How often have you watched the news and seen disasters...

0:00:020:00:04

The sea rose up 20 feet, flooding the area.

0:00:040:00:06

..and tragedies?

0:00:060:00:07

The bomb exploded at about 3:10 this afternoon.

0:00:070:00:10

SIRENS

0:00:100:00:11

But what if you were caught up in the events?

0:00:110:00:13

GUNFIRE

0:00:130:00:14

I've been out there and checked. So many bodies and she's not there.

0:00:140:00:18

And now, inspired by your past,

0:00:180:00:19

you are on a mission to help someone today...

0:00:190:00:22

The support that we had after the fire was so tremendous,

0:00:220:00:26

you just want to do something for the people that helped us.

0:00:260:00:29

Hopefully, I'll be able to help him to achieve some of his goals.

0:00:290:00:33

..someone who has no idea that this life-changing gift is coming.

0:00:330:00:37

Oh, my days!

0:00:370:00:38

Why's there so many people outside?

0:00:380:00:39

Hiya, Paul.

0:00:390:00:41

CHEERING

0:00:410:00:42

We're here today to surprise somebody very special.

0:00:440:00:48

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:00:480:00:50

This is Going Back, Giving Back.

0:00:500:00:52

It's September 2003.

0:00:590:01:01

A group of ordinary Yorkshire women

0:01:010:01:03

find themselves thrust into the limelight.

0:01:030:01:06

-What do you make of the red-carpet treatment?

-Oh, amazing!

0:01:060:01:09

-Massive!

-I want one at home!

0:01:090:01:11

Stars overnight for the unlikeliest of reasons.

0:01:120:01:16

The middle-aged WI members had all posed for a calendar naked

0:01:160:01:20

to raise money for charity

0:01:200:01:22

after Miss February lost her husband to cancer.

0:01:220:01:25

Unimaginable success followed, leading to a blockbuster film,

0:01:260:01:30

a stage show and a West End musical.

0:01:300:01:32

The calendar has sold by the hundreds of thousands

0:01:320:01:35

and the girls, well, they are international media stars.

0:01:350:01:39

Now this extraordinary woman wants to help someone else

0:01:390:01:41

who's also suffered a terrible loss...

0:01:410:01:44

If I could help somebody who was in my position...

0:01:440:01:48

just a little bit, just give them a little bit back,

0:01:480:01:52

that would be fantastic.

0:01:520:01:53

..putting them centre stage to give them the gift of a lifetime.

0:01:530:01:57

-The minute they've done their first bow, we go on stage.

-Yeah, OK.

-OK?

0:01:570:02:00

-I'm ready for it.

-Look at you! OK, let's go.

0:02:000:02:02

CHEERING

0:02:040:02:07

TRAIN WHISTLE TOOTS

0:02:140:02:17

71-year-old Angela Knowles, formerly Baker,

0:02:180:02:21

lives in a quiet village in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

0:02:210:02:24

19 years ago, she lost her dear husband John to cancer.

0:02:240:02:28

His death triggered the fundraising calendar.

0:02:280:02:30

And I can't wait to meet Angela.

0:02:300:02:32

And get out of the rain!

0:02:320:02:34

DOORBELL CHIMES

0:02:350:02:36

-Hiya!

-Hello.

-How are you?

-I'm good.

0:02:390:02:41

-How are you?

-Good, thank you very much.

-In this lovely weather.

0:02:410:02:44

Proper Yorkshire weather, yeah?

0:02:440:02:46

We won't melt, I don't think.

0:02:460:02:48

I feel like I know you so well already,

0:02:500:02:51

-but I bet I'm not the first person to say that, am I?

-No, you're not.

0:02:510:02:54

But we're recognisable when we're in our black and sunflowers more,

0:02:540:02:58

but occasionally we get recognised now in the supermarket.

0:02:580:03:02

But Angela was never after fame.

0:03:030:03:05

The saucy calendar was dreamt up to raise money

0:03:050:03:07

for research into blood cancer, that killed her husband John.

0:03:070:03:11

You guys have raised so much money for charity.

0:03:110:03:14

Yeah, we have, yeah. Nearly £5 million.

0:03:140:03:17

Look at that smile on your face when you said that. I love it!

0:03:170:03:19

And when we raised the first million, I sat at this table,

0:03:190:03:24

just writing it all day with all those noughts at the end.

0:03:240:03:28

I could not believe that that's what we'd done.

0:03:280:03:30

But now we can put a five in front.

0:03:300:03:33

John was just 53 when he found out he had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

0:03:350:03:39

It's a cancer that affects the immune system.

0:03:390:03:42

He died just months after diagnosis.

0:03:430:03:45

It was such a shock, because he was such a healthy person.

0:03:450:03:49

Never had a day off work.

0:03:490:03:51

And we just couldn't believe it.

0:03:510:03:53

Angela was heartbroken.

0:03:550:03:57

The couple had been inseparable

0:03:570:03:58

since they'd met in their late teens.

0:03:580:04:01

Where would you be, do you think,

0:04:010:04:03

and what would have happened without the support of the girls?

0:04:030:04:05

Oh, I don't know.

0:04:050:04:06

I would have been in a much sadder place, I think,

0:04:060:04:09

if I hadn't had the girls and my friends and family.

0:04:090:04:13

Best friend and fellow WI member Trish would drop in all the time.

0:04:150:04:19

Trish used to come round and she'd bring her pyjamas and say,

0:04:200:04:24

"You know, I'm stopping tonight."

0:04:240:04:27

It was just great because I hated being on my own.

0:04:270:04:31

And they were just there, all the time.

0:04:310:04:34

After John died, I thought my world had come to an end.

0:04:340:04:37

But, you know, the girls got together and we did what we did,

0:04:370:04:41

never thinking what would happen.

0:04:410:04:44

Not in a million years.

0:04:440:04:46

You've raised so much for charity, as I say.

0:04:460:04:48

-But now, you want to help someone individually.

-Yes, I do.

0:04:480:04:51

I'd like to help someone in my position.

0:04:510:04:54

Well, in order for you to give back, I think we need to go back first.

0:04:540:04:57

I've got the car outside, so we're going to go on a little drive.

0:04:570:05:00

All right. Great. Sounds good. Are you a good driver?

0:05:000:05:03

We'll find out. Come on, let's go.

0:05:030:05:05

Angela's life has played out like a Hollywood movie.

0:05:080:05:11

But before we hear about that,

0:05:110:05:12

I want to find out a bit more about John.

0:05:120:05:14

So our first destination is a place that was very close to his heart.

0:05:140:05:18

Tell me a bit about John and how you first met, then.

0:05:190:05:22

-Because you were both very young, weren't you?

-Yes.

0:05:220:05:25

-I was 17 when I met John.

-Right.

0:05:250:05:27

I had the best job ever.

0:05:270:05:28

I worked in the students' union at Sheffield University

0:05:280:05:32

-and I ran the National Union of Students travel bureau.

-OK.

0:05:320:05:36

John came in one day with a group of friends to book a holiday

0:05:360:05:41

and I thought, "Oooh, he looks a bit of all right."

0:05:410:05:45

You should've been concentrating on your job.

0:05:450:05:48

And, of course, you know, he filled his application form in,

0:05:480:05:50

so I knew where he came from, what he was doing...

0:05:500:05:53

-And you were keen.

-Yeah, I was.

0:05:530:05:54

After a couple of meetings, John asked Angela out,

0:05:560:05:59

having heard she had free tickets to a student dance.

0:05:590:06:03

John phoned up at 4:55 and said,

0:06:030:06:06

"I hear you're going to the dance tonight. Can I take you?"

0:06:060:06:10

Oh...

0:06:100:06:11

He was a bit of a Yorkshireman,

0:06:110:06:12

because he knew I'd got free tickets!

0:06:120:06:15

ALED LAUGHS

0:06:150:06:16

So that was the reason, then, OK.

0:06:160:06:18

So, anyway, yes. So...

0:06:180:06:20

And that was that.

0:06:200:06:21

A year later, we got engaged on graduation day.

0:06:230:06:28

-Gosh.

-And a year after that, we were married.

0:06:280:06:31

Angela and John's wedding was in 1966 at her local church.

0:06:340:06:38

Two years after their big day, their first child Rachel was born.

0:06:380:06:42

And their second, Matthew, came in 1971.

0:06:420:06:45

They were extremely happy.

0:06:450:06:47

What was so special about him?

0:06:490:06:51

-Well, he was good-looking.

-Yeah.

0:06:510:06:54

And he had a lovely smile.

0:06:540:06:55

-And he was quite shy.

-Right.

0:06:570:06:59

You know, it was just one of those things,

0:06:590:07:02

kind of love at first sight and you just click.

0:07:020:07:05

He very much was your soul mate, wasn't he?

0:07:050:07:06

He was my soul mate, yeah. He really was my soul mate, yeah.

0:07:060:07:10

It was good. Life was good.

0:07:100:07:13

-Well, you've guessed where we are now.

-Yes.

0:07:160:07:19

This is a place where...

0:07:190:07:20

-Lots of memories.

-Lots of memories.

-Mm-hm.

0:07:200:07:23

We're at the Dales Countryside Museum.

0:07:250:07:27

An assistant National Park officer for 24 years,

0:07:270:07:31

John was passionate about the Dales.

0:07:310:07:33

The last project he undertook

0:07:330:07:34

was converting this disused railway station

0:07:340:07:36

into a museum for the area.

0:07:360:07:39

This is one of the places that I managed to bring John

0:07:400:07:43

when he was really, really poorly,

0:07:430:07:45

because he was desperate to see them starting the alterations.

0:07:450:07:50

-Well, this was his place, wasn't it?

-It was his place.

0:07:500:07:54

-So, yeah, his place.

-Yeah.

0:07:540:07:56

The museum documents the Dales' past,

0:07:560:07:59

focusing on the 19th and 20th century.

0:07:590:08:01

-You know this person.

-I do know this person.

0:08:020:08:03

The museum manager is Fiona Rocher. She used to work with John.

0:08:030:08:08

-I usually come when you're not here.

-That's right.

0:08:080:08:10

How are you? Nice to see you.

0:08:100:08:12

Thanks so much for being here, showing us around.

0:08:120:08:14

That's all right. You're very welcome.

0:08:140:08:16

So we've come to a building that means a great deal to you.

0:08:180:08:21

Yeah. We have.

0:08:210:08:23

The John Richard Baker exhibition hall.

0:08:230:08:26

-It's just wonderful.

-Isn't it just?

-Mm-hm.

0:08:260:08:29

"A man who loved the Dales,

0:08:290:08:30

"striving to sustain their natural beauty for future generations."

0:08:300:08:34

John was highly regarded by his colleagues,

0:08:340:08:37

always pushing himself and others to deliver the best for the Dales.

0:08:370:08:41

-What was John like to work with?

-He was really enthusiastic.

0:08:410:08:45

Good fun to work with,

0:08:450:08:47

but very determined in everything that he was doing.

0:08:470:08:50

And he had a huge passion for the Dales

0:08:500:08:52

and a passion for this project.

0:08:520:08:53

Only 54 when he died, John still had so much to live for.

0:08:560:08:59

-It all happened so quickly, though, didn't it?

-Yeah. It did.

0:09:000:09:03

In the grand scheme of things.

0:09:030:09:05

-Because he was such a fit man, wasn't he?

-He was, yeah.

0:09:050:09:07

And then suddenly, bang!

0:09:070:09:09

And it was, you know, diagnosed, massive operation

0:09:090:09:14

and then...

0:09:140:09:15

..they tried chemo, four lots, and it didn't work.

0:09:170:09:21

-And it was how many...?

-Five months altogether.

0:09:210:09:24

-Five months altogether?

-Yeah.

0:09:240:09:26

-And if anyone tried hard to get better, he did.

-Mm.

0:09:300:09:35

Really, really tried hard.

0:09:350:09:37

And thought that he would, really.

0:09:370:09:39

Cos he was so positive right to the very last day.

0:09:390:09:42

How do you feel when you're here?

0:09:420:09:45

Erm...I try not to cry.

0:09:450:09:47

But really proud.

0:09:500:09:51

-Yeah.

-Really proud.

0:09:510:09:53

-This is his legacy.

-Yeah.

0:09:530:09:56

-It is.

-It's pretty impressive.

0:09:560:09:58

-It is.

-Yeah.

0:09:580:09:59

But to have this room named after him is very special.

0:09:590:10:04

He's here.

0:10:060:10:07

He's here. He was a huge supporter, wasn't he?

0:10:070:10:10

He's here.

0:10:100:10:12

It's interesting, isn't it, you know, through his work,

0:10:150:10:18

-getting people to know about the Dales and your work...?

-Yeah.

0:10:180:10:21

Between the both of you,

0:10:210:10:23

-you've brought a lot of people to the Dales.

-Well, yes.

0:10:230:10:26

Calendar Girl country.

0:10:260:10:28

I don't know what... I think he'd approve of it.

0:10:280:10:31

Yes.

0:10:330:10:35

We're now going back to the day

0:10:360:10:38

Angela and her WI friends thought might cause a stir in the village.

0:10:380:10:42

But instead, it caused a frenzy all over the country.

0:10:420:10:45

We'll have a little test now, then, OK?

0:10:460:10:48

-Miss February?

-Me.

-Yeah.

0:10:480:10:50

I knew you'd know that one.

0:10:500:10:52

-Miss November?

-Ross.

-Yeah.

0:10:520:10:54

-Trish was Miss October.

-Yeah.

0:10:540:10:57

Chris was Miss September, with her buns.

0:10:570:10:59

-That was a funny one.

-Teapot and buns.

0:11:010:11:03

The 11 women who dared to bare

0:11:050:11:07

were all members of the Rylstone and District WI.

0:11:070:11:10

The Women's Institute was set up in 1915

0:11:100:11:13

to help rural communities grow their own food in World War I.

0:11:130:11:17

Since then, it's become the largest

0:11:170:11:19

women's voluntary organisation in the UK.

0:11:190:11:21

We help each other, we learn from each other,

0:11:240:11:26

we enjoy being together.

0:11:260:11:27

In 1974, Angela joined.

0:11:270:11:29

And she's never looked back, making lifelong friends,

0:11:290:11:31

including best mate Trish.

0:11:310:11:33

So they do a national WI calendar.

0:11:340:11:37

And they ask for...

0:11:370:11:38

It's always on a theme.

0:11:380:11:40

So a nice picture of a sunset or a village green or whatever.

0:11:400:11:44

And this particular year they were asking and Trish just nudged me

0:11:450:11:49

-and said, "You know, we could do our own calendar."

-Yeah.

0:11:490:11:52

"We could do it depicting the crafts of the WI,

0:11:520:11:55

"but Pirelli style."

0:11:550:11:58

Yeah.

0:11:580:11:59

And I just looked at her and said, "As if we'd do that!"

0:11:590:12:03

We had a very funny half-hour saying what craft we'd be.

0:12:030:12:06

But we never did anything about it.

0:12:060:12:09

We just talked about it for ages.

0:12:090:12:11

Until John was ill and he was in hospital.

0:12:120:12:15

And one day, all the girls were there.

0:12:150:12:19

-And we were telling him, you know, "We're going to do this."

-Yeah.

0:12:190:12:23

And he said, "You'll never do that. You're just all talk."

0:12:230:12:27

-But you see...

-Red rag to a bull.

0:12:290:12:31

Yeah.

0:12:310:12:32

-Feisty Yorkshire ladies.

-Yeah.

0:12:320:12:34

Three months after John died in 1998,

0:12:340:12:37

Trish suggested they did the calendar

0:12:370:12:39

to take Angela's mind off things,

0:12:390:12:41

as much as raising money for blood cancer,

0:12:410:12:43

which is the third-biggest cancer killer in the UK.

0:12:430:12:46

The night was set.

0:12:460:12:47

We went with our dressing gowns, slippers and a bottle of red wine.

0:12:470:12:51

It's great, isn't it? You couldn't make it up, could you?

0:12:510:12:54

Angela and Trish recruited nine other volunteers, all WI members.

0:12:540:12:59

Local artist Terry Logan, the husband of one of the ladies, Linda,

0:12:590:13:02

volunteered to take the pictures.

0:13:020:13:04

And Linda had the fire stoked up so we wouldn't get cold

0:13:070:13:11

and all the curtains closed and the door locked, you know,

0:13:110:13:15

-in case one of the neighbours popped in.

-Yeah.

0:13:150:13:17

Was there a lot of nerves or a lot of laughter?

0:13:170:13:19

A lot of laughter. A lot of laughter and...

0:13:190:13:23

Just what you needed.

0:13:230:13:24

Yeah, just what I needed. And...

0:13:240:13:26

You know, I'd gone and I didn't take any pearls or anything,

0:13:280:13:31

I just wore whatever there was.

0:13:310:13:33

And took my clothes off and they just said,

0:13:330:13:36

because I could play the piano, they just said, "Sit here.

0:13:360:13:39

-"Play Jerusalem."

-Brilliant.

0:13:390:13:42

So you've finally guessed where we're going now?

0:13:470:13:50

Probably, we're going to Cracoe.

0:13:500:13:52

Could be.

0:13:520:13:54

-Probably the pub.

-Could be.

0:13:550:13:57

Cracoe is a village in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

0:13:580:14:01

It's where Angela and John had their family home.

0:14:010:14:03

It's also where the calendar was created.

0:14:030:14:06

-So you guessed right.

-Yes.

0:14:070:14:09

-What's the pub in the village?

-The Devonshire Arms in Cracoe.

0:14:090:14:13

-Shall we head in?

-Yeah.

0:14:130:14:15

-No point standing out in the rain.

-No.

0:14:150:14:17

When Angela and her friends printed the calendar,

0:14:190:14:21

they arranged a launch.

0:14:210:14:23

They only expected a few friends to turn up.

0:14:230:14:26

Even in their wildest dreams,

0:14:260:14:27

they couldn't have imagined what was going to happen.

0:14:270:14:30

The WI women were about to go global.

0:14:300:14:33

This is the room where we launched our calendar.

0:14:340:14:36

What was that like, that day?

0:14:360:14:38

Well, that morning, I woke up to Sarah Kennedy talking about us.

0:14:380:14:42

-On Radio 2?

-Yeah. And then Terry Wogan.

0:14:420:14:45

And then I thought, "Oh, my goodness."

0:14:450:14:47

And then I rang Trish and I said, "Everyone's talking about us."

0:14:470:14:50

She said, "You want to see the pub car park.

0:14:500:14:53

"It's full of white vans with satellite dishes on the top."

0:14:530:14:56

A simple press release had caught the eye and imagination

0:15:010:15:03

of news editors all over the country.

0:15:030:15:06

It's called the Alternative WI Calendar.

0:15:060:15:09

It features 11 members of Rylstone and District WI.

0:15:090:15:12

The UK's media were desperate to see the middle-aged women,

0:15:120:15:16

who were taking their clothes off for a risque WI calendar.

0:15:160:15:19

-What went through your mind?

-"Oh, what have we done?"

0:15:190:15:22

I thought, "What have we done?"

0:15:220:15:24

By lunchtime, we were on the local BBC.

0:15:240:15:28

And at evening, we were on the six o'clock BBC News.

0:15:280:15:32

-Goodness me.

-It was just incredible.

0:15:320:15:34

What was the atmosphere like in this room?

0:15:340:15:36

Well, everybody was just so excited.

0:15:360:15:38

You know, and it's not what they expected.

0:15:380:15:41

-Shall we get into the car?

-Yes, let's go.

0:15:420:15:43

By the end of 1999, eight months after it was first launched,

0:15:590:16:03

88,000 copies of the calendar had been sold in the UK.

0:16:030:16:07

The WI friends had become household names.

0:16:070:16:09

Voted women of the year, they even went to Buckingham Palace

0:16:090:16:12

to present copies to Her Majesty the Queen and the Queen Mother.

0:16:120:16:16

Our last stop is Kettlewell,

0:16:180:16:20

the setting for the blockbuster hit Calendar Girls,

0:16:200:16:22

the movie based on Angela's powerful story.

0:16:220:16:25

-Shall we go and have a little sit down?

-Yeah, let's.

0:16:260:16:28

The year after the calendar was launched in the UK,

0:16:300:16:32

it was released in America.

0:16:320:16:34

240,000 copies were sold.

0:16:340:16:36

The women had become international stars.

0:16:360:16:39

I was getting phone calls from Hollywood.

0:16:400:16:43

Which sounds wonderful, but it's quite scary,

0:16:430:16:46

when you've no idea, you know, how to cope with it.

0:16:460:16:49

Studios were fighting over Angela's story.

0:16:500:16:53

Eventually, she, along with five of her WI friends,

0:16:530:16:55

agreed to have a film made

0:16:550:16:57

but set strict terms.

0:16:570:16:59

A percentage of the profits had to go to Bloodwise,

0:16:590:17:02

the blood cancer charity they supported.

0:17:020:17:04

It also had to be set in the Dales with an all-British cast.

0:17:040:17:07

Angela, an ordinary woman from Yorkshire,

0:17:070:17:10

was about to get a phone call that dreams are made of.

0:17:100:17:13

An A-list film star was to play her in the movie.

0:17:130:17:17

The phone went one day and I answered the phone

0:17:170:17:19

and this person said, "Hello, Angela, it's Julie here."

0:17:190:17:22

And I went, "Julie? Do I know a Julie?"

0:17:220:17:25

I said, "I'm sorry?"

0:17:250:17:26

And she said, "It's Julie Walters."

0:17:260:17:29

Well, I nearly stood to attention.

0:17:290:17:31

She said, "What are you doing on Thursday?"

0:17:330:17:35

Well, if I'd been doing anything, I would have cancelled it, wouldn't I?

0:17:350:17:37

-Of course you would have.

-And she said she'd like to come and meet us.

0:17:370:17:42

And I baked scones for them.

0:17:420:17:44

-But I didn't do it for you, honey.

-No, thanks for reinforcing that fact.

0:17:440:17:47

Yeah, lovely. Cheers!

0:17:470:17:49

But then, after Julie came, they all came.

0:17:490:17:54

And they were just like friends.

0:17:540:17:56

Julie Walters played Angela,

0:17:570:17:59

whilst Helen Mirren took on the role of Trish.

0:17:590:18:01

The delightfully funny film was released in 2003

0:18:010:18:04

and was an instant hit.

0:18:040:18:07

Off!

0:18:080:18:09

Off! Off!

0:18:090:18:12

Off! Off! Off!

0:18:120:18:15

Off!

0:18:150:18:16

For months, the girls travelled the world promoting the film

0:18:230:18:26

and their charity.

0:18:260:18:28

Everywhere they went, they wore a sunflower

0:18:280:18:30

in memory of Angela's husband John.

0:18:300:18:33

Look where the ladies of the Women's Institute have been tonight.

0:18:330:18:37

A world premiere with red-carpet treatment.

0:18:370:18:39

We don't think we're stars. We just dip in and out of this.

0:18:390:18:42

We don't think this is our lives.

0:18:420:18:43

This is something we do now and then

0:18:430:18:45

and then we go back home and that's where we want to be.

0:18:450:18:47

I mean, we still do the washing on a Monday

0:18:470:18:49

and the ironing on a Tuesday and we have to go to the supermarket

0:18:490:18:52

and no-one kind of makes a fuss of us. And it's good.

0:18:520:18:55

We thought, after the film, there couldn't be anything else.

0:19:000:19:04

And then there was the stage play.

0:19:040:19:06

-And then we thought, "That must be it."

-Yeah.

0:19:060:19:09

-And then, David Pugh came and said...

-He's the producer, yeah?

0:19:090:19:13

Yeah, the producer of the stage play, as well.

0:19:130:19:16

..that Tim Firth and Gary Barlow had been writing a musical.

0:19:160:19:20

Well, what do you say?

0:19:220:19:23

Heavens...

0:19:230:19:25

But do you know what the great thing about it is?

0:19:250:19:27

As you say, the reason you did it in the first place is to raise money.

0:19:270:19:31

And you've raised how much?

0:19:310:19:32

-Nearly five million.

-Nearly five million.

0:19:320:19:34

And the amount of hearts that you've touched along the way.

0:19:340:19:38

-Yeah.

-Incredible.

0:19:380:19:39

Including this one today, I've got to say.

0:19:390:19:41

I've so enjoyed taking you back, I really have.

0:19:410:19:43

And has doing all this, you know, all the places we've been,

0:19:430:19:46

-has it made you want to help someone even more?

-Yes.

0:19:460:19:49

That would be really good.

0:19:490:19:51

If I could help somebody who was in my position, just a little bit,

0:19:510:19:56

just give them a little bit back, that would be fantastic.

0:19:560:20:00

Well, listen, I'll see you in a week or so.

0:20:000:20:02

-And thank you for everything.

-It's all right.

0:20:020:20:05

-It's been great seeing you.

-And great to see you.

0:20:050:20:07

And I forgive you for not baking me a cake.

0:20:070:20:09

-Just about!

-Next time.

0:20:090:20:11

Oh, yeah, promises, promises!

0:20:110:20:13

Wow, what an inspirational day.

0:20:180:20:20

I've thoroughly enjoyed meeting Angela. She's such a ray of light.

0:20:200:20:24

And, you know, what she and her fellow Calendar Girls achieved

0:20:240:20:26

is astounding.

0:20:260:20:28

They are life-savers through the money that they raised

0:20:280:20:30

for their charity.

0:20:300:20:31

And taking Angela back on this journey into her past

0:20:310:20:34

has been moving.

0:20:340:20:35

But it's also focused her mind to really want to help someone today,

0:20:350:20:38

someone who's in a similar position to the one she was in 18 years ago,

0:20:380:20:42

when she had the support of her friends.

0:20:420:20:44

And we think we've found somebody who really fits the bill.

0:20:440:20:48

Katie Moore lives in Hampton, Middlesex,

0:20:520:20:55

with her son Archie, who's five.

0:20:550:20:57

Three years ago,

0:20:570:20:59

Katie lost her husband and soul mate Tom to leukaemia.

0:20:590:21:02

He was just 35.

0:21:020:21:03

Angela is about to meet Katie for the first time

0:21:030:21:06

to see if there's a way she can help her.

0:21:060:21:08

I'm expecting to learn lots about Katie.

0:21:120:21:15

I think, once we get chatting to each other,

0:21:150:21:18

we'll probably find out that we've got a lot of things in common.

0:21:180:21:22

So it'll be good, I think.

0:21:220:21:24

I've never been short of a conversation.

0:21:240:21:26

Katie believes we're making a programme

0:21:280:21:30

about losing a loved one to cancer.

0:21:300:21:32

She's completely in the dark

0:21:320:21:34

that she might be in line for a generous gift from Angela.

0:21:340:21:37

Lovely to see you. Can I come in? Thank you.

0:21:370:21:39

-This way?

-Yes, straight through.

-Thank you.

0:21:420:21:44

It's really nice to meet you. You have a story to tell.

0:21:460:21:49

And I have a story to tell.

0:21:490:21:52

-So I think...

-Unfortunately.

-That's why we got together.

0:21:520:21:55

So you tell me how you met.

0:21:550:21:57

Tom and I were on the same course,

0:21:570:21:59

so we both did sports studies with business.

0:21:590:22:02

And a very long story short,

0:22:020:22:03

we got together towards the end of our final year.

0:22:030:22:08

And obviously, we were together until he passed away at 35.

0:22:080:22:11

-35...

-Mm.

0:22:110:22:13

That's very early.

0:22:130:22:14

Katie and Tom were studying at Southampton University

0:22:150:22:18

in the late '90s.

0:22:180:22:20

They married in 2010.

0:22:200:22:22

A year later, they had baby Archie.

0:22:220:22:24

Just like Angela's John, Tom was seemingly fit and healthy.

0:22:260:22:29

He loved sport, playing football every week.

0:22:290:22:32

He'd also landed his dream job working for the Premier League.

0:22:320:22:36

But in August 2013, he started complaining of feeling ill.

0:22:360:22:40

He was always getting the flu. He would have night sweats.

0:22:400:22:43

He would be coughing.

0:22:430:22:45

-Probably very similar to what you witnessed.

-Yeah.

0:22:450:22:48

The GP was just giving him antibiotics

0:22:480:22:51

or telling him to go home and rest.

0:22:510:22:54

So I called a private GP and I got him a blood test.

0:22:540:22:58

We took the blood tests.

0:22:580:22:59

I absolutely didn't think it would be what it was.

0:22:590:23:02

And I got a call from the GP to say could I bring Tom in.

0:23:020:23:07

And when the word "leukaemia" came out of her mouth, I...

0:23:070:23:11

-I don't know, just glass shattered.

-Mm.

0:23:130:23:16

He was in pieces.

0:23:170:23:19

I was in a sheer panic. I just thought, "You've got this wrong.

0:23:190:23:22

"You've absolutely got this wrong."

0:23:220:23:24

Tom was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, or AML,

0:23:270:23:30

an aggressive form of blood cancer requiring immediate treatment.

0:23:300:23:34

Two days before his 35th birthday, he started chemo.

0:23:350:23:38

And you're in hospital for four weeks

0:23:380:23:40

and then he was allowed home for a week.

0:23:400:23:42

And then it would happen again and again.

0:23:420:23:45

And we were positive and we just thought we'd get through it.

0:23:450:23:48

Tom underwent gruelling chemo.

0:23:480:23:50

After three rounds, he was approved for stem cell treatment.

0:23:500:23:53

A donor had been found. It looked as if he was going to recover.

0:23:530:23:57

But then, after a blood test, his consultant called.

0:23:570:24:01

He said, "Can I speak to Tom? Because we've seen

0:24:010:24:05

-"irregular cells in his blood."

-Yeah.

0:24:050:24:08

And basically, he'd relapsed.

0:24:080:24:11

And he then underwent his fourth chemo.

0:24:110:24:14

And then he caught an infection.

0:24:140:24:16

And...

0:24:170:24:19

..he went to intensive care.

0:24:200:24:22

And in intensive care, Tom just deteriorated and deteriorated.

0:24:220:24:27

Eventually, I got told that...

0:24:280:24:30

..Tom wasn't going to make it.

0:24:310:24:32

So how long had he had it? How...?

0:24:360:24:39

-Five months.

-Five months?

-Yeah.

0:24:390:24:42

Because it's so similar, you know?

0:24:420:24:45

-He had the night sweats. We thought he had flu.

-Yeah.

0:24:450:24:48

And he had four lots of chemo, too.

0:24:480:24:51

But then, eventually, erm...

0:24:510:24:53

..it went into his brain.

0:24:540:24:57

And he couldn't stand up, he couldn't walk.

0:24:570:25:02

And the consultant said, probably, he would never have walked again.

0:25:020:25:07

And John heard that and he just said he'd had enough.

0:25:070:25:11

He didn't want anything else.

0:25:110:25:14

And that's it.

0:25:160:25:18

-So we've got a lot in common.

-Yeah, we have.

0:25:210:25:24

Five months.

0:25:240:25:26

So quick from being...

0:25:260:25:28

well.

0:25:280:25:30

-And...hard to take.

-Yeah.

0:25:300:25:32

While Angela is with Katie,

0:25:340:25:36

I've arranged to meet one of Katie's best friends - Debbie.

0:25:360:25:39

-Hi. How are you?

-Come in.

0:25:410:25:42

-Nice to meet you.

-Nice to meet you.

0:25:420:25:44

-Please, come in.

-Thanks.

0:25:440:25:45

I'll take my coat off.

0:25:450:25:47

It must have been awful for you as a friend seeing her go through that.

0:25:500:25:52

It was terrible, because her and Tom were just one of these couples

0:25:520:25:56

that we had up on a pedestal.

0:25:560:25:58

He just was a very well-rounded, thoughtful and kind man.

0:25:580:26:01

Just gave her what she needed.

0:26:010:26:03

They were thinking about another child.

0:26:030:26:05

When we got the news that he had died, it was just...

0:26:050:26:08

a kind of punch to the stomach for all of us.

0:26:080:26:11

-You don't expect it, do you?

-Not at that age, no.

0:26:110:26:15

She'd sent us all a message saying, "My angel has gone."

0:26:150:26:18

And she didn't say any more than that.

0:26:180:26:21

It's just so unexpected in life.

0:26:280:26:31

And I just remember that day, we went round the day after he died.

0:26:310:26:35

And just going into the room she was in

0:26:350:26:37

and she was under the covers and just broken.

0:26:370:26:41

And just having to hold her was just...

0:26:410:26:44

It was really sad.

0:26:440:26:46

How has she been since then, then?

0:26:460:26:49

-Sorry...

-No, it's OK. It's obviously still raw, isn't it?

0:26:490:26:52

-You know?

-Yeah.

0:26:520:26:54

She's been amazing.

0:26:540:26:56

-She's strong, isn't she?

-Yeah.

0:26:570:26:59

Just...

0:26:590:27:01

-I'm so proud of her.

-Yeah.

0:27:010:27:03

I think the first year of Tom passing away was a complete blur.

0:27:090:27:12

And I even look back and think, "What did I do in that first year?"

0:27:120:27:16

I absolutely don't know how I got through it.

0:27:160:27:19

And the hardest thing was when...

0:27:200:27:22

I mean, yes, I was busy

0:27:220:27:24

and we were here, there and everywhere

0:27:240:27:26

doing everything with the calendar and the film,

0:27:260:27:29

but, you know, the other girls, when we'd gone anywhere,

0:27:290:27:33

-we were on a train and all their husbands met them.

-Yeah.

0:27:330:27:36

Yeah, I've been there.

0:27:370:27:39

-You know, and you just get off and you know there's no-one there.

-Yeah.

0:27:390:27:42

As well as dealing with her grief,

0:27:460:27:49

Katie was left trying to do the best by little Archie,

0:27:490:27:51

just a toddler at the time he lost his dad.

0:27:510:27:54

She's had to be strong for the both of them.

0:27:540:27:57

-Archie was two when Tom passed away.

-Mm-hm.

0:27:580:28:02

So he doesn't really remember his daddy.

0:28:020:28:05

Obviously, we have pictures and we do talk about him all the time.

0:28:050:28:07

It would have been hard on your own, coping with that and a small child.

0:28:090:28:15

I can't imagine what it was like.

0:28:150:28:17

It is hard. It's hard just juggling everything.

0:28:170:28:19

Like Angela,

0:28:250:28:26

Katie's had a huge amount of support from close friends.

0:28:260:28:29

Debbie was on maternity leave when Tom died.

0:28:290:28:32

She would drive two hours across London every day

0:28:320:28:34

to be there for Katie.

0:28:340:28:35

She knew there was a group of us and we were on the phone

0:28:350:28:38

and we were there for her, no matter what.

0:28:380:28:41

You're a very close unit. All of you, you're friends.

0:28:410:28:44

We have been friends for a long time,

0:28:440:28:46

some of us since the age of five.

0:28:460:28:47

There's so many parallels between your story

0:28:470:28:49

and that of the Calendar Girls, as well, and Angela.

0:28:490:28:52

Katie works in fashion, an industry she loves.

0:28:540:28:57

But since Tom died,

0:28:570:28:58

she's had to juggle her career to look after Archie.

0:28:580:29:01

While she takes a break from full-time working, just like Angela,

0:29:010:29:04

she'd like to raise money for blood cancer research

0:29:040:29:07

and also for young widows.

0:29:070:29:09

I would love to do something.

0:29:090:29:11

I've done a half-marathon. We have raised money for Bloodwise.

0:29:110:29:15

But it's now how to take that forward and what else to do.

0:29:150:29:18

It will happen, I'm sure.

0:29:180:29:20

Angela is trying to think if there is a way she might help Katie.

0:29:210:29:25

But first, she's planned a little treat.

0:29:250:29:28

-Katie, you've been told that you've got to be free tomorrow.

-Yes.

0:29:280:29:32

You're going to have some very good friends

0:29:320:29:34

that are going to come and join you.

0:29:340:29:36

And you're going into the West End...

0:29:360:29:39

and you're going to see The Girls musical.

0:29:390:29:44

Oh, my gosh!

0:29:450:29:46

-Your show?

-Yes.

0:29:470:29:49

Oh, my gosh! That's amazing!

0:29:490:29:51

Thank you. That's... That's so sweet.

0:29:510:29:53

It's a pleasure. It's a pleasure.

0:29:530:29:56

Not only will Katie get to see the show,

0:29:570:29:59

but Angela is hatching a plan to surprise her at the theatre

0:29:590:30:02

with an even bigger gift...

0:30:020:30:04

She's going to be, erm...

0:30:040:30:06

excited or angry?

0:30:060:30:08

-She's got a tendency to be a bit cross sometimes.

-Oh, no!

-So...

0:30:090:30:12

No, I think she'll be excited

0:30:120:30:14

and it will just be quite overwhelming for her

0:30:140:30:17

to take it all in,

0:30:170:30:18

-because she doesn't feel she deserves anything special.

-No.

0:30:180:30:21

Which is exactly why she deserves something special.

0:30:210:30:23

-Well, she's going to get something special.

-I know. It's amazing.

0:30:230:30:26

Hey, listen, I'll leave you to it.

0:30:260:30:28

Next time I see you will be, erm...

0:30:280:30:31

-in a busy theatre.

-Yeah. Oh, God...

-I'm not sure who's more nervous.

0:30:310:30:34

-Anyway, thanks for talking to me.

-Thank you.

0:30:340:30:36

Our stories were so similar.

0:30:400:30:43

They really were.

0:30:430:30:44

And, yeah, it was...

0:30:440:30:46

I didn't think they'd be so similar. But it was amazing, yeah.

0:30:460:30:51

And we both...

0:30:510:30:52

felt, you know?

0:30:520:30:54

You just feel what you went through and what it was like.

0:30:540:30:57

And it was good to talk about it.

0:30:570:30:59

I would love to be able to support her

0:30:590:31:01

and I feel sure that I will be able to.

0:31:010:31:04

To help Angela work out how she can give something back to Katie,

0:31:080:31:12

she's asked her best friend Trish to London.

0:31:120:31:14

She's the perfect person for advice.

0:31:140:31:17

After all, the famous fundraising calendar was all her idea.

0:31:170:31:20

-Hello, you.

-Hello.

0:31:220:31:23

Fancy seeing you here! Are you all right?

0:31:230:31:26

Well, you know what I've been up to?

0:31:260:31:29

Well, vaguely.

0:31:290:31:30

Yeah, well, I went to meet this girl yesterday called Katie,

0:31:300:31:36

who's only 35,

0:31:360:31:38

who's got the same story as mine, really.

0:31:380:31:41

She met her husband at university.

0:31:410:31:44

-She's got a little boy.

-How old?

0:31:450:31:48

He's five now. Nearly five, yeah.

0:31:480:31:51

And Tom, her husband, gorgeous- looking, you know, and so happy.

0:31:510:31:58

And he was diagnosed with leukaemia.

0:31:580:32:02

And he died after five months.

0:32:020:32:06

-Just like John.

-Yeah.

0:32:060:32:07

-She's really young to be widowed, isn't she?

-Yeah.

0:32:070:32:10

How many years is it since he died?

0:32:100:32:13

I think it's three.

0:32:130:32:15

Angela is wondering if she can help Katie achieve her dream

0:32:150:32:19

of raising a substantial amount of money for blood cancer in Tom's name

0:32:190:32:23

and help young women who've lost a partner.

0:32:230:32:26

You know, we're so similar in so many ways, because, you know,

0:32:260:32:29

just like me, I had you and all the other girls.

0:32:290:32:34

-And we were always so focused, weren't we...

-Mm.

0:32:340:32:36

..on doing this calendar?

0:32:360:32:38

-And not really knowing what was going to happen to us.

-No, no.

0:32:380:32:43

And also, like for me, with the calendar and everything,

0:32:430:32:46

-you feel as though you are doing something so positive.

-Yeah.

0:32:460:32:50

Yeah, even though it's hard to do, it was something positive,

0:32:500:32:54

-and in John's memory.

-Yeah.

0:32:540:32:55

And he would have been proud.

0:32:550:32:57

And I'm sure her husband would be proud of her...

0:32:570:32:59

Yes, that's what I said.

0:32:590:33:01

-..to know that you've got up and done something...

-Yeah.

0:33:010:33:04

..and perhaps helped a lot of other people.

0:33:040:33:06

-Like our money will have. Like the research has.

-Yeah.

0:33:060:33:09

-So, yeah, it's a really good thing.

-Yeah.

0:33:090:33:12

Trish has reaffirmed Angela's decision to give something back.

0:33:140:33:18

And she thinks she might have found a way to help Katie.

0:33:180:33:21

I'm on my way to meet Angela.

0:33:240:33:26

I'm really looking forward to catching up with her again.

0:33:260:33:28

I'm also excited to hear how her meeting with Katie went.

0:33:280:33:31

I reckon Angela is the right person to help Katie.

0:33:310:33:34

The million-dollar question is...how.

0:33:340:33:36

Angela's waiting for me just around the corner

0:33:370:33:39

from where the musical of her story is playing in London's Theatreland.

0:33:390:33:43

Katie and her friends are on their way to see the show,

0:33:440:33:46

so time to find out exactly what Angela's got planned.

0:33:460:33:50

Thanks so much for meeting up with me. I know you've met Katie.

0:33:530:33:56

-How did it go?

-She's amazing.

0:33:560:33:59

And we really got on well.

0:33:590:34:01

Because I met her friend.

0:34:010:34:03

And one of her best friends was saying that, you know,

0:34:030:34:05

explained, of course, what she's gone through,

0:34:050:34:07

which is absolutely horrendous.

0:34:070:34:09

But also, you know, I thought of you instantly,

0:34:090:34:11

because she's got this close set of friends

0:34:110:34:13

-that have really helped her through it.

-Yeah.

0:34:130:34:15

-We were so similar in so many things.

-Oh, really?

0:34:150:34:18

The friends, you know, helped.

0:34:180:34:20

And then Tom was only ill, you know, after being a very fit guy,

0:34:200:34:24

for five months. Like John.

0:34:240:34:26

So we had so much in common to talk about

0:34:260:34:29

and how we felt and everything.

0:34:290:34:31

So how are you going to help?

0:34:310:34:33

Well, her job has been in fashion.

0:34:330:34:36

-And she had thought about doing a fashion show in memory of Tom.

-OK.

0:34:370:34:44

-And Bloodwise are going to help her do that.

-Oh, wow!

0:34:440:34:47

And maybe get some celebrities, as well, along the way.

0:34:470:34:51

-Oh, so a massive...?

-Yeah, quite a big one.

0:34:510:34:53

The charity Angela supports raises money for blood cancer research.

0:34:540:34:59

They're going to organise a fashion show with Katie

0:34:590:35:01

in honour of her husband.

0:35:010:35:03

They've also offered to make Katie an ambassador

0:35:030:35:05

and she's going to meet the CEO to discuss

0:35:050:35:08

how they can best help young widows.

0:35:080:35:11

So it's just brilliant.

0:35:110:35:12

-So she'll be working with a whole team?

-Yeah, it couldn't be better.

0:35:120:35:14

And me, as well. I'm going to help her. And the other Calendar Girls.

0:35:140:35:18

-Oh, really?

-So we're going to be like mentors for her.

0:35:180:35:21

-Oh, that's amazing.

-So, it's good.

0:35:210:35:23

You know, I'm hoping it's going to give her something to focus on.

0:35:230:35:26

Something to work for.

0:35:260:35:27

And feel in a real good... feel good for herself.

0:35:270:35:31

Talking to her friends, that's exactly what she needed, really.

0:35:310:35:34

Yeah, yeah.

0:35:340:35:35

Well, combining both her passions,

0:35:350:35:37

-the fashion and also the charity work.

-Yeah.

0:35:370:35:41

-Oh, fantastic.

-So I'm sure she'll love it.

0:35:410:35:43

-Have you put all your thoughts down in a letter?

-I have.

-Right, OK.

0:35:430:35:46

-So the musical starts a little bit later.

-Yes.

0:35:460:35:50

I reckon, at the end of the musical,

0:35:500:35:52

-we should go on stage and surprise her. What do you think?

-Yeah.

0:35:520:35:54

Yeah!

0:35:540:35:56

-Are you nervous about that?

-I am.

0:35:560:35:57

But I think she'll be up for it. I really do, yes.

0:35:570:36:00

-Oh, I'm excited. This is going to be a good one.

-Yes.

0:36:000:36:02

The stage is set, as Katie and her best friends Debbie and Alexia

0:36:050:36:09

arrive in London's West End to see the musical.

0:36:090:36:11

As they settle down for the show,

0:36:150:36:17

Katie still thinks we're filming her for Angela's treat.

0:36:170:36:20

She has no idea that, as soon as the performance ends,

0:36:210:36:24

we'll be taking to the stage to surprise her.

0:36:240:36:27

It's just five minutes until curtain call.

0:36:330:36:35

-Right, how are you feeling?

-A little bit nervous.

0:36:360:36:39

-I'm nervous, as well.

-I know, but excited.

0:36:390:36:41

So they're about to bow.

0:36:410:36:42

-So the minute they've done their first bow, we go on stage.

-Yes, OK.

0:36:420:36:45

-I'm ready for it.

-Look at you. You're all, "Oh...!" Let's go.

0:36:450:36:48

Angela and I take our place backstage.

0:36:510:36:54

Trish is with us.

0:36:540:36:55

I'm used to being in the wings, but even I am feeling the nerves.

0:36:580:37:02

There are hundreds of people in the audience

0:37:090:37:10

and no-one but Katie's two friends

0:37:100:37:12

have any idea what's about to happen.

0:37:120:37:15

Please welcome to the stage two original Calendar Girls,

0:37:160:37:19

Angela Knowles and Tricia Stewart

0:37:190:37:22

and Aled Jones!

0:37:220:37:24

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:37:240:37:29

We won't keep you very long, ladies and gentlemen.

0:37:380:37:40

Angela and I are here for a reason.

0:37:400:37:42

I'm Aled, by the way. That's Angela.

0:37:420:37:45

And we're here today to surprise somebody very special

0:37:450:37:49

in the audience.

0:37:490:37:51

One of you.

0:37:510:37:53

This person has no idea this is going to happen.

0:37:530:37:55

So as I invite her onto stage, please give her a round of applause.

0:37:550:38:01

The one and only Katie Moore, ladies and gentlemen!

0:38:010:38:04

CHEERING

0:38:040:38:06

Brilliant.

0:38:160:38:17

You didn't see that coming, did you?

0:38:170:38:20

How are you?

0:38:200:38:21

Katie, you thought we were making a programme

0:38:270:38:29

about dealing with bereavement.

0:38:290:38:31

Which is part of the story.

0:38:310:38:33

Not the full story, is it?

0:38:330:38:35

No.

0:38:350:38:36

What happened to me and what happened to you is so similar.

0:38:360:38:39

-So similar.

-So similar.

0:38:390:38:41

So many things are the same.

0:38:410:38:43

And I wanted to give you something back,

0:38:430:38:46

like these people here have given me.

0:38:460:38:49

-I'm going to cry now.

-No, don't cry.

0:38:530:38:56

I can't say it, but it's in a letter.

0:39:010:39:04

-And if you can...

-Go on, you go.

0:39:050:39:07

-..I'd like you to read it out.

-I won't be able to read it out.

0:39:070:39:10

-You won't?

-No. But I've got two darling friends

0:39:100:39:14

-that might be able to read it out.

-Aled?

-Come on, then, yeah.

0:39:140:39:17

I've got no make-up on, but I'll do this, anyway!

0:39:190:39:21

"Katie, your story of losing your husband Tom

0:39:240:39:27

"is so similar to my story.

0:39:270:39:30

"You, like me, have a desire to raise money

0:39:300:39:32

"and help find a cure for blood cancer patients.

0:39:320:39:35

"I also know how knowledgeable and passionate you are

0:39:350:39:37

"about the fashion industry.

0:39:370:39:39

"With that in mind, we've teamed up with Bloodwise,

0:39:390:39:42

"who are going to lend you their full support

0:39:420:39:44

"to set up your own charity fashion show

0:39:440:39:46

"in the memory of your husband Tom."

0:39:460:39:47

Wow! Oh, my God!

0:39:470:39:49

That's amazing!

0:39:490:39:51

"I also want to make you an ambassador for the charity,

0:39:550:39:58

"working directly with the CEO

0:39:580:40:00

"to help support young people who are bereaved.

0:40:000:40:03

"And I want to act as a mentor to you in all your fundraising efforts.

0:40:030:40:07

"Onwards and upwards, as we Calendar Girls say."

0:40:070:40:10

There you are.

0:40:120:40:14

There you are.

0:40:220:40:24

-A few sunflowers for her.

-Can I just ask you...?

0:40:290:40:32

Let me carry it for you, darling.

0:40:320:40:34

It's been quite a day.

0:40:340:40:35

It is really heavy, wow!

0:40:350:40:37

Put it down, it'll be fine.

0:40:370:40:39

-Let me ask you, I know it's very emotional...

-I'm sorry.

0:40:390:40:42

Don't be sorry.

0:40:420:40:43

Please, don't be sorry.

0:40:430:40:45

I was gone before I even got onto the stage, to be honest with you.

0:40:450:40:47

-How do you feel about all this?

-Erm...

0:40:470:40:50

throughout watching the theatre performance, there was just so much.

0:40:500:40:55

Even the dressing gowns you were wearing...

0:40:550:40:58

I've got one. And it was a bit like,

0:40:580:41:01

"Oh, my God, she's wearing the same dressing gown." And, yeah, bizarre.

0:41:010:41:04

Just so many... Just too much in common.

0:41:040:41:07

And now an ambassador.

0:41:070:41:09

I can't even take that in.

0:41:090:41:10

And what am I doing on the stage?

0:41:100:41:13

And finally, if you need a couple of models for your fashion show,

0:41:160:41:20

then Angela and I are available.

0:41:200:41:23

-But we're definitely going to keep our clothes on!

-Definitely!

0:41:230:41:27

Don't start.

0:41:290:41:30

Ladies and gentlemen, it's been a very emotional day for Katie.

0:41:300:41:33

I'm sure you'll join me in giving her a round of applause.

0:41:330:41:35

But also, as we leave the stage,

0:41:350:41:37

a massive round of applause for these guys.

0:41:370:41:39

Incredible stars from The Girls!

0:41:390:41:42

CHEERING

0:41:420:41:44

Oh, it's amazing. I can't comprehend it.

0:41:510:41:53

I'm completely and utterly gobsmacked.

0:41:530:41:55

I haven't taken it in.

0:41:550:41:56

I actually just need to sit down and digest it, because I just...

0:41:560:42:00

I don't know. I...

0:42:000:42:01

Yeah, it's amazing. And...

0:42:010:42:03

Yeah.

0:42:030:42:04

And I don't think she had any idea, really, what was happening.

0:42:060:42:09

And I think she's kind of, you know, taking it all in.

0:42:090:42:12

It'll take a while, I think.

0:42:120:42:14

But, yeah, it was really, really good.

0:42:140:42:16

I nearly didn't cry. But then I did a bit.

0:42:160:42:18

But it was very emotional.

0:42:180:42:20

-It was amazing.

-Amazing and emotional.

0:42:200:42:24

-Yeah.

-Just so special.

0:42:240:42:25

She didn't expect it at all.

0:42:250:42:27

I think her and Angela had such a special connection

0:42:270:42:30

that she gets why this is a really important step for her.

0:42:300:42:33

And she will do amazingly with the fashion show.

0:42:330:42:35

-Fashion's in good hands.

-Definitely!

0:42:350:42:37

It's an absolutely amazing opportunity for her and her life,

0:42:370:42:39

and coming out of something so horrendous this happens, so...

0:42:390:42:42

And Tom would be so proud.

0:42:420:42:44

Well, what a privilege it was to see the joy on Katie's face just then.

0:42:480:42:52

You know, Angela knew instinctively

0:42:520:42:54

what Katie needed at this point in her life.

0:42:540:42:56

And she was completely right.

0:42:560:42:58

Combining Katie's love of fashion

0:42:580:43:00

with a charity that she cares so deeply about was spot-on.

0:43:000:43:03

And now Katie is going to be mentored

0:43:030:43:05

by the Calendar Girls themselves.

0:43:050:43:07

Well, that's the icing on the cake.

0:43:070:43:09

How can I do a programme involving the WI

0:43:090:43:11

and not even get to enjoy a slice of cake?

0:43:110:43:14

Well, as they say, onwards and upwards.
