We're on the case of a crime that's committed once every 44 seconds - | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
burglary. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
Coming up... | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
I was shaking and crying. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
It's just shocking. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
We're with the police as they hunt down criminals. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
If you're a thief and you come to Hatton Gardens, you'll get caught. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
And if you handle stolen property from the proceeds of robberies and burglaries, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
we will come and find you. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
And we'll see the joy | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
when what's been stolen has been returned to its rightful owner. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
So beautiful. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
I really appreciate your work, everybody. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
-It's what we get paid to do. -Thank you. Thank you. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
In Shoeburyness in Essex, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
a woman has come home to find her house completely ransacked. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
I was so frightened, and it's shocking, you know. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
I just can't believe what happened to me. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
All my things upside down, especially in my bedroom, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
and all my things been taken away. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
This woman was the latest victim in a series of large-scale burglaries, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
targeting Chinese and Southeast Asian families. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
But her burglary would be the one that gave the police | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
the vital evidence needed to stop the crime spree. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
In a three-year stretch of offending, a team of two burglars | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
stole hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of precious jewellery and cash. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
DS Rob Kirby of Essex Police was brought in to investigate. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
The victim had been out all day and didn't return home until | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
about six o'clock in the evening. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
At which point, she contacted police. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
A significant amount of jewellery had been stolen. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
It eventually totalled over £90,000. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
It's the custom in many Chinese families | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
to buy expensive jewellery for a newborn. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
It's also passed on to sons and daughters when they marry. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
For this woman, the jewellery was of huge sentimental value. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
Many of the treasured possessions were presents from her parents. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
She was particularly distressed to have lost gold jewellery | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
she'd wanted to give to her children when they married, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
and the precious earrings she wore for her wedding to her late husband. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
I was very angry. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
How can somebody come to my house | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
and steal all my stuff just like that? | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
I think it is very...brutal, you know. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
Nearly 150 miles away in Lincolnshire, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
DC Martin Ryder had been investigating | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
a very similar spree of burglaries the year before. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
There was one weekend in October where we had | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
five burglary offences in Lincoln | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
where five Chinese families were targeted. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
That's too much of a coincidence. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
The distinctive thing about the offences was the nature of searches. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:22
They were ripping off bath panels. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
They were searching loft areas to houses, disturbing floorboards | 0:03:25 | 0:03:30
and absolutely turning rooms upside down. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
We had no forensic evidence, we had next to no witnesses. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
This is not common, this is not the norm. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
And for their victims coming home to that on that night, | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
it would have been a horrendous scene. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
This had all the flavours, to me, of somebody coming into Lincolnshire | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
from the outside, so we immediately started | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
looking beyond Lincoln. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
Martin soon realised these crimes had a lot in common | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
with those in Essex. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
The officers alerted the Chinese communities in both places | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
and reports came back of two white men with grey hair in smart suits, | 0:04:05 | 0:04:10
posing as businessmen. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
They would be friendly, but they'd ask unusual questions. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
Then, a breakthrough came when a man was visited | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
by one of the culprits. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
He became suspicious and he followed him to his car. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
The gentleman took down the registration number | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
and contacted Lincolnshire Police. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
The car was registered to a Paul White | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
who lived in Merseyside. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
They raided his home, and although they didn't catch him, | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
they found mobile phone records, bank statements and hotel receipts. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
All proved to be vital in making their case against him. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
We looked at where the phones had been. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
We looked at where financial transactions had taken place, | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
where he'd withdrawn money from his account, | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
where he'd deposited money from his account. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
That in itself, basically, gave us a dot-to-dot picture of movement. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:07
The hunt was now on to find Paul White. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
Police automatic number plate recognition cameras | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
and CCTV also helped plot his movements. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
His car was spotted more than 200 times as he travelled all over the country. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
At the time of this footage, he would have just committed | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
the five burglary offences in Lincoln. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
We can see in the footage that he's smartly dressed, shirt and tie. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
He would have come across completely legitimately as a businessman. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:41
Martin's team made enquiries with people close to their suspect. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:46
Paul White soon realised he wasn't going to shake the police | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
and eventually came in for questioning. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
When I asked him what he did, he said painter and decorator. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:56
"I'm on the dole and I've just done little jobs, that's it. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
"Just enough to get by." | 0:05:59 | 0:06:00
I asked him, "How much do you think you've earned in the last six months?" | 0:06:00 | 0:06:04
His reply was, "A few grand, low thousands." | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
I asked him when he came to Lincolnshire, who he came with. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
He replied, quite simply, "No-one." | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
So the person in the passenger seat was obviously a fiction of his imagination. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:20
He was being proven to be more and more dishonest | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
as we went through. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:25
The evidence was still circumstantial | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
so Martin's team had to release Paul White, | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
but they were now following his every move | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
and also looking for his accomplice. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
We'd established that within Paul White's phone | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
he'd got a contact called Uncle Peter. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
We looked at his relatives and we identified Uncle Peter, Peter White. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
Who, much to our surprise at that time, was on the run | 0:06:46 | 0:06:51
having failed to answer his bail at Crown Court | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
for a series of Chinese-targeted house burglaries | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
that Wiltshire Police had investigated. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
The picture just got bigger and bigger. Everything was fitting. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
Things are starting to come together. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
But will Martin and Rob find enough evidence to charge | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
both their suspects? | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
We'll find out later. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
Burglars will target jewellery whenever they find it. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
It's easy to carry and sell for quick cash. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
So police are always interested in clamping down on shops | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
willing to buy stolen valuables with no questions asked. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
After a spate of thefts of valuable watches, | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
Detective Superintendent Raffaele D'Orsi from the Metropolitan Police | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
is leading a raid to clamp down on the stolen goods market. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:45
Raffaele joined the force 25 years ago | 0:07:47 | 0:07:50
to catch burglars and robbers. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
It's exactly what he wants to do today. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
OK, what we're going to do now is we're going to take control | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
of the whole street, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:01
we'll take control of the locations, take control of the individuals | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
who run the specific premises we're looking to search. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
Then we'll progress our search once we're happy with control. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
He's sealing off Hatton Garden in London, | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
the UK's centre for the jewellery, gold and watch trade. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
There are hundreds of legitimate businesses in this area, | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
but amongst these honest dealers are a handful | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
willing to take in stolen goods to turn a handsome profit. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
The reason why we've come down here and closed the road | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
is to send a message to the whole of Hatton Gardens | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
that the police are aware there are offences occurring here | 0:08:36 | 0:08:40
on a daily basis. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
What we're doing here, I'm looking for stolen items | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
and I'm going to search you, OK? | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
So make sure you don't have any items of property on you | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
which might be stolen, OK? | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
What property have you got on you? Can I see it, please? | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
Yeah, course you can. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
This is a bit bad because... | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
But that's why you were drawn to our attention | 0:09:00 | 0:09:02
because of exactly that. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
This is actually really bad. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
Police want to separate legitimate dealers | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
from those who cannot account for what they're carrying. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
We've got an individual here who, from our own knowledge, | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
doesn't fit what's going on in the street. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
We've spoken to him, he may be a legitimate worker. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
He's telling us he's bringing jewellery from one shop to this shop. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
He doesn't have any paperwork in relation to that jewellery. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
Our difficulties with these sorts of operations is, | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
quite often, individuals don't carry the paperwork, | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
but officers are exercising those powers to identify if the property's stolen, | 0:09:36 | 0:09:41
or to identify if this could be a suspect who's bringing property | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
that are proceeds from crime to Hatton Gardens to sell. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:49
Without any paperwork for his jewellery, | 0:09:49 | 0:09:51
police arrest this man and take him in for more questioning. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
The offences are being committed across the Metropolitan Police area, | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
across London, but also across the UK. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
In recent weeks, we've intercepted individuals who were intending | 0:10:02 | 0:10:06
to come down to Hatton Gardens to sell their stolen and robbed watches. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
It's great to be able to go through the doors of those individuals | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
who have been purchasing the stolen goods | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
and providing a market place for these individuals to go out and commit those offences. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
For seasoned burglars, these fences provide them with the means to | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25
continue their trade, making it easy to dispose of their stolen items. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29
Often they'll be family heirlooms, passed down in generations, | 0:10:30 | 0:10:35
or there'll be people who worked damned hard to be able to afford | 0:10:35 | 0:10:40
to buy the watches. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
They range from £1,000, £2,000, all the way up to £20,000. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
Raffaele and his officers have now visited a number of premises | 0:10:47 | 0:10:51
and are starting to take away evidence. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
It's one building, but there's multiple jewellers and businesses in here. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:58
So the individuals seen behind us are innocent members of the public | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
and lawful jewellers who are going about their business. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:05
There is a premises which has been specifically searched and targeted, | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
because we believe them to be handling the proceeds of burglaries and robberies. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
If the owner has documentation for the watch, we'll leave it there. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
If they can't justify why they've got the watch and its history, | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
we've taken it. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:23
What we'll do is we'll have a look, compare it to our database | 0:11:23 | 0:11:28
of stolen watches, and if it's stolen, we'll move on from there. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
The team have taken away property with a potential value | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
of over £140,000. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:38
But DS Neil Johnstone wants everyone to know that this is not | 0:11:39 | 0:11:42
just about money, nor were these victimless crimes. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
Some of the thefts have been horrific. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
There have been people attacked in the street | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
and had watches ripped off their wrists. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
Some of the offences have been people in their own homes, | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
having people come through the door or through the windows | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
and having them taken from them whilst they're in the house. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
Really, really upsetting for them, and hopefully we can reunite | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
the property with the owner. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
That's the main aim, and that will be as satisfying as arresting somebody. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:12
The maximum sentence for handling stolen property | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
is actually the same as burglary itself - 14 years. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
The message has come quite clearly to everybody, | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
if you're a thief and you come to Hatton Gardens, you'll get caught. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:26
If you handle stolen property from the proceeds of robberies or burglaries | 0:12:26 | 0:12:30
we will come and find you. | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
And the police in Essex and Lincolnshire | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
are on the trail of jewellery thieves too. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
They're working on building a case against two members of the same family | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
suspected of carrying out burglaries throughout the UK, | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
targeting Chinese and Southeast Asian families. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:50
The men, Paul and Peter White, had a liking for luxury | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
and kept up their burglary spree to finance a lavish lifestyle, | 0:12:54 | 0:12:59
staying in expensive hotels and buying designer clothes. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:03
And for Paul White, the spending didn't end there. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
We noticed the fact he was affording foreign holidays, | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
that he was spending £1,100, £1,200, £1,300 a time on clothes. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:15
When somebody's a painter and decorator on £2-£3,000 a year, | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
the sums don't add up. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
But the jewellery thieves weren't invincible. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
Peter White was eventually caught by the police | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
after being on the run for several months. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
They proved that he'd been carrying out burglaries since at least 2008, | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
and he was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
for six burglaries in three counties. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
His nephew, Paul White, was still a free man. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
But to keep up his life of luxury, he carried on offending. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:47
His greed will take over. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
He will want to continue with this lifestyle and unless he's prepared | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
to work hard, he will need to commit more crime. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
All the investigating teams were on high alert and it wasn't long | 0:13:55 | 0:13:59
before Rob in Essex got a tip-off that Paul White was in his area. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:03
We established the hotel Paul White was staying at | 0:14:03 | 0:14:07
and we felt at that time there was a possibility that he may be in Essex | 0:14:07 | 0:14:11
to commit another burglary. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
Rob was right, and it wasn't long before another burglary occurred, | 0:14:13 | 0:14:18
this time, the final one, in Shoeburyness. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
Upstairs, everything was turned upside down. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
The drawers are out and there's such a mess. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
All my jewellery boxes were completely broken | 0:14:30 | 0:14:35
and all the things had been taken away. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
I instructed officers to go to the location we knew he was staying at | 0:14:41 | 0:14:46
in an attempt to try and locate any of the jewellery | 0:14:46 | 0:14:50
and arrest him for the offence. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
-Police officers! -Police! | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
Unfortunately, Paul had already left. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
It was a blow, but Rob knew that Paul White was due to | 0:15:03 | 0:15:07
appear in court in Lincoln the very next morning, | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
charged with stealing cash and jewellery from a former girlfriend. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:13
When he got to his hearing, | 0:15:13 | 0:15:15
White was promptly arrested for the burglaries as well. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
When he was in custody in Lincoln, | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
they searched the suspect and they found one item of jewellery on him, | 0:15:20 | 0:15:25
and we were able to speak to the victim in Essex | 0:15:25 | 0:15:28
who positively identified that item of jewellery as being hers. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:34
So, really good, strong evidence that linked him to that burglary. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:39
Paul White had finally slipped up. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
He'd forgotten all about that small, but important, piece of jewellery | 0:15:42 | 0:15:46
he'd hidden in his pocket. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:48
It was a gold pendant and was a cherished present | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
from the owner's father. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:53
Having finally caught up with their suspect, | 0:15:53 | 0:15:55
Martin and Rob both took the opportunity to interview Paul White. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
It's just a shame these people don't realise what these items of jewellery | 0:16:20 | 0:16:24
mean to the victims. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
It isn't about being paid out by insurance companies. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
It would have helped his case if he'd have assisted the police | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
in telling us where, what he'd done with the items. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35
The police now had their suspect and could link him | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
to at least one stolen item from Shoeburyness. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:42
All they wanted now was to prove that he was there | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
at the scene of the crime as well. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
The suspect was very thorough in that he often used to wear gloves, | 0:16:46 | 0:16:51
so we struggled to find fingerprints at the address. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:55
What we did find was a footprint on a piece of glass that he'd broken. | 0:16:55 | 0:17:00
This was forensically looked at and a comparison was made | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
to what footwear that could have come from. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
The police then searched the room where Paul White had recently been | 0:17:06 | 0:17:09
staying in Essex, and found exactly what they needed. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:13
We were able to positively identify the trainers found within the bedsit | 0:17:13 | 0:17:17
as being the trainers that left the footprint on the glass | 0:17:17 | 0:17:21
at the scene of the burglary. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:22
There was now strong evidence for the Shoeburyness burglary, | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
but the police also suspected he was responsible for a number of others. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:31
He's travelled the entire length and breadth of the country, | 0:17:32 | 0:17:36
and it so happened that every time there was a burglary | 0:17:36 | 0:17:40
with a Chinese victim, the suspect was in that area. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:44
The following day, he paid some money into his account. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:48
Every time he made a transaction, he was giving me more evidence. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:52
He was the master of his own undoing. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:54
Discover later what happens to Paul White | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
and if the victims are ever reunited with their precious jewellery. | 0:17:57 | 0:18:01
87% of people who've been burgled | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
say they've been emotionally affected by what happened. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
It's common to feel angry and shocked | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
and to be left feeling vulnerable in your own home. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
And that's something PCs Adam Broughton and Alex Dorlin | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
of South Yorkshire Police know all about. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
They're part of the Burglary Unit and they've been called | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
to an attempted break in just outside Rotherham. | 0:18:27 | 0:18:30
Alex joined the force seven-and-a-half years ago | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
after a career in the Royal Marines, | 0:18:33 | 0:18:35
and Adam's been an officer for nine years. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:38
He thinks hard-working people get a bad deal from criminals | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
and particularly cares about the elderly victims of burglary. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
Snow can be a hindrance to us, | 0:18:46 | 0:18:48
but sometimes it can help us with footprints, | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
so we'll bear that in mind when we're approaching the door. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:54
It were the lock that gave it away! | 0:18:54 | 0:18:57
Are these any of your footprints? | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
They're mine, I've been to the gas meter, yeah. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:04
-Were there any there before? -No. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:07
Unfortunately, the clear prints in the snow are not the burglar's, | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
but belong to the homeowner's daughter. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
Phillipa discovered the break in when she came to visit her mum, Jennifer. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:17
You only found it, didn't you? | 0:19:18 | 0:19:19
We were dashing to the doctor's this morning | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
and me daughter went out to take the meter reading. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:27
And then she came back and I heard her say, "Oh, my God!" | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
I said, "What's the matter?", and she said, "Somebody's tried to break in." | 0:19:30 | 0:19:35
-What time did you discover that? -Nine o'clock, yeah. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
Nine o'clock this morning. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:40
I mean, I have to admit, it's scared me stiff. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
I'm absolutely... I couldn't believe... | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
I was just...shaking like a leaf. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
The thing that's worrying, like my daughter just said, | 0:19:49 | 0:19:52
they'll probably come back tonight to finish it off. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:55
Which I shouldn't have said, it was a stupid thing to say in hindsight. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:59
I mean, we can't say they definitely won't come back, | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
but the chances are they won't because they know you'll find that, | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
and generally people, when stuff like this happens, | 0:20:07 | 0:20:11
they phone the police and they're more vigilant | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
and they get extra security. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
We've not had many burglaries in this area for a while, so... | 0:20:16 | 0:20:21
-Haven't you? -No, so it's not a crime hotspot. -No. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:25
It's just a bit of reassurance for you, you know. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:28
Burglars come through a door or window at the front | 0:20:28 | 0:20:32
of the house in just over half of all break ins. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
Older-style PVC doors are not as secure as newer models. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:39
Jennifer has been lucky because the thieves | 0:20:39 | 0:20:42
have not been able to completely break the lock. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:44
They've obviously removed the fascia here | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
and that exposes this locking barrel. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
But for some reason they haven't managed to snap it. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:53
You can see the tool marks at the side of the locking barrel. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
Once you've got a new lock on there, | 0:20:56 | 0:20:58
your door's going to be fairly secure. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:01
New anti-snap locks, they'll see the anti-snap locks | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
and they'll think there are easier targets out there and move on. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:11
When you get to 73, you don't want shocks like this. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:15
-Of course you don't. -They're not very good for you! | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
You don't want them at 23 or 73! | 0:21:18 | 0:21:20
My heart must be stronger than I thought it was. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:24
I'm sure once you've got the new lock on there | 0:21:25 | 0:21:27
and a new door, I'm sure that will be a bit of reassurance, won't it? | 0:21:27 | 0:21:32
A new lock will cost Jennifer about £20, but the attempted burglary | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
is not an experience she's likely to forget. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
It's just completely knocked the wind out of my sails. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:46
I just can't describe it. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
I was shaking and crying. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:50
Really, really, it's just, yeah, shocking. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
I am scared, but once I get the lock on, | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
I shall be fine. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:02
I'm not sure. Got a good family. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:04
They'll all rally round. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:08
-Thanks ever so much. -OK. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:12
We'll be in touch, Jennifer, all right? | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
This chain, I suppose this is rubbish anyway? | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
-It's worth putting on. I'd keep it on all the time. -Would you? | 0:22:17 | 0:22:21
You'll get a good lock sorted, won't you? | 0:22:21 | 0:22:23
-With that on as well, you'll be fine. -Thank you ever so much. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:27
I'd probably, you know this light here, | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
might be worth getting a nice modern light just to shine. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:33
My son gave me hell the other week. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:35
Very vintage that, in't it? | 0:22:35 | 0:22:37
It looks as though it's even older than me, don't it? | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
That saying, there aren't many things left older than me! | 0:22:40 | 0:22:44
It's a deterrent, in't it? | 0:22:44 | 0:22:46
Adam is always keen to give crime prevention advice, | 0:22:46 | 0:22:49
even to his own family. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
I'm always having a go at my parents and grandparents | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
to take extra security measures, but a bit of common sense, | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
a few lights, extra security on your doors, don't leave your doors open, | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
don't leave things on show, shut your curtains. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
Things like that, it's all basics. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:06
We just offer that simple advice to people, really. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:09
To do those little things, and you'll be surprised | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
what these little things do to prevent people targeting your address. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
Two prolific burglars, Paul White and his uncle, Peter, | 0:23:20 | 0:23:23
devastated families all over the UK when they stole | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
thousands of pounds worth of precious jewellery. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:30
Police nationwide worked together and tracked them down. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:34
In the burglaries that we were investigating, | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
I would estimate about half a million pounds worth of property | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
was stolen, and I can't say for certain what happened before that. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:44
But I'm fairly convinced these guys have been doing this | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
for a matter of years. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:48
So, naturally, I think these people are responsible for | 0:23:48 | 0:23:51
multimillion pounds worth of burglaries across the UK. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:54
Despite there being hundreds of pieces of jewellery still missing, | 0:23:56 | 0:24:00
and many pieces unclaimed, Martin has been able to recover | 0:24:00 | 0:24:04
a precious diamond pendant stolen from a house in Hampshire. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
He's on his way to reunite it with its rightful owner. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
-Hello. -Hello. -DC Rider. Are you well? | 0:24:17 | 0:24:19
Come in. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
The diamond pendant belongs to Deng Ji | 0:24:21 | 0:24:23
and was a present from her late mother. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
It's of huge sentimental value. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:28
I've had it for about 23 years. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:31
So beautiful. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
I'm happy to have got it back. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:37
I'm sad. Quite a lot of things that they took it from me. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:42
I've got my two granddaughters, | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
I've got nothing to give them because they took everything. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:49
Deng Ji and her husband Myint were burgled five years ago, | 0:24:50 | 0:24:54
but the trauma the break in caused hasn't left them. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
After that burglary happened, | 0:24:58 | 0:25:00
I'm so afraid. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
I check the door, front, back, every time. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:07
-And now, of course, it's all right now. -Time heals. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
-Oh, yeah, yeah. -Thankfully. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:13
The first couple of months, I am so afraid. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
I don't want to stay at home on my own. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
But thank you very much. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
I really appreciate your work, everybody. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
It's what we get paid to do. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
Thank you, thank you. I really appreciate it. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:27
And in Essex, DS Rob Kirby is also able to return some recovered | 0:25:29 | 0:25:33
jewellery to the victim of Paul White's Shoeburyness burglary. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:37
Missed them for long time. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:39
It's two years now, isn't it, nearly? | 0:25:39 | 0:25:41
Life has been tough since the burglary. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:44
She lost her only daughter in a car crash. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:47
And the treasured jewellery she intended to give her | 0:25:47 | 0:25:50
was stolen by Paul White. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
But at least the police can reunite her | 0:25:52 | 0:25:54
with one precious reminder of happier times - | 0:25:54 | 0:25:57
the earrings she wore on her wedding day to her late husband. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:01
-These are my wedding earrings. -Oh, your wedding earrings? | 0:26:01 | 0:26:05
Yeah, Chinese wear white in the Chinese tradition. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
-So, you wore these on your wedding day? -Yeah. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
These are my wedding day earrings. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:13
And something else was returned because Paul White had forgotten | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
all about a small piece of gold jewellery he'd stolen from her. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:20
He put it in his coat, so when he was arrested, | 0:26:20 | 0:26:24
-we searched him and that was in his pocket. -Very good. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:27
-So, erm... -I'm very pleased to know that lead to his arrest. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:31
-Yeah, yeah. -Very good. Very good. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
The owner could now be reunited with the precious gold pendant | 0:26:36 | 0:26:39
she'd been given by her father. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
I feel really pleased. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
He has been arrested and put in jail. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
So, you know, I feel a bit comforted, you know. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:51
You know, and really good job, you know. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:55
I'm very pleased. Very good. Thank you so much. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:59
It's not often we're able to return some items to the victim, | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
so it's been really nice to be able to do that. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:06
And just to see the look on her face is just priceless. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:10
It's moments like that why you join the police in the first place. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
It's been great. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:15
There's just time for an update on today's stories. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
After the attempted break in at her house near Rotherham, | 0:27:20 | 0:27:24
Jennifer tightened her security and changed the locks on her front door. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:28
But she's been so deeply affected by what happened | 0:27:28 | 0:27:31
that she's decided to move. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:33
After the Hatton Garden police raid, | 0:27:34 | 0:27:36
a further four arrests have been made | 0:27:36 | 0:27:38
and the investigation is ongoing. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:40
And in the nationwide hunt for the prolific burglars Paul and Peter White, | 0:27:42 | 0:27:46
the police eventually got both their men. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:49
On the 28th November 2012, | 0:27:49 | 0:27:51
Paul White was sentenced to seven years and four months in prison | 0:27:51 | 0:27:55
for a series of nine burglaries. | 0:27:55 | 0:27:58
His uncle, Peter White, | 0:27:58 | 0:27:59
who was already serving four-and-a-half years in prison, | 0:27:59 | 0:28:02
was given an additional six years for his part in four burglaries. | 0:28:02 | 0:28:07
We'll see you next time. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:09
