Across the country,

0:00:020:00:03

thousands of farming families work tirelessly around the clock.

0:00:030:00:08

-Whoa!

-Stop arguing, girls.

0:00:080:00:10

Give over!

0:00:100:00:12

HE WHISTLES

0:00:120:00:14

But there's one day each year,

0:00:140:00:16

when they get to leave the daily routine behind.

0:00:160:00:20

Right, here we come, Dorset!

0:00:200:00:22

These are show days.

0:00:220:00:24

'A very, very warm welcome to the show.'

0:00:240:00:27

Where they come together as a community

0:00:270:00:30

to showcase the fruits of their labour.

0:00:300:00:33

I just love showing my girls off!

0:00:330:00:37

And try to win prizes for their breed champions.

0:00:370:00:40

Smashed it.

0:00:400:00:42

And award-winning produce.

0:00:420:00:44

That's really nice cheese, that.

0:00:440:00:46

It was very good, darling!

0:00:470:00:49

There will be highs...

0:00:490:00:51

That's what we want to see, red. Red is the best!

0:00:510:00:53

..and lows...

0:00:530:00:55

She's not happy enough to go.

0:00:550:00:57

..for the dedicated farmers who give everything to walk away a champion.

0:00:570:01:03

Fingers crossed!

0:01:030:01:04

There are nearly 10,000 dairy farms in the UK,

0:01:100:01:14

home to almost 2 million cows.

0:01:140:01:16

They supply us with millions of litres of milk every day,

0:01:160:01:21

and are the backbone of British agriculture.

0:01:210:01:24

COW MOOS

0:01:240:01:26

Come on.

0:01:260:01:27

Today, we're meeting two families from Kent.

0:01:280:01:31

Trevor Warne, and Holly Berin and Ben Dyer,

0:01:310:01:34

are getting ready to show their prize animals at this year's

0:01:340:01:38

County Show in Surrey.

0:01:380:01:40

It's their chance to show their hard work to the world,

0:01:400:01:43

and to compete for top prizes.

0:01:430:01:45

Come on, girl.

0:01:450:01:47

On a farm just outside Dover in Kent, it's the start of a new day.

0:01:560:02:00

It's 5am,

0:02:010:02:03

and Trevor and his son are already hard at work on the morning milking.

0:02:030:02:07

I love milk. I drink milk every day.

0:02:070:02:10

You know, I drink at least three pints, four pints a day.

0:02:100:02:14

It gives me that...whoa!

0:02:140:02:15

It gives me a buzz when I drink it.

0:02:150:02:18

I tell everybody, drink milk, it keeps you young!

0:02:180:02:20

For 42-year-old Trevor, dairy farming is a passion,

0:02:300:02:34

handed down through generations.

0:02:340:02:36

My father's side were all herdsman.

0:02:360:02:39

My dad, he's milked cows.

0:02:390:02:41

My grandad milked cows and my great-granddad, he milked cows.

0:02:410:02:45

It's a job, but it's also a hobby for me.

0:02:450:02:49

The skill of getting high yields out of cows, that drives me.

0:02:490:02:53

I mean, when the milk tanker comes

0:02:530:02:55

and you get the milk ticket to see how much milk's in the tank,

0:02:550:02:58

that gets me going big-time.

0:02:580:03:00

Big-time.

0:03:000:03:01

Trevor is the herd manager for the Goddard family,

0:03:040:03:08

who own the 660 cows on their 800-acre farm.

0:03:080:03:11

He starts at 4am, and he has a long day,

0:03:110:03:15

tending to the herd.

0:03:150:03:18

Luckily, he has a large family to help.

0:03:180:03:21

His wife, May, assists with the calves.

0:03:220:03:25

When they see the bags, that means food time!

0:03:250:03:29

His eldest son, 22-year-old Sonny, works on the farm,

0:03:310:03:35

and manages his own herd of Jersey cows.

0:03:350:03:37

While his other son, Olly, works the tractor, helping with the harvest.

0:03:390:03:43

Next comes six-year-old daughter Cleo, and five-year-old son Jude,

0:03:460:03:51

and four-year-old grandson, Tyler, who are all learning the ropes.

0:03:510:03:55

Even new baby, Hope, is being started early.

0:03:550:03:59

Hope loves the cows, she loves coming out on the farm.

0:03:590:04:03

I'm passionate about encouraging youngsters into this industry.

0:04:050:04:09

Right, you're going to lead it?

0:04:090:04:11

A lot of youngsters think it's just about work, work, work,

0:04:110:04:15

work, work - well, it is hard work.

0:04:150:04:18

Hold this hand, on here.

0:04:180:04:20

'But there's also a lot of passion, pride.'

0:04:200:04:23

'My young son, Jude, when he started to lead his calf,

0:04:240:04:27

'and he was so proud of himself.

0:04:270:04:29

'He wants to be like what I'm trying to do, and that's why I do it.'

0:04:290:04:33

My daughter, Cleo...

0:04:330:04:35

COW MOWS

0:04:350:04:38

She's like, "Dad, I want to train my calf."

0:04:380:04:40

Sometimes I have to calm her down, she's so keen!

0:04:400:04:43

SHE SCREAMS

0:04:430:04:44

There you go!

0:04:450:04:47

LAUGHTER

0:04:490:04:51

I think the mouse...

0:04:510:04:54

The mice have been chewing it!

0:04:540:04:56

While Trevor has his family to help him, just down the valley,

0:05:020:05:06

his friends Ben and Holly are doing their milking on their own.

0:05:060:05:10

Come on, girls.

0:05:110:05:13

Neither 30-year-old Ben, or 25-year-old Holly,

0:05:130:05:17

are from a farming background, but both were smitten from an early age.

0:05:170:05:22

We used to go for days out to the Kent County show, with my family,

0:05:220:05:26

and just loved watching the dairy cows, the Holsteins,

0:05:260:05:30

walking around the ring. It was something I really wanted to do.

0:05:300:05:33

Loved it, addicted to it.

0:05:330:05:35

I just really, really love animals, and found dairy farming.

0:05:350:05:39

And I wanted to have a go at milking cows.

0:05:390:05:44

And it just went from there.

0:05:440:05:46

I didn't look back.

0:05:460:05:48

It's this love for dairy farming that first brought them together,

0:05:480:05:52

when Ben needed help with some show cows.

0:05:520:05:54

I offered to help with clipping his cows, so yeah,

0:05:540:05:58

I clipped his first team, and...

0:05:580:06:01

She done a good job, so she stayed!

0:06:010:06:03

LAUGHTER

0:06:030:06:05

Pretty much!

0:06:050:06:06

Basically!

0:06:060:06:08

This very committed couple are employed by the Billings family

0:06:140:06:17

to manage the 340-strong herd, virtually on their own.

0:06:170:06:22

So, while Ben does the milking,

0:06:220:06:23

Holly has to give the hungry calves their breakfast.

0:06:230:06:27

Let's put these out.

0:06:270:06:30

So, every calf gets two litres.

0:06:300:06:34

I broke my two-litre jug.

0:06:340:06:36

So, I'm on a one-litre jug!

0:06:360:06:40

So, extra scooping!

0:06:400:06:41

Okey dokey, let's go!

0:06:420:06:44

I always talk to the cows, especially the calves as well.

0:06:460:06:49

Like...

0:06:490:06:50

Especially when you're teaching them to get onto the teats and stuff,

0:06:500:06:55

yeah, there's a lot of talking involved!

0:06:550:06:58

Like, you're coaxing them to do it,

0:06:580:07:01

so I'm just talking them through how to do it!

0:07:010:07:04

I sound so weird!

0:07:040:07:06

-Not that they've got a clue what we're going on about, but...

-No.

0:07:060:07:09

Ben and Holly's dream is to own a farm of their own,

0:07:090:07:13

so they've been buying calves, gradually, to build up a herd.

0:07:130:07:16

This is one of mine and Ben's calves.

0:07:160:07:19

We have three heifer calves,

0:07:190:07:21

we're going to rear them so we have our own nucleus herd here,

0:07:210:07:26

and two bulls.

0:07:260:07:28

We're looking to sell those towards the end of the year,

0:07:280:07:31

and hopefully make a little bit of money.

0:07:310:07:33

I love the face of this one, it's really, really different.

0:07:360:07:38

Yeah, unfortunately he's a male,

0:07:380:07:41

so he's going to go to market, but, yeah,

0:07:410:07:44

he's got a really standing-out face with his two white patches.

0:07:440:07:48

He was born, and I was like, "Wow!".

0:07:480:07:50

It was awesome.

0:07:500:07:52

The calves and the morning milking might be done,

0:07:580:08:01

but there are still hundreds of cows, over 200 acres,

0:08:010:08:04

to be checked and fed.

0:08:040:08:06

Come on.

0:08:080:08:10

So, these cows are just having a bit of a break at the moment.

0:08:100:08:13

This is sort of like holiday time for them.

0:08:130:08:16

So yeah, we come out here once a day and check them,

0:08:160:08:18

make sure there's nothing going on, make sure they're all all right.

0:08:180:08:22

Ben and Holly have been living and working together on this farm

0:08:220:08:26

for five years now.

0:08:260:08:28

Smooth!

0:08:310:08:32

Dairy farming is their life, as well as their passion.

0:08:320:08:37

You've got.. You've got to love cows to do this job, I think.

0:08:370:08:41

-Yeah, it's a huge commitment.

-Yeah.

0:08:410:08:44

Definitely, they're definitely part of your life.

0:08:460:08:49

I see these cows more than I see some of my friends and family, really.

0:08:490:08:53

Not only do they have to work such long hours,

0:08:570:09:00

dairy farmers also have to cope with an unpredictable milk market.

0:09:000:09:05

So, farmers are always looking for ways

0:09:050:09:07

to improve the amount of milk the herd produces,

0:09:070:09:10

using careful breeding and the latest technology.

0:09:100:09:13

On Trevor's farm, he's finished the milking.

0:09:220:09:24

It's 10am,

0:09:240:09:26

and time to check if any of his cows are ready to become mothers.

0:09:260:09:30

Come on, girls.

0:09:300:09:33

Come on, Hope. Get in there. Go on, girl.

0:09:330:09:35

What we're doing now is just checking if these cows are in heat.

0:09:350:09:40

After an examination, Trevor is happy that his cow, Hope,

0:09:400:09:43

is ready to begin the breeding programme.

0:09:430:09:46

Like many dairy farmers, Trevor buys in bull samples.

0:09:460:09:51

Breeding technology has become so advanced

0:09:510:09:54

that he can even choose what characteristics

0:09:540:09:56

Hope's calf will have.

0:09:560:09:58

Overall, she's great type,

0:09:580:09:59

but I'd like to increase her milk production.

0:09:590:10:02

And it won't increase hers, obviously.

0:10:020:10:04

I talk like it is going to increase her milk production,

0:10:040:10:07

but the next generation will be a lot better milker.

0:10:070:10:09

Breeding good stock is so important for Trevor and his family's future,

0:10:090:10:14

that he's willing to pay hundreds of pounds for samples.

0:10:140:10:17

That's what it comes in. Just give it little shake...

0:10:170:10:20

And then we're going to defrost it.

0:10:210:10:24

40 seconds.

0:10:240:10:25

BELL DINGS

0:10:260:10:28

Right.

0:10:300:10:31

That's it, it's gone.

0:10:370:10:40

Even for an expert farmer,

0:10:400:10:42

there is no certainty his cow will fall pregnant.

0:10:420:10:46

For now, all Trevor can do is keep his fingers crossed.

0:10:460:10:50

Meanwhile, Ben has noticed

0:11:010:11:04

that a cow due to give birth is lying down and not moving.

0:11:040:11:07

The calf could be stuck.

0:11:070:11:09

This has been calving for a few hours now,

0:11:100:11:13

not really getting on with anything,

0:11:130:11:14

so I'll put my hand in and give a check,

0:11:140:11:16

make sure it's in the right position.

0:11:160:11:19

Sometimes it can be backwards, or have a leg stuck, or something.

0:11:190:11:22

So I want to check and make sure it's all in the right place.

0:11:220:11:26

But this potential new mother doesn't want to play ball.

0:11:260:11:29

For these young farmers,

0:11:320:11:34

a successful birth is vital to the business.

0:11:340:11:37

They'll do anything they can to save the calf.

0:11:370:11:41

Let's get her in. Let's get her in.

0:11:410:11:43

COO MOOS

0:11:430:11:45

Eventually, they get her into the barn.

0:11:450:11:48

Ben gets a proper look at her, and finds the calf is out of position.

0:11:480:11:53

Yeah, she had one leg back behind the other one,

0:11:530:11:56

so I've just corrected that, pulled it up forwards.

0:11:560:11:59

Go through out there.

0:12:000:12:02

It's important for Ben to get the calf out as soon as possible.

0:12:020:12:05

I just want to get it out now...

0:12:070:12:09

Take that gate back a bit.

0:12:120:12:13

HE SIGHS

0:12:150:12:17

For Holly, these are the most challenging moments as a farmer.

0:12:200:12:24

And in just a few minutes,

0:12:260:12:28

Ben helps the cow give birth to a healthy calf.

0:12:280:12:31

A nice little heifer.

0:12:370:12:39

After thinking they were going to lose her,

0:12:400:12:43

it's a proud moment for everyone.

0:12:430:12:45

If Ben hadn't have gone in, we could have lost mum and calf.

0:12:490:12:52

She's had a lovely, healthy calving.

0:12:520:12:56

As you can see, she's licking it like crazy.

0:12:560:12:59

I do feel like I'm their mum, because obviously,

0:12:590:13:03

the mums, they've to go to work and yeah, I'm their nanny!

0:13:030:13:08

Before long, this newborn is already strong enough

0:13:120:13:15

to take her first steps in the world.

0:13:150:13:18

For both these farms,

0:13:260:13:27

the cycle of pregnancy and birth is at the very heart of what they do.

0:13:270:13:32

After all, it's new mothers that make milk.

0:13:320:13:35

But for these competitive farmers,

0:13:370:13:39

there's something else on their minds...

0:13:390:13:42

Show day!

0:13:420:13:44

Showing is a very, very important part of what I do.

0:13:440:13:50

You're getting an opportunity to exhibit your animals.

0:13:500:13:53

If we win the first prize, in the ring,

0:13:530:13:56

then we're able then to market the genetics from that one cow

0:13:560:14:00

and we can profit from it.

0:14:000:14:02

It's another form of income, instead of just the milk.

0:14:040:14:06

That's what we've got...

0:14:060:14:08

You've got to make the money from genetics as well,

0:14:080:14:11

because we've invested a lot in it.

0:14:110:14:13

With the show looming, there's a lot to get done,

0:14:150:14:18

especially if just two of you run the whole farm.

0:14:180:14:22

When showtime comes,

0:14:220:14:24

there's a huge amount of extra work to do on top of your normal routine.

0:14:240:14:28

Farm life comes first.

0:14:280:14:29

Yeah, the show is just our little thing...

0:14:290:14:33

Extra, we do that on top of the farm stuff.

0:14:330:14:37

There's a lot of competition in the industry at the shows.

0:14:380:14:41

You don't want to lose.

0:14:410:14:43

You go because you think you've got a good cow.

0:14:430:14:45

We take it so personally, because, you know,

0:14:470:14:51

-you work with them every single day, and you want to win.

-Yeah.

0:14:510:14:55

I have to clip 13 animals within a few days of the show,

0:14:570:15:04

so that's highly intense.

0:15:040:15:06

Especially as I could easily spend two hours on one cow

0:15:060:15:11

to get her ready, so to fit...

0:15:110:15:14

There's a lot of this involved.

0:15:140:15:16

-Come on, Holly!

-Yeah!

0:15:160:15:19

Over at Trevor's, he's also thinking about the show.

0:15:220:15:26

And it has a special and romantic significance for Trevor and May.

0:15:260:15:32

When I started showing dairy is when I met Trevor.

0:15:320:15:36

It was actually at the Edenbridge Show that we met, wasn't it?

0:15:360:15:40

Yes, we wasn't... It wasn't dating, we just met there,

0:15:400:15:45

and sort of got to know each other.

0:15:450:15:47

And then, a few months later,

0:15:470:15:49

May wanted a calf to show, so she came up,

0:15:490:15:53

picked a calf, and then... Yeah, the rest is history.

0:15:530:15:56

We got talking about cows, and I realised May would listen to me,

0:15:560:16:00

because nobody listens to me, really.

0:16:000:16:02

They're like, "Can you shut up about cows, please?

0:16:020:16:05

"There's more to life than cows.".

0:16:050:16:07

No, there isn't! And May agrees with that.

0:16:070:16:10

And the dairy theme even carried through to their wedding day.

0:16:100:16:15

It took a bit of persuading May

0:16:180:16:21

-for me to have a milk churn to sit on, but...

-No...

0:16:210:16:24

It did! A little bit.

0:16:240:16:25

Yeah.

0:16:280:16:29

Romance aside, Trevor's ambition for this year's show

0:16:310:16:35

is to come home with a different kind of trophy.

0:16:350:16:38

This time, for the farm's champion cow.

0:16:380:16:41

So, this is Lucy.

0:16:410:16:43

She's a show cow, and a seriously good herd cow as well.

0:16:430:16:46

I just love looking at them.

0:16:460:16:49

I just love it.

0:16:490:16:51

This is what I get, I get a buzz out of it,

0:16:510:16:53

like anybody who'd look at their lovely sports car,

0:16:530:16:56

or something like that.

0:16:560:16:57

That's why it's so nice to go to a show and compete.

0:16:570:17:00

When you get there you just feel,

0:17:000:17:02

whoa, you know, it really gives you that real buzz.

0:17:020:17:06

So, two farms who believe their cows are the best.

0:17:090:17:12

And to make it more interesting,

0:17:120:17:14

Ben and Holly will be going head-to-head against Trevor

0:17:140:17:18

at this year's show.

0:17:180:17:19

Well, Trevor is a very good friend of mine.

0:17:190:17:22

He got me into cows.

0:17:220:17:24

He's got such passion for it, and it rubbed off on me.

0:17:240:17:28

Now I just want to beat him!

0:17:280:17:30

Ben worked for me when he was younger.

0:17:320:17:34

And he's gone on to do the rest himself, really.

0:17:340:17:37

But he's got this great cow.

0:17:370:17:39

And she's been trying to take on Lucy at most of the shows.

0:17:390:17:43

And at the Kent, she pipped her to the post.

0:17:430:17:46

Boom!

0:17:460:17:48

You know, I was happy for Ben but I was absolutely gutted,

0:17:500:17:53

I had a lump in my throat, that Lucy had come second

0:17:530:17:55

because I was really excited that she might get first.

0:17:550:17:58

Well, we're one-all so far.

0:17:580:18:00

And so, yeah, it's the best out of three.

0:18:000:18:03

It's a rivalry that has played out for years.

0:18:030:18:06

But tomorrow's show will be the decider.

0:18:060:18:09

It'll be the final...

0:18:090:18:11

Yeah, the final one for this year.

0:18:110:18:13

Could literally go either way.

0:18:130:18:15

Yeah, we'll see how it goes.

0:18:150:18:17

After all their hard work, and months of preparation,

0:18:240:18:29

the day of the show has finally arrived.

0:18:290:18:32

The prestigious Edenbridge and Oxted Show in Surrey

0:18:370:18:41

is starting to come to life.

0:18:410:18:43

It's one of the highlights of the local farming calendar,

0:18:430:18:46

and an important show for the cattle-breeding community.

0:18:460:18:49

Up to 40,000 visitors are expected through the gates,

0:18:510:18:54

to experience the best of what the rural South East has to offer.

0:18:540:18:58

In the dairy section, preparations are in full swing.

0:19:050:19:08

The cows' beauty parlour is open for business.

0:19:080:19:12

It's like going to the hairdressers.

0:19:120:19:14

It's like the cow salon.

0:19:140:19:16

And then we do our hair later on with this, so...

0:19:160:19:19

Over at Ben and Holly's stall, true beauty takes time.

0:19:190:19:24

We started at 2.30am, washing, getting these ready.

0:19:240:19:29

Picking up all of the poo.

0:19:290:19:31

I love show mornings.

0:19:310:19:33

It's just a mad rush to get everything done.

0:19:330:19:36

There's a bit of dirt there.

0:19:360:19:38

When Holly squeegeed them off, she didn't clean the squeegee first.

0:19:380:19:41

Who was doing the squeegeeing?

0:19:410:19:43

You!

0:19:430:19:45

For the farmers, cow beauty works on an industrial scale.

0:19:450:19:50

With clipping, blow-drying, powder,

0:19:500:19:53

and even super-strength hairspray.

0:19:530:19:55

All right, then.

0:19:550:19:57

All this hard work is to hide any imperfections,

0:19:570:20:01

and give them the best chance of winning.

0:20:010:20:03

We are trying to reduce the flaws.

0:20:030:20:06

So we're trying to trick the judge.

0:20:060:20:09

-Cheating!

-Cheating!

0:20:090:20:11

No, the cheating is the 50 quid we gave him this morning!

0:20:110:20:14

We're not cheating, we're just... trying to make her look beautiful.

0:20:150:20:20

But jokes aside, the boys are keeping a close eye on each other,

0:20:250:20:30

with so much at stake.

0:20:300:20:32

We're going to battle it out today.

0:20:320:20:34

Bit nervous, really.

0:20:340:20:36

You always are, it's all about competition, isn't it?

0:20:360:20:39

It's not long to go before everything kicks off.

0:20:490:20:52

But Ben and Holly have spotted a problem with one of their cows.

0:20:520:20:57

She's been too comfortable and eaten too much,

0:20:570:21:00

and made more milk than we assumed she would have done.

0:21:000:21:04

The fullness of the cow's udders is a big factor in judging.

0:21:040:21:08

One of their girls is already at the perfect milk level.

0:21:080:21:12

She's looking spot-on now for the class,

0:21:120:21:15

where we would want it to be in two hours' time.

0:21:150:21:18

So, we're thinking, two hours' more milk,

0:21:180:21:21

is it then going to spoil her by having too much milk on her?

0:21:210:21:26

They need to decide whether to milk her, or wait.

0:21:280:21:32

The welfare of the animals comes first.

0:21:320:21:36

Can she wait?

0:21:360:21:39

When's the class? What's the time now?

0:21:390:21:41

-Quarter past seven.

-Quarter past seven.

0:21:410:21:44

Ben decides she's fine, and wants to get her ready for the showring.

0:21:490:21:54

We'll do it, and we can always just take a little bit off, can't we?

0:21:540:21:57

That's Holly's not impressed face!

0:21:580:22:01

Meanwhile, Trevor has a few problems of his own.

0:22:160:22:19

There's something wrong with his cow's food.

0:22:190:22:22

Ben, you haven't got any spare food, have you, which I could have?

0:22:220:22:24

-Mine's gone hot.

-You want some food, do you?

-Yes, please.

0:22:240:22:27

We'll help you out, no worries.

0:22:270:22:29

-Have you got some spare?

-Yes, yes. He needs some food.

0:22:290:22:31

-That's really good of you, mate.

-No worries, mate.

-Thanks very much.

0:22:310:22:34

The show is starting to fill up,

0:22:410:22:43

with crowds eager to see what's on offer.

0:22:430:22:46

'Attention. This is a ten-minute warning.

0:22:460:22:49

'We are going to be starting at 9am. Thank you.'

0:22:490:22:53

Time is ticking towards the first competition of the day.

0:22:530:22:58

Ben and Holly simply can't manage all the prep on their own,

0:22:580:23:01

so they've enlisted a team of helpers.

0:23:010:23:04

They're brilliant. We have done a show without them.

0:23:040:23:07

Just the two of us. We took a big team, and it was mayhem.

0:23:070:23:10

And Holly's mum is filling in as chief cow beautician.

0:23:120:23:16

What we're putting on is a coat of product that will make them shiny

0:23:160:23:21

and look sleek.

0:23:210:23:23

You can't see it so much on the white cows,

0:23:230:23:25

but it's much more evident on the black ones.

0:23:250:23:29

But it's not just the cows that are getting ready.

0:23:290:23:31

Nervous. Always get really nervous now.

0:23:310:23:34

It's like these last five minutes take for ever.

0:23:340:23:37

Mum, do you reckon you could run to the tent, please,

0:23:370:23:41

and get my tie, please?

0:23:410:23:43

Can you run now, because you'll probably have enough time.

0:23:430:23:46

The competition is moments away.

0:23:470:23:51

But Holly's not happy.

0:23:510:23:53

You know on that show-shine stuff?

0:23:530:23:55

Someone's accidentally done the jet setting,

0:23:550:23:58

and now it looks a bit silly.

0:23:580:24:00

Yeah?

0:24:000:24:02

I think that's probably Mum.

0:24:030:24:05

Today's dairy cow competition will be judged by farmer Ben Yates,

0:24:100:24:15

who has also brought along the family for a day out.

0:24:150:24:18

I've been judging about eight years now.

0:24:200:24:23

I've been showing cows about 15-20 years.

0:24:230:24:26

We're looking for cows that we can see can survive in our systems

0:24:260:24:30

at home, which have got plenty of strength.

0:24:300:24:32

They've then got to have great feet and legs

0:24:320:24:35

so they can walk round farms, into milking parlours.

0:24:350:24:38

And then we want a really good udder.

0:24:400:24:42

It shows they can produce milk.

0:24:420:24:44

Engaging the audience when we're judging is very important.

0:24:440:24:47

I want to be able to tell people what I'm looking for,

0:24:470:24:50

and explaining what the difference... Why this one's better than that one.

0:24:500:24:53

We try to make sure that everybody knows exactly what I feel

0:24:530:24:57

there... Is the difference...

0:24:570:24:59

And hopefully the exhibitors understand what I'm saying, too,

0:24:590:25:02

and feel that I've given them the right reasons, too.

0:25:020:25:05

Put our hands together, please.

0:25:050:25:08

But what makes a good cow can be a matter of very broad opinion.

0:25:090:25:14

Everybody's got their sort of cow they like,

0:25:140:25:17

whereas you have a judge who has a different opinion

0:25:170:25:20

-and you can really burn.

-Yeah.

0:25:200:25:23

Holly and Ben enter the ring for their first round.

0:25:250:25:28

You're blocking me.

0:25:280:25:30

First of all, I'd like to thank Edenbridge and Oxted Show

0:25:310:25:34

for inviting me to judge the show today.

0:25:340:25:36

Real privilege to come down here,

0:25:360:25:38

and great to start the day off with such a good class.

0:25:380:25:41

They're each leading a calf they believe can win.

0:25:410:25:43

Once classes begin, it's one after the other, after the other,

0:25:450:25:49

and it's a brilliant adrenaline rush.

0:25:490:25:52

You don't really have time to think about the last class

0:25:520:25:55

-because you are in on the next one.

-Yeah, you don't.

0:25:550:26:00

Ben and Holly have worked hard to breed these calves to show level.

0:26:000:26:04

A win would mean everything.

0:26:040:26:05

Time to make a decision.

0:26:080:26:10

And Ben's calf takes first prize.

0:26:150:26:17

An incredible start.

0:26:170:26:19

Thank you. Ta.

0:26:220:26:24

And it's not just the crowd who are impressed.

0:26:300:26:33

Without further ado, we're going to lead off with this calf.

0:26:330:26:35

This calf, I fell in love with when it first came in the ring.

0:26:350:26:37

A real sharp calf, a calf with a real big future,

0:26:370:26:40

a real cow-making heifer, I hope.

0:26:400:26:42

It's a great first result for them both.

0:26:420:26:45

Good start. Good start, yeah.

0:26:450:26:47

-See how the rest of them do.

-Good.

0:26:470:26:49

That's good. Great start to the day.

0:26:490:26:52

The show is in full swing, and the public are flooding in.

0:27:010:27:04

Over in the cattle section, they're ready for the next competition.

0:27:070:27:11

After a morning of sprucing up the cows,

0:27:170:27:19

time for Trevor to turn the spotlight on himself.

0:27:190:27:23

Well, you've got to look smart against a smart cow, try to, anyway.

0:27:230:27:26

I'm not very good at doing ties, though, but there you go.

0:27:280:27:31

That's not bad for me, to be honest.

0:27:310:27:33

It says Holstein Young Breeder there.

0:27:330:27:36

I like that.

0:27:360:27:38

That means I'm still a young breeder, if I wear this tie.

0:27:380:27:41

With an early win under their belts...

0:27:430:27:46

That's fine, that fits.

0:27:460:27:48

..Holly and Ben are feeling hopeful.

0:27:480:27:50

See how it goes.

0:27:530:27:54

But things could change, now that he and Trevor are going head-to-head.

0:27:540:27:59

Yeah, we're getting close now.

0:27:590:28:00

Nerves are there. I've already run to the toilet once, so,

0:28:000:28:03

that bit's out the way.

0:28:030:28:05

Both are bringing out their big guns.

0:28:050:28:08

It will be Ben's prized Alison up against Trevor's champion, Lucy.

0:28:080:28:12

She is doing all right, Lucy. We'll just see how she goes.

0:28:120:28:15

Would've liked a little bit more milk on her

0:28:150:28:18

and I would've liked her to just relax a little bit.

0:28:180:28:21

All my cows seem to be really fired-up today.

0:28:210:28:23

I don't know if Ben's sabotaged me with the food he gave me.

0:28:230:28:27

It might have something in it and made them a bit hypo.

0:28:270:28:30

As they wait to be called in,

0:28:320:28:34

Trevor can't help doing a little last-minute comparison

0:28:340:28:37

with Ben's cow.

0:28:370:28:38

Trevor and Ben enter the ring.

0:28:470:28:49

There's no competition like the competition between two dairy men.

0:28:510:28:56

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we come to our first in milk class,

0:28:560:28:59

and what a credit this class is.

0:28:590:29:01

We may not be in the big dairy country down here,

0:29:010:29:03

but what quality we've got in this class, it's quite tremendous.

0:29:030:29:06

COW BELLOWS

0:29:080:29:09

There are four others in the ring,

0:29:110:29:13

but they're only interested in each other.

0:29:130:29:17

Morning, mate.

0:29:170:29:18

It's a friendly rivalry, but Ben wants to show his former boss

0:29:180:29:22

he's his own man.

0:29:220:29:23

And Trevor wants to prove he's still got it.

0:29:270:29:30

Steady, steady, steady.

0:29:340:29:35

It's getting tense as the judge scrutinises each cow.

0:29:350:29:40

Now, he must decide.

0:29:420:29:44

Steady, steady, steady.

0:29:440:29:45

Steady.

0:29:450:29:47

And Trevor takes first prize.

0:29:540:29:56

The judge pulled me up at the front, number one.

0:29:590:30:01

That was it, I was ecstatic.

0:30:010:30:04

-Well done.

-Thanks, mate.

0:30:040:30:05

Well done.

0:30:070:30:09

She's the sort of cow that's either at the top or at the bottom,

0:30:090:30:12

and unfortunately today, she's at the bottom,

0:30:120:30:15

but that's the way showing goes.

0:30:150:30:17

You know, Ben...

0:30:170:30:19

I didn't like looking at his sad face,

0:30:190:30:22

but then I had a really smiley face so, you know...

0:30:220:30:25

It made me buzz!

0:30:250:30:26

Ben's cow, just when you get in amongst them,

0:30:280:30:31

she wasn't quite clean enough for me.

0:30:310:30:33

I mean, I'm happy - Trevor's cow was a good cow.

0:30:340:30:37

Just don't like losing to him.

0:30:370:30:39

It's midway through the day, and time for a spot of lunch.

0:30:460:30:51

For everyone.

0:30:520:30:54

After the stresses of the morning's competitions,

0:30:540:30:57

Trevor gets to celebrate his lead

0:30:570:30:59

by taking some time out with his family.

0:30:590:31:01

Edenbridge has been running since 1837, making this the 179th show.

0:31:020:31:09

For generations of farmers, it has been a well-earned day out.

0:31:090:31:14

But for the many urban visitors that come every year,

0:31:140:31:17

this Home Counties show is an important link

0:31:170:31:20

with the countryside and rural life.

0:31:200:31:22

It's a really lovely show.

0:31:240:31:25

We've got our cows and sheep all set round us in an enclosed space,

0:31:250:31:28

so a really good place for the public to come

0:31:280:31:31

and see what's going on at the show

0:31:310:31:32

and all the different animals that are on farms.

0:31:320:31:35

Shows like this are very important.

0:31:380:31:40

We've got to educate everybody to what our industry is about,

0:31:400:31:44

where milk comes from, that it is a 24/7 job.

0:31:440:31:48

It is important. Milk is one of the key ingredients to life, really.

0:31:480:31:52

Especially popular is the livestock section,

0:31:530:31:56

which is the real heart of the show.

0:31:560:31:59

It's the largest collection of cattle seen together

0:31:590:32:02

anywhere in southern England.

0:32:020:32:03

It's one of the many reasons why it's so important

0:32:060:32:09

to the farming community.

0:32:090:32:10

BLOWS HORN

0:32:120:32:14

The family lunch break is over,

0:32:180:32:21

and time for the competition between the two friends to kick off again.

0:32:210:32:25

Just a few last minutes for those all-important touch-ups.

0:32:260:32:31

It's like your foundation.

0:32:310:32:33

You know, we're putting the foundation on the legs this time.

0:32:330:32:36

Trevor may have won the first competition,

0:32:360:32:39

but Ben isn't beaten yet.

0:32:390:32:41

He wants to make sure he has his best cows for the next round

0:32:410:32:45

and asks Holly for advice.

0:32:450:32:47

What do you think?

0:32:470:32:49

These two?

0:32:490:32:51

Um... Let's have a look.

0:32:510:32:54

Yeah, definitely those two.

0:32:570:32:58

Because they're taking out two cows in this competition,

0:33:010:33:04

Trevor's roping in his niece to help.

0:33:040:33:08

Maxine's the best handler here.

0:33:080:33:10

She knows how to hold on to one if it goes a bit wild.

0:33:100:33:12

She's stronger than me.

0:33:120:33:14

She could pick me up in the air like that,

0:33:140:33:16

so I gave her the one who's a bit tough.

0:33:160:33:18

Trevor's wife May and baby Hope, are here to cheer them on.

0:33:200:33:24

And the farmers are back in the ring.

0:33:260:33:28

Whoever's cows are the most identical, will win this one.

0:33:330:33:37

Me and Ben, we're basically focusing on each other in that class.

0:33:430:33:47

Everybody else isn't there, to be honest with you.

0:33:470:33:50

-All right, Ben?

-All right?

0:33:500:33:52

'This is one of the best line-ups we've seen in a very long time.'

0:33:520:33:57

There are a lot of buyers and dealers at the show today

0:34:010:34:04

who are looking out for the competition winners.

0:34:040:34:07

Rosettes are invaluable to their business.

0:34:070:34:11

Showing is very important for the promotion of our cattle.

0:34:110:34:14

Bringing them to the show is our shop window

0:34:140:34:16

for all the other breeders to see the cows,

0:34:160:34:20

and then winning makes it all the better for us.

0:34:200:34:23

But for Ben and Trevor, it's more personal than business.

0:34:230:34:26

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we've come to the pairs' class.

0:34:330:34:36

When I'm judging the pairs' class, I like a pair to be a pair.

0:34:360:34:39

And I'm going to go with this pair right here as my winning pair.

0:34:420:34:45

Trevor's done it again.

0:34:470:34:49

Super pair of cows. A real credit to the breeder.

0:34:490:34:52

That unbelievable feeling inside.

0:34:540:34:56

The butterflies now have gone into something else.

0:34:560:34:58

They've gone into, like, a swarm of bees and butterflies and everything.

0:34:580:35:01

I just feel crazy inside.

0:35:010:35:03

Then we're going to go to this pair here.

0:35:030:35:05

A super, super pair.

0:35:050:35:07

And Ben and Holly come in second place.

0:35:070:35:09

-Well done.

-Thank you.

0:35:100:35:13

Who wants the beer tokens?

0:35:130:35:14

I felt we had, I thought a good pair, but they were second today.

0:35:160:35:20

Felt a little bit hard done by. Just in my opinion.

0:35:200:35:24

HE CHEERS, SHE LAUGHS

0:35:240:35:26

That's what we want to see. Red. Red is the best. Well happy.

0:35:270:35:31

Trevor's cows... Yes, we don't judge faces,

0:35:310:35:34

we judge the cows,

0:35:340:35:35

and he's just been the guy that's got the right sort of cows today.

0:35:350:35:38

Yeah, very impressed with them.

0:35:380:35:40

-Mate, I'm so happy.

-Doing all right.

0:35:400:35:44

Really happy with that.

0:35:440:35:46

The day is beginning to come to an end.

0:35:510:35:54

But the crowds are still flowing.

0:35:540:35:56

In the cow tent, all thoughts are on the last competition.

0:36:000:36:04

It's 2-0 to Trevor.

0:36:040:36:06

But there's still everything to play for.

0:36:060:36:09

Ben and Holly are double-checking everything.

0:36:090:36:12

-Can you just check Norma?

-Huh?

-They let Norma lay down.

0:36:120:36:15

-Can you go and have a look at her?

-Yeah.

0:36:150:36:17

I'll get the numbers.

0:36:170:36:19

Over at Trevor's stall, he has a few last-minute tricks up his sleeve.

0:36:190:36:25

Ollie's putting the baby oil on now.

0:36:250:36:27

He's just rubbing it over the udder, so it shines a little bit.

0:36:270:36:29

We always have one person to do that

0:36:290:36:32

because if you get baby oil on your hands,

0:36:320:36:34

it's like a slippery fish, the halter is.

0:36:340:36:37

You can't hold on to it,

0:36:370:36:38

and the cow just runs away with you and the halter goes over there

0:36:380:36:42

and you're like, "Bye-bye, cow!". Gone!

0:36:420:36:45

Meanwhile, for Ben and Holly,

0:36:450:36:47

this is their last chance to get everything right.

0:36:470:36:50

This one is all about which farmer is the best breeder.

0:36:530:36:57

Don't worry about that one.

0:36:570:36:59

You sure?

0:36:590:37:01

This is the championship now. This is the finale.

0:37:010:37:03

The very best cows have been entered,

0:37:080:37:11

and winning here will carry a lot of prestige.

0:37:110:37:13

And it's drawing massive attention.

0:37:160:37:18

There's even more pressure for Trevor

0:37:190:37:21

because Sonny, his eldest son,

0:37:210:37:23

is also in the ring with his own prized cow.

0:37:230:37:26

These old friends have been battling it out at shows

0:37:290:37:32

throughout the summer.

0:37:320:37:33

The judge has changed for this competition,

0:37:390:37:42

so will he see Trevor and Ben's prized cows differently?

0:37:420:37:45

All the long hours, the hard work and dedication,

0:37:540:37:57

have come down to this moment.

0:37:570:37:59

Lucy, don't run away.

0:37:590:38:01

It could help Ben and Holly towards their dream

0:38:020:38:05

of owning their own farm.

0:38:050:38:06

And for Trevor, it could help him boost the size of his beloved herd.

0:38:080:38:12

The judge lines them up for a final assessment.

0:38:150:38:18

There's a lot riding on this.

0:38:260:38:28

All Ben and Trevor can do is wait and hope.

0:38:280:38:31

And Ben has won at last, with Trevor in second place.

0:38:440:38:48

It's good to have a bit of competition with Trevor again today

0:38:510:38:55

and it just shows how close those two cows are, really.

0:38:550:38:58

Good girl.

0:38:580:39:00

Could have gone either way, it was like splitting hairs.

0:39:010:39:04

He won that, so good on him.

0:39:040:39:06

We've got to give him something, haven't we?

0:39:060:39:08

This prize has really given Ben and Holly a boost.

0:39:080:39:12

It means that this young couple are on the road to success

0:39:120:39:16

and a bright future in farming.

0:39:160:39:18

Yeah, all good.

0:39:180:39:20

Being in the championship is really encouraging for the future,

0:39:200:39:24

to come back and try and do it again, and do better.

0:39:240:39:27

It just means that we are doing things right when we're at home

0:39:270:39:31

for the other 300-odd days.

0:39:310:39:34

The Edenbridge and Oxted Festival has turned 100 acres of empty fields

0:39:430:39:48

into a showground that's celebrated the best of the British countryside.

0:39:480:39:52

It's been a long competition.

0:39:530:39:55

Soon it will be over for another year.

0:39:570:39:59

All the winning farmers take one last opportunity

0:40:010:40:04

to parade their champions.

0:40:040:40:06

Is it just the only one in the class, was it?

0:40:080:40:12

'Welcome to the Edenbridge and Oxted show cattle parade.

0:40:120:40:16

'I do believe we're going to show you a few sheep later on.'

0:40:160:40:19

Holly leads with their prize-winning calf.

0:40:210:40:25

And Trevor follows behind with champion, Lucy.

0:40:250:40:27

'Cast your eyes on the cattle as they come through the gate now.

0:40:320:40:36

'We go to our dairy section and our supreme dairy female.'

0:40:360:40:41

Ben is awarded one last grand prize for breeding.

0:40:410:40:46

-Cheers.

-Congratulations.

0:40:460:40:47

Thanks so much.

0:40:470:40:48

All done for another year, and, yeah, we've done all right, so, happy days.

0:40:520:40:57

Slowly, all the farmers make their way out.

0:40:570:41:00

The day has been a triumph for everyone involved.

0:41:000:41:03

It's a drug and I'm addicted to it. It's great fun,

0:41:030:41:06

and I've got friends all over the world from doing this job.

0:41:060:41:09

Judging the shows, it's nice to meet people as well,

0:41:090:41:12

and the respect that you get back from people is really, really good.

0:41:120:41:16

As the site winds down, the families finally get a chance to reflect.

0:41:220:41:27

I think we've had a really good show this year.

0:41:270:41:29

Good fun, good rivalry...

0:41:290:41:31

-..and all worked out fair in the end, I guess.

-Yeah.

0:41:320:41:36

I've had a good day, actually.

0:41:380:41:40

We've had top-of-the-class wins, really.

0:41:400:41:42

Really, really happy.

0:41:420:41:44

Brilliant, absolutely over the moon at how we did today.

0:41:460:41:51

The winning is really good promotion for our herd,

0:41:510:41:56

and it's a good building block for the future family, hopefully.

0:41:560:42:01

COO MOOS

0:42:010:42:04

It is a big family outing, really.

0:42:040:42:07

It's a bit like a holiday.

0:42:070:42:09

We don't get away from the farm much,

0:42:090:42:13

so this is our fun break, really.

0:42:130:42:16

Yeah, that's true.

0:42:160:42:18

And the boys are already planning next year's showdown.

0:42:210:42:25

Next year, I think we'll get them lined up and see what happens then.

0:42:250:42:28

-You know.

-That's it.

0:42:280:42:30

I've got another one in the jewel box at home.

0:42:300:42:33

-I haven't taken her out yet.

-I've got two I left.

0:42:330:42:36

-Yeah?

-They probably could have won today.

-Really?

-Yeah.
