Across the country,

0:00:020:00:03

thousands of farming families work tirelessly around the clock.

0:00:030:00:07

Whoa!

0:00:070:00:08

Stop arguing, girls. Give over.

0:00:080:00:11

SHRILL WHISTLE

0:00:110:00:14

But there's one day each year...

0:00:140:00:16

Hey!

0:00:160:00:17

..when they get to leave the daily routine behind.

0:00:170:00:20

Right, here we come, Dorset.

0:00:200:00:22

These are show days...

0:00:230:00:24

-OVER TANNOY:

-A very, very warm welcome to Melplash Show.

0:00:240:00:27

..when they come together as a community...

0:00:270:00:29

APPLAUSE

0:00:290:00:31

..to showcase the fruits of their labour...

0:00:310:00:33

I just LOVE showing my girls off.

0:00:330:00:36

..and try to win prizes for their breed champions...

0:00:370:00:40

-Smashed it.

-SHEEP BLEATS

0:00:400:00:42

..and award-winning produce...

0:00:420:00:43

That's really nice cheese, that.

0:00:430:00:45

LAMB BLEATS

0:00:450:00:46

It was very good, darling.

0:00:470:00:49

There will be highs...

0:00:490:00:51

That's what we want to see, red. Red is the best.

0:00:510:00:53

..and lows...

0:00:530:00:55

She's not happy enough to go.

0:00:550:00:57

..for the dedicated farmers

0:00:570:00:58

who give everything to walk away a champion.

0:00:580:01:03

Fingers crossed!

0:01:030:01:04

Each year in Britain, over a million pigs are sent to market.

0:01:120:01:16

Today, we're meeting two farming families

0:01:190:01:21

who make a living from supplying this huge demand.

0:01:210:01:25

-Come on, Ginge!

-HE WHISTLES

0:01:260:01:28

Farmers Barbara Warden,

0:01:290:01:31

and Clive and Hilary Royal, with daughter Rebecca,

0:01:310:01:34

are eagerly preparing for the country's biggest

0:01:340:01:36

Tamworth pig competition.

0:01:360:01:38

It's a chance to enjoy a day out from the farm,

0:01:410:01:44

but scooping prizes will also help their business to flourish.

0:01:440:01:49

However, success will depend on the unpredictable nature

0:01:500:01:53

of these high-spirited livestock.

0:01:530:01:56

No!

0:01:560:01:57

These hilly slopes of South Wales' Brecon Beacons

0:02:060:02:09

are home to farmer Barbara...

0:02:090:02:11

That'll do for them.

0:02:120:02:14

..the proud owner of 51 Tamworth pigs.

0:02:140:02:17

-Up the field.

-PIG GRUNTS

0:02:200:02:22

I'm the main worker on the farm here.

0:02:250:02:28

My husband helps.

0:02:280:02:30

He does the feeding at night.

0:02:300:02:31

We have a trade-off there - I cook the dinner and he feeds.

0:02:310:02:35

Their son, Ceri,

0:02:360:02:37

also lends a much-needed helping hand on the farm.

0:02:370:02:41

Nice weather today, ain't it?

0:02:420:02:43

But it's no chore for him.

0:02:430:02:45

'You're looking after the animals.'

0:02:450:02:48

Go on.

0:02:480:02:49

'You're feeding them, you're bringing them up.'

0:02:490:02:51

Yeah, you're giving them a good life. Um...

0:02:510:02:54

So I am passionate about it, and you've got to do it the best way.

0:02:540:02:58

You all right, gorgeous?

0:02:580:02:59

PIG GRUNTS

0:02:590:03:00

We went for Tamworths because they're the best breed, really,

0:03:000:03:04

to cope with the conditions we get in the winter up here,

0:03:040:03:07

cos it can be very windy and very cold.

0:03:070:03:10

Tamworths are one of our oldest breed of pig.

0:03:120:03:15

They prefer to be out, really,

0:03:150:03:16

but they haven't got a woolly coat like a sheep has,

0:03:160:03:19

and they're much better off indoors.

0:03:190:03:21

A nice, big straw barn with plenty of freedom, plenty of space.

0:03:220:03:27

Come on, piggies.

0:03:280:03:29

Housing the pigs like this is a huge amount of work.

0:03:300:03:33

At 9am each day, Barbara has to muck out their living quarters,

0:03:330:03:38

and this is more complicated than it sounds.

0:03:380:03:41

Come here. Come on, pigs.

0:03:410:03:43

'We never let out two litters at the same time

0:03:430:03:45

'because we aren't able to tell

0:03:450:03:47

'which piglet belongs in which litter.'

0:03:470:03:49

And when they go back in, if they've got the wrong piglet in the litter,

0:03:540:03:58

comes back, then they start fighting.

0:03:580:04:01

With the piglets safely separated, the daily muck-out begins.

0:04:030:04:07

So, awful smelly.

0:04:100:04:11

But that's the nature of the game.

0:04:130:04:15

Right.

0:04:170:04:18

I've got the straw.

0:04:180:04:20

But this workload never stops.

0:04:210:04:23

We muck out every day of the year, including Christmas Day.

0:04:230:04:27

Christmas Day is very difficult,

0:04:270:04:29

because we have to be in church for ten o'clock.

0:04:290:04:31

It's tough in the winter when it's very, very cold,

0:04:310:04:34

when all the water freezes.

0:04:340:04:36

Very often the only tap working is the one in the bathroom,

0:04:360:04:39

so we have to have a hosepipe,

0:04:390:04:41

and filling buckets for anything up to 80 pigs back in the past

0:04:410:04:44

was a terrific effort.

0:04:440:04:47

Come on, out you go. Shhh! Shhh! Go on. Shhh!

0:04:470:04:50

'If you enjoy what you're doing it's never hard, is it?'

0:04:500:04:53

I really have a passion for doing what we're doing,

0:04:530:04:55

and breeding young animals - this is what it's all about.

0:04:550:04:59

And then, eating them at the end!

0:04:590:05:01

PIGLET SNORTS

0:05:020:05:04

OK, that's finished, then. Jolly good.

0:05:040:05:06

As well as selling her pigs on for meat,

0:05:120:05:15

she also sells them for breeding,

0:05:150:05:17

and that's where the shows come in...

0:05:170:05:20

because prizes can mean more profit.

0:05:200:05:23

Don't tell my husband this,

0:05:240:05:25

but we do do a lot more shows than I think he really counts up.

0:05:250:05:28

He wants me to cut down.

0:05:290:05:31

But I don't! I'm not going to cut down.

0:05:310:05:33

Why should I? I'm not going to retire.

0:05:330:05:36

Over in Somerset,

0:05:450:05:47

retired doctors Hilary and Clive

0:05:470:05:49

live on a six-acre smallholding with daughter, Rebecca.

0:05:490:05:52

Come on, girlies!

0:05:520:05:54

Keen to make use of the land and their time,

0:05:580:06:01

they took up breeding Oxford Sandy and Black pigs.

0:06:010:06:05

They are one of the oldest British breeds,

0:06:120:06:14

and have been brought back from the brink of extinction.

0:06:140:06:17

Oh! Stop biting!

0:06:170:06:20

Beggar, aren't you?

0:06:200:06:21

There you go.

0:06:210:06:23

Farms like these are helping to ensure their survival.

0:06:240:06:28

Caring for their pigs was just the tonic they needed on retiring.

0:06:350:06:39

Hilary had been a GP...

0:06:400:06:43

and Clive an Army surgeon.

0:06:430:06:45

If you have given up a very busy job, you need something that's...

0:06:450:06:50

comparably busy.

0:06:500:06:52

They're two absorbing lifestyles.

0:06:570:07:00

They're so different, but have similarities going through them -

0:07:000:07:03

if you're looking after animals and looking after patients...

0:07:030:07:08

And there's a LOT of looking after.

0:07:080:07:10

One of Clive's daily jobs, come rain or shine, is to feed their 15 pigs.

0:07:100:07:16

Weaners, and that's for the sow...

0:07:200:07:23

The feeding's a bit like my ward rounds of the old days -

0:07:230:07:26

you do your morning round and your evening round,

0:07:260:07:30

and get 'em settled down.

0:07:300:07:32

But the morning round is... Well, I enjoy it

0:07:320:07:34

cos it gets you up, especially if the weather's nice,

0:07:340:07:37

and you do it early, and they appreciate it.

0:07:370:07:40

And then, we're off. Ugh!

0:07:410:07:43

So, this is the first pen.

0:07:510:07:52

So, there's three girls here, so I'll just go and throw the stuff in.

0:07:520:07:55

Oh!

0:07:550:07:56

-HE WHISTLES

-Come on, girls.

0:07:580:08:01

There you go, girls.

0:08:020:08:03

Not quite the same as the rounds in a military hospital,

0:08:030:08:06

but Clive is equally attentive,

0:08:060:08:09

especially when he can see that one of the pigs

0:08:090:08:12

has more than food on its mind.

0:08:120:08:14

She's what's called "hogging,"

0:08:150:08:17

which is going to be interesting at the show.

0:08:170:08:19

It seems that what looks like having a back scratch

0:08:190:08:22

is actually an indication that a pig is looking to mate.

0:08:220:08:27

Being so hands-on with the breeding

0:08:270:08:29

means Clive is quite happy not to get involved

0:08:290:08:32

with the farm's paperwork.

0:08:320:08:33

Only two this morning.

0:08:330:08:35

Luckily, his daughter Rebecca is on hand.

0:08:350:08:39

Rebecca's already running the business

0:08:390:08:41

with Hilary doing the accounting side.

0:08:410:08:43

No paperwork for me, which is very desirable.

0:08:430:08:47

Some farms struggle to keep the next generation involved,

0:08:480:08:52

but Rebecca is so keen, she's started studying rural accountancy.

0:08:520:08:56

The farm is an incredibly important part in producing

0:09:000:09:03

our food, and everything,

0:09:030:09:05

and I just love the fact that I can play a small part in it.

0:09:050:09:10

They may share a passion for working the land, but they harbour a keen

0:09:120:09:16

father-daughter rivalry.

0:09:160:09:18

This even stretches to how to slice the cured coppa ham

0:09:190:09:23

they produce on the farm.

0:09:230:09:25

Dad and I have got an interesting relationship

0:09:300:09:33

when it comes down to our butchery.

0:09:330:09:34

With his old profession, he believes he's better,

0:09:340:09:38

but not necessarily quicker.

0:09:380:09:40

I like to do it perfectly, Rebecca likes to do it quickly.

0:09:400:09:43

Yes, Rebecca always likes to finish first.

0:09:430:09:47

But this rivalry is put aside when it comes to the shows.

0:09:500:09:55

We always go to try and win.

0:09:550:09:58

It really puts our name out there.

0:09:580:10:01

We always hope that our pigs will do well against everyone else.

0:10:010:10:05

Back in the Brecon Beacons,

0:10:180:10:20

Barbara's spending time with some of her lodgers -

0:10:200:10:22

her seven-week-old piglets.

0:10:220:10:24

Come on, pigs.

0:10:260:10:27

Right, give me the lettuce.

0:10:290:10:30

Here we are.

0:10:300:10:31

They've got a lovely lettuce today to play football with.

0:10:330:10:36

Let's see if they play rugby well. Here you are, pigs.

0:10:360:10:40

There you are. Now, then.

0:10:420:10:44

There's the rugby team.

0:10:440:10:45

There's 15 weaners now.

0:10:510:10:53

The other 15 have been sold already, and gone to new homes.

0:10:530:10:56

And they will see Christmas -

0:10:560:10:58

they'll see it on the table, I'm afraid.

0:10:580:11:00

There we are - it didn't take long to demolish that.

0:11:010:11:04

Right. Come with me, I've got something special to show you.

0:11:080:11:13

However, not all are destined for the table.

0:11:130:11:16

Look over here at the newborn litter.

0:11:160:11:19

These piglets are born from prize-winning stock,

0:11:220:11:24

and are extremely valuable to Barbara.

0:11:240:11:28

Two of the newborn piglets are gilts -

0:11:280:11:31

in other words, young females -

0:11:310:11:33

and I've checked them over already when they were born,

0:11:330:11:36

and it looks to me like they could be

0:11:360:11:38

potential show pigs for next year.

0:11:380:11:40

And Barbara knows the signs.

0:11:400:11:43

A future champion must have a perfect line of teats.

0:11:430:11:47

Their teats have to be in pairs, and they need 12 to 14 teats per sow.

0:11:510:11:56

Other breeds need more teats because they have larger litters.

0:11:560:12:00

Oh, thank you(!) Mind your feet.

0:12:000:12:02

Thank you(!) Shhh!

0:12:050:12:07

It's very important even a boar has the correct number of teats

0:12:070:12:10

underneath in the correct placement,

0:12:100:12:12

because he's going to pass those on to his daughters,

0:12:120:12:16

and you don't want to have misplaced teats.

0:12:160:12:19

PIGS SQUEAL

0:12:190:12:21

Stop arguing, girls! Give over!

0:12:210:12:23

As well as Jasper's curtain call,

0:12:300:12:33

the upcoming show will be the last competition

0:12:330:12:35

for Rebecca's favourite pig, Doris.

0:12:350:12:38

Come on. There you go, come on.

0:12:380:12:41

Out you come!

0:12:410:12:42

I love Doris.

0:12:430:12:44

She was born on the property.

0:12:450:12:47

Don't drink it! No!

0:12:470:12:50

It's got shampoo in, you stupid pig!

0:12:500:12:53

She's just my pig.

0:12:540:12:56

We have a good bond.

0:12:560:12:58

She tends to be much better behaved for me than for Dad and Mum.

0:12:580:13:03

She is definitely the one with the most attitude.

0:13:030:13:07

Right, come on.

0:13:080:13:10

They're very strong, pigs.

0:13:110:13:13

That's all the washing she's going to take for today.

0:13:200:13:23

Feisty pigs are difficult to manage,

0:13:230:13:26

which is why they use a board and stick when they're in the showring.

0:13:260:13:29

Hopefully, it will focus them in one direction, and stop them

0:13:320:13:36

being distracted by other pigs.

0:13:360:13:38

And a gentle tap with the stick should keep them

0:13:380:13:41

on the straight and narrow.

0:13:410:13:43

Of course, this all sounds good in theory.

0:13:440:13:47

It is an occupational hazard.

0:13:550:13:56

If a pig takes it into their mind

0:13:560:13:58

that they're just going to go for a run,

0:13:580:14:00

they'll go for a run.

0:14:000:14:02

You need to be quite fit to manage them.

0:14:040:14:07

DUCKS QUACK

0:14:070:14:09

Luckily, in the showring, it is a dedicated area.

0:14:090:14:13

They can run, but they can't run that far.

0:14:130:14:16

Unlike here, where they've got a few acres to run in if they want to.

0:14:200:14:24

And as Bessie did want to this afternoon!

0:14:250:14:28

PIG GRUNTS

0:14:290:14:31

Back over the border in Wales,

0:14:320:14:35

the other farm has had their fair share of chasing pigs.

0:14:350:14:39

I used to have to take the pigs round the ring in the early days,

0:14:390:14:43

but I gave that up.

0:14:430:14:45

When you're showing pigs, you keep your legs together.

0:14:460:14:48

If you don't, you end up with a pig running between your legs,

0:14:480:14:52

and you ride the pig round.

0:14:520:14:53

Fortunately, the pig you were on was quite a small one.

0:14:530:14:56

But that was quite embarrassing, really.

0:14:560:14:58

I keep my legs together!

0:15:000:15:01

HE LAUGHS

0:15:010:15:03

Ah!

0:15:030:15:04

0:15:040:15:06

It's finally time for both families to head off to the show.

0:15:100:15:13

All year round, they've been building up to this day.

0:15:130:15:17

Straight back.

0:15:210:15:22

Slowly... Whoa!

0:15:230:15:24

The next big challenge is to load the pigs.

0:15:270:15:31

It's taken years for the families to breed these potential winners,

0:15:310:15:34

so they can only hope they're willing to co-operate.

0:15:340:15:37

There we are.

0:15:390:15:40

All we've got to do now is load the pigs, and we're ready for off.

0:15:400:15:43

On the other farm, troublesome Doris is already loaded up.

0:15:440:15:48

She's really feisty, isn't she?

0:15:480:15:50

Cos she's already moved the whole flipping frame around.

0:15:500:15:53

But they will have to open the gate to let the others in, and hope that

0:15:530:15:57

Doris doesn't make a run for it.

0:15:570:15:59

I'll just...

0:15:590:16:00

She'll try and get out if we open up.

0:16:010:16:04

If she does do a blinder, which she's trying to,

0:16:040:16:06

which is a bit frustrating...

0:16:060:16:08

It should be fine, but this is just a precaution

0:16:100:16:12

that we won't be chasing pigs all around.

0:16:120:16:15

Come on, then. Showtime!

0:16:170:16:19

-Come on!

-There we go, good girl. This way.

0:16:190:16:23

-This way.

-Yeah, just get it open.

0:16:230:16:25

Come on, then. This way. No, ch-ch-ch-ch...

0:16:250:16:28

Oh, no, she's gone around that way.

0:16:280:16:30

But Doris is trying to make a break for it.

0:16:300:16:33

-No, Dad, close it again.

-Well, if you just get her out that way...

0:16:330:16:36

She won't, she's...

0:16:360:16:38

-Yeah... Oh...

-I can't do it.

0:16:380:16:40

-I know, they're going to fight.

-These two are going to fight.

0:16:400:16:43

-Yeah.

-Yeah, they are. Come on.

0:16:430:16:45

Dad, just let her out if she wants to come out.

0:16:470:16:49

Is she coming up?

0:16:490:16:51

Yeah... No, Doris isn't going to the show.

0:16:510:16:54

-She's not going to...?

-She's not going to the show.

-OK.

0:16:540:16:56

Doris is staying. I'm sorry, she's not happy enough to go,

0:16:590:17:02

and I'm not going to put her through it.

0:17:020:17:04

If she's not happy with the run-up to it,

0:17:040:17:06

she won't be happy down at the showring.

0:17:060:17:08

The welfare of the animals always comes first.

0:17:100:17:13

Come on. This way.

0:17:140:17:15

And luckily, all the other pigs seem happy at the prospect of a trip.

0:17:150:17:20

Come on, girls. Off to the show.

0:17:200:17:22

-Good girl. Good girl.

-There's a good girl.

0:17:220:17:25

All three are going in together.

0:17:250:17:27

-That's it.

-All done, so that's good.

0:17:320:17:35

Right. That's the pigs loaded.

0:17:350:17:38

Right, here we come, Dorset.

0:17:410:17:43

The Dorset County Agricultural Show is beginning to stir.

0:17:560:18:01

Home to one of the largest pig championships in the country,

0:18:010:18:04

this prestigious event is a highlight of the farming calendar.

0:18:040:18:08

The pigs are still asleep.

0:18:190:18:21

But out on the campsite,

0:18:240:18:25

Clive and Rebecca are already worrying how they will perform.

0:18:250:18:30

I'm hoping they've now got their mind-set into the show,

0:18:300:18:35

and they'll behave, fingers crossed.

0:18:350:18:37

If not, you'll see me running round the showring after a pig.

0:18:370:18:40

They've got their show snouts on.

0:18:400:18:41

-Yeah.

-HE CHUCKLES

0:18:410:18:43

-We're ready to go...

-Yeah.

-..just got to go and brush 'em up.

0:18:430:18:47

-I'd better get into my glad rags for showing.

-Yeah.

0:18:480:18:51

Cos I'm not going to win any prizes like this.

0:18:510:18:53

-No.

-Let's go.

0:18:530:18:55

Meanwhile, Barbara's also been up for hours.

0:19:000:19:03

First thing this morning, we gave them a drink of water,

0:19:030:19:06

we gave them their feed.

0:19:060:19:07

They had about three pounds of nuts.

0:19:070:19:10

They're now sleeping off their breakfast.

0:19:100:19:11

PIGS SQUEAL

0:19:180:19:20

You're going straight down.

0:19:200:19:22

I have already been round and had a look at the opposition.

0:19:250:19:28

The standard of pigs here today is extremely high.

0:19:280:19:32

It's the judge's opinion on the day, and we have to respect that

0:19:330:19:37

whatever we think about it.

0:19:370:19:39

And I really don't mind, because I know my pigs are the best!

0:19:390:19:42

SHE CHUCKLES

0:19:420:19:44

As competition time approaches, spectators fill the showground.

0:19:470:19:51

Over 50,000 people will come to experience

0:19:510:19:54

the very best of Dorset's country life.

0:19:540:19:57

For a lot of these pedigree breeders,

0:20:000:20:02

this is the culmination of all their kind of hard work over the year...

0:20:020:20:05

So, yeah, it's absolutely marvellous from that point of view.

0:20:050:20:08

It's 9am, and this year's pig competition is about to begin.

0:20:120:20:17

We all wear a white coat in the ring.

0:20:190:20:21

If they get really badly soiled at any point,

0:20:210:20:23

we have to change them, and put another white coat on.

0:20:230:20:26

Keeping them white is another matter.

0:20:260:20:28

Both families have done everything they can.

0:20:280:20:31

Months of planning,

0:20:310:20:32

feeding and grooming have all come down to this moment.

0:20:320:20:36

-CLIVE:

-Half the thrill is getting your white coat on

0:20:360:20:38

and going in the ring,

0:20:380:20:40

and if the judge likes what we've produced,

0:20:400:20:42

it'll be the icing on the cake.

0:20:420:20:45

Now we're ready.

0:20:450:20:46

We weren't ready five minutes ago, but we're sort of ready now.

0:20:460:20:49

First into the ring will be Barbara's champion boar, Jasper.

0:20:520:20:56

We're going to have to be careful

0:20:560:20:57

with one of our other competitors, Andrew.

0:20:570:20:59

He's just had a hip replacement, and the last thing he wants is to be

0:20:590:21:03

bowled over in the ring.

0:21:030:21:05

Today's judge is Brian Merry.

0:21:110:21:13

Really looking forward to this day.

0:21:150:21:18

Hopefully, they'll be some nice pigs here to be judged.

0:21:180:21:22

I think everybody likes pigs, don't they?

0:21:220:21:24

And in Jasper goes.

0:21:240:21:26

He's competing against two others in this round.

0:21:280:21:31

All boars must have two handlers leading them round.

0:21:330:21:36

They can be extremely dangerous.

0:21:380:21:40

If even slightly provoked, these males can attack each other,

0:21:400:21:44

causing potentially fatal injuries.

0:21:440:21:46

Even judge Brian has to be extremely cautious.

0:21:540:21:57

Right. He's... Yeah.

0:22:020:22:04

But it's not Barbara and Ceri's victory this time.

0:22:040:22:07

APPLAUSE

0:22:070:22:08

Another boar trots away with first prize.

0:22:080:22:11

Jasper returns to the pen.

0:22:160:22:19

It's not quite the start Barbara had hoped for.

0:22:190:22:22

He came third... out of three, admittedly.

0:22:220:22:25

But not disappointed, the judge had an extremely valid reason.

0:22:250:22:28

-JASPER GRUNTS

-Oh, I know!

0:22:280:22:31

Stop it.

0:22:310:22:32

He's probably a little bit overweight at the moment,

0:22:320:22:34

which I tend to agree with.

0:22:340:22:36

-TANNOY:

-Mr and Mrs Honeywell's...

0:22:410:22:43

Clive and Rebecca are up next.

0:22:440:22:46

Pongo has never won before,

0:22:480:22:50

and today he's up against his nemesis...

0:22:500:22:53

..a champion boar who has beaten him three times before.

0:22:550:22:58

-Morning.

-Morning.

0:23:040:23:06

For these new pig breeders,

0:23:100:23:13

breaking into the top circle is proving very difficult.

0:23:130:23:17

Come on, boy. Walk up. There you go.

0:23:170:23:20

Walk on... Good boy.

0:23:200:23:22

The judge is taking his time to make up his mind.

0:23:240:23:28

But he's finally made a decision. APPLAUSE

0:23:310:23:34

And Pongo's done it at last!

0:23:340:23:37

-Well done.

-Thank you.

0:23:370:23:39

-CLIVE CHUCKLES

-Well done. Well done, boy.

0:23:410:23:44

-Get in!

-Well done.

-Get in there!

0:23:440:23:47

-Get in! Well...

-Yes, really good.

-..we're chuffed.

0:23:470:23:49

Dead chuffed.

0:23:490:23:51

Morning, gilts!

0:23:550:23:56

January gilts, ring one, numbers nine, ten, 11, 12 and 13.

0:23:560:24:01

Do we have a number 73? Tamworth sow?

0:24:030:24:06

After a disappointing start,

0:24:060:24:08

Barbara's hoping to do better with her female pigs,

0:24:080:24:11

but she's a little nervous about the judge.

0:24:110:24:14

The judge we have breeds his own pigs,

0:24:160:24:19

and is very well known for them.

0:24:190:24:21

This judge won't miss anything.

0:24:210:24:23

And we know our pigs aren't perfect. There isn't a perfect pig.

0:24:230:24:27

Please, Tamworth July gilts.

0:24:270:24:29

Right, we're ready.

0:24:290:24:30

In they go.

0:24:350:24:37

But it's not long before it's chaos in the ring.

0:24:380:24:41

The judge needs to inspect the four pigs.

0:24:450:24:48

-Sorry.

-But there's little chance of that...

0:24:490:24:52

PIG SNORTS

0:24:520:24:54

..unless the handlers can keep them still.

0:24:540:24:57

But he's finally managed to make a decision.

0:25:120:25:15

APPLAUSE

0:25:150:25:17

Ceri grabs the first prize...

0:25:180:25:21

..with Barbara bagging the second.

0:25:230:25:26

APPLAUSE

0:25:260:25:28

An excellent result, at last.

0:25:280:25:31

So, that was a lovely result, that was.

0:25:360:25:39

No! Ceri and I winning first and second in the class

0:25:390:25:42

was absolutely super.

0:25:420:25:44

I think the pigs really deserved it there.

0:25:440:25:47

I was very pleased with my pigs.

0:25:470:25:48

I did think they looked absolutely beautiful.

0:25:480:25:51

The day's judging is almost over.

0:25:540:25:57

-APPLAUSE

-OK.

-Thank you.

0:25:570:25:59

Barbara's landed another prize.

0:26:010:26:03

So has Clive.

0:26:030:26:05

And Rebecca's also won first prize for her sow, Herbie.

0:26:050:26:09

Thank you.

0:26:090:26:10

-Nice pig.

-Thank you very much!

0:26:100:26:13

It's made coming to the show worthwhile.

0:26:130:26:15

Now it's the final judging of the day,

0:26:170:26:20

and father and daughter have a chance to play out their rivalry.

0:26:200:26:24

It looks like I'm up against Dad, so we'll see how it goes.

0:26:240:26:28

-Come on.

-Here comes Dad with Pongo.

0:26:280:26:31

-Come on.

-And this is to win the prestigious title of Breed Champion.

0:26:310:26:36

Nothing like being up against your daughter in the champions!

0:26:390:26:43

This is a big opportunity for these relatively new pig farmers.

0:26:440:26:48

And they're up against three other winners.

0:26:500:26:53

Rebecca takes the crown...

0:26:550:26:57

winning hands down with her sow.

0:26:570:27:00

-You're the Champion Champion... The Breed Champion.

-Brilliant.

0:27:000:27:03

-Thank you.

-And the Best in Show.

0:27:030:27:05

Thank you very much.

0:27:050:27:07

-Brilliant.

-Nice pig.

0:27:070:27:08

But in the excitement, she's misplaced her winning pig.

0:27:080:27:12

-I've lost her now!

-Bring your pig back down, there we go.

-Sorry!

0:27:120:27:15

She's the ultimate Sandy and Black.

0:27:160:27:18

Everything about that pig was 100%.

0:27:180:27:21

It was right, it was correct, all the way through.

0:27:210:27:24

-One you'd take home, as they say.

-SHE GIGGLES

0:27:250:27:28

I'm extremely disappointed, mortified,

0:27:300:27:33

and it'll take at least three ciders to get over the effect that...

0:27:330:27:37

Rebecca won.

0:27:370:27:38

SHE LAUGHS

0:27:380:27:41

The day is almost over, and the crowds are keen to see

0:27:410:27:44

all the prize-winning pigs.

0:27:440:27:46

For the two families, all their work has certainly paid off.

0:27:490:27:55

It really makes the showing worth it when you do have that pig

0:27:550:27:59

that comes out on top.

0:27:590:28:01

It's what we put all the time and effort into.

0:28:010:28:04

PIGS GRUNT

0:28:040:28:06

It's been a lovely show here today.

0:28:080:28:10

We've thoroughly enjoyed ourselves,

0:28:100:28:12

but I'm very hot and very tired now!

0:28:120:28:15

First stop, the bar. Come on, let's go!
