Welcome to Russia.

0:00:020:00:04

That's how cold it is - look.

0:00:040:00:06

This programme contains strong language and scenes which some viewers may find upsetting.

0:00:060:00:13

Growing up as a kid in the '80s in London,

0:00:130:00:16

Russia was painted as this weird big baddie.

0:00:160:00:18

Now with Vladimir Putin well into his third term as president,

0:00:210:00:25

it's starting to feel like that again.

0:00:250:00:27

NEWSREADERS: Pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine...

0:00:270:00:30

Vladimir Putin has ignored the dark warnings from the West.

0:00:300:00:32

There's going to have to be a very different relationship

0:00:320:00:35

between Britain and Russia.

0:00:350:00:36

The West has imposed tough sanctions against Russia...

0:00:360:00:39

Russia is responsible for the violence.

0:00:390:00:42

..and relations are the frostiest since the Cold War.

0:00:420:00:45

So I'm here to find out why

0:00:470:00:48

so many young people are rallying around the flag.

0:00:480:00:52

MARCHERS CHANT

0:00:520:00:55

In Moscow, nationalism is on the march.

0:00:550:00:58

'And led by a president busy flexing his muscles on the world stage...'

0:01:040:01:07

Literally rings with Putin's face on, that's incredible.

0:01:070:01:11

'..Russian pride is at an all-time high.'

0:01:110:01:14

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:01:140:01:18

But there's a darker side to Russian nationalism - much darker.

0:01:180:01:22

I think I'm the only black man in Red Square right now!

0:01:220:01:25

I've gained unique access to some of Russia's

0:01:280:01:30

most high-profile ultra-nationalists...

0:01:300:01:33

IN ENGLISH:

0:01:330:01:35

..to discover what some young people

0:01:410:01:43

think it means to be a true Russian...

0:01:430:01:45

This one...is a masterpiece.

0:01:450:01:48

..and to find out what happens when you love your country too much.

0:01:500:01:54

IN ENGLISH:

0:01:540:01:56

I've come to Moscow, the second biggest city in Europe

0:02:080:02:12

and the political heart of Russia.

0:02:120:02:13

When you think of Russia you sort of imagine snow, cold, big fluffy hats.

0:02:150:02:19

I was expecting the cold, but when you feel it,

0:02:210:02:24

you realise what the cold actually is!

0:02:240:02:27

Relations between the Kremlin and the West are at their worst

0:02:270:02:30

since the collapse of the Iron Curtain.

0:02:300:02:33

Economic sanctions have hit the economy hard,

0:02:330:02:35

and anti-Western feeling is high.

0:02:350:02:38

But despite all this, here in Russia, Putin has

0:02:380:02:41

an almost 90% approval rating,

0:02:410:02:43

making him one of the most popular leaders in the world.

0:02:430:02:47

Not entirely sure if I'd pick a Putin mug.

0:02:470:02:50

There's even Putin Russia dolls - look at that!

0:02:500:02:52

HE LAUGHS

0:02:520:02:54

And many young people are finding their voice, rallying around

0:02:540:02:58

the president and the flag as a way of fighting back against the West.

0:02:580:03:03

Every garment has a political message.

0:03:030:03:07

The fashion show is hosted by Set,

0:03:070:03:09

a movement of young creatives who are using their

0:03:090:03:12

unique talents to showcase Russia on the world stage.

0:03:120:03:15

And yes, that is Putin's face plastered on almost every garment.

0:03:150:03:19

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:03:190:03:21

The place is packed with trendy young hipsters,

0:03:260:03:29

but they're here for politics as well as fashion.

0:03:290:03:32

Set are one of the fastest growing youth organisations in Russia,

0:03:450:03:49

and their propaganda is making politics cool.

0:03:490:03:53

MUZAK PLAYS IN LIFT

0:03:580:04:00

I've been invited back to their head office in the centre of the city,

0:04:000:04:03

and I'm keen to find out more about them.

0:04:030:04:06

DING

0:04:070:04:08

-Hello.

-Hello.

-Hey, how you doing? I'm Reg.

0:04:130:04:15

I was waiting for you, nice to meet you.

0:04:150:04:17

-Nice to meet you, what's your name?

-My name is Anna.

0:04:170:04:19

Hello, Anna, lovely to meet you. So this is your offices?

0:04:190:04:22

Yes, this is Set. I'm sure you will love it.

0:04:220:04:25

There seems to be quite a lot of pictures of Putin here.

0:04:250:04:29

-Yeah.

-Why is that?

0:04:290:04:30

Because we love our government, and everything that is done

0:04:300:04:35

is done right, and all of it is inspired by the new Russia.

0:04:350:04:39

The new Russia. What's the new Russia then?

0:04:390:04:42

It's the Russia with Putin in power,

0:04:420:04:46

all people here are very patriotic, they love their country

0:04:460:04:50

and they're proud of doing something which reflects the country's history,

0:04:500:04:56

the country's values,

0:04:560:04:57

and it is supported all round the country, also round the world.

0:04:570:05:02

Set has 11 offices in major cities across Russia,

0:05:020:05:06

and thousands of young people have been recruited to their cause.

0:05:060:05:11

I take it you're a big fan of Putin? I mean, he's on your T-shirt.

0:05:110:05:14

-Yeah.

-Do you have a tattoo?

0:05:140:05:16

Why is that I literally can't go five steps without seeing

0:05:160:05:19

a picture of Putin in this office?

0:05:190:05:22

Because he is our leader.

0:05:220:05:24

He is not a political construction like President Obama

0:05:240:05:28

or David Cameron, Vladimir Putin thinks on another level.

0:05:280:05:36

Could you explain the images here of Putin with animals?

0:05:360:05:40

Why are there so many pictures of him with animals all in one place?

0:05:400:05:44

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:05:440:05:46

To me, the way they portray Putin seems pretty weird,

0:05:550:05:58

it's almost like a form of worship.

0:05:580:06:01

But they seem to see him not just as a man,

0:06:010:06:03

but as a concept, used to promote Russian strength and attitude.

0:06:030:06:06

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:06:060:06:10

This just gets weirder and weirder.

0:06:160:06:18

'There's even a card game where Putin is the hero.

0:06:180:06:21

'And guess who the baddies are.'

0:06:210:06:23

Is that supposed to be David Cameron?

0:06:230:06:25

I don't know if I believe that, but whatever.

0:06:360:06:40

In Russia, loving your country

0:06:400:06:42

and your president is actively encouraged.

0:06:420:06:45

The views I'm hearing are fast becoming mainstream.

0:06:450:06:50

It seems as though there is this idea that he is

0:06:500:06:54

a loved man by everybody in the country, even the animals,

0:06:540:06:57

where does that idea come from?

0:06:570:06:59

That's the reality, that's not the idea.

0:06:590:07:01

That's actually how it is.

0:07:010:07:03

Do you think it's strange that I'm surprised,

0:07:030:07:05

or should I not be surprised?

0:07:050:07:07

That's strange that you're surprised, cos I think it's normal.

0:07:070:07:12

It's amazing to see the facilities you've got, you've got

0:07:120:07:14

plasmas everywhere, editing suites, photoshoots, it's amazing,

0:07:140:07:20

but what is the real reason behind what it is you do?

0:07:200:07:24

We have very interesting purposes of creating world leaders,

0:07:240:07:29

and I think we're starting to succeed in it.

0:07:290:07:33

And do you think that world leaders will come out of this group?

0:07:330:07:36

I'm sure. I hope I will be one of them in the fashion industry.

0:07:360:07:40

Art and propaganda have always gone hand in hand in Russia.

0:07:420:07:45

But in the 21st century, it's not just traditional methods that

0:07:480:07:51

young people are using to portray ideas.

0:07:510:07:54

Russians are more active on social media than almost any other country

0:07:540:07:58

in the world, and today I'm crashing the photoshoot of

0:07:580:08:02

a young nationalist who's using just that to spread her political agenda.

0:08:020:08:06

(Why's she got an axe?)

0:08:160:08:17

I don't know whether to...say hello or run away.

0:08:190:08:22

Each to their own.

0:08:260:08:27

Nationalists like 19-year-old Masha believe

0:08:290:08:32

traditional Russian values are under threat.

0:08:320:08:34

Her day job is working for Putin's ruling party in Russia's parliament,

0:08:340:08:38

and I'm wondering if that's where she borrowed her prop collection.

0:08:380:08:41

Ah, now I know quite a lot of people that work in fashion,

0:08:430:08:46

and I can honestly say I've never seen one of these

0:08:460:08:49

at a photoshoot! How does this fit into what you're shooting?

0:08:490:08:53

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:08:530:08:56

Right, OK. Well, are you going to change into something else then,

0:09:020:09:07

get another outfit on?

0:09:070:09:08

You've got to go for the gun.

0:09:110:09:12

-Come on, let's get the camo on, love, let's go for it.

-OK.

0:09:120:09:16

Brilliant.

0:09:160:09:17

This is a turn for the books, isn't it?

0:09:200:09:23

I just didn't think there'd be bloody axes! And guns!

0:09:230:09:28

Arr!

0:09:290:09:31

But behind the cheesy props, there's a serious message.

0:09:310:09:35

Masha uses social media to promote her ideas of

0:09:350:09:38

a stronger Russia to a worldwide audience,

0:09:380:09:41

and has become something of an internet star.

0:09:410:09:44

She believes her images will unite Russians against the great enemy.

0:09:580:10:03

What made you start taking pictures of yourself in

0:10:120:10:15

several different outfits and posting them on social networks?

0:10:150:10:18

Masha hopes her online persona can start a movement to reunite

0:10:450:10:50

all former republics of the Soviet Union into one country again.

0:10:500:10:53

So, essentially, you mean returning to the Soviet Union,

0:11:070:11:10

is that what you mean?

0:11:100:11:11

Despite what our governments might think,

0:11:170:11:19

Masha sees Putin's invasion of the Crimea and the support

0:11:190:11:23

for Ukrainian rebels as steps towards

0:11:230:11:26

returning Russia to its former glory.

0:11:260:11:28

When the Soviet Union broke up in 1991,

0:11:280:11:31

one country became 15 separate states,

0:11:310:11:34

and countries like Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan came into being.

0:11:340:11:40

But Russia's economy was always the strongest,

0:11:400:11:42

and thousands of people, from the poorer new countries

0:11:420:11:45

surrounding it, flooded in in search of work.

0:11:450:11:47

There's now around 11 million immigrants living in Russia,

0:11:490:11:52

and just like everywhere else in the world, they're an easy scapegoat

0:11:520:11:56

even though many once lived in the same country.

0:11:560:12:01

More than half of Russians now hold anti-immigration views,

0:12:010:12:04

and police keep close tabs on anyone whose face doesn't fit.

0:12:040:12:09

I'm outside this busy rail station, and it's interesting,

0:12:090:12:13

because there are quite a lot of police.

0:12:130:12:16

They're definitely making their presence felt,

0:12:160:12:18

because they seem to only be stopping

0:12:180:12:20

what are quite obviously immigrants.

0:12:200:12:22

Fuck. There you go.

0:12:250:12:27

The last guy they picked up,

0:12:270:12:29

he is now getting thrown in the back of the meatwagon.

0:12:290:12:32

It's really happening, and it's happening right here.

0:12:350:12:38

I'm getting a taste of what it might actually be like

0:12:380:12:41

to be an immigrant here in Moscow.

0:12:410:12:44

But it's not just the police most immigrants are scared of.

0:12:440:12:48

After the Soviet Union collapsed, numerous ultra-nationalist groups

0:12:480:12:52

sprung up to protect against what they saw as a foreign invasion.

0:12:520:12:56

And for years, this man, Dmitry Demushkin,

0:12:590:13:02

has been at their centre.

0:13:020:13:04

He once led the Slavic Union, a group of over 25,000 neo-Nazis

0:13:040:13:09

which Putin shut down for being TOO extreme.

0:13:090:13:12

He now leads another extreme nationalist group

0:13:130:13:16

called, simply, The Russians.

0:13:160:13:18

They're taking to the streets tomorrow, and I want to be there.

0:13:180:13:24

One of their members has uploaded a video to rally the troops.

0:13:240:13:27

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:13:270:13:29

The guy's name is Vadim.

0:13:490:13:50

I've tracked him down, and after delicate negotiations,

0:13:500:13:53

he's agreed to meet me on the march.

0:13:530:13:55

Vadim's my way into the group, and hopefully its leader Demushkin.

0:13:550:14:01

This march, on the face of it,

0:14:010:14:02

it seems like I should be the last person attending!

0:14:020:14:08

You know what I mean?

0:14:080:14:09

I'm in the middle of Moscow,

0:14:090:14:11

I'm going to a march on nationalism,

0:14:110:14:12

and I've got a feeling

0:14:120:14:14

there aren't going to be many other black guys there with camera crews.

0:14:140:14:17

So I MIGHT stand out just a little bit.

0:14:170:14:19

I'm very aware that there is no way of knowing

0:14:210:14:24

what I'm walking into, and that makes me feel uneasy.

0:14:240:14:28

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:14:280:14:30

It's the day of the march, and to be completely honest,

0:14:400:14:43

I'm not entirely sure what to expect.

0:14:430:14:45

Ten years ago, Putin himself started this march

0:14:480:14:51

to celebrate Russian unity,

0:14:510:14:53

but the ultra-nationalists quickly hijacked it.

0:14:530:14:57

They're marching in Lyublino, a working-class suburb

0:14:570:14:59

in the south of the city and a nationalist heartland.

0:14:590:15:02

Wow.

0:15:050:15:08

You can see packs of people congregating in different places,

0:15:100:15:13

it feels like we're right at the beginning of...

0:15:130:15:16

..of it all.

0:15:180:15:19

Look at that.

0:15:250:15:27

Just across the street there are buses and buses full of coppers.

0:15:270:15:32

Look at that - packed.

0:15:320:15:33

In the past, the march has turned violent,

0:15:340:15:38

so the authorities aren't taking any chances.

0:15:380:15:40

They've flooded the area with police.

0:15:420:15:44

And like at all public gatherings here,

0:15:470:15:49

they're making EVERYONE walk through metal detectors.

0:15:490:15:53

-POLICE OFFICER SPEAKS RUSSIAN

-Microphone.

0:15:530:15:56

I can't seem to find Vadim,

0:16:030:16:04

but loads of people are taking an interest in me.

0:16:040:16:08

It seems like every time I turn around,

0:16:080:16:10

there's a different camera in my face.

0:16:100:16:12

Either it's a photographer

0:16:120:16:14

or one of these professional-looking news crews.

0:16:140:16:16

Then a young journalist tells me why.

0:16:160:16:19

My face is all over Russian social media.

0:16:190:16:23

IN ENGLISH:

0:16:230:16:25

Oh, really?

0:16:250:16:26

-Really.

-What are they saying, can I see?

0:16:260:16:28

-One second.

-Apparently I've gone viral.

0:16:300:16:32

Lots of people on Twitter are talking about the stupid black guy!

0:16:320:16:37

-Let's have a look.

-No, no, no.

-There's a picture of me here.

0:16:370:16:41

-What are they saying?

-That you're a brave man.

0:16:410:16:45

You look worried for me.

0:16:450:16:47

A little bit.

0:16:470:16:48

IN ENGLISH:

0:16:480:16:50

THEY CHANT IN RUSSIAN

0:17:160:17:17

The demonstration is magnet for many different groups, but they all

0:17:300:17:33

have one thing in common - a belief in Russian supremacy.

0:17:330:17:38

Suddenly being in the mix just changes things massively,

0:17:380:17:41

the dynamic is really different, because you can really feel

0:17:410:17:45

and hear just how passionate people are.

0:17:450:17:46

There's a massive pack of young guys in the centre of the march,

0:17:490:17:52

they all seem to be covering their faces now.

0:17:520:17:55

CHANTING CONTINUES

0:17:550:17:56

'The atmosphere's changing fast,

0:18:010:18:02

'and I need to find Vadim as quickly as possible.

0:18:020:18:06

'He's my only contact with these extremists,

0:18:060:18:09

'and I've got a feeling I might need his protection.

0:18:090:18:12

'Then, suddenly, I spot him.'

0:18:130:18:16

I'm pretty sure that's Vadim over there.

0:18:160:18:18

-Vadim? Hello.

-Hello.

0:18:180:18:21

-Whoa, that was Viking-like. How are you doing?

-Fine, thanks.

0:18:210:18:24

Already it seems as though lots of people are taking

0:18:240:18:27

an interest in myself, cos, quite obviously, I'm not from Russia.

0:18:270:18:32

How do you think I'm going to be received today?

0:18:320:18:35

IN ENGLISH:

0:18:370:18:39

-That's it.

-You sure? You sure about that?

0:18:530:18:55

You don't seem so sure! You're not so sure. You're not so sure.

0:18:560:19:02

'I'm sticking to Vadim like glue,

0:19:110:19:13

'and he agrees to take me into the heart of the march.

0:19:130:19:16

'But then I see Dmitry Demushkin, the nationalist leader,

0:19:210:19:25

'and it seems he's just as eager to talk to me.'

-How is your health? Are you doing fine?

LAUGHTER

0:19:350:19:36

My health is good, I'm alive and well and being look after.

0:19:360:19:40

What did he say?

0:19:550:19:57

-Calm environment, nobody's going to...

-Oh, right, OK.

0:19:570:19:59

I think I've become part of the broadcast

0:19:590:20:03

and part of the march suddenly, as well.

0:20:030:20:05

We're, as you can see, surrounded by cameras,

0:20:050:20:07

and Dmitry has decided to make a point of the fact that I'm here,

0:20:070:20:13

because me being here says that this is a friendly march.

0:20:130:20:17

Well, this has taken a massive turn, I, erm...

0:20:220:20:25

..suddenly feel really uncomfortable.

0:20:270:20:29

We've been hijacked.

0:20:310:20:32

'It's dawned on me why they've come here.

0:20:320:20:34

'Demushkin's keen to get into mainstream politics.

0:20:340:20:38

'Social media is such an effective propaganda tool, being seen with

0:20:380:20:42

'a black guy is going to do wonders for the illusion of tolerance.'

0:20:420:20:46

-Vadim, how's it going?

-Fine.

0:20:460:20:48

What are you doing? Are you taking pictures and putting them online?

0:20:480:20:52

Did you think that he was going to try and get me on camera then?

0:20:520:20:55

If Vadim wants me here to show how tolerant nationalists are,

0:21:320:21:35

it's clear the message hasn't got through to everyone.

0:21:350:21:38

The fascist side of this nationalist pack is coming out.

0:21:380:21:42

The most scary thing about it is just how young they are.

0:21:440:21:47

They're walking through an incredibly residential area,

0:21:570:22:01

and if you are an immigrant staying in one of these flats,

0:22:010:22:04

how does that make you feel?

0:22:040:22:06

How part of this country do you feel? How safe do you feel?

Obviously not nice comments -

0:22:220:22:24

something about bananas.

0:22:240:22:26

Wow.

0:22:260:22:27

If these signs are anything to go by,

0:22:330:22:36

it's all to do with Asian men and women, and Islam.

0:22:360:22:38

Because they've basically got a three-headed monster

0:22:400:22:43

made up of what looks like Islamic men.

0:22:430:22:47

It's just ridiculous!

0:22:470:22:49

Fucking hell...

0:22:520:22:54

So there's another column here,

0:23:000:23:02

and those flags actually really...really look like swastikas.

0:23:020:23:08

-Do you mind being on camera?

-..talk to you?

-Yeah.

0:23:080:23:11

What you want? What you want to know?

0:23:110:23:15

OK, what's your reason for being here today?

0:23:150:23:17

You can answer in Russian. Shall we get going? Let's catch up.

0:23:230:23:25

IN ENGLISH:

0:23:370:23:38

After about two hours, the march comes to an end,

0:23:430:23:46

and the crowds quickly break up.

0:23:460:23:48

Around 20 people have been arrested for expressing

0:23:500:23:53

extreme right-wing views.

0:23:530:23:55

The rest return to their everyday lives.

0:23:550:23:58

Not far from where the march finished, is a place where

0:24:050:24:08

many of the extreme nationalists like to hang out.

0:24:080:24:10

Dmitry and Vadim have asked me to meet them at this little,

0:24:120:24:15

well, it looks like a community centre really.

0:24:150:24:19

I don't know exactly what we're walking into, but he's

0:24:190:24:21

demanded that I join them and that I..."have a chat" with them here.

0:24:210:24:28

There's Vad. You all right? How are you doing?

0:24:310:24:34

-Hello.

-Where's Dmitry? Is he inside?

-Er, I think he was inside.

0:24:340:24:38

Oh, right. Are you joining us?

0:24:380:24:42

Cheers, Vad.

0:24:420:24:44

Hey, there he is. How are you doing?

0:24:540:24:57

Dmitry says he's changed since his days in the Slavic Union.

0:24:570:25:01

He's got mainstream political ambitions

0:25:010:25:03

and is keen to show a softer side.

0:25:030:25:06

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:25:070:25:10

On the march that you got organised, I heard people chanting

0:25:100:25:14

"Russia for Russians" and "Keep Russia white",

0:25:140:25:16

were you aware of that sort of chant happening?

0:25:160:25:19

So what's your point of view on the way that

0:25:310:25:33

the country's being run then?

0:25:330:25:35

Vadim, why are you filming?

0:25:540:25:56

Just because it's rather interesting for our viewers.

0:25:560:26:02

It's funny, during the march you made a point of my presence

0:26:030:26:06

by sort of showing me off to the press, why was that?

0:26:060:26:10

You do realise I'm not African-American, don't you?

0:26:270:26:30

No, Afro-English? I'm British.

0:26:350:26:38

Yeah?

0:26:410:26:43

Why did you think I was African-American?

0:26:430:26:46

Glad I could help.

0:27:240:27:26

Vadim, it seems you've already put up that video of our conversation.

0:27:260:27:30

Oh, that was just a private message, I didn't show that on, eh...

0:27:300:27:35

-So you've not put it on Facebook?

-No, no.

-Are you sure?

0:27:350:27:37

Pretty sure I saw you put it on Russian Facebook.

0:27:370:27:39

So what exactly does it mean to be a nationalist today then?

0:27:540:27:57

And who are your people exactly?

0:28:040:28:05

It's been a long and stressful day.

0:28:130:28:16

I'm not sure what to make of Demushkin,

0:28:160:28:18

but meeting him has only strengthened my determination

0:28:180:28:21

to find out more about his extreme form of nationalism.

0:28:210:28:24

Most of the 11 million immigrants living in Russia

0:28:410:28:44

are from the Muslim republics of Central Asia,

0:28:440:28:48

which used to be part of the old Soviet Union.

0:28:480:28:51

These are the people Demushkin has a real problem with.

0:28:510:28:54

I've arranged to meet Omar.

0:28:560:28:58

He runs a popular blog detailing many of the issues that

0:28:580:29:01

immigrants like him have to deal with living in Russia.

0:29:010:29:04

IN TRANSLATION:

0:29:040:29:07

So why's it the migrants and not Russian natives making

0:29:180:29:21

these incredible buildings that are changing the face of Moscow?

0:29:210:29:24

Although immigrants from these countries don't need

0:29:380:29:41

visas to come here, they do need work permits, but more than

0:29:410:29:45

four million don't have these and are working illegally.

0:29:450:29:48

So on a site like this then, how many people would be illegal

0:29:480:29:51

versus the people that have the right to be here?

0:29:510:29:53

Russia has the second-largest immigrant population in the world

0:30:010:30:05

and this is causing huge resentment among many native Russians.

0:30:050:30:09

'Omar wants me to meet Ibrahim.'

0:30:330:30:36

-Reggie.

-Hello, nice to meet you. Reggie.

0:30:360:30:38

Ibrahim, nice to meet you. Nice to meet you.

0:30:380:30:40

Do you want to get something to drink?

0:30:400:30:42

Great.

0:30:420:30:44

'He came to Russia from Uzbekistan in 2009, hoping for a better life.

0:30:440:30:50

'Instead, he was brutally attacked by extreme nationalists.'

0:30:500:30:55

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:30:550:30:58

Why...why do you think they attacked you?

0:31:300:31:33

What was their reason? What was their motivation?

0:31:330:31:35

There's no reliable figures on how many migrants are attacked

0:32:320:32:36

as most go unreported.

0:32:360:32:38

But online, ultra-nationalist groups

0:32:400:32:42

share trophy videos on social media sites,

0:32:420:32:45

showcasing their absolute hatred for anyone who isn't Russian.

0:32:450:32:51

I've arranged to meet members

0:32:560:32:57

of one of the most notorious of these gangs, Restrukt.

0:32:570:33:01

-Hello. Alexis?

-Alexei.

0:33:020:33:04

-How are you doing? Reggie. Nice to meet you. Lisa?

-Hello, yes.

0:33:040:33:07

-Hello, good to meet you both. Shall we, um...?

-Let's go.

0:33:070:33:10

So, how old are you guys, then?

0:33:100:33:12

17, 24.

0:33:120:33:13

-So you're quite young.

-Yeah.

0:33:130:33:15

I'm a bit surprised at your age that you're so sure

0:33:150:33:18

about how you feel in terms of nationalism, et cetera.

0:33:180:33:21

-I mean...

-Mm-hm.

0:33:210:33:22

Is that common for people of your age?

0:33:220:33:24

0:33:240:33:26

Were you, at 17, just as confident about your views?

0:33:300:33:34

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:33:340:33:36

For Alexei and Lisa, nationalism is not just a mind-set,

it's a way of life - including what they wear.

Surrounded by nationalist symbolism, and even allusions to nazism,

0:34:170:34:21

it's scary that people so young want to be part of this family.

0:34:210:34:26

Alex, I exercise,

0:34:280:34:29

and when I take my coat off, I don't look like you.

0:34:290:34:32

Fair enough.

0:34:350:34:36

So how exactly did this all begin for you?

0:34:360:34:38

Where did these feelings come from?

0:34:380:34:39

Why is it so important to you, then, to be proud of being Russian,

0:34:490:34:54

be proud of where you're from?

0:34:540:34:55

What would you like Russia to be like, then?

0:35:050:35:07

What's your Russian future, if you were given the choice?

0:35:070:35:09

Well, not everyone is exactly comfortable with your point of view.

0:35:150:35:19

Have you ever got in trouble for your views?

0:35:190:35:21

SHOUTING FROM CROWD

0:35:480:35:49

That night, Alexei and Lisa invite me to a boxing match

0:35:510:35:54

organised by their nationalist friends.

0:35:540:35:56

But what they stand for is really playing on my mind.

0:36:000:36:03

It's really loud in there. I can barely hear.

0:36:050:36:09

A little earlier on, you spoke about your dream Russia

0:36:090:36:11

being white, being nationalist

0:36:110:36:13

and people being proud of traditional values.

0:36:130:36:16

Um...if you were to move to another country,

0:36:160:36:19

do you think you'll be able to live in a place

0:36:190:36:21

that feels quite the opposite of that?

FEMALE TRANSLATOR RESPONDS

0:36:480:36:50

So does that make me a mongrel, then?

0:37:320:37:34

So my children are at risk of diseases and abnormalities?

0:37:500:37:53

OK. All right. Well, um...

0:37:590:38:01

shall we go back in and see if we can catch the fight?

0:38:010:38:04

Do you know what? I'm going to pop outside, all right?

0:38:220:38:25

I'm going to shoot off.

0:38:250:38:26

I don't think I could stay in there for much longer,

0:38:370:38:39

if I'm totally honest.

0:38:390:38:40

That...ignorance was just making me...struggle

0:38:400:38:47

with continuing to communicate with someone so backwards.

0:38:470:38:52

They're fighting for a Russia that they deem to be pure,

0:38:520:38:55

and that isn't about lifestyle.

0:38:550:38:57

It's about colour.

0:38:570:38:58

Being in Russia is...to be really honest with you, tough,

0:39:020:39:08

because...this is a place that isn't used to people that look like me.

0:39:080:39:13

And...it's really starting to wear on me.

0:39:130:39:18

The past few days have led me

0:39:250:39:26

to a much darker version of nationalism than I expected.

0:39:260:39:30

And as one of Russia's most high-profile nationalists,

0:39:320:39:35

I feel I've got to challenge Demushkin on what I've seen.

0:39:350:39:40

But to get to him, I'm going to have to go through Vadim.

0:39:400:39:43

-Are you all right?

-Huh?

-Are you all right?

-Yeah, I'm good.

0:39:490:39:52

You've been very quiet for the last 20 minutes or so.

0:39:520:39:55

I was never...noisy, or something.

0:40:010:40:04

-Come on.

-That's us?

0:40:060:40:08

'They've used ME. Now I'm going to use them.

0:40:100:40:13

'Even if it means spending more time with someone I don't trust.'

0:40:130:40:17

-Be my guest.

-Thank you.

0:40:170:40:18

Come on.

0:40:220:40:23

-That's it.

-This is your room?

-Yeah.

0:40:250:40:27

I see.

0:40:270:40:28

Holy cow, what's all this here?

0:40:280:40:31

That's my little hobby.

0:40:310:40:32

REGGIE LAUGHS

0:40:320:40:34

It's more than a little one! Let me put my gloves down.

0:40:340:40:37

In fact, I should probably put my gloves on

0:40:370:40:39

so I don't leave any prints.

0:40:390:40:40

You noticed knives.

0:40:400:40:41

You didn't notice this.

0:40:410:40:43

HE LAUGHS

0:40:430:40:44

-Holy shit. Are they real guns?

-No, BBs.

0:40:440:40:47

Can you understand why I'd be really surprised

0:40:490:40:51

that you have this many weapons?

0:40:510:40:52

I mean, why do you need a butterfly knife?

0:40:520:40:56

-It's not butterfly.

-What kind of knife is this?

0:40:560:40:58

That is just a simple...

0:40:580:41:01

pocket knife.

0:41:020:41:04

-Nothing special.

-Jesus.

0:41:110:41:13

-Having so many knifes, to me...

-For EDC - everyday carrying -

0:41:150:41:19

I have much more...smaller knife.

0:41:190:41:23

-So you have that in your pocket at all times?

-Every day.

0:41:230:41:26

You know, you wake up in the morning

0:41:260:41:30

and...you get used to take shower or clean your teeth.

0:41:300:41:35

And I get used to... taking a knife with me.

0:41:350:41:39

I sit in the office and someone has a birthday,

0:41:390:41:42

he brought...

0:41:420:41:44

cake

0:41:440:41:46

and someone has to slice it.

0:41:460:41:49

And the practice shows that among 15 men in my office -

0:41:490:41:56

nobody has knife.

0:41:560:41:57

And they every time ask me, "Vadim, do you have knife?"

0:41:570:42:03

I say, "What a stupid question, of course I have a knife!"

0:42:030:42:07

That's it. I think knives are one of the most beautiful human creations.

0:42:070:42:14

This one...is masterpiece.

0:42:140:42:18

It's completely legal in Russia

0:42:180:42:20

and it's strong and...useful.

0:42:200:42:25

What would you use it for?

0:42:250:42:26

This is best combat knife ever.

0:42:260:42:30

These knives, we are training in rubber...

0:42:300:42:34

-Training?

-Knife fight.

0:42:340:42:37

I am knife-fight instructor.

0:42:370:42:40

-Don't be scared.

-Right. OK.

0:42:430:42:46

All right, so you collect these... and you train.

0:42:460:42:50

And have you ever had to use your knife in an emergency on the street?

0:42:500:42:53

Never.

0:42:530:42:55

And even I had...

0:42:550:42:58

I would never talk about it.

0:42:580:43:01

That's a forbidden question.

0:43:010:43:04

I'm sorry.

0:43:050:43:07

-Forbidden where?

-Everywhere.

0:43:070:43:10

You have no right to ask for it

0:43:100:43:14

and you must to ask...not to ask it.

0:43:140:43:19

So if you had used your knife,

0:43:220:43:23

-you would never talk about it?

-Yes, of course.

0:43:230:43:25

-Have you used your knife?

-Never.

0:43:270:43:29

In wrong cases, never.

0:43:300:43:33

Vadim has invited me to a club -

0:43:360:43:39

a knife-fighting club -

0:43:390:43:41

and we're meeting his mates in the metro.

0:43:410:43:43

VADIM SPEAKS IN RUSSIAN

0:43:430:43:46

It was only later I found out

0:43:580:44:01

that Vadim was trying to censor his friends...

0:44:010:44:03

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

VADIM SPEAKS IN RUSSIAN

0:44:470:44:49

If I'd have known what he was saying at the time,

0:44:530:44:56

I'd have been far more wary about joining the fight club.

0:44:560:44:59

I'm nervous enough as it is,

0:45:150:45:18

but then Demushkin shows up

0:45:180:45:19

and it becomes clear he is the one leading the training.

Coming from London, where knife crime is such a problem,

0:46:310:46:34

it's really shocking here

0:46:340:46:36

that they're actually teaching kids how to use them.

0:46:360:46:39

-What's your name?

-Gyorgy.

0:46:390:46:41

-How old are you?

-14.

0:46:410:46:44

-Nice to meet you. You're 14?

-Yeah.

0:46:440:46:46

Wow. 14. I mean, you're much younger than I thought.

0:46:460:46:49

What's your reason for joining this class?

0:46:490:46:51

Uh...

0:46:510:46:52

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:46:520:46:55

Wow. And was this guy an immigrant?

0:47:060:47:08

You're going to go back? OK, thanks, nice to meet you.

0:47:120:47:14

There's a kid I just met

0:47:170:47:19

-who was 14 years old.

-14?

-Yeah.

0:47:190:47:21

What's the minimum age you can allow to join the club?

0:47:210:47:24

Mm...

0:47:250:47:27

14 years old. Why not?

0:47:270:47:30

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:47:300:47:33

You want me up?

0:47:330:47:35

Do I need this?

0:47:350:47:37

HE ADDRESSES SOMEONE IN RUSSIAN

0:47:400:47:42

Here we go.

0:47:430:47:44

And he's got his guy filming it for his website or YouTube or something.

0:47:470:47:53

-INTERPRETER:

-Strongly...

0:47:590:48:01

-Grab stronger.

-All right.

0:48:080:48:09

Have you ever been attacked before, then?

0:48:190:48:21

And who was it that was attacking you?

0:48:300:48:32

Five...

0:48:440:48:46

Five of them. And how did you survive that attack?

0:48:460:48:50

INTERPRETER SPEAKS IN RUSSIAN

0:48:500:48:52

They're only using rubber knives,

0:48:560:48:58

but these guys look like they know exactly what it takes

0:48:580:49:01

to inflict serious damage on someone,

0:49:010:49:04

and with knife attacks on immigrants going up,

0:49:040:49:07

I can't help but feel this kind of training is doing nothing

0:49:070:49:10

to make the situation any better.

0:49:100:49:12

But it's not just economic migrants who are in danger.

0:49:140:49:18

Francis, a political refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo,

0:49:180:49:21

was welcomed by Russia

0:49:210:49:23

but attacked simply because his face doesn't fit.

0:49:230:49:26

-Hello.

-Hello.

-Hey - Francis?

-Hey.

0:49:260:49:29

Pleasure to meet you. How are you doing?

0:49:290:49:31

-I'm good, thank you.

-Nice to meet you.

0:49:310:49:32

-Can I just grab a seat here?

-Yeah, of course.

0:49:320:49:35

Sure.

0:49:350:49:36

So, what's the story? What happened, Francis?

0:49:360:49:39

I was going to take the bus, going to go home,

0:49:390:49:42

and I saw three guys

0:49:420:49:46

and they called me, "Nigger...

0:49:460:49:47

"..come here."

0:49:490:49:50

I came and I say, "My name is Francis.

0:49:520:49:55

"Don't call me nigger."

0:49:550:49:57

He said it again, "Nigger, can I take a picture of you and my friend?"

0:49:570:50:04

I said, "Please, my name is Francis. Don't call me nigger."

0:50:040:50:08

"OK, OK, OK, OK."

0:50:090:50:11

They took pictures and, um...after, they said to me,

0:50:110:50:16

"Nigger, come, come here."

0:50:160:50:19

And they said to me, "Man, you are nigger, but you dress well."

0:50:190:50:25

In that moment, he...he got a big knife.

0:50:250:50:30

A knife, like this.

0:50:300:50:33

He said to me, "Give me your coat."

0:50:330:50:36

I said, "I can't, it's very cold. Please...no."

0:50:360:50:41

In that time, they begin to kick me.

0:50:410:50:43

That man were big, very big.

0:50:450:50:48

He put the sword to my body.

0:50:480:50:51

He opened, like a pig, my body.

0:50:510:50:54

I've got the scar, here till here.

0:50:540:50:58

And begin to kick me. They kick me, they kick me. I was...

0:50:580:51:02

HE SIGHS

0:51:020:51:04

And I wake up at the hospital.

0:51:060:51:09

I'm so sorry to hear what you've, um...what you've experienced.

0:51:130:51:16

Why do you think that they have such an issue

0:51:160:51:19

with immigrants such as yourself?

0:51:190:51:21

I don't know.

0:51:220:51:23

We are the same, you see.

0:51:260:51:29

No difference, it's only in the colour of our skin.

0:51:290:51:34

We are also human being.

0:51:350:51:37

I don't understand nationalist peoples.

0:51:380:51:41

To hate immigrants...

0:51:420:51:44

I don't understand that kind of behaviour.

0:51:460:51:49

Strange. Very strange.

0:51:490:51:52

When you hear something like Francis' story

0:51:550:51:57

and you've experienced the knife-fighting club like I have,

0:51:570:52:00

there's a horrible connection between the two.

0:52:000:52:03

Dmitry is a man leading a whole heap of nationalist men and women.

0:52:040:52:09

And if it is extreme nationalists

0:52:110:52:13

who are attacking people like Francis,

0:52:130:52:16

if Dmitry isn't stopping it and stopping that kind of activity,

0:52:160:52:21

he's...he's partly responsible.

0:52:210:52:23

I'm leaving Moscow tomorrow,

0:52:260:52:28

but the extra time I've spent with Vadim's paid off.

0:52:280:52:31

Demushkin's agreed to meet for one final chat.

0:52:310:52:34

The knife-fighting part of what it means to be nationalist -

0:52:360:52:40

in your eyes, anyway - seems to be quite a big thing.

0:52:400:52:43

It seems to be quite important to you and what you stand for.

0:52:430:52:46

I mean, you've got a knife on your T-shirt today,

0:52:460:52:49

you lead this knife-fighting club as well

0:52:490:52:51

and I've met immigrants who have been attacked by nationalists

0:52:510:52:55

and...nearly died.

0:52:550:52:57

Ah...

0:52:570:52:59

RUSSIAN IN TRANSLATION:

0:52:590:53:02

Regardless of what the immigrants are doing,

0:53:230:53:25

you're essentially the head of the nationalist movement -

0:53:250:53:28

you're a figurehead, you're a face for it.

0:53:280:53:30

Can you not see that there's some sort of responsibility

0:53:300:53:33

that you should take?

0:53:330:53:34

So do you think that you'll be the leader of the nationalists for ever?

0:54:050:54:08

Is this something that you see yourself doing

0:54:080:54:10

until you're an old man?

0:54:100:54:12

All right. Look, um...thank you for talking to me again.

0:54:280:54:30

All right.

0:54:360:54:37

Thank you very much, thank you. Take care. Thanks.

0:54:430:54:47

Nationalism has always been strong in Russia

0:55:020:55:05

and the extremists only really occupy the fringes.

0:55:050:55:08

But now, with polls suggesting that around 80% of Muscovites

0:55:080:55:12

favour the deportation of immigrant workers,

0:55:120:55:15

this may be changing.

0:55:150:55:17

And with the far right gaining ground not just in Russia,

0:55:180:55:21

but across Europe, what Demushkin stands for

0:55:210:55:25

may worryingly become closer to the mainstream.

0:55:250:55:28

There is absolutely nothing wrong with

0:55:280:55:30

being proud of who you are and where you come from.

0:55:300:55:32

There's nothing wrong with

0:55:320:55:33

being proud of your heritage and your culture.

0:55:330:55:36

I think the...I think the problem with nationalism

0:55:360:55:39

is that there is a massive dark side to it.

0:55:390:55:42

There are a lot of people that I've met

0:55:420:55:44

who aren't necessarily just proud of who they are,

0:55:440:55:47

but they also feel that the land that they're from

0:55:470:55:51

should belong to just them.

0:55:510:55:53

And what that is causing is a...a scary reaction

0:55:530:55:59

to anybody that isn't Russian.
