The slide rule A History of the Titanic in 30 Pieces

A century ago,

this was the equivalent of a modern calculator.

This was my grandfather,

Arty Frost's slide rule.

He was in charge of putting the engines into the Titanic.

He was also a member of the Titanic Guarantee Group,

employees of Harland and Wolff's

from the various different departments,

who were sent along with the ship on its maiden voyage.

He was last seen on his way down to the engine room.

That's where the ship parted

and the waters would have got in.

At the end he may have been helping in keeping the engines going

to feed the power to the dynamos

so that there would still be electric light for everybody.

I think he was a brave man.

I just hope that when the end came, it was quick.
