Thieves will steal our cars, our valuables, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
just about anything they can get their hands on. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:09
To cut down on crime and anti-social behaviour, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
police and other agencies are using new technology and tactics | 0:00:11 | 0:00:15
when the bad guys are actually getting caught in the act. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
I can see the man actually commit a robbery. Lovely. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
Thank you very much. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
Local councils, shops and businesses are laying some traps of their own. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
Why should we feel frightened for the rest of our lives? | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
And the general public, too, can help unsuspecting crooks get their comeuppance. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
No way are you getting away. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
-We did it for everyone else as well, that she might be stealing from. -We will name and shame you. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:39
So anyone who is up to no good had better think twice. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:43
They might just get caught red-handed. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
Today, a tale of shops and robbers. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
A crowd of thieves arrive suddenly to bamboozle a shopkeeper. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
-They called me here, called me there. -And they have a hidden purpose. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
It wasn't a shoplifting. The real target of the gang was to get into the flat to take | 0:01:02 | 0:01:07
the money and take the jewellery. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
Also today: | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
What do you do when people dump rubbish on your doorstep? | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
We had the camera in this particular location here. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
An angling club goes fishing for fly-tippers | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
and hooks a couple of crooks. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
And jewellery robbers make a quick getaway but not quick enough, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
because they can't outrun the cameras. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
The beautiful South Wales countryside. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
In one of the valleys sits a small village called Cilfynydd. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
This convenience store usually serves the locals and a few tourists. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
It doesn't normally have more than three or four customers at once. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
But all of a sudden, this one day in March, business is booming. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
Customers just keep flooding in. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
A few days later, a different shop | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
but a similar-looking crowd of customers arrive all at once. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
Good for takings, you'd think. Well, yes. But not for the shopkeeper. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:17
It's this gang that's doing the taking, because they're thieves. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
The gang were very confident in what they did. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Straightaway, they would engage the shopkeeper behind the counter. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
While the shop owner is distracted, one of them | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
sneaks into the flat above the shop. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
These aren't shoplifters - they're actually burglars. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
But luckily, the shop security camera captures the moment | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
she goes up to the flat. And when she comes out again a little later. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:46
We'll see shortly what happens next. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
But first, back to Cilfynydd, where Anoma | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
and her family have lived above their shop for 26 years. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
People are so nice in our neighbourhood. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
Sometimes I feel like I'm in one of those television dramas. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
They've got a shop and everyone comes and tells their stories | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
and that's what we are staying here for this long. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
But one quiet morning, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
the shop is the scene of events that really ARE a bit like a TV drama. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:17
Just reading my newspaper and then suddenly, two ladies came | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
and they said "Hello", and I said "Hello", | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
and then they said they were just going to move to my neighbourhood. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
But there's not much time for friendly chitchat, as things | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
get very busy. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
I can see more people coming and then there's more people | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
all together inside the shop, men and women, about eight of them. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:39
Everybody wants something now. "Excuse me! | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
"Can I have this, can I have that?" Or "I need help" or, you know, they don't really say that, they're | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
just like, doing sign language to call me here, call me there like that. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:50
It's all a bit much. But at least it should be a profitable day. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
They've all got a £20 note in their hand, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
so I thought, well, they've got money, they're not going to rob me. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
Don't worry, just carry on serving, and that's what I did. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
Ten minutes later, they've all gone. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
Anoma settles back into her usual routine | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
and then her family returns from school. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
When my children come home and suddenly she said, "Mummy! | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
"Somebody's gone into my room." | 0:04:14 | 0:04:15
I said, "Who's going to go to your room? Nobody is going to go into your room." | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
"No, somebody's been in my room," she keeps telling, | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
"and they just pulled everything" and I said, "Nobody is going to pull... | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
"It is the way you left your room," I said, "unless it's a ghost," I said. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:30
It's no ghost, but she does get another visitation. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
Two days later, the gang comes back again but this time, Anoma | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
spots something suspicious. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
Out of the corner of my eye, | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
I saw one lady is coming out of my private door | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
and then I was like, | 0:04:47 | 0:04:48
"Oh, my God, how can you go inside my private door without my permission?" | 0:04:48 | 0:04:54
And then all the other ladies gathered around me and said, "No, no, she's pregnant. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
"She is pregnant, she needs to go to the toilet." I said, | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
"Whether you need to go to the toilet or not, you should get my permission. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
"This is my private door, that is. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
"You can't just go in." And then only just clicked me, | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
and I just grabbed the phone and dialled 999. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
And they all just disappeared. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
Anoma rushes upstairs to check the room where her money is kept. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
Thankfully, the door to that room is still locked. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
If they'd got into my room, well, we haven't got anything left at all. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
We'll probably end up in the street. We haven't got no money to pay our bills or nothing. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:33
The police arrive quickly and scour the shop for fingerprints | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
and they also take away a copy of the CCTV footage. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
The case lands on the desk of Detective Sergeant Daniel Michel | 0:05:40 | 0:05:44
who's been dealing with similar reports across Pontypridd. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
We had six burglaries in quick succession, | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
primarily village shops owned by families who | 0:05:49 | 0:05:54
lived above the shop or in a flat adjacent to the shop. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
The victims didn't automatically know that they'd been burgled. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
It wasn't until they'd gone upstairs later on in the night, | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
then they discovered that some things had been moved around, | 0:06:02 | 0:06:06
and then they noticed there was stuff missing. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
Although her money was safe, the family | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
did lose some jewellery, including a diamond watch | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
she had given to her daughter on her 18th birthday. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
The robbers also left Anoma with a fear that she had never felt before. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:21
We are even scared to leave the shop and go anywhere now, | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
because those days we could just shut the shop, put the alarm and go, | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
but now we are really worried and concerned | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
whether these people are going to come any time again. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
These victims are key in our communities, | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
they provide a service to the rest of the communities living there, | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
in that they are their local village shop. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
So, for other people living around there that find out what's happened, | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
it causes a bit of fear and concern right throughout that community. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
Later, Daniel puts together a dedicated team | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
to sift through hours of CCTV footage. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
The cameras enabled us to see exactly what happened. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
This footage here was crucial to us. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
This gang is about to find out that there's no safety in numbers. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
They can be large gangs, they can be single operators - | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
distraction thieves use many different guises | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
and lots of different techniques to try and fool us - | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
so, what should we be looking out for? | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
If somebody, when you're out in public, bumps into you, | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
stops to ask for directions | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
or tries to sell anything to you, | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
just be very conscious of your valuables and protect them. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:35
Keep your wits about you. Make sure that if someone bumps into you in the street, | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
approaches you at a table, particularly if they've got a map, | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
newspaper, or something to cover the table, | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
that they're not stealing your phone, purse or wallet. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
Keep valuable items secure in your pocket or zipped up in a handbag. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
A classic trick is for somebody to place a map or magazine | 0:07:50 | 0:07:55
in front of you, and whilst they're | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
talking to you and shielding your eyes, | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
their hands will be in your bag. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:02
We're not asking people to be paranoid - | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
just be vigilant. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
Next, we meet a gang of thieves who set out to steal some watches. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
It turns out they certainly needed a bit more time... | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
to plan things better. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
We're in Maidstone, Kent, | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
and obscured from view behind this street sign | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
are two men dressed in white decorator's suits. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
But they're not here to paint the jewellery store - | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
they're here to rob it. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
They smash through the windows and are helping themselves | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
to 13 brand-new Rolex watches. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
But a sharp-eyed council CCTV camera operator | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
has them in her sights, and she's alerted the police. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
Although this heist may look like a professional job, | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
it's about to become decidedly...amateur. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
One of these bungling burglars is in such a rush, | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
he drops part of the loot. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
You'd think this gang would now | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
screech away from the scene of the crime - like in the movies! | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
But no - they drive off slowly, | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
stopping at the lights and helpfully | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
indicating which way they're going next. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
With the registration number recorded by the CCTV cameras, | 0:09:10 | 0:09:14
the police are soon ready to pounce. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
POLICE SIREN SOUNDS | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
The patrol car pulls up on the driver's side | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
and manages to detain two of the thieves. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
But the passenger makes a run for it. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:27
The chase is on. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
He may have lost his loot of watches, | 0:09:33 | 0:09:35
but this particular time bandit | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
looks set to clock up a personal best in cross-country running! | 0:09:37 | 0:09:41
That policeman's doing pretty well, too, | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
though he's not exactly dressed for speed. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:46
Further on, the robber has now lost his pursuer, | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
and tries to lose his distinctive uniform. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
He thinks he's got time to stop and undress, | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
and the last thing he wants is to be caught with his trousers down. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
But what he doesn't know is that the council CCTV operators | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
are STILL watching his every move, | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
and while he's performing his striptease, | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
the police are able to close in. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
In just four minutes after the robbery, | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
all three gang members are arrested. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
And they are jailed for a total of 16 years between them. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
So, they may not have got away with stealing the watches, | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
but those crooks will know about doing time, | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
thanks to some quick-thinking | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
CCTV operators and some well-placed cameras. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
You can run, but if you're on the wrong side of the law, | 0:10:35 | 0:10:37
sometimes, ya just can't hide! | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
Coming up on Caught Red Handed... | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
Here's some food for thought. Next time you order a pizza, | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
best check no-one's eaten it before you. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
And this man makes a meal of a jewellery heist - | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
literally. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:55
He swallows the evidence! | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
And in Wales, police close in on the gang terrorising shop owners. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
This footage here was crucial to us. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:06
This is Shotton Pond in County Durham - | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
a quiet little spot, popular with wildlife and fishermen alike. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
The lake is really well established. It is really, really pretty. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
We have wild otters, we have great crested newts, | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
salamanders, everything what you would wish in an area like this. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
It looks like the perfect place to | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
unwind and enjoy the wonders of nature. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
But these two visitors aren't here to enjoy the scenery. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
They're here to ruin it. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
I can't imagine why anyone would | 0:11:50 | 0:11:51
want to dump that waste in that location. It's beautiful. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
They are fly-tipping, with no regard for the law. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
It's a problem that is out of control, and is even threatening | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
to close down the local angling club. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
People will just see the general site, then they will turn round | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
and drive away, then I'll get a phone call saying, "Stevie, | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
"I'm afraid I'm going to drop out the angling club." | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
The council decide to take action. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
We had the camera in this particular location here... | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
One tiny camera will help bring this beautiful area | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
back to the people who appreciate it the most. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
Fisherman Stephen Maitland absolutely loves his home town. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
He's the chairman of the Shotton and District Angling Club. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
I've got a lot of passion for this area. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
I've been involved with the angling club since I was the age of 12. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
But for the last decade, | 0:12:43 | 0:12:45
it's not just been the fish that Stephen's been trying to catch. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:49
The fly-tipping began round about 13 years ago, | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
and we've had garden furniture, house furniture, sofas, | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
bedding etc, mattresses... | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
The blight on the area is so bad, Stephen believes it's the reason | 0:13:01 | 0:13:05
his beloved angling club is on the verge of closing down. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
Almost 80% of its members have drifted away over ten years. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:13
It just makes you feel depressed, and... | 0:13:13 | 0:13:16
wondering whether I need to chuck the towel in. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:20
And it's not just Shotton Pond. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
Fly-tipping is a problem throughout the county. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
In 2012, there were a staggering | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
5,904 incidents of fly-tipping reported across County Durham. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:32
45 minutes south of Shotton is the village of Headlam, | 0:13:35 | 0:13:39
home to farmer Simon Robinson and his wife Joanna. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
They, too, have been victims on a quite jaw-dropping scale. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:47
My husband first heard about the fly-tipping in the morning, | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
so we jumped in the pick-up and off we went down to the field - | 0:13:50 | 0:13:53
just couldn't believe it when we got there. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
It's a truly shocking sight - | 0:13:58 | 0:14:00
thousands of old VHS cassettes were strewn across their field. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:04
12,000-13,000 videos, er... | 0:14:04 | 0:14:08
videos of all description, from the Bond box set | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
to, er, exercise videos... | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
-SpongeBob SquarePants! -Yes, yes. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
The stretch of videos probably went for about...40ft. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:20
The vast expanse of VHSs had been | 0:14:20 | 0:14:22
unceremoniously dumped on Simon and Joanna's field overnight. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:26
Even their nephew's excitement | 0:14:26 | 0:14:28
at the unexpected booty was short-lived. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:30
He's used to DVDs, so didn't quite know what a video was. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:34
Nothing to play it on these days, so they were no use to anybody. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:37
The most frustrating thing is the fact that if they'd done it | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
on that side of the hedge, | 0:14:40 | 0:14:41
the council would have had to clean it up, | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
and on this side of the hedge, that means that I have to clean it up. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
Er, so, yes, it was definitely anger to start with... | 0:14:46 | 0:14:50
Unless the person actually gets caught | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
doing the fly-tipping, nothing can really be done. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:56
Which is why a little CCTV camera can be a powerful tool | 0:14:56 | 0:15:00
in the fight against this type of crime. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:03
Back at Shotton Pond, council worker Ian Hoult has taken it upon himself | 0:15:03 | 0:15:07
to put an end to fly-tipping. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
After listening to the pleas of the angling club, | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
his plan is to reel in the culprits. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
So, each individual site is assessed | 0:15:15 | 0:15:18
for where we're going to put, er, cameras. | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
Here at Shotton Pond, there is literally a single road in and out. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:25
But where do you plant the camera in such a huge area? | 0:15:25 | 0:15:29
Well, a bit like anglers do, | 0:15:29 | 0:15:31
Ian hunts about for a spot that gives him better odds | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
of landing a big catch. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
Here, the area opens up a bit, which gave them their opportunity | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
to turn around, and then they came back and parked up here, | 0:15:39 | 0:15:43
essentially to be able to throw off their waste. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
So, we had the camera in this particular location here, | 0:15:46 | 0:15:49
and they literally threw those... those flags straight at the camera. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:53
Ian really couldn't have picked a more perfect spot. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
A van pulls up. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
Two men get out to dispose of their unwanted load. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
The very first paving slab almost hits the camera | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
and it wobbles under the shock wave. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
Without any regard for their surroundings, | 0:16:16 | 0:16:19
they continue to chuck their rubbish out of the back. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
Anywhere will do. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:24
I can't imagine why anybody would want to do that in the first | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
instance. I certainly... It doesn't even cross my mind. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:31
As you can tell, it took no time at all to be able to dump that waste - | 0:16:31 | 0:16:34
and then they're off again. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
So, you know, I can't imagine why | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
anybody would want to dump that waste in that location. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
It's beautiful... | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
It's an ugly scene in a beautiful location - | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
but it's good news for Ian. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:47
Some of the footage that we used | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
was really useful, in terms of taking it to the police, | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
and through that, we were able to identify | 0:16:53 | 0:16:57
the individuals that were concerned. | 0:16:57 | 0:16:59
Thanks to the CCTV evidence, these two were fined a combined total | 0:17:04 | 0:17:08
of £635, and ordered to pay costs of a further £760. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:13
Ian gave angling club chairman Stephen Maitland | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
the news he had been hoping for. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
I got a knock on the door off the council, who had said, | 0:17:23 | 0:17:27
"We have caught two fly-tippers on camera." | 0:17:27 | 0:17:31
And I thought, that's really, really good news. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
From that point, I knew then I had something to work on... | 0:17:34 | 0:17:37
to get the momentum going, get the wheels in motion, | 0:17:37 | 0:17:41
to get further things done to stop any further damage, | 0:17:41 | 0:17:44
any further fly-tipping. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:46
And it was through the cameras - that actually was the turnaround | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
for our salvation of the angling club. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
And the clean-up continues throughout the county. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
On Simon and Joanna's farm, | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
the makeshift video library has been relocated. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
When the council came to clear it up, | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
they came in several vehicles, with the cages over the back, | 0:18:02 | 0:18:06
and they filled two or three of those, I think. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
A local rubbish collector admitted taking the videos | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
from a second-hand shop, but says | 0:18:12 | 0:18:14
he then passed them onto someone else to dispose of. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
He admitted breaching the Environment Protection Act, | 0:18:17 | 0:18:21
and magistrates fined him £143 and ordered him to pay £350 in costs. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:26
Joanna still can't believe the audacity of the fly-tippers. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:30
I wouldn't go to somebody's house | 0:18:30 | 0:18:31
and just dump a bag of rubbish in their front garden. Erm... | 0:18:31 | 0:18:35
And you know, it's just sickening. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
This is what Durham's about, it's beautiful. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:40
It's a beautiful location - and Durham's a beautiful place. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
With the county's fly-tipping problem on the wane, | 0:18:43 | 0:18:47
Stephen is angling for a better future for his fishing club. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:51
The council have installed a gate which only lets in its members. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:55
Ex-members or new members | 0:18:55 | 0:18:56
are now coming in in droves to rejoin the angling club. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
As we speak, I'm actually on 112 members, | 0:18:59 | 0:19:04
so I'm up 22 from this time last year, | 0:19:04 | 0:19:08
and members are still coming in, so it's looking good for the future. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
Nothing beats a good takeaway every now and again, | 0:19:15 | 0:19:18
and it's even better when you get it delivered right to your front door. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:21
Mind you, after watching this, you might want to pick it up yourself. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:26
The man entering this lift is delivering a pizza. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
He presses the button, and as soon as the door closes, | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
he unzips the bag and takes out the box. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
He then, lo and behold, | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
starts to tuck into the tasty toppings himself. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
Let's call him Peter Piper. Why? | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
Because he picks a peck of pepperoni evenly from each separate slice. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:54
With the lift fast approaching the right floor, | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
he closes the box and puts it back. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
Spare a thought at this point for the hungry person | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
waiting for their yummy fresh pizza to arrive. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:06
Little did they know. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:09
But they do now. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:10
News reports say the pizza company has fired the delivery man | 0:20:10 | 0:20:14
and introduced sealed boxes to stop any more pizza pilfering. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:18
In South Wales, we've seen how Detective Sergeant Daniel Michel | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
is hunting for a gang of robbers who are targeting local shops. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:36
They would turn up at a local village shop in a large group. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:40
They would all go into the shop, not all at the same time, | 0:20:40 | 0:20:42
but once they enter, straight away they would engage the shopkeeper | 0:20:42 | 0:20:46
behind the counter. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:47
They were just buying everything. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:49
Chocolate, wine, magazines, all the spicy things and everything. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:56
The shopkeeper's attention was distracted from the door to the flat. | 0:20:56 | 0:21:01
The group even uses a baby to help distract the shopkeeper. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
"Aww, look at the cute baby. It's lovely. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
"How old is the baby?" Meantime... | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
One member of the gang then would slip to the shopkeeper's flat and | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
would go through there looking for the items of highest value to steal. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:18
Then, as soon as that person comes back down to the shop, | 0:21:18 | 0:21:22
the gang leaves. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:23
Luckily, most of the shops have CCTV cameras in operation. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
There was a significant amount of CCTV to go through, | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
so a small team was brought together to investigate these crimes only. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
And then one particularly interesting piece of footage | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
comes in from a shop in Pontypridd. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
It shows the gang's real target is the shopkeeper's flat. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
This footage here was crucial to us. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
The placement of the CCTV cameras both outside the shop | 0:21:53 | 0:21:56
and inside enabled us to see exactly what happened. | 0:21:56 | 0:22:00
The gang arrive in dribs and drabs. First, two women enter the store. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:07
30 seconds later, three men. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:10
One of them has a very distinctive hairstyle. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:13
We've seen that before in the other lady's shop. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
Next, two more women arrive. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
The men distract the shopkeeper | 0:22:19 | 0:22:21
while the women mill about at the back of the shop. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
One of them makes sure the coast is clear. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
Her accomplice moves a card stand aside | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
and then quickly ducks through a doorway to the flat upstairs. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
A moment later, the owner's young daughter notices that the card stand | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
is out of place and she goes to move it back. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
The little girl now is being coaxed towards the front of the shop | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
by some of the gang members. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
She put the card stand back, so they're asking her, | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
"Can you come to the front with us?" | 0:22:54 | 0:22:55
What appears to be just an innocent conversation between this gang member | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
and the young girl is actually a very meticulous | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
and organised conversation | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
intending to keep her distracted and away from the back of the shop. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:09
Ten minutes after sneaking into the family's flat, | 0:23:09 | 0:23:12
the thief comes back out. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:13
Here now we see the gang member who's been in the flat | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
and has stolen the jewellery and the cash, | 0:23:16 | 0:23:18
she comes out from the flat door, | 0:23:18 | 0:23:20
sneaks around behind the card stand. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:23
She gets herself ready | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
and then she immediately leaves the shop | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
accompanied by a couple of other gang members, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
and here now we just see the last of the gang members | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
just politely thanking the shopkeepers for their help | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
and saying goodbye, and then they leave the shop. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
Daniel's team meticulously compares evidence | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
from a number of different shops. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:44
We could see who we believed were members of the gang | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
and what they were doing. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:49
But we didn't know who they were. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:50
Also as a result from the CCTV outside the shops, | 0:23:50 | 0:23:54
we could see vehicles which we believe the gang were using. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:58
The vehicles are traced to an area near Birmingham | 0:23:58 | 0:24:00
and ten people are arrested. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
They were brought back down to the South Wales area. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
Our investigation kicked on then, | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
and by actually having those people under arrest | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
we could see what they looked like and pick them out from the CCTV | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
in the number of shops where they played their role. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:15
Eight members of the gang are found guilty | 0:24:18 | 0:24:20
of conspiracy to commit burglary | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
and sentenced to a total of 24 years between them. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:26
During their five-month shopping spree | 0:24:28 | 0:24:30
they managed to steal £41,000 in cash | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
and £128,000 worth of jewellery. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:37
The gang hit victims also in the Somerset | 0:24:37 | 0:24:41
and Midlands areas, but as far north as well as Cheshire, | 0:24:41 | 0:24:45
Yorkshire and Manchester. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
The convictions are a relief for many shopkeepers around the country. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:52
The police phoned and said, "We got them." | 0:24:52 | 0:24:55
So I was like, "Wow, that's good." We are really happy that... | 0:24:55 | 0:24:58
I hope they're not going to go on doing to other people like us, | 0:24:58 | 0:25:01
you know. We are working hard to, you know, make our living | 0:25:01 | 0:25:05
and then somebody just comes overnight and robbed the whole thing | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
one day. So that's not nice, is it? | 0:25:08 | 0:25:12
Daniel's also delighted that the work of his team has put such | 0:25:12 | 0:25:15
a large gang behind bars. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:18
I think that's a very good result. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
Firstly it's a good result for our victims. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
They see that the people who've stolen from them are punished | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
by the law. Also I feel it's a very good result | 0:25:25 | 0:25:28
in that the message it sends out to anybody else considering | 0:25:28 | 0:25:30
this type of crime, it'll prevent them from doing it | 0:25:30 | 0:25:33
cos they'll have something to think about. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:35
The police really value CCTV footage | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45
which shows offences being committed. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
All we would ask, is make sure that the quality of the picture | 0:25:47 | 0:25:50
it captures is really good. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:53
The better quality the evidence, | 0:25:53 | 0:25:54
the more likely we are to identify the suspect. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:57
While we've seen how some criminals operate in highly-organised gangs, | 0:26:02 | 0:26:06
others set off to steal with next to no preparation | 0:26:06 | 0:26:09
and precious little intelligence. | 0:26:09 | 0:26:11
This is a large city centre jewellery store. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:14
All is quiet inside. The CCTV camera outside shows a man approaching. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:20
He heads to the shop security door and waits to be buzzed in. | 0:26:20 | 0:26:24
Once the door is open, he strolls towards a counter | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
and asks for assistance. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
He says he's after an engagement ring, and the assistant | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
takes him over to have a look at the selection of sparklers. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
He appears to take a particular fancy to a white gold ring | 0:26:37 | 0:26:40
worth £2,000. Hmm, very bling. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
He decides he simply has to have it, | 0:26:46 | 0:26:48
but he's not planning on paying for it. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:51
But this dim-witted thief has forgotten an important detail. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:56
Because he was buzzed into the shop, he also needs to be buzzed out. | 0:26:56 | 0:27:00
He's trapped. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:02
But this rough diamond isn't the sort to give himself up. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:06
He has a cunning plan. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
He raises his hand, puts the ring in his mouth and swallows. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:12
Unbelievably, under the watchful eye of 16 surveillance cameras, | 0:27:14 | 0:27:18
he's now denying all knowledge of the ring. | 0:27:18 | 0:27:21
The police arrive, but this thief clearly thinks he's a cut above | 0:27:23 | 0:27:27
the rest and doesn't even seem bothered. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:29
All the while he's still digesting his impromptu | 0:27:29 | 0:27:33
