Hi, I'm Sam. Here's our check on the global news channels. | :00:03. | :00:07.
"Battleground Gaza" was the RT headline. They were one of many to | :00:07. | :00:10.
lead on the renewed Middle East violence. Fox had a dramatic | :00:10. | :00:13.
eyewitness report from Israel as rockets landed. | :00:13. | :00:16.
China's CCTV introduced viewers to the country's new generation of | :00:16. | :00:20.
leaders, or, as Japan's NHK put it, their "new cheese". Xi Jinping now | :00:20. | :00:24.
leads the communist party. A warning about energy drinks on | :00:24. | :00:27.
ABC: officials are looking into claims that they are linked to | :00:27. | :00:31.
thirteen deaths. 5-hour Energy told them it only had the same caffeine | :00:31. | :00:33.
as a coffee. CNN asked, "Where's John McAfee?" | :00:33. | :00:37.
They were live in Belize. Police want to question the internet | :00:37. | :00:40.
security boss about the killing of a neighbour. The PM called him | :00:40. | :00:42.
bonkers. And Zlatan Ibrahimovic's amazing | :00:42. | :00:46.
goal was big in Sweden. TV4 said it wouldn't even be in a Hollywood | :00:46. | :00:51.
script. The man himself told SVT he felt the bicycle kick was his best | :00:51. | :00:53.
ever. Stay with Three now for Superstorm | :00:53. | :01:03.

It's just before 6pm on Monday October 29, 16-year-old John Mateer | :02:11. | :02:15.
is about to record the superstorm which will hit his neighbourhood. | :02:15. | :02:20.
It's crazy. You see a face up against the glass. In a moment John | :02:20. | :02:26.
will film images that will become world famous. Oh, my God. Oh, my | :02:26. | :02:36.
| :02:36. | :02:43. | ||
God. Oh! Oh, my God. Shit, our tree. It hit your car. Oh, my God. It hit | :02:43. | :02:48.
my car. Oh, that car! The footage of the largest Atlantic superstorm | :02:48. | :02:56.
on record captured by those who witnessed it. From the Caribbean to | :02:56. | :03:01.
the major cities of America's East Coast, this was the first natural | :03:01. | :03:05.
disaster documented on personal phones and video cameras before, | :03:05. | :03:15.
| :03:15. | :03:22. | ||
Hurricane Sandy! Within moments of being recorded, images were | :03:22. | :03:28.
uploaded for all the world to see. We asked people who recorded them | :03:28. | :03:33.
to allow us to use their videos to show what happened from the | :03:33. | :03:37.
eyewitness point of view. With their cooperation and combined with | :03:37. | :03:41.
the footage we've shot ourselves, this is how Superstorm Sandy, one | :03:41. | :03:47.
of the biggest storms ever to hit the USA, was kaugtd on camera. | :03:47. | :03:51.
I'm going to film the individual quo for you, so you see the | :03:51. | :03:54.
devastation just a block from my house. This street is totally | :03:54. | :04:04.
| :04:04. | :04:09. | ||
blocked and the cars are pretty I'm Scott McPartland and I've been | :04:09. | :04:16.
storm chasing since I was 13 years old. You can clearly see the | :04:16. | :04:23.
rotation. Clearly see it. It's kicking up a heck of a lot of dust. | :04:23. | :04:27.
Over the years my fascination of storms has grown into what is | :04:27. | :04:31.
essentially a career for me now. This is what we're protecting from | :04:31. | :04:38.
right here. This fell like two minutes ago, easily a three-inch | :04:38. | :04:47.
hail stone, super spiky - whoa, I didn't see that! As well as being | :04:47. | :04:52.
one of America's most famous storm chasers, Scott McPartland is | :04:52. | :04:56.
meriorologist. When the superstorm was first detected he was on the | :04:56. | :05:02.
case. I remember a week out, some of the forecast models were showing | :05:02. | :05:07.
a hit in the mid-Atlantic and north-east. This was completely | :05:07. | :05:11.
outlandish at the time. Nobody had seen anything like that. Haiti, in | :05:11. | :05:16.
the Caribbean, was first to feel the effects. Flooding killed 52 | :05:16. | :05:26.
| :05:26. | :05:34. | ||
people, caused food shortages and The superstorm headed north, the | :05:34. | :05:39.
next day, October 23, the Bahamas issued a tropical storm watch and | :05:39. | :05:44.
at 3pm sandy was upgraded to hurricane status. Two people died | :05:44. | :05:47.
and the structural damage is estimated to run into many millions | :05:47. | :05:54.
of dollars. By this time, when Sandy was in the Bahamas, she was | :05:54. | :05:58.
growing substantially. The storm was huge. I believe at one point | :05:58. | :06:07.
almost a thousand miles wide. after 5am, on October 25, Hurricane | :06:07. | :06:11.
Sandy twisted and made landfall in Cuba's second biggest city, | :06:11. | :06:21.
| :06:21. | :06:23. | ||
Vanessa and Kieran Ash, both 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, were getting | :06:23. | :06:28.
married at the tourist resort of Guardalavaca and had taken 17 | :06:28. | :06:38.
| :06:38. | :06:42. | ||
Everybody started to panic a bit, especially when you could see the | :06:42. | :06:44.
really dark, grey clouds with the rain in the distance coming over | :06:44. | :06:53.
the hills. Told to go to their rooms, Vanessa and her husband and | :06:53. | :06:56.
two-year-old daughter, took refuge in the bathroom. The wind was | :06:56. | :07:00.
roaring around the building. You could hear is swooshing through the | :07:00. | :07:04.
vents and you could hear the wind hitting things against the wall. I | :07:04. | :07:11.
think that was the scariest part. We felt scared for our lives is the | :07:11. | :07:16.
best way to describe it. I went to the patio door windows and peaked | :07:16. | :07:20.
round the curtain. The glass was bending and creeking. Soy got my | :07:20. | :07:24.
mobile phone and the camcorder wand as getting footage to remember | :07:24. | :07:28.
exactly what we had gone through. I hid behind the curtains for about | :07:28. | :07:32.
ten seconds and ran back into the room because I was so terrified | :07:32. | :07:40.
that the window was going to come through. | :07:40. | :07:43.
Next day, Vanessa films the damage, the hotel was flooded and there was | :07:43. | :07:50.
destruction everywhere. Normally these storms when they start, | :07:50. | :07:54.
especially this late in the season, they ride up the East Coast. You | :07:54. | :07:57.
have a cold front that's swinging through the east, picks it up and | :07:57. | :08:05.
sends her safely out to sea. At sea, the storm caught up with the Disney | :08:05. | :08:08.
Fantasy, cruising the Atlantic, 2,000 passengers, many of whom | :08:08. | :08:18.
| :08:18. | :08:21. | ||
recorded the action and uploaded it Hurricane Sandy on our Disney | :08:21. | :08:29.
Fantasy Cruise 2012. We're in the middle of the ocean. Not a fun day | :08:29. | :08:39.
| :08:39. | :08:42. | ||
to be on a boat. Ready for the hurricane? Yeah! Ready, go! Whoa! | :08:42. | :08:52.
| :08:52. | :08:57. | ||
When this footage was uploaded many believed the ship had take anyone | :08:57. | :09:02.
sea water, but it was actually water from the indoor paddling pool | :09:02. | :09:08.
being tossed and turned by the hurricane. Online, this video was | :09:08. | :09:18.
| :09:18. | :09:22. | ||
presented by swuesswuesswues aged eight from Florida. Last night, we | :09:22. | :09:25.
went through a hurricane. The gift shops are all messed up. All the | :09:25. | :09:35.
| :09:35. | :09:36. | ||
toys are on the floor. Also the desks. I was surprised because a | :09:36. | :09:41.
really big desk was here. Even in the jewellery shops. All the | :09:41. | :09:50.
jewellery fell too. Over here. It was very hard last night. Can you | :09:50. | :09:57.
see over here, a bunch of presents fell, like a whole rack on the | :09:57. | :10:02.
floor. You can see back over there, you'll get a better view this way, | :10:02. | :10:08.
back there, you could see that all the watches and necklaces and all | :10:08. | :10:14.
crammed up in there. Most of the things broke and that's what | :10:14. | :10:19.
happened on the Disney cruise last night. The other thing with | :10:19. | :10:24.
Hurricane Sandy that prevented her from going safely out to sea was we | :10:24. | :10:27.
had another storm in the North Atlantic Hurricane Tony, blocking | :10:27. | :10:31.
her escape. This was what was going to pull her back towards the East | :10:31. | :10:36.
Coast. What ended up happening was kind of a guide track that pulled | :10:36. | :10:41.
her straight up and this trough of low pressure phased with her and | :10:41. | :10:45.
pulled her into the Jersey coastline. This was something we've | :10:45. | :10:49.
never seen before. The phasing of these two systems was going to | :10:49. | :10:54.
ininject a large amount of energy into Sandy. In turn, she would grow | :10:54. | :10:58.
into a superstorm. As the superstorm approached, the | :10:58. | :11:04.
authorities began to issue warnings. We should plan to see heavy rain | :11:04. | :11:09.
that lasts for 36 hours once the storm starts to hit, flooding is | :11:09. | :11:13.
very real and serious concern. The hard reality is even if we do | :11:13. | :11:19.
everything, we can't stop the storm. Continuing to move north on October | :11:19. | :11:26.
28th, the first winds and rain hit Hatteras Island, a narrow strip | :11:26. | :11:29.
reaching from North Carolina into the Atlantic. A local estate agent | :11:29. | :11:33.
recorded the storm's arrival. can almost see it through the | :11:33. | :11:43.
| :11:43. | :11:44. | ||
It's just eating away the sand right there. | :11:44. | :11:50.
We're dough to try to get up there at some point. We're worried about | :11:50. | :11:56.
downed power lines and typical hazards. This way, over my shoulder, | :11:56. | :12:05.
looks deeper towards waves. But I'm going to try to give you a look at | :12:05. | :12:08.
the ocean. Let's see if we can see the waves coming through. Those are | :12:09. | :12:14.
the waves coming through. Those are pretty big. Really big. | :12:14. | :12:18.
It's hard to nail down exactly where it would come ashore. But it | :12:18. | :12:21.
didn't matter because the storm was so massive everybody was going to | :12:21. | :12:31.
| :12:31. | :12:32. | ||
As the superstorm threatened a warning message from the President | :12:32. | :12:39.
himself. This is a serious and big storm. My first message is to all | :12:39. | :12:44.
the people across the eastern sea board, mid-Atlantic, going north | :12:44. | :12:46.
board, mid-Atlantic, going north that you need to take this very | :12:46. | :12:55.
seriously. Regardless of the warnings many people went out to | :12:55. | :13:05.
| :13:05. | :13:05. | ||
the coast to record their own piece of history. There was complacency | :13:05. | :13:09.
because we didn't have anything to pull from and say, remember how bad | :13:09. | :13:17.
it was last time? There was no last time. Of course, had you all these | :13:17. | :13:23.
people, I call them the looky-loos. They want to come out and see it. | :13:23. | :13:28.
It was very hard to get that point across, because I had heard time | :13:28. | :13:33.
and again stories like "Well I've been here for 45 years. It's never | :13:33. | :13:43.
| :13:43. | :13:44. | ||
been as bad as they say it's going to be." Cheese! Say Hurricane | :13:44. | :13:54.
| :13:54. | :13:55. | ||
Some people taking on the turbulent ocean was too good a photo | :13:55. | :14:02.
opportunity to miss. Reckless out there, man. I don't even feel cold | :14:02. | :14:06.
now. I think it's the hypothermia kicking in. | :14:06. | :14:16.
| :14:16. | :14:31. | ||
That's what I live for, hurricanes like this, hurricanes like | :14:31. | :14:41.
| :14:41. | :14:42. | ||
Hurricane Sandy. On Long Island, New York, John | :14:42. | :14:46.
Mateer and his sister were like many others. They thought they'd | :14:46. | :14:51.
heard all the scare stories before. I actually wasn't expecting much. I | :14:51. | :14:55.
wasn't here for Hurricane Irene. I was at college. I have never | :14:55. | :14:59.
experienced anything like this before. Me and my friends were | :14:59. | :15:03.
texting about what we might do tonight. We weren't prepared at all. | :15:03. | :15:06.
We were preparing for like the power to be out for like, I don't | :15:06. | :15:11.
know, two days, I don't know. weren't preparing for destruction. | :15:11. | :15:16.
To give you an example, people were posting, I was one of those people, | :15:16. | :15:20.
I posted on Twitter, like "Thanks for the day off. Nothing's | :15:20. | :15:23.
happening." The wind was blowing. There was no rain ierblg. It was | :15:23. | :15:33.
| :15:33. | :15:34. | ||
getting dark. Nothing bad was We are going to have a very, very | :15:34. | :15:41.
large area affected by strong winds, a storm fall and heavy rainfall. | :15:41. | :15:45.
We should not underestimate the impact of the storm or assume that | :15:45. | :15:52.
predictions will be wrong. I know, probably through all my life too, | :15:52. | :15:57.
people will be saying that this is not going to happen. That the | :15:57. | :16:02.
weathermen do get it wrong. That we will hang out and pay attention to | :16:02. | :16:06.
this. Please, don't. Be prepared for the worst. | :16:06. | :16:12.
By now the superstorm had killed up to 70 people. On the ground people | :16:12. | :16:17.
had filmed floods and structural damage. The superstorm was heading | :16:17. | :16:27.
| :16:27. | :16:29. | ||
for the world famous Jersey Shore with winds speeds of up to 80mph. | :16:29. | :16:35.
Five days now... Filming it all was New Jersey's most prolific social | :16:35. | :16:40.
media blogger, Alexander Higgins, with more than 3 million viewers on | :16:40. | :16:47.
his YouTube channel. This is Alexander Higgins, I am on | :16:47. | :16:52.
Bridge Avenue. The first I heard of this was online. We are here at the | :16:53. | :16:57.
Napa Auto Centre. You can see that Hurricane Sandy is here. This roof | :16:57. | :17:03.
is continuing to blow off under the force of the winds. We have | :17:03. | :17:07.
widespread destruction from the winds in Point Pleasant. | :17:07. | :17:13.
Across the road we can see that the shingles are blowing off. I went | :17:13. | :17:18.
down to different disaster point areas to collect videos and photos | :17:18. | :17:24.
to put online. Here we are at the Pizza Hut. This is Brick Boulevard. | :17:24. | :17:34.
| :17:34. | :17:34. | ||
We have another downed tree here. Trees are down everywhere. | :17:34. | :17:41.
As he videoed more evidence that the superstorm had hit New Jersey, | :17:41. | :17:48.
Alexander Higgins posted it on line. We are here on Bridge Avenue in | :17:48. | :17:52.
Bayhead. This telephone wire pole here, we have sparks flying off it. | :17:52. | :17:58.
As you can see, there is a tree down right here. This is just | :17:58. | :18:06.
across the entire road. These wires right here are flapping off of the | :18:06. | :18:11.
telephone pole. Sparks are flying off this wire. | :18:11. | :18:15.
Now this is a big tree that has been uprooted right here in front | :18:15. | :18:24.
of us. With Sandy, the disaster is | :18:24. | :18:30.
imminent. You see it coming ashore it is my responsibility to let | :18:30. | :18:32.
others know that this is heading their way. | :18:32. | :18:38.
I just really felt that I had to let people know on Twitter or | :18:38. | :18:43.
Facebook that by this time tomorrow your house is going to be under | :18:43. | :18:53.
| :18:53. | :19:05. | ||
water. To get out of there now, to This YouTube user posted videos of | :19:05. | :19:10.
a flooded street in Bayhead, New Jersey. His grandmother, aunts and | :19:10. | :19:14.
cousin were stranded. Canoes were used for rescue missions. | :19:14. | :19:20.
If you are still able to hear me, we need you to hunker down and get | :19:20. | :19:25.
to the highest point possible in the dwelling you are in. We cannot | :19:25. | :19:33.
help until day light tomorrow. Defences were going up in Manhattan, | :19:33. | :19:36.
New York. North of New Jersey, the storm had not reached yet, but | :19:36. | :19:43.
people were taking precautions and filming the drama. | :19:43. | :19:53.
| :19:53. | :19:56. | ||
I was going to walk into the shop Trader Joe's, then I saw the line. | :19:57. | :20:02.
This is unusual. This is about 12.00pm. There is a | :20:02. | :20:08.
line around the block for Trader Joe's to get into the store. You | :20:08. | :20:12.
would think there was a rock concert going on in there. There is | :20:12. | :20:16.
not. For a quality of video stand-point, | :20:16. | :20:21.
it is dreadful, but it tell as story of a long line of people and | :20:21. | :20:26.
even a Trader Joe's employee, helping people, so they were not on | :20:26. | :20:31.
the path of other people on the sidewalk. It was impulsive to get | :20:31. | :20:37.
that shock. I am glad that I did. A lot of people are watching. | :20:37. | :20:42.
We had a lot of lead time. I am Anthony da Rosa. There was at least | :20:42. | :20:46.
a day or two days when people were going through how they were going | :20:46. | :20:50.
to prepare for this storm. People were stocking up on food, talking | :20:50. | :20:54.
about how the stores that they were going to was running out of items. | :20:54. | :21:01.
So there are a lot of phonows on the videos of the panic beforehand. | :21:01. | :21:04.
Of people trying to get material that they could have in their homes | :21:05. | :21:10.
before the storm. Getting candles, flashlights, food. | :21:10. | :21:15.
Why is this empty? What happened? There are no eggs, what happened? | :21:15. | :21:23.
It is because of the Hurricane Sandy. Have you got milk? Oh, my | :21:24. | :21:30.
God! By 5pm the bread was gone. Where is the bread? The bread is | :21:31. | :21:36.
gone! One man went on to YouTube to proudly explain he was prepared for | :21:36. | :21:40.
the worst. This is on my phone, I wanted to | :21:40. | :21:46.
make a video. I have candles there. Batteries, always need those things. | :21:46. | :21:51.
Zippo fluid for my Zippo as you always need to make fire. Water. | :21:51. | :21:56.
You know it is really unlikely that something will happen with the | :21:56. | :22:00.
regular water, but it is better to be safe than sorry. It sounds like | :22:00. | :22:05.
it could be a pretty serious storm. So here we go, a bunch of stuff you | :22:05. | :22:10.
don't have to cook to eat. Especially for me, you know canned | :22:10. | :22:16.
stuff. I have an electric stove so, if the power goes out I will not be | :22:16. | :22:21.
able to cook everything. Also I got charcoal to cook after the storm | :22:21. | :22:27.
has passed, if the need be. I have to get out of here. I am getting | :22:27. | :22:32.
seawater in the engine. Scott McPartland was following the storm | :22:32. | :22:35.
and witnessed neighbourhoods fighting a losing battle. | :22:35. | :22:43.
We drove up to Bayside in Queens. There, there were neighbourhoods | :22:43. | :22:47.
under water. That is when I thought this is going to be terrible. This | :22:47. | :22:53.
was ten hours away from the storm. Then we knew that this would be bad. | :22:53. | :23:00.
The outlying areas of New York City began to feel the first effects of | :23:00. | :23:07.
the superstorm on October 29th. This was Breezy Point on the Bore | :23:07. | :23:11.
accounting of Queens on the Atlantic coast. | :23:11. | :23:21.
| :23:21. | :23:25. | ||
People were trying to catch their own moment of Superstorm Sandy. | :23:26. | :23:33.
Breezy Point is part of the Rockaway particular, it is home to | :23:33. | :23:38.
many Irish immigrants, so many it is known as the Irish Riviera. In | :23:38. | :23:42.
this bar, the customers did not look like they were worried too | :23:42. | :23:52.
much about the building superstorm. Have a pot where there is a drip... | :23:52. | :24:00.
To miles along the coast in Wantagh, 16-year-old John Mateer was told to | :24:00. | :24:05.
take the day off school. From here, I saw the wind blowing. | :24:05. | :24:11.
I was standing here with my camera. Filming the wind. I am used to | :24:11. | :24:15.
filming stuff and sending it to people and joke being it. I film a | :24:15. | :24:20.
lot of stuff. I was just pulling it out to film the gust of wind and | :24:20. | :24:30.
| :24:30. | :24:36. | ||
possibly send it to a friend. This is the apocalypse! Oh, shit! That | :24:36. | :24:42.
creeped me out. Did you see a face? It was up against the glass. | :24:42. | :24:52.
| :24:52. | :24:56. | ||
That's when mayhem struck. Oh, my God. Oh, my God! Oh! Oh, my | :24:56. | :25:06.
| :25:06. | :25:08. | ||
God. Shit, our tree! It hit your car. Oh, my God. It hit my car?! | :25:08. | :25:18.
| :25:18. | :25:21. | ||
got that all on film. Oh, my God! What happened? The car got crushed. | :25:21. | :25:31.
| :25:31. | :25:34. | ||
What? Oh, my gosh! You're lucky. Erin... Your car bounced, though. | :25:34. | :25:37.
The back is completely destroyed, John. | :25:37. | :25:42.
I was in shock. Then it hit me we should not be by the wind we are at | :25:42. | :25:48.
all. There is a fire, Dad! Oh, my gosh! | :25:48. | :25:51.
There ain't nothing that I can do about that. OK, get away from the | :25:51. | :25:56.
trees. I got that all on film, you guys. | :25:56. | :26:04.
Oh, my gosh! Show me that video! Here is a satellite image of | :26:04. | :26:07.
Hurricane Sandy just prior to landing. About four or five hours | :26:07. | :26:13.
before. The first thing that you notice is how huge this is. It | :26:13. | :26:18.
literally takes up the entire screen. | :26:18. | :26:23.
A time lapse camera captured the superstorm sweeping towards | :26:23. | :26:29.
Manhattan Island and the rain arriving. The USA's commercial and | :26:29. | :26:35.
cultural capital, 1.5 million people crammed into 23 square miles. | :26:35. | :26:41.
The New York Stock Exchange closed, thousands had fled and many more | :26:41. | :26:48.
had locked themselves behind doors, but some were out filming. Here, a | :26:48. | :26:56.
drain was swaying dangerously. In a nearby hotel, robin and Lou Gillard | :26:56. | :27:01.
were recording this message. You have to evacuate the building. | :27:01. | :27:08.
Due to the possibility that the crane up the street, above the | :27:08. | :27:14.
construction site might fall. So, please, in an orderly manner, make | :27:14. | :27:19.
your way to the nearest staircase and exit the building through the | :27:19. | :27:29.
| :27:29. | :27:31. | ||
hotel lobby. But then part of the crane crashed. | :27:31. | :27:38.
The hotel told people to stay indoors. Then Lou was heading | :27:38. | :27:48.
| :27:48. | :28:19. | ||
The levels along the coasts and along the waterways began to rise. | :28:20. | :28:23.
They were expected to remain at higher than normal levels for the | :28:23. | :28:28.
next 24 hours. The surge will be about 8.00pm tonight, plus or minus | :28:29. | :28:33.
a couple of hours. Michele Mitchell went out in the | :28:33. | :28:36.
storm to record images on her mobile phone. | :28:36. | :28:44.
I ran into folks on the Upper West Side, and they said that they | :28:44. | :28:47.
watched the video. She remembers the moment when the | :28:47. | :28:53.
city started to lose power and the seawater surged. | :28:53. | :28:57.
I realised that electricity was not working. The Wi-Fi had gone. The | :28:57. | :29:07.
| :29:07. | :29:12. | ||
cable had gone. Then I could hear a Mac truck coming down the street... | :29:12. | :29:16.
I kept looking alt Downtown Manhattan, so all of this went dark. | :29:16. | :29:26.
| :29:26. | :29:27. | ||
This was the moment when the lights went out in Downtown Manhattan. It | :29:27. | :29:32.
was 8.30pm. A electricity substation explodes after it fills | :29:33. | :29:36.
with seawater. We stood outside and could watch | :29:36. | :29:46.
| :29:46. | :29:47. | ||
the transformers blowing up. What is going on? I don't know what | :29:47. | :29:52.
is going on? What is this? Something just exploded. | :29:52. | :30:02.
| :30:02. | :30:04. | ||
It looked like a bomb was hitting On 14th street Brian Trombley | :30:04. | :30:09.
leaned out of the window of his sixth-floor apartment to capture | :30:09. | :30:17.
footage of the storm hitting Downtown Manhattan. Whoa! Shit. | :30:18. | :30:24.
What just happened? What just happened? Next door, the same | :30:24. | :30:34.
| :30:34. | :30:37. | ||
collapse was also filmed by Mark Oh, my gosh. There is no wall for | :30:37. | :30:47.
| :30:47. | :30:52. | ||
these apartments. No F-ing walls on No heat, no power, no water. The | :30:52. | :30:56.
buildings started loseing water pressure. In many cases you were | :30:56. | :31:00.
camping in your apartments. It became deserted. If you had the | :31:00. | :31:04.
means to get out, you did. It looked like it was something out of | :31:04. | :31:10.
that movie I Am Legend. It was completely deserted. The camera | :31:10. | :31:13.
recorded candles and flash lights appearing in the buildings at the | :31:13. | :31:18.
bottom of the shot. When I went to shoot the video at my neighbourhood | :31:18. | :31:28.
| :31:28. | :31:30. | ||
restaurant, I walk in and there they were. Bonjour Michel, c'estVa. | :31:30. | :31:37.
There was Michel serving hamburgers. What power are you use sning Gas. - | :31:37. | :31:44.
- Using? Gas. How many people have you served today? This is | :31:44. | :31:54.
| :31:54. | :31:55. | ||
incredible. I don't know. It's OK. On the night of the storm nothing | :31:55. | :32:00.
was working. But I had a crank radio. I left my house and had the | :32:00. | :32:03.
radio with me. I was cranking it and listening to the records on the | :32:03. | :32:07.
radio of what had been going on. That was the most useful technology | :32:07. | :32:13.
that I had when the power went out. Surging sea water flooded all ten | :32:13. | :32:19.
tunnels between Manhattan, Brooklyn and Long Island. The flooding of | :32:19. | :32:29.
| :32:29. | :32:29. | ||
mid-town tunnel was filmed by Louis Bejarano. I'm in the news business. | :32:29. | :32:34.
Until I got on the streets and shot these streets of Soho, and people | :32:34. | :32:37.
showing ingenious ways of getting their businesses up and running, | :32:37. | :32:41.
you didn't see those stories. You started to see it more in | :32:41. | :32:44.
mainstream media. Social media shaped the coverage of this | :32:44. | :32:54.
| :32:54. | :32:54. | ||
disaster. There were nearly 15,000 emergency calls to the New York | :32:54. | :33:00.
Fire Department. Ten times the usual number. Social media, Twitter | :33:00. | :33:05.
and Facebook were monitored throughout and played a vital role. | :33:05. | :33:15.

27Th Street. I'm Emily Rahini, the social media manager for the fire | :33:15. | :33:19.
department. It's ten social media channels. Most of it is focused on | :33:19. | :33:25.
Facebook, Twitter and U tube. It was busy that night. I'd leave my | :33:25. | :33:31.
desk for two mib its and come back to 150tweets. This woman says her | :33:31. | :33:34.
parents are trapped in their home on Staten Island. I contacted | :33:34. | :33:44.
| :33:44. | :33:46. | ||
dispatchers to make sure that they 200 firefighters were called to | :33:46. | :33:49.
Breezy Point in Queen's where just hours earlier residents had posed | :33:49. | :33:56.
for photographs and drunk in the bar as storms lashed the seafront. | :33:56. | :34:00.
There was 25 civilians on the roof of the building. The fire was | :34:00. | :34:05.
spreading? The fire was in the two- storey building next door. It was | :34:05. | :34:15.
| :34:15. | :34:18. | ||
When dawn broke and the fires were finally put out, this was all that | :34:18. | :34:23.
was left of Breezy Point. An electrical fault was blamed for the | :34:23. | :34:33.
| :34:33. | :34:38. | ||
This high-definition video was shot by Roy Currlin, an Irish man who | :34:38. | :34:48.
| :34:48. | :34:53. | ||
Roy doesn't expect to be able to move back into his home for six | :34:53. | :35:03.
months. Also gone, 2,700 more houses, all flooded out. The | :35:03. | :35:08.

landfall. Most of the iconic boardwalk, America's first and more | :36:02. | :36:10.
than 140 years old, had been smashed to pieces. Land marks made | :36:10. | :36:14.
famous by TV series such as boardwalk empire were reduced to | :36:14. | :36:24.

Scott McPartland went filming. that boat was initially over here | :36:48. | :36:56.
and then was swept up. You can see the foundation right here. Oh, yes. | :36:56. | :37:01.
House shifted to the left. You can see everything under here, all the | :37:01. | :37:05.
water, the pipes broke up there. Literally when the storm surge came | :37:05. | :37:08.
in, obviously it moved this boat. This was not the originally | :37:08. | :37:13.
location of this boat. It literally moved the foundation or moved the | :37:13. | :37:20.
house off its foundation. Several feet off its foundation. You look | :37:21. | :37:25.
at the damage to the coastline, it's tremendous and so widespread. | :37:25. | :37:31.
You know, boardwalks decimated. Homes decimated. There are boats in | :37:31. | :37:41.
| :37:41. | :37:42. | ||
the middle of the street. Boats in the middle of people's homes. A | :37:42. | :37:51.
boat has landed. Amazing, DJ Gerano recording this. Look at this, | :37:51. | :37:54.
another boat, jet ski, amazing, looks like a war zone out here, | :37:54. | :37:59.
ladies and gentleman, a war zone. There's so much devastation, it's | :37:59. | :38:03.
comparable to any Hurricane I've ever seen. A lot of things came | :38:03. | :38:07.
together to make Sandy the storm she was. The size of the storm, the | :38:07. | :38:12.
size of the wind field, the amount of water that was being pushed, the | :38:12. | :38:15.
phasing with the system that was coming through the midwest and into | :38:15. | :38:18.
the east and the all important track. You put those things | :38:18. | :38:22.
together and then you tack on a full moon on p to -- top of that, | :38:22. | :38:29.
worst case scenario. A scenario of rising tides of torrential rain | :38:29. | :38:35.
meant devastating floods along the East Coast of the USA. At Hatteras | :38:35. | :38:42.
Island the estate agents ventured out with cameras again. This is | :38:42. | :38:49.
Kurt and Jason recording with Outer Beaches Realty. This is caisy out | :38:49. | :38:55.
here. Actually we made -- crazy out here. Actually we made our way to | :38:55. | :39:01.
the Green Lantern, the first house on the right. It leaves us | :39:01. | :39:04.
speechless. So we're just going to go ahead and show you what we see | :39:04. | :39:14.
| :39:14. | :39:34. | ||
We are in ocean City New Jersey. Several people on this block have | :39:34. | :39:40.
indeed stayed. Oh, looks like Chris's car is totally under water | :39:40. | :39:50.
down there. High tide should be going down. The streets are totally | :39:50. | :40:00.
| :40:00. | :40:02. | ||
gone. And our steps... Under the house. The water finds a way. Water | :40:02. | :40:07.
finds a way in. It will do what it wants. It will go where it wants. | :40:07. | :40:10.
It doesn't care about your personal belongings or this you just bought | :40:10. | :40:15.
or that you just bought. It's going to wreck everything. On Staten | :40:15. | :40:19.
Island, when the water was too dangerous Forres cue boats, Pablo | :40:20. | :40:29.
| :40:30. | :40:36. | ||
Cruz, a Mexican, filmed people Holy shit. Located at the back of | :40:36. | :40:46.
| :40:46. | :40:55. | ||
New York harbour, Staten Island had 21 people died on Staten Island, | :40:55. | :40:59.
mostly through drowning. Half the total number of those killed by the | :40:59. | :41:09.
| :41:09. | :41:22. | ||
New York City closed its 468 subway stations during the assume storm. | :41:22. | :41:28.
But that didn'tston the flooding. When the 14-foot storm surge hit | :41:28. | :41:35.
down town, it was only going one way, downwards. | :41:35. | :41:42.
This may be slipy. Across the East Coast of America, the total | :41:42. | :41:50.
commercial and personal damage is estimated at up to $50 billion. The | :41:50. | :41:52.
Metropolitan Transit Authority went underground to film one of its | :41:52. | :42:02.
| :42:02. | :42:17. | ||
There was no escape for cars, left Inland, the problem was not floods, | :42:17. | :42:22.
but falling trees. Having recorded his famous video, John Mateer was | :42:22. | :42:27.
forced to take cover. We stayed in the basement all night | :42:27. | :42:34.
and we emerged in the morning. This was the view from our window. It | :42:34. | :42:38.
was crazy. You couldn't even look at it because there was just a | :42:38. | :42:46.
gigantic tree in the way. There is a picture of a, an entire tree | :42:46. | :42:51.
covering our house. So we basically live in a tree house. This one was | :42:51. | :42:56.
the tree in front of our house, the reason why we couldn't get out of | :42:56. | :43:01.
our house. We had to climb under the trunk, which was an interesting | :43:01. | :43:07.
feat. It shows the neighbour's car there. I'm a curious person. I like | :43:07. | :43:12.
to film things. I post things on social media and everything. | :43:12. | :43:16.
Brooklyn journalist Becky Griffin had had to stay indoors during the | :43:16. | :43:24.
storm. Once it was safe to go out, she filmed with her mobile phone. | :43:24. | :43:28.
This was just way too crazy to take still photos of. So I'm going to | :43:28. | :43:32.
film the video for you, so you see the devastation just a block away | :43:32. | :43:40.
from my house. This street is totally blocked. -- | :43:40. | :43:44.
blocked by the tree and the cars are pretty much ruined underneath | :43:44. | :43:54.
| :43:54. | :43:58. | ||
it. Here's the first one. And the second one. And the third one | :43:58. | :44:06.
caught too. More cars stuck and ruined. I don't even know how to | :44:06. | :44:15.
walk past this thing. I was shocked. I was totally | :44:15. | :44:19.
shocked. A bunch of thoughts were running through my head at the same | :44:19. | :44:24.
time. First one was - oh, my God. Never seen anything like this. And | :44:25. | :44:29.
the second was - thank God people weren't hurt. | :44:29. | :44:37.
There's another big one that just came out on the street. And that | :44:37. | :44:41.
one was on the house. So yeah, I filmed it and I pretty | :44:41. | :44:47.
much called the video, you know I wrote "counting my blessings". See | :44:47. | :44:57.
| :44:57. | :45:04. | ||
one, two. And another one. Three. Wow. There's trees down in the | :45:04. | :45:08.
neighbourhood, wires down and it feels like you're in a war zone, | :45:08. | :45:11.
but it's strange because this is where I grew up. This is where I've | :45:11. | :45:16.
lived my whole life. I've never had something like this hit so close to | :45:16. | :45:26.
| :45:26. | :45:28. | ||
The insurance came said it was a loss. It was crushed by the tree, | :45:28. | :45:33.
so we will get nothing back. looks like something from a movie | :45:33. | :45:38.
set. I cannot imagine it is my car. The second car received damage from | :45:38. | :45:43.
the same tree. There is also damage in the back yard. We will show you. | :45:43. | :45:47.
There is too much structural damage on the roof from weight of the tree | :45:47. | :45:52.
falling on it. It ripped the sheet metal off the door. We thought from | :45:52. | :45:55.
that side it looks like nothing happened, but obviously the whole | :45:55. | :46:04.
door was ripped off it looked like somebody came in from the movie, | :46:04. | :46:07.
Terminator. That is just what happened in the front yard. From | :46:07. | :46:11.
the back yard, there is more damage. Remember the The Wizard of Oz? It | :46:11. | :46:15.
looks like when the house fell on the witch. There are no words for | :46:15. | :46:19.
this... This happened later on at night, whether it was darker. We | :46:19. | :46:27.
didn't see this tree falling this way. We heard something. Terese | :46:27. | :46:31.
said look out of the window, the shed is not where it is supposed to | :46:31. | :46:36.
be. It is unbelievable how nature can pick this whole thing up. The | :46:37. | :46:42.
shed is in tact. There nothing wrong with this. As horrific as it | :46:42. | :46:47.
looks we are all here to talk about it. It is just things. We are | :46:47. | :46:52.
fortunate no-one got hurt. This is Alexander Higgins. | :46:52. | :46:57.
Here is my street... I am driving down it. | :46:57. | :47:01.
Back at Jersey Shore, Alexander Higgins is still reporting on the | :47:01. | :47:09.
superstorm, but now the story had come directly home. | :47:09. | :47:16.
All my neighbourhood lost everything. We are all... We are | :47:16. | :47:20.
all pretty much devastated by all of this. | :47:20. | :47:30.
This is my son's girlfriend's, he is only seven. You can see that | :47:30. | :47:36.
every single street... Here is my aunt and uncle's house. Even with | :47:36. | :47:41.
all of the stuff that they have in there, they have not even moved out | :47:41. | :47:47.
10% of their stuff. That is my neighbour, Jay. This is | :47:47. | :47:55.
my house. This is all of my property. | :47:55. | :48:05.
| :48:05. | :48:07. | ||
It's just like an absolute war zone. Everybody got hit. Hard. | :48:07. | :48:13.
A few days after filming the video for YouTube, Alex took us around | :48:13. | :48:18.
what remained of his house. There is a little over here. | :48:18. | :48:28.
| :48:28. | :48:34. | ||
This is my daughter's old room. It was decorated like a little | :48:34. | :48:40.
princess castle. She is daddy's princess. Daddy's little girl. | :48:40. | :48:44.
Purple was her favourite colour. Cleaning this room out was probably | :48:44. | :48:50.
the hardest. Taking out all of the memories. Little baby socks. Her | :48:50. | :49:00.
| :49:00. | :49:01. | ||
toys. They were all in here. Her barbis. | :49:01. | :49:10.
DBarbies. This room right here was my room where I had tens of | :49:10. | :49:15.
thousands of dollars of electronic equipment. Networking equipment. | :49:15. | :49:21.
Servers, my blog. Thats with my life, that is now wiped out. I | :49:21. | :49:27.
don't have a job or income coming in now. That was destroyed. | :49:27. | :49:31.
Insurance does not cover him for flooding, but prompted by the | :49:31. | :49:36.
videos he has prosted online, friends have set up a Facebook page | :49:36. | :49:43.
to raise money for the family as it rebuilds. | :49:43. | :49:49.
So far, they have raised $8,000. Everywhere people were having to | :49:49. | :49:53.
cope with the fallout of the superstorm. Everywhere it was | :49:53. | :50:03.
| :50:03. | :50:04. | ||
recorded on video. We can call the police? Call the | :50:04. | :50:10.
police. We have two hours here. This is not fair! This was Nutley, | :50:10. | :50:14.
New Jersey. Panic-buying at the gas stations, | :50:14. | :50:24.
| :50:24. | :50:25. | ||
it threatened to get out of control when a driver jumped the queue. | :50:25. | :50:34.
People who had been waiting hours to fill up, turned on the driver. | :50:34. | :50:40.
OK. You know what? You know what? We are a community here too. No. | :50:40. | :50:48.
You are not going to have gas. Local maths teacher, Dan Grecko, | :50:48. | :50:51.
came out with his camera to film the action. | :50:51. | :50:58.
They say you are jumping the line. Don't yell. I can hear in this spot. | :50:58. | :51:05.
I take from this line. Not this. but there is a line. Regardless of | :51:05. | :51:12.
if you drop down. You have to back out. | :51:12. | :51:15.
What's fair is fair. Thank you, officer. | :51:15. | :51:20.
Dan Grecko said he carried out the filming to embarrass the driver | :51:20. | :51:30.
| :51:30. | :51:30. | ||
into respecting the people who had been waiting for hours to fill up. | :51:30. | :51:40.
| :51:40. | :51:43. | ||
Thank you, buddy. Hey, how long you been in line, | :51:43. | :51:47.
buddy? One-and-a-half hours. I wouldn't mind, but this is not fair. | :51:47. | :51:52.
And he saw the line. Yeah, how can you miss that? How can you miss | :51:52. | :51:57.
that? Before, during and after the US superstorm, a new generation | :51:57. | :52:01.
skilled in text and video were able to help to report and even make | :52:01. | :52:04.
jokes about one of the biggest natural disasters in American | :52:04. | :52:11.
history. Social media was the biggest source | :52:11. | :52:16.
of actual information to get out to, not only New Yorkers, but also, you | :52:16. | :52:21.
know, all over the world. You turn on the TV, you see all of these | :52:21. | :52:25.
reporters out in the storm. You can't really hear what they are | :52:25. | :52:31.
saying as they are cut off. The wind is going on. So, OK, you are | :52:31. | :52:36.
getting a crazy weather report, but the real information was coming on | :52:36. | :52:41.
social media. People were taking pictures by their homes. People | :52:41. | :52:46.
writing what is going on. This is the apocalypse. | :52:46. | :52:52.
It kind of made main stream media look outdated. | :52:52. | :52:59.
How do you feel looking at it now? I mean, it, at first when I first | :52:59. | :53:04.
looked at it. I was surprised that people were making jokes about it. | :53:04. | :53:09.
I thought this was not funny. We were scared about it. Our voices | :53:09. | :53:13.
sound a little dramatic. I am a little dramatic. | :53:13. | :53:19.
In our family, we are like that! REPORTER: How many views has it | :53:19. | :53:24.
had? On here it take as while to update, but it almost 1 million. | :53:24. | :53:30.
That is a lot. Someone Auto-Tuneed our clip to be | :53:30. | :53:40.
| :53:40. | :53:40. | ||
a music video, basically. We were laughing at it at first. | :53:40. | :53:45.
# Oh, my God # I got that on film | :53:45. | :53:52.
# Oh, my God the car got crushed # There is a fire there | :53:52. | :54:02.
# Oh, my God # There is nothing you can do about | :54:02. | :54:09.
that! # I was expecting people to be interested in it. It is not | :54:09. | :54:16.
aften you see it like that. I was a -- expecting attention, but not | :54:16. | :54:20.
that much that this clip got. But there was a darker side when | :54:20. | :54:24.
the storm broke. There were a lot of tweets that | :54:24. | :54:32.
were just not accurate. Like the Fire Department headquarters were | :54:32. | :54:35.
evacuating. I tweeted to this person that was | :54:35. | :54:41.
not the case. I knew it was not as I was sitting at my desk, but I | :54:41. | :54:47.
wanted to ensure that people were not worried. A few people re- | :54:47. | :54:51.
tweeted. I had to ensure I was staying on top of those. To ensure | :54:51. | :54:58.
people that was not the case before that bad information spread further. | :54:58. | :55:02.
You have to be careful. People give misinformation through social media. | :55:02. | :55:08.
The one good thing, though, about the social media, it tends to shoot | :55:08. | :55:11.
down misinformation a lot quicker than other platforms as there are | :55:11. | :55:14.
so many people that can see information that is flowing through, | :55:14. | :55:17.
pick it up and say that is not correct. With television it seems | :55:18. | :55:22.
that often it takes a little longer for that misinformation to be shot | :55:22. | :55:26.
down. After he had film the falling trees, | :55:26. | :55:30.
John Mateer carried on filming for us. He was on the spot to become | :55:30. | :55:38.
this film's very own weather man. You were completely terrified that | :55:38. | :55:42.
tomorrow there would be a north- easter, which is a store, a big | :55:42. | :55:47.
storm coming. That is a week after Hurricane Sandy hit! So, I'm at the | :55:47. | :55:53.
school. It is about 11.00am. The north-easter is just beginning. | :55:53. | :55:58.
It is raining. There is a little bit of wind, but it is supposed to | :55:59. | :56:03.
get worse halfway through the day. So it is freezing. My hand is numb | :56:03. | :56:11.
from holding the phone. Oh, my God do you see that? It is like | :56:11. | :56:15.
blizzarding out! John Mateer is just one example of the new breed | :56:15. | :56:20.
of camera people, who, thanks to technology has transformed way that | :56:20. | :56:24.
we report the news. People are putting content on | :56:24. | :56:29.
YouTube. It make it is more competitive for the professional | :56:29. | :56:33.
videoographers and photographers out in the field. OK, so, hey you | :56:33. | :56:36.
guys it is the day after the north- easter. | :56:36. | :56:41.
We now have to compete with a guy with a cellphone. | :56:41. | :56:45.
The news, it seems, has changed for good. | :56:45. | :56:50.
It is crazy how much snow there is. There is snow days after Hallowe'en. | :56:50. | :56:57.
That make no, sir sense! We have become used to the appalling images | :56:57. | :57:03.
of what nature can throw at us. Tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanos, | :57:03. | :57:07.
but it is not just for its destruction that Hurricane Sandy | :57:07. | :57:14.
will be remembered. More than 100 people dead, homes wrecked, and | :57:14. | :57:18.
lives shattered. The bill for damage is running into billions. | :57:18. | :57:23.
This is a serious and big storm. should not underestimate the impact | :57:23. | :57:27.
of the storm or assume that predictions will be wrong. | :57:27. | :57:34.
But Superstorm Sandy also will be remembered as the first natural | :57:34. | :57:42.
disaster where at each and every stage, the images were captured by | :57:42. | :57:47.
eyewitnesses who witnessed its full might and awesome power. | :57:47. | :57:57.
| :57:57. | :58:05. | ||
Oh, my God! Plg -- Ready, go! Hurricane Sandy! A natural disaster | :58:05. | :58:15.
| :58:15. | :58:15. | ||
Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds | :58:15. | :59:14.
Hi, I'm Sam, with the day's entertainment news on Three. | :59:14. | :59:19.
Former Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis has tonight been released on bail. | :59:19. | :59:22.
It follows his arrest this morning on suspicion of sexual offences. He | :59:22. | :59:25.
had denied previous claims. ITV has taken disciplinary action | :59:25. | :59:29.
at This Morning after Phillip Schofield showed the PM a list of | :59:29. | :59:33.
alleged paedophiles. The network and presenter have apologised. | :59:33. | :59:36.
Emily Atack has had death threats on Twitter. The Inbetweeners star | :59:36. | :59:40.
said it was the most vicious thing she had ever been sent. Police are | :59:40. | :59:43.
investigating. A judge in LA has thrown out a case | :59:43. | :59:47.
involving a paparazzo who chased Justin Bieber. He was followed at | :59:47. | :59:50.
high speed. The photographer still faces charges of reckless driving. | :59:50. | :59:54. |
