SIREN WAILS | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
There are 700,000 burglaries in the UK every year. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:07
But right across the country dedicated police teams | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
are on the offensive, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
waging war against the criminals who steal from local homeowners. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
Police! Come and open the door, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
otherwise entry's going to have to be forced. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
For the victims of these crimes it can take months, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
even years to come to terms with what's happened. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
I just feel like... Oh! I feel angry. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
That's the... You know, at the moment, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
anger is what's coming across. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
But in this series, we're about to show them and you | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
how we can all beat the burglars. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
This is Crime Scene Rescue. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
On today's show we meet Wendy, Stuart and their daughters. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
A united family brought even closer by a burglary. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
Yeah, family means everything to me. They come first. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
After a day out, they returned home | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
to find their house had been ransacked by thieves. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
They'd emptied my jewellery box, everything was gone. Everything. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
My mum's jewellery. My mum died three years ago. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
But as the police hunt for the criminals, it's our mission | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
to create a brand new safe haven for this hard working family. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
-Oh, my! -I can't believe it! | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
-It's unbelievable. -I can't believe this is my bedroom. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
West Yorkshire Police is the fourth largest force in the country, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
covering an area of around 780 square miles. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
It's 8pm and a break-in is being reported on the outskirts of Leeds. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:04
Myself and PC Rob Quinn are first on the scene. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
Wendy, just tell me what's happened from your side. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
We all left the house this morning at about half past eight | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
and we haven't returned until probably 7 o'clock. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
I noticed there was a light on upstairs and said to one of my daughters, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
"Who's left the light on all day?!" Flipping electric bill and everything. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
Gone upstairs. "Somebody's been through your drawers, Alicia." So we blamed the other daughter. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
And then when I walked in my bedroom I could see all my drawers were open, the wardrobe, everything. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:46
So I just said, "How the heck have they got in?" | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
So my husband came running downstairs and could see the back door. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
-Through there? -Yes. -Would you mind if I had a look? -No problem. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
-Can you just show me where they've got in? -Yeah. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
I just put this pole up against something and jam it in there. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
It's just a little bit more... security. It's nothing, you know. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
We need a little bit more than that, Wendy. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
We need a little bit more security around this house. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
Anyway, so we've opened this door... to see. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
Oh, here we go. Yeah. Yeah. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
-It looks like they've gone straight upstairs. -OK. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
And they've emptied my jewellery box, everything is gone. Everything. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:24
My mum's jewellery. My mum died three years ago. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
-So, that's all gone. -Yeah. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
My husband's treasurer of a football team and they've taken that money. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:34
-Are you all right just to show me where they've been? -Yes. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
You just go and show me. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
-It wasn't until I looked... in my room. -Oh, wow! | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
-They've obviously gone through all your personal items. -Yeah. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
These were full of earrings and necklaces and they've emptied that. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:52
One of my mum's rings. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:53
My husband's treasury money was in one of these drawers down here. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
-This is a local club that he runs. -Yes. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
-Can I ask who's in these pictures here? -That's my mum. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
-This is your mum. -She died three years ago. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
-And the worst part of all this, it was some of your mum's jewellery. -My mum's jewellery. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
-I've got her rings on, her main rings. -They're not going anywhere. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
But... you know, the dress ring and her earrings. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:17
I think we need to help you out somehow, don't we? | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
-We don't want this happening again. -No. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
They've taken the pillowcase off that pillow. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
Do you know, they would have used that as a... | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
-Uh-huh. A swag bag. -A little swag bag, yeah. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
Hmm. It's just the thought of 'em being... in your house. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
-Oh, Wendy. -And then you become a prisoner in your own home, don't you. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
-Well, we don't want that. -No. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
I'm not going to let that happen at all. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
Wendy is truly distraught | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
and it's vital that we secure this family's home as soon as possible. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:49
So I've arranged for Mark the locksmith to come straight round | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
to replace the lock on their broken back door. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
Meanwhile, PC Rob Quinn is cracking on with the investigation. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:02
I've got as many crime details as I can get to get the offence properly recorded, | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
preserved the scene as much as we can for scenes of crime, | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
see if we can get any fingerprints, that kind of thing. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
Hopefully, fingers crossed, get some property back, | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
which is always the nice part of our job. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
We'll do further extensive house to house enquiries tomorrow | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
and just see if we can identify any witnesses | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
or any CCTV that might become apparent. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
While PC Quinn and his colleagues are at work on the case, | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
my mission is to make this family home a safe haven again. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
I want to upgrade their security | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
and put the heart back into their ransacked bedroom. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
I hate coming in and seeing you in tears, Wendy, | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
with what's happened, obviously because of your mother's jewellery going. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:45
And it's heartbreaking, it's horrible. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
And it's affected the entire family here | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
and that's what I don't want to see and don't want ever to happen again. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
I think there's things we can do to really up the security here | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
and make a massive difference. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
Does that sound like something you'd like us to do? | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
-Yeah. -Yeah, if you wouldn't mind. -HE LAUGHS -If I wouldn't mind! | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
-Yeah. -Let's do it. Let's get it done. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
Let's make this place feel like home again. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
It's so heartbreaking to see what's happened to Wendy and the family there | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
and the devastation this burglary has caused. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
I really want to help them, so I'm going to get on the phone, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
make some calls to some people I think might just be able to help. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
Hi, is that Steve? Hi, Bess, it's Rav. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
Hi, is that Barry? Hi, Gary, it's Rav. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
Steve, I need a bit of a favour from you. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
'Yeah?' | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
We really need to look at their security, I don't think it's good enough. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
I want to do something extra for them on the inside | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
-and I'm really hoping you can help me out. -'Yeah, no problem.' | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
-'I can give you a helping hand there, I'm sure.' -'OK. OK.' | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
OK. I'll send you the details, Bess. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
I'll see you up there and hopefully you can wave your magic wand. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
-'Well, I hope so. All right.' -Thanks, Bess. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
-'Bye.' -Bye-bye. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:05
It's early morning and my volunteers are primed and ready for action. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
The first of my troops to arrive is PC Paul Croft, | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
a Crime Prevention Officer who is here to give me his expert opinion | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
on how to secure this family home. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
OK, Paul. So, obviously this is the front of the property, | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
and obviously one thing that's missing is an alarm box. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
A nice box on the front of the house, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
just to show the offender that there is one and that people actually care about this, yeah. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
And if a burglar was to walk along, you have a look at the two houses, | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
see an alarm box on one and not on the other, | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
it's pretty simple to see which one they're probably going to target. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
And this could be why this property has been targeted. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
OK, so it's easily fixed, we'll get onto that. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
They've got a light there. I don't know if it works, but it looks a bit old and tatty. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
A new light on there, just to freshen it up a bit. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
Yeah, it'd be of benefit to change that. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
So we just want to lighten up this area. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
Let's go and have a look round the back, see what's there. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:02
Now another area of concern that you've pointed out is the garage. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:06
If we actually give it a push, as you can see... | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
You see there. That does not take a lot for me to prise that open, | 0:08:08 | 0:08:13
anyone could bend that up and crawl in. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
We need to secure it in a much better way, | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
and I would suggest a garage door defender, which simply is a T-shaped bar | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
which would sit down at the bottom of the door here | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
and then it would prevent you from pushing it open. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
Paul, this is the door that they broke into. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
At the time of the burglary, we had a handle here that they actually snapped off. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:35
Now, the homeowners have changed this with this flat panel there, | 0:08:35 | 0:08:40
because they're actually happy not to have a handle on the outside. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
-Security wise, safe enough? -That's absolutely fine for me, yeah. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:47
They can't use it as an entry door in terms of unlocking it, | 0:08:47 | 0:08:51
a keyed entry, but blanking it off is fine. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
The homeowners have even taken the steps themselves, | 0:08:53 | 0:08:58
of putting in a couple of sash jammers there as well. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:01
They just act as basically bolts, but that's an excellent idea. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
And what these sash jammers prove is that although we're here to fix up their property | 0:09:04 | 0:09:09
and make it as safe and secure as we possibly can, | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
if you're relatively good at DIY there's a lot you can do yourself. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:16
But there's loads more we can do with a little bit of specialist help. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
I want Wendy and Stuart to feel as safe as possible, | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
so getting an alarm fitted is my top priority. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
And some of my willing volunteers are onto it straight away. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
But it isn't just the security around this house that needs attention, | 0:09:35 | 0:09:40
I want to make this place feel like their home again. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:42
And designer Bess Sturman is on hand to help. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
Bess, thanks for coming up. This is the bedroom that Stuart shares with Wendy | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
and this is where all their personal belongings were rifled through | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
and all her mother's jewellery was stolen. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
And they're really upset by what's happened. | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
So I want to change that and I want to give them somewhere | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
where they can relax and enjoy their home again. And that's where you come in. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
Absolutely. It's a really personal space, a master bedroom, | 0:10:05 | 0:10:10
and it's a really important space to make their own again. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
We're going to change the layout of the room a bit and make it feel like a completely different space. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:18
As night falls, the police are continuing to investigate the burglary at Wendy and Stuart's. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:23
And the results from West Yorkshire's forensic team have come back. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:28
Unfortunately, there was nothing solid forensically | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
that came from the examination | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
to connect us to any suspects at that time. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:34
So, as a result of that, we have to look at other means of identifying the suspects | 0:10:34 | 0:10:39
using intelligence sources and seeing what we got back from things such as Crimestoppers. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:44
We've got PCSOs out there on the streets talking to a lot of people. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
As a result of the intelligence being gathered, we identified three suspects. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:52
So, the next challenge for the police will be to try to track down the suspects. | 0:10:55 | 0:11:00
Meanwhile, back at Wendy and Stuart's, | 0:11:00 | 0:11:02
my mission is to banish the bad memories the burglary holds for the family | 0:11:02 | 0:11:07
as they're still really struggling to come to terms with it. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
It's been pretty devastating really, you know. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
It's affected Wendy more than what it has done me, because all of her mum's jewellery, that's gone. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:18
That can't be replaced at all. You know what I mean? | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
It's left Wendy really, really upset about it. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
Money, I can get over that but jewellery we can't. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
It's just... horrendous. It's the worst thing that's happened to me probably, | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
apart from losing my mum. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:34
The thought of someone being in your house, in your room, | 0:11:34 | 0:11:38
it's just horrendous. It's... it's horrible. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:42
It's time for them to head off, so we can get to work | 0:11:44 | 0:11:48
and hopefully restore their love for their home. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
Luckily for me, my earlier calls really paid off | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
and a wave of helpers is descending on Wendy and Stuart's house. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
Ladies and gents, thank you for rushing down here so quickly. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
For those of you that don't know, this home belongs to Wendy and Stuart and their two girls. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:13
Now they've just been burgled and it's really hit them hard, | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
because Wendy had so many sentimental things stolen that belonged to her late mother | 0:12:16 | 0:12:21
and Stuart had the money for his local football team stolen. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
So, I really want to help them out and that's where you come in. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
So let's get in there and let's get this place fixed up. Ready? | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
-ALL: Yeah! Yo! -To achieve my goal, we need to finish the alarm, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
secure the garage, replace the exterior lights, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:38
change the weak front door lock | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
and dramatically alter the look of Stuart and Wendy's bedroom | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
to get rid of the horrible memories from the night of the burglary. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
Imagine someone going through your stuff, | 0:12:48 | 0:12:51
it's just... it's not a nice feeling. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
So yeah, all I can do to help them, definitely. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
Next, it's time to clear the bedroom. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
And the alarm guys are working flat out, too. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14
We're fitting a wireless system. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:15
So we've got the main control panel in this unit here | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
and then we've got wireless detectors, | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
so there's no cables involved, all battery operated. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
If a person comes in through the doors or the windows that will set the system off. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:27
We've got pet immune detectors, so that they won't trigger the detectors. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:32
Ingenious. What a fantastic gadget. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
Perfect if you're an animal lover. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:37
Upstairs the prep for the bedroom is almost finished, | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
which means Bess, our designer, can start turning her wonderful vision into a beautiful reality. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:47
So I've found a fabric which is like a tree motif with flowers | 0:13:47 | 0:13:51
and we're going to use that as the curtains, which is the only real pattern in the room, | 0:13:51 | 0:13:56
and possibly a couple of cushions I might just sneak in there as well to liven it up a bit. | 0:13:56 | 0:14:01
This is for the curtain rail for the new curtains to go on. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
Just a better support. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
While my team of local heroes are cracking on in the bedroom, | 0:14:17 | 0:14:21
I'm keen to find out how we are going to solve the security risk posed by the garage door. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:27
-Steve, good to see you. -Hiya. -How are you doing? | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
-All right. -So tell me what you're doing with the garage. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
What we're putting on here is we've drilled a plate to the floor, anchored it with two rawl shields. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:38
It has a lug on it that fits over the top | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
and that sits in front of the garage door to stop it opening. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:45
That's what we were concerned about. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:46
-It wasn't that safe the security on this door. -No. No. No it was quite weak. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:50
That looks pretty safe to me. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
It looks quite awesome when it's, you know on the floor and you see it, you know. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
And this padlock goes behind it to lock it all together. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
-Excellent. That is a great deterrent. That says stay away. -Absolutely. Yeah. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:03
You're not going to get through. Brilliant, Steve. Thank you. I'll let you crack on with that. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:08
Well, we're doing everything we can to secure Wendy and Stuart's home | 0:15:08 | 0:15:12
and the police are continuing to track down their stolen items. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
Wendy and Stuart had a lot of jewellery taken. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:19
Jewellery's something which can hold a lot of sentimental value. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
And it's important for us as police officers to try and get that back for people. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:26
We do go round all the local jewellers in the city centre | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
and broadcast what jewellery we're looking for. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:33
We might stop and check someone with that property, | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
we might be searching a house for something unconnected and see it. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:39
So a link to the jewellery, could be the key that unlocks this case. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:44
Meanwhile, back at the house, work continues at a great pace. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
It's looking very good. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:53
Almost 90% of people who are burgled are emotionally affected | 0:15:53 | 0:15:58
and Wendy and Stuart are no exception. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:00
And no-one knows better than Wendy's dad just what this transformation will mean for all the family. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:07
-So Edward, obviously you're Wendy's dad. -Yes. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
-You came over at the time of the burglary. -Yeah. I came up. -Just as moral support. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:14
-Yeah. Yeah. -We're doing some work on Wendy's house now, | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
-the trades are coming and going all day long as you can see behind you. -Oh, yeah. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:20
Do you think this is going to help just a little bit. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
Yes, it'll just perk her up a little. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
-She needs that, doesn't she? -Yeah. Yeah. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:27
With everything going it's... All the jewellery and the cash. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:32
-Because she was devastated. -Oh. yes. Yes. Oh, aye, well, it does. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:36
I mean, you've been violated. haven't you? | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
-There's been somebody in your house that weren't invited. -It's awful. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
On a security point, making it that much safer on the outside, | 0:16:41 | 0:16:45
that's got to be a positive for her and the family. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:47
Definitely. Yeah. And the burglar alarm up. It's deterrents. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:51
-That's what we want. -That's what you've got to do. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
Oh, yes. Great deterrents are the answer, and one of the best is a brand new strong lock. | 0:16:53 | 0:17:00
I've been overwhelmed by the support our local trades people have shown for Wendy and Stuart. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:09
Andy, you obviously heard what happened to the couple here | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
about the burglary and you didn't hesitate to come round and help out the pair of you. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:16
And this has actually struck a chord with you | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
because you've previously had someone break in to your own home. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:22
I've been burgled as well, yeah. Yeah, I know exactly how they're feeling. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:26
It was actually my little girl that heard them and woke up and alerted me. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:32
Yeah. It's an awful thing to happen. | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
But you just hope, if you were in the same position, somebody would help you out. So... | 0:17:34 | 0:17:38
-Yeah. Let's hope so. -You've just got to do your bit if you can. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:41
It's almost the end of the day, | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
but my team of volunteers are using every ounce of their energy | 0:17:58 | 0:18:02
working well into the night to get the job done. | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
During the break-in, | 0:18:08 | 0:18:09
the treasury money belonging to Stuart's football team was stolen. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:13
It keeps me active. I've played since I was back at junior school and now I'm 48. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:20
And his team-mates can't believe something so awful | 0:18:22 | 0:18:26
could happen to such a truly decent bloke. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
Stuart's a great guy. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
Really caring, a great footballer but a really caring guy, | 0:18:30 | 0:18:32
who looks out for the guys, not just while at training, | 0:18:32 | 0:18:35
but also outside if people have had problems like they have had in the past. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
It's just disappointing that something like this can happen to somebody like him. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:45
You don't know why he's been robbed or anything like that, | 0:18:45 | 0:18:48
but it's just a shame that it happens to somebody who just tries to do something good in the community. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:53
But Stuart and his team aren't the only ones who've been setting the pace. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:02
Back at Police HQ, they've made headway with the burglary. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:07
Following the intelligence received | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
in relation to Wendy and Stuart's burglary, | 0:19:09 | 0:19:11
two persons have been arrested. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
No further action's been taken against them as we're unable to link them to the offence. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:19
There's one further suspect who we are actively looking for, | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
and we will be getting them into custody. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
It's fantastic news that the police have a lead on a suspect | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
and hopefully somebody will be brought to book for this horrible crime. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:32
It's early morning and already my gang of good Samaritans | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
are at Wendy and Stuart's home eager to complete the transformation. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:42
There's a lot to do today. We've got the radiator cabinet to build, | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
we've got the curtains to put up, the blind to put up, | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
and then we've got to get all the furniture in and make it look really nice | 0:19:49 | 0:19:53
for Stuart and Wendy to come back to. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:55
The stolen football club money has not only affected Stuart, | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
but also his football team. So team-mate Andy has come round to show his support. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:26
Well, the money goes towards paying for the pitches, | 0:20:26 | 0:20:29
it also goes towards insurance for the players, | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
so if they get injured they're covered. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
So if they miss any work days then that's paid for. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
It also goes towards kit and football equipment as well. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:43
It was awful to hear that, you know such an awful thing happened, | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
you know, being broken into. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
Burglary is a truly distressing crime which touches so many lives, | 0:20:49 | 0:20:54
but with the help of my volunteers I'm hoping that we can erase the nightmares | 0:20:54 | 0:20:58
for this hardworking and ever so deserving family. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:02
So you have to lift that side up. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:09
-Lift it on. -Just let you finish off there, Wayne. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
Bess, this looks like a completely different room. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
-Just finishing touches now, so tell me what's still to go on. -Yes. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
So we've got the photographs that I've put together over there. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:21
That will go on that wall here, but I'm wanting to get the mirror positioned first so that we can get | 0:21:21 | 0:21:26
a nice reflection of that and you get to see it in both aspects. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:29
So the mirror going up there. Very, very fancy looking mirror. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
I can't believe the change, actually, | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
-it's just completely different and I think they're going to absolutely love it. -Oh, I hope so. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:39
I really wanted to make the room completely different for them, | 0:21:39 | 0:21:42
so that it has no remnant of the memories of Wendy coming in | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
and finding all of the mess all over the bed. Hopefully, | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
the only thing that will look familiar is the pictures of their daughters | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
-that we've put together for them. -Very nice. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:53
And everything else will feel a bit like a hotel for them for a few days. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:56
-Well, I think you're really going to make a massive difference. -Good. | 0:21:56 | 0:22:00
So I think they're going to be very, very pleased. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:02
Thank you for all your hard work. It looks amazing. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:05
We're heading into the final hours before Wendy, Stuart and their daughters return home. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:15
And I have to say that the determination and kindness shown by my team of volunteers | 0:22:15 | 0:22:20
has been remarkable. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:23
We've updated the burglar alarm, put in new locks. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:27
Installed dusk-to-dawn lights, | 0:22:27 | 0:22:30
and secured their vulnerable garage door. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
But what will PC Paul Croft think of our new security measures? | 0:22:34 | 0:22:38
I think if I have to give a mark here, | 0:22:38 | 0:22:42
originally we'd have probably been looking at maybe three or four out of ten for the security on this home. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:47
And again with what's been done, the improvements that have been made, | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
I think we'll be looking at perhaps an eight, maybe even pushing up towards a nine. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:56
Wendy and Stuart were left devastated when their home was attacked by thieves. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:05
But my army of helpers has turned this terrible situation around by revamping their security | 0:23:09 | 0:23:14
and restoring the tranquillity of their ransacked bedroom. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:19
But what will they make of our changes? | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
-Hi, Wendy. -Hi. Are you OK? -Yeah, I'm very well thank you. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
-How are you? -Good. Yes, fine thank you. -It's good to see you. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:34
-And you, too. -Good to see you. -And what have you been doing? | 0:23:34 | 0:23:38
-How are you doing? Good to see you. All right? -Yes. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
-Do you want to have a look at what we've done? -Certainly, if you don't mind. -Follow me. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:47
OK. Obviously the front of your house has changed a little bit. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:50
As you can see, we've put a new light in there by the front door. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
When it gets dark it will automatically go on, when it gets light it will go off. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
It will give gentle lighting around here | 0:23:57 | 0:23:59
just to make sure no-one's sneaking around up to no good. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:03
Also, you can see on the front door we've actually changed the lock. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
That's much safer than what was there before. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
-And also if you look up. -Oh, wow! | 0:24:09 | 0:24:13
Yeah, you can see your new burglar alarm box flashing away doing its business. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
I think that's such a good visible deterrent. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:19
-It says your house is that much safer and more secure. -Thank you. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
So that's this side. Come round with me to the back | 0:24:22 | 0:24:24
-and I'll show you a couple more changes we've got there. -Right. Thank you. Yeah. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
-If you just look here, we've got another one of those lights on the back there. -Yeah. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:35
Because this was the area that was attacked by the intruders. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
So, if you brighten up that area it's going to put them off even thinking about having a go there. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:42
And something else you can see on the bottom of your garage is that big red, | 0:24:42 | 0:24:47
what we call a door defender. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:48
Now, what we found when we did an assessment with a police officer here was that that garage door, | 0:24:48 | 0:24:54
-you could actually bend it right up, and someone could have crawled in. -Really? | 0:24:54 | 0:24:58
So, it comes off. It's just one key and the whole thing lifts off and it takes five seconds. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:02
-Fantastic. Thank you. -OK. So that's what we've done on the outside. -Yep. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:06
-You probably want to know what's gone on on the inside. -Just a little. -Yes? Getting nervous. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:11
As you know, we wanted to do something a little extra for you. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:22
-Oh, my word! -So if you both come in. -Oh, my word! -I can't believe it! | 0:25:22 | 0:25:26
-Can't believe this is our bedroom. -Unbelievable! -Looks different, eh? | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
It's fantastic! It really is. It really is nice. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:34
-I can't believe it. -Yes, Wendy, I'll just go out and come back in | 0:25:34 | 0:25:38
-Oh, our pleasure. -Thank you. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:42
-Thank you. -Cheers, Rav. -My pleasure. My pleasure. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45
-I can't believe it. -And do you think this is going to go some way into helping you try | 0:25:45 | 0:25:51
and forget what happened when you walked in and found what the intruders had done to your bedroom. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:55
-Just some way towards helping. -Certainly. It's going to go a long way. -Definitely. A long way. | 0:25:55 | 0:26:00
-That's the main thing. -Thanks very much. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:02
-Two other people live here, obviously. -Yes. -The girls. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:05
-So, do you think they'll give the thumbs up? -Oh, definitely. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
-Shall we have a word. -Yes. -And get them in. Right, girls. Gabby and Alicia, do you want to come in? | 0:26:08 | 0:26:13
-Come on in. -HE LAUGHS | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
-It's all beautiful! -Come on in. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:18
What do you think of your parents' bedroom? | 0:26:18 | 0:26:22
-Wow! -I'm not even... I just... No, I just can't speak. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:27
-Just wow! -How? Just how? -Well, I'll tell you how. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:30
There's a lot of people that made this possible. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
And they've all pulled together, | 0:26:32 | 0:26:34
they've all worked really, really hard and they would like to say hello to you, | 0:26:34 | 0:26:39
I'm sure you'd probably like to say hello to them. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
Yeah, we would do, we'd like to say thank you as well. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
-They're out in your front garden right now. -Oh, wow! | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
Let's go and see them and say thank you as well. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49
So come on out, and meet the team. | 0:26:54 | 0:26:58
-There's a few faces you recognise there. -Yes. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:00
That have come to lend their support. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:02
These are all local tradesmen and women. All heard what happened to you | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
and all said that they really wanted to help you out. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
-Thank you. -Hello, everybody. Thank you very much. -Thank you. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:11
Well, what an amazing transformation, not just with the house but with their emotions. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:18
Just days ago there was tears of sadness, | 0:27:18 | 0:27:21
and now there's one or two tears of joy. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:24
It's great that we've been able to help this family after the trauma of the burglary. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:29
The police investigation continues, but they're here with some clear advice for us all. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:34
It's great that the whole community's come out to help Wendy and Stuart | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
particularly to get over the burglary that they've suffered. | 0:27:37 | 0:27:40
The biggest thing for me around the communities and neighbourhoods | 0:27:40 | 0:27:44
is looking after each other and keeping an eye out | 0:27:44 | 0:27:46
and if something look suspicious it probably is suspicious. Go with your gut feeling. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:51
I want that room. I want that room. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:02
This bedroom is just amazing. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:10
It just makes you realise that there's a lot of nice people out there. | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
There's a few bad ones, but there's a lot of nice people. | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
And I'm just overwhelmed. I really am. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:20
