There are 700,000 burglaries | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
in the UK every year. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
But right across the country, dedicated police teams | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
are on the offensive, waging war against the criminals | 0:00:24 | 0:00:28
who steal from local homeowners. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
Police! Open the door, otherwise, entry's going to have to be forced. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
For the victims of these crimes, it can take months, even years, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
to come to terms with what's happened. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
I feel absolutely sick that they think they've got the right | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
to be able to do what they've done. I really do. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
But in this series, we're about to show them, and you, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
how we can all beat the burglars. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
This is Crime Scene Rescue. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
On today's show, we meet Harry and Linda, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
a remarkable couple who have had a run of bad luck. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
Now what should have been a day of happiness | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
has turned into another day of despair. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
So today, you actually went to see your grandchild for the first time. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
-Born today. -Yeah. -And this is what you come back to. -Yeah. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
What's worse, the thieves have stolen treasured possessions | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
belonging to Linda's mum. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
-You just think they're... -Gone. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
She does. I mean, she'd had it years and years and years. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
And while the police try and catch the criminals, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
we take on the challenge of transforming their home, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
in the hope that we can put the happiness back into their lives. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
-We couldn't think what you'd do that'd make it... -Oh, it's... | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
-But it's incredible, isn't it? -Absolutely brilliant. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
'West Yorkshire Police. How can I help?' | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
It's 10:30pm, on a cold night in Leeds, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
and a burglary is being called in. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
'How have they got inside your house?' | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
According to recent figures, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
there have been over 14,000 domestic burglaries | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
in West Yorkshire, but the police here | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
are doing everything in their power to tackle the criminals. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
'Have you just got home?' | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
'Oh, what a shame!' | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Just outside the city centre, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
I've arrived at the home of Harry and Linda, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
with officers from West Yorkshire Police. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
Just very briefly, what's happened? | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
Obviously, they've rifled through your drawers and some cupboards. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
They've just ransacked all the cupboards and the drawers. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
We just had another grandchild born... | 0:02:40 | 0:02:41
-We've just had a grandchild... -Today? Congratulations. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
And then you get back to this. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
So you actually went to see your grandchild for the first time... | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
-Yeah. -Born today. -Yeah. -And this is what you come back to. -Yeah. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
-And she were born at ten... ten past two this afternoon. -Yeah. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:55
And, of course, we went there. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
A lovely, beautiful new baby. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
-We come in and... -Came back to this. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
-I said, "What's...doors open for?" -Oh, dear. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
I looked and I said, "Oh, God, somebody's been in!" | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
I don't know. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
Linda, what's happened to your foot? | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
I've broken a metatarsal bone. This was the start of it. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:20
It's been absolutely horrendous. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
Three weeks before Christmas, I did this. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
-My son, he's lost... -Taken his finger off. -..half his finger. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
-And crushed his foot. -And all his foot's all crushed. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
The week after, my husband crossed over the road | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
and got run over - knocked down. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
What else could happen? | 0:03:38 | 0:03:39
Oh, dear! You've really been through it, haven't you, you two? | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
'Talk about unlucky, and then this happens. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
'Harry's laptop, and treasured jewellery | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
'passed on from Linda's late mum have all gone. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:50
'While I'm taking this in, PC Thomas Powell is upstairs, | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
'hunting for clues.' | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
The glass top is ideal | 0:03:57 | 0:03:58
and the mirrored wardrobes have obviously been...been moved. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:03
Hopefully, touch wood, there'll be some fingerprints, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
but unlikely, from what I can see. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
I can see a couple of glove marks, so... | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
But they've come in here and had | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
a right good root around, unfortunately, | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
which is the worst part of it, really, especially for the victims | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
when they come home, especially after a day like today. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
To come home to this | 0:04:20 | 0:04:21
is not going be a happy ending for them, unfortunately. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
'It's certainly been an emotional day for Harry and Linda, | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
'but PC Richard Crossland is doing his best | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
'to help them keep their spirits up.' | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
It can be traumatic, but try and focus on that little one. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
You know what I mean? Because that's the main thing at the moment. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
'It's hard to comprehend | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
'the terrible time this couple are having, | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
'but I want to let them know I'm here to help.' | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
First of all, I'm sorry that we've had to meet in these circumstances, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:50
with such a horrible thing that's happened to you, | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
but are you all right to tell me - what's actually happened today? | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
They've obviously got in through the stable door we've got at the back. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
The top one hasn't got a lock on it, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
there should be screws running through. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
-Sort of prised it open? -Prised it open, and then they... | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
Got the latch up and got in through that. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
It's an awful thing to come in and, you know, | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
-somebody's been in your house. -How would you feel about us | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
assessing your home, with the aid of the police, | 0:05:16 | 0:05:18
and if they find any weak spots | 0:05:18 | 0:05:19
like that back door, which doesn't have adequate security at the moment, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
-that we put that on for you? -Fine. -That's brilliant. Yeah. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
-Anything that helps will be more than welcome. -Yes. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
-OK. I think that's what we're going to do. -Good. -Oh, that's lovely. Thank you. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
On first impressions, the burglars have made a real mess of this home. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
But I'm sure there's plenty of things I can do | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
to help make them feel safe and secure again. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
While the police continue their investigation, | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
I want to see if I can reverse Harry and Linda's recent run of bad luck. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
Time to hit the phones and assemble an army of volunteers | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
to help turn their fortunes around. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
Is that Paul? | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
Hi, is that Steve? | 0:06:01 | 0:06:02
Dave, it's Rav. How are you doing? | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
Laura, hi, it's Rav. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
We've got a couple, Harry and Linda, that've been burgled recently | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
and it's really, really upset them, as you can imagine. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
The door itself's fine, but the locks are really, really poor. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
They're a lovely couple, Harry and Linda, | 0:06:17 | 0:06:19
they've really been through some absolutely shockingly bad luck recently. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:23
I want to do the inside of their home, so it actually... | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
it feels like home again for them, because at the moment, they can't relax. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
We don't have much time on this, unfortunately. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
Thanks for your help, Paul... | 0:06:31 | 0:06:32
Cheers, then. Bye. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
My team of local heroes is taking shape, | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
and I know with their help, we can really make a difference. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
It's the morning rush hour in Leeds | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
and things have been equally as hectic at Harry and Linda's. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
Last night, the police continued to focus on solving this crime, | 0:06:49 | 0:06:53
carrying out a full forensic assessment. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
For me, my first challenge is to make this home | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
as safe as it can possibly be, and there's no better place to start | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
than with a review of their security. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
I've drafted in crime-prevention expert PC Paul Croft. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:10
Thanks for coming. You've had a look at this property and we need to up this security, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
I think, by quite a bit. I notice they have got a light, I'm not sure it's working. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
I believe it's not working. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
So if you've got something installed, it's been put there for a reason. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
We need to either look to replace that, or certainly repair it, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
so that it does the job that it's been designed for. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
That would light up this area, no-one's going to sneak around, | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
so we need that to be working. Anything else at the front? | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
If you look at the houses across opposite, they've got alarm boxes. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:40
This particular one hasn't, which, again, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
is saying, you know, to us, it hasn't got an alarm on it. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
That's something we could look at. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:46
There is a garage here | 0:07:46 | 0:07:47
and although it doesn't link directly into the house, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
it's still generally quite a vulnerable place. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
Is there anything you can think we could do there? | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
If we're installing an alarm on the property, perhaps we could | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
put the alarm onto the garage door, as well as part of the alarm system. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
Yeah. Nice and easy. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
So just an extra sensor, perhaps, on the door, so if that's moved, | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
-it would set the system off. -I'd say so, yes. -OK. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
Let's have a look at the side and the back of the house, | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
see if there's anything there. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:12
This is where the thieves broke in | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
and, to my mind, it's the most vulnerable part of this home. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
So we see round the rear of the property now, | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
this conservatory, a possible area of weakness. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:22
Just looking at it, it's a massive concern. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
That's just coming away, isn't it? | 0:08:25 | 0:08:26
If you gave that a really good tug, | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
that's going to open, isn't it? | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
Yeah, very vulnerable. Something definitely needs doing about that. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
But the biggest concern is the backdoor. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
We've got a slight mark in here, where it appears | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
that the offenders have simply put something in, | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
and if I give it a push... | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
-There we go. -Now, that door was locked. -Yeah. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
-We haven't just left that open there, have we? -No. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
That door was locked, and by you just pushing in the right place, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
you've just popped that door right open. | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
So that seriously needs addressing, and fast. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
A massive area of concern, yes. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
From my chat with Paul, there's certainly plenty to do | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
if we are going to improve the security here. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
There's no time to waste in getting this transformation started. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
So it's great my team of helpers have arrived | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
to get things moving at Harry and Linda's. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
We're installing a brand new alarm and upgrading the lighting, | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
but it's the back of the property that is particularly vulnerable, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
so it's vital we make this a priority | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
to stop the burglars coming back. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:29
Locksmith Steve is on the case. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
This particular window... | 0:09:31 | 0:09:33
..the catches it has on aren't very strong. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
So we're putting additional window locks on, | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
making the window a lot more secure. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
My mission is not just about security, | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
I want to make this house feel like a home again, | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
and for that, I've called in designers Kate and Laura. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:53
This is the scene of where the burglary took place, | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
so we want to give it back to them as a nice place they can relax | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
and put the memory of the burglary behind them. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
Is this something you think you might be able to transform and help us out with? | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
Yeah, absolutely. I think they've had a bit of a rough time, | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
so it would be really nice to give the room a bit of a revamp for them. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
Something soft and neutral, just a nice, family, relaxing space. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
They are so close to their family because they were actually | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
visiting a brand new grandchild when this burglary took place. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
So if you can incorporate the family element into this, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
I think they'd really appreciate it. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
Maybe looking at, they've got a lot of family photos around, | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
so maybe look at creating a bit of an area | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
to show those off to best effect as well. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
I think remove the arches and put some new paper on there | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
that's going to make a great feature. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
A lot to be done and we don't, unfortunately, have too much time. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
So it's going to be tough. But you reckon you can do it? | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
-Absolutely, yeah. -Definitely. -We're up for the challenge. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:48
Well, the designers are confident and the tradesmen are cracking on. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
But for Harry and Linda, the impact of the burglary | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
is really starting to hit home. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:58
I think, actually, it hit me mostly when I went to bed. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:02
It were just a matter of climbing over all the clothes | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
-and then you're thinking... -Constant reminders what they've done. -Yeah. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
And, you know, you sort of... | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
I got into bed and I'm thinking, "My God," you know, | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
"they were there not long since." | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
Recently, her mum died and we've added the wedding ring to... | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
-Yeah. I got a wedding ring. -That's what started you. -Yeah. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:25
Sorry... | 0:11:25 | 0:11:26
I hadn't thought about it, you know. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
But, you know, I hadn't thought about it in... | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
-You just think... -Gone. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
I mean, she'd had it years and years and years. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:45
50 years, hadn't she? And more. 60 years. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
It really unnerves you. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
It does, a little bit, yeah. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
They say... You know, I've heard people say that, you know, | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
they've been burgled and you think, it's awful, is that. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
But it's... You don't realise how bad it is. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
No. Until it happens, no. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:03
Now I think, my God, why didn't we do this, why didn't we do that? | 0:12:03 | 0:12:08
Just simple things which can stop it as well, you know. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
But you just, you just put things off, don't you? | 0:12:12 | 0:12:14
Well, we're putting things off no longer | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
and work is well under way to make this home more secure. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
But we're not the only ones who've made progress. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
The police have a promising lead. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
We've discovered further evidence at the scene | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
and that's in the form of some gloves that have been left | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
near to the scene of the burglary. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:35
Those gloves have been seized by police officers | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
and have been packaged and are now at our forensic laboratory, | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
where the scientists are trying to recover DNA from those gloves | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
that can then be profiled and go onto the computer | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
and, hopefully, bring a match up from those. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:48
So the investigation is moving forwards. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
As night falls over the city, | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
the police have returned to Harry and Linda's neighbourhood | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
to look for additional leads | 0:12:56 | 0:12:57
and offer support to the local community. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
If you can go round the neighbourhood, please. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
I've given you all your house numbers already. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
Do some house-to-house and see if we've got any witnesses to this offence, | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
and do home security assessments, where required. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
The operation is being led by Sergeant Sue Needham, | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
who's also paying Linda a visit. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
My visit now is to see the victim, | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
bearing in mind the burglary happened last night, | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
just to offer her some reassurance and crime-prevention advice. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
Sometimes, when you've been burgled, you can't remember everything that's been stolen, | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
so there may be other things that have come to light today. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:33
-So, I'm aware that a laptop was taken, and some jewellery. -Yeah. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:38
And I've just... I had some pictures of my jewellery, | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
and a lot of it was my mum's. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
I knew there was three rings | 0:13:45 | 0:13:49
and I'd forgotten until I saw this picture, | 0:13:49 | 0:13:51
-but her wedding ring as well's gone. -Oh, dear. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:55
At the moment, as we speak, we've got the Police Community Support Officers | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
going round all your street now, all the houses that back onto here, | 0:13:59 | 0:14:03
doing house-to-house. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:05
It's called Operation Optimal. We've been doing this | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
for about a year now and it has reduced the burglaries by about 50%. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:12
-So it is working. -Yeah. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:14
-If we arrest anybody, obviously, we'll let you know. -Yes. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:17
And from the house-to-house that we're doing now, | 0:14:17 | 0:14:20
if anything comes back from that, I'll let you know about that as well. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:23
Yeah. Oh, right, love. Thank you. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:24
It's early morning. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:32
Harry and Linda are leaving home, as things are shifting up a gear. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:36
-Bye! -See you guys later. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
I've called in my band of Good Samaritans to help put | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
a little happiness back in their lives. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
OK, folks. Thanks for rushing down at such short notice. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:52
We're all here to help the people living in this house - Linda and Harry. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
They have had the worst luck imaginable recently, | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
and that's where you lot come in. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:00
What I want to do, with your help, is to fix up this house. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:03
Let's make it as safe and secure as we possible can. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
So what we do have is a really deserving couple. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
What we don't have, unfortunately, is a lot of time. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:13
So let's get in there, get cracking, and get this place fixed up. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:16
ALL: Yeah! | 0:15:16 | 0:15:17
To complete my mission, we need to finish tightening up the security | 0:15:19 | 0:15:23
with the alarm, lights and locks. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:25
And I really want to put a smile back on Harry and Linda's faces | 0:15:25 | 0:15:29
with a transformation of their ransacked living room. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:32
The first things to disappear are Harry's DIY purple arches. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:36
-Are you ready to have the panelling taken off yet? -Yes, please. Take it down. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:40
The ceiling's next, then paper the walls tomorrow morning. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:50
I think we should make our target. It's a bit tight, but we should do it. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
And, at last, that vulnerable back door is being dealt with. | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
This is perfect because if your house has poor security, | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
you are six times more likely to get burgled | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
than a home with even basic protection. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
Back in the living room, the designers also have plenty of ideas. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
The new light fittings have gone up, the old ones are out. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
So we've got lots of nice, bright light in here, | 0:16:16 | 0:16:18
which will really lift the space. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:20
We've got the furniture, new furniture arriving, | 0:16:20 | 0:16:23
all the accessories are coming in. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:25
So once all the painting is done, | 0:16:25 | 0:16:27
we can start cracking on with all of that as well. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:30
The much-needed security update is really coming on, | 0:16:30 | 0:16:34
and I'm so pleased with what locksmith Steve has done | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
to protect the back door. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
This is where they broke in. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:40
It had absolute minimal security. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
-In fact, it had none on the top part of this door. -Absolutely. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
You've changed that in a few simple steps. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
We've put what's called | 0:16:48 | 0:16:49
a British Standard lock on this door, a deadlock, | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
and it throws this extended bolt out, | 0:16:52 | 0:16:54
and we've added another bolt here. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
-So if... -So, now it's like one door. | 0:16:56 | 0:16:58
So you can have it like that, | 0:16:58 | 0:16:59
or you can create just the one door | 0:16:59 | 0:17:01
by putting that down and closing it. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
You've instantly improved the security. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
So where it had just a latch before, | 0:17:07 | 0:17:09
we've now got one, two, three points of security on the top door... | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
-Absolutely. Yes. -..as well as the bottom lock. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
-That is much, much better than it was. -Absolutely, yeah. -Excellent. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
As well as the local tradesmen and women, family friend Jean, | 0:17:18 | 0:17:22
and Harry and Linda's daughter, Nicola, are also pitching in. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:26
Their new granddaughter is too small to be here, | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
but there's a team of other little helpers. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:33
How important will it be for them to have this room back again | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
-and feel like home? -Oh, really important. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:38
-They're here all the time. -Absolutely. -Kids running round, | 0:17:38 | 0:17:41
and it'll be fantastic. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:42
You think this will be one little nice thing that's happened recently? | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
-And they really, really do deserve it. -A lovely couple, aren't they? | 0:17:46 | 0:17:50
But one of our little volunteers has her own design ideas. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
-Try and make it smoother. -Yes. I might help Tara out a bit. | 0:17:54 | 0:18:00
-Tara. -There's quite a bit on the floor there, Tara. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
Quite a lot. And now on my arm. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
'What a mess! This could take some time.' | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
Look at your shoe! | 0:18:09 | 0:18:10
What a transformation! | 0:18:16 | 0:18:17
The security fix is almost complete | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
and the inside's coming along nicely. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
But as you can see, still loads of work still needs to be done, | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
so those painters are going to be here well into the night. | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
Hopefully, it will all be done before Harry and Linda get home tomorrow. | 0:18:27 | 0:18:31
It's 8am, and as Leeds wakes up, the police have made a breakthrough. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:40
Their work has led to them arresting someone | 0:18:40 | 0:18:42
in connection with the burglary. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
A suspect was identified for these offences | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
and the suspect was arrested. He is now | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
on police bail, pending the outcome of the forensic results | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
on the gloves that were recovered near to the scene. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
But as soon as we have that DNA profile recovered, | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
that will be put against him, as a suspect, | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
to see if we can find a match with it. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:03
If that's the case, then he will be rearrested | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
and brought in for further interviewing. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
So the DNA could be all important in solving this case. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:11
At the house, our team of helpers got up early to get the job finished. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:17
They've only got a few hours until Harry and Linda return home. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
The lights are going up, the alarm is being wired in, | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
and the living room is coming on. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:28
Full wall in half an hour. I'm happy with that. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
The wallpaper's also up, | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
so now Liam can put the finishing touches to the alarm. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
This alarm is a unique piece of kit which will call | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
your friends or family if there's a break-in. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:44
We've gone for a wireless system in this house. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:46
We've tried to keep it really simple for the couple. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:50
It literally sets and un-sets, like a car alarm would. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:54
Basically, we've got two buttons on here. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
We've got a set button and an unset button. | 0:19:57 | 0:20:01
We've also got the option of a panic system. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:03
So by pressing the two buttons together, | 0:20:03 | 0:20:06
we can send a panic signal through. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:08
When it is triggered, | 0:20:08 | 0:20:09
the alarm system will dial three pre-set numbers. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
So if the alarm is activated, | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
three numbers that Harry and Linda can choose | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
-will be alerted that the alarm has gone off. -Yes. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
-Like family members or friends. -Yeah, definitely. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
So, I'm in bed, I hear a noise downstairs, | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
I think there's an intruder there, I press these two buttons. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
HIGH-PITCHED ALARM WAILS The alarm system goes off. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:29
The alarm system works. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
We can silence that alarm by just pressing the unset button. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:36
That's now gone off. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:37
And in a couple of seconds, we should get a phone... | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
And it says here, "Intruder Alarm". | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
What a brilliant system! | 0:20:43 | 0:20:45
And it's nice and simple to use, and the best thing is, | 0:20:45 | 0:20:48
it's not going to cost them any money every month, is it? | 0:20:48 | 0:20:50
That call's come off their phoneline. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
It's literally a five-pence call from a standard landline. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:56
Excellent. | 0:20:57 | 0:20:58
We're into the final countdown, and inside, it's a hive of activity. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:02
The floor's going back down. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
Pete's just building a table for the girls. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
A couple of curtain pulls to put up, pictures, and then that's us. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
That's it. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:17
You'd never know now. Don't tell anybody. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:23
Job done, and just in the nick of time. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:28
But my main concern has always been | 0:21:28 | 0:21:29
the security of Harry and Linda's home. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:31
We've installed a state-of-the-art burglar alarm, | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
put up dusk-till-dawn lighting, | 0:21:34 | 0:21:36
and added locks to the vulnerable windows. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
PC Paul Croft is back to take a look and he seems particularly impressed | 0:21:40 | 0:21:44
by the changes at the rear of the house. | 0:21:44 | 0:21:47
This is the back door, which was the area | 0:21:47 | 0:21:49
that the intruders forced their way in through. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:51
At the time of the burglary, there was literally | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
no security on the top part of this door whatsoever, as you identified. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:58
-That's right, yes. -We've put in this five-lever lock here, | 0:21:58 | 0:22:02
a British Standard lock. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:03
Is this an improvement on what you saw before? | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
It is a vast improvement, as you've said. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:08
If you remember, we pushed it and it just simply fell open. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
As you can see there, you know, it's nice and solid now. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
So what we've done to that is absolutely excellent. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
They're not the most secure doors anyway, the stable door, | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
so that's always something to bear in mind if you're putting a door in. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:22
People like them, but security-wise, they're at the lower end of the scale | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
and quite difficult to secure. You must bear things like that in mind. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:30
But as long as it's a significant improvement on what we had before, | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
then that's going to be good for Linda and Harry. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:35
-We've certainly achieved that, yes. -Excellent. I think they're nearly here, so let's go and see them. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:40
Harry and Linda are home, | 0:22:45 | 0:22:47
but what are they going to make of all our hard work? | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
-Come on up, Harry, how are you doing? -Very well, sir. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
-You're all right? -A little apprehensive. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
Apprehensive. Linda, how are you doing? | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
-Hiya. I'm fine. -Are you all right? -Yes. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:58
-Good to see you. How's your leg? -Er, it's there! | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
-All right? Well, we've made a few changes on your house. -Right. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:05
Let's start with the front. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:07
You can see in the corner there, | 0:23:07 | 0:23:10
you've got a brand-new intruder alarm. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12
In darkness, you can see it flashing away, | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
so it's going to alert anyone to know that this house is secure. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
Harry, we've also put in a sensor in your garage there, | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
so all your stuff inside's also protected by the alarm. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:24
Obviously, that's going to set the alarm off. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:26
A nice new light as well. Look at that light there. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
It's what we call a dusk-until-dawn-style light, | 0:23:29 | 0:23:31
so it's going to give a nice gentle light round here, | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
so no-one can hide around, sneak and get up to no good in the darkness. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:37
-That's good. -All right? If we go round the back of the house, | 0:23:37 | 0:23:39
there's a few changes we've made there too. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:41
Here's the back door, obviously, that was attacked. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
-You can see here, we've put... -You've put another lock on there. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:50
There's a much, much stronger lock on here | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
and we've also put a little adjoining part on here, | 0:23:53 | 0:23:55
-so you can actually open it as one door now, if you want. OK? -Yeah. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:59
We've also, just so you know, put some window locks on your conservatory, | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
because you had a couple of windows that looked like they'd had a bit of play. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
I think they'd tried to get in there. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
It looks like they have, so we've put some window locks on, | 0:24:07 | 0:24:09
so there's no movement in there. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:11
-Good. Yeah. -That's brilliant, yes. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
-So that's the outside. -It's getting better and better. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
-Oh, no. -Do you want to have a look on the inside? -Oh, yes! | 0:24:16 | 0:24:20
This couple's home was completely ransacked by the burglars, | 0:24:21 | 0:24:25
who heartlessly stole some of their most precious possessions. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:28
But I'm hoping all our efforts will help put some joy | 0:24:28 | 0:24:31
back into their lives. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:33
We've done the outside for security, | 0:24:34 | 0:24:35
but as a little extra, we wanted to give you your home back. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:39
-Oh! Look at this. -And we want to give you somewhere where you can relax | 0:24:39 | 0:24:42
-and try and ignore what happened. -Oh! | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
Here you are, Harry, come in. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:47
-Because we know how much it upset you. -Oh, I can't believe it. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:51
We wanted to try and get... | 0:24:51 | 0:24:53
-That wall! -..the memories of the burglary out as much as possible | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
and try and put some nice memories back in, so you can enjoy this. | 0:24:55 | 0:24:59
You've certainly done that, my friend, you've certainly done that. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:01
We couldn't think what you'd do that'd make it... | 0:25:01 | 0:25:04
-But it's incredible, isn't it? -Absolutely brilliant. I just... | 0:25:04 | 0:25:08
You've never seen me lost for words, have you? | 0:25:09 | 0:25:13
I'm stuck for words, I'm absolutely stuck for words. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
-It's incredible, isn't it? -Absolutely fabulous. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:19
Oh, I can't believe it. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:24
You've got your new table and chairs over there. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:26
Oh! Oh, yeah. Look. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
Have a look on the wall over there at some pictures as well. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
-Oh, they're lovely. Oh, it's absolutely... -Isn't it? | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
I just can't... It's so nice. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
You guys have had the most rotten luck, to say the least. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:41
This has gone a long way to putting it right, hasn't it, pet? | 0:25:41 | 0:25:44
-Oh, it has. -A long way. -It really has, it's so nice. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:47
-But the arches have gone, Harry. -I know, yes. -Yay! | 0:25:47 | 0:25:50
The arches have gone. Is that all right? | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
You thought you'd miss the arches? | 0:25:52 | 0:25:53
I don't miss them at all. That's far better. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
It looks absolutely incredible, it does. | 0:25:56 | 0:25:58
Well, none of this would have been possible | 0:25:58 | 0:26:01
without the help of your friend Jean, your family, | 0:26:01 | 0:26:05
and also, loads of local tradesmen and women | 0:26:05 | 0:26:07
that have dropped everything, after they heard | 0:26:07 | 0:26:09
what happened, and I got on the phone | 0:26:09 | 0:26:11
and told them and they came straight round and made this possible. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
Many of them have worked well into the night to do this. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
I'm sure they would love to say hello to you | 0:26:17 | 0:26:22
and I'm sure that you'd like to say a big hello to them. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
-They're actually outside. -We'd like to say thank you to them. -We would. | 0:26:25 | 0:26:28
I'm so glad they love it. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:30
After all their terrible misfortune, | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
it's great to see the smiles back on their faces. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
Harry and Linda, meet the team. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:38
It is so nice, it's absolutely brilliant. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
It's incredible, girls, thank you, guys. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
All of you. I don't even know you, but... | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
It has been... It's absolutely beautiful. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:49
They look overwhelmed by the generosity of my team, | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
but there's one change that's caught Linda's eye - | 0:26:52 | 0:26:55
Harry's purple arches have gone. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
Was it terrible to get them off, then? | 0:26:57 | 0:26:59
He did a good job putting them on, I'll give him that! | 0:26:59 | 0:27:03
That is such a good feeling, when you take something so negative | 0:27:06 | 0:27:09
and you can turn it into something so positive. | 0:27:09 | 0:27:11
All these tradesmen and women and family members and friends | 0:27:11 | 0:27:15
rushing round together to make this the start of, hopefully, | 0:27:15 | 0:27:18
much happier times for Harry and Linda. | 0:27:18 | 0:27:21
-It is so nice. -Yeah. -Yes, so, thank you. -You deserve it. | 0:27:22 | 0:27:27
Time for the real test. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:29
What do their family think of the changes we've made to their new front room? | 0:27:29 | 0:27:33
I think it's absolutely fabulous. Beautiful. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:35
-It's very different, isn't it? -Absolutely lovely. So light. | 0:27:35 | 0:27:39
-I think it'll feel more like home again, won't it? -Yeah, yeah. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
One less thing for them to worry about, isn't it? | 0:27:42 | 0:27:44
More like their own space again, yeah. | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
After the burglary, definitely. Yeah, it's beautiful. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:50
What a result! | 0:27:50 | 0:27:52
The police are still working on this crime, but they also have | 0:27:52 | 0:27:55
a very clear message for any would-be burglars out there. | 0:27:55 | 0:27:59
What you have here is a family that have been devastated by a burglary, | 0:27:59 | 0:28:02
because burglary devastates people's lives. | 0:28:02 | 0:28:05
You've got local tradesmen who've come in to help put things right | 0:28:05 | 0:28:08
for these people and restore their faith in the local community. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
Our message to the burglars is quite clear - | 0:28:11 | 0:28:13
if you're going to mess with people's lives, | 0:28:13 | 0:28:15
then we're going to mess with you. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:17
We're going to come knocking on your door, morning, noon, and night, | 0:28:17 | 0:28:20
because that's what we're there for. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:22
