For thousands of years, farming has shaped the landscape of Wales.

0:00:020:00:07

Hey, come on!

0:00:070:00:09

HE WHISTLES

0:00:090:00:12

Generations of farmers have worked the land and in Snowdonia,

0:00:120:00:16

one family has been farming

0:00:160:00:18

the slopes of the Carneddau Mountains for centuries.

0:00:180:00:21

Meet the Joneses.

0:00:220:00:24

For 350 years my family can say that we have farmed this valley.

0:00:240:00:31

Gareth Wyn Jones is the latest in a long line of hill farmers

0:00:310:00:34

to rear sheep on the mountains near Llanfairfechan on north Wales coast.

0:00:340:00:39

But the way we buy our food has changed.

0:00:400:00:43

Lots of people have lost contact with the land,

0:00:430:00:47

with agriculture, with farmers.

0:00:470:00:49

Gareth's wife Rhian takes care of the family,

0:00:500:00:53

their home and the garden.

0:00:530:00:55

Picking peas.

0:00:550:00:58

Ah, there is nothing better than

0:00:580:01:00

eating peas fresh from the pod.

0:01:000:01:03

Their sons - Rolant and his elder brother Sior -

0:01:030:01:07

are following in their father's footsteps.

0:01:070:01:10

Steady, steady. Hey, stand!

0:01:100:01:12

These sheep get on my nerves.

0:01:120:01:14

And their daughter Mari isn't far behind.

0:01:140:01:17

Sit! Elin, sit!

0:01:170:01:19

Elin, paid!

0:01:190:01:21

Their grandparents also live on the farm -

0:01:210:01:24

Gareth's mother Eryl and his father Roland Senior.

0:01:240:01:28

We will follow Gareth and his family through

0:01:350:01:37

the course of a year as they take their animals from the mountainside

0:01:370:01:41

to the marketplace.

0:01:410:01:44

That's it. That's the end product.

0:01:440:01:46

After all that hard work, this is what we sell.

0:01:460:01:49

But with bad weather and rising costs,

0:01:510:01:53

what does the future hold for the traditional Welsh hill farm?

0:01:530:01:57

Physically, mentally, emotionally it's tough,

0:01:570:02:01

but the truth is, if you are born and bred into it,

0:02:010:02:04

you know nothing better.

0:02:040:02:06

That's the way it is. That's the way the mountain is.

0:02:060:02:09

It's the height of summer,

0:02:190:02:21

and one of the hottest and driest in nearly a decade.

0:02:210:02:26

Here, here, here. Come, come.

0:02:260:02:28

With the sheep free to graze on the lush pastures

0:02:400:02:44

of the Carneddau, it is a quieter time on the farm.

0:02:440:02:47

The days are long, the sun is out

0:02:520:02:55

and the kids are home for the holidays.

0:02:550:02:58

It is a time for the family to take stock and spend time together.

0:03:010:03:05

But for Sior, the family's eldest,

0:03:050:03:09

this summer will be a test of both his farming and academic skills.

0:03:090:03:13

Today though, Gareth and the kids are taking a break

0:03:160:03:19

from the day-to-day chores and going shopping.

0:03:190:03:22

We've just come up to Jo's place now

0:03:240:03:27

and we're going to catch a few piglets, hopefully.

0:03:270:03:32

They're going to have one each.

0:03:320:03:35

So we're going to fatten them up for Christmas.

0:03:350:03:38

These pigs are a cross breed -

0:03:380:03:39

half Welsh, known for their good meat qualities,

0:03:390:03:42

and half New Zealand kunekune,

0:03:420:03:45

a small, placid breed sometimes kept as pets.

0:03:450:03:47

PIG SQUEALS

0:03:590:04:01

He's fat and he's chubby and he is...cool.

0:04:040:04:07

Eugh! He pooed on me!

0:04:110:04:14

And he pooed on my shoes now!

0:04:140:04:16

THEY LAUGH

0:04:160:04:18

Having each chosen a piglet, it's time for money to change hands.

0:04:280:04:33

-Fantastic.

-Great.

0:04:340:04:38

Deal or no deal?

0:04:380:04:40

-Deal!

-PIG SQUEALS

0:04:400:04:43

It's luck money.

0:04:590:05:01

With the piglets safely stowed, it's back to the farm.

0:05:160:05:20

Getting them in the car was one thing,

0:05:200:05:22

getting them into the shed is another.

0:05:220:05:25

Oh, come on!

0:05:250:05:27

PIG SQUEALS

0:05:340:05:36

The piglets will be fattened up over the coming months

0:05:480:05:51

until they are ready for the family freezer.

0:05:510:05:53

It's a big day at Tyn Llwyfan.

0:06:050:06:07

Every summer the farm hosts a sheepdog trial

0:06:100:06:13

that attracts competitors from across Wales.

0:06:130:06:16

And this year Sior is planning to compete.

0:06:170:06:20

Steady on, steady on. Stand!

0:06:200:06:23

Hey, hey.

0:06:230:06:25

He and his dog Bill have been training together since the spring.

0:06:250:06:29

But they have only trialled together once before and it didn't go well.

0:06:290:06:34

They are hoping that a home advantage

0:06:340:06:37

might bring them good luck.

0:06:370:06:38

Don't get excited. Doesn't matter who is there.

0:06:380:06:41

Does it bother you when you see a lot of people watching you?

0:06:410:06:44

Yeah. Does the dog get a bit...

0:06:470:06:49

So, it's in the dog a bit, is it? Yeah.

0:06:490:06:53

So you will be having a bit of a problem there then.

0:06:530:06:56

-But you'll have a go, though.

-Will I?

0:06:560:06:58

-HE LAUGHS

-You'll have a go.

0:06:580:07:01

He was excited last night.

0:07:020:07:04

I haven't seen him that excited for ages.

0:07:040:07:06

He is still hasn't quite got the gist yet,

0:07:060:07:10

but I think he will, he will. He is keen, you know.

0:07:100:07:15

I think that little Bill is going to be a good dog in the years to come.

0:07:150:07:19

So, hopefully, I'd really like to see him do a good run.

0:07:190:07:23

As the crowds begin to arrive, the competitors take to the field.

0:07:300:07:34

The first command they give is either a "come-by" to send

0:07:380:07:41

the dog left, or "away" to send the dog to the right.

0:07:410:07:44

Each shepherd must use their dog to guide the sheep

0:07:470:07:50

through the gates, around their post and finally through the lane.

0:07:500:07:54

They will be competing against the clock

0:07:590:08:02

and marked closely on their skills.

0:08:020:08:04

Some struggle to complete the course, others make it look easy.

0:08:070:08:13

Now it's time for Sior and Bill to show what they are made of.

0:08:140:08:18

Skill with a dog is vital for a successful hill famer.

0:08:190:08:23

Now, the months of training with his grandfather will be put to the test.

0:08:230:08:27

I think he is a bit nervous. Yes, a little bit.

0:08:270:08:30

He has gone very quiet, look.

0:08:300:08:33

I'm not sure which way I'm going to give him...

0:08:350:08:38

You know, which way, the come-by or away. I'm not sure.

0:08:380:08:42

He has asked me to explain exactly...

0:09:150:09:18

He is asking the judges what to do now.

0:09:180:09:21

-HE LAUGHS

-Oh, God.

0:09:210:09:24

Away. Away.

0:09:270:09:29

Away!

0:09:300:09:32

They get off to a bad start.

0:09:320:09:35

Bill has failed to spot the sheep at the far end of the field.

0:09:350:09:39

Away!

0:09:390:09:40

He still hasn't seen them.

0:09:420:09:44

He's going to have a problem with them now.

0:09:440:09:46

Stand, away!

0:09:500:09:52

He's all right now, hopefully. He's all right now.

0:09:540:09:58

Finally, Bill picks up the sheep

0:09:580:10:00

and it looks like Sior has him under control, for now at least.

0:10:000:10:06

Oh, I hope he does it, I hope he does it.

0:10:060:10:08

Away! Stand!

0:10:100:10:12

Come by!

0:10:130:10:15

Come by, come by. He's a bit late there again.

0:10:150:10:17

It's not going well.

0:10:170:10:19

They fail to negotiate the first gate.

0:10:190:10:22

Sior must now guide them towards his post.

0:10:220:10:25

Bloody hell... I've got to watch what I'm saying on the camera.

0:10:250:10:28

He's not controlling like I would like him to.

0:10:280:10:32

I'll have to give him more lessons.

0:10:320:10:35

-Stand.

-Come by, come by, steady.

0:10:350:10:38

-Stand.

-Away.

-Away.

0:10:400:10:43

Away. Come by!

0:10:430:10:45

Eventually, Sior makes it around the post.

0:10:450:10:48

That's nice, that is. He's going up very well now.

0:10:480:10:51

But then he loses control of Bill on the other gates.

0:10:520:10:56

-Away.

-Come by! Oh, bloody hell.

0:10:560:10:59

Stand! Stand!

0:11:000:11:03

Come by. Stand.

0:11:030:11:05

He's done very well, actually, yeah.

0:11:050:11:07

Got a big...aah!

0:11:070:11:09

Speaking too soon again. Way back.

0:11:090:11:12

And before he can steer the sheep through the lane to the finish,

0:11:150:11:18

his time is up.

0:11:180:11:20

He is unlikely to have impressed the judges,

0:11:200:11:23

but his mentors think he has done well for a beginner.

0:11:230:11:26

-I was quite pleased, don't know about you.

-Very frustrated.

0:11:310:11:34

Well, yeah, tell you one thing you will have to teach him,

0:11:340:11:37

that he is too cool. He's got to move himself.

0:11:370:11:40

I think he's been listening to you too much.

0:11:400:11:42

No, he hasn't! He's not listening, that's the trouble.

0:11:420:11:44

He's been listening to him too much.

0:11:440:11:46

He could never handle a dog either! THEY LAUGH

0:11:460:11:49

I've won more times than you!

0:11:490:11:51

-You haven't!

-I have!

0:11:510:11:54

Sior, though, is disappointed.

0:11:540:11:58

Terrible. Absolutely terrible.

0:11:580:12:01

Rubbish. Rubbish.

0:12:090:12:11

Good job, but it's frustrating, isn't it?

0:12:130:12:15

It's more frustrating for me to watch

0:12:150:12:17

than to be running, I tell you.

0:12:170:12:19

The dog sometimes just is not picking his sheep up, is he?

0:12:190:12:23

And you're not quite stopping him where you should be,

0:12:230:12:27

but that will come.

0:12:270:12:29

That will come in time. You learn by your mistakes.

0:12:290:12:32

High above the farm, on the slopes of the Carneddau,

0:12:390:12:42

the flock has been grazing for several months.

0:12:420:12:45

They have been fattening up since the spring

0:12:480:12:51

and soon they will be ready to be sold.

0:12:510:12:53

So, the time has come to bring them down off the mountain.

0:12:560:12:59

The ewe lambs will be kept for breeding

0:13:040:13:06

and the ram lambs will be sent for slaughter.

0:13:060:13:10

First they need to be separated

0:13:100:13:12

and turned out onto richer pastures to put on more weight.

0:13:120:13:15

Taking the ram lambs out now, ready to be fattened,

0:13:150:13:20

sent off to Anglesey.

0:13:200:13:22

Dad, there is one going backwards!

0:13:220:13:25

Soon the kids will be going back to school, but

0:13:320:13:34

while they are still around, Gareth can always find them work to do.

0:13:340:13:39

This is a chance for them to learn what I was taught, exactly the same.

0:13:390:13:43

You know, they're home every day,

0:13:430:13:45

they don't sit in front of the television playing Xboxes.

0:13:450:13:48

They're out here with us,

0:13:480:13:50

giving us a hand every minute they can.

0:13:500:13:52

Sometimes they can get under your feet.

0:13:520:13:54

Mari can be bit of a pain,

0:13:540:13:56

because she wants to do the things the boys can do, but she can't.

0:13:560:13:59

She thinks she can.

0:13:590:14:01

But she's quite good, really, to be honest. Good girl.

0:14:010:14:05

Mari is very busy.

0:14:050:14:06

I don't search for anything for them to do, to be honest.

0:14:060:14:09

Come on, move.

0:14:090:14:11

As well as their land around Llanfairfechan,

0:14:110:14:14

the family also leases land on nearby Anglesey.

0:14:140:14:17

The lower elevation and milder climate

0:14:180:14:20

provide the perfect grazing to fatten the lambs

0:14:200:14:23

and in a few months they will be ready for the abattoir.

0:14:230:14:28

That's the second batch that we have sent over to Anglesey.

0:14:280:14:31

Next time we put our hands on them, hopefully,

0:14:310:14:33

they will be fat and ready for market.

0:14:330:14:36

And that's where the money comes into it.

0:14:360:14:39

Two, three weeks, maybe four, and we should start picking them.

0:14:390:14:43

They are like peas, when they are ready and the price is right,

0:14:430:14:47

they've got to go.

0:14:470:14:49

The lambs are not the only crop nearly ready to be harvested.

0:14:530:14:58

For months, Rhian has been hard at work in the family's

0:14:580:15:01

vegetable plot and now the fruits of her labour are ready to be reaped.

0:15:010:15:05

This summer has been idyllic. It's been ideal.

0:15:050:15:08

The weather has been very warm.

0:15:080:15:10

June and July, we just couldn't complain at all.

0:15:100:15:14

And, you know, having had some sun on your back,

0:15:140:15:17

you are ready for winter, you know.

0:15:170:15:19

You are ready for those closed in nights, you know.

0:15:190:15:22

July in Welsh is Gorffennaf - "gorffen haf" - "end of summer".

0:15:240:15:29

So this is the end of harvest, really.

0:15:300:15:32

With the peas we've had the best of them.

0:15:320:15:35

The weather is changing. This month is different to last month.

0:15:370:15:41

Fantastic, Mari. Watch the plants you're standing on, cariad.

0:15:410:15:45

I do see a difference now in this month. I always do.

0:15:460:15:49

And I'm always a bit sad that it's almost the end of summer.

0:15:490:15:53

The days are getting shorter now as well, you know.

0:15:530:15:56

You get to sort of...

0:15:560:15:58

You instinctively know that this is maybe our last month of summer.

0:15:590:16:04

The beginning of autumn is just almost upon us.

0:16:050:16:10

It has been a busy year for the Joneses

0:16:110:16:14

and an important one for Sior.

0:16:140:16:16

He has been helping out on the farm more than ever,

0:16:180:16:22

but he's also been busy at school and today is the big day.

0:16:220:16:28

A few months ago Sior sat his first set of GCSE exams

0:16:300:16:36

and as the summer holidays draw to an end

0:16:360:16:39

it is time to collect his results.

0:16:390:16:41

I've had the three As that I hoped for and then I had two Es.

0:16:540:17:01

That's not very good. That was the English literature.

0:17:010:17:06

I knew I didn't do well on that.

0:17:060:17:09

And then I did geography, had an E in that as well.

0:17:090:17:12

So, that's not good either.

0:17:120:17:15

I think I have to talk to my mum. It's not going to be good.

0:17:160:17:20

Doesn't matter, Sior.

0:17:200:17:22

-You were saying about your English, weren't you?

-I did, I knew.

0:17:220:17:26

In daearyddiaeth, I was hoping for a C.

0:17:260:17:30

But I don't know.

0:17:300:17:32

Sior will have to resit the exams he failed next year.

0:17:320:17:35

But what will his father make of his results?

0:17:350:17:37

-A, A, A.

-Da, Sior.

0:17:490:17:51

-E.

-Eh?

0:17:510:17:54

Good lad! HE LAUGHS

0:18:100:18:14

It's a lot better than I expected.

0:18:210:18:23

I thought they would be similar to my results

0:18:240:18:27

when I brought them home, but no.

0:18:270:18:30

I'm very proud, to be honest with you. Very nice surprise.

0:18:300:18:33

The truth was, education was not that important as a farmer,

0:18:340:18:38

but today it's more important than the farming side of it.

0:18:380:18:42

The harder he works at school,

0:18:460:18:49

the better he will be able to run his business at whatever he does.

0:18:490:18:52

Yeah, that's why I'm pretty proud. Fair play.

0:18:540:18:57

Come on! Come on.

0:18:570:18:59

The summer holidays are over. It's time to go back to school.

0:19:290:19:33

Reading the paper.

0:19:420:19:45

Go boys, go, go, go, go!

0:19:510:19:53

-Ta-ta, Dad.

-Ta-ta, boy. See you tonight.

0:19:560:20:00

Now, Gareth must start to think about the months ahead,

0:20:020:20:05

and next year's stock.

0:20:050:20:07

The farm has over 3,500 breeding ewes

0:20:110:20:14

and these will give birth to the next generation of lambs.

0:20:140:20:19

But first they need to mate with a ram.

0:20:190:20:22

To prevent inbreeding and maintain a healthy flock,

0:20:250:20:28

new rams need to be bought in every year.

0:20:280:20:31

But this is also a chance for the Joneses to sell on

0:20:330:20:36

their top rams to other farms.

0:20:360:20:38

This is what you call a real Welsh mountain ram lamb.

0:20:450:20:51

You don't get many in this confirmation.

0:20:510:20:54

He's got a good, sturdy back, straight.

0:20:540:20:58

A good back on him, and better than anything,

0:20:580:21:02

you've got the wool here that will hold the rain.

0:21:020:21:05

It isn't open, see.

0:21:050:21:07

It's very tight and that will hold the weather

0:21:070:21:11

when you get that heavy rain.

0:21:110:21:13

All in all, hopefully he'll sell well.

0:21:140:21:18

That's the best coat you can get.

0:21:180:21:20

What's the most important thing we've got is the mouth.

0:21:250:21:29

That mouth needs to be bang on flush.

0:21:310:21:34

An uneven mouth will be poor for grazing,

0:21:360:21:39

and with their genes passed on to countless lambs

0:21:390:21:42

this is a crucial characteristic for any breeding ram.

0:21:420:21:45

That's perfect.

0:21:450:21:48

Gareth, his father and his uncle Teg

0:21:480:21:51

will hope for a good price at the sale,

0:21:510:21:53

but it isn't all about the money,

0:21:530:21:56

there is also a prize for the top specimen.

0:21:560:22:00

We've had quite a few wins with our lambs and the two-year-olds,

0:22:000:22:03

but let's see this year.

0:22:030:22:06

We've got two good ones. Let's see.

0:22:060:22:08

Hopefully this is the one that brings the silverware home with us.

0:22:100:22:14

With their best rams ready for the market,

0:22:220:22:24

they are loaded up and on their way to Gaerwen on Anglesey.

0:22:240:22:28

HE WHISTLES

0:22:410:22:43

Farming can be a lonely life

0:22:440:22:46

and livestock sales like this are good places to socialise.

0:22:460:22:51

Farmers come to buy and sell, check out the competition

0:22:520:22:55

and catch up on the latest gossip.

0:22:550:22:57

Gareth is in the mood to buy.

0:23:030:23:05

What I'm looking for today is rams or ram lambs, you know, for breeding.

0:23:060:23:10

So, you are looking for something similar

0:23:100:23:13

for what we want on the mountain.

0:23:130:23:16

Good coats, good bone, good bodies, nice head, not too heavy horn.

0:23:170:23:22

A top breeding ram could cost tens of thousands,

0:23:220:23:25

but at small sales like this,

0:23:250:23:27

these Welsh mountain rams are more likely to go for several hundred.

0:23:270:23:31

But with around 20 bought in every year,

0:23:310:23:34

this is still a sizable investment for the farm.

0:23:340:23:37

We like to have one ram to every 50 ewes.

0:23:370:23:40

So, we need quite a lot of bloody rams,

0:23:400:23:42

and it can be an expensive job.

0:23:420:23:45

The top ram lambs will now be entered into a show

0:23:480:23:51

with a prize for the best individual.

0:23:510:23:53

The judge carefully examines each one.

0:23:550:23:58

Gareth's ram makes the cut.

0:24:080:24:10

It is down to the final three.

0:24:100:24:12

They've won!

0:24:160:24:18

This should lead to a better price for the farm's rams.

0:24:180:24:21

Same again price. 150, 150, 120, 120, 30...

0:24:230:24:28

With all the judging over, it is time for the business to begin.

0:24:280:24:32

I will take 60, selling away, 150 and sold!

0:24:320:24:36

Right, go on.

0:24:370:24:39

Roland is giving it the hard sell.

0:24:560:24:58

But the prices on the market are lower the usual this year

0:25:000:25:03

and he isn't happy with the bids.

0:25:030:25:05

Don't loose him.

0:25:150:25:16

Roland is disappointed with sales so far

0:25:210:25:24

but they've got still got more rams to come.

0:25:240:25:26

Reluctantly, Roland agrees to take a lower price and a deal is struck.

0:26:030:26:08

They manage to sell of all of their stock, including the prize ram.

0:26:080:26:13

They had been hoping for around £700 for the lot,

0:26:130:26:16

but have had settle for closer to five.

0:26:160:26:19

Disappointed a little bit with the prices.

0:26:190:26:21

I thought the best ram would have done a few more quid,

0:26:210:26:24

but that's the way of the market today. You never know.

0:26:240:26:29

They now need to start buying,

0:26:290:26:31

and it looks like something has already caught Roland's eye.

0:26:310:26:35

It looks like we might be buying.

0:26:350:26:37

The two of us are studying this big ram.

0:26:370:26:40

I really liked that in the show, to be honest with you.

0:26:400:26:43

But he might be expensive.

0:26:430:26:45

He might be out of our price range.

0:26:450:26:47

We don't like paying a lot for our rams.

0:26:470:26:49

As they take their place among the crowd,

0:26:510:26:53

the bidding is already under way.

0:26:530:26:55

With subtle nods and winks, business is done.

0:26:560:27:01

165.

0:27:010:27:02

We'll be bankrupt spending like this.

0:27:020:27:05

Bidding is fierce, everyone drives a hard bargain.

0:27:050:27:10

Roland has his eye on the next ram.

0:27:100:27:12

230, 230, 230.

0:27:130:27:17

230, 230, at 230, 230... I'm selling... 230, are you all set?

0:27:170:27:24

230!

0:27:240:27:25

GAVEL BANGS

0:27:250:27:27

230.

0:27:270:27:28

The price goes too high for Roland.

0:27:280:27:31

But they still get three good rams and at prices they are happy with.

0:27:310:27:36

These have cost £404.

0:27:360:27:38

One was £90, one was £165 and one was £130.

0:27:380:27:42

That...that's cheap. That's a really cheap ram.

0:27:420:27:46

We'll need about 13 or 14,

0:27:480:27:50

maybe a bit more in the next sale we go to.

0:27:500:27:53

From 50 to 70 ewes each and hopefully we'll have lambs for spring.

0:27:550:28:02

Still gives me a buzz to come here, win a couple of prizes

0:28:060:28:10

and go home with a couple of rams that we're...

0:28:100:28:13

we're pleased with.

0:28:130:28:15

Within a few months, these rams will be put to the ewes,

0:28:150:28:19

the yearly cycle of the hill farm will begin again

0:28:190:28:22

and the next generation of Welsh Mountain lambs will be on their way.
