Had a quick look at the competition. I'm in with a chance. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35

Well done. Wahey! | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
It's show business, folks! | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44

SHE GIGGLES | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
-..and lows... -No, no, no, no, no! | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
..for the dedicated farmers who give everything to walk away a champion. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:02
No way! | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
For thousands of years, all sorts of livestock | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
has been found in southwest England's breathtaking landscape. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:22
-Go on, then. -One of them is the Dexter cow. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
Once considered rare, it's now making its return. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
Let's have a little scratch, eh? | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
Standing less than 50 inches high, | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
they're fast becoming a popular breed for beef and dairy. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
We didn't realise that they're cattle with attitude. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
Today, we're meeting two families | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
who have taken on this unique animal. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
Jeff and Bev Munsey, and Kim Sharpe. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
We enjoy it. There's not a day that goes by that we don't enjoy it. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:54
Go on, off we go. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
They're getting ready to attend the Sedgemoor Livestock Auction... | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
Up we come. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
..for its once-a-year special rare-breed sale day. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
Sorry, I'm a total novice! | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
-I don't know what I'm doing! -210, 220! | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
220! | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10 | |
Auctions are a familiar stomping ground for Kim. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:14
480, 500! Thank you! | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
-500... -But this will be a first for Jeff and Bev. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
240! 240! Out wide! | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
I think this could be quite addictive, you know, Jeff? | 0:02:19 | 0:02:24
Aye, could well be. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:25
Nestled in the heart of Exmoor's National Park | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
is the home of Jeff and Bev Munsey. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
A beautiful day, isn't it? | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
Here, on their 63-acre farm, they keep a small herd of Dexter cattle, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
and a flock of sheep. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
Along with pigs, a dozen or so goats, geese, ducks and chickens, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:54
there are even ten alpacas. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
And a few pets, as well. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
Jeff and Bev... | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
OK, Bev, should we go check on the sheep? | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
..both in their 60s, are relatively new farmers. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
They moved to Knighton Farm six years ago. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
Before then, they both ran a successful manufacturing company. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
I've been in factories all my life. I've always been in engineering. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
So, this was something completely different. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
We had a sheet-metal company, making all sorts of products. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
And it was good fun building the company, and it gave us a good life. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:33
But having built it, just running it day to day was a bit mundane | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
and would get more difficult. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
So, we thought we'd try something different. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
Come on, then! | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
Breakfast time! | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
It was Bev that came up with the idea for a new life. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:53
I've always had a hankering for farming. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
And then we got together, I sort of... | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
-Talked me into it. -Talked you into it, yes! | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
It was never... I don't think it was ever in my radar, but... | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
Once I got into it, I thought, "Yeah, this is really good." | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
And despite the hard work, they haven't looked back. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
I'm going to be doing some fencing down at the bottom next. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:22
-Well, maybe even this week. So, it's time I fixed this, really. -Yeah. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
There are downsides but, overall, it's great. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:31
Look at where we work. Look at it. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
-It's fantastic! -Better than your average factory. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
For Jeff, the transition from engineering, | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
where everything is built on precision, to farming | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
has been the biggest challenge. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
I think I love farming because...it's the freedom. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
I plan my days, and every day it goes wrong. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
-Well, it goes differently. -That's for sure! | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
Yeah, that's a better way of putting it. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:58
You cannot plan 100% in what we're doing. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
It's just nice, you just go with the flow. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
It's frustrating at times, but a lot of the time, it's just brilliant. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
Jeff and Bev now lead the idealistic lifestyle | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
the couple had always dreamt of. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
Livestock farming was only part of the dream. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
For Bev, it was the beginning of a new lease of life - | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
from spinning wool from their alpacas and sheep | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
to becoming an artisan baker. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:27
This is for my market stand in Dulverton on Wednesdays. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:35
There's my produce and... | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
..there's also home-made cakes | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
and preserves, | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
and various craft things. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
So, I have all my alpaca stuff there, as well. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
Farming means you can grow and rear your own ingredients, | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
and Bev's savoury pastries are an excellent example. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
Yes, definitely our own pork. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
I started with sausage rolls because they're always fairly popular, | 0:06:00 | 0:06:04
aren't they? I'd like to come up | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
with a real range of different pasties, you know? | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09
Beef and Stilton, that kind of thing. That would be nice. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:13
This kind of life has been something I've really always wanted to do. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:20
But I guess it, in many ways, seems like a dream. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
Jeff's more a city... or he was more a city person, | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
but soon realised the advantages of it | 0:06:29 | 0:06:34
and I think he's adapted to it even better than I have now, really. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:40
Keen to put his engineering know-how to use, | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
Jeff pooled his knowledge into making their farm | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
as self-sufficient as possible. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
We run a biomass boiler, | 0:06:49 | 0:06:50
and that heats the farmhouse and the cottages. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
It runs off logs, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
so it has to be fed manually. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
And you have to be there. | 0:06:58 | 0:06:59
You can't just leave it all the time on its own. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
We went that route because we can be self-sufficient on our own land. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:11
And it just seems the right thing to do to it. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
But it is difficult to keep up with. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
Farm life is... it's on its own, I think. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:25
It's a completely different way of life. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:28
It's very physical | 0:07:28 | 0:07:31
and it's 24 hours a day. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
So you have to, I think, be the right frame-of-mind person to do it. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:39
And like everything in life, you can only find out by doing it. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
I'm envious of the guys that have done it since being kids, | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
because they've got all the experience, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
they've got everything sorted out. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
Whereas I'm years behind them. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
But we'll catch up. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
Still in Somerset, 16 miles up the road, is the town of Minehead. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:09
This is home to 23-year-old Kim. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
Kim is also new to farming, | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
and rents 120 acres of scattered farmland with her parents, | 0:08:16 | 0:08:21
Nikki and Kevin. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
This means they have to spend a lot of time | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
travelling between the various rented sites. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
The dream is to eventually buy their own farm. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
So, our main holding up here is about 80 acres. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:36
We've got another three acres, half a mile. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
We've got 40 acres out at Timberscombe, | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
which is about four miles, five miles. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
It's just a case of grabbing what we can, | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
because we haven't got a farm that's got it all. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
It's quite a challenge, having all the animals in different places, | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
because it takes up a lot of time. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
With land scattered around the area, | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
a rented barn is the closest thing to their farming headquarters. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
It may not be theirs, | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
but the views over the Bristol Channel make up for a lot. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
Like most farmers, work for Kim begins early. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
Daily routine - come to the farm, check the turkeys first, | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
because they're the easiest ones to do, really. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
We can just make sure that everything is happy. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:32
We give them mirrors to look at each other. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:35
They spend ages just pecking the mirrors | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
and looking at themselves, looking at their reflection. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:41
Anything they can peck at, scratch at, | 0:09:41 | 0:09:43
enables them to stop pecking and scratching each other, really. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
We started with turkeys just because it was another animal I could have, | 0:09:49 | 0:09:53
and something else I could try. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
And then we literally just do them now to give them away to landlords, | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
family and friends. And it's just a bit of fun, really, | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
and something we produce at Christmas. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
And we know that we've produced it so it tastes good on Christmas Day. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:08
Kim was just 16 when she realised she wanted to become a farmer. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:13
So, I started seven years ago. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:14
Sweet-talked the parents around to it. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
Purchased my first cow and calf, called Cornflower, | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
and since then I've got the bug. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
That Christmas, my parents bought me my first show cow on Christmas Day. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25
You came up with the idea, | 0:10:25 | 0:10:26
I think you put a tinsel collar on this cow, didn't you? | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
Yeah, we left her in the field. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:30
And just left her in the field for Kim to discover. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
There was snow on the ground, it was lovely. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
She just spotted this extra cow and she thought, "That's not mine. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
"What's going on with our cattle?" And so, "Well, go and have a look." | 0:10:39 | 0:10:43
And she just went over and she just started crying. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:45
Now 23, Kim has had to overcome many hurdles by learning on the job. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:02
It's been quite a challenge, being a young woman | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
trying to get into farming. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
A lot of people laughed and thought, "Oh, yeah, | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
"she's just a girl with a small cow and she's not going to go very far." | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
Especially through the teenage years of people kind of | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
taking the mick because you're not out partying all the time, | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
you're on the farm. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
Actually, looking back, it's just pushed me even harder. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
With that fearless and determined attitude, | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
Kim and her parents have built up a herd of 50 cattle. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
And to make owning a farm a reality, | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
they are working twice as hard to get there. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
Kim trained as a veterinary nurse. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
She now works in a livestock identification company. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:51
They supply the farming industry with monitored numbered tags. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
So, this is my day job. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
I changed jobs about 18 months ago, | 0:11:58 | 0:12:00
took it on so it was more 8 till 5, | 0:12:00 | 0:12:02
so I had time to focus on the farm, really flexible hours, | 0:12:02 | 0:12:06
and it kind of suits, it's still in the farming sector. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
It's quite nice in the day to work in the office | 0:12:11 | 0:12:13
when it's raining, because you are inside | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
and you know you're kind of earning your money without getting wet. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
Kim's dad Kevin also splits his time between his full-time job | 0:12:29 | 0:12:33
as an engineer at the water board and helping to run the farm. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:37
This is a family that never has a weekend off. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
Seems like a lot of work some days. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
Everyone has days when they are feeling really energetic | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
and up with it, and other days... | 0:12:56 | 0:12:57
Like, there was a day last week when we went home | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
and had a cup of tea first and sat down | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
and we sat down and we sat down! | 0:13:02 | 0:13:04
But we enjoy it. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
There is not a day that goes by where we don't enjoy it. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
It is also dictated by the workload, isn't it? | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
If you've got hay on the ground and the weather's turning, | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
-you've got to work the clock round. -You have got to crack on. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
But it is hard work between all the different places we've got to go. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
You spend most of your time running around just travelling to different | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
fields here, there and everywhere, even though they're... | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
a couple of acres here, a couple of acres there, but... | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
Yeah, it enables us to survive as we are, | 0:13:29 | 0:13:32
but we can't sustain this lifestyle going forward | 0:13:32 | 0:13:35
unless we can pull all the land together. | 0:13:35 | 0:13:39
-Pull it together... -It has to be in one block. -Expand and go further. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:43
Make it a proper business. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:44
But despite their plans for the future, | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
they've found farming to be a tricky and unpredictable industry. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:54
Last year, disaster struck when the family were dealt a serious blow. | 0:13:55 | 0:14:00
25% of Kim's cattle were struck by tuberculosis | 0:14:00 | 0:14:04
and had to be destroyed, | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
including some of her champion stock. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
With bills to pay, Kim was forced to come up with a plan | 0:14:09 | 0:14:14
and that plan was to buy sheep. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
There's always a market for lamb, | 0:14:16 | 0:14:18
so we went out and bought a load more | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
and we have built them up from there. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
I enjoy lambing, as well, so it is quite nice to have that. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:31
Come on, girls! | 0:14:31 | 0:14:32
Come on! | 0:14:35 | 0:14:36
Come here! | 0:14:36 | 0:14:37
So, we've got about 150 sheep in total, and these are the 100 ewes | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
that are in here that are ready to go to the ram | 0:14:42 | 0:14:45
in a couple of weeks' time. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:46
It's just their lambs that are left over, which are retainers. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
The ewe lambs of last year will stay on | 0:14:49 | 0:14:51
and the others will get fattened and go to market. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
With extra livestock to care for, | 0:14:54 | 0:14:57
Kim and Kevin increased their workload but saved the farm. | 0:14:57 | 0:15:00
I would say it is a little bit tough | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
having to come out in all weathers, but it's not too bad. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
When it is driving rain and you have just got home from work and you have | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
a quick cup of tea and you have to go out in it, it's not so nice. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
Just down the road, Jeff and Bev are busy with their Dexter cows. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:36
A breed native to Ireland, | 0:15:36 | 0:15:38
they were originally introduced to England in 1882. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:43
The tallest Dexters reach the dizzy height of 50 inches | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
and produce excellent, flavoursome beef. They are commonly known | 0:15:46 | 0:15:50
as the smallholder's favourite across the world. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:54
He knows, don't you? | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
We went into Dexters because, | 0:15:57 | 0:15:58
not being experienced farmers, | 0:15:58 | 0:16:01
we thought, well, small cows, nice and easy to handle. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
-Wrong. -Wrong. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
They are a bit like deer, really. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
They jump fences and kick their heels up quite a lot. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:13
COW MOOS | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
Getting the Dexters was definitely Jeff's idea. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
Yes, I thought the cows would be a good idea because I like beef. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:22
So, we started looking at them at shows and thought, | 0:16:22 | 0:16:26
"Oh, these are a nice, manageable size." | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
But we didn't realise that they're cattle with attitude. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
Absolutely right, yes. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:35
If you ask a Dexter to turn left, he will turn right, | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
without any doubt at all. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:39
From a simple dream six years ago of rearing cattle... | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
..their farm has grown into so much more. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:50
We started with two cows. They have since gone on, | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
but we have bred from their offspring, as well, | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
and here we are with our new bull and his new harem. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:06
There it is, there it is, there it is. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
Clearly, when we started, we knew absolutely nothing about cattle, | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
or any of the animals, to be fair, and you learn some by mistake, | 0:17:11 | 0:17:15
some by asking and some just by observation, really, | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
spend time with them, | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
watch them, try and understand their behaviour. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
All right, Titus? You all right there, mate? | 0:17:23 | 0:17:27
Let's have a little scratch, eh? | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
You get to know what to do and what not to do | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
because it would be quite painful if you didn't, to be honest. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
Their current herd of Dexters has reached its limit | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
because too many of the animals share the same bloodline. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
These five will be going to market | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
because they are related to our bull, so obviously, | 0:17:49 | 0:17:52
we can't breed from them, and five is too many | 0:17:52 | 0:17:56
to keep on the farm over winter, so we are hoping they will sell. | 0:17:56 | 0:18:00
They are all good pedigree, they are all good specimens, | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
so they should, in theory, do well. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:06
This is the first time Jeff and Bev | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
will be selling cattle at an auction, | 0:18:10 | 0:18:12
so with no experience they are hitting the internet | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
to do a bit of research. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
We are just looking through a website with some Dexters on | 0:18:17 | 0:18:21
to see if we can get an idea of prices. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
It's difficult to know what to expect, isn't it? | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
We have never done it before so, yeah. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:29
It varies by year, but prices can run between £200 | 0:18:29 | 0:18:33
and £2,000 for a Dexter cow. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:34
You know, anything can happen on the day, really. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:38
I suppose, like any auction, | 0:18:38 | 0:18:39
if two people want it, the price will go up. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
-If nobody wants it, well... -Aww. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:45
We bring it home. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
Oh, dear. No, that is not going to happen. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:49
-No. -We'll come home with an empty trailer. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
And a full wallet. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
Come on, then. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:11
Kim and Kevin have poured all their efforts into growing their herd | 0:19:12 | 0:19:16
of Dexters so are hoping for a good price on auction day. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
They now have the difficult task of deciding | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
which cows they think will fetch the best price. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
This heifer here will go up. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:29
Then there's the red heifer, 46. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:33
-Yeah. -And the black heifer, 45. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:36
-Oh, right, you're taking three? -Yeah, three, and then the bull. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:39
-Yeah? -Yeah, that's fine. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:41
Take them up. This one here, 47. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
All registered livestock in the UK are numbered | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
but pedigree breeds are also given individual names. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:53
So, we've got Midnight Montana, | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
we've got Malibu, Sambuca, | 0:19:57 | 0:20:01
Tequila, Archers... | 0:20:01 | 0:20:03
..Blossom Hill. I forget them all now. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
The list goes on. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:10
The auction sales are the source of Kim's success, | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
and her father just can't help having a moment of pride. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:27
In seven years, you've gone from one cow to 45 plus. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:30
-Mm. -Two years later, we brought a couple of sheep on | 0:20:30 | 0:20:34
and you're up to nearly 200 sheep. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:35
That sort of stuff just doesn't happen on its own, | 0:20:35 | 0:20:39
it isn't an accident. The problem I've got with this, | 0:20:39 | 0:20:41
if I tell you how proud I am of you | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
and how much you've achieved in such a short time, | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
then you're just going to hold me to ransom with it. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
And next time we want to have a debate and a fall-out | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
and we're working hard together, I can't tell you. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:56
I can't put into words how much it means to see you | 0:20:56 | 0:21:00
follow my passion. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:03
Oh, my God! | 0:21:03 | 0:21:04
It is an amazingly powerful feeling of pride. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:09
It's finally time to get ready for the auction. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
I'm pretty nervous about the auction, I think. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42
I'd like to think whoever buys them will do right by them, | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
but, obviously, that's out of your control at that point. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:48
I'm still a bit on the nail-biting side, | 0:21:48 | 0:21:50
but I'm hoping I'll calm down by the time I get there. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:53
As long as there's lots of bidders there, we'll be fine. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:57
As well as the three heifers, | 0:21:59 | 0:22:01
Kim will also be entering her young bull. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:04
HE MOOS | 0:22:04 | 0:22:05
Yes, I know. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:07
So, hopefully, at Sedgemoor, we'll get the reserve price, | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
-or a bit more would be lovely. -A bit more would be a bonus. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
He certainly deserves it. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:15
He's got to be worth 600, hasn't he? | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
Yeah. I don't know if we can show people he's this quiet. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
It's a desirable feature, isn't it, being a nice, quiet boy. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:23
And that's it. He's just a baby, isn't he? | 0:22:23 | 0:22:25
-You've got to grow. -Lovely boy. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:27
No, I think that's something to be proud of. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:30
Kim's bull is halter trained, and so loading is a fairly simple affair. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:34
Up we come. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:36
Good lad. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:40
However, Jeff has not trained his, so he's come up with a plan. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:45
I'm just going to walk through their pen into the trailer, | 0:22:45 | 0:22:49
out of the passenger door, with the bucket of feed, | 0:22:49 | 0:22:52
and, hopefully, they'll follow me. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
Sounds good in theory. | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
Come on, then. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:04
Perhaps it's time for plan B - | 0:23:15 | 0:23:19
the old waving-your-arms trick. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
In we go. Come on, girl. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:23
Go on, off we go. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:24
Up we go. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:27
Good lad. | 0:23:29 | 0:23:30
That's it. That was no problem, was it? | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
Both our farming families have worked hard to build their herds. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:50
They are hoping to get the best prices they can at the auction, | 0:23:50 | 0:23:54
if they are to continue growing. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:56
It's 6.30am on Thursday | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
and the first of the sellers have just started to arrive. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:15
Sedgemoor Auction in Somerset is one of the largest auction houses | 0:24:15 | 0:24:19
in the country. By the end of today, | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
just under 2,000 animals will have changed hands. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
Today's rare-breed auction only happens once a year, | 0:24:26 | 0:24:30
so buyers and sellers travel from far and wide to be part of it. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:35
Today, we've got a lot of Dexters, excellent turnout, excellent entry. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:40
It's lovely, because it's a different audience, | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
it's a different clientele. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:43
You know, we see the rare-breed smallholders once a year | 0:24:43 | 0:24:46
and they come out and it's their day and they have a great day. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
Hundreds of people come through, | 0:24:57 | 0:24:59
because not only are the rare breeds having their sale, | 0:24:59 | 0:25:01
there's lots of poultry, there's a furniture sale, | 0:25:01 | 0:25:04
all the other stalls are open | 0:25:04 | 0:25:05
if you want to buy a cauliflower or a battery, everything's here. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
The day will follow a strict timetable. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:13
Before the auction begins, there's a red-rosette competition. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:18
Our farmers will have to get a move on | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
if they want their Dexters to be in it. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
-How exciting! Oh, that's sheep. -It says cows. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
For our auction newbies, | 0:25:25 | 0:25:26
the first thing to do is to figure out how everything works. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
Apparently, all the pens are marked with names, | 0:25:38 | 0:25:41
but I haven't been able to find ours. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:44
Oh, excuse me. Sorry. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:03
Sorry, I'm a total novice, I don't know what I'm doing. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:06
Um, these are ours. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:09
Oh, right, in the Dexters? OK. | 0:26:09 | 0:26:11
Finally, they've found their spot. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
That's good! | 0:26:19 | 0:26:20
-It's OK, girls. -Oh, what a mess you've made. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
You have, haven't you? | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
What a mess you've made! | 0:26:27 | 0:26:31
We've brought five with us. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:33
The oldest one's about 13 months | 0:26:33 | 0:26:35
and the rest are down to about six months. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:39
Come on, let's go. Come on, then. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
Our main aim is for them all to go. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
We need to have them away from the bull over winter | 0:26:44 | 0:26:48
when we bring them all in, because they're his daughters. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:51
It's more important for us to go home empty | 0:26:55 | 0:26:58
than to get the maximum price, really. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:01
Although that obviously would be very nice indeed. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:04
Of course, yes. So, if we get the right bidders. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:07
-Who knows? -Who knows, yeah. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:10
For Kim and Kevin, price is a little more important. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:15
Good lad. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:17
So, they've put a reserve of £600 on their bull. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
The three heifers will go for less, | 0:27:23 | 0:27:26
but Kim needs to get at least £250 on each. | 0:27:26 | 0:27:28
The aim of today is obviously to sell the animals for a good price, | 0:27:28 | 0:27:32
but it is also about reputation, and people see you out and about. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:35
People know who I am from the shows anyway, | 0:27:35 | 0:27:37
but it's all about advertising, knowing who we are, | 0:27:37 | 0:27:40
knowing what we stand for. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:41
The bull's down over there, the heifers are here. | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
They all seem quite happy at the moment. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:49
So, yeah, we just preparing them now ready for the show and sale. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
It's always quite a nervous time. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:53
You have a look at other people's animals and, you know, | 0:27:53 | 0:27:56
you worry that yours aren't enough. | 0:27:56 | 0:27:57
But, no, I'm happy with them. | 0:27:57 | 0:27:59
We know we've bred them ourselves, | 0:27:59 | 0:28:00
it's what we want to breed, so hopefully... | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
Not wanting to get lost again, | 0:28:05 | 0:28:07
Jeff and Bev head off for a bit of orientation | 0:28:07 | 0:28:10
and to find the auction hall. | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
Shall we have a wander down and have a quick look at the pigs? | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
Yes, have a quick look at the pigs. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:18
The Sedgemoor auction facility is the biggest in the southwest. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:25
Open since 2008, | 0:28:25 | 0:28:27
some 3 million animals have been traded here over the years. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:32
Livestock auctions date back centuries | 0:28:36 | 0:28:39
and are still an essential part of the rural economy today. | 0:28:39 | 0:28:43
-Well, that's a magnificent pair of horns. Look at that. -Yeah... -Woo. | 0:28:43 | 0:28:48
However, there are other distractions | 0:28:48 | 0:28:50
to make it feel like more of a day out. | 0:28:50 | 0:28:53
-If you stand this side, you'll avoid the temptation. -OK. | 0:28:53 | 0:28:58
We are just looking around, seeing if we can find the sale ring. | 0:29:05 | 0:29:09
-See where we'll end up with the Dexters. -Yeah... | 0:29:09 | 0:29:12
I suppose if we go back through here... | 0:29:12 | 0:29:14
Finally, they find that all-important auction room. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:21
-All ready for the action. -Yeah. | 0:29:21 | 0:29:24
Is that good? Do you think they can get the cheque this far? | 0:29:26 | 0:29:30
But first on the agenda is the cattle competition, | 0:29:33 | 0:29:36
under Dexter expert Bernard Stamp's watchful eye. | 0:29:36 | 0:29:40
A lovely selection of Dexters here today. | 0:29:40 | 0:29:43
When I'm judging the Dexters, I'm looking for... | 0:29:43 | 0:29:46
my main thing is walking. | 0:29:46 | 0:29:48
Feet on the Dexters are very, very important. | 0:29:48 | 0:29:50
We know the judge that's judging today and he's someone | 0:29:51 | 0:29:54
who gives advice as well, so if we've got a good animal | 0:29:54 | 0:29:57
and he doesn't think so, he'll always tell us what's wrong with it | 0:29:57 | 0:29:59
or where we could go right or where we could go wrong. | 0:29:59 | 0:30:02
I do enjoy the judging side of it | 0:30:02 | 0:30:05
and I shall look forward to sorting them out | 0:30:05 | 0:30:07
and find out who's the best. I hope! | 0:30:07 | 0:30:10
A win could mean a higher price in today's auction. | 0:30:13 | 0:30:16
For Jeff and Bev, a rosette or two would mean even more. | 0:30:17 | 0:30:20
Because we don't show generally, or haven't done, | 0:30:22 | 0:30:25
we're not well known on the circuit, if you like, | 0:30:25 | 0:30:29
so we're not a name that people would automatically come to mind | 0:30:29 | 0:30:33
if people were looking to buy stock. | 0:30:33 | 0:30:35
So this could be the first step on that...on that ladder. | 0:30:35 | 0:30:40
Can I see him walk now? | 0:30:42 | 0:30:43
First up is Kim's bull. | 0:30:45 | 0:30:47
A good result here could mean his price rockets. | 0:30:47 | 0:30:50
OK, turn him round. | 0:30:50 | 0:30:52
OK. | 0:30:57 | 0:30:58 | |
Just wait and see now and see after he's judged the rest | 0:31:00 | 0:31:03
and see what happens. So... | 0:31:03 | 0:31:04
-Just got to wait for the handshake, hopefully. -Yep. | 0:31:04 | 0:31:08
For Jeff, what he's seen so far has got him worried. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:13
Just watching him now, I think we're going to struggle a little bit, | 0:31:14 | 0:31:17
because our cows aren't halter trained, | 0:31:17 | 0:31:21
so he'll have to judge them with them just running up and down, | 0:31:21 | 0:31:25
so he won't be able to feel them and what have you. | 0:31:25 | 0:31:28
So, that probably won't work out too well for us. | 0:31:28 | 0:31:31
Are you showing yours? | 0:31:32 | 0:31:34
-Yeah. -All heifers? | 0:31:34 | 0:31:36
Yeah. All youngsters. They're not halter trained or anything, though. | 0:31:36 | 0:31:39
-Oh, you haven't got them trained? -No. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:41
How can I judge them if they're not halter trained? | 0:31:41 | 0:31:44
A man of your experience! | 0:31:44 | 0:31:45
-Make them run up and down here, they'll be fine. -Yeah. | 0:31:47 | 0:31:51
All fingers crossed, as the untrained Dexters | 0:31:52 | 0:31:55
take to the catwalk. | 0:31:55 | 0:31:57
Keep going, keep going. Come on. | 0:31:57 | 0:31:59
Good girl, well done. | 0:31:59 | 0:32:00
Come on, then. Up, up, up. | 0:32:02 | 0:32:04
That's one done. | 0:32:06 | 0:32:07
Now for the next runner. | 0:32:07 | 0:32:09
Come on, then. | 0:32:15 | 0:32:16
Up, up, up! | 0:32:16 | 0:32:18
This one doesn't want to go back into her pen again. | 0:32:23 | 0:32:26
Jeff and Bev have a nervous wait | 0:32:30 | 0:32:32
until Bernard finishes judging their group. | 0:32:32 | 0:32:35
Kim's good news has arrived early. | 0:32:35 | 0:32:38
Her bull has taken first prize. | 0:32:38 | 0:32:40
Good result. | 0:32:42 | 0:32:44
Yep, so now he can go into the ring with his rosette | 0:32:44 | 0:32:47
and, hopefully, we'll get a good price for him. | 0:32:47 | 0:32:50
So... And if not, we know he's got potential, | 0:32:50 | 0:32:51
so we'll keep him on and sell him at another time. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:54
Win-win all round. | 0:32:54 | 0:32:55
Finally, Jeff and Bev can find out the results. | 0:32:55 | 0:32:59
Here comes the judge. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:00
-Well done. -Thank you very much. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:02
-Stand there, you've got some more to come yet. -Oh, how exciting. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:05
You've got second, third and fourth, so you've done very well. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:08
Oh, wow, that's fantastic. | 0:33:08 | 0:33:10
Despite no halter training, they've won their first rosettes ever, | 0:33:10 | 0:33:14
an excellent way to show their cows off to potential buyers. | 0:33:14 | 0:33:18
-Oh. -Not a bad result, then. -That's wonderful, isn't it? | 0:33:18 | 0:33:22
I thought one rosette would be wonderful. | 0:33:22 | 0:33:25
Well done, girls. | 0:33:25 | 0:33:27
There's a space here for number one, though, isn't there? | 0:33:27 | 0:33:29
Yes, next time, next time. | 0:33:29 | 0:33:32
Staring with quiet pride. | 0:33:32 | 0:33:34
I think this could be quite addictive, you know, Jeff. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:38
Aye, could well be. | 0:33:38 | 0:33:39
-You've got to be happy with that, haven't you? -Yeah, really happy. | 0:33:45 | 0:33:48
-You happy with the bull? -Happy with the bull, yes. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:50
Amongst the Dexters today, there are other rare breeds up for sale. | 0:33:56 | 0:34:00
Shetland sheep were also once put on the rare-breed list | 0:34:02 | 0:34:06
but now they're thriving. They even have their own farmers' society. | 0:34:06 | 0:34:11
On the mainland, there are probably about 6,500 to 7,000 sheep. | 0:34:11 | 0:34:15
On the islands, I really wouldn't like to guess | 0:34:15 | 0:34:18
but I'll bet there are about 200,000 sheep, if not more. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:22
Devil of a lot of sheep on the islands, I can tell you. | 0:34:22 | 0:34:25
Shetland sheep's wool does not have guard hairs, | 0:34:29 | 0:34:33
so you get less of that itchy feeling from your jumper. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
It's this unique characteristic that has driven a surge | 0:34:36 | 0:34:39
in the popularity of this sheep and helped the numbers to grow. | 0:34:39 | 0:34:43
Shetland wool is the finest wool | 0:34:43 | 0:34:46
that you will find on any breed of sheep, | 0:34:46 | 0:34:49
possibly apart from merino, | 0:34:49 | 0:34:50
who could possibly compete with it, | 0:34:50 | 0:34:53
but Shetland has the advantage | 0:34:53 | 0:34:55
that it's got 10 or 11 natural colours. | 0:34:55 | 0:34:58
It's the ongoing commitment of these devoted farmers | 0:34:59 | 0:35:02
and auction houses like Sedgemoor | 0:35:02 | 0:35:04
that keep these rare breeds going. | 0:35:04 | 0:35:07
BELL RINGS | 0:35:13 | 0:35:16
The bell signals the start of the sale. | 0:35:16 | 0:35:19
As with all livestock auctions, | 0:35:20 | 0:35:22
the prices today will be in old-fashioned money. | 0:35:22 | 0:35:26
When you buy pedigree animals, you pay in guineas. | 0:35:26 | 0:35:30
And a guinea is £1 and 5p. | 0:35:30 | 0:35:32
And the 5p goes to the auctioneer and the pound goes to the seller. | 0:35:32 | 0:35:35
It is an historical thing that's happened for ever | 0:35:35 | 0:35:37
and it's nice to keep those traditions going. | 0:35:37 | 0:35:39
I'm feeling almost calm. | 0:35:41 | 0:35:44
It is a bit nervous, I suppose, just not knowing what's going to happen, | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
but it will be interesting to see. | 0:35:49 | 0:35:52
Yes, there's quite a bit of excitement about it, I think. | 0:35:53 | 0:35:56
We really don't what to expect. | 0:35:56 | 0:35:59
Auctioneer Robert Venner is taking today's sale | 0:35:59 | 0:36:02
and at an average of 200 lots an hour, | 0:36:02 | 0:36:05
things could get off to a speedy start. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:08
An auction is very, very simple. | 0:36:08 | 0:36:10
Somebody offers an animal, | 0:36:10 | 0:36:12
somebody wants to buy it, | 0:36:12 | 0:36:14
the auctioneer offers that animal, | 0:36:14 | 0:36:17
the buyer indicates that they want to buy through bidding, | 0:36:17 | 0:36:21
and that can be a wink or it can be a flick of the thumb | 0:36:21 | 0:36:25
or just a glance even, and keep going, keep going | 0:36:25 | 0:36:27
until everyone's stopped bidding | 0:36:27 | 0:36:29
and then you seal the contract by knocking your gavel down. | 0:36:29 | 0:36:33
So, at the point of sale, when that gavel goes down, | 0:36:33 | 0:36:37
that's sealing the contract. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:39
Right, then, welcome to Sedgemoor. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:44
If you haven't been with us before, | 0:36:44 | 0:36:47
we are, of course, today, selling in guineas. | 0:36:47 | 0:36:50
First up are Kim's three heifers. | 0:36:50 | 0:36:53
This is Kim's Malibu. | 0:36:53 | 0:36:56
A pretty heifer, what a lovely deep colour about her. | 0:36:56 | 0:36:59
She's hoping to get a minimum of 250 guineas for each. | 0:36:59 | 0:37:02
Straight in there, a couple of hundred. | 0:37:02 | 0:37:04
200. 20. 220. | 0:37:04 | 0:37:07
40. 60. 80. | 0:37:07 | 0:37:09
300. 300. | 0:37:09 | 0:37:10
10, I will. 310. | 0:37:10 | 0:37:12
310. You've got to do it again. | 0:37:12 | 0:37:14
At 20. 320. | 0:37:14 | 0:37:16
30. 330. 330. 340. | 0:37:16 | 0:37:19
At 340, bid seated. | 0:37:19 | 0:37:21
At 340, 340, 340. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:24
340. | 0:37:24 | 0:37:25 | |
340, seated. | 0:37:25 | 0:37:28
340 guineas is an excellent result for Kim, | 0:37:29 | 0:37:33
above what she was hoping for. | 0:37:33 | 0:37:35
At 200, 200, 10. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:38
210, 20, 220, 30, 230. | 0:37:38 | 0:37:41
A second heifer is struggling to make the 250 reserve price. | 0:37:41 | 0:37:45
230, 230, 230. | 0:37:45 | 0:37:47
40. 240. 240. 240. | 0:37:47 | 0:37:51
Can I sell it? 240, out wide. | 0:37:51 | 0:37:54
-240. -Needing to make an instant decision, Kim lets her go for 240. | 0:37:54 | 0:37:59
At 260, 70, 80, | 0:37:59 | 0:38:01
280, 90, 290. | 0:38:01 | 0:38:03
But the last one is doing better. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:05
310, 320, fresh blood. | 0:38:05 | 0:38:08
30. You're back in. | 0:38:08 | 0:38:09
At 330. 330, 330. | 0:38:09 | 0:38:12
That was Gillard, thank you very much. | 0:38:12 | 0:38:16
That's all three of Kim's heifers sold, | 0:38:16 | 0:38:19
making an impressive total of 955 guineas. | 0:38:19 | 0:38:23
We like the look of them. The blacks are more common, aren't they, | 0:38:24 | 0:38:27
than the reds and the duns? | 0:38:27 | 0:38:30
So, we wanted to increase our reds and dun numbers. | 0:38:30 | 0:38:33
But it was their age, as well, obviously. | 0:38:33 | 0:38:35
Their age and their colour, and just what we're looking for. | 0:38:35 | 0:38:38
We got a good price for the heifers at the sale. | 0:38:39 | 0:38:42
We spoke with the people that have bought a couple of them | 0:38:42 | 0:38:44
and I'm really happy they've gone there. | 0:38:44 | 0:38:47
Right in there, a couple of hundred. A couple of hundred, who can? | 0:38:48 | 0:38:51
100, where? Surely? | 0:38:51 | 0:38:52
100 I've got, 100. 10. | 0:38:52 | 0:38:54
Jeff and Bev's five young heifers are up next. | 0:38:54 | 0:38:58
170. 80, 180. | 0:38:58 | 0:39:00
With no reserves on price, they are counting on them all selling. | 0:39:00 | 0:39:04
220. Lady's bid. | 0:39:04 | 0:39:06
220. | 0:39:06 | 0:39:07 | |
Buyers will be keeping an eye on a variety of characteristics | 0:39:12 | 0:39:15
that will affect their bid... | 0:39:15 | 0:39:17
..140, 150. | 0:39:17 | 0:39:20
..such as size, age, gender and bloodline. | 0:39:20 | 0:39:24
140, 60. | 0:39:24 | 0:39:26
Tick all the boxes, and you can expect a good price. | 0:39:26 | 0:39:29
At 200, 200. 200. | 0:39:29 | 0:39:32
Jeff and Bev's five heifers have reached a total of 1,000 guineas. | 0:39:32 | 0:39:37
So, we've finished. | 0:39:37 | 0:39:39
All ours have sold. Excellent. | 0:39:39 | 0:39:42
Yeah, good results, and we're not taking any home. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:44
Now it's Kim's last sale for today, her prize bull, | 0:39:48 | 0:39:52
and she's hoping for a good price. | 0:39:52 | 0:39:54
Good boy. To make sure everyone sees him at his best, | 0:39:55 | 0:39:58
she's taking the lead, | 0:39:58 | 0:40:01
and she will not accept under 600 guineas him. | 0:40:01 | 0:40:04
220, 50, 250, 80, 300. | 0:40:04 | 0:40:06
320, 50, 350, 80. 380, 400. | 0:40:06 | 0:40:09
At 400, 20. | 0:40:09 | 0:40:10
420, 50, 450, 80, 480. At 480? 500, thank you. 500. | 0:40:10 | 0:40:15
At 500, 20, 520, 40, 540. | 0:40:15 | 0:40:18
60, 560, 80, 580. | 0:40:18 | 0:40:21
At 580, 580, 580. | 0:40:21 | 0:40:25
At 580, 580, 580, 580, 580, 580, 580, 580, 580? | 0:40:25 | 0:40:30
All done at 580? I'm sorry, we weren't quite there. | 0:40:30 | 0:40:33
The bull hasn't quite met its reserve price, | 0:40:33 | 0:40:37
so he will be going back to the farm with Kim. | 0:40:37 | 0:40:39
The bull behaved well, even though he didn't sell. | 0:40:41 | 0:40:44
There's obviously interest in him. | 0:40:44 | 0:40:45
We know we're in the right kind of figure we want for him. | 0:40:45 | 0:40:49
Another 20 quid and he'd have gone, wouldn't he? | 0:40:49 | 0:40:51
But... If you don't have a figure to stick to... | 0:40:51 | 0:40:54
It's the same when you're buying. | 0:40:54 | 0:40:56
There's no point in underselling, there's no point in overbuying. | 0:40:56 | 0:40:59
To see her hold her own in this environment is something special. | 0:41:02 | 0:41:05
The cattle auction has finished and our farming families | 0:41:07 | 0:41:10
can be pleased they are going home with lighter trailers. | 0:41:10 | 0:41:13
It went really well. | 0:41:13 | 0:41:15
Everything sold, the prices were reasonable. | 0:41:15 | 0:41:18
Yeah, it was great. It was very quick. | 0:41:18 | 0:41:20
I feel great. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:23
I can't wait to come and do another one now. | 0:41:25 | 0:41:27
Better get some cows breeding, hadn't we? | 0:41:27 | 0:41:30
The Sedgemoor Livestock Auction has come to an end for another day. | 0:41:32 | 0:41:36
Most of the special and rare-breed animals have found new homes. | 0:41:36 | 0:41:41
It's been a challenging year. | 0:41:50 | 0:41:52
Both of our families have come along leaps and bounds | 0:41:52 | 0:41:55
in the short time they've been farming. | 0:41:55 | 0:41:58
For Jeff and Bev, their first auction has been a success, | 0:41:58 | 0:42:03
and perhaps the start of a new way to bring in an income. | 0:42:03 | 0:42:07
My first experience of Sedgemoor has been really good, to be honest. | 0:42:07 | 0:42:11
We've sold everything, it was easy, | 0:42:11 | 0:42:14
the prices weren't too bad and we're going home with an empty truck, | 0:42:14 | 0:42:19
so, yeah, a good day. | 0:42:19 | 0:42:20
I think this is really quite a major step forward for us. | 0:42:20 | 0:42:23
It's something we've never done before. | 0:42:23 | 0:42:26
I'll definitely be back. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:28
And maybe with some pigs or something else, as well. | 0:42:28 | 0:42:30
When we looked around, we were thinking, | 0:42:30 | 0:42:32
"Well, some of our animals would do really well here." | 0:42:32 | 0:42:35
They're good quality stock, so, yes, we'll be back. | 0:42:35 | 0:42:38
