-So, just a wee...

-That'll be grand.

0:02:250:02:27

-So, Thursday week?

-Thursday week.

-That's grand. See you. Bye.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC PLAYS

0:04:340:04:38

-I'm from the Acosta School of Music in New York.

-Wonderful!

0:05:460:05:51

'They've been very open and honest, the people that we've met.

0:06:180:06:21

'They let you know. You could get a picture that it's all great'

0:06:210:06:24

and there's no problems,

0:06:240:06:25

but when they tell you such and such a thing might happen

0:06:250:06:28

or, "This was a disaster," or, "I wish you hadn't done that,"

0:06:280:06:31

that makes a wild difference.

0:06:310:06:33

They had a problem with some of the campsites,

0:06:560:06:59

so hopefully we won't have that in Derry.

0:06:590:07:01

We've been ahead of the game, cos we've known we're getting the Fleadh,

0:07:010:07:05

to think out the possibilities of where we could have the campsites.

0:07:050:07:08

So, overall, it's just getting an opportunity to be here at the Fleadh,

0:07:080:07:12

here, and see, overall, all the things we have to do next year.

ROCK MUSIC PLAYS

0:09:200:09:23

MUSIC: "The Sash"

0:11:020:11:04

So, what we're going to do tonight, we're going to make a presentation

0:11:580:12:02

on some of the history and the culture

0:12:020:12:04

of the marching band tradition

0:12:040:12:06

but concentrating on the flute bands,

0:12:060:12:08

to give people a better idea of a tradition

0:12:080:12:12

that sometimes, as we would say, can be misrepresented.

0:12:120:12:16

Over the last couple of months, there's been an engagement with the Fleadh.

0:12:220:12:25

I suppose, in our community,

0:12:250:12:27

the Fleadh is one of these things that's been...

0:12:270:12:30

It's almost like a lot of people think it should be avoided

0:12:300:12:33

and protested against, or whatever,

0:12:330:12:36

but I mean we've begun to understand it's big music,

0:12:360:12:39

and our bands are big music.

0:12:390:12:41

I can hardly get the high notes on it.

0:12:570:13:00

-You have to bring it in a bit.

-That's what I was going to tell you,

0:13:000:13:03

but you already know. I don't need to tell you.

0:13:030:13:06

I think we're starting to wake up to the fact

0:13:160:13:18

-that we are much more the same than we are different.

-Aye.

0:13:180:13:21

And that's a direction I want to take.

0:13:210:13:24

-I'm open to taking...

-That's unbelievable.

0:13:240:13:26

I'm a member of the Pride of the Orange and Blue Auld Boys in Newbuildings.

0:13:590:14:03

I'm also a committee member of the Londonderry Bands' Forum,

0:14:030:14:06

and I can see nothing but positivity coming out of this

0:14:060:14:10

for the Fleadh, plus ourselves. And I think that,

0:14:100:14:15

if it happens, it'll be a good thing for the city, on the whole.

0:14:150:14:18

We have been in possession of the Galway hooker for quite a few years,

0:14:410:14:45

but it's been out of the water for several years, lying in dry dock,

0:14:450:14:49

so we're hoping to secure the funding before the Fleadh to make the boat seaworthy again.

0:14:490:14:53

So I'm in the process of getting quotations and then sending off an application

0:14:530:14:57

with the aim to getting the Galway hooker into the water

0:14:570:15:00

for around May or June, so we can use it during the Fleadh

0:15:000:15:03

to sail up and down the Foyle,

0:15:030:15:05

more as a visual spectacle, to enhance the overall festival.

0:15:050:15:09

It won't be open for passengers,

0:15:090:15:10

but there will be people sailing on the Foyle.

0:15:100:15:14

First impression is it seems to have dried out a lot

0:15:250:15:28

since the last time I saw it.

0:15:280:15:30

You can see the cracks straight on through, which is the problem,

0:15:300:15:33

because it's been out of the water so long it's dried out,

0:15:330:15:36

and it's all separate planks. They're all contracted,

0:15:360:15:39

so that means it leaves these gaps that open up in between...

0:15:390:15:43

which means that if it goes in the water, water will get in,

0:15:430:15:46

so it will need to be corked up and put in the water so it can expand

0:15:460:15:49

and close again. So, obviously, here...it's pretty rotted,

0:15:490:15:53

so this will all need to be replaced.

0:15:530:15:56

You can just hear... That's completely rotted through, that one.

0:15:560:16:00

It'll all have to be taken off and replaced.

0:16:000:16:03

The company that's supposed to be fixing the boat up

0:16:150:16:18

have another few orders in before us, so we've been delayed in them,

0:16:180:16:22

so that's pushing us back,

0:16:220:16:24

so something needs to be decided in the next week or two,

0:16:240:16:27

whether they can do it within the timeframe or not.

0:16:270:16:31

We'll have to look at other options.

0:16:310:16:33

Hopefully, this Friday, they're getting back to me,

0:16:330:16:36

to say whether they can do it or not.

0:16:360:16:39

CHEEPING Ooh!

0:17:110:17:14

# No dear, I don't know why

0:17:300:17:34

# No dear, I don't know why. #

0:17:340:17:37

Aw, he's so cute!

0:18:550:18:57

Can I pet him?

0:18:570:18:59

He's just a wee bit feared, that's all, but touch him.

0:18:590:19:02

CHICK CHEEPS

0:19:020:19:05

This is the second year of the festival

0:19:290:19:32

and there's a range of events on -

0:19:320:19:34

concerts and workshops.

0:19:340:19:36

We've got a double-headline performance tonight

0:19:380:19:42

with Dave Munnelly and Morga,

0:19:420:19:44

and Steve Cooney's joining us.

0:19:440:19:46

Steve's actually here doing a guitar workshop,

0:19:460:19:49

as are a number of other well-known musicians.

0:19:490:19:52

They're tutoring workshops. Lisa Kelly's doing the harp.

0:19:520:19:55

It's my first time here. It's a beautiful building.

0:20:470:20:50

I'm highly impressed with the architecture.

0:20:500:20:53

I've heard great reports about this room, acoustically.

0:20:530:20:57

The acoustics are supposed to be very good,

0:20:570:21:00

so I'm looking forward to testing that out tonight.

0:21:000:21:03

Ready...and...

0:21:510:21:53

Last year's numbers were good,

0:21:560:21:58

but I can see the increase in the numbers in the workshops

0:21:580:22:01

and the fact that tonight's concert, the tickets are all sold out as well,

0:22:010:22:05

so it is taking on a bit of momentum from last year,

0:22:050:22:09

because you have a good experience and know what to expect -

0:22:090:22:13

they're going to come and get great workshops, great music,

0:22:130:22:16

so I do notice an increase in numbers and that's what you want,

0:22:160:22:19

so we're happy with that as well.

GUITAR PLAYS

0:23:160:23:19

# Mary, dear... #

0:23:320:23:34

I was playing, the year before last actually, at the Cavan Fleadh

0:23:340:23:39

and I think Martin Donoghue did a great job there in Cavan

0:23:390:23:43

over the last two years,

0:23:430:23:45

particularly getting musicians from different disciplines in.

0:23:450:23:48

I did a lot of cross-border cross-cultural work.

0:23:480:23:50

There was one great evening with Willie Drennan playing the Lambeg,

0:23:500:23:54

and a gang of musicians from Antrim,

0:23:540:23:57

and the bringing together of the different cultures

0:23:570:24:01

I thought was very successful.

0:24:010:24:03

I think Martin has put a lot of work into that,

0:24:030:24:06

so I think he's raised the game,

0:24:060:24:08

and it'd be interesting to see now how Derry delivers

0:24:080:24:11

and the surprises that are in store. I'm sure there'll be great things here.

0:24:110:24:15

# But how cruel me father will be

0:24:150:24:19

# To banish me darling

0:24:200:24:22

# Far away from thee

0:24:220:24:25

# And I'll leave them all

0:24:260:24:29

# And I'll go with thee

0:24:290:24:32

# Me bold, undaunted soldier... #

0:24:330:24:41

Brilliant.

0:24:460:24:48

APPLAUSE

0:24:480:24:50

This is Kevin's birthday.

0:24:520:24:54

And he loved his birthday. And he loved...

0:24:540:24:58

APPLAUSE

0:24:580:25:00

He loved a real excuse to have all his friends

0:25:000:25:04

and family all together

0:25:040:25:07

and have one big session,

0:25:070:25:09

so this weekend has been one big session...

0:25:090:25:11

'The Fleadh, obviously, is the big event of this year,

0:25:110:25:14

'and it's really down to Kevin

0:25:140:25:17

'because he was the one that spearheaded us all'

0:25:170:25:20

to just keep going for it.

0:25:200:25:22

But we're looking towards the legacy.

0:25:220:25:24

The legacy's what this year's all about,

0:25:240:25:27

and the legacy's what we were going to do next year,

0:25:270:25:30

so the Fleadh will definitely be growing for next year,

0:25:300:25:33

so whilst the Fleadh's here, and it's great,

0:25:330:25:37

we've other things that we intend to grow on

0:25:370:25:40

throughout the years ahead.

0:25:400:25:42

I remembered that among the people that Kevin

0:25:550:25:58

brought to Derry on a regular basis was Len Graham and Joe Holmes,

0:25:580:26:03

and they actually performed their last concert together here in Derry

0:26:030:26:07

just after Christmas, I think it was 1977,

0:26:070:26:10

and this was one of the songs that they used to sing.

0:26:100:26:13

I'll just give it a quick burst.

0:26:130:26:15

# Here I am amongst yous

0:26:150:26:17

# And I'm here because I'm here

0:26:170:26:20

# And I'm only 12 months older

0:26:200:26:22

# Than I was this time last year... #

0:26:350:26:37

We're trying to get as many people across to Derry as we can.

0:26:480:26:50

I feel like I'm the Fleadh coming over the border.

0:27:000:27:03

It's so positive in so many different ways.

0:27:030:27:06

I mean, it's just one of those things that maybe might have been unheard of

0:27:060:27:10

a few years ago, the All-Ireland Fleadh,

0:27:100:27:12

and I think it's just a great thing for everybody involved.

0:27:120:27:16

We're good.

0:27:260:27:28

You know, if I say so myself.
