an hour, | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
that person's going to feel down and bad and wrong. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:57
Now, you've got another room, | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
with all colours and put a person in that room, | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
with all positive things in the room, right? | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
How are they going to feel after half an hour? | 0:15:05 | 0:15:08
-Which one would... -The light one. -Right. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:10
And is that because of the person, or because of their surroundings? | 0:15:10 | 0:15:14
-Surroundings. -Right, so, if I... | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
Words of wisdom. Many words of wisdom! | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
So, if I change the surroundings, will that change your mind? | 0:15:19 | 0:15:23
-Yeah, it will. -Give it a go, innit? Give it a go, try it. -Give it a go. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
-Are we cool with that? -Yeah, cool. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
And that's the idea I've got in my head - you've done your body, | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
you've done your fitness, now it's time to sort your mind out, | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
-do you know what I mean? -Yeah. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
Just trust me, if it fails, it fails, | 0:15:36 | 0:15:38
but I can't see it failing, | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
because I won't take no for an answer, and I think... | 0:15:40 | 0:15:43
-The dream team! -That's all right, innit? -Massive! | 0:15:43 | 0:15:47
-Do it! -Let's do it. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:48
'I think modelling, yeah, OK, they could do some modelling type stuff.' | 0:15:48 | 0:15:53
But I think the key element is presenting, | 0:15:53 | 0:15:56
whether it be backstage at events, could be on the red carpet, | 0:15:56 | 0:16:01
interviewing A-listers of the world, doesn't matter where it is, | 0:16:01 | 0:16:05
it could be New York, could be London, I've got good links | 0:16:05 | 0:16:09
with the Cannes Film Festival, the F1 in Monaco, | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
so, taking them to different places and introducing them | 0:16:12 | 0:16:17
to big businesses, celebrities, anything, really. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
As a first step to stardom, | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
agent Mark has arranged a photoshoot for the boys. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:32
They aim to put together a portfolio of pukka pics. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
The photoshoot today, we're going to use for branding, | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
big companies, casting directors, producers, directors, | 0:16:38 | 0:16:42
to pitch them forward for casting for film, TV, maybe radio, | 0:16:42 | 0:16:46
magazines, that type of thing. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:48
In order to capture the boys at their best, | 0:16:48 | 0:16:50
no expense has been spared, | 0:16:50 | 0:16:52
and Mark has brought in professional models, make-up artists, | 0:16:52 | 0:16:56
a dresser and a creative director. | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
Remember, when you're posing, you're advertising. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:01
So, it's a glamour-filled first for the boys, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
and they are pretty excited. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:06
How about doing it with this on my head | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
and pretend that I don't know it's on my head? | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
-Come on, got to be professional, yeah? -That's not professional! | 0:17:10 | 0:17:13
All right, all right. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:14
All these people here are supporting you, | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
they've come from all over the place to make your life a reality, | 0:17:16 | 0:17:21
-the change - about that coloured room and stuff? -I remember that. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:26
-So, all these people... -This is the coloured room! | 0:17:26 | 0:17:30
This is the start, this is the beginning. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:32
Are you ready for make-up, boys? | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
Oh, yeah. I'm ready, yeah. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
'I've never done a photoshoot before,' | 0:17:36 | 0:17:38
so, it's a nice new experience for me, really. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:41
And then just, like, smarten up his eyebrows a sec... | 0:17:41 | 0:17:43
-My eyebrows? -Yeah. -They're nice! -They're just a bit wonky. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
It's a different experience, something completely new. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:50
He needs foundation because he's got very red skin. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
Yes, sunburnt, that is. Burnt! | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
I was happy with my eyebrows, | 0:17:55 | 0:17:56
but the woman said they needed smartening up, | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
they weren't good enough, apparently, | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
so she's smartening them up. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:02
Can you take this bangle off as well, please? | 0:18:02 | 0:18:04
Well, it's not a bangle, it's... It was off a monk, it was. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:08
Up in Merthyr. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:09
I know it's off a monk, but it's not for this shot, it looks messy. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:13
It looks like there is a dirty elastic band round your wrist. | 0:18:13 | 0:18:16
You wouldn't see a monk getting his eyebrows done, would you? | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
-You don't see that, do you? -No, no, they're not allowed. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
We are in dodgy territory now, we might offend some monks and shit. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
Never, ever had this done before. | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
First time I've had make-up on my face, haven't I? | 0:18:27 | 0:18:29
This could be happening every day, | 0:18:29 | 0:18:31
so, you could be doing a shoot here today, | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
then you could be doing a shoot somewhere else, | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
and this is how you'd be treated. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
If you were going on a TV programme early in the morning, | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
you'd have to be there at, like, six, maybe five. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
And then he could be going live on TV at eight, | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
and this is how you'd be treated, yeah? | 0:18:47 | 0:18:49
-Got it? -Well, all celebrities and all stars wear make-up, don't they? | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
All men and that, don't they? | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
Oh, your lips are looking nice there, Mark. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
Really nice lips, yeah, lovely. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
THEY CHUCKLE | 0:19:01 | 0:19:03
Whilst the boys prepare for their photo op, some 30 miles away | 0:19:03 | 0:19:07
in a gym outside Cardiff, 24-year-old Caitlin, | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
the beauty and fitness model we met earlier, | 0:19:09 | 0:19:12
is already on her second workout of the day. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
I'm in the gym, 6am, for an hour, | 0:19:17 | 0:19:19
and then back to do a weight training session in the afternoon. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
And then you're looking at another hour session | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
of cardio in the evening. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:28
So, I'm in the gym three hours a day, six days a week, | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
sometimes seven. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
Caitlin's currently in training for the final | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
of the European Beauty, Fitness and Fashion Competition. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
Within the competition that I'm going in for, | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
it's called a fitness category, so, you want nice, rounded glutes, | 0:19:40 | 0:19:44
that's a big bum, and same with the legs, nice definition in the legs. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:48
I am actually very petite, so I've had to work on my legs, | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
you're looking at two or three years I've been hammering them. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
It's hard, it is hard, | 0:19:56 | 0:19:57
because you are fighting with the natural genetics. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
The current world champion is actually Brazilian, | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
so you've got the typical Brazilian look - | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
the big legs, big bum, very petite on the waist. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
That's the kind of desired look that we're going for. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:12
Caitlin's Brazilian regime is tough on her body | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
and her pockets are taking a hammering too. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
I've actually got three memberships running currently. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
I've got one which is based in Gorseinon, | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
one which is up here, which is this gym in Cardiff, | 0:20:23 | 0:20:26
and then I've got one in Llanelli as well. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:28
You're looking at each membership is about £35 a month. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:30
You do have the advantage of the student discount, | 0:20:30 | 0:20:33
even though it's not that much. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:34
You'd be looking at £5 off. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:36
I travel to London a lot as well | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
for the competitions and the preparation, | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
so you're looking at, every time I go up to London, | 0:20:40 | 0:20:42
it's £20 for a gym pass. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:43
I'm training up there every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
That's £60 alone, just for three days' worth of training, | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
and that's pretty much every weekend throughout 2015, | 0:20:48 | 0:20:52
so you can imagine how much it adds up. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
Well, taking in fuel and gym fees alone, there won't be much change | 0:20:56 | 0:21:00
from £10,000, and that's just the start of Caitlin's costs. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:04
I am a bit obsessive with my hair, my nails, my waxing, fake tans... | 0:21:04 | 0:21:09
You're looking at £300 or £400, | 0:21:09 | 0:21:11
-once, maybe... -CASH REGISTER RINGS | 0:21:11 | 0:21:13
..for things such as lip enhancements, Botox, | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
and that's probably once every 8 to 12 weeks. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
You're looking at about | 0:21:19 | 0:21:20
-£200 or £300 each time... -CASH REGISTER RINGS | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
..and that's based in South Wales. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:25
In London, you're looking at tripling, | 0:21:25 | 0:21:27
-if not quadrupling, those prices. -CASH REGISTER RINGS | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
I live in my gym clothes. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:32
Even things such as trainers - | 0:21:32 | 0:21:33
I think the last pair I bought was £140 for a pair of trainers, | 0:21:33 | 0:21:37
and you're going through them, you know, once every two months. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
CASH REGISTER RINGS | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42
I go through six meals a day. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:44
Fish - £5 a packet and I go through two a day. | 0:21:44 | 0:21:48
Chicken breast, I'm probably going through a packet a day. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
Food, in general, you're looking at about £400 a month, £500 a month. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
CASH REGISTER RINGS But single largest expense - | 0:21:55 | 0:21:59
Caitlin's bespoke performance costumes. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:02
I'll start with this purple one here. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:07
This, I wore for the WBFF European Competition. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:14
This one was around the £400 mark. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
This, I also bought on the same day, as well. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:21
This one was my theme-wear. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:22
It also comes with this as a headpiece. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:26
I think this was around £450. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:30
This one here, which is my favourite so far, | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
I wore this for the World Championships in Vegas. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:36
This one was, I think, £500. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:40
This one, the bottoms, they are quite revealing, | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
and the bikinis are only getting smaller. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:44
They used to be a lot bigger | 0:22:44 | 0:22:45
but, obviously, it's to show off more of the physique, | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
but it's also, then, where fitness meets fashion. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:51
This one, then, the headpiece and the cuffs and then the headdress - | 0:22:51 | 0:22:55
there, you're going to be looking at about £800 for that one. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
The final piece, then. | 0:22:58 | 0:23:00
This is to do with a theme-wear round. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:02
Erm, the theme I wanted to go for was actually Tinkerbell | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
and these are all individual gold leaves. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:08
This one, I think, was around the £2,000 mark. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:12
I'd say the value of all the bikinis there, | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
you're looking at around £6,000 or £7,000, | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
-just on the bikinis on the table. -CASH REGISTER RINGS | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
I do have the benefit of the fact that my parents support fully | 0:23:20 | 0:23:23
what I do and they are prepared to help in every way possible. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:27
I do think that they have their days where they wish I didn't... | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
I didn't pick such an expensive hobby. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
As the Bank of Mum and Dad, do I faint on camera | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
-or should we wait till I come off? -Up to you! | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
Dad Paul is an undertaker by trade, | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
but Caitlin's pricey hobby won't be driving him to an early grave. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:45
We do our best to support her and I think anything people do, | 0:23:45 | 0:23:49
these days, is expensive. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:51
I suppose I could be fairly lucky | 0:23:51 | 0:23:53
that she didn't go into horse-jumping | 0:23:53 | 0:23:55
or want to do Formula One racing. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:57
I'm lucky enough that my uni degree and my past qualifications | 0:23:57 | 0:24:02
have been sports-based, have been nutrition based | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
so, you know, I do have that opportunity | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
of going down that route, | 0:24:07 | 0:24:09
where I can actually make some money off the back of it. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
Some people are paying, you know, 10, 20, £30,000-plus a year, | 0:24:12 | 0:24:18
just for, at the end, to get a plastic trophy, | 0:24:18 | 0:24:20
and that's all it is. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
It is extreme but I wouldn't trade it. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
Let me have a look at it. Can you take a photograph for me, please? | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
Meanwhile, back at the photoshoot... | 0:24:35 | 0:24:37
Whatever you do, don't put your arm like that. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:39
With your elbow out like this, you look like you have a massive elbow. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:42
Wannabe "Ant and Decs" Marc and Corey | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
are being given a crash course in modelling by creative director Alia. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:49
OK, a good thing to do with your face... Don't smile like that. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:52
Just, right, your eyes give it away. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
If you look scared in your eyes, you'll look scared in this shot, | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
so imagine this camera is, like, a really hot girl that you fancy. | 0:24:57 | 0:25:01
You want to look at the camera like you want her. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:03
You want to make love to the camera. That's what it's for. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
-Make love to it. -Yeah, you want to... | 0:25:05 | 0:25:07
-I want to make love to this camera. -It's the most beautiful woman... | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
'I didn't expect it to be as much work as it was, to be honest.' | 0:25:10 | 0:25:12
Sit up a bit more, cos you look too slack. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
'When you look at a photo, you just think that's just' | 0:25:14 | 0:25:16
someone taking a photo of someone | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
but being in there for about half an hour, | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
and it's draining, and that was just a one-shot, you know? | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
'I was nervous, first of all.' | 0:25:24 | 0:25:26
That's why I didn't have a clue what to do. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
Look at the camera all sexily, | 0:25:28 | 0:25:29
like a beautiful woman that you want to sleep with or whatever. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
-Like, work her. -Yeah, yeah. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
'I was just listening to what they were saying and following them, | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
'and I tried my best. If...' | 0:25:37 | 0:25:38
I don't know if I done any good. Maybe I didn't. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:40
Stop rolling these arm bits up. It looks so bloody bad. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:44
It's like what they do in, like, the '80s, | 0:25:44 | 0:25:45
on the, like, with hillbilly rockers or something. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
'Modelling is... It is quite odd.' | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
All right, so, Marc... Down. Cool. Point here. Point at me. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
'It's not easy when you're there' | 0:25:53 | 0:25:54
and you feel all hot and the camera is on you. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:56
More angle in your finger. That's it. Cool. | 0:25:56 | 0:25:58
A bit of growl in your lip. | 0:25:58 | 0:25:59
Like "rrrr". | 0:25:59 | 0:26:01
-That's the one, that's the one, that's the one. -That's it. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
I think Corey and Marc, I mean, when they first came in, | 0:26:04 | 0:26:06
I didn't know who they were. I'd not met them before | 0:26:06 | 0:26:09
and, yeah, everyone was messing around a lot and they didn't listen. | 0:26:09 | 0:26:12
Focus. Don't lose the plot. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:13
One, two... | 0:26:13 | 0:26:15
Perfect. That's exactly how you should be. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
Exactly how you should be. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:20
CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS | 0:26:20 | 0:26:24
But I think now they've actually really listened | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
to what I've told them | 0:26:26 | 0:26:27
and appreciated, you know, that I'm not being horrible to them. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:31
I just want to see them improve themselves. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:33
-This is like a joke shot, now. This is comedy. -A little reflection. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
So we've done beauty, we've done commercial - | 0:26:36 | 0:26:38
-now we want a comedy shot. -Funny boys. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
'Cos I do believe that they can do very well. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:42
'They've both got great looks. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:44
'They're genuinely really lovely guys. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:46
'Both of them are very sweet, very caring guys.' | 0:26:46 | 0:26:48
-Will somebody be in the middle? -Turn around and we go like that. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:51
It's not easy but I think I could definitely do it again. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:53
I didn't find it "hard" hard. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:55
Be sexy. Yeah, that's it. Good. Good. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
'If the opportunity ever came up again, I'd definitely take it.' | 0:26:57 | 0:27:00
Then, maybe with a bit more experience | 0:27:00 | 0:27:01
I could possibly do it for a living or something. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:03
-MARK: -What I've seen with the boys today, | 0:27:03 | 0:27:06
I see a lot of difference in them already. They're listening. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
-Give us a little "ah-hah". -Ah-hah. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:10
-No, not you. -SHE LAUGHS | 0:27:10 | 0:27:12
Obviously, there's a long road ahead, but I think I, you know, | 0:27:12 | 0:27:15
I believe in them. I think they've got a good possibility to go far. | 0:27:15 | 0:27:20
That's all they need - is people to trust in them | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
and see them the way that I see them. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:25
They have an inside that can come out | 0:27:25 | 0:27:28
which maybe they haven't had the opportunity to show yet. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:31
'It's like a flower, I suppose - they're just about to blossom,' | 0:27:31 | 0:27:34
and it's just nurturing that plant, watering it, | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
and I think everything else should fit into place. | 0:27:37 | 0:27:40
So I'm... Happy days. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:43
Mental. | 0:27:43 | 0:27:44
CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS | 0:27:44 | 0:27:48
-Oi! Oi! -Wahey! -Oi! Oi! | 0:27:48 | 0:27:49
Next time on Young, Welsh And Pretty Skint... | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
Her name, my mouth. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
It works, yeah. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:56
..can two young entrepreneurs make their dreams come true... | 0:27:56 | 0:27:59
Ta-da! | 0:27:59 | 0:28:00
..to open the UK's largest 24-hour gym... | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
They say size matters. | 0:28:03 | 0:28:05
..then fill it with the world's biggest ass class? | 0:28:05 | 0:28:09
Caitlin gets kitted out for the European finals... | 0:28:11 | 0:28:14
It works really well with the bikini, doesn't it? | 0:28:14 | 0:28:16
-Yeah, it does. -Mad Max. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:18
..and Marc and Corey are put through their paces at presenter school. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:24
-Tell yourself you can do this advert. -I can do this advert. | 0:28:24 | 0:28:27
-You can be a celebrity. -I can be a celebrity. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:29
-You can be whoever you want to be! -I can be whoever I want to be! -Good! | 0:28:29 | 0:28:33 |
