There are 700,000 burglaries in the UK every year. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:07
But right across the country, dedicated police teams | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
are on the offensive, waging war against the criminals | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
who steal from local homeowners. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
Police! Open the door otherwise entry's going to have to be forced. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
For the victims of these crimes, it can take months, even years | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
to come to terms with what's happened. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
And the fact that they've so brazenly done it as well. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
Very angry. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
But in this series we're about to show them and you, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
how we can all beat the burglars. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
This is Crime Scene Rescue. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:56
On today's show we meet Amrit and Wendy, | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
a couple fighting to overcome the trauma of being burgled. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
-Right. -Yeah. -Give us a kiss. I love you. -Love you, too. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
Since they moved in a year ago, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
they've worked hard to create a comfortable home for themselves. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
But now their safe haven has been destroyed | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
after their home was ransacked. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
I feel absolutely sick that they think they've got the right | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
to be able to do what they've done, I really do. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
And as the police attempt to track down the criminals, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
we try and put the heart back into their home. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
Oh, thank you very much. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
That's really touched my heart. Oh, God! It's lovely. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
Like many places in the UK, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
West Yorkshire faces the ever present threat of burglary, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
and last year the police here dealt with over 14,000 break-ins. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:51
I'm going to join them on the front line | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
to see how they go about tackling the problem. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
But while I'm here, I also want to do everything I can | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
to help the victims of this terrible crime | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
Police, emergency. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
It's just after nine in the evening and another burglary has come in. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
When did you go out to work, sir? | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
PC Graham Lawton is attending the scene at Amrit and Wendy's house. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
The distraught couple recently returned home from work | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
to find their home had been ransacked. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
This is the internal patio door, which has been forced. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
There's a blunt mark there, which looks like a screwdriver. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:49
It appears the burglars broke the lock on the exterior door | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
to gain entry via the conservatory. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
Somebody had broken into our house and taken some very precious things | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
that are precious to us. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
We've worked hard all our lives, OK, to get ourselves things and, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
somebody thinks they've got the right to walk into my house | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
and take my stuff. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
A heartbroken Amrit and Wendy head upstairs with PC Lawton | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
to see what's been taken. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
Even though they've left his bank cards, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
the burglars have rifled through Amrit's wallet | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
and taken all his money. But that's not all that's gone. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
Our daughter's coming up for the weekend, it's her birthday | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
we've bought her stuff for her birthday, they've taken that also. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
The offenders have been in this room and as you can see | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
they've made quite an untidy search, pulling out drawers... | 0:03:39 | 0:03:44
PC Lawton continues to check what other items have been taken. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51
In here, there's been quite a lot of jewellery. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
They've been selective about what they've taken | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
but they've taken some expensive items of Asian gold and... | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
They've taken... I've noticed they've taken my earrings, | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
I had a bag of earrings there. My gold watch there. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
The burglars have stolen a large quantity of gold | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
from this dejected couple. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
Amrit had purchased much of the gold as an investment, | 0:04:14 | 0:04:18
but some of it also had great sentimental value | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
as his parents had given it to Wendy as a wedding gift. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
It's like hurt deep inside somewhere, you know what I mean? | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
It can't be replaced, can it? | 0:04:29 | 0:04:30
Yeah. You can't replace it, not with money, not with anything else, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:35
you know, because, it's something... | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
you know, my parents are not anymore here. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
-All this make me upset a little bit. -Mmm. It's OK. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
And it's like, you know, it's not money. Not like some memories. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:48
It's very important for you, you know what I mean. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
I've heard about Amrit and Wendy's plight | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
and I desperately want them to feel safe in their home tonight. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
So as a priority, I've arranged for a locksmith to come round | 0:04:57 | 0:05:02
and fit a new top of the range lock to the back door. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
Meanwhile, PC Lawton lists everything that's been stolen. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:11
As well as the gold and a birthday present for Wendy's daughter, | 0:05:11 | 0:05:15
the burglars have taken two laptops and two digital cameras, | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
one of which had irreplaceable photos of Amrit's late mother on it. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:24
It's been a really traumatic evening, | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
but I hope that the new lock on their door | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
will at least allow them to get a little bit of sleep tonight. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:34
It's the next morning and the police have arrived | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
at Amrit and Wendy's, and Sergeant Pamela Wright | 0:05:40 | 0:05:44
is heading up a team of officers, who are about to go door to door, | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
to check if any of the neighbours saw or heard anything | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
-relating to the burglary. -OK? So you've all got your addresses. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
-So, off we go and let's get on and get it done. -Right, Sarg. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:58
Scenes of Crime Officer Chris Barley has also turned up, | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
and he gets straight to work searching for forensic evidence. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:06
Sometimes mornings are a bit difficult because of the dew, | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
but in this case we've been fine. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
We have received information from the members of the public that live here, | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
one that there is CCTV that may have caught somebody - | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
we've got to check that out - and that there was a suspicious character | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
seen in the area. We've got a brief description of that person, | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
so we'll be passing that forward to our Intelligence Department | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
and hopefully it will lead us to an arrest. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
Unfortunately, we've not found anything identifiable | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
like fingerprints or footwear. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
I can say that the offender's probably been wearing gloves | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
probably woollen gloves, because they've come through | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
we've seen several glove marks on various items | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
as I've gone through the house. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
While the police are intent on catching the criminals, | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
I'm determined to help Amrit and Wendy in any way I can | 0:07:00 | 0:07:05
And Wendy you've had a chance to look through now | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
and find out all the items that are missing, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
-and there's a lot that's gone, isn't there? -A lot. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
I had a very old, very old jewellery box | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
that even the lid was slightly broken on it | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
but I kept things in there from when I was a kid. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
And in there my dad had made me, | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
which my dad's been gone now about 20 years, | 0:07:22 | 0:07:25
-and he made me a ring out of an old shilling. -Oh! | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
And they've taken that. It's not important to them, | 0:07:28 | 0:07:32
but it meant the world to me. It's of no value, | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
but why did they want THAT? | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
So, Amrit, those photographs obviously had a massive meaning | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
to you, because, they were your last memories of you and your mother. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
Of course, yeah. This is the last moment | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
what I spend with my mother, you know. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
All these photographs, all these memories, | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
they're all kept in my laptop, and all these memories are gone. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:56
You know, these are things that are not important to them. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
They've taken everything, haven't they, baby? | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
-So... -They mean so much to you, clearly. Clearly. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
-It's upset me. -Don't be. -I'm not surprised it upsets you, Wendy, | 0:08:04 | 0:08:10
it's an awful thing to happen. No one has the right | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
to make you feel like that in your own house, | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
and I'm determined to sort this out. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
And let's get you fixed up, let's make you feel nice and safe | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
and secure, and try and give you your home back. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
I've been really touched by this couple | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
who've really been through the mill. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
I'm making it my personal mission | 0:08:28 | 0:08:30
to overhaul the security of their home, | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
as I can't bear the thought of them | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
ever having to go through another burglary. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
Time to get on the phone and assemble a crack team | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
of local trades people, to help me fix up their house. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
Hi, Gary, it's Rav. Mark, it's Rav. How are you? | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
Hi, is that Barry? | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
I'm well thank you, Faye, I'm after a bit of a favour, though. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
Do you reckon you can help me out with something? I'm trying to fix up | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
their property and make it as safe as possible. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
I want to do something nice for them on the inside and in the bedroom | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
particularly that was completely rifled through by the offenders. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
We're looking at sort of changing the colours and just making it feel | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
like a different room for them, and make it feel nice for the couple | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
and sort of give them their home back. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
Do you think you can help me with that? Lovely. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
While my team of local trades people are preparing to do battle | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
with the security at the house, | 0:09:31 | 0:09:32
the police are continuing to track down their stolen items. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
They've sent a description of Wendy and Amrit's gold | 0:09:36 | 0:09:40
round to local shops. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:42
This is a tactic West Yorkshire Police regularly use | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
as it cuts the chain of stolen goods | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
and can lead to the recovery of items. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
Back at the house, it's time to crack on with the security upgrade. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:56
First person on the scene | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
is the Crime Prevention Specialist, Dave Harrison. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
He's here to give me some expert advice. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:04
-So, Dave, you've had a quick scout around the property... -Yeah. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
just to see what improvements we'll be able to make. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
Let's start with the front. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:12
Is there anything there we can do to strengthen that, | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
or just improve the security as a whole? | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
Yeah, I think to improve the door... | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
Looking at the locking system, it looks quite worn | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
so the handle itself needs to be replaced as well. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
Also a very quick point, I see they've got a light | 0:10:27 | 0:10:29
just on the top of the porch area there almost. | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
If they've got a light it's got to work really, doesn't it? | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
Absolutely. I mean it's there for decoration. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
Obviously it does help them, because you can actually see. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:41
It's plate glass through the door, | 0:10:41 | 0:10:43
so you can actually see anybody who's outside, so that will help. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
And then of course if they have some additional lighting | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
-for the vehicles when they get parked down here. -OK. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:51
So, if we put some lighting on the side, | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
-you'd like to see it really nice and high? -Yeah. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
-Well, it stops the offender from actually getting to it. -OK. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
That's the front and the side. Let's go round the back | 0:10:59 | 0:11:01
and there's a few changes we can do there. Right | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
In the war against burglars, it's important to make your home look safe. | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
Criminals will always go for the easiest target. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
OK, Dave, obviously the rear of the property now and one thing | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
that strikes me straight way is that really old crusty alarm box. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:17
To me, it gives the impression it is not working | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
-and that's got to go, hasn't it? -Yes, it has. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
And both boxes look as if there's no maintenance going on, | 0:11:22 | 0:11:27
-they possibly don't work. -We can see here on the patio door there | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
the lock... obviously this was initially where the intruder got in. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:34
-We've changed that. -Yes. -And is that to the standard you want to see? | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
-That's to the standard, we're happy with that. -Good. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
Through the conservatory there's the internal patio door. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
Again, the intruders forced their way through that. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
-Is there anything we can do to strengthen that? -Yeah. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
I think we can put some interior locking locks on there, | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
and also it's going to form part of the alarm system. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
There's no time to waste, | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
we need to get straight on with the security overhaul | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
at Wendy and Amrit's, and the first members | 0:12:00 | 0:12:02
of my eager team of helpers has arrived. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
Chris is fitting a new top of the range alarm system, | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
and Ian is installing exterior motion sensor lights. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
A good visible alarm is a great deterrent to scare off the thieves. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:16
So really you put this system in to make it as hard as possible... | 0:12:17 | 0:12:21
-Yeah. -for any intruder to come in. -That's correct. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:23
-So you put contacts on the front door. -Correct. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:26
Now a contact, for those that don't know, is two points that meet | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
and when you open the door if the alarm is set, | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
-when that contact is broken the alarm's going to sound. -That is correct, yes. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:35
And you've done the same on the back door | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
-because you know that's where the intruder did get in. -Yes. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
So once this is locked, if someone was somehow to get in | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
-and to force that open, the alarm's going to sound. -Yeah. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
And if they do manage to get through that, which is highly unlikely... | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
-Yeah. -we've got a second defence, which is a P-I-R. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
So, that's sending invisible beams through, so if anyone was to walk in | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
and break that beam, the alarm would sound, and it does sound great. | 0:12:53 | 0:12:57
The problem we have with the couple here is there was an old system installed already. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01
-It was too complex for them. You've thought about that. -Yeah. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
-You've got something very simple haven't you? -Very simple. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
Now, what we can do is use just a standard key fob, | 0:13:06 | 0:13:10
-it's like what you'd use for your car. -Mmm-hmm. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
And you press a button and it's so simple. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
-You've got unlock and lock. -So, nice and easy. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
And what I love is your little touch that I've noticed. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
I love that. You've actually put Wendy's name on it | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
-so they know who's is who. -They know who's is who. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:25
This is fantastic. I'm sure the couple are going to be pleased | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
-with what you've done. -So do we. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
Outside Ian is finishing off by fitting the exterior lights | 0:13:31 | 0:13:35
high up, so they can't be easily smashed. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
But I also want to do something extra for this lovely couple | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
who've had such a terrible time. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
It's just disgusting and it's wrong, very wrong. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
And I hope they can live with themselves. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
But at the end of the day I don't expect they care anyway. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
Their bedroom was targeted by the burglars | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
and it now holds upsetting memories for Amrit and Wendy. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
I want to transform it and create a new fresh space for them. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:03
Designer Faye Butterworth is here to help. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
What I want to do, as a little extra | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
as well as taking care of the security on the outside, | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
is give them a place where they can almost forget about the burglary, | 0:14:11 | 0:14:15
-give them a fresh start and a place to relax. -Yeah. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
And I think we can do that in this bedroom. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:20
You've got a few examples here of different schemes that you could do. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:24
So which one, after speaking to Amrit and Wendy, | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
-are you going to go for? -Well, I think after speaking to the couple | 0:14:26 | 0:14:30
that I think the best option for them | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
would look at something along the lines of the chic boutique. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:35
So, I want to give them a nice monochromatic feel to the room | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
-so it's nice and neutral. -Mmm-hmm. -With an accent colour brought in. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
That way in future if they do sort of get bored with their colour, | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
-they can actually very easily change it. -OK. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
So that's the colour scheme. Anything else you're going to do? | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49
Yeah. We're going to really change the furniture. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:52
The storage is obviously somewhat of an issue in this room. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:54
Quite minimal, isn't it? It is and we don't have matching bedside units | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
-Mmm-hmm. -And we've got a bit of an issue with the TV over here. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
So furniture is key in here and storage is key, | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
so we need to address all of those issues for Wendy and Amrit. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
Yeah, it sounds fantastic. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
I'm sure they're going to be really, really happy with that. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:11
'Hopefully Faye's ideas for their bedroom will raise | 0:15:11 | 0:15:14
'the couple's spirits. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
'It's no wonder they're shaken - around 87% | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
'of people who've been burgled report being emotionally affected.' | 0:15:19 | 0:15:23
It's 6.30 in the morning and Amrit and Wendy | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
are preparing to leave their home, so we can move in | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
to get cracking on the bedroom and continue overhauling their security. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:36
-Right. -Yeah. -Give us a kiss. I love you. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
Love you too. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:41
Since the burglary, this dedicated couple have been through | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
a huge range of emotions, but now they are looking ahead. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
I'm not going to let what's happened to us spoil our future, | 0:15:47 | 0:15:51
and we're going to try and put it behind us and move on. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55
'I desperately want to make Amrit and Wendy's future a bright one, | 0:15:55 | 0:15:58
'and I'm not alone. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:00
'It's the next part of my transformation and my band | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
'of community-minded tradespeople are arriving, | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
'keen and eager to help.' | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
OK, ladies and gents, thanks for rushing over here so quickly. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
This is Amrit and Wendy's house and recently they were burgled. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:15
And not only was an amount of gold and computer equipment stolen, | 0:16:15 | 0:16:19
but also the last pictures | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
Amrit had of himself and his late mother. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
They've gone. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:26
As you can imagine, the couple | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
are completely devastated by what happened, | 0:16:28 | 0:16:30
and I need your help to change that. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
What we do have is a very deserving couple that really needs your help. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
What we don't have is an awful lot of time. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
So let's get in there and get this place fixed up. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:42
THEY CHEER | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
I think that might be glued that side. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:48
179. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53 | |
What might be worth doing, Steve, | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
if we can get just a coat of white round that, so then the electricians | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
can fit that light, cos it's a circular one but it's flush. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:05
We haven't got any room for error, so I don't want anything cut. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:16
The overhaul of the bedroom is taking shape. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
Meanwhile, downstairs, the security upgrade is also picking up the pace. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:25
It's an anti-snap lock that I'm putting in. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
Basically it's got a break off point, | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
so if a burglar does attack the door, it'll just break off, | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
it's weakened, and then it'll basically shut your door down. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
Faye, it looks like a different room already. You've obviously done loads of work. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
Tell me what's happened so far and what's still to go. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
Right. The guys have gone great guns today. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
The wallpaper's all been stripped and all the paper, | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
the original paper that was on, was all lifted back. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:55
-All the painting's finished now. -Right. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
Michelle at the moment is doing the soft furnishings, | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
she's getting on with the voile. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:02
Michelle, what are you doing over there? | 0:18:02 | 0:18:04
-It looks like you're hemming something. -I am, yes. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:06
-Yeah, what is it? -I'm getting the length of the voile. We're trying to | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
get the voile, obviously, to sit on the windowsill here. | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
So I'm just hanging it up and pinning it | 0:18:12 | 0:18:14
so that I can then seam it. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
It's not just cos you think it looks really nice that you've put this on, | 0:18:16 | 0:18:19
there's another reason why you've done that, isn't there? | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
That's right. Originally the couple had a wooden blind up, | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
but we obviously take that down | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
and we're having lovely full-length curtains on there. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
But, for a security point of view, | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
we want some opaqueness to the window, | 0:18:30 | 0:18:32
so this was just to avoid anybody looking in. So that's why we're going to add it. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:35
-A bit more privacy in here. -Absolutely, yes. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:37
-All right, girls, I'll let you get back to it. -Fantastic. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:40
Loads of work to do and I'll bring you a strong coffee. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
-Yes. That'd be lovely. -Keep this one. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
'While my team of local heroes are beavering away at the house, | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
'back at police HQ the investigation into the burglary continues.' | 0:18:49 | 0:18:53
The property which was stolen in the burglary, | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
which was obviously electrical items like the laptops, | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
certain programmes can be installed on them - tracking software. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:04
That's something which obviously we advise everyone who has property | 0:19:04 | 0:19:07
of that kind of nature, to get, whether it be your iPhone or the laptops. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:11
And then obviously it gives us a better opportunity of recovering that property. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
The main focus on this is the jewellery for us. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:17
That is something we would like to get back for Amrit and Wendy. | 0:19:17 | 0:19:20
We appreciate it holds dear sentimental value to them. | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
We're hoping that as a result of the inquiries we're conducting | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
with the jewellery shops in and around Leeds, | 0:19:26 | 0:19:28
that we will generate some inquiries back which may lead to some suspects. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:34
Well, that's good to hear. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:36
And as night falls, my troops are still hard at work. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:41
It's quite late in the day, so we're just getting the carpet finished. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
It's being laid now by Gary down there. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
The next thing on the agenda is Michelle and I are going to get the bed upstairs, get that put together, | 0:19:51 | 0:19:56
constructed and ready for the wardrobe guys in the morning, | 0:19:56 | 0:20:00
just to pull some time back this evening to make sure that by tomorrow | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
we're going to be on schedule and have all the reveal done. | 0:20:03 | 0:20:08
It's early morning and there's still lots of work to do | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
before Amrit and Wendy return home. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
Hi, Lee. I'm just going to interrupt you. Tell me what you're doing at the moment. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:37
A fitted wardrobe, just putting a shelf in. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:39
The point of having a fitted wardrobe is you're going to make the most of the space, | 0:20:39 | 0:20:43
cos obviously you haven't got a lot to work with, have you? | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
Yeah, this minimises the space. by the time we've got the doors in and got the mirrors on, | 0:20:46 | 0:20:50
it'll feel like a different room altogether. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
And it's not just the bedroom that's getting attention. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
Perfectionist Faye has nipped downstairs to paint around where the alarm was fitted. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:10
It's nice to be able to give back and help people out. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
You know, give them something really nice | 0:21:13 | 0:21:17
after the experience they've been through. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
You know, it's just... it's good for the soul. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
Upstairs the team are on the home straight | 0:21:25 | 0:21:28
and they're just completing the finishing touches to the bedroom. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:31
Before Amrit and Wendy return home, | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
Crime Prevention Officer Dave Harrison has come round | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
to review all of the new security measures we've put in place. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:45
We've added a new lock to the back door, front door, | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
and a sensor to the sliding patio door. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:52
A new top of the range alarm has also been fitted, | 0:21:52 | 0:21:54
and we've added two exterior lights to discourage any would-be burglars | 0:21:54 | 0:21:58
from sneaking around in the dark. So what's Dave's verdict? | 0:21:58 | 0:22:02
So in conclusion, when you look at the security of the house, | 0:22:04 | 0:22:07
before all this work was done it was really poor. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:12
But now, it really is exceptional. Eight out of ten. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:16
I'm delighted that Dave is happy with all that we've done | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
to upgrade the security at Amrit and Wendy's home. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:22
I've got my fingers crossed they'll feel the same way too. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:27
I'm just waiting for Amrit and Wendy to turn up and see what we've done to their house. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:31
I'm a bit nervous, but I hope they like it. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:33
And here they are. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:36
-Hey, Amrit. How are you doing? -Not bad. How are you? | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
Oh, I'm good, I'm good. Good to see you both. | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
-How are you doing? Are you all right? -Oh, yeah, yeah. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
-Hi Wendy. How are you? -I'm good, thank you. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:53
-Are you nervous? -A little bit, yeah! -Oh! Come here. Good to see you. -And you too darling. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:58
Wah! Right. What we've done to your house | 0:22:58 | 0:23:02
is make it as secure as we possibly can, because we do not want any hint of a second offence to come back. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:08
We just don't want any offenders to try and get into your home, so it's nice and safe now. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:12
We've got on the front door there a brand-new lock, that is | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
-the strongest we can possibly get. -Yeah. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:17
There is absolutely no way anyone will be able to snap it out | 0:23:17 | 0:23:20
like they did before, and get in. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:21
-Now, in addition to that really strong door lock... -Yeah. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:24
-..we've gone one step further than that. -OK. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:26
So if you just let me whiz in front of you. Come with me. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:30
-Just look up. -Wow! -See there? -Oh, wow! Yeah. My goodness. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:34
-A brand-new burglar alarm system we've put in. -Fantastic. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:38
So you're... And yeah, you've seen it, | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
-we've got a light as well. -Brilliant. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:42
That's got a little sensor on the light, | 0:23:42 | 0:23:44
-so if anyone was to walk through, in darkness... -Yeah. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
-..it would illuminate. -Fantastic. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:49
And it just gives that impression that this place is protected. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
-Absolutely. -If anyone was to walk past and see that, | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
they'll think, hey, hands off. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:57
Absolutely fantastic. That is absolutely fantastic, it's brilliant. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
OK, obviously the rear of your house now, | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
-and if you just look up for me, right at the top. -Oh, look. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
Oh, yeah, fantastic. Brilliant. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:08
Another light. On the night of the offence, | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
-this is how they got in, wasn't it? -Yes. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:12
Through your back conservatory door | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
-and then via your patio door on the inside. -Yes. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:16
So that lock has been changed for the super strong one | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
-that you've now got at the front as well. -Yes. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:20
Also, on the doors, we've put what they call contacts. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:24
We've also got the sensors on the inside - | 0:24:24 | 0:24:26
should anyone go in through a window, | 0:24:26 | 0:24:28
-it will set the alarm off as well. -Brilliant. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:30
-You've got all-round security. -Absolutely brilliant. Fantastic. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
-It's great. -These are all the security items that we've fitted | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
to your property, so it is much, much safer now. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
But we wanted to do a little extra for you. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
So on the inside, there's something that we've done | 0:24:41 | 0:24:44
-upstairs in your bedroom. -Oh! -Oh, really? OK. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:47
-Would you like to have a look? -Yes. Absolutely. -Of course, yes. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:51
'I'm hoping they'll be as delighted with what we've done upstairs | 0:24:51 | 0:24:55
'as they are with the new security measures. | 0:24:55 | 0:24:57
'This devoted couple's bedroom has become the room they now associate | 0:25:00 | 0:25:04
'with uninvited burglars rifling through their belongings. | 0:25:04 | 0:25:07
'But we wanted to give them a new start. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:12
'We've updated their bedroom with a fresh contemporary theme | 0:25:12 | 0:25:16
'that will hopefully remove the bad memories.' | 0:25:16 | 0:25:19
-You might notice a few changes. -Oh, my God! | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
-You may notice a few changes in your bedroom. -Oh, my... Oh, my God. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:29
-That's amazing. -It's so beautiful, it's so beautiful. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:34
-That is amazing. -Oh, my God. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
Oh, my God, that's... Look at that. That is stunning. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:41
-Look at that. -Oh, God. -Oh, my God, it's so nice. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
Do you like the pictures? | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
-Oh, yes, I love... my mum is there. -Yeah. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
Oh, it's so nice, it's so beautiful! | 0:25:47 | 0:25:49
We knew that you'd lost all those pictures of your mum. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
-And that's one that our crew found. -That is so lovely. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
And she repaired it. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:56
It was torn and she blew it up because she knew how much it meant | 0:25:56 | 0:25:59
-to you when you lost the pictures of your mum. -Thank you very much, | 0:25:59 | 0:26:02
that's really touched my heart. Oh, God, it's lovely. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:05
-It's very nice. -It's absolutely gorgeous. It's absolutely gorgeous. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:09
-Look at the light there. -Oh, my God. Oh, God! | 0:26:09 | 0:26:13
I can't believe it. How can you make a room look like this? | 0:26:13 | 0:26:17
It's just stunning. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:19
I can't believe it could look like this. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
-It's beautiful, isn't it? -It is. Very nice. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
-It's so lovely. It's so lovely. -Oh, yes. Lovely. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:27
-Thank you so much. -Oh, my pleasure. -Thank you. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:30
-Thank you, darling. -My pleasure. Least we could do. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
God. Thank you. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:34
You know an awful lot happened in here. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:36
There's loads of work that's taken place in just a short space of time. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:39
I know, there's so much. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
The reason that's happened is because there's so many people | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
that heard what happened to you, and rushed around to help. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
-That's amazing. We're stunned. -And they're here | 0:26:47 | 0:26:50
-in your front garden. -Oh, my God. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:52
Really? Are they? | 0:26:52 | 0:26:53
I know they'd like to see you and say hello. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:56
-Of course. We want to see them. -Absolutely, and thank them so much. | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
-I'm sure you'd like to see them. -Of course. -Thank you so much. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:02
-From the bottom of my heart, it's absolutely gorgeous. -It is. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
It's so... It's absolutely stunning. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
Now, obviously there's a lot of people that made it possible | 0:27:10 | 0:27:14
to transform your house like that. So come on out, come on out, Amrit. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:18
Oh, my goodness. Thank you so much, everybody, | 0:27:18 | 0:27:20
it's amazing. Thank you so much. Thank you. It's gorgeous. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
I'm glad you love it. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:25
Wow! What a reaction. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:27
It just goes to show that with some goodwill | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
and an awful lot of elbow grease, you can genuinely turn those tears | 0:27:30 | 0:27:34
of sadness into those tears of joy | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
'I'm so happy that we've been able to help Amrit and Wendy. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:45
'And the police - well, they haven't given up, | 0:27:45 | 0:27:48
'and are still on the hunt for the criminals.' | 0:27:48 | 0:27:51
It's great on such a cold day that the community | 0:27:51 | 0:27:53
and these tradespeople have come out to help in relation to the burglary | 0:27:53 | 0:27:56
that's occurred, and I can reassure everyone that West Yorkshire Police | 0:27:56 | 0:28:00
are absolutely committed to driving down burglary offences. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
It's very intrusive, it's very personal, | 0:28:03 | 0:28:05
it affects people in different ways. But together I think we can crack it. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:08
-Give yourselves a round of applause. Well done. -Absolutely. 100%. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:12
