We are a nation of drivers - 45 million of us have got a licence. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:08
With that many on the roads, | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
it's no surprise we all know at least one terrible driver. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
Whether it is madcap manoeuvres... | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
Oh, Stephanie! | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
-Calamitous concentration... -Or just plain recklessness... | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
Sometimes the difference between a careless error | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
and a crash is just a case of bad timing or luck. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
We are going to take on drivers whose bad habits put them | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
and anyone else on the road in danger. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
And show you how you could be safer behind the wheel. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:39
In So You Think You Can Drive we will tackle two drivers... | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
Watch out. BLEEP! | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
..whose families think they are a very real risk to themselves | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
-and others. -You're doing 70, 80 on a 40 mile an hour road. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
He may hurt himself but he may hurt somebody more seriously. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:56
She is, you know, an accident waiting to happen. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
We reveal what happens when things really do go wrong on the roads | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
with access to the Serious Collision Investigation Unit. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
Got a possible serious RTC come in now. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
And though we know it's a bad idea to drive on the phone, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
-we expose just how dangerous phones in the car can be. -It's lethal. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:17
-It's way too dangerous. -So, do you think you can drive? | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
Most of us think we are good drivers but would our passengers agree? | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
When we offered to help the drivers who worry you, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
you suggested people of all ages and walks of life. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
But there was one group of drivers who popped up again and again. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
Newly qualified drivers are a high risk group on the roads. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:47
One in five will have an accident within six months of passing their test. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
It's not surprising many of you suggested guys in their teens | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
or early 20s. Families like the Gibsons. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
Liam Gibson is a 21-year-old electrician who needs to drive for his job. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:04
But is bad attitude behind the wheel is driving mum, Janet, to despair. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
When Liam is driving he thinks he owns the road | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
and that others are just in his way. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
He gets quite aggressive, tailgates other people. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
The faster he goes, the better. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
It's quite scary. You're doing 70, 80 on a 40 mile an hour road. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:23
It's fine. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
Liam is a really lovely lad. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
He's very helpful, caring and because I've now got | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
multiple sclerosis he is doing more driving for me. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
I've now got an insight in how he does really drive. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
You are either going fast or braking very sharply. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
Or you're swerving around the corner so you get thrown around a bit. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
You are going fast around these bends. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
And it's not just his family that his recklessness affects. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
He cut somebody up and they chased him | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
and the only way he could get away from this person was going | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
through a red light and managed to lose them. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
And a bout of road rage in his work van led to another run-in - | 0:02:53 | 0:02:57
this time with his boss. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
Liam got a verbal warning and he was made to contact the driver | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
and apologise. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
Liam hasn't had a serious road accident yet but sometime or other | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
he will if he carries on and you can tell him | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
but he doesn't want to listen. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
It's nine o'clock on a Monday morning. Guess where I am? | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
In a chicken farm! It's where Liam's first job of the week is. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
-His mum is waiting in the shadows. Morning, Janet. -Morning, Dom. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
He will be here any minute. We are going to need to get in there. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
Liam thinks he's at the chicken farm to look at the electrics. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
Let's hope this bright spark hasn't twigged his mum has asked for our help. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
Here he comes. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:37
He's driving sensibly at this point. Good lad. Are you ready, Janet? | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
Let's go. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
Dominic Littlewood from So You Think You Can Drive? | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
-Are you a bit surprised? -Yeah, I've been set up. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
-Why are we here? -So I think I can drive. -Yeah. I'll tell you why. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
Your driving has been scaring the bejeebies out of your mum. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
She thinks your driving needs a bit of intervention and improving. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
He does admit he's got a problem with speed. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
-Why else have you got a problem? -My mum, at the moment! | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
-Yeah, you are in trouble there, Janet. Are you ready? -Just a bit! | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
We're going back to your house to pick your car up. Come on. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
We are back at their house | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
and I want to know why Liam won't listen to his mum and dad. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
-You need to be driving your mum around more, don't you? -Yes. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
-Because she's got a medical condition. -That's it. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
-Why haven't you changed and made her happy? -Because I'm still young. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
Being young, my reaction times are quite quick. So... | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
Nine times out of ten I can probably stop. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
Like loads of lads his age, Liam thinks he's king of the road | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
and that's what we've got to fix. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49
Right, come round, jump in the car. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
I want to talk to you about some modifications we've done. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
As soon as Liam left for work this morning, we took | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
control of his pride and joy so that we can see his driving for ourselves. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
And while Liam gets changed, there's another surprise. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
Right, I'm going to be tailing Liam and sitting next to me | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
is Sandra, one of the UK's top driving instructors | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
and she's spent years retraining offending drivers. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
From what she has heard about Liam's driving, | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
she's not too happy, are you, Sandra? | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
Not really. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:23
We've given Janet a specific route to follow. Remember, | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
Liam has no idea Sandra is watching his every move. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
Way off. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
-JANET: -It's only 30 down here. -Yeah, there's nobody about. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
And it's not long before he shows his true colours. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
-Was there any need to overtake? -Yeah. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
There's two cars in between us all ready. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
You're now doing 45. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
-SANDRA: -We're in a 40. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
He's got big yellow signs to tell us we are coming up to a school. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
-JANET: -Is that the school car park there? -Yeah. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
-He has just driven past that school at 50. -It's like he's rally driving. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
In fact, Liam is going so fast that it's virtually impossible for us | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
to tail him at all. We've lost him. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
He's gone. And we lost him again. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:11
Where is he? I can't believe we've lost him again. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
-Right, we have lost him again. -Hello? OK, bye. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
You need to find somewhere to pull over. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
-I can see why his mum is worried. -Yeah, so can I. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
I don't think I was going that fast, was I? | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
I'm staggered he hasn't, as yet, had a serious crash. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
We spent two hours trying to follow Liam but barely saw him for dust. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:36
It's time to stop this speeder in his tracks. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
It's good to see you both again. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
Liam, I lost you more times than I could remember. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
Anyhow, I want to introduce you to Sandra McDonald-Ames, who was | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
sitting alongside me in the car. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
Sandra is one of the UK's top driving instructors | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
and she specialises in retraining offending drivers. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
I asked Sandra to come along today to critique your driving. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
-Over to you, Sandra. -I am totally unimpressed with your driving. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:07
You show a staggering disregard, not only for your safety, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
but for everybody else on the road. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
We saw you drive at excessive speeds past a school, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
nearly 50mph at school time when the children are coming out. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:19
You take unnecessary risks on bends in rural areas. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
You don't know what's going to be around the corner. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
If you were taking your driving test today, you would have failed within minutes. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:29
-What do you think of that? -Hands up in the air. Bang to rights. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
-You have no points on your licence, you've never been in an accident. -No. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
-You are oozing confidence, you feel like king of the road. -Yes. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
But you've gotten into bad habits. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
Sandra is going to try and sort those out for you. Are you up for that? | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
-Yes. -While Liam heads home, Sandra has a plan to show him | 0:07:45 | 0:07:49
how his bad attitude could result in serious consequences. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
Where do we go from here? | 0:07:53 | 0:07:55
To really challenge his attitude we need him | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
to face up to the consequences and we can't do that on the road. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
-You're talking about a test track? -I am. -Ooh, I like this bit! | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
It's not just young | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
and inexperienced drivers who cause accidents. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
There are loads of people who have had a licence for years | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
who are still a menace on the roads. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
Meet Jodie Barchha Lang - | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
-a woman with 15 years' experience behind the wheel. -Ooh, yes. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:25
Let's stop because there's a roundabout. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
And her long-suffering husband, | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
Phil, who is sure she's on a one-way street to disaster. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
Watch out. BLEEP! | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
Going in the car with Jodie is a white knuckle ride. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
You are supposed to be this side of the road. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
She tends to veer over the centre lines in the road, | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
she uses the mirror for anything but looking at traffic or things that are behind her. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49
-Lack of indication. -And that's not all. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
Add a dollop of self-confidence... | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
I want to go in there so you will just have to wait. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
..and a pinch of lane straddling, and you've got a lethal mix that | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
could turn a funny misdemeanour into a real-life nightmare. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
-Stop! -I am stopping! | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
The last time in the car with Jodie she nearly killed | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
a man on a motorbike and that was it. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
I told her I would never be getting in a car with her again. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
-CAR BEEPS -OK, OK. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
We used to joke about it but not any more. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
Something drastic has got to change before one of these minor | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
incidents becomes something more major. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
Jodie needs help before it's too late and that's where we come in. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:29
Jodie knows her family have told us her driving is bad. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
What she doesn't know is that I am here to confront her right now | 0:09:33 | 0:09:38
and I brought with me a little bit of evidence. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
The casualties of Jodie's incidents so far include... | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
Not to mention the side of a family friend's parked Jaguar. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:54
Here she comes. Hi, Jodie! | 0:09:54 | 0:09:58
-It's Cherry from So You Think You Can Drive? How are you? -Hello! -Hi. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:04
-Are you all right? -Yeah. -Do you want to step out of the vehicle, please? | 0:10:04 | 0:10:08
So, Jodie, the evidence suggests to me that you might need our help. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:17
These represent the trail of destruction that you have | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
apparently left behind. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
-Tell me what's going on with the wing mirror situation. -I don't know. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:30
I'm sure they automatically extend out into the road. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
-Do they sense you're coming and become bigger? -They do. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:38
What's going on with the wheel trims? | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
Phil's got two left because I took... | 0:10:40 | 0:10:44
Cracked and scraped two on a roundabout going too close. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
-How did he feel about that? -He wasn't happy. -Not happy. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
No, then he gave me a lecture about what a bad driver I am | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
but I don't think I am. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
That leads me nicely on to Phil. Please join the party. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
So, Phil believes it's time for an intervention. Is that fair? | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
I don't think so. I don't think I'm that much of a bad driver. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:09
I know now you've put it like this it looks bad. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
-The evidence speaks volumes. -It certainly does. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
Jodie needs a serious reality check so I'm borrowing her car | 0:11:16 | 0:11:20
so that we can get to the root of the problem. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
Ta-da! After a hi tech make over, I'm back at Jodie's house. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:29
So, if you'd like to step inside... There we go. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:34
-You will see that there are two cameras. -One there. -Absolutely. -Oh! | 0:11:36 | 0:11:41
TOOTS HORN | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
We have armed Phil with a map that will take Jodie through busy areas | 0:11:43 | 0:11:47
and help us identify the habits that could cause a nasty incident. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
-You look a bit nervous, Phil, are you nervous? -Always. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
-Ha-ha! -I'll see you very soon. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
-Right, forwards. -Bye! | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
-TOOTS HORN -Put your door in. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
While Jodie heads off in her newly souped-up car, | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
I've got a surprise in mine. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
So I can keep a close eye on what's going on, I'm going | 0:12:12 | 0:12:14
to be trailing her. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:17
And next to me is my secret weapon. Ready? Let's go. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:21
Jodie has no idea that Sandra is watching her. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
-TOOTS HORN -Don't overreact. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
And she's soon displaying her unique style of driving. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:31
-I have no idea where she is going at the moment. -Wow! | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
There's nothing coming. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
But lack of indication is the tip of the iceberg. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
She's the queen of road hoggers. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
Cars are having to move out of her way because of where she is. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
See this red area in front of those lights, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
do you know what that is? | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
-It's got a bike on it. -Yeah. And you're a car. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
-And a car that has mirrors, Jodie. -She's reversing. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
Did you know how close that car was to you when you went backwards? | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
-No. -Have you got visibility out the back? | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
Why do I need to see out of the back when I'm going forwards? | 0:13:03 | 0:13:07
-Oh, Phil, you may deserve a medal after this. -Stay over here. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
I'm trying to see what's going on. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
From what I've seen, I think Jodie's driving is potentially very, very dangerous. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
And Sandra hasn't seen her basic control yet. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:20
She's going to do a hill start. She has just rolled back. No signal. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:25
-She is off. -Stop! -I am stopping. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:29
She applies the brakes very, very late. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
And in busy city traffic, when Jodie gets stressed... | 0:13:31 | 0:13:34
-I want you to get out of this car. -OK, pull over on the left. I'll get out. There's your map. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:39
..all her problems come together to make her a real risk on the road. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
-That was so dangerous. -What else was I supposed to do? | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
No wonder Phil is worried about her. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
There are so many stupid idiots on the road. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:54
-Why are you holding the seat? -Phil looks like a petrified passenger. | 0:13:54 | 0:13:59
Jodie might not have caused a crash yet | 0:13:59 | 0:14:02
but that's just down to good luck. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
Now it's time for her to face Sandra. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
Wow, Jodie we asked you to show us your driving | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10
and you certainly gave us something to watch. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:12
It was nail-biting at times, I'll be honest. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:16
I would like to introduce you to Sandra McDonald-Ames - | 0:14:16 | 0:14:20
one of the country's most qualified driving instructors | 0:14:20 | 0:14:24
And she has been critiquing your driving all day. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:28
Jodie, if this had been your driving test, | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
you would have failed within the first 10 minutes. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
You seemed to have a lack of awareness and anticipation | 0:14:34 | 0:14:38
about what the other road users are doing around you. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
You are consistently driving up the centre of the road. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
What we saw is when you got into busy traffic, | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
more faults were starting to be generated. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
I have got real concerns about your driving. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
-Do you want to get better, Jodie? -Yeah, I do. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
Well, Sandra knows what you need to work on, | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
and you've got a lot of work to do, | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
so go and get a really good rest | 0:15:01 | 0:15:05
-and we'll see you tomorrow. -I'm going to need it! | 0:15:05 | 0:15:08
After having my licence for 15 years, | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
after what I've heard today, it is a little bit soul-destroying, | 0:15:12 | 0:15:16
but there still is the possibility that, since I've met Phil, | 0:15:16 | 0:15:21
it's got worse, because the job that I'm in makes me drive bad. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:25
Coming up, Phil's in the firing line again, with Jodie's driving. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
There's a bump in the bloody road, it's not my fault! | 0:15:32 | 0:15:37
Many of us are guilty when it comes to watching our speed. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
But, in the blink of an eye, | 0:15:44 | 0:15:45
high speed can turn into a serious incident. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
Nearly a quarter of fatal road accidents involve a driver | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
who was using excessive speed. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
Today, I have joined Durham Police Special Operations Unit | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
as they target speeding drivers breaking the 70mph limit | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
in a notorious accident blackspot on the A66. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
So he's not even slowed down. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07
Either that or he doesn't realise we're the police | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
and we're now behind him at 91mph. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:11
Right, the penny's dropped. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:12
Were you aware that it's a 70mph speed limit? | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
-I am, yes. -Yes, you are. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
-Why were you speeding? -I generally drive to what I think is safe. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
I have three kids in the car and my wife, so I wouldn't drive if I thought it was dangerous. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
But the police know that however confident you are, | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
speeding puts you and others in danger. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:30
If he's got to stop quickly | 0:16:30 | 0:16:31
then I would suspect he would change his mind and think | 0:16:31 | 0:16:34
that it was quite dangerous, and he wished he was going a bit slower. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:38
When accidents happen, the police see first-hand | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
the devastating impact of high speed. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
And where there is serious injury or fatality it's up to officers | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
to establish what caused the crash. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:52
These specialist police officers use state of the art technology | 0:16:52 | 0:16:56
and the very latest in vehicle forensics to try and establish | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
whether there's a criminal case to answer. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:01
And, to the victims' families, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:03
these are the expert witnesses that they'll see in court. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
Today, we've been given unprecedented access | 0:17:06 | 0:17:09
to the case files of East Midlands SCIU. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:11
Ambulance, what's the full address of the emergency? | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
We're on the A60, just outside of Church Warsop, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
there's two cars crashed, they're totally smashed up. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
Just the one person injured? | 0:17:23 | 0:17:25
In this car, but there's another car, there's two in that one. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
Does everyone appear to be completely awake? | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
No, he's not awake at all. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:32
When we get these types of call-outs, | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
We know it's either going to be fatal or potentially fatal. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:38
It's going to be as bad as it gets. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:39
The scene that PC Gascoigne encountered on 15th August, 2012, | 0:17:40 | 0:17:45
was one of devastation. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
The driver of a silver Ford Fiesta, | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
21-year-old Joseph Weston, | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
appeared to have lost control of his car on a bend. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
He swerved into oncoming traffic - | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
colliding head-on with a black Citroen C2. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
When the Fiesta came to a halt, | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
its driver and the passenger both had broken bones | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
But the driver of the second car, | 0:18:04 | 0:18:06
24-year-old Luke Winter, was fatally injured. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:10
You don't see somebody | 0:18:10 | 0:18:12
at seven o'clock at night and then, two hours later, | 0:18:12 | 0:18:18
you're identifying their body. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:19
Life before Luke's crash, we were pretty sorted, really. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:28
Just very happy. We'd got two great kids. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
And then, of course, 15th August arrived and, well... | 0:18:32 | 0:18:37
..our lives changed. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
At the time of Luke's death, I was actually pregnant. Nearly 17 weeks. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:53
BABY GIGGLES | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
It's heartbreaking to think that he'll never meet his child, | 0:18:56 | 0:19:00
and he'd have been a fantastic dad. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
He'd have been a fabulous dad. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:04
When you arrive at a crash scene like that, how do you cope with that? | 0:19:07 | 0:19:11
You have to detach yourself from the emotion of the collision, | 0:19:11 | 0:19:15
and the personalities involved, | 0:19:15 | 0:19:17
and just deal with it as a crime scene. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:20
Basically, deal with it in a clinical way. | 0:19:20 | 0:19:22
And what was obvious to you at the time? | 0:19:22 | 0:19:24
Given the catastrophic damage to both vehicles, | 0:19:24 | 0:19:27
it was clear it was a high-speed impact. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:29
The police suspected that a serious crime could have taken place. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:36
He had caused a horrific collision with massive damage. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:40
Death by careless driving carries a maximum prison sentence | 0:19:40 | 0:19:44
of five years, whereas death by dangerous driving | 0:19:44 | 0:19:48
carries a maximum sentence of 14 years. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
Significantly more serious. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:52
The driver had not been drinking or using a mobile phone. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:57
To charge him with the more serious offence, | 0:19:57 | 0:19:59
the SCIU would need to establish evidence that he'd been speeding. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:03
To show death by dangerous driving, | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
we needed to establish his speed | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
to see whether it was excessively high. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:11
But proving what has really happened in a car accident can be hard. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:15
To get to the truth, the police had just one option - | 0:20:16 | 0:20:19
examine the forensic evidence at the scene, | 0:20:19 | 0:20:22
starting with the tyre marks. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
How can tyre marks help you establish the speed? | 0:20:24 | 0:20:26
Basically, we work backwards from the resting position | 0:20:26 | 0:20:29
of the silver Fiesta, and in order to perform these calculations, | 0:20:29 | 0:20:34
what we do is a skid test. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:36
The SCIU drive the accident route with a machine | 0:20:36 | 0:20:40
that records and monitors how the car behaves in a skid. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
Crucially, the test revealed that there was no oil, | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
water or problems with the road surface | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
that could explain the Fiesta's loss of control. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
And there was another vital find. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
Data told us that after the vehicle had finished spinning | 0:20:56 | 0:21:01
as it rotated from the collision, it was travelling at 43mph. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
After the collision. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
OK, which is just fractionally under | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
-what the speed limit should be anyhow. -Exactly. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:11
Even though he's had such a severe impact. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:15
If the Fiesta was doing 43mph after the collision, | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
its speed before the crash must have been extremely high. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:22
And an examination of the wrecked car seemed to prove it. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
We saw that the speedometer of the Ford Fiesta was locked at 94mph. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:31
That's all the evidence you need, surely? Case watertight? | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
If only it was that simple. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:35
But the forensic lab found a major flaw in the evidence. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:39
The Fiesta's rev counter was stuck too, | 0:21:39 | 0:21:42
but at a rate that didn't match the speedo. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
With this inconsistency, | 0:21:45 | 0:21:46
the dangerous driving case could fall apart. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:49
Everything was going to come down to forensics with this case. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
Coming up... | 0:21:56 | 0:21:57
Could the SCIU gather enough evidence | 0:21:57 | 0:21:59
to proceed with a dangerous driving prosecution? | 0:21:59 | 0:22:02
We all know that unless you're on hands-free, | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
it's not legal to use a mobile while you're driving, | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12
but 30% of us admit to | 0:22:12 | 0:22:13
sending sneaky texts while we're at the wheel. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
How dangerous is it to use your phone in your car? | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
I've arranged to meet a group of women who love their phones | 0:22:19 | 0:22:23
to find out how safe they feel using them on the road. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
-How often do you use your phone in the car? -All the time. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:30
LAUGHTER | 0:22:30 | 0:22:31
-All the time! -All the time. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:32
I got a hands-free kit just so that my weekly calls to my mum, | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
I could do in the car on the way back. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:38
I use it for work, so I'll hit the hands-free | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
or sometimes I might forget to sort of connect it up, | 0:22:41 | 0:22:45
so I'm sort of scrambling around down the side | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
by the gear stick, trying to, | 0:22:48 | 0:22:50
you know, tap in the password to my phone to then connect it. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:54
Sometimes, it feels rude not to answer your phone, | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
especially if it's someone you talk to a lot, | 0:22:56 | 0:22:58
they know you're available, and you just feel like you have to, | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
or at least say, "I'm driving, I'll speak to you later on." | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
If I'm making a phone call, I take my phone out, | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
scroll through my contacts, and then I push the button, | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
so isn't that the same as, | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
almost practically the same as sending a text? | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12
Yeah, sending a text. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:13
For this lot, using the phone in the car is an everyday occurrence, | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
but the latest research suggests that all phone use, | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
including hands-free, | 0:23:20 | 0:23:21
has a potentially dangerous impact on your driving performance. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:26
To find out just how dangerous, | 0:23:26 | 0:23:27
I've brought Natalia and Stacey with me | 0:23:27 | 0:23:29
to the Transport Research Laboratory, | 0:23:29 | 0:23:31
so that Dr Nick Reed can put them through his tests. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:34
This is DigiCar, our driving simulator, | 0:23:34 | 0:23:37
and we're going to ask you to do three drives. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
One as a baseline, to see what your normal driving behaviour's like, | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
and then one whilst texting, and then one whilst using a hands-free, | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
and I'll be looking at the data, have a look and see how you do. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:49
They have just a few minutes to get used to both the simulator | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
and the route before starting phase one of the test. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
In this first part, Nick will mimic a hands-free conversation, | 0:23:56 | 0:24:00
by asking them a series of questions. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
And he will monitor how much taking a call distracts them from driving. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:07
If I say Jack stole Anne's ball, who is the thief? | 0:24:07 | 0:24:12
Er...Anne. Jack. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
What we've tried to create in the route is fairly typical | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
driving situations, someone braking unexpectedly, | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
someone pulling out, and we're looking to see if your responses | 0:24:20 | 0:24:23
-to that change if you're having to use a phone at the same time. -OK. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:27
If three chocolate bars cost 93 pence, | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
what is the cost of one chocolate bar? | 0:24:30 | 0:24:32
Three chocolate bars cost 90 pence? | 0:24:32 | 0:24:34
£2.70? | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
I was quite shocked at how I wasn't able to concentrate | 0:24:38 | 0:24:40
on what somebody was saying to me, | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
because I was concentrating on the road, | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
and how much concentration it takes. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:46
Section two of the test. They've now got to send a text | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
while Nick monitors the impact on their driving performance. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
She really isn't watching the road! Is that normal? | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
That is typical of what we see in these kinds of tests, | 0:24:56 | 0:24:58
and you can see she's drifting across into the opposing lane, | 0:24:58 | 0:25:01
and just notice there, she had to do a real sudden correction. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:06
Yeah, she's really finding it difficult. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:07
There are three parts to the distraction. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:09
She's thinking about how to compose the message, | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
she is taking her eyes off the road, to look at the phone, | 0:25:12 | 0:25:15
and she's clearly holding the phone | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
and taking her hand off the steering wheel, | 0:25:17 | 0:25:19
-so she's lost control in that respect. -Oh! There she goes. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:22
Those things together are really what contribute to the distraction. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:26
Wow! She very nearly drove into the side bank. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:31
Wow, really? Going to drive up the hill! | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
She's really moving all over the place now. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
Yes, this is fairly typical. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:38
She's lost control of the vehicle, | 0:25:38 | 0:25:40
drifting from one side of the lane to the other, | 0:25:40 | 0:25:42
and not managing to keep control. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
So, the text message has just arrived. | 0:25:46 | 0:25:48
I'm just not sure she would have done. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
The test is over. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
And now it's time for the results. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:55
Stacey, you had 10% slower reaction times, | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
but I think that's partly because you were engaging more | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
in the driving, rather than concentrating on the conversation. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:06
Natalia, your reaction times were about 30% slower, | 0:26:06 | 0:26:11
and your drifting was more than 100% more variable in the curves. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:16
Both of you, in fact, had driving that was | 0:26:16 | 0:26:18
worse than being at the legal limit of alcohol, | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
in terms of your reaction times, and control of the vehicle. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:25
That's really scary. Really scary. | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
That's a shocking revelation, | 0:26:27 | 0:26:29
that driving even hands-free can affect your reaction time | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
as much as being on the drink drive limit, | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
and is no safer than hand-held calls, | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
while the effect of texting can be even more dangerous. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:41
-SHE SIGHS -It was just... | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
frightening, how... | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
yeah, losing control of the car when I was texting. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:51
I think a quick "I'm going to be late home" is fine, | 0:26:51 | 0:26:53
but an in-depth conversation where you really have to concentrate... | 0:26:53 | 0:26:56
Just isn't worth it. | 0:26:56 | 0:26:58
My phone's going in the boot every time I get in the car now! | 0:26:58 | 0:27:02
No, no. It's lethal. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
It's just way too dangerous. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
SHE EXHALES | 0:27:09 | 0:27:11
I think the results today have shocked us all. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:14
None of us were expecting to hear that texting | 0:27:14 | 0:27:17
and speaking on your phone can be as dangerous as drink-driving. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:21
And I think from the results we've heard, | 0:27:21 | 0:27:24
all of our driving habits are going to change for ever. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:27
I'm in Cambridgeshire with Liam and his parents. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:33
Today, he's about to get a big wake-up call. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:37
Liam's mum has MS, and relies on him to get her around. | 0:27:37 | 0:27:40
But his bad attitude behind the wheel has been driving her round the bend. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:45
Our expert Sandra was pretty shocked by some of Liam's driving antics. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:49
She thinks he needs to change his attitude. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
So, we've lined up a day on a private test track | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
to teach Liam some home truths about speeding, | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
and why he needs to stick to the limit. | 0:27:57 | 0:27:59
Liam will be in this car. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:02
It's got a hydraulic base, and when activated, it recreates | 0:28:02 | 0:28:05
the kind of spin that would happen if he lost control on the open road. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:09
-Just won't know what hit him. -Here he goes, here he goes. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:12
Liam will be travelling at 45mph, almost the speed | 0:28:12 | 0:28:15
that he passed the school when we were following him. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:18
TYRES SCREECH | 0:28:18 | 0:28:20
One, two, three, four, five cones! | 0:28:20 | 0:28:23
-Oh, dear. -Ouch! | 0:28:23 | 0:28:26
Ooh, that must have really shook him up. It shook me up. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:30
-That'll definitely wake him up, won't it? -Yeah. -It will. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:32
That was...scary. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:34
If that were children, though... | 0:28:36 | 0:28:37
They wouldn't have a chance. | 0:28:37 | 0:28:39
-How are you feeling? -I didn't expect it to be that violent. | 0:28:39 | 0:28:42
I tried to steer out of it, but the car wasn't having any of it. | 0:28:42 | 0:28:45
-No, a total lack of control. -As soon as it was gone, it was gone. | 0:28:45 | 0:28:47
I couldn't control it. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:49
-It is quite a wake-up call, isn't it? -It is, yeah. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:51
A touch of reality, yeah. | 0:28:51 | 0:28:53
When I first met Liam, he admitted to speeding. | 0:28:53 | 0:28:56
His defence was that he was young, | 0:28:56 | 0:28:58
and his reactions are very quick, which I can't argue with. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:01
But quick reactions do not beat the laws of physics. | 0:29:01 | 0:29:04
Time to teach Liam another lesson. | 0:29:04 | 0:29:06
Now, Liam, it's not only skidding and corners we're worried about. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:12
The difference between avoiding disaster | 0:29:12 | 0:29:14
and being part of it is quite often just down to stopping distance. | 0:29:14 | 0:29:18
Now, we'll conduct a little experiment here. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:20
I want you to take that cone there and walk down the runway here, | 0:29:20 | 0:29:24
and place that at the point where you think your car would stop | 0:29:24 | 0:29:28
if you were doing 40mph | 0:29:28 | 0:29:30
and you applied the brakes on at that stop sign. | 0:29:30 | 0:29:32
-All right. -Off you go. | 0:29:32 | 0:29:34
-Roughly, about there. -OK. | 0:29:35 | 0:29:38
Right, now we're going to put it to the test. | 0:29:40 | 0:29:42
Liam believes he'll stop about 11 metres from the sign, | 0:29:42 | 0:29:45
which is a little more than the width of a tennis court. | 0:29:45 | 0:29:48
Here we go. Stop! | 0:29:50 | 0:29:52
TYRES SCREECH | 0:29:52 | 0:29:54
-OK. -He was a whole car length out, and remember, | 0:29:57 | 0:30:01
he knew he was going to have to stop, | 0:30:01 | 0:30:03
and that's not the case in an emergency situation on an open road. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:07
-That's the difference between a live child and a dead child. -Yeah. | 0:30:07 | 0:30:10
Could you have stopped any quicker? | 0:30:10 | 0:30:12
-No, I think was the quickest I could have done that. -OK. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:14
OK, Liam, Dominic here. I'd like you to do exactly the same thing, | 0:30:14 | 0:30:17
but this time, reach 50mph. | 0:30:17 | 0:30:19
Now, this is the sort of speed he feels quite comfortable doing, | 0:30:19 | 0:30:22
-isn't it? -Definitely. -Round those country roads. Here we go. | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
Stop! | 0:30:25 | 0:30:26 | |
TYRES SCREECH | 0:30:26 | 0:30:28
Ooh. Double the distance. | 0:30:32 | 0:30:35
Ooh indeed. At 50, he stopped 23 metres from the sign, | 0:30:35 | 0:30:39
just less than the length of an average swimming pool, | 0:30:39 | 0:30:42
and if he'd been in his heavy van, it would have been even more. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:44
Now, he's going at 60. | 0:30:44 | 0:30:46
-60 miles an hour. Get ready, get ready, get ready... -Stop! | 0:30:47 | 0:30:50
TYRES SCREECH | 0:30:50 | 0:30:53
Whoa! Look at that. | 0:30:53 | 0:30:55
He's stopped nearly 40 metres from the point he put the brakes on, | 0:30:55 | 0:30:58
and that's about the same distance as four double-decker buses end-to-end. | 0:30:58 | 0:31:03
And there's nothing he could do to make it quicker. | 0:31:03 | 0:31:05
Imagine if you didn't have such good tyres, good brakes... | 0:31:05 | 0:31:08
-Wet conditions, yeah. -Distracted by one of your mates. | 0:31:08 | 0:31:11
-You can imagine somewhere down there rather than here. -Yeah. | 0:31:11 | 0:31:14
-You can't argue with those distances, can you? -No, those distances are set. | 0:31:15 | 0:31:18
I mean, it doesn't matter how quickly you react. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:21
Those distances aren't going to change. | 0:31:21 | 0:31:23
-How much of a surprise was that for you? -That was a big surprise. | 0:31:23 | 0:31:26
You don't feel it when you're in a car. | 0:31:26 | 0:31:29
You can't judge it, but now we've done it, | 0:31:29 | 0:31:32
I can see it's a big difference. | 0:31:32 | 0:31:34
Finally, I want to show Liam just why the speed limit is 30 | 0:31:34 | 0:31:37
in residential areas. | 0:31:37 | 0:31:39
At 30mph, the average distance it takes to stop after braking | 0:31:39 | 0:31:43
is just over three car lengths, and that's where Mr Average is. | 0:31:43 | 0:31:47
Let's see how close he is to that cardboard cut-out. | 0:31:47 | 0:31:52
Here he comes at 30. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:53
-Stop! -TYRES SCREECH | 0:31:53 | 0:31:56
Oooh! | 0:31:57 | 0:31:59 | |
Mr Average is Mr Lucky. | 0:31:59 | 0:32:01
At 30, Liam is able to stop in time to avoid a collision. | 0:32:01 | 0:32:05
Now, he's going to do the same at 39. | 0:32:05 | 0:32:08
The reason we've asked him to do it again at that speed | 0:32:08 | 0:32:10
is because that's what we've seen him doing in a residential area. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:13
-Stop! -TYRES SCREECH | 0:32:13 | 0:32:17
Ooh! Mr Average is definitely Mr Unlucky. | 0:32:17 | 0:32:20
If that had been a real child... | 0:32:23 | 0:32:25
He'd be dead. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:26
-Or injured, seriously injured. -Yes. | 0:32:26 | 0:32:29
Particularly as he's gone underneath the vehicle as well. | 0:32:29 | 0:32:32
You know when you were at 30? | 0:32:32 | 0:32:33
There was probably a five-foot gap between you and that cut-out. | 0:32:33 | 0:32:37
That's the difference between 30mph and 39mph. | 0:32:37 | 0:32:40
That's the difference between life or death. | 0:32:40 | 0:32:42
Or a prison sentence. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:46
What you got to take into consideration as well, | 0:32:46 | 0:32:48
when you're coming down the runway there, you knew this was here. | 0:32:48 | 0:32:52
When there's accidents on the road, like this, it's quite often | 0:32:52 | 0:32:55
when you're not expecting it. | 0:32:55 | 0:32:57
When your reactions will be that fraction slower. | 0:32:57 | 0:32:59
You haven't got as much time to think about it, have you? | 0:32:59 | 0:33:02
It's there in front of you, then. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:03
After everything that you've been through today, | 0:33:03 | 0:33:05
what's the one thing that's really sort of shocked you? | 0:33:05 | 0:33:08
That 9mph, what difference it makes. | 0:33:08 | 0:33:10
-That, more than everything else? -Yeah, the speed. | 0:33:10 | 0:33:12
If you go a bit faster, your distances are just... | 0:33:12 | 0:33:15
Yeah. | 0:33:15 | 0:33:16 | |
It's been an eye-opening day for Liam, | 0:33:19 | 0:33:21
and I think the possible consequences of his speeding | 0:33:21 | 0:33:24
are starting to hit home. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:25
Earlier, we met Jodie, | 0:33:32 | 0:33:34
whose family are concerned that she's an accident waiting to happen. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:38
Today, Sandra will begin tackling some of Jodie's core issues, | 0:33:38 | 0:33:42
in an attempt to make her safer on the road. | 0:33:42 | 0:33:44
There's your friend. | 0:33:44 | 0:33:45
When you don't concentrate, you're pointing things out, | 0:33:45 | 0:33:48
you tend to swerve at the same time, and you veer off. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:50
Yeah, cos how can you hold the wheel straight | 0:33:50 | 0:33:52
and point at something at the same time? | 0:33:52 | 0:33:54
And I'm catching up with Sandra before they arrive. | 0:33:54 | 0:33:58
I'm really concerned about how distracted she gets. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:02
She's clearly unaware of all the traffic that surrounds her, | 0:34:02 | 0:34:04
she's not anticipating what they're going to do. | 0:34:04 | 0:34:06
She's coming into junctions, she's braking really late. | 0:34:06 | 0:34:09
It's not only her safety we're concerned about, | 0:34:09 | 0:34:11
it's everyone else out on the road. | 0:34:11 | 0:34:13
I still want to know what's going on today. There's something afoot. | 0:34:13 | 0:34:16
There sure is, Phil! | 0:34:16 | 0:34:18
Sandra's first challenge will show Jodie | 0:34:18 | 0:34:20
how much her lack of concentration and forward planning | 0:34:20 | 0:34:23
affect her driving. | 0:34:23 | 0:34:25
-Good morning! -Good morning. -How are you after yesterday? | 0:34:25 | 0:34:30
Well, I'm still a bit sad, actually, | 0:34:30 | 0:34:32
cos I don't actually think that I am a...terrible, terrible driver. | 0:34:32 | 0:34:38
-OK. Well...Phil, if you would like to take this bowl of water. -Thanks. | 0:34:38 | 0:34:44
Jodie, we would like you to drive the best you possibly can | 0:34:44 | 0:34:50
and not spill any of this water, | 0:34:50 | 0:34:52
which is going to be placed on Phil's lap. | 0:34:52 | 0:34:55
It might seem unusual, | 0:34:55 | 0:34:56
but it's a really well-established driving technique. | 0:34:56 | 0:34:59
What we're looking for is for some smooth braking, | 0:34:59 | 0:35:01
some anticipation of what other road users are going to do | 0:35:01 | 0:35:04
and trying to keep as much water in that bowl as possible. | 0:35:04 | 0:35:07
-Oh, dear. -Phil, you look nervous. | 0:35:07 | 0:35:09
I think I've got every reason to be. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:11
-LAUGHTER -I think I'm going to get wet. | 0:35:11 | 0:35:13
'Not necessarily, Phil.' | 0:35:13 | 0:35:15
Earlier, Sandra showed me how it's done. | 0:35:15 | 0:35:19
What I'm trying to do is I'm looking ahead, I'm planning, | 0:35:19 | 0:35:22
I'm scanning for any additional hazards, | 0:35:22 | 0:35:24
because what it will mean is that I'm not going to brake hard, | 0:35:24 | 0:35:27
keeping my steering nice and steady. | 0:35:27 | 0:35:29
What this will do is really demonstrate to her | 0:35:29 | 0:35:31
what she needs to do to improve that. | 0:35:31 | 0:35:33
Not a drop! | 0:35:33 | 0:35:35
-Oh, dear! -Thank you. | 0:35:37 | 0:35:38
The bowl contains five-and-a-half litres of water. | 0:35:38 | 0:35:41
If Jodie focuses and plans ahead, | 0:35:41 | 0:35:44
she shouldn't have to brake sharply and therefore won't spill a drop. | 0:35:44 | 0:35:47
-Don't blame me! -Better be driving carefully... | 0:35:47 | 0:35:50
It wasn't my idea. | 0:35:50 | 0:35:52
And we'll be trailing her to monitor the drive. | 0:35:52 | 0:35:55
-LAUGHING: -Oh, no! | 0:35:56 | 0:35:58
Oops - a bit too fast around that roundabout, I think. | 0:35:58 | 0:36:02
I'm trying hard, Philip! | 0:36:02 | 0:36:05
-Are you wet? -Yeah. | 0:36:06 | 0:36:08
It must be your stupid-shaped legs, then. | 0:36:08 | 0:36:11
Really, Jodie? Or was it the way you took that corner? | 0:36:11 | 0:36:14
-PHIL GROANS -There's a bump in the bloody road! | 0:36:15 | 0:36:18
It's not my fault! | 0:36:18 | 0:36:20
But if you'd been looking, Jodie, you could have slowed down. | 0:36:20 | 0:36:24
Oh...! | 0:36:24 | 0:36:26
Oh, Philip, I'm trying my best, here! | 0:36:26 | 0:36:29
Whoa... | 0:36:29 | 0:36:31
-Oh...! -Oh, dear... | 0:36:31 | 0:36:33
-LAUGHING: -The bloody van pulled out! | 0:36:33 | 0:36:36
I'll be very surprised if there's any water left. | 0:36:36 | 0:36:39
Oh, my God, I'm absolutely drenched. | 0:36:39 | 0:36:42
Hi...how much have you got left? | 0:36:42 | 0:36:46
JODIE LAUGHS | 0:36:46 | 0:36:47
-Absolutely none. -Wow...Phil... | 0:36:47 | 0:36:49
There's not a drop left in there. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:51
You look...wet, I'll be honest. | 0:36:51 | 0:36:53
Soaked, I think is the word. | 0:36:53 | 0:36:55
It was all going well until the last minute, when somebody pulled out. | 0:36:55 | 0:36:58
Hm...you're forgetting about the cameras in the car, Jodie. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:02
That's a definite case of braking too late. | 0:37:02 | 0:37:05
Whoa... | 0:37:05 | 0:37:07
Oh...! | 0:37:07 | 0:37:08
Jodie, you have still got a LOT of work to do, | 0:37:08 | 0:37:11
from what we've seen today. | 0:37:11 | 0:37:12
-Brace yourself. -Oh, dear. | 0:37:12 | 0:37:14
Jodie seems oblivious that her basic faults | 0:37:14 | 0:37:18
could easily cause an accident. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:20
'Time for a heart-to-heart.' | 0:37:20 | 0:37:22
When you come back home and there's a scrape down the car | 0:37:22 | 0:37:25
and maybe a wing mirror's come off, you've hit a wall, | 0:37:25 | 0:37:27
what do you think is going on? | 0:37:27 | 0:37:29
If you knock a wing mirror off, you can put it back on again. | 0:37:29 | 0:37:31
It's not like you've run someone over, is it? Know what I mean? | 0:37:31 | 0:37:34
But what happens if it's not a wing mirror? | 0:37:34 | 0:37:36
It's actually someone on a bicycle or crossing the road? | 0:37:36 | 0:37:39
That's never happened to me | 0:37:39 | 0:37:41
and I don't think I'm that careless, to get to that point. | 0:37:41 | 0:37:46
Yeah. | 0:37:46 | 0:37:47 | |
'She really doesn't seem aware of what she's doing wrong.' | 0:37:47 | 0:37:50
But yesterday, Sandra noticed that Jodie panics in busy traffic, | 0:37:50 | 0:37:55
causing her to make dangerous mistakes. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:57
She believes that improving Jodie's basic control of the car | 0:37:57 | 0:38:00
will build her confidence. | 0:38:00 | 0:38:02
So next, she wants Jodie to face her nemesis. | 0:38:02 | 0:38:05
As you can see, we're on a hill...any clues? | 0:38:07 | 0:38:11
No, please! | 0:38:11 | 0:38:13
What we've seen from your driving | 0:38:13 | 0:38:15
is that you are struggling with the basic control of the vehicle. | 0:38:15 | 0:38:18
So we are going to ask you to do a hill start. | 0:38:18 | 0:38:20
It's something that everybody must be able to do | 0:38:20 | 0:38:23
to pass a basic driving test. | 0:38:23 | 0:38:24
Oh, dear. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:26
Oh... | 0:38:26 | 0:38:27 | |
Ah! | 0:38:30 | 0:38:31 | |
Jodie? | 0:38:32 | 0:38:33
Just to make sure there's absolutely no backwards motion of the wheels, | 0:38:33 | 0:38:37
I'm going to put these behind them. | 0:38:37 | 0:38:40
-LAUGHING: -Oh, no! | 0:38:40 | 0:38:42
Good luck. | 0:38:42 | 0:38:43
'This is an important lesson in clutch control. | 0:38:43 | 0:38:46
'First, Jodie will show Sandra how she usually tackles a hill start.' | 0:38:46 | 0:38:50
She's very nervous when it comes to hill starts. | 0:38:50 | 0:38:52
Why? What are the things she does wrong? | 0:38:52 | 0:38:54
She usually rolls backwards... | 0:38:54 | 0:38:55
OK, when you're ready. | 0:38:55 | 0:38:57
-..which I suspect... -CHERRY SCREAMS | 0:38:57 | 0:38:59
..we're about to...see... | 0:38:59 | 0:39:01
HE LAUGHS | 0:39:01 | 0:39:03
TOOT | 0:39:03 | 0:39:04 | |
Handbrake on for me. | 0:39:04 | 0:39:05
It's not a "cracking" start... | 0:39:07 | 0:39:10
Will it be second time lucky? | 0:39:10 | 0:39:11
OK, Jodie - take two. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:14
Oh, the tension is mounting. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:16
It's really, really nerve-racking. | 0:39:16 | 0:39:18
JODIE SIGHS | 0:39:18 | 0:39:20
-Oh! -Argh! -Oh, only three! | 0:39:20 | 0:39:22
Oh, they're all gone. No, they're all gone. | 0:39:22 | 0:39:24
HORN TOOTS | 0:39:24 | 0:39:26
Yeah... | 0:39:26 | 0:39:28
'It's Hill 2-0 Jodie.' | 0:39:28 | 0:39:30
Now, can she do it under the "eggs-pert" guidance of Sandra? | 0:39:30 | 0:39:34
Get yourself into gear. | 0:39:34 | 0:39:35
That's it - before you do anything with the handbrake, | 0:39:37 | 0:39:39
I'd like you to find the biting point. | 0:39:39 | 0:39:41
Doing it nice and slowly. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:44
-Got it? -Mm-hm. -Keep your feet exactly where they are, do not move them, just put your handbrake down. | 0:39:44 | 0:39:48
Just put your handbrake down. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:49
-She's done it! -Yeah! | 0:39:51 | 0:39:54
Stop, stop the car! | 0:39:54 | 0:39:55
HE LAUGHS | 0:39:55 | 0:39:57
-Well done Jodie! -Amazing! | 0:39:57 | 0:40:01
-You did so well. -I couldn't believe it. | 0:40:01 | 0:40:03
-I think a dozen eggs is enough for today. -Yeah. -Yeah. | 0:40:03 | 0:40:06
It's skills like this | 0:40:06 | 0:40:08
that will make Jodie a better and safer driver. | 0:40:08 | 0:40:11
And the hard work's just begun. | 0:40:11 | 0:40:13
So what I haven't told you is that, in a few weeks, | 0:40:13 | 0:40:17
Sandra is going to set for you a driving test unlike any other. | 0:40:17 | 0:40:22
-LAUGHING: -Oh, my God! | 0:40:22 | 0:40:24
It is going to be very challenging, Jodie, | 0:40:24 | 0:40:27
because that is the only way | 0:40:27 | 0:40:29
that you can really prove to us and your family | 0:40:29 | 0:40:32
that you've really improved. | 0:40:32 | 0:40:34
-Are you ready? -I'm ready. | 0:40:34 | 0:40:36
-Good luck. -Thank you! | 0:40:36 | 0:40:38
Families who lose loved ones in a car crash | 0:40:44 | 0:40:46
want to know what happened | 0:40:46 | 0:40:48
and if a crime has been committed, they want justice - | 0:40:48 | 0:40:51
families like the Winters. | 0:40:51 | 0:40:53
Here in Cuckney Hill, Nottinghamshire, in August 2012, | 0:40:54 | 0:40:58
the investigation was under way into the fatal road accident | 0:40:58 | 0:41:01
that claimed the life of 24-year-old Luke Winter. | 0:41:01 | 0:41:05
Luke's family knew that the fate of the case rested in the hands | 0:41:05 | 0:41:08
of the East Midlands Serious Collision Investigation Unit. | 0:41:08 | 0:41:12
We all felt like we were on a mission | 0:41:12 | 0:41:14
to make sure that we did | 0:41:14 | 0:41:15
as much as we could, helping the police. | 0:41:15 | 0:41:18
We just wanted... | 0:41:19 | 0:41:20
We just wanted justice, that's all. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:24
The police suspected the driver was guilty of death by dangerous driving, | 0:41:26 | 0:41:30
but they had to prove it by gathering evidence that he had been speeding. | 0:41:30 | 0:41:34
They were forced to turn to a multimillion pound laser scanner. | 0:41:34 | 0:41:38
With this device, they could create a 3D model of the crash site. | 0:41:38 | 0:41:41
I've got all this data available to me, | 0:41:43 | 0:41:45
and I was able to calculate a theoretical maximum speed | 0:41:45 | 0:41:48
for the bend where he lost control. | 0:41:48 | 0:41:51
-OK, what was that speed? -88mph. | 0:41:51 | 0:41:53
In theory, the Fiesta must have been doing more than 88mph | 0:41:53 | 0:41:57
to lose control. | 0:41:57 | 0:41:59
But theory alone isn't enough in a court of law. | 0:41:59 | 0:42:02
The police needed to show that it is possible to drive the bend | 0:42:02 | 0:42:05
safely at that speed | 0:42:05 | 0:42:07
to prove that the Fiesta was going even faster. | 0:42:07 | 0:42:10
Mark is an elite Class 1 advanced police driver. | 0:42:12 | 0:42:15
We're about to repeat the same test that was done at the time | 0:42:15 | 0:42:18
to prove Mark's calculations. | 0:42:18 | 0:42:20
Obviously, this is a public road and it could be a dangerous experiment. | 0:42:20 | 0:42:23
So Mark's got officers at either end, holding back the traffic, | 0:42:23 | 0:42:26
so effectively, for the time being, this is a safe road for us | 0:42:26 | 0:42:29
to do it on, correct? | 0:42:29 | 0:42:30
OK, time is of the essence - off we go. | 0:42:30 | 0:42:32
-Wow - we were really motoring then, weren't we? -Yeah. | 0:42:51 | 0:42:54
What speed did we reach, the exact one? | 0:42:54 | 0:42:56
86mph. | 0:42:56 | 0:42:58
We believe that the Fiesta driver exceeded that speed on the night | 0:42:58 | 0:43:02
and that's why he experienced the loss of control that he did | 0:43:02 | 0:43:05
and why the event happened. | 0:43:05 | 0:43:08
Their relentless pursuit of the facts | 0:43:08 | 0:43:10
enabled the SCIU to prove their suspicions of dangerous driving. | 0:43:10 | 0:43:14
We reported to the courts that his speed was 94mph | 0:43:14 | 0:43:18
and the defence accepted that. | 0:43:18 | 0:43:20
At Nottingham Crown Court in July 2013, | 0:43:21 | 0:43:25
Joseph Weston pleaded guilty to causing the death of Luke Winter | 0:43:25 | 0:43:28
through dangerous driving. | 0:43:28 | 0:43:30
The judge placed this offence in the most serious category | 0:43:30 | 0:43:34
of causing death by dangerous driving. | 0:43:34 | 0:43:36
There are three levels and he placed it in level one. | 0:43:36 | 0:43:39
An appeal and reductions brought the penalty down in the end. | 0:43:39 | 0:43:43
But the evidence gathered by the SCIU meant that the judge was able | 0:43:43 | 0:43:47
to sentence for the more serious charge of dangerous driving, | 0:43:47 | 0:43:51
starting with an initial term of nine years in jail. | 0:43:51 | 0:43:54
What about that, eh? | 0:43:55 | 0:43:57
The SCIU had succeeded in securing a conviction for dangerous driving | 0:44:00 | 0:44:05
but for the family, the pain of Luke's death remains. | 0:44:05 | 0:44:08
What's happened to our family has been devastating, and, uh... | 0:44:08 | 0:44:12
what I'd say to any young person is...the carnage that you could | 0:44:12 | 0:44:18
possibly leave behind by choosing to drive quickly | 0:44:18 | 0:44:22
and recklessly just devastates people's lives, | 0:44:22 | 0:44:27
probably your own life as well, and probably your own family's life. | 0:44:27 | 0:44:33
So you just really need to consider | 0:44:33 | 0:44:38
what the consequences possibly could be | 0:44:38 | 0:44:40
before you decide to speed. | 0:44:40 | 0:44:42
It's just days until Liam and Jodie's final tests. | 0:44:48 | 0:44:52
Get that right... | 0:44:52 | 0:44:54
In the Wirral, for once, Phil's in charge. | 0:44:54 | 0:44:57
What's the dangers of this road? | 0:44:57 | 0:44:59
Going round a bend, so you don't know what's round the corner. | 0:44:59 | 0:45:02
Liam's personal coaches have been employing some...novel tools | 0:45:02 | 0:45:06
to alert him to his speeding. | 0:45:06 | 0:45:07
TOY SQUEAKS | 0:45:07 | 0:45:09
What? | 0:45:11 | 0:45:12 | |
SHE LAUGHS | 0:45:12 | 0:45:15
SQUEAKING | 0:45:18 | 0:45:20
SQUEAK! | 0:45:22 | 0:45:23
And Jodie's not shouting at Phil - that's a good sign. | 0:45:29 | 0:45:33
OK, I'm going to pick a space...and I'm going to reverse into it. | 0:45:33 | 0:45:38
Well done, you remembered to indicate. | 0:45:38 | 0:45:40
Not bad! | 0:45:42 | 0:45:43
That was good, then, I assessed the space. | 0:45:44 | 0:45:46
Normally, I would've tried to get through, | 0:45:46 | 0:45:48
it would've been a wing mirror incident. | 0:45:48 | 0:45:50
But have they done enough to prove they've changed their ways? | 0:45:50 | 0:45:53
I feel the prospect of doing a driving test nerve-racking, | 0:45:53 | 0:45:58
despite all the practice I've been doing, | 0:45:58 | 0:46:01
because it would be, like, total pressure to get things right. | 0:46:01 | 0:46:05
The driving test, yeah - I mean, looking forward to it, | 0:46:05 | 0:46:08
really, I like a challenge. | 0:46:08 | 0:46:10
I don't know how well I'm going to do on it. | 0:46:10 | 0:46:12
Sandra's a tough woman to please, | 0:46:12 | 0:46:13
so...I'm hoping that I've done well enough to impress her. | 0:46:13 | 0:46:18
It's the big day - Liam and Jodie are about to face their final challenges | 0:46:20 | 0:46:24
in order to prove to their families that they are now safe on the road. | 0:46:24 | 0:46:28
So we know that all of Jodie's driving habits | 0:46:28 | 0:46:31
get a lot worse the busier the roads get. | 0:46:31 | 0:46:34
So Sandra's setting her the ultimate driving challenge. | 0:46:34 | 0:46:37
She's going to make her drive on the roads of the UK's busiest city - | 0:46:37 | 0:46:41
London. | 0:46:41 | 0:46:42
With over 2.5 million vehicles on London's roads, | 0:46:42 | 0:46:46
this is going to be a real stretch for Jodie | 0:46:46 | 0:46:49
and something she couldn't even have attempted a month ago. | 0:46:49 | 0:46:52
-Watch out! -BLEEP! | 0:46:53 | 0:46:55
Then, she rarely remembered what her indicators were for. | 0:46:55 | 0:46:58
CAR HORN BLARES | 0:46:58 | 0:47:00
Ooh... | 0:47:00 | 0:47:01
What was I supposed to do?! | 0:47:01 | 0:47:02
Her favourite road position was frightening oncoming traffic... | 0:47:02 | 0:47:06
She's right out to the right-hand side of the road. | 0:47:06 | 0:47:08
..and after so many near misses, | 0:47:08 | 0:47:09
her family worried it was only a matter of time | 0:47:09 | 0:47:12
before she was involved in a nasty accident. | 0:47:12 | 0:47:15
-Stop! -I am stopping! | 0:47:15 | 0:47:17
In central London, Jodie's about to start her test. | 0:47:19 | 0:47:22
OK, so, if you're ready... | 0:47:22 | 0:47:24
Let's drive. | 0:47:24 | 0:47:25
-SIGHING DEEPLY: -OK. | 0:47:25 | 0:47:26
So what's Sandra going to be looking for in Jodie's test? | 0:47:26 | 0:47:29
Sandra is looking for three key things from Jodie. | 0:47:29 | 0:47:32
Is she concentrating on what she's doing? | 0:47:32 | 0:47:35
Is she aware of what everyone else is doing? | 0:47:35 | 0:47:37
And, crucially, can she cope with the stress of busy traffic | 0:47:37 | 0:47:42
or will it still affect her driving? | 0:47:42 | 0:47:44
Sandra's created a tough route to test Jodie's skills to the max. | 0:47:44 | 0:47:48
She'll have to avoid taking in the many sights of Piccadilly Circus, | 0:47:48 | 0:47:52
tackle a busy dual carriageway at Buckingham Palace | 0:47:52 | 0:47:55
and the testing roads around Trafalgar Square... | 0:47:55 | 0:47:58
..and all while keeping her cool - | 0:48:00 | 0:48:02
something the old Jodie would have really struggled with. | 0:48:02 | 0:48:05
# London calling to the faraway towns... # | 0:48:05 | 0:48:08
That was a nice, slow stop - | 0:48:08 | 0:48:10
you wouldn't have spilt any water then, Jodie. | 0:48:10 | 0:48:12
Mm, and courtesy to other drivers - that's a big change. | 0:48:13 | 0:48:18
Oh - she's concentrating so hard on what's ahead, | 0:48:18 | 0:48:21
she hasn't noticed that lorry indicating. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:24
But she's still uncommonly quiet - | 0:48:25 | 0:48:28
the old Jodie would have been screaming by now. | 0:48:28 | 0:48:31
While Jodie tackles the traffic, | 0:48:32 | 0:48:34
in East Sussex, Liam's preparing to travel to London for his test. | 0:48:34 | 0:48:38
It was Liam's bad attitude behind the wheel that was scaring his family. | 0:48:40 | 0:48:44
Will you slow down a bit, please? | 0:48:44 | 0:48:46
And we've seen the dangers caused by his love of speed | 0:48:46 | 0:48:49
more than ably demonstrated... | 0:48:49 | 0:48:51
He's just driven past that school at 50. | 0:48:51 | 0:48:52
..from his aggressive driving on country roads... | 0:48:52 | 0:48:55
-Was there any reason to overtake? -Yeah. | 0:48:55 | 0:48:57
..to shooting off at junctions. | 0:48:57 | 0:48:59
We've lost him again. | 0:48:59 | 0:49:00
Over the past few weeks, we've shown him what could happen | 0:49:02 | 0:49:05
if his luck runs out. | 0:49:05 | 0:49:07
-If that were children, though... -He wouldn't have a chance. | 0:49:07 | 0:49:10
..and taught him how to be a better, safer driver. | 0:49:10 | 0:49:13
It's the difference between life or death. | 0:49:13 | 0:49:15
But has it worked? | 0:49:15 | 0:49:16
So, what about your test for Liam? | 0:49:19 | 0:49:21
Well, Liam thinks he can handle his car - | 0:49:21 | 0:49:23
he certainly doesn't have any problem with manoeuvres. | 0:49:23 | 0:49:25
Now, if this was a traditional driving test, | 0:49:25 | 0:49:27
I've no doubt Liam would stick to the speed limit. | 0:49:27 | 0:49:30
So the question is, what is he like if we're not around? | 0:49:30 | 0:49:33
We've led Liam to believe that when he gets here, | 0:49:33 | 0:49:35
Sandra's got a test for him. | 0:49:35 | 0:49:36
Uh-uh - not the case at all. | 0:49:36 | 0:49:39
In actual fact, what Liam doesn't know | 0:49:39 | 0:49:41
is that one of the cameras rigged in his car | 0:49:41 | 0:49:43
also records his speed. | 0:49:43 | 0:49:45
So Sandra will be able to monitor every second of his drive here. | 0:49:45 | 0:49:49
Liam's driving on roads we know he's sped on in the past. | 0:49:56 | 0:49:59
And I'm glad to see he's going at a safe speed | 0:50:01 | 0:50:04
approaching these walkers. Good lad. | 0:50:04 | 0:50:06
Back with Jodie, and for someone with distraction issues, | 0:50:10 | 0:50:13
the city is offering many challenges. | 0:50:13 | 0:50:16
Wow! | 0:50:17 | 0:50:18 | |
All right, Jodie. Eyes on the road. | 0:50:18 | 0:50:20
She's definitely checking her rear-view mirror. | 0:50:26 | 0:50:29
CAR HORN BEEPS | 0:50:29 | 0:50:31
Oops, was that a bit of lane straddling? | 0:50:31 | 0:50:34
But there's good work when it comes to staying out of the cycle box. | 0:50:36 | 0:50:39
Are you aware of the building in front of you? | 0:50:39 | 0:50:41
I didn't want to look at it too much cos | 0:50:41 | 0:50:43
I don't want to lose concentration when the lights change. | 0:50:43 | 0:50:47
Didn't want to look? Who is this woman? | 0:50:47 | 0:50:49
That's it Jodie, keep breathing. | 0:50:49 | 0:50:52
Liam's been driving for almost two hours, | 0:50:53 | 0:50:55
and he's travelling through residential areas. | 0:50:55 | 0:50:59
Oh, nicely done. | 0:50:59 | 0:51:01
He wouldn't have been able to stop for that runner | 0:51:01 | 0:51:03
if he'd been speeding. | 0:51:03 | 0:51:04
It's just about keeping your eyes open at what's going off around you. | 0:51:06 | 0:51:09
Isn't it? | 0:51:09 | 0:51:10
And he did, didn't he? | 0:51:10 | 0:51:11
Jodie's coming towards the end of her test now. | 0:51:13 | 0:51:17
Would you like to stop halfway up the ramp for me. | 0:51:17 | 0:51:19
I'd like you to stop there for me. Stop. | 0:51:19 | 0:51:20
So, why have I asked you to stop here? | 0:51:27 | 0:51:29
Cos you're going to make me do a hill start. | 0:51:29 | 0:51:32
When you're ready, Jodie. | 0:51:32 | 0:51:34
Drive on. | 0:51:35 | 0:51:36
Yes! No egg on your face this time, Jodie. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:47
Right, Jodie, that is the end of your test, so thank you. | 0:51:48 | 0:51:50
How do you think it went? | 0:51:50 | 0:51:52
I was nervous but I think it went OK. | 0:51:52 | 0:51:55
I'm sure Phil wants to catch up with you, | 0:51:55 | 0:51:56
so we'll let you go and talk to him and I'll catch up with you later. | 0:51:56 | 0:52:00
-All right. -Thank you. | 0:52:00 | 0:52:01
At least Phil's feeling good. | 0:52:03 | 0:52:04
I'm tremendously proud of the fact that she's actually driven | 0:52:04 | 0:52:07
round central London, knowing how busy it is | 0:52:07 | 0:52:09
and how difficult the traffic can be, and I'm amazed you came back. | 0:52:09 | 0:52:13
Seriously, though. It's absolutely fantastic. | 0:52:13 | 0:52:16
I'm not entirely surprised because I have seen a dramatic transformation | 0:52:16 | 0:52:20
in Jodie's driving over the last couple of weeks. | 0:52:20 | 0:52:24
Result! | 0:52:24 | 0:52:26
Liam's arriving, and he's still got no idea that he's now actually | 0:52:26 | 0:52:30
completed his challenge. | 0:52:30 | 0:52:31
So, has he shown the attitude change that Sandra wants to see? | 0:52:31 | 0:52:35
Liam, do us a favour, pass us that little box up there, please. | 0:52:35 | 0:52:38
And jump on out. | 0:52:39 | 0:52:40
Now, we asked you to come down here today to do a test. | 0:52:40 | 0:52:45
You're not happy, are you? You're not happy at all. Why are you laughing? | 0:52:45 | 0:52:48
He hates driving in London. | 0:52:48 | 0:52:50
-So you're not looking forward to this test? -No. -OK. | 0:52:50 | 0:52:53
-How long did it take you to get down here today? -Too long. | 0:52:53 | 0:52:56
-It took us about two and a half hours, didn't it? -OK. | 0:52:56 | 0:52:59
The good news is... | 0:52:59 | 0:53:01
you haven't got to do that test of driving round London. | 0:53:01 | 0:53:03
Why is that, then? | 0:53:03 | 0:53:05
He's just done it, hasn't he? | 0:53:05 | 0:53:06
The penny has just dropped. | 0:53:06 | 0:53:08
You have just done your test. | 0:53:08 | 0:53:10
This little box here has been recording your every move, | 0:53:10 | 0:53:14
your speed and how you've been driving on the way down. | 0:53:14 | 0:53:17
Sandra's going to analyse that. | 0:53:17 | 0:53:19
You see, there's no point in getting you down here saying, | 0:53:19 | 0:53:22
"We're going to get you to do a test," cos what would you do? | 0:53:22 | 0:53:24
You'd drive all sensible, you'd do 28mph in a 30mph speed limit, | 0:53:24 | 0:53:27
-you wouldn't be jumping any lights, would you? -No. | 0:53:27 | 0:53:31
You'd be on your best behaviour, Liam. We're not daft, you know. | 0:53:31 | 0:53:35
Are you feeling confident? | 0:53:35 | 0:53:36
Yeah, I'm always feeling confident. | 0:53:36 | 0:53:38
I'm going to get it over to Sandra. Make yourselves comfy. | 0:53:38 | 0:53:41
I hope I've done all right. | 0:53:41 | 0:53:43
Sandra is a very tough woman to please, | 0:53:43 | 0:53:45
so if I pass this I'd be very impressed with myself. | 0:53:45 | 0:53:48
And so will we. | 0:53:49 | 0:53:50
A short time later, and having reviewed the footage, | 0:53:50 | 0:53:53
we're catching up with Sandra. | 0:53:53 | 0:53:55
So, Sandra, what about Liam? | 0:53:55 | 0:53:56
We all know what his problem was, don't we? | 0:53:56 | 0:53:58
I've looked at Liam's video. | 0:53:58 | 0:53:59
We know from when we saw him before he has a real issue with speed, | 0:53:59 | 0:54:03
particularly on country roads. | 0:54:03 | 0:54:04
But, Sandra, two and a half hours is an awful long time for someone | 0:54:04 | 0:54:09
to stay within the speed limit. | 0:54:09 | 0:54:11
Yes, but if he speeds, he fails. | 0:54:11 | 0:54:13
And what about Jodie? | 0:54:13 | 0:54:15
We know that she does get really distracted by pretty much | 0:54:15 | 0:54:19
anything in the past. | 0:54:19 | 0:54:20
You can't afford to make those sort of mistakes in a city like this, | 0:54:20 | 0:54:23
-can you? -Sandra, so, you know what you're going to say to Jodie? | 0:54:23 | 0:54:25
-I do. -Yeah? | 0:54:25 | 0:54:27
-OK. -And you know what you're going to tell Liam? -Yes. -Right, let's go. | 0:54:27 | 0:54:30
Welcome, everybody. | 0:54:34 | 0:54:36
So, you finished your final drive, | 0:54:36 | 0:54:39
but it's up to Sandra to tell us whether you've passed or failed. | 0:54:39 | 0:54:44
Let's start off with you, Liam. How do you think you've done? | 0:54:44 | 0:54:47
I tried my best. Erm... | 0:54:47 | 0:54:48
Yeah. | 0:54:48 | 0:54:50 | |
This very morning you were driving down a road. | 0:54:50 | 0:54:52
That road didn't have a pavement. | 0:54:54 | 0:54:56
Had you been speeding | 0:54:56 | 0:54:57
we might have been dealing with a very nasty incident. | 0:54:57 | 0:55:00
There was also an occasion when a runner ran right out in front of you. | 0:55:00 | 0:55:04
Again, you weren't speeding. You were driving sensibly. | 0:55:04 | 0:55:08
That runner will live to run another day. | 0:55:08 | 0:55:11
Jodie, on your drive you did show real progress. | 0:55:11 | 0:55:15
The old Jodie did love to shout at other drivers, | 0:55:15 | 0:55:19
but this time you were much more courteous. | 0:55:19 | 0:55:22
But there were still some issues. | 0:55:23 | 0:55:25
Your observation wasn't quite up to scratch, | 0:55:25 | 0:55:28
and you didn't see a big lorry indicating. | 0:55:28 | 0:55:32
But you stayed out of the cycle junction boxes, | 0:55:33 | 0:55:36
and finally, you coped really well in a very, very busy city. | 0:55:36 | 0:55:41
Now, Liam, the question is - on your way down here today, | 0:55:42 | 0:55:45
did you manage to keep your foot off the gas? | 0:55:45 | 0:55:48
Don't know. | 0:55:49 | 0:55:50
This is Sandra's test, so it's up to her whether you passed or failed. | 0:55:50 | 0:55:53
Liam, your driving is now totally unrecognisable from the day | 0:55:53 | 0:55:57
we first saw you when we actually couldn't even keep up with you. | 0:55:57 | 0:56:00
That's a smile and a half, isn't it? Look! | 0:56:00 | 0:56:03
The data recorder shows us that in the two and a half hours | 0:56:03 | 0:56:06
it took you to get here today you didn't speed once. | 0:56:06 | 0:56:08
You've shown that you can be a safe and courteous driver, | 0:56:08 | 0:56:11
and on that basis I am happy to give you a pass. | 0:56:11 | 0:56:14
-So congratulations. -Wow! -Thank you. -Yeah! | 0:56:14 | 0:56:16
-How do you feel, Janet? -I'm really chuffed, yeah. -Good. | 0:56:16 | 0:56:19
OK, I can't cope with the tension any more. | 0:56:19 | 0:56:22
-Jodie, are you confident or are you nervous? -I'm nervous. | 0:56:22 | 0:56:27
I really put a lot into it and I tried hard, | 0:56:27 | 0:56:31
and I could concentrate better cos Phil wasn't in the car. | 0:56:31 | 0:56:35
So overall... | 0:56:35 | 0:56:36
Sandra... | 0:56:36 | 0:56:38
did Jodie pass? | 0:56:38 | 0:56:40
Jodie, you have made considerable improvements in your driving | 0:56:41 | 0:56:44
since I saw you, but there is sometimes a lack of awareness | 0:56:44 | 0:56:49
and anticipation of other road users. | 0:56:49 | 0:56:52
However, I am happy to give you a pass. | 0:56:52 | 0:56:55
Woohoo! | 0:56:55 | 0:56:56
-You go, girl! -But... -Good job. | 0:56:58 | 0:57:01
The but is that you do have to promise to continue the | 0:57:01 | 0:57:04
practice with Phil regarding your homework and continued observations. | 0:57:04 | 0:57:09
-Are you happy, Jodie? -I'm made up, mate! -I couldn't tell! | 0:57:09 | 0:57:12
Phil did say if I passed he'd buy me a new car. | 0:57:12 | 0:57:16
Jodie, straight to the car showroom. | 0:57:16 | 0:57:17
I've learnt a lot from this. | 0:57:19 | 0:57:20
Speed was my biggest issue and I think I've fixed it. | 0:57:20 | 0:57:23
You know, he's grown up a lot in these last few weeks. | 0:57:23 | 0:57:26
I'm really proud of him. | 0:57:26 | 0:57:28
It's absolutely brilliant that you've improved your driving | 0:57:28 | 0:57:31
to that standard, but there's more work to do. | 0:57:31 | 0:57:33
Yeah, I know, but I still passed and you said I wouldn't! | 0:57:33 | 0:57:37
-You did pass, that's true. -It's great! | 0:57:37 | 0:57:39
You know, that's two drivers who are now considerably safer on the roads. | 0:57:44 | 0:57:47
But I think Jodie wins the prize for most improved | 0:57:47 | 0:57:50
and definitely most enthusiastic. | 0:57:50 | 0:57:51
Yeah, but hang on a second, Liam had to do a two and a half hour | 0:57:51 | 0:57:54
driving test, and it's not a competition, Cherry! | 0:57:54 | 0:57:56
-All right. Call it evens, yeah, just this time. -OK. | 0:57:56 | 0:57:59
I'm going to give you that one. | 0:57:59 | 0:58:00
But there's plenty more people out there who could do with our help. | 0:58:00 | 0:58:03
All right. Let's go. I'm driving, though. | 0:58:03 | 0:58:06
Buckle up. | 0:58:07 | 0:58:08 |
