The wellbeing industry is booming.

0:00:020:00:03

More people seek alternative ways

0:00:030:00:05

to cope with rising obesity, stress and depression.

0:00:050:00:09

The stress levels have been getting heavier.

0:00:090:00:11

I don't understand why I'm so stressed and I can't switch off.

0:00:110:00:14

Heading for a retreat on an island in the South China Sea,

0:00:140:00:18

Nick Knowles joins a group who are all seeking the antidote

0:00:180:00:21

for the strains of modern life.

0:00:210:00:23

There's this place down in Thailand

0:00:230:00:25

says it can actually change your head around,

0:00:250:00:27

change your inner space around.

0:00:270:00:28

How will the gang cope with a completely new way of living?

0:00:280:00:32

I think that some of the participants,

0:00:320:00:34

they didn't really know what they were getting into.

0:00:340:00:36

It's almost cultish.

0:00:360:00:37

I think it's going to be a challenge.

0:00:370:00:39

Will 28 days of detox and alternative therapies

0:00:390:00:42

be enough to change their lives?

0:00:420:00:44

I don't think anyone would be surprised to find out

0:00:440:00:47

I'm the least likely person to be taking on this challenge.

0:00:470:00:49

This is one kick-ass detox!

0:00:490:00:52

Welcome to Thailand.

0:00:530:00:55

Milton and Kathy have taken their usual morning walk

0:01:050:01:09

to be the first of the gang at the hospital.

0:01:090:01:11

They will all be tested to provide their final set of results

0:01:110:01:15

and prove whether their stay at the retreat

0:01:150:01:18

has had a positive effect on their health.

0:01:180:01:21

Some of the effects are more immediately obvious, however,

0:01:210:01:26

and Billy's back to full power at last.

0:01:260:01:29

With their increased energy, Ron takes them all to burn some off,

0:01:330:01:37

at a gym with a difference -

0:01:370:01:40

a Muay Thai gym.

0:01:400:01:42

Thai kickboxing.

0:01:430:01:45

No, no, no, no! A kick for beginning.

0:01:570:02:01

Here for basics, for fighting.

0:02:020:02:05

INDISTINCT

0:02:060:02:08

Hands up. Hands up. When you do that, jab.

0:02:080:02:14

When you come, come for chin.

0:02:140:02:17

One-two, jab-jab.

0:02:170:02:21

One, two, jab-jab.

0:02:210:02:23

INDISTINCT

0:02:230:02:27

When you kick,

0:02:270:02:29

grab here, OK?

0:02:290:02:31

-Yeah. Here?

-Right.

0:02:310:02:33

No, no, no...

0:02:330:02:36

I can't...

0:02:360:02:38

OK.

0:02:450:02:46

Come on. Right kick, right kick.

0:02:480:02:51

I'm dead, I'm not tired.

0:03:030:03:06

That was energising. I haven't lifted my leg that high for ages,

0:03:060:03:09

you know what I mean?

0:03:090:03:10

It's just remembering the movements, like left, right.

0:03:100:03:14

-He's got the bags under the knee.

-And the language barrier.

0:03:140:03:16

And the language barrier, yeah.

0:03:160:03:18

Yeah, but you kind of get the grasp of what he's saying.

0:03:180:03:21

But it was good, I really, really enjoyed it, really good.

0:03:210:03:23

In the line-up, they started with us

0:03:230:03:25

and we were like, "What? What are we doing?"

0:03:250:03:28

Never been here before.

0:03:280:03:29

I think the yoga breathing technique really helps,

0:03:290:03:32

you know, as I'm trying to get round the ring knackered!

0:03:320:03:35

Breathing in through my nose, you know, getting it into my core...

0:03:350:03:38

-Feel...

-This one?

-Yeah, yeah.

0:03:380:03:40

I tried that one but he looked at me as if he was going to knock me out.

0:03:400:03:42

How strong were they, though?

0:03:420:03:45

-They're powerful, they're powerful.

-So solid.

0:03:450:03:47

After a quick pit stop to collect the others,

0:03:500:03:52

the gang are being taken out for some well-earned relaxation

0:03:520:03:56

and reflection to a secret spa.

0:03:560:03:58

On one of the highest points in the island,

0:04:230:04:26

the gang are treated to a view of Koh Phangan

0:04:260:04:29

from a spectacular angle.

0:04:290:04:31

The jungle!

0:04:310:04:33

-That's amazing, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:04:330:04:34

That's one of the islands, out there?

0:04:360:04:38

Could be.

0:04:380:04:39

There was a programme on recently

0:04:450:04:46

where people gave up sugar for two weeks.

0:04:460:04:48

We've given up sugar, caffeine, alcohol, meat, dairy, wheat...

0:04:480:04:54

-Yeah!

-Everything, for a month!

-Yeah.

0:04:540:04:58

I thought it was going to be about getting myself

0:04:580:05:01

physically back in shape. I wanted to lose weight

0:05:010:05:03

and I wanted to get healthy with the food and things.

0:05:030:05:06

But in actual fact, it became secondary

0:05:060:05:10

and less important than actually slowing my mind down

0:05:100:05:13

and actually re-finding myself.

0:05:130:05:16

It sounds like such a hippy thing to say,

0:05:160:05:18

but it's like, the simplest way of saying it is,

0:05:180:05:21

it's like I've got my mojo back.

0:05:210:05:22

I'm suddenly really excited about going back to work,

0:05:220:05:25

going out and sort of going back into the world

0:05:250:05:27

and going back and being at full tilt.

0:05:270:05:30

It's like a little reboot.

0:05:300:05:31

I wish I'd done it ten years ago.

0:05:310:05:33

Five years ago, certainly.

0:05:330:05:34

-Yeah, yeah.

-It shows that the mental aspect, which you weren't expecting,

0:05:340:05:38

and finding yourself, but it's also showed us, I think,

0:05:380:05:43

that everything is...

0:05:430:05:45

Kind of works together.

0:05:450:05:46

-So the food helps with that aspect, as well.

-That's true.

0:05:460:05:50

And the yoga, and that, and the self-control, that helps.

0:05:500:05:53

-A combination.

-All these things that help to better you.

0:05:530:05:57

-It's brilliant.

-See what you've done?!

0:05:570:05:59

THEY LAUGH

0:05:590:06:01

I think yoga and meditation have some negative connotations.

0:06:010:06:05

I never wanted to do meditation

0:06:050:06:07

because I thought it sounded ridiculous.

0:06:070:06:09

I think it's about taking the first step.

0:06:090:06:11

Some of those people, you don't think would come.

0:06:110:06:13

Once they get here and have a little taste of it...

0:06:130:06:15

They'll enjoy it, because it's almost...

0:06:150:06:18

So, what are you going to say, then,

0:06:180:06:20

when you're back working on the cars,

0:06:200:06:22

and you're in the line of cars,

0:06:220:06:24

waiting for people to come out

0:06:240:06:26

and they go, "Milton, I saw you go on that Retreat,"

0:06:260:06:28

"doing all that yoga and all that reiki and stuff.

0:06:280:06:31

"Load of old codswallop, isn't it?"

0:06:310:06:33

No, but I tell them what it done for me, how it chilled me out,

0:06:330:06:38

got me a bit more lively and that's what it's done for me.

0:06:380:06:41

It makes you... It does make you stronger.

0:06:410:06:43

You feel stronger inside.

0:06:430:06:44

Your posture's better, you're not slouching, you're kind of...

0:06:440:06:48

Look at him. I've never seen him slouch any day I've been here.

0:06:480:06:52

To be fair, you could iron a shirt on him, he's that upright.

0:06:520:06:56

The other day, when we met the monk

0:07:000:07:02

and I wasn't particularly impressed by the whole thing,

0:07:020:07:04

did that offend you, as a Buddhist?

0:07:040:07:07

You were talking about him at a very personal level

0:07:070:07:09

and it felt like you'd missed the point of what he was trying to say.

0:07:090:07:13

His life might not be 100% without problems or difficulties,

0:07:130:07:18

but he was carrying a message and I thought you shot the messenger.

0:07:180:07:21

So, yeah, I did feel a bit offended by that.

0:07:210:07:24

I think there's a possibility that I did, to a certain extent,

0:07:240:07:27

that I actually did do that.

0:07:270:07:29

It kind of irritated me,

0:07:290:07:30

the suggestion that somehow he's got all the answers

0:07:300:07:33

and we in the West have got it all wrong.

0:07:330:07:34

Well, I don't think he's got the answers,

0:07:340:07:36

but what he's saying is there is a teaching

0:07:360:07:38

that's 2,500 years old that could be really helpful.

0:07:380:07:40

Yeah, but every religion says that.

0:07:400:07:42

I don't consider it an organised religion,

0:07:420:07:44

and most Buddhists wouldn't,

0:07:440:07:45

but it is considered an organised religion by most people.

0:07:450:07:47

But what bothered me about it was the suggestion

0:07:470:07:49

that somehow in the West,

0:07:490:07:50

because, you know, we don't care for each other,

0:07:500:07:53

we don't care for ourselves and we've kind of lost our way.

0:07:530:07:56

No, I don't think he was saying that, Nick.

0:07:560:07:58

I think you heard that, but I don't...

0:07:580:08:00

That's not what I heard.

0:08:000:08:01

You came here burnt out.

0:08:010:08:03

-Yes.

-And you help a lot of people.

0:08:030:08:06

So he was speaking to you and about you.

0:08:060:08:08

He wasn't... I didn't hear him saying anything

0:08:080:08:11

-that wasn't true for you or for me.

-Yeah, I suppose.

0:08:110:08:14

Again, very easy for somebody who...

0:08:140:08:18

Again, it's the person rather than the message, you're quite right.

0:08:180:08:21

I was more bothered by the person than the message.

0:08:210:08:23

Organised religion is one thing

0:08:230:08:25

and I absolutely agree with you about that,

0:08:250:08:28

but spirituality is something else.

0:08:280:08:31

But it's not going to work for everyone, is it?

0:08:310:08:33

-What isn't?

-Any of the process that we've been doing.

0:08:330:08:35

Some people aren't going to be able to get through the fasting,

0:08:350:08:38

some people aren't going to be able to get through...

0:08:380:08:41

are not going to enjoy the reiki.

0:08:410:08:42

Other people are going to enjoy it in the way

0:08:420:08:44

that it's been surprising that people have on this.

0:08:440:08:46

There's a saying...

0:08:460:08:47

I hope people are more open to it, as a result of watching this.

0:08:470:08:50

There's three things that I've been told

0:08:500:08:51

that really help any kind of recovery,

0:08:510:08:53

and that's honesty, open-mindedness and willingness.

0:08:530:08:55

And I think if people come and they're honest

0:08:550:08:57

and they're open-minded and they're willing,

0:08:570:08:59

I think they'll get a hell of a lot out of it,

0:08:590:09:01

at whatever level they are

0:09:010:09:02

and however much they want to open

0:09:020:09:04

-to other levels of consciousness or not.

-Yeah, I think you're right.

0:09:040:09:08

There we go, we did find somewhere where we agreed in the end!

0:09:080:09:10

HE CHUCKLES

0:09:100:09:13

With Nick continuing to wrestle

0:09:130:09:15

with the more spiritual aspects of the retreat,

0:09:150:09:17

he goes to look for Claire

0:09:170:09:20

to talk about her stresses as a police officer.

0:09:200:09:23

You came here thinking that you were suffering from depression.

0:09:230:09:26

-Mm.

-Do you still believe that?

0:09:260:09:28

Erm, I've had a lot of different labels put on

0:09:280:09:33

what I was going through.

0:09:330:09:36

Given what you go through, it would be surprising if you didn't.

0:09:360:09:39

It's not surprising, yeah. It isn't surprising.

0:09:390:09:41

And I don't think anyone...

0:09:410:09:44

I think people are shocked because at work, I appear OK.

0:09:440:09:47

So you try and hide the effects it has on you.

0:09:480:09:50

But I think, over time, you can't get away from it.

0:09:500:09:53

How many of your colleagues, do you think, are suffering in silence

0:09:530:09:56

and not letting on that they're...

0:09:560:09:58

Probably quite a few.

0:09:580:09:59

Definitely with stress. Definitely with stress.

0:09:590:10:02

But I definitely enjoy my job and I love what I do

0:10:020:10:06

and I do it to the best of my ability

0:10:060:10:08

and sometimes it doesn't work out

0:10:080:10:09

for the people that you want to help

0:10:090:10:11

and that is quite hard.

0:10:110:10:12

What I think, rather than you being upset with yourself,

0:10:120:10:14

I think maybe we, as a society, have let you down

0:10:140:10:17

by not actually giving you the support

0:10:170:10:20

and making you understand how valued you are.

0:10:200:10:22

I think we, as a society, need to find a way

0:10:220:10:25

to make you feel valued for what you do for us.

0:10:250:10:27

And not just you, but everybody else that does the job.

0:10:270:10:31

As I say, you can't keep facing the bad people

0:10:310:10:33

and have people scream abuse in your face all day

0:10:330:10:35

without it causing effect.

0:10:350:10:37

-Yeah.

-Very rarely does anybody write in out of the blue and go,

0:10:370:10:39

"By the way, thanks very much

0:10:390:10:41

"for making sure there are no burglars in my street."

0:10:410:10:43

Yeah, exactly.

0:10:430:10:45

I mean, don't get me wrong, people do say thank you and it's nice.

0:10:450:10:48

But a lot of the time... It's quite rare.

0:10:480:10:51

Cos we need people with your kind of heart in the force, don't we?

0:10:510:10:54

Yeah.

0:10:560:10:57

You can't just have all, like, really hard cases.

0:10:570:11:00

You've got to have people with your heart.

0:11:000:11:02

I think I just need to work out a way

0:11:070:11:11

of not getting drawn in too much to other people's bad times.

0:11:110:11:18

What I want to do today is I want to show you things that you have been

0:11:320:11:35

eating or drinking while you've been here now for three weeks,

0:11:350:11:39

almost a month. Things that you can make at home to be healthier,

0:11:390:11:43

basically. You want to alkalize your body

0:11:430:11:45

so you create a good environment,

0:11:450:11:47

so that the bacterias, viruses don't thrive

0:11:470:11:50

and don't party inside of you.

0:11:500:11:51

OK. We're going to make cashew cheese spread.

0:11:510:11:54

Salt. So, of course, it's not cheese.

0:11:540:11:57

-It's cashew cheese.

-Better.

0:11:570:11:59

This mixture, I use it as a mayonnaise.

0:12:010:12:04

-No, thanks.

-That's pretty good.

0:12:040:12:06

Like a cheese straw kind of thing going on.

0:12:060:12:09

Dried fruit is really good.

0:12:100:12:13

In preparation for returning to their real lives,

0:12:130:12:17

Dominique and Derek teach the gang

0:12:170:12:19

how to prepare tasty and nutritious vegan food.

0:12:190:12:23

And this is raspberry and chia.

0:12:230:12:25

I just soak my chia in a blended raspberry puree

0:12:250:12:29

and that's it. This one is pecan and cinnamon ice cream

0:12:290:12:33

and this one is chocolate ice cream

0:12:330:12:34

and they are both made from coconut milk.

0:12:340:12:37

-Yes.

-Mmm!

0:12:370:12:38

-Very nice.

-Really nice, that.

0:12:390:12:40

That's the first time in this entire trip that...

0:12:400:12:44

Like going to a Michelin-star restaurant

0:12:440:12:46

to have a chocolate cheesecake.

0:12:460:12:48

I'd rather have that than the chocolate cheesecake.

0:12:480:12:50

And that, with the fruit in it,

0:12:500:12:52

I would rather have than a pudding in a Michelin-star restaurant,

0:12:520:12:54

as well. That's the first time I've been properly blown away.

0:12:540:12:58

Some of you guys have eaten the Caesar salad, I heard.

0:12:580:13:01

Yes, very good.

0:13:010:13:03

You like the dressing.

0:13:030:13:04

So I made this sauce with again cashews.

0:13:040:13:07

OK? So, it's always better to soak your nuts.

0:13:070:13:10

-I explained to...

-Sorry!

-You can't say that.

0:13:100:13:13

Oh, my God!

0:13:130:13:14

You can't say that!

0:13:140:13:16

You should say "the cashews".

0:13:160:13:17

Whoever thought veganism could be so much fun?

0:13:170:13:19

LAUGHTER

0:13:190:13:22

The goal of the retreat is to change the individual

0:13:280:13:31

through nutritional, physical and mental training

0:13:310:13:35

to become calm and in control of the mind, body and spirit.

0:13:350:13:40

And, finally, it seems to be working.

0:13:400:13:44

Even for Nick.

0:13:460:13:48

Physically, I'm a lot healthier.

0:13:490:13:52

Mentally, I'm calmer.

0:13:520:13:53

And in terms of priorities,

0:13:530:13:54

I think I've learned where my priorities are,

0:13:540:13:56

rather than thinking that work is everything.

0:13:560:14:00

CHANTING

0:14:050:14:09

The gang have arrived for their walking meditation.

0:14:090:14:13

One of the ancient world's oldest meditation techniques,

0:14:160:14:20

the walking practice is an observation-based,

0:14:200:14:23

self-exploratory journey, trying to achieve a balanced mind.

0:14:230:14:27

I developed a lot of different types of walk...

0:15:370:15:39

-SHE LAUGHS

-..throughout my three-hour journey.

0:15:390:15:42

I found it quite hard, actually.

0:15:420:15:45

It's hard, especially walking on this concrete.

0:15:450:15:48

-Yeah.

-And we've been out already this morning, as well.

0:15:480:15:50

So it's kind of taking its toll.

0:15:500:15:52

I found it really difficult to keep bringing my...

0:15:520:15:56

Because a noise and your mind would start going.

0:15:560:15:59

You looked like you were in the zone all the time.

0:15:590:16:02

And then I was conscious I could see people's feet.

0:16:020:16:04

It's so weird cos this is slow.

0:16:040:16:07

Slow, that's the hardest thing.

0:16:070:16:09

Yeah, kind of controlled.

0:16:090:16:10

-Yeah.

-And you don't think that's going to be tiring.

0:16:100:16:13

-Yeah.

-But it really is.

0:16:130:16:15

Yeah. I could walk for miles now.

0:16:150:16:17

I could walk for five hours at my own pace, but to walk this slow,

0:16:170:16:20

in this confined space...

0:16:200:16:22

This control, it does things to your mind, do you know what I mean?

0:16:220:16:24

I got into, like, a walking zone

0:16:240:16:27

where I thought I was walking quite quickly,

0:16:270:16:30

but I was obviously walking slower because people were overtaking me.

0:16:300:16:35

Even you were overtaking me.

0:16:350:16:38

-I couldn't believe it.

-He actually came up to me and said, "Slow down,

0:16:380:16:41

"go slowly, just think of your steps."

0:16:410:16:44

And when I did do that, it felt like I was floating.

0:16:440:16:47

Know what I mean?

0:16:470:16:49

And time just kind of went.

0:16:490:16:51

And then, bang, three hours.

0:16:530:16:55

Done.

0:16:550:16:56

The gang arrive back to find Nick packing.

0:17:010:17:04

I've had a phone call from home

0:17:040:17:07

with an illness in the family,

0:17:070:17:09

which is obviously a bit of a worry.

0:17:090:17:11

The net result is that the person in the family is OK.

0:17:130:17:19

And...

0:17:210:17:22

But I feel I ought to be there. It's interesting

0:17:240:17:26

cos the point of me coming here was to try and work out...

0:17:260:17:29

Well, to get well, obviously.

0:17:290:17:30

But also, in my head, to slow my head down,

0:17:300:17:32

to be able to slow my head down

0:17:320:17:33

at the end and the beginning of the day.

0:17:330:17:35

But the other thing, as well, to try and get

0:17:350:17:37

that work-life balance right.

0:17:370:17:39

I kind of know I need to be there.

0:17:400:17:41

And perhaps before I came on this trip,

0:17:410:17:43

I would've said, "No, I'm at work.

0:17:430:17:45

"I need to stay at work. This is my job and this is what I do."

0:17:450:17:48

But the truth of the matter is I know I kind of need to be home

0:17:480:17:51

with that family member, adding support.

0:17:510:17:54

So I think I've learned the lessons I need to learn here.

0:17:540:17:58

I think my life has changed, so I don't need to be here any longer

0:17:580:18:01

and it's all right for me to be there, I think. So...

0:18:010:18:06

Before Nick heads for the airport,

0:18:060:18:08

there's just one last piece of business left.

0:18:080:18:11

You did your test this morning.

0:18:110:18:12

-This is great.

-Went to the hospital.

0:18:120:18:14

Went to the hospital. I see here that you lost 10kg.

0:18:140:18:16

-Yeah.

-Good for you.

0:18:160:18:18

I know! It's amazing, isn't it?

0:18:180:18:19

It was all in your face and your double chin.

0:18:190:18:23

What do you mean I had a double chin?

0:18:230:18:25

Yeah, that's true.

0:18:250:18:26

Blood pressure went down. You didn't have very high blood pressure.

0:18:260:18:30

Blood pressure's always been good,

0:18:300:18:31

but it has come down to that of a 25-year-old athlete.

0:18:310:18:34

All the canoeing paid off.

0:18:370:18:38

You went to the nude beach, tell me.

0:18:380:18:40

Yeah, that was the motivation every morning -

0:18:400:18:42

-to get as far as the nude beach and come back again, yeah.

-OK.

0:18:420:18:45

The good news is cholesterol went down.

0:18:450:18:48

Total cholesterol - you were at 227.

0:18:480:18:52

And I should really be at around?

0:18:520:18:54

Conventional medicines say under 200,

0:18:540:18:57

but cardiologists say under 150 to be at bullet-proof risk, you know.

0:18:570:19:02

And I'm at?

0:19:020:19:04

You are now at 156.

0:19:040:19:07

So, basically, you're pretty good.

0:19:070:19:10

Basically, I'm now healthy and I have the physique

0:19:100:19:13

and metabolic rate of a 25-year-old athlete.

0:19:130:19:15

-It's kind of almost like a magic bullet.

-Yep.

0:19:150:19:17

And I have to say I was sceptical

0:19:170:19:19

about how much effect it would have when I came here.

0:19:190:19:22

And you've won me over with it.

0:19:220:19:24

I think this isn't just for people

0:19:240:19:27

who want to wear baggy pants and braid their hair.

0:19:270:19:30

-Like me!

-Well, you know, it should be for everybody.

0:19:300:19:32

-For sure.

-And I hope that people

0:19:320:19:35

will look past the setting and accoutrements.

0:19:350:19:38

Yeah, you can do it at home.

0:19:380:19:40

-Well, yeah, that's the thing.

-It's true that when you arrive,

0:19:400:19:43

you were sceptical. You were scaring me a little!

0:19:430:19:46

-Why?

-Well, you were scaring me a little

0:19:460:19:49

because you were so sceptical, you know,

0:19:490:19:51

but I saw the change, so I was positive,

0:19:510:19:55

I was confident that, at the end, you would see the results.

0:19:550:19:58

Sadly, April is not seeing the benefits she had hoped for

0:19:580:20:02

with her ongoing eye condition.

0:20:020:20:04

Last night was very, very challenging for me.

0:20:040:20:07

I've had so many rips in my eyes, in my corneas, during this time here.

0:20:110:20:18

In these last couple of days,

0:20:180:20:20

I don't know if you'll see much of me.

0:20:200:20:22

And if you don't, I hope you'll understand.

0:20:250:20:27

And I love you guys. Bye.

0:20:290:20:33

With April holed up in her room, Luke visits with a machine

0:20:330:20:36

that measures how her heart-rate variability

0:20:360:20:38

affects her nervous system.

0:20:380:20:40

If you have a high heart-rate variability,

0:20:400:20:43

that means your heart constantly adapts

0:20:430:20:46

and it's a sign of good health, good homoeostasis.

0:20:460:20:49

The HRV monitor is commonly used by athletes

0:20:490:20:52

to measure their autonomic nervous systems.

0:20:520:20:54

With you, your heart rate variability is 60% low

0:20:540:21:00

and that just is showing for me

0:21:000:21:02

that we need to work with your nervous system a little bit more.

0:21:020:21:05

My concern is that you are looking to reiki, to Oran,

0:21:050:21:11

to all these healing modalities outside of yourself

0:21:110:21:15

and, for me, I would like you to try and do things

0:21:150:21:19

that empower you more, if that makes sense.

0:21:190:21:23

So when you have a good night's sleep,

0:21:230:21:25

I know it's very easy to be, like,

0:21:250:21:27

"Yes," and then have such a high,

0:21:270:21:29

and then the next night if you don't, it's then such a low.

0:21:290:21:32

I know it must be very difficult,

0:21:320:21:35

but when I hear that you are still smoking sometimes

0:21:350:21:39

or drinking coffee, then I do ask the question -

0:21:390:21:43

what is it that's blocking you from self-healing?

0:21:430:21:46

And I do just want to empower you to take this on.

0:21:460:21:51

Thank you, Luke.

0:21:510:21:53

Feeling better, April joins the girls and Billy

0:21:560:21:59

to learn a yoga technique that takes their practice to new heights.

0:21:590:22:04

Oh, it's beautiful to feel that trust and that surrender

0:22:040:22:07

and that's really the essence of this practice,

0:22:070:22:09

to cultivate these key aspects

0:22:090:22:11

in the art of relating.

0:22:110:22:13

Sebastian practises what is known as acroyoga,

0:22:130:22:17

and is designed to enhance and combine

0:22:170:22:20

the modalities of physiotherapy, breathing, mindfulness

0:22:200:22:24

and trust between the two participants.

0:22:240:22:27

-You're doing it, Billy.

-No!

0:22:270:22:29

-Yes, you are.

-No, I believe in what I see.

0:22:290:22:32

Oh, wow!

0:22:370:22:38

Ever up for the whole experience,

0:22:470:22:49

Billy steps up to the plate to have a go...

0:22:490:22:52

..even after he said he wouldn't.

0:22:540:22:56

Right, straighten your legs.

0:23:060:23:08

There you go.

0:23:080:23:10

And look up. Lift your chest. Lift your chest.

0:23:100:23:13

Smile! Spread your wings.

0:23:130:23:15

LAUGHTER

0:23:150:23:18

Relaxed and happy, they enjoy a meal together,

0:23:300:23:34

waiting to see what tomorrow's test results will bring.

0:23:340:23:37

I have your results.

0:23:390:23:41

We looked at the results from when you arrived, which were alarming.

0:23:410:23:46

We knew that you lost ten kilos, which is amazing,

0:23:460:23:50

which will drop your cholesterol.

0:23:500:23:52

-I lost me wallet!

-So you came with a total cholesterol of 268.

0:23:520:23:57

-Yes.

-And we learned that it should be under 150.

0:23:570:24:00

Laura, Laura, Laura...

0:24:000:24:02

You are down at 191.

0:24:020:24:05

-That's so much.

-Oh, you did drop.

0:24:050:24:08

-You did well.

-Thank you.

0:24:080:24:10

-Maggie!

-Yes.

0:24:100:24:12

Cholesterol, total...

0:24:120:24:15

-You were at 202.

-Yes.

0:24:150:24:17

You are down 176.

0:24:170:24:19

-Good for you.

-Brilliant!

0:24:190:24:20

-Yay!

-Well done, darling.

0:24:200:24:23

And you are now 181.

0:24:230:24:25

Well, that's good.

0:24:250:24:26

Yes, 150 would be bullet-proof.

0:24:260:24:28

As Dominique takes the gang through their medical results,

0:24:280:24:31

the quantifiable effects are not the only positive changes

0:24:310:24:34

that they will take home from the retreat.

0:24:340:24:37

Good job, Billy.

0:24:370:24:38

I feel like I'm back.

0:24:380:24:41

And I'm, like, a lot more engaged and happy to talk to people, and...

0:24:410:24:47

-And row with me!

-And row with you and have a go at everyone.

0:24:480:24:51

-Milton.

-Hey!

0:24:520:24:54

Results, more results.

0:24:560:24:58

-Yup, more results.

-We want more.

0:24:580:24:59

-Let's go straight to the diabetes, the blood sugar.

-Mm-hmm.

0:24:590:25:03

You came here at 170, diabetic.

0:25:030:25:06

You went down to 101, very good.

0:25:060:25:10

-Yep.

-And now...

0:25:100:25:12

-90 again!

-Ta-da!

0:25:120:25:14

It's perfect.

0:25:140:25:15

As beautiful as they may be,

0:25:190:25:21

the presence of fishing boats anchored in this bay

0:25:210:25:23

can only mean one thing.

0:25:230:25:25

Look what's happened.

0:25:270:25:28

Paradise has become a typhoon of rain,

0:25:300:25:35

wind and massive, massive waves from the sea.

0:25:350:25:41

As the storm shows no signs of relenting by the evening,

0:25:520:25:56

the gang have had to move from the beach

0:25:560:25:58

to higher ground for the farewell party.

0:25:580:26:02

But it still hasn't dampened their spirits.

0:26:020:26:05

And Oran gets the party going with a Persian santur.

0:26:070:26:12

It's been a good ride, you know.

0:26:150:26:16

I've enjoyed most of it.

0:26:160:26:19

Some parts, you know, have been a little bit tricky.

0:26:190:26:21

But it's been a great ride.

0:26:210:26:24

I came out here because I needed some time for me.

0:26:240:26:27

I think I found...

0:26:270:26:29

..re-found, if you like, my inner confidence that I think I'd lost.

0:26:300:26:34

You know, me and Kathy are great friends.

0:26:340:26:36

You don't know who you're going to pick or bond with,

0:26:360:26:39

but we just kind of clicked from day one, you know.

0:26:390:26:41

I say to Kathy, "Fancy coming for a run in the morning?"

0:26:410:26:44

"Yeah, what time, five?"

0:26:440:26:45

I didn't know she wanted to come for the whole process of doing it.

0:26:450:26:49

Just before I came, I was quite ill,

0:26:500:26:53

I was taking antidepressants,

0:26:530:26:56

antibiotics, steroids.

0:26:560:26:58

For me, it's all just a growth thing that I really wanted to come here

0:26:580:27:01

and experience, the self-confidence, the anxiety,

0:27:010:27:05

you know, just getting the tools to manage that.

0:27:050:27:07

I think Luke and Shakti and the others have given me that.

0:27:070:27:11

There's been a lot happening, and it's been quite difficult to digest.

0:27:110:27:16

'Learning to work with my breath,'

0:27:160:27:18

learning to work with some different forms of meditation.

0:27:180:27:23

I know that whatever I decide that I'm going to do, going on from here,

0:27:230:27:28

I will succeed.

0:27:280:27:30

I think I'm going back a different person to how I arrived.

0:27:300:27:35

Gradually, over the course of the programme,

0:27:370:27:40

I'm not taking anything now.

0:27:400:27:42

My head feels brilliant.

0:27:420:27:44

My heart feels open.

0:27:440:27:45

I think there's a lot more processing to happen post-retreat

0:27:450:27:49

and I'm quite looking forward to that.

0:27:490:27:51

Because I've seen it happen now, I've come here,

0:27:510:27:54

got into the process and done it all

0:27:540:27:56

and seen the results of it all,

0:27:560:27:57

I'm not going back there.

0:27:570:27:59

Before attempting any of the detox techniques or practices

0:28:260:28:29

demonstrated in The Retreat,

0:28:290:28:31

you are advised to seek out your doctor's advice.
