The Belfast Telegraph received a message

from the owners of the Titanic

to say the ship had hit an iceberg but that message also said,

"There was no danger of loss of life."

The editor of the Telegraph,

he, like all the newspapers throughout the world,

took this at its face value.

After all, it was coming from the owners.

The following day, there were crowds outside the building

and there was an air of disbelief.

Here was a ship from Belfast had suddenly vanished.
