Summer!

0:00:080:00:09

'What is normal?

0:00:100:00:12

'Not necessarily normal...' Come on!

0:00:130:00:16

..but we're all a bit special.

0:00:160:00:17

We're normal from the outside.

0:00:170:00:19

Come into the house and there's a horse on the sofa,

0:00:190:00:21

it's a bit different.

0:00:210:00:23

# I know I'd go from rags to riches

0:00:300:00:35

# If you would only say you care... #

0:00:370:00:40

The bet was I couldn't find a horse that was small enough

0:00:400:00:44

that I could keep, because we'd no stable.

0:00:440:00:46

We only have a small back garden -

0:00:460:00:47

horses are renowned for needing space.

0:00:470:00:50

So I went onto Google and Gumtree, and within two days I found Summer.

0:00:500:00:53

Little Falabella for sale.

0:00:530:00:55

I had this built as a shed.

0:00:550:00:58

It's like a wee workshop for me,

0:00:580:00:59

TV and radio and all that.

0:00:590:01:02

He clearly has given up his space which was the man cave.

0:01:020:01:06

It's now Summer's stable.

0:01:060:01:07

# Your love is all that ever mattered... #

0:01:090:01:12

It has to be the best sort of quality of care

0:01:120:01:15

you can give any animal.

0:01:150:01:17

This is the wee camera there.

0:01:170:01:19

This can be taken anywhere around the house.

0:01:190:01:21

She needs heat lamps in here when we're getting her ready,

0:01:210:01:25

so when you're taking her and grooming her, cleaning her,

0:01:250:01:28

she doesn't get too cold.

0:01:280:01:30

She's spoilt stupid.

0:01:300:01:31

She's a wee pet.

0:01:340:01:36

The first day home, she actually went into her new stable

0:01:360:01:39

and she put her head over the door

0:01:390:01:41

and Brad just dropped to his knees in front of her.

0:01:410:01:44

When I came home, she was, like, at the garden

0:01:440:01:46

and I was stroking her and all for a while.

0:01:460:01:49

It was really good.

0:01:490:01:51

Bradley has Asperger's syndrome and ADHD

0:01:510:01:54

and a thing called CIPD.

0:01:540:01:57

She'll lick him, she'll nuzzle him, she'll kiss him.

0:01:570:02:00

That is therapy for Brad. I think from then on in,

0:02:000:02:03

I knew there was something very, very special.

0:02:030:02:06

When I'm feeling, like, all bored, she just, like, calms you down.

0:02:060:02:11

I loved it.

0:02:110:02:13

We decided to branch out with Summer when we realised this was special.

0:02:130:02:18

She had something to give.

0:02:180:02:20

When I first saw Summer in the school, I was sitting in this chair,

0:02:240:02:27

my door was open and I remember glancing up

0:02:270:02:29

because I heard a bit of noise

0:02:290:02:31

and I happened to see a little horse coming in,

0:02:310:02:35

bright-pink coat on, fancy shoes, walking past my office

0:02:350:02:38

and I thought, "Why is there a horse in my school?"

0:02:380:02:42

Hello!

0:02:420:02:45

It's worth doing it for the smiles.

0:02:450:02:46

They squeal, they shout, they stamp their feet, they clap their hands.

0:02:460:02:51

Hi, guys!

0:02:510:02:52

CHILDREN SHOUT

0:02:520:02:54

Hi, everyone!

0:02:540:02:56

The difference in our children

0:02:560:02:57

because of Summer's visits is massive.

0:02:570:03:00

She's very much a part of the Killard House family

0:03:000:03:02

and a part of the education team.

0:03:020:03:04

Multisensory approaches work for our children

0:03:040:03:06

and she's part of that provision.

0:03:060:03:08

LAUGHTER

0:03:100:03:13

For some of the children who are maybe more non-verbal,

0:03:130:03:16

they don't have to talk. They don't have to try and communicate.

0:03:160:03:19

They can just be at one with her and zone everybody else out.

0:03:190:03:23

So we would then suggest that parents contact us.

0:03:230:03:26

We would either go to their house or they can come to us.

0:03:260:03:30

# If I were a carpenter

0:03:300:03:34

# And you were a lady

0:03:340:03:37

# Would you marry me anyway? #

0:03:370:03:39

Hello, Jamie!

0:03:390:03:42

Jamie has Bohring-Opitz syndrome.

0:03:420:03:45

It's a rare genetic disorder and, to date,

0:03:450:03:48

there are about 90-odd in the world.

0:03:480:03:51

He has epilepsy, scoliosis, he doesn't walk or talk,

0:03:510:03:56

he's tube-fed - a little bit of everything as we say.

0:03:560:03:59

But any encounters with Summer have always been amazing.

0:03:590:04:05

You know, he's content.

0:04:050:04:06

Others may not be able to tell, but we can tell and it's cool.

0:04:060:04:11

It's good. It's great.

0:04:110:04:12

Lying on Summer's back is so comfortable for Jamie

0:04:140:04:19

because he just moulds into the contours of her back

0:04:190:04:22

and the heat that generates from her body is so therapeutic for him

0:04:220:04:27

and so relieving of the pain that he must be in.

0:04:270:04:31

It's just something that I suppose we'll never understand,

0:04:310:04:34

but Jamie does.

0:04:340:04:35

'For us, it's the smiles. It's definitely the smiles.

0:04:370:04:41

'When we meet parents,'

0:04:410:04:42

it's really nice to know that she has made a difference

0:04:420:04:45

to their lives in that way that we can be classed as friends to them.

0:04:450:04:50

It is harder. You never get immune to meeting parents

0:04:590:05:03

of such children that are so special.

0:05:030:05:06

I've broken once.

0:05:060:05:08

(Sorry.)

0:05:110:05:13

'This is Jack's room.'

0:05:130:05:14

We've left it pretty much as it was,

0:05:140:05:18

only all the medical equipment's out.

0:05:180:05:21

We hadn't a clue there was anything wrong with him

0:05:210:05:23

when he was born. It wasn't until he was three months

0:05:230:05:27

and he started vomiting and he wouldn't stop.

0:05:270:05:30

So the neurologist came down, he said, "This isn't normal,"

0:05:300:05:33

had a look at him and they found out he had epilepsy.

0:05:330:05:37

This is it here.

0:05:390:05:42

Jack had just come into the hospice for end of life care.

0:05:420:05:46

Summer came in about one or two days after that.

0:05:460:05:50

Jack was so brain-damaged

0:05:500:05:53

and...really...at the point

0:05:530:05:57

where he was almost comatose.

0:05:570:06:00

In this picture you can see his eyes

0:06:000:06:03

are wide open, he's very alert.

0:06:030:06:06

He's holding Sam's hand and also his hand's on Summer.

0:06:060:06:11

Summer just kept her head very still and it's almost as if

0:06:110:06:15

she knew she had to be gentle

0:06:150:06:19

and just sit there and have that moment.

0:06:190:06:23

And that...

0:06:230:06:24

It's a strange moment to explain but one that means so much to us.

0:06:240:06:29

To say goodbye to him was the hardest thing I've ever done.

0:06:300:06:34

It really was the hardest.

0:06:340:06:36

Because you think, you're not going to see him again,

0:06:360:06:38

you're not going to hold his hand.

0:06:380:06:40

Sam is part of the horse, almost, you know.

0:06:400:06:43

We talk about Summer, but Samantha trained Summer

0:06:430:06:47

and made Summer what she is today

0:06:470:06:50

and you can see that Jack's just really relaxed there and happy.

0:06:500:06:55

That's the way we remember him, he's a happy baby. Yeah.

0:06:550:06:59

So it's a great memory to have.

0:07:000:07:02

Newcastle is, it's heaven on earth.

0:07:150:07:18

When we go up to the caravan, Summer has her own stable.

0:07:190:07:22

It's bliss.

0:07:220:07:24

I don't think I can put into words what she's done for us.

0:07:310:07:35

She's given us so much in such a short period of time.

0:07:350:07:38

She's worth a million of anything. Absolutely love her to bits.

0:07:390:07:43

Because I don't think you can get a horse as friendly

0:07:430:07:46

or has as much character as Summer.

0:07:460:07:49

And you meet so many people from it, you know,

0:07:490:07:51

from friends to children that you've maybe had to say goodbye to.

0:07:510:07:55

You still stay friends with their parents

0:07:550:07:57

which is something you don't...

0:07:570:07:59

you don't ever expect in that circumstance to have happen.

0:07:590:08:02

The future's cheeky and bright.

0:08:030:08:05

SHE LAUGHS

0:08:050:08:07

# Can't you see?

0:08:070:08:10

# Whoa, can't you see

0:08:100:08:12

# What that woman, Lord she been doin' to me?

0:08:120:08:19

# Can't you see?

0:08:190:08:20

# Can't you see

0:08:210:08:24

# What that woman, she been doin' to me?

0:08:240:08:28

# I'm gonna buy a ticket now... #
