Meet the Whewells. They're an average Welsh family, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
with two average Welsh teenagers, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
both with a growing Welsh problem - they're not too keen on exercise... | 0:00:06 | 0:00:12
I don't do anything sporty. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
..but they do like their food. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
I eat different kinds of junk food - | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
kebabs, burgers, chocolate. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
In fact, like many of us, they're a bit too fond of their food... | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
We eat way too much and I've done up from a size eight to ten, to 14. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:32
..which makes their story our story. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
Because Welsh youth is wrestling with a hefty problem. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:39
Wales has the largest number of overweight | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
under-18s in Western Europe. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
And just like the Whewell sisters, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
three-quarters of those affected are teenage girls. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
So, what's happening? And can anything be done about it? | 0:00:52 | 0:00:57
In a unique experiment, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:58
we are going to get the Whewell sisters to swap lives, lifestyles | 0:00:58 | 0:01:02
and diets with the Thompson sisters - | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
two super-fit, super-healthy teens | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
with very different ideas about the food you should eat. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
I couldn't eat takeaways every night. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
It'd be horrible. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
But can the Thompsons inspire the Whewells and us | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
to overcome our national battle with the bulge? | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
The village of Abersychan in the Afon Lloyd Valley, Gwent | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
is home to the Whewell family. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
Mum Helen and Dad Warren have been married for 13 years - | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
it is their second marriage. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
Between them, they have three dogs, two cars, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
one hot tub | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
and two teenage daughters worried about their weight. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
18-year-old Bonnie from Helen's first marriage | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
and 12-year-old Jenni, who is all their own work. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
The Whewells are a busy, bustling, close-knit family, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
whose love for each other is matched by only one thing - | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
their collective love of food. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
We're into food a lot. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
I like all different kinds of food, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
but mostly at the moment it's junk food. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
I enjoy cooking. You know, it's a real treat for me to cook. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
Yeah, she really likes cooking. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
On a normal day, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
if we're all together, we'd have a cooked breakfast. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
A full Welsh breakfast today. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
For lunch, she'd usually makes some sort of sandwich and chips, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:42
or some chicken and chips. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
Jenni, yours is ready! | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
I'm very guilty, actually. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
I'll cook a meal and if they won't eat it, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
I can't bear to think that they'll go hungry, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
so I'll cook them something else. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
There have been times where I've had all the kids home | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
and I've cooked six different meals. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
So, at the moment, Mum's into lamb shanks. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
Beef bourguignon or casserole or curry. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
Steaks and stuff like that, we do overload on that. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
Snacking is awful. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
Fizzy drinks, crisps, chocolate. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
We do have quite a lot of takeaways now. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
Burgers, kebabs, chicken nuggets... | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
With takeaways, I would say, on a very bad week, we might have three. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:26
Cos it's easy, isn't it? | 0:03:26 | 0:03:27
You know, it is very easy just to go out and get a takeaway. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
We have eaten like this for quite some time, I would say. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
But I think where we've gone wrong is that you're meant to eat | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
to live, but we now live to eat. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
Burgers? Onions? Onions? | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
But all of this fun with food has its dark side. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
Like 59% of Welsh adults, | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
the Whewell family now fall into the category of being | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
overweight, or obese, | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
and it's having a negative impact on all of them. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
For 12-year-old Jenni, | 0:04:03 | 0:04:04
peer pressure and social acceptance are already a worry. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
I am a bit more aware of my body weight since I've been 12, | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
because when you're in primary school you don't really care | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
what you look like. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:16
So, when you go up from primary school to high school, | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
you feel more self-conscious. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
Some people, you look at them and you want to be like them - | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
they're kind of your role model. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
And you think, "They're much prettier than you. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
"They're much slimmer than me." | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
It's a teenage world of perceived prejudice and harsh self-judgement | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
that 18-year-old Bonnie and her friends are acutely aware of. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
I think there's a lot of emphasis on weight now. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
At this age, people expect size ten, I suppose. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:51
Do you know what I mean? | 0:04:51 | 0:04:52
The thing is now, I kind of judge myself by other people. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
So, if I see a girl which I think is around my size, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
I'll say to myself, "Do I look that big?" | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
And then, yeah... | 0:05:00 | 0:05:01
I don't think they look as good as other people, | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
but that sounds really shallow. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
And whilst Bonnie and Jenni worry about how diet and lifestyle affect | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
their appearance, Helen and Warren fear the impact to their insides. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:17
Physically, I feel tired a lot of the time. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
I get worried about the processed meat and that sort of thing. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
I'm a bit paranoid about it because cancer was quite high | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
up in my family. And when you read all of the things, | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
especially about processed meat, that worries me more than anything. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
I've got a heart condition called supraventricular tachycardia | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
and I get quite significant heart arrhythmia, | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
and I then get chest pain and very, very chronic fatigue. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
It's a condition that can be treated, but my consultant is very | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
reluctant to do that unless I've lost a significant amount of weight. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:50
Hello, my darling. Mum, don't do that. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
We've decided to do this experiment | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
because things really do need to change, for all of us. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00
I'm not sure if we can do that gradually | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
without a very stark lesson being learnt, because I think we've got | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
in to that sort of mind set where food is central to everything. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
So, I think we really need to learn some new habits | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
and break the old ones. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
And who better to teach the Whewells some vigorous new habits than | 0:06:14 | 0:06:18
the ultra-fit... | 0:06:18 | 0:06:19
Ready, steady, go! | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
..ultra-competitive Thompson family? | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
Sports mad sisters Rosie, 15, | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
and Eva, 13, train and compete seven days a week. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:34
This is for gymnast of the year. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
This is for gymkhana. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
These are for athletics. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
That's my gymnastics trophy, when I was five. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
They're ice skating. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:47
They're my medals for gym - I have 40. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
And Mum and Dad are no sporting slouches either. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
I was the only one who brought home a medal from the Welsh Champs. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
In fact, the whole Thompson family, including the horses, | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
the chickens and the dog are exhausting just to watch. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:08
And juggling this high energy, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:11
time-intensive lifestyle requires planning and discipline. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
And so home life on a sprawling Cardiff estate is run like a | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
mini commando unit. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
Paramedic Dad Freddie is ex-military, | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
but it's Mum Sarah, a nurse, who's in charge of this particular unit. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
I don't want to call it a regime | 0:07:31 | 0:07:32
because that sounds too Hitler or Stalin. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
Does one of you want to go and sort the chickens out? | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
Cos...they're coming in the conservatory. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
The kids would call me controlling. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
They call me a control freak. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
Will you sort the chickens out, Eva? | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
I think you'll find that the kids would probably say, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
"Mum's a control freak." | 0:07:49 | 0:07:50
You must go and check the eggs after. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
She means well, but she's a control freak. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:57
It's a harsh description for someone who simply cares passionately | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
that her super-fit family are properly fuelled. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
I think that the diet is hugely important. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
You get out what you put in, basically, so if you don't have | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
good fuel inside you, then what do you expect to ask of your body? | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
My mum monitors every food we have. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
Everything has to be healthy with her. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
Carbohydrates, protein and fruit and vegetables. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:24
We've got a meal planner in the kitchen. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
We've got ideas for breakfast, lunch when they're in school, | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
they have a packed lunch, and dinner and ideas for snacks. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
They're organised then and they don't have to think, | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
because when they come home from school, | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
they don't seem to have that capacity to think. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
Can you come and get your lunch, please? | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
Everybody has the same. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
I'm not really making a fuss of their likes and their dislikes. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
They'll have it. If they don't want it, they can pick it out. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
I really do think it is a battle and I think if you, for a moment, | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
take your eye off the ball, that's it. | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
When I'm out with my friends and | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
I pick up something that's not healthy, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
I have my mum's voice at the back of my head, like, | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
"You shouldn't be doing that. You shouldn't eat that." | 0:09:07 | 0:09:10
And then I feel guilty and I'm like, "Oh, no, I can't do it." | 0:09:10 | 0:09:15
I think you can eat some rubbish with a good balanced diet | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
and it's all about balance. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
If I eat a piece of chocolate cake, I won't go and say, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
"That chocolate cake was really nice. Can I have six more pieces, please?" | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
Cos that would be... | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
That's greedy and that's sick. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
It's knowing what's right and what's wrong. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:34
I know what's good for me and what isn't. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
I am what I am and we are what we are. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
Did you know that if you talk for 52 minutes, | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
you burn 100 calories? | 0:09:42 | 0:09:43
The Thompsons and the Whewells - two extremely different families. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
One happy with their lifestyle and their diets. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:51
One who really wants to change. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
But can the Thompsons help the Whewells achieve those changes? | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
We're about to find out | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
because it's time to begin our unique experiment. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
For the next week, Bonnie and Jenni will swap homes, parents, | 0:10:05 | 0:10:09
lifestyles and diets with Rosie and Eva. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
Will the healthy habits of the goody two shoes Thompsons | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
rub off on the Whewells? | 0:10:16 | 0:10:18
Nice Thompson hoodie, which says, "British Finals." | 0:10:18 | 0:10:25
Or will the Whewells corrupt the Thompsons with a steady | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
stream of cakes, pies and takeaways? | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
And four poppadoms, please. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
We've no idea and neither have they. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
At this point, the girls don't even know where | 0:10:39 | 0:10:41
they are going, let alone who's shoes they'll be stepping into. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
So, we've asked both sets of sisters to make each other | 0:10:45 | 0:10:48
an introductory DVD. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:49
Hi, I'm Rosie. And I'm Eva. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
We lead quite busy lives. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
On a Monday, I do athletics training. I do long distance. | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
On Mondays, I do hurdles and pole vaults. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
On Tuesday, I do athletics training. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
Wednesday, I go for a long bike ride. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
Thursdays, I do gym... | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
and ice skate in the morning at seven. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
Hi, I'm Bonnie. I'm Jenni. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
We're the sisters you'll be swapping with. Welcome to our home. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
While you're here, I'm sure Mum will make you a loads of strange food, | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
which you've probably never tasted before. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
A lot of deserts, cakes cake pops, panna cotta... | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
We usually go to the kebab shop, chip shop, McDonald's. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:34
I reckon we eat too many takeaways. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
With Mum, we could impolitely describe her as control freak. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:43
My mum is very friendly. She's very happy. She's very soppy. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:46
To get around her, just make her feel guilty about something | 0:11:46 | 0:11:48
and she'll give in straight away. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:50
In this family, we compete with each other a lot. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:55
Good luck to you both. You'll have a pretty busy week. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
Ooh... Oh, no. This is going to be a nightmare! | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
It probably will be a dietary nightmare. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
I think we could come back and we could be the unhealthy ones. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:11
I've had a wakeup call already, really. Have you? Yeah. Right. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:16
We do nothing. They are just going to think we're slobs. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
ALL LAUGH | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
Oh, dear. Not quite the reactions we were hoping for. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
But there's no turning back now, | 0:12:26 | 0:12:27
and it's time to get this swap on the road. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
So, any final hopes and fears? | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33
I feel quite good. Excited. Nervous. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
Intrigued. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
Nervous about meeting the mum and dad, | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
about doing all the sporty activities. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
You're excited, aren't you? | 0:12:45 | 0:12:46
I just don't want to embarrass myself. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
I'm feeling really worried about what the family eat - | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
unhealthy food all of the time. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
In a week's time, I'd like to say that I know how to have a | 0:12:54 | 0:12:58
healthy diet, how to live a more active lifestyle, | 0:12:58 | 0:13:01
lose a bit of weight. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:02
Just feel good about myself in my own skin, I suppose. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:06
Don't cry. Don't kiss me cos you've got lipstick on. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:10
Basically, be more healthy, be more active, do more sports... | 0:13:10 | 0:13:16
No, Mum. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
..and to gain self-confidence. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
Well, it's clear what Bonnie and Jenni hope to gain from the swap. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
Right, party! | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
But how do Rosie and Eva feel about their challenge of getting | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
Helen and Warren to try a healthier lifestyle? | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
If, at the end of the week, they've changed then I think I'd be | 0:13:33 | 0:13:37
a bit flattered. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:38
I might be quite proud of myself and Eva for having an impact on them. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:45
There is one worrying fact that we've kept from the Thompson | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
family - that a young person is five times more likely to be | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
overweight if one of the adults they live with is also overweight. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:55
So, what happens if a week with the Whewells turns Eva | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
and Rosie into fast food junkies? | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
My worst fear for them would be burgers and chips, | 0:14:03 | 0:14:07
takeaway pizza every night, soft drinks, full fat coke. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:13
That would be my worst nightmare. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
Looking forward to trying Helen's cake. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
If they came home and told me that they wanted burgers | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
and chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it'd be a big fat no. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:27
That's not going to happen. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
We shall see. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:30
Hello. Hello. Welcome. Good trip up? Yeah. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:35
Nice to meet you. Come on in. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
Hello! Come on in. Nice to meet you. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:41
Nice to see you. Nice to see you. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
You're Jenni, are you? Yeah. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
First up, house rules. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:48
We have one rule in this house. If you want anything, | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
please don't wait to be asked, just go and get it when you want it, OK? | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
So, if there's anything you fancy, just raid the cupboards. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
Anything you fancy doing, whether it's cooking, going anywhere, | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
anything you want to eat, say. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
We haven't really got any other rules, have we? | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
Apart from make your bed. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
Have you got any questions? | 0:15:09 | 0:15:11
No, not really, not yet. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:14
So, are you hungry? Yeah. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
Do you want a snack? Yes, please. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:19
OK. What about some crisps? Yes, please. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
Lovely. I shall get you a bowl each now. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:24
Start as you mean to go on, so it's probably mung beans in Cardiff. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:29
From a dinners point of view as well, this is where my kids | 0:15:29 | 0:15:33
will have told you I'm a bit of a control freak. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
I tend not to pander to any specific needs unless it's an allergy. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:41
Girls, this is some of the meal planners. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
What do you think of the dinners? | 0:15:44 | 0:15:45
Yeah, I like all of that. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
You're the fussy eater, aren't you? | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
I think I might struggle cos I'm not a fan of fish. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:56
- Erm... - Do you wonder what that is? | 0:15:56 | 0:16:00
Yeah. It's where we have a takeaway. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
Dirty food. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:05
Street food. Dirty food. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:09
The kids have gone off having dirty food night. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
They prefer to have it homemade. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:14
My gosh. Homemade kebabs as well. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:16
- What sort of takeaways do you have? - Kebabs. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:20
Yeah, we have kebabs, Indian, Chinese, McDonald's, Domino's. KFC. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:26
You know that beef bourguignon you were looking forward to for lunch? | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
Well, it's probably more likely to be beans on toast. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
I'd rather that. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
So, with the ice broken, it's healthy beans | 0:16:39 | 0:16:42
for the new regime in Cardiff. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:44
Whilst in Abersychan, | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
the girls are limbering up for their lunch with baskets full of crisps. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:50
And guess what's on the menu for the main course? | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
We've got beef bourguignon. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:55
We've got some potatoes, which were picked off the patio this morning. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:59
We're going to have quite a simple lunch really, and then for dessert | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
we've got elderflower and Prosecco jelly with fruit set in to it. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:08
We don't want to fill them up too much cos we've got quite | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
a lot of food for tonight for the barbeque. | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
And because I know they like chocolate, | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
I've made them a chocolate torte. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
Food, glorious food. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
The crisps were a bit big. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:22
When they came out, I was like, "OK..." | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
There's lunch and then we've got dinner. Then we've got a barbeque. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:30
Oh dear. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:34
It's just so much. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:36
I'm quite full after the crisps. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
I'll try to eat as much as I can. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:41
We'll see how the first day goes, then we'll... | 0:17:41 | 0:17:43
Start the changes on the second day. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:48
They're really nice people. They're really nice. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
I don't know how I'm going to cope for the week. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
Here we go. Right, that one's yours. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
And I'll get yours now. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
Mad. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01 | |
It's a feast for Rosie and Eva, but is it famine for Bonnie and Jenni? | 0:18:02 | 0:18:08
We're making beans on toast with cheese, | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
but I've never tried beans on toast with cheese before. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
No way! | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
When I was a student, we used to do great things with a tin of beans. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:21
I think we'll be needing a lot of energy later today, | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
so we'll have a bit of protein and some energy-giving food. | 0:18:24 | 0:18:28
Wow! | 0:18:28 | 0:18:29 | |
It's adventurous really, isn't it? | 0:18:29 | 0:18:33
Something different. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
Beans on toast with onions in. I quite like it. It's a change... | 0:18:38 | 0:18:43
No butter on the toast. Don't need the butter on the toast. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
I don't like butter on toast that much anyway. Good. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:50
Adventurous? Maybe. Healthy? Definitely. And cheap. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:56
Helen's beef bourginion is not only five times the calorie | 0:18:56 | 0:19:00
count of those humble beans, but at £5 a head, it also costs five | 0:19:00 | 0:19:05
times as much, which may go some way to explain her weekly food bill. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:09
Our average is about £180 and that's what we try... | 0:19:11 | 0:19:16
On a week where we're not doing anything special, | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
but then we have a sort of entertainment budget, if you like. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
So, you could easily go another £100 over that | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
if you've got something going on, or you're having people around. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:30
We only spend about £20 a week on what we buy. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:35
Then, on one week, its £30 or £40 cos of the veg box. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
Yeah, cos we have a veg box delivered. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
That's once a fortnight. Yeah. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
I'm guessing you don't go hungry on that. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
You know, you've got plenty of food there. Wow. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
Just think what we could do if we only spent that much on food. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:54
I'm really really impressed by that. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:56
Perhaps we ought to try that. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
Right, scrub this then. Beans on toast all week? | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
That fortnightly veg box is key to the Thompson's pre-planned | 0:20:02 | 0:20:06
cheap and healthy diet, | 0:20:06 | 0:20:07
but it's certainly not the way to Jenni's heart, or stomach. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:11
Do you like stuffed mushrooms? No. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:16
No. Loads of courgettes. Do you like courgettes? Nope. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:21
We'll hide them for you. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:22
Do you like tomatoes? Nope. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
Do you like fruit? Pears? A Pear? No. No? Apples? Yeah. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:29
Bananas? Yeah. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:31
Peaches? I've never tried them. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:32
You haven't tried peaches. Strawberries? Nope. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:36
Olives? No. Couscous? | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
I like couscous. I've never tried it. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
I don't usually have vegetables at home - | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
it's usually chips. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
What do you have for breakfast normally? Nothing. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:54
But Mum started buying Pop Tarts | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
and we've started having them for breakfast, and that's not good. | 0:20:57 | 0:21:02
Why is that not good, Bonnie? | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
Chocolate for breakfast. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
So, we're just four hours into this seven-day experiment | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
and some pronounced local difficulties are already surfacing. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:14
Jenni's extreme fussy eating could seriously hamper any attempt | 0:21:14 | 0:21:18
to wean her off kebabs, Pop Tarts and chips. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:21
And things are no better in Abersychan, | 0:21:23 | 0:21:26
where far from encouraging Helen | 0:21:26 | 0:21:27
to follow her dreams of a healthier diet and £20 a week food bills, | 0:21:27 | 0:21:32
Eva and Rosie appear to have gone native. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
We haven't been that active today and it's made me | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
more tired than I normally would be after doing exercise. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:42
I think I might feel really tired, not being active. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
It's kind of draining, being inside all day. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:50
You're a bit like... | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
I can't be bothered. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:55
Well, there's been a modicum of outdoor activity - | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
a trip to the local butchers to get meat for the barbeque. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:02
I'll have 20 burgers, | 0:22:02 | 0:22:05
ten plain sausages and ten dragon sausages, please. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:09
Do you like...? | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
I guess the barbecue will be fun. Oh, that's perfect. Thank you. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
There won't be a shortage of food. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:18
I'm looking forward to trying the food and what there is. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:22
If it comes with salad and stuff. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
Whilst Eva and Rosie contemplate their next meal, | 0:22:28 | 0:22:31
there's no time to slouch on the couch in Cardiff. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:34
Fuelled up on beans and cheese, | 0:22:34 | 0:22:35
it's time for Bonnie and Jenni to get physical. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:39
What we've planned for this afternoon is to go for a nice long bike ride, | 0:22:39 | 0:22:43
and hopefully we'll get to Castell Coch. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
SHE GASPS | 0:22:46 | 0:22:47
Really? That is long! | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
But it's all downhill on the way back. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
So, we've gotta go uphill? Slightly. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:54
Oh, my God. I'm going to be rolling back down. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
ALL LAUGH | 0:22:56 | 0:22:59
What was that? I don't know what to wear! | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
With what you're about to do, Bonnie, | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
fashion will be the least of your worries. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:05
Countdown to the go. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:08
I've been told it's about five miles there, about five miles back. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:12
Yeah, if I can start going. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
I haven't been on a bike in years. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
Jen, Jen, Jen, Jen! | 0:23:20 | 0:23:22
Put your breaks on then. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
I am! You're not even that close. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:26
I was. Now I'm getting close. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
I don't think many people my age do exercise at all, | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
unless they're overweight and they're trying to lose weight. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
I know a lot of my friends don't walk anywhere anymore. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
If we're going somewhere, we always try and get a lift. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
In Abersychan, party preparations are under way. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
Tonight, we're having a little welcome party for Rosie and Eva. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:54
We're going to have a barbeque and do a lot of the things that | 0:23:54 | 0:23:58
we would do if our girls were home, | 0:23:58 | 0:24:00
so we'll cook a lot of the same things. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
Yeah, that's lovely. Thank you. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:06
With a tub of pop to drink and a mountain of meat to consume, | 0:24:06 | 0:24:10
Eva and Rosie have taken it upon themselves to prepare | 0:24:10 | 0:24:12
something a little healthier - a super salad. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:16
Raisins, grapes, lettuce, avocados, | 0:24:16 | 0:24:21
pepper, sweetcorn and... | 0:24:21 | 0:24:24
Raisins. Looks like little rabbit droppings. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
I think the nice thing is that Rosie and Eva | 0:24:30 | 0:24:32
have had a little bit of input into tonight's menu. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
They've done an absolutely amazing salad, really beautiful. | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
Already I can see that they're starting to have a very small | 0:24:38 | 0:24:42
but definite impact on us, | 0:24:42 | 0:24:43
because I can't wait to eat the salad, whereas normally I'd be | 0:24:43 | 0:24:46
thinking, "I can't wait to get my teeth around that steak." | 0:24:46 | 0:24:48
But I'm actually thinking how nice the salad looks, | 0:24:48 | 0:24:50
so I think that's brilliant. | 0:24:50 | 0:24:52
Back on the bikes, Bonnie's feeling the burn. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
Oh, my God, I don't know what to do. | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
I'm not as fit as I thought I would be. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
Oh, my legs. | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
My bum is hurting already. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:07
My bum is killing. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:09
'This is kind of a wakeup call. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
'I should be way fitter than this.' | 0:25:12 | 0:25:13
Jenni, on the other hand, is loving the challenge. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:17
OK, Jen? Yeah. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:18
Attacking the one-in-ten gradient up to Castell Coch | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
with grit and determination. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
Just keep your legs steady. That's it. You're doing well. Well done. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
Now cycle faster. Cracking. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:31
Helped out by her able new fitness instructor - | 0:25:31 | 0:25:33
ex-army corporal Frederick Thompson. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
Big cheer, yay! Come on, we did it. Well done. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
She did absolutely fantastic, fair due to her. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:46
How you feeling? | 0:25:46 | 0:25:48
Tired, but proud of myself. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:53
That's good. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:55
The meat is on in Abersychan. | 0:25:57 | 0:25:59
The salad's on the table, but will there be any takers amongst | 0:25:59 | 0:26:02
the arriving guests? | 0:26:02 | 0:26:04
Jenni's school friends Beth and Grace... | 0:26:04 | 0:26:06
..Bonnie's boyfriend Joel and her best friend Amber. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
As the burgers broil, | 0:26:13 | 0:26:14
there's a chance to compare some very different lifestyles. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:18
How far did you say you run? | 0:26:20 | 0:26:22
I do 800, 1,500, cross country. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
Cross country is quite long, isn't it? Yeah. 4K? | 0:26:25 | 0:26:29
Really? Oh, my God. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:31
Can you see Bonnie doing that? | 0:26:31 | 0:26:33
I don't know. She's just not a sporty person. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
I think she wants to be more sporty and stuff | 0:26:36 | 0:26:40
because she does get proper worried about her weight. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
It's constantly on her mind, about her weight, and she hates it. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:47
She's only put the weight on over the past two years, I'd say. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:51
She looks back at pictures and thinks, "Why am I not the same size?" | 0:26:51 | 0:26:56
The last time I rode a bike would have been... | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
six years ago at least, maybe even longer. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:03
Well done, Bonnie. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
I haven't done anything like that for a long time. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
Woo! I'm feeling really good. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
Exercise gives you a good feeling, I think. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:14
All the blood is rushing around my body. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:16
It's been a first day of contrasting experiences and contrasting foods. | 0:27:19 | 0:27:24
There you go, sweetheart. You want the works? | 0:27:24 | 0:27:26
And there's a long way to go if the Whewell family truly want to | 0:27:26 | 0:27:29
get to grips with their lifestyle and their diet, | 0:27:29 | 0:27:31
and some big questions to be answered. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:34
Burgers? Onions? | 0:27:34 | 0:27:36
Can Bonnie stop bingeing on takeaways? | 0:27:36 | 0:27:38
I feel like, in my head now, I know I can do it more | 0:27:38 | 0:27:42
and I've got the will there to get fitter. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:46
Can Jenni overcome her fussy attitudes to food? | 0:27:46 | 0:27:48
Try it. You've gotta try stuff. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:50
The whole point of this experience is to trying new stuff. | 0:27:50 | 0:27:52
Nope, I'm not eating it. | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
Fine. | 0:27:55 | 0:27:56 | |
Chicken's off, I'm afraid, nobody can have any. | 0:27:56 | 0:27:59
And will Helen and Warren accept | 0:27:59 | 0:28:01
that it is them who need to take the lead? | 0:28:01 | 0:28:04
Why? Cos I'm having it all. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:06
I feel that parents have quite a big responsibility | 0:28:06 | 0:28:09
in the upbringing of the children because they are the key educators. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:12
So, if those behaviours are there from the start, | 0:28:12 | 0:28:16
the child is going to learn bad behaviours | 0:28:16 | 0:28:18
and that's not going to be preferable for a long life. | 0:28:18 | 0:28:22
In the next Family Life Swap, Sarah tells it like it is... | 0:28:25 | 0:28:29
Life is tough - it is a competition. | 0:28:29 | 0:28:32
..Rosie has a confectionary confession... | 0:28:32 | 0:28:34
I dream about cake and I dream about my teeth falling out. | 0:28:34 | 0:28:38
Really? | 0:28:38 | 0:28:40
..and Bonnie has some candid online advice for Helen and Warren. | 0:28:40 | 0:28:43
It's you that need to change! | 0:28:43 | 0:28:45
