..takes raw talent, determination, drive and

:00:00.:00:16.

Starting off as a young athlete from Wolverhampton, there

:00:17.:00:25.

There were setbacks that really tested my dedication, but

:00:26.:00:33.

when I won Olympic gold, I soon realised it had been worth every

:00:34.:00:36.

There are plenty of sportswomen around

:00:37.:00:41.

the world who've felt the

:00:42.:00:43.

Over the next half hour, we'll hear from five

:00:44.:00:53.

remarkable women as they tell their stories

:00:54.:00:58.

of setback and triumph - the

:00:59.:01:00.

Sometimes, just getting to the starting line can be

:01:01.:09:20.

In a moment, we'll be hearing from one athlete hoping to

:09:21.:09:25.

change the face of road cycling in the US.

:09:26.:09:28.

Next, to Vietnam, where a visit to a pool transformed the life of

:09:29.:09:32.

Getting started is really hard, but once I get on my

:09:33.:13:42.

More women should be cycling, more African-American women should be

:13:43.:13:53.

cycling, that's why I put the hours in.

:13:54.:14:04.

I have the goal to be the first professional female

:14:05.:14:06.

I started racing when I was 26, which is quite old for someone

:14:07.:14:29.

I won a state championship, maybe in my third

:14:30.:14:38.

race in, which is kind of unheard of.

:14:39.:14:44.

You've got to be focused, determined and have a high

:14:45.:14:46.

Professional cycling is a predominantly white

:14:47.:14:52.

Other colours and cultures aren't very well represented.

:14:53.:14:58.

I think African-American women aren't

:14:59.:15:01.

cycling because they don't see anyone who looks like them doing it.

:15:02.:15:10.

I'm going to be the pearl that I couldn't find in the sport.

:15:11.:15:14.

I owe it to all the girls who look like me

:15:15.:15:17.

who have the potential to become great.

:15:18.:15:27.

Anxiety is such a weird thing in that there can be absolutely

:15:28.:15:34.

nothing wrong and you come up with a million things

:15:35.:15:36.

When I first started racing, it was hard

:15:37.:15:43.

to even get myself to the

:15:44.:15:49.

It's pretty cool in that the bike is both a physical

:15:50.:15:53.

vehicle and a metaphorical vehicle that can take you where you want to

:15:54.:16:01.

Cycling has changed my life in so many positive ways.

:16:02.:16:13.

When I started on this journey to become

:16:14.:16:15.

professional, I thought it would be a good idea to start a blog because

:16:16.:16:21.

it could be helpful to all those women I'm trying to reach.

:16:22.:16:27.

There's something more concrete about things

:16:28.:16:29.

I wanted to hold myself accountable for the goals I'd

:16:30.:16:33.

I really like going fast on a bicycle.

:16:34.:16:45.

I think going fast on a bike is special because you did it, you

:16:46.:17:00.

Even if I don't become the best in the United

:17:01.:17:13.

States, I know I can still accomplish my goal of encouraging

:17:14.:17:16.

and inspiring other women of colour to go for it.

:17:17.:17:25.

Because maybe they are the one that's supposed to become

:17:26.:17:27.

For one athlete in Egypt, the freedom to compete comes

:17:28.:17:38.

But first, India, and one woman reaching dizzying

:17:39.:17:47.

heights while redefining expectations in her country.

:17:48.:26:03.

commitment these women have made in the pursuit of success.

:26:04.:26:07.

And I believe that, in the years to come,

:26:08.:26:09.

we can expect more records shattered, more races run, and

:26:10.:26:11.

Good evening. A bit of a mixed bag coming our way this we can put it

:26:12.:26:51.

has

:26:52.:26:52.
