Hi, I'm Melissa Suffield, actress and reporter. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:14
And I'm Radzi Chinyanganya, athlete and TV presenter. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
If you're a fan of EastEnders, you may remember me | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
as Lucy Beale, who I played through my teenage years. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:23
I was constantly being judged on my appearance rather | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
than my acting ability. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
It put a real pressure on me to be slim and beautiful all the time. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
It meant I spent half my life wearing push-up bras | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
and Spanx pants. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:34
What? Isn't Spandex back? | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
Yeah, in the back of my wardrobe. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:39
Now, although I may be a guy, | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
I've had my fair share of feeling insecure about the way I look. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:45
I'm definitely not tall, and I'm far from Mr Universe. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:48
But let me say, | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
this man proved that real fitness beats giant abs any day. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
At just 21, he signed up to the TV show Gladiators. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
MUSIC: "Eye Of the Tiger" by Survivor | 0:18:56 | 0:19:03
And weren't you the lightest contestant | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
-they ever had on the show? -Yeah, I was 10 stones. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
Yeah, in a David and Goliath style battle, Radzi won! Woo! | 0:19:08 | 0:19:13
Anyway, we've come here to a high school in the West Country | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
to conduct an exciting new experiment. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:18
And it's called Body Talk. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:20
-Hi, guys. -Hey. -I'm Melissa. -And I'm Radzi. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:32
We're here today to talk to you guys about body image. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
So, first of all, what do you think the definition of body image is? | 0:19:35 | 0:19:39
The way you feel about being who you are. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
I think body image is the way you feel and how others view you. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
I think body image is when you define yourself into a category | 0:19:46 | 0:19:50
of what you think you look like. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:51
You judge yourself and your self-esteem. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:55
Body image is basically the way you feel about the way you look. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:58
So now, before you do anything else, | 0:19:58 | 0:20:00
we'd like you to fill out our Body Talk surveys. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
All we need you to do is fill out, on a scale of one to ten, | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
how you're feeling about the way you look right now. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
So if you put between five and ten, you're feeling good about yourself. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
And if you put from nought to five, | 0:20:10 | 0:20:11
you're probably having a bit of a rubbish day. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:13
But don't worry, it's totally anonymous, | 0:20:13 | 0:20:16
so we want you to be completely honest. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
OK, this is my ballot box. I'm going to ask you to fill them out | 0:20:18 | 0:20:22
and put them in here, is that OK? | 0:20:22 | 0:20:23
The influence of the media certainly needs to take a big | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
part of the blame when it comes to us feeling bad about our bodies. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
But there are other causes closer to us which can also make us feel bad. | 0:20:36 | 0:20:40
Body Talk and body-bullying are quite common. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
You know what we mean. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:46
When we say something bad about the way another person looks, | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
be it your friends, your classmates, a celebrity, or even yourself. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:54
Now, you might think you're being funny, | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
but put yourself on the receiving end. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:57
It can be very upsetting. | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
In some cases, the impact can be devastating, with long-term | 0:21:02 | 0:21:06
and even deadly consequences. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:08
Guys, as we can see from your body image surveys, | 0:21:08 | 0:21:11
you're not feeling great about the way you look right now. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:14
So we're going to see if it's possible | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
to improve those scores over just two days. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:18
What we want to do is ban Body Talk bullying. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:20
We want to see if we can get you feeling | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
a bit better about yourselves. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
What we're going to do is called Bright Body Talk. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
It's not just about banning negative Body Talk, | 0:21:27 | 0:21:29
but about encouraging positive Body Talk. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
So over the next couple of days we want you guys to stop all | 0:21:32 | 0:21:35
of your negative comments to each other and basically feed each other | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
compliments about how great you look and how great you are. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:43
-No more negativity, yes? -ALL: Yeah! -Positivity! -ALL: Yeah! | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
-Cool, compliments for your friends? -ALL: Yeah! -Wicked. Good to go. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:51
'I say, are you getting your friends down | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
'with your witty body image banter? | 0:21:56 | 0:21:59
'When you say bad things about the way someone looks, | 0:21:59 | 0:22:01
'are you making them feel sad about the way they look? | 0:22:01 | 0:22:04
'Well, are you? | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
'Time to try Bright Body Talk.' | 0:22:07 | 0:22:10
-I love your hands so much. -Thank you. You're such a good singer. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:19
Oh, I really like your eyes. They bring out your face. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:22
Thank you, Chloe. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:24
-Yeah, um, I like your new Facebook picture. -Cheers. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:28
I like your eye colour. It's really nice. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
It's, like, reflecting around your face. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
I like your hair, man. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:37
Well, our top team have now spent a whole day partaking in our | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
Body Talk experiments. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:47
But before we see how it's gone, | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
there's just one more thing we need them to do. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
One of the biggest problems is that we don't realise how critical | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
we're being about ourselves. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
We partake in self-bullying and we regularly beat ourselves up. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
Most of the time we don't even realise we're actually doing it. | 0:22:58 | 0:23:01
You know the kind of thing we mean. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
-Radzi, I feel so fat today. I look awful. -Fat? You look fine. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
-I'm the one that's skinny and puny. -As if. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
Have you seen the state of my little finger? It's not so little, is it? | 0:23:13 | 0:23:17
Your little finger? My hair is out of control at the moment. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:21
OK, guys. Behind me is our very own Big Brother Radzi room. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:26
What we want you to do, we've got a camera set up, | 0:23:26 | 0:23:28
we just want to hear about you, hear about how you're feeling. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
We want to hear a positive thing about how you're feeling, | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
and a positive piece about what you think you're looking like. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
I like that I'm funny and I like that I'm tall. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:40
I like how I'm quite sociable and I like my eyes. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:45
The one thing that is good about me is my hair. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
..is my muscularity and my supreme athleticism. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
I'm quite clever. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:53
I can make friends quite easily. And I also like my hair. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
I'm a good guy to hang out with. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
I like my smile and my athleticism. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:03
OK, guys. This is my Big Sister Melissa room. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
I like my eyebrows. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
I like my eyes and about myself, I can be a good friend. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:14
I'm good at athletics and I like my eyes. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:16
I'm considered a good singer. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:18
And I also like my hair. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:19
A good listener. And I like my nose. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:23
I'm a good dancer and I like my dimple. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:25
Well, we've almost come to the end of the school day. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
And our young group have filled out the same forms | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
that they filled out yesterday. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:39
But the question is, has two days of positive Body Talk helped to | 0:24:39 | 0:24:43
improve the teenagers' body image, and have they stopped body-bullying? | 0:24:43 | 0:24:47
Let's find out. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:48
Guys, yesterday on your body image survey scores, you got out of 160... | 0:24:51 | 0:24:55
77. | 0:24:55 | 0:24:57 | |
And we were looking to improve that. And today, you did. | 0:24:57 | 0:25:01
On your surveys, out of 160, you got 111! | 0:25:01 | 0:25:04

-Do you think you're going to be more positive from now on? -ALL: Yeah! | 0:25:09 | 0:25:13
Well, guys, it just goes to show that in two days we've started | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
to beat body image bullying. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
With the start of Bright Body Talk. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:20
It's the fastest and potentially the easiest way | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
