Lots of different animals make excellent pets and we love

Today, we're in West Sussex to meet Florence and her pony.

-And you must be Florence's mum? Hello.

-My puppy.

Aw. He's very, very cute, but I thought we were meeting a pony.

-You are. Come on, I'll show you.

-Great.

COCKREL CROWS Wow. Who are all these guys?

-My ducks and chickens.

-They're amazing.

-Do you get eggs from them?

-Yeah.

-Lucky you.

DUCKS QUACK

Wow. Who is this?

-That's Larry.

-A Llama called Larry?

-Yeah.

That's Sheep. And that's Starlight and her baby. And that's Rosie.

You've got so many animals. Are you sure that you don't live in a zoo?

-Yes.

-But I still haven't seen your pony. Where's she?

-There.

-Here, Kitty. Here, Kitty.

Hello, Kitty. Hiya.

-Wow. She's beautiful, isn't she?

-Yeah.

-What sort of pony is Kitty?

-Welsh Mountain.

-I know a couple of things about Welsh Mountain ponies.

I know that they're strong, but also that they're friendly, aren't they?

-Yeah.

-How old is Kitty?

-12.

-12 years old.

-She only just had her birthday.

And when did you get her?

-For my third birthday.

-You got her for your birthday? You are so lucky.

What is your absolute favourite thing about Kitty?

-She's nice to ride and she's nice and cuddly.

-Aw. Isn't that lovely?

Having a nice cuddle?

Well, I think that she is a very lovely pony, indeed.

Ferne, can you give us some fun facts about ponies just like Kitty?

Of course, Rory. One.

The difference between a pony and a horse is that a pony is smaller

and its mane and tail are sometimes thicker.

Two.

Baby ponies are called foals

and a foal can stand up really soon after being born.

Three.

Ponies have very special ears.

They can turn them towards a sound that they have just heard to

hear where it is coming from.

Four. Ponies' feet are called "hooves".

A hoof is like a big, giant toenail that needs to be clipped sometimes.

DOG BARKS CHILDREN: Care Time

Ponies are amazing pets if you've the space and time

to look after them properly. Florence has a big field for Kitty to run

-around in and eat lots of grass, don't you?

-Yeah.

What else do you need to look after Kitty, Florence?

-I'll show you.

-OK, let's go then.

-Here, Kitty.

We always make sure Kitty has fresh water.

-Can you put the water down here, please?

-Okey doke. Just here.

-There we go.

-We have to keep Kitty's stable nice and clean.

Right, what do we need to do?

-We need to pick poo up.

-Oh, brilliant.

-Let's see who can pick up the biggest poo.

-Heh.

-So, is this is where Kitty sleeps at night?

-Yeah.

-Do you have to do this every day?

-Yeah.

Into the wheelbarrow.

What's your favourite job to do looking after Kitty?

-All of the jobs.

-All of the jobs?

-Yeah.

-Every single one?

-Yeah.

-I didn't know a pony could do so much poo, did you?

-Ha-ha.

-Good work. Right, all done, then.

-Now, we're going to a gymkhana show.

I have never been to a gymkhana before.

That's going to be amazing. A gymkhana is a special horse and

pony show, where there are lots of competitions to join in with.

-It's going to be great, isn't it?

-Yeah.

-Are we ready to leave?

-No.

-No? What do we need to do?

-We have to groom Kitty and wash her.

That sounds like a very good idea. Come on, let's go then.

-Right, what first?

-We're going to do hoof picking before the washing.

You have to lift the leg up, but stroke your hand down the leg

-and then pick her hoof up.

-OK.

There we go.

We have to pick her hooves every day

to make sure there are no stones or dirt stuck in there.

Hm. This a grubby one.

Well done.

Excellent. Right... What are we going to do now?

-We're going to brush her.

-OK, right.

We're trying to get most of the dirt out and then we'll wash her.

Giving Kitty a bath is great fun. We use special pony shampoo.

-I'll do this bit of her.

-OK. I'll get this bit over the side.

We need to rinse her off now.

-What next?

-We have to dry her.

-Just go...

-Ah.

Ha-ha. It's quite fun, isn't it?

And you have to do her legs with it, too.

OK, we'll make sure we get them.

-There we go. What do you think? Does she look great?

-Yeah.

-Yes, good girl.

Looking fabulous. OK, Kitty's looking great, but look at us! What a mess!

-Yeah.

-We better get ourselves ready.

MEOW CHILDREN: Wash your hands.

Oh. Well, we're looking great and ready to go, aren't we?

-Yeah.

-I think you're a bit smarter, aren't you?

-Yeah.

-But this gymkhana's

-going to be fantastic, isn't it?

-Yeah, I can't wait.

-Yes. And what about Kitty? What do you think?

-Ahum.

-All set?

-Yeah.

-She's looking fantastic.

Now, if Kitty could do anything, anything at all, what would she do?

KITTY NEIGHS

If my pet could do anything, she would work at the fairground.

She would be a pony on the carousel. She would give people rides.

And then, when the fairground was closed for the day...

-BOING BOING BOING

-..she would jump off the carousel,

she would go on the bouncy castle and eat pony-floss.

We've come to the local gymkhana today

to enter some of the games and competitions. Florence and Kitty are

-raring to go, aren't you?

-Yeah!

-And there are lots of other horses

and ponies here. Let's go and take a look around, come on.

PONY NEIGHS There are lots of different events

you can enter at a horse and pony show like this one.

Jumping,

obstacle courses

and lots more.

Now, it's time for us to join in.

Florence, you've obviously got Kitty, but what have I got? Well...

My trusty hobbyhorse...Fred.

FLORENCE LAUGHS What do you think? I can't believe

you're laughing. We've won quite a few races.

-We've both got our riding hats on. What for?

-Because if we fall off it

-won't hurt our heads.

-Yes, absolutely right. It's going to keep

-us safe. Now, what is the first event we're going to do?

-Jumping!

Let's go then, come on!

Florence and Kitty are making sure that they are all ready to go

and are going to give the jumping competition their best shot.

Florence. Come on! You can do it! Go fast!

-Mummy, they're really nice.

-Whoo! Come on, Florence and Kitty.

We flew around.

-Well done. A rosette! Are you pleased with that?

-Yeah.

I think Fred wants to go and have a nap in the stables.

I think I want a nap as well.

There's no time for napping though.

Now, it's time for the gymkhana games.

-Is everybody ready?

-ALL: Yes!

And first up is the Mug Race. We've got to move the mugs from one pole to

another as fast as we can. Give me five, give me five. Owww!

Oh. Now, the Sack Race. We have to ride up and jump back in the sack.

Great fun.

I'm very happy. I had a great time with my new friends.

-We had SO much fun together.

-That is amazing.

-Well, Jellybean's just having a little bit of a cuddle.

-Aw.

He certainly looks very happy. Pets are brilliant,

but remember you shouldn't touch an animal unless the owner says it's OK.
