Across the country,

0:00:020:00:03

thousands of farming families work tirelessly around the clock.

0:00:030:00:07

Bring them up, Isabel, well done.

0:00:080:00:10

Here they come.

0:00:110:00:12

Shake it, baby, shake it.

0:00:120:00:14

But there's one day each year...

0:00:140:00:16

Come on, girl, up you go.

0:00:160:00:17

..where they get to leave the daily routine behind.

0:00:170:00:20

Yoo-hoo!

0:00:200:00:22

These are show days...

0:00:220:00:24

Welcome to the Pembrokeshire County Show.

0:00:240:00:26

..when they come together as a community...

0:00:260:00:29

Salute!

0:00:290:00:31

..to showcase the fruits of their labour...

0:00:310:00:33

Had a quick look at the competition, I'm in with a chance.

0:00:330:00:36

..and try to win prizes for their breed champions...

0:00:360:00:40

Well done. Wahey!

0:00:400:00:42

It's show business, folks.

0:00:420:00:44

..and award-winning produce.

0:00:440:00:45

I got first!

0:00:450:00:48

You've had the last two jars.

0:00:480:00:50

There will be highs...

0:00:500:00:51

..and lows...

0:00:540:00:55

No, no, no, no, no!

0:00:550:00:57

..for the dedicated farmers who give everything to walk away a champion.

0:00:570:01:02

No way!

0:01:030:01:04

We consume almost 70,000 tonnes of lamb and mutton every year.

0:01:170:01:22

Come on, boy.

0:01:250:01:26

Up and down the country,

0:01:260:01:28

thousands of sheep farmers are attempting

0:01:280:01:30

to satisfy this huge demand.

0:01:300:01:32

Come on, boys, come on, boys, come on, boys.

0:01:320:01:36

Today we are meeting two of those families,

0:01:360:01:39

Neil and Rhian Dillon...

0:01:390:01:41

..and Mandy and Derek Coleburn,

0:01:430:01:45

as they prepare to show off their best sheep

0:01:450:01:48

at this year's Pembrokeshire County Show.

0:01:480:01:52

No, no, no, no, no!

0:01:520:01:55

Looking on, looking A-star, looking his best.

0:01:550:01:59

Both are hoping to win coveted rosettes,

0:01:590:02:03

a sign of quality award-winning stock.

0:02:030:02:05

The rolling Welsh hills of the Brecon Beacons

0:02:120:02:14

are home to our first family.

0:02:140:02:16

No, no, this way.

0:02:160:02:18

Yeah, we'll feed them now.

0:02:210:02:23

Neil and Rhian live here with their two young sons Iestyn and Owain.

0:02:230:02:28

Careful, OK?

0:02:280:02:29

Oh! Ooh!

0:02:310:02:32

-That was a good one.

-Owain, he's mad keen, isn't he?

0:02:340:02:37

He's only three, but he is showing a huge interest now.

0:02:370:02:41

He loves feeding and he loves going to the shows.

0:02:410:02:43

And, you know, he'll lead the sheep.

0:02:430:02:45

Like Iestyn, he's got no problem at all.

0:02:450:02:48

Come on...

0:02:500:02:52

How much do you love the farm?

0:02:540:02:57

Do you like the shed?

0:02:570:02:59

Do you like...? Do you like it?

0:02:590:03:03

Yeah.

0:03:030:03:04

-He likes it.

-Dad!

0:03:040:03:05

Dad!

0:03:050:03:07

-Those sheep...

-OK, they're OK.

0:03:070:03:11

Over seven years, Neil and Rhian have built up a flock of 80,

0:03:140:03:18

including the iconic Badger Faced Welsh Mountains.

0:03:180:03:22

The sheep are grazed on two rented sites ten miles apart.

0:03:250:03:29

-Come on, girls.

-Both from farming families, but without a farm...

0:03:300:03:34

-Steady.

-..Neil and Rhian have a plan.

0:03:340:03:37

Come on, then, girls.

0:03:370:03:39

Our big dream is definitely to have our own place, isn't it?

0:03:390:03:42

A family farm where we could contain it all.

0:03:420:03:45

We don't have all this running around.

0:03:450:03:47

-No.

-It works, but it would be easier to have it all together.

0:03:470:03:51

But the dream is to have a farm,

0:03:510:03:53

something that the boys can have one day.

0:03:530:03:56

It was ten years ago,

0:03:560:03:57

at their Young Farmers Club, that Rhian first caught Neil's eye.

0:03:570:04:01

It was love at first sight.

0:04:010:04:04

We went to a competition one night.

0:04:040:04:05

It was a YFC competition, drama competition,

0:04:050:04:08

in the theatre in Brecon.

0:04:080:04:09

And I was there with a few guys.

0:04:090:04:11

They said Sennybridge were coming on,

0:04:110:04:14

and then this young lady came on the stage.

0:04:140:04:16

-With, with...

-Dressed as a farmer's wife.

0:04:160:04:18

Yeah, stockings all rolled down, pinafore on,

0:04:180:04:22

it wasn't that type of show!

0:04:220:04:23

SHE LAUGHS

0:04:230:04:25

And I took your fancy.

0:04:250:04:27

You did, and I said to Will, I said,

0:04:270:04:29

"That's the girl I'm going to marry."

0:04:290:04:31

It took me a bit longer to pluck up the courage to ask her out,

0:04:340:04:36

-but I did, and there we are.

-What a catch.

0:04:360:04:39

-What a catch.

-What a catch.

0:04:390:04:41

THEY LAUGH

0:04:410:04:43

As they save up towards the farm dream,

0:04:480:04:50

Neil and Rhian work full time to keep the family going.

0:04:500:04:54

Neil runs a catering company,

0:04:560:04:58

and Rhian teaches agriculture at the local secondary school.

0:04:580:05:02

Even at home, Neil can't take his apron off.

0:05:040:05:08

Always cooking, that's me, yeah.

0:05:080:05:09

Traditional Sunday roast today.

0:05:100:05:13

Being a farmer and a caterer is hard work, with long hours.

0:05:140:05:19

I do a lot of functions.

0:05:190:05:21

And, yeah, it's hard, it's one of our main incomes, really.

0:05:210:05:26

With the teaching and the farming,

0:05:260:05:28

is that we can do that as well, and we have a bit of fun with that.

0:05:280:05:31

But the catering, you know,

0:05:310:05:32

that's where the money's coming from, really, so...

0:05:320:05:35

Here we are, boys.

0:05:350:05:36

OK, right, boys? Wait a minute.

0:05:360:05:40

Wait, now Daddy will bring the veg through now.

0:05:400:05:42

Let me cut it, OK?

0:05:420:05:43

The farm's roast lamb is a firm favourite all-round.

0:05:430:05:47

Ready, vegetables.

0:05:470:05:48

If you breed it, you should be able to cook it, as well.

0:05:500:05:52

You going to have some carrots?

0:05:520:05:54

Yes, please.

0:05:540:05:56

And I think it's vitally important to make children aware

0:05:560:06:00

of where their food comes from.

0:06:000:06:02

-Enjoying?

-Yeah.

-Good boys.

0:06:020:06:05

-It's nice lamb, isn't it?

-Is it nice?

-Yeah.

0:06:050:06:07

70 miles east in Blaenwaun,

0:06:120:06:15

retired couple Mandy and Derek run a 13-acre smallholding.

0:06:150:06:19

As well as some wet sheep, they also rear pigs, goats, chickens,

0:06:230:06:29

and have a bountiful polytunnel full of fruit and veg.

0:06:290:06:33

Every day, I come out, mix the pig food first, then the sheep food,

0:06:330:06:37

then the goat food...

0:06:370:06:39

..oh, and let the ducks out, actually, which I haven't done yet.

0:06:400:06:43

The couple share a love of caring for animals and the countryside.

0:06:450:06:49

Come on, piggies, come on, pigs!

0:06:490:06:53

It was this joint passion for all things rural

0:06:530:06:56

that made them click.

0:06:560:06:58

We met up on the South Downs in a pub car park, I think.

0:06:580:07:01

I was putting the dog in the car.

0:07:010:07:03

He was parked alongside.

0:07:030:07:05

And we started chatting and Derek was going in the pub and he said,

0:07:050:07:08

you know, "Are you coming in?"

0:07:080:07:10

"Yeah, all right, then." I thought, "Oh, quite nice, really."

0:07:100:07:13

So in we went, we sat there,

0:07:130:07:15

we talked and talked and talked, and had lunch, and talked some more,

0:07:150:07:19

came out and then arranged to meet again, I think, the following day.

0:07:190:07:24

I think we just got on so well.

0:07:240:07:25

For some reason, you are able to talk to somebody

0:07:250:07:29

without thinking or pretending or anything.

0:07:290:07:34

I suppose, yeah, we were both outdoors.

0:07:340:07:36

We had that feeling about us anyway.

0:07:360:07:39

So, yeah, that was my first attraction.

0:07:390:07:43

Come on, girl.

0:07:440:07:46

Once they married, Derek,

0:07:460:07:48

a former telecommunications engineer, and Mandy,

0:07:480:07:51

a retired practice manager, began to plot their escape to the country.

0:07:510:07:55

We started looking.

0:07:570:07:58

We found this place. First place we looked at here in Wales.

0:07:580:08:02

The second we set foot in the door, fell in love with it, and thought,

0:08:020:08:06

"This is it, this is where we belong."

0:08:060:08:07

And there's breakfast.

0:08:160:08:17

Two lovely duck eggs.

0:08:190:08:20

Nine years on, what was meant to be a retirement dream

0:08:200:08:23

has turned into something more.

0:08:230:08:25

Hello, boy.

0:08:250:08:27

Hungry, aren't you?

0:08:270:08:29

With backbreaking sweat and toil,

0:08:290:08:32

they've managed to build an almost self-sufficient farm.

0:08:320:08:35

It kind of exploded a bit.

0:08:350:08:38

And it's become quite a lot bigger than just those few pigs

0:08:390:08:42

and a few chickens into what we have today.

0:08:420:08:45

Even in this weather, the farm, the fields and everything

0:08:480:08:52

is all so satisfying.

0:08:520:08:53

It's just a way of life we've worked towards for years.

0:08:530:08:58

And finally,

0:08:580:09:00

you know, it's a cliche, I know, but it is that dream.

0:09:000:09:03

You know, it means so much to us.

0:09:030:09:05

They pride themselves at being able to survive almost 100%

0:09:060:09:10

off their land.

0:09:100:09:12

What with the duck eggs, the pork,

0:09:120:09:14

lamb, everything grown in the polytunnel,

0:09:140:09:18

we know how everything lived,

0:09:180:09:20

we know everything has a happy life,

0:09:200:09:21

we know the provenance of everything.

0:09:210:09:24

It's just fantastic.

0:09:240:09:25

You can't get better than that.

0:09:250:09:27

This is an intensely physical job.

0:09:290:09:32

Now in their sixties, Mandy and Derek mainly work the farm alone.

0:09:320:09:36

There are rewards for all the slog.

0:09:390:09:42

What's better than a fry up?

0:09:420:09:44

Home-made bread, duck eggs.

0:09:440:09:48

And bacon from their own stock.

0:09:480:09:51

So, pretty much all you've got on your breakfast

0:09:510:09:54

is from the farm as much as possible.

0:09:540:09:56

Cheers.

0:09:560:09:57

-My dears.

-My dears.

0:09:570:09:59

As well as all the farm work,

0:10:050:10:07

Mandy has also learnt to spin wool from the sheep fleeces.

0:10:070:10:11

I love to spin it, weave it, dye it,

0:10:130:10:17

felt with it, needle-felt, wet felt,

0:10:170:10:21

it's just so versatile, and it's a wonderful product to just handle.

0:10:210:10:26

Some of this wool is sold,

0:10:260:10:28

which goes part-way to make their dream pay.

0:10:280:10:31

People have sent me little samples of things

0:10:310:10:34

they've knitted up from the yarn, which is lovely.

0:10:340:10:37

In spite of the sheer hard work,

0:10:450:10:48

Mandy and Derek are living their dream.

0:10:480:10:50

All right, guys.

0:10:510:10:54

You have to love...

0:10:540:10:55

..handling animals, no matter what their challenges.

0:10:570:11:01

This one is a bit of a nutter at times.

0:11:010:11:04

She's a great one for kicking over the bucket,

0:11:040:11:06

which is why I'm hanging on to it.

0:11:060:11:08

But she's lovely. She's a lovely thing to do.

0:11:100:11:12

And all weathers, you've got to come out here and do all these things.

0:11:120:11:16

So, no matter what job in farming...

0:11:160:11:18

..it is a labour, the whole thing is a labour of love.

0:11:210:11:23

How are you guys?

0:11:290:11:30

Hello, little piggies, are you OK in there?

0:11:300:11:32

Keeping nice and dry?

0:11:320:11:33

It's no wonder these fields are so lush with all the rain they see.

0:11:350:11:39

Back in the Brecon Beacons, the weather is a little brighter.

0:11:460:11:50

Come on, boys. Get on.

0:11:520:11:54

Oh!

0:11:540:11:56

Oh! Get on, boys.

0:11:560:11:57

Watch him. Send him on.

0:11:570:11:59

Come on, boys. We're in the gate, yes.

0:11:590:12:01

-Good boy.

-Good boy.

0:12:030:12:04

Come on, drive them on.

0:12:060:12:08

Competition time is fast approaching,

0:12:080:12:10

and Neil and Rhian are busy checking their team.

0:12:100:12:13

Preparation is the name of the game, isn't it?

0:12:150:12:17

If we hadn't put the months of work into them,

0:12:170:12:20

they wouldn't be anything to show off.

0:12:200:12:22

So you know the caking, the feeding, the preparation, the washing,

0:12:220:12:27

the trimming, it's all part and parcel of showing, isn't it?

0:12:270:12:31

Definitely.

0:12:310:12:32

Let's get him washed.

0:12:320:12:34

Yeah. Good boy.

0:12:340:12:36

I'm just going to wash his bum now, just because he's got dirty.

0:12:370:12:40

-Hello.

-Hello.

0:12:400:12:42

And his mouth.

0:12:440:12:45

And his earrings.

0:12:450:12:47

Oh! He's eating your straw.

0:12:480:12:51

Is he pretty clean now?

0:12:510:12:53

Just doing his back end now.

0:12:530:12:55

-Just to make sure.

-That shampoo smells beautiful.

0:12:550:12:57

-Coconut.

-Coconut?

0:12:570:12:59

We have it all in this beauty parlour.

0:12:590:13:02

I think it'd be good in my beauty parlour, too.

0:13:020:13:05

You've got to have those sheep looking pristine.

0:13:050:13:08

They've got to be clean, good condition, looking smart.

0:13:080:13:13

For the judge, when that sheep enters the ring,

0:13:130:13:15

something may catch their eye straightaway.

0:13:150:13:17

When they're walking round they're thinking,

0:13:170:13:19

"Wow, look at that sheep, that's got something."

0:13:190:13:22

You want them to look their best at the end of the day, don't you?

0:13:220:13:26

They will have been trimmed nicely and...

0:13:260:13:29

let's have a bit of a wash on his face.

0:13:290:13:32

You know? And when we're showing,

0:13:370:13:39

you don't want any straw in his wool.

0:13:390:13:41

You want him to look pristine.

0:13:410:13:44

Spray tan for the ladies, spray tan for the sheep. There we are.

0:13:440:13:48

Neil loves it.

0:13:480:13:49

It's all he thinks about.

0:13:490:13:50

Maybe I think about the shopping side of the show, but, you know,

0:13:500:13:55

it all goes hand-in-hand.

0:13:550:13:57

Neil's a veteran of the Welsh showing circuit.

0:14:030:14:05

I've been showing since I was ten.

0:14:060:14:08

30 odd years now, really.

0:14:080:14:10

And he's passed his passion on.

0:14:100:14:13

Five-year-old Iestyn is already a prize-winner

0:14:130:14:15

and will be showing again this year,

0:14:150:14:18

which means he also needs to look the part.

0:14:180:14:21

-Are you ready for the show, Iestyn?

-Yes.

0:14:210:14:23

Come on, then, let's try your white coat on, OK?

0:14:230:14:26

And the other one. Right, let's have a look how smart you are.

0:14:260:14:29

Wait a minute, let me pull you right, OK?

0:14:290:14:31

And we'll do your poppers up.

0:14:310:14:33

So, what are you going to say?

0:14:330:14:35

What are you going to say about Tekkers?

0:14:350:14:37

No, I know...

0:14:370:14:39

Right, OK.

0:14:390:14:40

Iestyn is not the only one with an attack of the nerves.

0:14:530:14:56

Back in rainy Glynelwyn, show prep is also underway.

0:14:580:15:03

Former practice manager Mandy is getting ready.

0:15:030:15:06

She is still relatively new to this.

0:15:060:15:09

You've got the heavy end.

0:15:090:15:10

At the shows I'd see people snipping and trimming

0:15:100:15:13

and clipping and thinking, oh, my goodness,

0:15:130:15:16

you know, I haven't got a clue how to do that.

0:15:160:15:18

With an ambition to grow their rare breed flock,

0:15:180:15:21

Mandy wants to do well at the show.

0:15:210:15:23

I still have a lot to learn.

0:15:230:15:27

But it's getting better each year.

0:15:270:15:29

I get a little bit better at it.

0:15:290:15:30

Hello, mate.

0:15:300:15:32

-Hello, boy.

-Come on, come on.

-Good boy.

0:15:320:15:35

Time to put her new skills into practice if they want to come back

0:15:350:15:39

from the Pembrokeshire show loaded with ribbons.

0:15:390:15:42

There's a good boy, getting used to this now.

0:15:420:15:45

That'll do. There we go.

0:15:450:15:48

They are starting with their big hope, Kai the Dorset Down.

0:15:480:15:53

It's all about getting his fleece in tiptop condition.

0:15:530:15:56

Are you going to be a champion, Kai?

0:15:560:16:01

If not this year, maybe next year.

0:16:010:16:03

Good boy.

0:16:050:16:06

Take that off. Good boy.

0:16:090:16:11

Now they need to deal with the rest of the team.

0:16:110:16:14

Good boy, come on.

0:16:140:16:15

I think Topper here, you need your bum washed again.

0:16:150:16:17

We've got to wash that one, no question.

0:16:170:16:20

Edwin is always well-behaved,

0:16:200:16:22

so I think we'll probably be happy with him.

0:16:220:16:24

He'll be easy to handle.

0:16:240:16:26

-Yeah, he's good.

-In and out.

0:16:260:16:27

So, I think our hopes are pinned on the two lambs.

0:16:270:16:30

I think they look lovely.

0:16:300:16:32

Yeah, they all look lovely.

0:16:320:16:33

Yes, yes.

0:16:330:16:34

After months of preparation,

0:16:440:16:46

it's finally time for both families to head off.

0:16:460:16:50

Turn right, come on, back you come, come on.

0:16:500:16:53

Neil and Rhian have got loading down to a fine art.

0:17:020:17:06

Get on, on you go, come on, boys.

0:17:070:17:10

Off you go, off to the show. Off to the show.

0:17:100:17:13

This will be Neil's return to the Pembrokeshire County Show after ten years.

0:17:130:17:19

To return to Pembrokeshire is great, isn't it?

0:17:190:17:21

Oh, definitely. We haven't been there for such a long time.

0:17:210:17:23

We're showing off our stock,

0:17:230:17:25

which will be sold in the autumn for people to see,

0:17:250:17:27

and there'll be people who probably ran these local shows,

0:17:270:17:29

wouldn't see them, will see them.

0:17:290:17:32

Off to the show!

0:17:320:17:34

Yeah!

0:17:340:17:36

It's also a chance to make use of the two days away.

0:17:390:17:43

It'll be a honeymoon at last.

0:17:430:17:45

-Mini moon.

-Mini moon.

0:17:450:17:46

Two nights, two nights.

0:17:460:17:48

Or two nights, there you are.

0:17:480:17:50

-Better than nothing.

-Exactly.

-Better than nothing.

0:17:500:17:52

-Come on, then.

-Go on, then. Go on.

0:17:520:17:56

Here we go.

0:17:560:17:58

Good girls.

0:17:580:17:59

Come on, then.

0:18:000:18:02

Steady.

0:18:020:18:03

Pick it up that way, yeah, have we got it?

0:18:030:18:06

Have we got it? Go!

0:18:060:18:07

That's it. I'll help you.

0:18:070:18:10

-And we're off.

-Right, all locked?

0:18:100:18:12

All done?

0:18:120:18:13

-Yeah?

-Flaps open?

-We're OK.

0:18:130:18:15

Everything is locked, all the bolts are down.

0:18:150:18:17

-Yeah.

-Right, ready to go.

-Brilliant, let's go, then.

0:18:170:18:19

Right, Mummy in round the back.

0:18:190:18:21

The Pembrokeshire show has been a cornerstone

0:18:380:18:40

of the Welsh agricultural community since 1959.

0:18:400:18:44

The Pembrokeshire County show is the largest three-day show in Wales.

0:18:440:18:49

We're proud of that.

0:18:490:18:51

Following the Royal Welsh, we are the biggest agricultural show in Wales.

0:18:510:18:54

And that's something we're very proud of.

0:18:540:18:56

It is one of the most prestigious events in the farming calendar.

0:18:560:19:00

It's a big show tucked away almost in a corner of the country.

0:19:000:19:06

It's about the varieties of livestock that we have,

0:19:070:19:11

not only in Wales,

0:19:110:19:13

but in the rest of the country.

0:19:130:19:15

It allows the general public to get a glimpse of what farming is about.

0:19:150:19:21

To win here is a huge honour

0:19:220:19:24

and brings real benefit to their farms and their futures.

0:19:240:19:28

It's 8am and the sheep farmers are beginning to arrive.

0:19:350:19:39

No rain!

0:19:390:19:41

First job of the day?

0:19:410:19:43

Find the sheep pens.

0:19:430:19:44

Oh, I'm standing in my pen, thank you.

0:19:550:19:58

Just identified our pens.

0:19:580:20:00

We've got five pens here, which is right near the entrance, as well,

0:20:000:20:03

which is fantastic, so it makes unloading nice and easy.

0:20:030:20:06

There's a nice runway just to run them down, so, yeah,

0:20:060:20:10

it should work quite well.

0:20:100:20:11

With the sheep pens found, now the easy bit -

0:20:110:20:14

putting the sheep in them.

0:20:140:20:16

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:20:160:20:18

We're just trying to get the trailer back to here so we can unload them easily.

0:20:180:20:22

Come on, girls. Just don't want them going the other way.

0:20:280:20:31

That's it.

0:20:310:20:32

No, no, no, no, no.

0:20:320:20:34

No, no!

0:20:340:20:35

-There's one...

-Oh, God.

0:20:350:20:37

Derek's off to try and catch the ewe.

0:20:400:20:42

Come on, sweetie. Can you just...?

0:20:470:20:50

Derek, there!

0:20:500:20:52

Sheep rounded up, Mandy and Derek can get on with the show.

0:20:560:21:00

That's a good girl. There we are.

0:21:010:21:03

The competition is looking quite tough,

0:21:030:21:06

but down to the judge on the day.

0:21:060:21:08

Best case would be to win, of course,

0:21:080:21:10

but if we can come home with at least one ribbon it would be,

0:21:100:21:14

it would be lovely, you know?

0:21:140:21:16

It's nice to get some ribbons, no matter what colour,

0:21:170:21:20

but if we can get the red one, that's the one we want.

0:21:200:21:22

That's the one we want.

0:21:220:21:24

For the people who show here today,

0:21:270:21:29

I see it as their shop window, really.

0:21:290:21:32

It's their time to

0:21:320:21:35

show everybody how good their sheep are

0:21:350:21:37

and hopefully on the back of that they can come on to sell them

0:21:370:21:40

as, perhaps, breeding sheep to other breeders.

0:21:400:21:42

Team Dillon have also arrived.

0:21:490:21:52

On his legs. On his legs.

0:21:520:21:55

Spray in there to get his legs nice and white.

0:21:550:21:57

Yeah, OK, you have a patter now to pat him down.

0:21:570:21:59

It's all hands on deck as they divide and conquer,

0:21:590:22:03

clipping, pruning, and combing.

0:22:030:22:06

Looking on, looking nice, looking his best.

0:22:060:22:10

Neil has a few trick up his sleeve to enhance his ram's features.

0:22:100:22:15

Get those horns shining.

0:22:150:22:17

Get him looking good. Last minute prep now.

0:22:170:22:20

Final stages before we go into the ring.

0:22:200:22:23

I think this is Tekkers about ready to go.

0:22:230:22:25

Five-year-old Iestyn is also getting ready to compete.

0:22:270:22:31

This is Brian the ram lamb.

0:22:310:22:33

He's been to a few shows now.

0:22:350:22:37

We've had two or three champions with him.

0:22:370:22:39

He's not that big but again he's marked really well.

0:22:390:22:42

-And he's mine.

-And he's yours.

0:22:420:22:44

Yep.

0:22:440:22:45

It's almost competition time,

0:22:500:22:52

and in the announcement booth today's MCs are testing the system.

0:22:520:22:56

Across the showground,

0:23:030:23:05

crowds are beginning to enjoy all that Pembrokeshire has to offer.

0:23:050:23:09

I do sheep shearing, so I'm in the ring, along with Annette,

0:23:110:23:15

showing the sheep.

0:23:150:23:16

Derek is on the sidelines.

0:23:160:23:18

And I'm official photographer.

0:23:180:23:20

So I shall be doing that role, as well.

0:23:200:23:23

Well, the dream!

0:23:230:23:25

Which is champion, but...

0:23:250:23:28

-Champion sheep.

-Would just be...

0:23:280:23:30

-But...

-Ridiculously out there.

-Yeah.

0:23:300:23:33

Welcoming you to the Pembrokeshire County show.

0:23:330:23:36

We'll be very shortly starting the sheep section classes

0:23:360:23:40

with the Charollais, the Suffolk, the Beltex,

0:23:400:23:43

the Torwen, Torddu Badger face,

0:23:430:23:46

and the any other rare breed sections.

0:23:460:23:48

-Good boy.

-Right, boys, are we looking smart?

0:23:500:23:53

Yeah?

0:23:540:23:55

I think that's yours.

0:24:000:24:02

And mine.

0:24:020:24:03

Mandy's friend Annette is a willing assistant.

0:24:080:24:11

Annette and I will both go out,

0:24:120:24:14

we'll leave here with one sheep each, each time.

0:24:140:24:16

We know what we're doing, where we're going,

0:24:160:24:19

but it's just a case of, right, ready?

0:24:190:24:21

Let's go, then.

0:24:210:24:22

Annette is showing the Greyface Dartmoor,

0:24:290:24:32

and Mandy, the Leicester Longwool.

0:24:320:24:36

But not before a quick cup of tea for the nerves.

0:24:360:24:39

That's better.

0:24:390:24:41

I think we're going.

0:24:440:24:45

Thank you.

0:24:470:24:48

And it's competition time.

0:24:480:24:50

There we go, there's a good boy.

0:24:500:24:52

-Right, we are off.

-Yes.

0:24:520:24:55

Today's judge is John Thorley.

0:24:550:24:57

-Morning.

-Morning, how are you?

0:24:570:24:59

Or good afternoon, or whatever it is.

0:24:590:25:00

There are nine sheep in this class, and the standard looks high.

0:25:000:25:04

I'm looking for an animal with a strong leg at each corner,

0:25:040:25:11

a good mouth,

0:25:110:25:12

because all of that is important.

0:25:120:25:15

The sheep which have wool,

0:25:150:25:16

they need to have that wool in such a way

0:25:160:25:20

that it allows it to be produced for garments.

0:25:200:25:24

It's Mandy's turn and she's worried that her ram may be a bit frisky.

0:25:250:25:30

-Hello.

-He's not overly keen on having his testicles checked,

0:25:300:25:33

so I'll have to hang onto him.

0:25:330:25:35

-Just to warn you.

-I don't think I would.

0:25:350:25:38

Thank you.

0:25:380:25:39

He actually enjoyed it.

0:25:430:25:45

You've obviously got the touch.

0:25:450:25:47

Can we come round that way, please?

0:25:490:25:51

So far, so good.

0:25:510:25:53

Mandy may be a novice but she's holding her own in the ring.

0:25:530:25:56

Pull him in over here, actually, please.

0:25:580:26:00

With Mandy's official photographer on the sideline,

0:26:020:26:05

it's Judge John's final chance to look them over.

0:26:050:26:09

How many prizes have we got?

0:26:190:26:21

Five.

0:26:210:26:23

Five, one, two, three, four, five.

0:26:230:26:25

And he's found a winner.

0:26:250:26:26

Right, congratulations.

0:26:260:26:29

Mandy hasn't got a red rosette...

0:26:300:26:32

-Well done.

-Thank you so much.

0:26:320:26:34

..but fourth place out of nine is a respectable result.

0:26:360:26:40

Got a ribbon, that's what we want.

0:26:400:26:42

Off you go.

0:27:000:27:02

Come on, boy.

0:27:020:27:03

Come on.

0:27:030:27:04

Rhian and her boys are next up with their Beltex ram.

0:27:040:27:08

Keep going. Keep walking, you, keep walking.

0:27:080:27:10

That's if she can wrangle them all into the ring.

0:27:100:27:14

Come on, come on, now.

0:27:140:27:16

Come on, boy, keep going.

0:27:160:27:18

Keep going, you.

0:27:180:27:19

It's the kind of multitasking every farming mum is used to.

0:27:210:27:25

Come on.

0:27:260:27:28

Steady now.

0:27:280:27:30

Come on, boy.

0:27:300:27:31

Come on. Come on.

0:27:320:27:35

He's a feisty one. Come on.

0:27:370:27:38

All right, wait a minute, wait a minute.

0:27:380:27:42

They're in, just in time.

0:27:420:27:45

There's a new judge and it's his first time at Pembrokeshire.

0:27:480:27:52

I've got my best jacket on today, so, and my hair cut,

0:27:520:27:55

so hopefully I don't look too bad out in the ring.

0:27:550:27:57

And there won't be too much criticism, hopefully, from the sidelines.

0:27:570:28:02

Stand up, stand up for the judge.

0:28:100:28:13

Rhian is trying to train young Euan in the art of showing,

0:28:130:28:16

but he's only got the loo on his mind.

0:28:160:28:19

All right, in a minute now, wait a minute.

0:28:190:28:22

Hopefully the judge won't take long to decide.

0:28:220:28:25

People have gone to a lot of time getting their sheep ready at home,

0:28:260:28:30

and preparation, you know?

0:28:300:28:31

Getting all the wool and everything right.

0:28:310:28:34

It's a big day for them, yeah,

0:28:340:28:35

so hopefully they'll be all gunning for a number one position.

0:28:350:28:39

Right, now, the judge is coming.

0:28:410:28:43

Thankfully a decision's been made.

0:28:460:28:48

Thank you very much, Roger, thank you, lovely.

0:28:520:28:55

There's relief all round as the ram gets second place.

0:28:550:28:59

Other hand, that's a good boy, well done, well done.

0:28:590:29:02

And Euan will get to go.

0:29:020:29:04

We've got second, haven't we?

0:29:040:29:06

Pleased with that.

0:29:060:29:07

Pleased. Come on then. Up we go.

0:29:110:29:14

Back in the tent, Neil also has some good news

0:29:140:29:16

about their other entrants.

0:29:160:29:18

Really pleased. We came second.

0:29:180:29:20

-And we've had two firsts.

-Good, well done.

-Brilliant.

0:29:200:29:23

Wait a minute.

0:29:230:29:24

It's almost midday.

0:29:340:29:35

The crowds are filling up

0:29:350:29:37

but it looks like the weather is about to turn.

0:29:370:29:42

Despite having wonderful weather here this morning,

0:29:420:29:46

we are experiencing a little change in the weather.

0:29:460:29:49

It's time to bring out those brollies and the warmer coat.

0:29:490:29:53

No-one is put off by the storm,

0:29:550:29:57

and on the other side of the field

0:29:570:29:59

the craft and horticultural exhibitions push on.

0:29:590:30:02

They are as much a part of show day as the livestock.

0:30:020:30:05

The dry stone wallers are some of the most traditional rural craftsmen

0:30:080:30:12

in the country.

0:30:120:30:14

The history of dry stone walling goes back centuries, like.

0:30:140:30:17

They were dry stone walling in the Bronze Age,

0:30:170:30:19

corralling their stock through to the Romans.

0:30:190:30:24

Most of our walls around here were built

0:30:240:30:26

by Napoleonic prisoners of war.

0:30:260:30:28

That was 1810 to 1840, around then.

0:30:280:30:32

So, there's a lot of history going on.

0:30:330:30:35

With no cement to fill the gaps,

0:30:350:30:37

there's nooks and crannies for insects to hide in

0:30:370:30:40

whilst the walls themselves provide shelter for livestock.

0:30:400:30:44

You go up and down the country, you'll see the walls

0:30:440:30:47

up in the Lake District through to the Dales, the Cotswolds,

0:30:470:30:50

it's there, it's a nice feature, apart from anything else.

0:30:500:30:52

The livestock tuck behind it on a day like this and they're lovely and warm.

0:30:520:30:55

They're out of the wind, not like us, and they're happy as Larry.

0:30:550:30:58

There are several husband and wives that do it very much like hobbies

0:30:580:31:03

and us volunteers within the dry stone walling association.

0:31:030:31:07

You've also got whole families that do it.

0:31:070:31:09

The craft has been handed down through the generations.

0:31:090:31:13

So, we meet quite a few couples, don't we?

0:31:130:31:16

Yes.

0:31:160:31:17

The weather is going from bad to worse.

0:31:210:31:23

But it's not just the dry stone wallers who are pushing on,

0:31:250:31:29

the falcons are also refusing to give up.

0:31:290:31:32

The county show invite us here every single year to do

0:31:320:31:35

flying demonstrations with the birds.

0:31:350:31:37

So we usually fly somewhere in the region of about

0:31:370:31:39

eight to ten different species of birds here.

0:31:390:31:41

All the birds get to know us and trust us and that enables us

0:31:450:31:49

to fly them without them being scared.

0:31:490:31:51

Obviously, if they were scared they wouldn't want to come back to us.

0:31:510:31:56

This afternoon, the rain has come in.

0:31:560:31:58

So it's been quite a lot more wet and soggy than it was this morning.

0:31:580:32:01

It's Wales.

0:32:040:32:05

If we were really complaining about the weather all the time,

0:32:050:32:08

we wouldn't get anything done.

0:32:080:32:09

If you've just joined us around the livestock ring, good afternoon,

0:32:170:32:21

we are in the second stage of the beef cattle judging.

0:32:210:32:24

Back in the tent, it's Mandy's next competition.

0:32:250:32:29

Thankfully, it looks like the rain has stopped.

0:32:290:32:31

Sorry, I tied that up earlier.

0:32:340:32:35

So far, they are doing well.

0:32:350:32:37

I'm just putting the first rosette on there.

0:32:400:32:42

I'm just making room.

0:32:420:32:44

But that elusive first place is still out there.

0:32:450:32:49

Mandy's hope rests on her favourite Dorset Down, Kai.

0:32:500:32:54

You look very tired.

0:32:580:33:00

-Afternoon again.

-Hello.

0:33:030:33:06

Good boy, good boy.

0:33:080:33:09

Derek is practising his best paparazzi moves.

0:33:160:33:20

He might need them if Kai wins a coveted rosette.

0:33:200:33:23

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:33:260:33:28

Will you parade, please?

0:33:280:33:30

Clockwise.

0:33:300:33:33

It's Mandy's last chance to stand out from the rest.

0:33:350:33:38

Come on. Good boy.

0:33:420:33:43

Pull up and in here, please.

0:33:470:33:49

Good boy.

0:33:490:33:51

Can you scooch round, please?

0:33:520:33:56

Yeah, brilliant.

0:34:090:34:11

Thank you.

0:34:110:34:12

-Well done.

-Thank you so much.

0:34:120:34:15

-Thank you.

-Well done.

-Thank you very much indeed.

0:34:150:34:17

-Well done.

-Yes, yes!

0:34:170:34:21

First prize.

0:34:210:34:23

Finally the result they have dreamt of.

0:34:230:34:26

Yes!

0:34:260:34:28

Always!

0:34:330:34:34

Thank you. Thank you very much.

0:34:340:34:37

OK.

0:34:440:34:45

Come on, Kai.

0:34:450:34:47

Now you can go to sleep.

0:34:530:34:54

Good boy.

0:34:540:34:55

I'm just so pleased with him.

0:34:570:34:59

He's such a good, little stamp for his breed.

0:35:010:35:05

Although he just wanted to sleep all the time,

0:35:050:35:08

he's behaved himself brilliantly.

0:35:080:35:10

And this is only his second show, so I'm really, really pleased.

0:35:100:35:12

I'm pleased with the results we've had.

0:35:120:35:15

It's fantastic. Beyond what I really thought,

0:35:150:35:18

far beyond what I honestly thought.

0:35:180:35:21

And I always get very emotional.

0:35:280:35:31

You are such a good boy.

0:35:310:35:33

The Dorset which won that was a very good quality Dorset.

0:35:330:35:38

In the company that he was in, I thought he did very well.

0:35:380:35:41

Despite the damp,

0:35:470:35:49

the livestock competitions are still pulling in the crowds.

0:35:490:35:52

Ladies and gentlemen, whilst we're waiting for a few

0:35:530:35:56

of the cattle classes to recommence for this afternoon,

0:35:560:35:59

I have the final results, or indeed the championship results,

0:35:590:36:04

of the Welsh Black cattle section, which was held earlier this morning.

0:36:040:36:09

Safely sheltered from the rain and the mud

0:36:100:36:13

is a dry tent full of well-dressed women.

0:36:130:36:15

They've gathered for Pembrokeshire's Ladies Day,

0:36:160:36:19

an event that started just over 13 years ago.

0:36:190:36:22

Each year they raise money for different charities

0:36:240:36:27

as the women of the county compete for best dressed and best hat.

0:36:270:36:31

While the ladies enjoy their parade...

0:36:360:36:40

Right, go on, then, let's go.

0:36:400:36:41

..back in the pens it's finally young Iestyn's moment.

0:36:410:36:44

But there's a problem.

0:36:460:36:48

The judge has spotted an admin error.

0:36:480:36:51

It's not in the catalogue.

0:36:510:36:52

No, but it has been entered for definite,

0:36:520:36:54

because I spoke to the secretary and they changed it all round.

0:36:540:36:57

OK, so he's not on the catalogue, but he's paid an entry, so.

0:36:570:36:59

I hadn't entered ewe lamb, I spoke to the young lady, she changed it,

0:37:020:37:06

I paid for it, and she said that was fine.

0:37:060:37:07

It's been changed in the office?

0:37:070:37:09

Yes. As far as I know, I spoke to someone on the phone

0:37:090:37:11

when the entries came through, and she was supposed to change it all.

0:37:110:37:15

And it hasn't got through to the catalogue since.

0:37:150:37:17

Well, obviously not, no.

0:37:170:37:18

Because usually once the catalogue's gone to print it's final,

0:37:190:37:23

but if you arranged it beforehand...

0:37:230:37:27

She told me that was fine.

0:37:270:37:28

Because we hadn't entered the ewe lamb, we'd entered the tup lamb,

0:37:280:37:32

and she just changed it around and said it was all OK.

0:37:320:37:35

Winning ribbons here holds great prestige.

0:37:360:37:40

Rules are strict and nothing can happen

0:37:400:37:42

without a ruling from the stewards.

0:37:420:37:44

We've got a slight, slight delay in proceedings.

0:37:500:37:53

There's a problem that my ram, they didn't think he's been entered.

0:37:530:37:57

So they're just double-checking. I've spoken to someone on the phone,

0:37:570:38:00

it should all be fine, but it's protocol,

0:38:000:38:02

so we've just got to get it all right and then we'll be off to go, hopefully.

0:38:020:38:06

All the family and spectators can do is to be patient.

0:38:060:38:10

We're just waiting for the stewards to agree

0:38:100:38:13

that he can show the sheep, basically.

0:38:130:38:16

There's been a mix-up with the entries.

0:38:160:38:19

At last the verdict comes through.

0:38:190:38:22

-Are we OK?

-Yeah, yeah.

-We're good, right, finally.

0:38:220:38:25

Hold him there, you're in.

0:38:250:38:27

Here we go again.

0:38:300:38:32

Even though there are only two entries,

0:38:320:38:34

Iestyn's lamb is not guaranteed a prize.

0:38:340:38:38

Both lambs could walk away with nothing if the judge doesn't think

0:38:400:38:43

they're up to standard.

0:38:430:38:45

But the judge seems to be impressed.

0:38:510:38:53

I'm happy.

0:38:530:38:54

And it's a second-place for Iestyn.

0:39:050:39:07

-Well done, all right.

-OK, say thank you very much.

0:39:070:39:10

Well done, well done, thank you.

0:39:100:39:12

Very pleased, yeah, excellent.

0:39:150:39:17

Neil, Rhian, and the boys have had a very successful show.

0:39:170:39:21

So, we've had two firsts, two seconds so far,

0:39:210:39:25

-really pleased Tekkers had a first, very pleased with him.

-Very pleased.

0:39:250:39:29

As the judging day comes to an end, there's just one last event.

0:39:290:39:33

If you get a first prize,

0:39:330:39:35

all the first prize sheep will go into the championship.

0:39:350:39:38

-Against each other.

-Against each other, so there will be

0:39:380:39:42

two rams, a ram lamb, a ewe, and a ewe lamb in the class.

0:39:420:39:46

The final championship title is one they have been working towards all year.

0:39:460:39:50

There's always a little bit of nerves, of course.

0:39:500:39:54

But we're going to go for it.

0:39:540:39:56

It will put Neil and Rhian one step closer to their dream of owning their farm.

0:39:560:40:01

It's brilliant news.

0:40:230:40:24

They've won the championship title.

0:40:240:40:26

Champions! Excellent!

0:40:290:40:32

It puts Tekkers on the map, and it puts the Dillon family up there.

0:40:320:40:36

Well done, wahey!

0:40:360:40:38

The Pembrokeshire Show will continue tomorrow,

0:40:500:40:53

but for the two families, judging is now over.

0:40:530:40:56

Time for our farmers to stand back and reflect.

0:41:020:41:05

Good boy. Well done, Neil.

0:41:050:41:06

Well done.

0:41:060:41:08

So, so proud of what we've achieved.

0:41:080:41:10

We're a hard-working family.

0:41:110:41:14

We haven't got a large flock to choose from.

0:41:140:41:16

But we have, in our eyes, got good quality,

0:41:160:41:19

and quality counts for a lot.

0:41:190:41:21

Highlight of the day was...

0:41:210:41:23

Red rosette.

0:41:230:41:25

That red one, that much sought-after, longed-for,

0:41:250:41:28

dreamt-about red one.

0:41:280:41:30

And we got it.

0:41:300:41:31

It's been a day of challenges.

0:41:310:41:33

Teamwork.

0:41:360:41:37

Right, I think we're going.

0:41:370:41:39

And rewards.

0:41:390:41:41

Yes, yes, yes! Champion!

0:41:410:41:45

Come on, boys.

0:41:450:41:46

But above all, it's shown how a year of dedication

0:41:460:41:50

and hard work has paid off.

0:41:500:41:52

You're hungry, aren't you?

0:41:520:41:54

I don't do this very often.

0:41:540:41:56

And I just think, I'm up against some really experienced show people

0:41:560:42:02

with great big, really quality sheep,

0:42:020:42:06

really quality sheep.

0:42:060:42:08

We have a smallholding.

0:42:080:42:10

We try to be as self-sufficient as possible.

0:42:100:42:13

But I'm passionate about rare breeds.

0:42:130:42:14

I only do three, four shows a year, and to come along to one

0:42:160:42:20

of this standard, and to get placed in...

0:42:200:42:24

Well, we've got four rosettes there, out of five classes, it's just...

0:42:240:42:27

..beyond what I ever thought.

0:42:290:42:31

It's better than I've ever done before.

0:42:310:42:34

It really is. And he's just amazing.

0:42:340:42:36

Over the moon. Absolutely over the moon.

0:42:380:42:41

To have that championship is excellent.

0:42:420:42:45

What we've come for. Great stuff.

0:42:450:42:47

Great success, let's go for a pint.

0:42:470:42:49

Let's go for a pint, Mrs Dillon.
