How often have you watched the news and seen disasters... | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
The sea rose up 20 feet, flooding the area. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
..and tragedies? | 0:00:06 | 0:00:07
The bomb exploded at about 3:10 this afternoon. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
SIRENS | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
But what if you were caught up in the events? | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
GUNFIRE | 0:00:13 | 0:00:14
I've been out there and checked. So many bodies and she's not there. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
And now, inspired by your past, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
you are on a mission to help someone today... | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
The support that we had after the fire was so tremendous, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
you just want to do something for the people that helped us. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
Hopefully, I'll be able to help him to achieve some of his goals. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
..someone who has no idea that this life-changing gift is coming. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
Oh, my days! | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
Why's there so many people outside? | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
Hiya, Paul. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
CHEERING | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
We're here today to surprise somebody very special. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
This is Going Back, Giving Back. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
It's September 2003. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
A group of ordinary Yorkshire women | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
find themselves thrust into the limelight. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
-What do you make of the red-carpet treatment? -Oh, amazing! | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
-Massive! -I want one at home! | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
Stars overnight for the unlikeliest of reasons. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:16
The middle-aged WI members had all posed for a calendar naked | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
to raise money for charity | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
after Miss February lost her husband to cancer. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
Unimaginable success followed, leading to a blockbuster film, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
a stage show and a West End musical. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
The calendar has sold by the hundreds of thousands | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
and the girls, well, they are international media stars. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:39
Now this extraordinary woman wants to help someone else | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
who's also suffered a terrible loss... | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
If I could help somebody who was in my position... | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
just a little bit, just give them a little bit back, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
that would be fantastic. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
..putting them centre stage to give them the gift of a lifetime. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
-The minute they've done their first bow, we go on stage. -Yeah, OK. -OK? | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
-I'm ready for it. -Look at you! OK, let's go. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
CHEERING | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
TRAIN WHISTLE TOOTS | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
71-year-old Angela Knowles, formerly Baker, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
lives in a quiet village in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
19 years ago, she lost her dear husband John to cancer. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
His death triggered the fundraising calendar. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
And I can't wait to meet Angela. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
And get out of the rain! | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
DOORBELL CHIMES | 0:02:35 | 0:02:36
-Hiya! -Hello. -How are you? -I'm good. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
-How are you? -Good, thank you very much. -In this lovely weather. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
Proper Yorkshire weather, yeah? | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
We won't melt, I don't think. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
I feel like I know you so well already, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:51
-but I bet I'm not the first person to say that, am I? -No, you're not. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
But we're recognisable when we're in our black and sunflowers more, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
but occasionally we get recognised now in the supermarket. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
But Angela was never after fame. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
The saucy calendar was dreamt up to raise money | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
for research into blood cancer, that killed her husband John. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
You guys have raised so much money for charity. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
Yeah, we have, yeah. Nearly £5 million. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
Look at that smile on your face when you said that. I love it! | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
And when we raised the first million, I sat at this table, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:24
just writing it all day with all those noughts at the end. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
I could not believe that that's what we'd done. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
But now we can put a five in front. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
John was just 53 when he found out he had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
It's a cancer that affects the immune system. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
He died just months after diagnosis. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
It was such a shock, because he was such a healthy person. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
Never had a day off work. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
And we just couldn't believe it. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
Angela was heartbroken. | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
The couple had been inseparable | 0:03:57 | 0:03:58
since they'd met in their late teens. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
Where would you be, do you think, | 0:04:01 | 0:04:03
and what would have happened without the support of the girls? | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
Oh, I don't know. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:06
I would have been in a much sadder place, I think, | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
if I hadn't had the girls and my friends and family. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
Best friend and fellow WI member Trish would drop in all the time. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:19
Trish used to come round and she'd bring her pyjamas and say, | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
"You know, I'm stopping tonight." | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
It was just great because I hated being on my own. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:31
And they were just there, all the time. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
After John died, I thought my world had come to an end. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
But, you know, the girls got together and we did what we did, | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
never thinking what would happen. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
Not in a million years. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
You've raised so much for charity, as I say. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
-But now, you want to help someone individually. -Yes, I do. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
I'd like to help someone in my position. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
Well, in order for you to give back, I think we need to go back first. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
I've got the car outside, so we're going to go on a little drive. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
All right. Great. Sounds good. Are you a good driver? | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
We'll find out. Come on, let's go. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
Angela's life has played out like a Hollywood movie. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
But before we hear about that, | 0:05:11 | 0:05:12
I want to find out a bit more about John. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
So our first destination is a place that was very close to his heart. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
Tell me a bit about John and how you first met, then. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
-Because you were both very young, weren't you? -Yes. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
-I was 17 when I met John. -Right. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:27
I had the best job ever. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:28
I worked in the students' union at Sheffield University | 0:05:28 | 0:05:32
-and I ran the National Union of Students travel bureau. -OK. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:36
John came in one day with a group of friends to book a holiday | 0:05:36 | 0:05:41
and I thought, "Oooh, he looks a bit of all right." | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
You should've been concentrating on your job. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
And, of course, you know, he filled his application form in, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
so I knew where he came from, what he was doing... | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
-And you were keen. -Yeah, I was. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
After a couple of meetings, John asked Angela out, | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
having heard she had free tickets to a student dance. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
John phoned up at 4:55 and said, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
"I hear you're going to the dance tonight. Can I take you?" | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
Oh... | 0:06:10 | 0:06:11 | |
He was a bit of a Yorkshireman, | 0:06:11 | 0:06:12
because he knew I'd got free tickets! | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
ALED LAUGHS | 0:06:15 | 0:06:16
So that was the reason, then, OK. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
So, anyway, yes. So... | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
And that was that. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:21
A year later, we got engaged on graduation day. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:28
-Gosh. -And a year after that, we were married. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
Angela and John's wedding was in 1966 at her local church. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
Two years after their big day, their first child Rachel was born. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
And their second, Matthew, came in 1971. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
They were extremely happy. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
What was so special about him? | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
-Well, he was good-looking. -Yeah. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
And he had a lovely smile. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:55
-And he was quite shy. -Right. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
You know, it was just one of those things, | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
kind of love at first sight and you just click. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:05
He very much was your soul mate, wasn't he? | 0:07:05 | 0:07:06
He was my soul mate, yeah. He really was my soul mate, yeah. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:10
It was good. Life was good. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
-Well, you've guessed where we are now. -Yes. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
This is a place where... | 0:07:19 | 0:07:20
-Lots of memories. -Lots of memories. -Mm-hm. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
We're at the Dales Countryside Museum. | 0:07:25 | 0:07:27
An assistant National Park officer for 24 years, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:31
John was passionate about the Dales. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
The last project he undertook | 0:07:33 | 0:07:34
was converting this disused railway station | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
into a museum for the area. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
This is one of the places that I managed to bring John | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
when he was really, really poorly, | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
because he was desperate to see them starting the alterations. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:50
-Well, this was his place, wasn't it? -It was his place. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
-So, yeah, his place. -Yeah. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
The museum documents the Dales' past, | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
focusing on the 19th and 20th century. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
-You know this person. -I do know this person. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:03
The museum manager is Fiona Rocher. She used to work with John. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:08
-I usually come when you're not here. -That's right. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:10
How are you? Nice to see you. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
Thanks so much for being here, showing us around. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
That's all right. You're very welcome. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
So we've come to a building that means a great deal to you. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
Yeah. We have. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
The John Richard Baker exhibition hall. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
-It's just wonderful. -Isn't it just? -Mm-hm. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
"A man who loved the Dales, | 0:08:29 | 0:08:30
"striving to sustain their natural beauty for future generations." | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
John was highly regarded by his colleagues, | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
always pushing himself and others to deliver the best for the Dales. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
-What was John like to work with? -He was really enthusiastic. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
Good fun to work with, | 0:08:45 | 0:08:47
but very determined in everything that he was doing. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:50
And he had a huge passion for the Dales | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
and a passion for this project. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:53
Only 54 when he died, John still had so much to live for. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
-It all happened so quickly, though, didn't it? -Yeah. It did. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
In the grand scheme of things. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
-Because he was such a fit man, wasn't he? -He was, yeah. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
And then suddenly, bang! | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
And it was, you know, diagnosed, massive operation | 0:09:09 | 0:09:14
and then... | 0:09:14 | 0:09:15
..they tried chemo, four lots, and it didn't work. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:21
-And it was how many...? -Five months altogether. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
-Five months altogether? -Yeah. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
-And if anyone tried hard to get better, he did. -Mm. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:35
Really, really tried hard. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
And thought that he would, really. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
Cos he was so positive right to the very last day. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
How do you feel when you're here? | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
Erm...I try not to cry. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
But really proud. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:51
-Yeah. -Really proud. | 0:09:51 | 0:09:53
-This is his legacy. -Yeah. | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
-It is. -It's pretty impressive. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
-It is. -Yeah. | 0:09:58 | 0:09:59
But to have this room named after him is very special. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:04
He's here. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:07
He's here. He was a huge supporter, wasn't he? | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
He's here. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
It's interesting, isn't it, you know, through his work, | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
-getting people to know about the Dales and your work...? -Yeah. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
Between the both of you, | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
-you've brought a lot of people to the Dales. -Well, yes. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
Calendar Girl country. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
I don't know what... I think he'd approve of it. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
Yes. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:35 | |
We're now going back to the day | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
Angela and her WI friends thought might cause a stir in the village. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
But instead, it caused a frenzy all over the country. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
We'll have a little test now, then, OK? | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
-Miss February? -Me. -Yeah. | 0:10:48 | 0:10:50
I knew you'd know that one. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:52
-Miss November? -Ross. -Yeah. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
-Trish was Miss October. -Yeah. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:57
Chris was Miss September, with her buns. | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
-That was a funny one. -Teapot and buns. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
The 11 women who dared to bare | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
were all members of the Rylstone and District WI. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
The Women's Institute was set up in 1915 | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
to help rural communities grow their own food in World War I. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
Since then, it's become the largest | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
women's voluntary organisation in the UK. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
We help each other, we learn from each other, | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
we enjoy being together. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:27
In 1974, Angela joined. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
And she's never looked back, making lifelong friends, | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
including best mate Trish. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
So they do a national WI calendar. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
And they ask for... | 0:11:37 | 0:11:38
It's always on a theme. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:40
So a nice picture of a sunset or a village green or whatever. | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
And this particular year they were asking and Trish just nudged me | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
-and said, "You know, we could do our own calendar." -Yeah. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
"We could do it depicting the crafts of the WI, | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
"but Pirelli style." | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
Yeah. | 0:11:58 | 0:11:59 | |
And I just looked at her and said, "As if we'd do that!" | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
We had a very funny half-hour saying what craft we'd be. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
But we never did anything about it. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
We just talked about it for ages. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
Until John was ill and he was in hospital. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
And one day, all the girls were there. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:19
-And we were telling him, you know, "We're going to do this." -Yeah. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:23
And he said, "You'll never do that. You're just all talk." | 0:12:23 | 0:12:27
-But you see... -Red rag to a bull. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
Yeah. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:32 | |
-Feisty Yorkshire ladies. -Yeah. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:34
Three months after John died in 1998, | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
Trish suggested they did the calendar | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
to take Angela's mind off things, | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
as much as raising money for blood cancer, | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
which is the third-biggest cancer killer in the UK. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
The night was set. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:47
We went with our dressing gowns, slippers and a bottle of red wine. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:51
It's great, isn't it? You couldn't make it up, could you? | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
Angela and Trish recruited nine other volunteers, all WI members. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:59
Local artist Terry Logan, the husband of one of the ladies, Linda, | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
volunteered to take the pictures. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:04
And Linda had the fire stoked up so we wouldn't get cold | 0:13:07 | 0:13:11
and all the curtains closed and the door locked, you know, | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
-in case one of the neighbours popped in. -Yeah. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:17
Was there a lot of nerves or a lot of laughter? | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
A lot of laughter. A lot of laughter and... | 0:13:19 | 0:13:23
Just what you needed. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:24
Yeah, just what I needed. And... | 0:13:24 | 0:13:26
You know, I'd gone and I didn't take any pearls or anything, | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
I just wore whatever there was. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
And took my clothes off and they just said, | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
because I could play the piano, they just said, "Sit here. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
-"Play Jerusalem." -Brilliant. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
So you've finally guessed where we're going now? | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
Probably, we're going to Cracoe. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
Could be. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:54
-Probably the pub. -Could be. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:57
Cracoe is a village in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
It's where Angela and John had their family home. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:03
It's also where the calendar was created. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
-So you guessed right. -Yes. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
-What's the pub in the village? -The Devonshire Arms in Cracoe. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:13
-Shall we head in? -Yeah. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
-No point standing out in the rain. -No. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:17
When Angela and her friends printed the calendar, | 0:14:19 | 0:14:21
they arranged a launch. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
They only expected a few friends to turn up. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:26
Even in their wildest dreams, | 0:14:26 | 0:14:27
they couldn't have imagined what was going to happen. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
The WI women were about to go global. | 0:14:30 | 0:14:33
This is the room where we launched our calendar. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
What was that like, that day? | 0:14:36 | 0:14:38
Well, that morning, I woke up to Sarah Kennedy talking about us. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:42
-On Radio 2? -Yeah. And then Terry Wogan. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:45
And then I thought, "Oh, my goodness." | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
And then I rang Trish and I said, "Everyone's talking about us." | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
She said, "You want to see the pub car park. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
"It's full of white vans with satellite dishes on the top." | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
A simple press release had caught the eye and imagination | 0:15:01 | 0:15:03
of news editors all over the country. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
It's called the Alternative WI Calendar. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
It features 11 members of Rylstone and District WI. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
The UK's media were desperate to see the middle-aged women, | 0:15:12 | 0:15:16
who were taking their clothes off for a risque WI calendar. | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
-What went through your mind? -"Oh, what have we done?" | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
I thought, "What have we done?" | 0:15:22 | 0:15:24
By lunchtime, we were on the local BBC. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:28
And at evening, we were on the six o'clock BBC News. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
-Goodness me. -It was just incredible. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:34
What was the atmosphere like in this room? | 0:15:34 | 0:15:36
Well, everybody was just so excited. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:38
You know, and it's not what they expected. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:41
-Shall we get into the car? -Yes, let's go. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:43
By the end of 1999, eight months after it was first launched, | 0:15:59 | 0:16:03
88,000 copies of the calendar had been sold in the UK. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
The WI friends had become household names. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
Voted women of the year, they even went to Buckingham Palace | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
to present copies to Her Majesty the Queen and the Queen Mother. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:16
Our last stop is Kettlewell, | 0:16:18 | 0:16:20
the setting for the blockbuster hit Calendar Girls, | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
the movie based on Angela's powerful story. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
-Shall we go and have a little sit down? -Yeah, let's. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
The year after the calendar was launched in the UK, | 0:16:30 | 0:16:32
it was released in America. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
240,000 copies were sold. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
The women had become international stars. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:39
I was getting phone calls from Hollywood. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
Which sounds wonderful, but it's quite scary, | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
when you've no idea, you know, how to cope with it. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
Studios were fighting over Angela's story. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
Eventually, she, along with five of her WI friends, | 0:16:53 | 0:16:55
agreed to have a film made | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
but set strict terms. | 0:16:57 | 0:16:59
A percentage of the profits had to go to Bloodwise, | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
the blood cancer charity they supported. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:04
It also had to be set in the Dales with an all-British cast. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
Angela, an ordinary woman from Yorkshire, | 0:17:07 | 0:17:10
was about to get a phone call that dreams are made of. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:13
An A-list film star was to play her in the movie. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:17
The phone went one day and I answered the phone | 0:17:17 | 0:17:19
and this person said, "Hello, Angela, it's Julie here." | 0:17:19 | 0:17:22
And I went, "Julie? Do I know a Julie?" | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
I said, "I'm sorry?" | 0:17:25 | 0:17:26
And she said, "It's Julie Walters." | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
Well, I nearly stood to attention. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
She said, "What are you doing on Thursday?" | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
Well, if I'd been doing anything, I would have cancelled it, wouldn't I? | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
-Of course you would have. -And she said she'd like to come and meet us. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:42
And I baked scones for them. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
-But I didn't do it for you, honey. -No, thanks for reinforcing that fact. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
Yeah, lovely. Cheers! | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
But then, after Julie came, they all came. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:54
And they were just like friends. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
Julie Walters played Angela, | 0:17:57 | 0:17:59
whilst Helen Mirren took on the role of Trish. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
The delightfully funny film was released in 2003 | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
and was an instant hit. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
Off! | 0:18:08 | 0:18:09 | |
Off! Off! | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
Off! Off! Off! | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
Off! | 0:18:15 | 0:18:16 | |
For months, the girls travelled the world promoting the film | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
and their charity. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
Everywhere they went, they wore a sunflower | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
in memory of Angela's husband John. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
Look where the ladies of the Women's Institute have been tonight. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:37
A world premiere with red-carpet treatment. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:39
We don't think we're stars. We just dip in and out of this. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
We don't think this is our lives. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:43
This is something we do now and then | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
and then we go back home and that's where we want to be. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
I mean, we still do the washing on a Monday | 0:18:47 | 0:18:49
and the ironing on a Tuesday and we have to go to the supermarket | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
and no-one kind of makes a fuss of us. And it's good. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
We thought, after the film, there couldn't be anything else. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:04
And then there was the stage play. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
-And then we thought, "That must be it." -Yeah. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
-And then, David Pugh came and said... -He's the producer, yeah? | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
Yeah, the producer of the stage play, as well. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
..that Tim Firth and Gary Barlow had been writing a musical. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:20
Well, what do you say? | 0:19:22 | 0:19:23
Heavens... | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
But do you know what the great thing about it is? | 0:19:25 | 0:19:27
As you say, the reason you did it in the first place is to raise money. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
And you've raised how much? | 0:19:31 | 0:19:32
-Nearly five million. -Nearly five million. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
And the amount of hearts that you've touched along the way. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:38
-Yeah. -Incredible. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:39
Including this one today, I've got to say. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:41
I've so enjoyed taking you back, I really have. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
And has doing all this, you know, all the places we've been, | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
-has it made you want to help someone even more? -Yes. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
That would be really good. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:51
If I could help somebody who was in my position, just a little bit, | 0:19:51 | 0:19:56
just give them a little bit back, that would be fantastic. | 0:19:56 | 0:20:00
Well, listen, I'll see you in a week or so. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
-And thank you for everything. -It's all right. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
-It's been great seeing you. -And great to see you. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
And I forgive you for not baking me a cake. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
-Just about! -Next time. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:11
Oh, yeah, promises, promises! | 0:20:11 | 0:20:13
Wow, what an inspirational day. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
I've thoroughly enjoyed meeting Angela. She's such a ray of light. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:24
And, you know, what she and her fellow Calendar Girls achieved | 0:20:24 | 0:20:26
is astounding. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:28
They are life-savers through the money that they raised | 0:20:28 | 0:20:30
for their charity. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:31
And taking Angela back on this journey into her past | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
has been moving. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:35
But it's also focused her mind to really want to help someone today, | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
someone who's in a similar position to the one she was in 18 years ago, | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
when she had the support of her friends. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:44
And we think we've found somebody who really fits the bill. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:48
Katie Moore lives in Hampton, Middlesex, | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
with her son Archie, who's five. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:57
Three years ago, | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
Katie lost her husband and soul mate Tom to leukaemia. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
He was just 35. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:03
Angela is about to meet Katie for the first time | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
to see if there's a way she can help her. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:08
I'm expecting to learn lots about Katie. | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
I think, once we get chatting to each other, | 0:21:15 | 0:21:18
we'll probably find out that we've got a lot of things in common. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:22
So it'll be good, I think. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
I've never been short of a conversation. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:26
Katie believes we're making a programme | 0:21:28 | 0:21:30
about losing a loved one to cancer. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:32
She's completely in the dark | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
that she might be in line for a generous gift from Angela. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:37
Lovely to see you. Can I come in? Thank you. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
-This way? -Yes, straight through. -Thank you. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:44
It's really nice to meet you. You have a story to tell. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:49
And I have a story to tell. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
-So I think... -Unfortunately. -That's why we got together. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:55
So you tell me how you met. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:57
Tom and I were on the same course, | 0:21:57 | 0:21:59
so we both did sports studies with business. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:02
And a very long story short, | 0:22:02 | 0:22:03
we got together towards the end of our final year. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:08
And obviously, we were together until he passed away at 35. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
-35... -Mm. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:13
That's very early. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:14
Katie and Tom were studying at Southampton University | 0:22:15 | 0:22:18
in the late '90s. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20
They married in 2010. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
A year later, they had baby Archie. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:24
Just like Angela's John, Tom was seemingly fit and healthy. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:29
He loved sport, playing football every week. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:32
He'd also landed his dream job working for the Premier League. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
But in August 2013, he started complaining of feeling ill. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:40
He was always getting the flu. He would have night sweats. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
He would be coughing. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
-Probably very similar to what you witnessed. -Yeah. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
The GP was just giving him antibiotics | 0:22:48 | 0:22:51
or telling him to go home and rest. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:54
So I called a private GP and I got him a blood test. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:58
We took the blood tests. | 0:22:58 | 0:22:59
I absolutely didn't think it would be what it was. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
And I got a call from the GP to say could I bring Tom in. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:07
And when the word "leukaemia" came out of her mouth, I... | 0:23:07 | 0:23:11
-I don't know, just glass shattered. -Mm. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
He was in pieces. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
I was in a sheer panic. I just thought, "You've got this wrong. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
"You've absolutely got this wrong." | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
Tom was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, or AML, | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
an aggressive form of blood cancer requiring immediate treatment. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:34
Two days before his 35th birthday, he started chemo. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
And you're in hospital for four weeks | 0:23:38 | 0:23:40
and then he was allowed home for a week. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:42
And then it would happen again and again. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
And we were positive and we just thought we'd get through it. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:48
Tom underwent gruelling chemo. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
After three rounds, he was approved for stem cell treatment. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
A donor had been found. It looked as if he was going to recover. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
But then, after a blood test, his consultant called. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
He said, "Can I speak to Tom? Because we've seen | 0:24:01 | 0:24:05
-"irregular cells in his blood." -Yeah. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
And basically, he'd relapsed. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
And he then underwent his fourth chemo. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
And then he caught an infection. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:16
And... | 0:24:17 | 0:24:19
..he went to intensive care. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
And in intensive care, Tom just deteriorated and deteriorated. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:27
Eventually, I got told that... | 0:24:28 | 0:24:30
..Tom wasn't going to make it. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:32
So how long had he had it? How...? | 0:24:36 | 0:24:39
-Five months. -Five months? -Yeah. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:42
Because it's so similar, you know? | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
-He had the night sweats. We thought he had flu. -Yeah. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
And he had four lots of chemo, too. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
But then, eventually, erm... | 0:24:51 | 0:24:53
..it went into his brain. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
And he couldn't stand up, he couldn't walk. | 0:24:57 | 0:25:02
And the consultant said, probably, he would never have walked again. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:07
And John heard that and he just said he'd had enough. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:11
He didn't want anything else. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:14
And that's it. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
-So we've got a lot in common. -Yeah, we have. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
Five months. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:26
So quick from being... | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
well. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:30 | |
-And...hard to take. -Yeah. | 0:25:30 | 0:25:32
While Angela is with Katie, | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
I've arranged to meet one of Katie's best friends - Debbie. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:39
-Hi. How are you? -Come in. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:42
-Nice to meet you. -Nice to meet you. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
-Please, come in. -Thanks. | 0:25:44 | 0:25:45
I'll take my coat off. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
It must have been awful for you as a friend seeing her go through that. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
It was terrible, because her and Tom were just one of these couples | 0:25:52 | 0:25:56
that we had up on a pedestal. | 0:25:56 | 0:25:58
He just was a very well-rounded, thoughtful and kind man. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:01
Just gave her what she needed. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:03
They were thinking about another child. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:05
When we got the news that he had died, it was just... | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
a kind of punch to the stomach for all of us. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
-You don't expect it, do you? -Not at that age, no. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
She'd sent us all a message saying, "My angel has gone." | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
And she didn't say any more than that. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
It's just so unexpected in life. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
And I just remember that day, we went round the day after he died. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:35
And just going into the room she was in | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
and she was under the covers and just broken. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:41
And just having to hold her was just... | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
It was really sad. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:46
How has she been since then, then? | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49
-Sorry... -No, it's OK. It's obviously still raw, isn't it? | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
-You know? -Yeah. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:54
She's been amazing. | 0:26:54 | 0:26:56
-She's strong, isn't she? -Yeah. | 0:26:57 | 0:26:59
Just... | 0:26:59 | 0:27:01
-I'm so proud of her. -Yeah. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:03
I think the first year of Tom passing away was a complete blur. | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
And I even look back and think, "What did I do in that first year?" | 0:27:12 | 0:27:16
I absolutely don't know how I got through it. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:19
And the hardest thing was when... | 0:27:20 | 0:27:22
I mean, yes, I was busy | 0:27:22 | 0:27:24
and we were here, there and everywhere | 0:27:24 | 0:27:26
doing everything with the calendar and the film, | 0:27:26 | 0:27:29
but, you know, the other girls, when we'd gone anywhere, | 0:27:29 | 0:27:33
-we were on a train and all their husbands met them. -Yeah. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:36
Yeah, I've been there. | 0:27:37 | 0:27:39
-You know, and you just get off and you know there's no-one there. -Yeah. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
As well as dealing with her grief, | 0:27:46 | 0:27:49
Katie was left trying to do the best by little Archie, | 0:27:49 | 0:27:51
just a toddler at the time he lost his dad. | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
She's had to be strong for the both of them. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
-Archie was two when Tom passed away. -Mm-hm. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:02
So he doesn't really remember his daddy. | 0:28:02 | 0:28:05
Obviously, we have pictures and we do talk about him all the time. | 0:28:05 | 0:28:07
It would have been hard on your own, coping with that and a small child. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:15
I can't imagine what it was like. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:17
It is hard. It's hard just juggling everything. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:19
Like Angela, | 0:28:25 | 0:28:26
Katie's had a huge amount of support from close friends. | 0:28:26 | 0:28:29
Debbie was on maternity leave when Tom died. | 0:28:29 | 0:28:32
She would drive two hours across London every day | 0:28:32 | 0:28:34
to be there for Katie. | 0:28:34 | 0:28:35
She knew there was a group of us and we were on the phone | 0:28:35 | 0:28:38
and we were there for her, no matter what. | 0:28:38 | 0:28:41
You're a very close unit. All of you, you're friends. | 0:28:41 | 0:28:44
We have been friends for a long time, | 0:28:44 | 0:28:46
some of us since the age of five. | 0:28:46 | 0:28:47
There's so many parallels between your story | 0:28:47 | 0:28:49
and that of the Calendar Girls, as well, and Angela. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:52
Katie works in fashion, an industry she loves. | 0:28:54 | 0:28:57
But since Tom died, | 0:28:57 | 0:28:58
she's had to juggle her career to look after Archie. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:01
While she takes a break from full-time working, just like Angela, | 0:29:01 | 0:29:04
she'd like to raise money for blood cancer research | 0:29:04 | 0:29:07
and also for young widows. | 0:29:07 | 0:29:09
I would love to do something. | 0:29:09 | 0:29:11
I've done a half-marathon. We have raised money for Bloodwise. | 0:29:11 | 0:29:15
But it's now how to take that forward and what else to do. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:18
It will happen, I'm sure. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:20
Angela is trying to think if there is a way she might help Katie. | 0:29:21 | 0:29:25
But first, she's planned a little treat. | 0:29:25 | 0:29:28
-Katie, you've been told that you've got to be free tomorrow. -Yes. | 0:29:28 | 0:29:32
You're going to have some very good friends | 0:29:32 | 0:29:34
that are going to come and join you. | 0:29:34 | 0:29:36
And you're going into the West End... | 0:29:36 | 0:29:39
and you're going to see The Girls musical. | 0:29:39 | 0:29:44
Oh, my gosh! | 0:29:45 | 0:29:46
-Your show? -Yes. | 0:29:47 | 0:29:49
Oh, my gosh! That's amazing! | 0:29:49 | 0:29:51
Thank you. That's... That's so sweet. | 0:29:51 | 0:29:53
It's a pleasure. It's a pleasure. | 0:29:53 | 0:29:56
Not only will Katie get to see the show, | 0:29:57 | 0:29:59
but Angela is hatching a plan to surprise her at the theatre | 0:29:59 | 0:30:02
with an even bigger gift... | 0:30:02 | 0:30:04
She's going to be, erm... | 0:30:04 | 0:30:06
excited or angry? | 0:30:06 | 0:30:08
-She's got a tendency to be a bit cross sometimes. -Oh, no! -So... | 0:30:09 | 0:30:12
No, I think she'll be excited | 0:30:12 | 0:30:14
and it will just be quite overwhelming for her | 0:30:14 | 0:30:17
to take it all in, | 0:30:17 | 0:30:18
-because she doesn't feel she deserves anything special. -No. | 0:30:18 | 0:30:21
Which is exactly why she deserves something special. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:23
-Well, she's going to get something special. -I know. It's amazing. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:26
Hey, listen, I'll leave you to it. | 0:30:26 | 0:30:28
Next time I see you will be, erm... | 0:30:28 | 0:30:31
-in a busy theatre. -Yeah. Oh, God... -I'm not sure who's more nervous. | 0:30:31 | 0:30:34
-Anyway, thanks for talking to me. -Thank you. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:36
Our stories were so similar. | 0:30:40 | 0:30:43
They really were. | 0:30:43 | 0:30:44
And, yeah, it was... | 0:30:44 | 0:30:46
I didn't think they'd be so similar. But it was amazing, yeah. | 0:30:46 | 0:30:51
And we both... | 0:30:51 | 0:30:52
felt, you know? | 0:30:52 | 0:30:54
You just feel what you went through and what it was like. | 0:30:54 | 0:30:57
And it was good to talk about it. | 0:30:57 | 0:30:59
I would love to be able to support her | 0:30:59 | 0:31:01
and I feel sure that I will be able to. | 0:31:01 | 0:31:04
To help Angela work out how she can give something back to Katie, | 0:31:08 | 0:31:12
she's asked her best friend Trish to London. | 0:31:12 | 0:31:14
She's the perfect person for advice. | 0:31:14 | 0:31:17
After all, the famous fundraising calendar was all her idea. | 0:31:17 | 0:31:20
-Hello, you. -Hello. | 0:31:22 | 0:31:23
Fancy seeing you here! Are you all right? | 0:31:23 | 0:31:26
Well, you know what I've been up to? | 0:31:26 | 0:31:29
Well, vaguely. | 0:31:29 | 0:31:30
Yeah, well, I went to meet this girl yesterday called Katie, | 0:31:30 | 0:31:36
who's only 35, | 0:31:36 | 0:31:38
who's got the same story as mine, really. | 0:31:38 | 0:31:41
She met her husband at university. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:44
-She's got a little boy. -How old? | 0:31:45 | 0:31:48
He's five now. Nearly five, yeah. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:51
And Tom, her husband, gorgeous- looking, you know, and so happy. | 0:31:51 | 0:31:58
And he was diagnosed with leukaemia. | 0:31:58 | 0:32:02
And he died after five months. | 0:32:02 | 0:32:06
-Just like John. -Yeah. | 0:32:06 | 0:32:07
-She's really young to be widowed, isn't she? -Yeah. | 0:32:07 | 0:32:10
How many years is it since he died? | 0:32:10 | 0:32:13
I think it's three. | 0:32:13 | 0:32:15
Angela is wondering if she can help Katie achieve her dream | 0:32:15 | 0:32:19
of raising a substantial amount of money for blood cancer in Tom's name | 0:32:19 | 0:32:23
and help young women who've lost a partner. | 0:32:23 | 0:32:26
You know, we're so similar in so many ways, because, you know, | 0:32:26 | 0:32:29
just like me, I had you and all the other girls. | 0:32:29 | 0:32:34
-And we were always so focused, weren't we... -Mm. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:36
..on doing this calendar? | 0:32:36 | 0:32:38
-And not really knowing what was going to happen to us. -No, no. | 0:32:38 | 0:32:43
And also, like for me, with the calendar and everything, | 0:32:43 | 0:32:46
-you feel as though you are doing something so positive. -Yeah. | 0:32:46 | 0:32:50
Yeah, even though it's hard to do, it was something positive, | 0:32:50 | 0:32:54
-and in John's memory. -Yeah. | 0:32:54 | 0:32:55
And he would have been proud. | 0:32:55 | 0:32:57
And I'm sure her husband would be proud of her... | 0:32:57 | 0:32:59
Yes, that's what I said. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:01
-..to know that you've got up and done something... -Yeah. | 0:33:01 | 0:33:04
..and perhaps helped a lot of other people. | 0:33:04 | 0:33:06
-Like our money will have. Like the research has. -Yeah. | 0:33:06 | 0:33:09
-So, yeah, it's a really good thing. -Yeah. | 0:33:09 | 0:33:12
Trish has reaffirmed Angela's decision to give something back. | 0:33:14 | 0:33:18
And she thinks she might have found a way to help Katie. | 0:33:18 | 0:33:21
I'm on my way to meet Angela. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:26
I'm really looking forward to catching up with her again. | 0:33:26 | 0:33:28
I'm also excited to hear how her meeting with Katie went. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:31
I reckon Angela is the right person to help Katie. | 0:33:31 | 0:33:34
The million-dollar question is...how. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:36
Angela's waiting for me just around the corner | 0:33:37 | 0:33:39
from where the musical of her story is playing in London's Theatreland. | 0:33:39 | 0:33:43
Katie and her friends are on their way to see the show, | 0:33:44 | 0:33:46
so time to find out exactly what Angela's got planned. | 0:33:46 | 0:33:50
Thanks so much for meeting up with me. I know you've met Katie. | 0:33:53 | 0:33:56
-How did it go? -She's amazing. | 0:33:56 | 0:33:59
And we really got on well. | 0:33:59 | 0:34:01
Because I met her friend. | 0:34:01 | 0:34:03
And one of her best friends was saying that, you know, | 0:34:03 | 0:34:05
explained, of course, what she's gone through, | 0:34:05 | 0:34:07
which is absolutely horrendous. | 0:34:07 | 0:34:09
But also, you know, I thought of you instantly, | 0:34:09 | 0:34:11
because she's got this close set of friends | 0:34:11 | 0:34:13
-that have really helped her through it. -Yeah. | 0:34:13 | 0:34:15
-We were so similar in so many things. -Oh, really? | 0:34:15 | 0:34:18
The friends, you know, helped. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:20
And then Tom was only ill, you know, after being a very fit guy, | 0:34:20 | 0:34:24
for five months. Like John. | 0:34:24 | 0:34:26
So we had so much in common to talk about | 0:34:26 | 0:34:29
and how we felt and everything. | 0:34:29 | 0:34:31
So how are you going to help? | 0:34:31 | 0:34:33
Well, her job has been in fashion. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
-And she had thought about doing a fashion show in memory of Tom. -OK. | 0:34:37 | 0:34:44
-And Bloodwise are going to help her do that. -Oh, wow! | 0:34:44 | 0:34:47
And maybe get some celebrities, as well, along the way. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:51
-Oh, so a massive...? -Yeah, quite a big one. | 0:34:51 | 0:34:53
The charity Angela supports raises money for blood cancer research. | 0:34:54 | 0:34:59
They're going to organise a fashion show with Katie | 0:34:59 | 0:35:01
in honour of her husband. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:03
They've also offered to make Katie an ambassador | 0:35:03 | 0:35:05
and she's going to meet the CEO to discuss | 0:35:05 | 0:35:08
how they can best help young widows. | 0:35:08 | 0:35:11
So it's just brilliant. | 0:35:11 | 0:35:12
-So she'll be working with a whole team? -Yeah, it couldn't be better. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:14
And me, as well. I'm going to help her. And the other Calendar Girls. | 0:35:14 | 0:35:18
-Oh, really? -So we're going to be like mentors for her. | 0:35:18 | 0:35:21
-Oh, that's amazing. -So, it's good. | 0:35:21 | 0:35:23
You know, I'm hoping it's going to give her something to focus on. | 0:35:23 | 0:35:26
Something to work for. | 0:35:26 | 0:35:27
And feel in a real good... feel good for herself. | 0:35:27 | 0:35:31
Talking to her friends, that's exactly what she needed, really. | 0:35:31 | 0:35:34
Yeah, yeah. | 0:35:34 | 0:35:35
Well, combining both her passions, | 0:35:35 | 0:35:37
-the fashion and also the charity work. -Yeah. | 0:35:37 | 0:35:41
-Oh, fantastic. -So I'm sure she'll love it. | 0:35:41 | 0:35:43
-Have you put all your thoughts down in a letter? -I have. -Right, OK. | 0:35:43 | 0:35:46
-So the musical starts a little bit later. -Yes. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:50
I reckon, at the end of the musical, | 0:35:50 | 0:35:52
-we should go on stage and surprise her. What do you think? -Yeah. | 0:35:52 | 0:35:54
Yeah! | 0:35:54 | 0:35:56 | |
-Are you nervous about that? -I am. | 0:35:56 | 0:35:57
But I think she'll be up for it. I really do, yes. | 0:35:57 | 0:36:00
-Oh, I'm excited. This is going to be a good one. -Yes. | 0:36:00 | 0:36:02
The stage is set, as Katie and her best friends Debbie and Alexia | 0:36:05 | 0:36:09
arrive in London's West End to see the musical. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:11
As they settle down for the show, | 0:36:15 | 0:36:17
Katie still thinks we're filming her for Angela's treat. | 0:36:17 | 0:36:20
She has no idea that, as soon as the performance ends, | 0:36:21 | 0:36:24
we'll be taking to the stage to surprise her. | 0:36:24 | 0:36:27
It's just five minutes until curtain call. | 0:36:33 | 0:36:35
-Right, how are you feeling? -A little bit nervous. | 0:36:36 | 0:36:39
-I'm nervous, as well. -I know, but excited. | 0:36:39 | 0:36:41
So they're about to bow. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:42
-So the minute they've done their first bow, we go on stage. -Yes, OK. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:45
-I'm ready for it. -Look at you. You're all, "Oh...!" Let's go. | 0:36:45 | 0:36:48
Angela and I take our place backstage. | 0:36:51 | 0:36:54
Trish is with us. | 0:36:54 | 0:36:55
I'm used to being in the wings, but even I am feeling the nerves. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:02
There are hundreds of people in the audience | 0:37:09 | 0:37:10
and no-one but Katie's two friends | 0:37:10 | 0:37:12
have any idea what's about to happen. | 0:37:12 | 0:37:15
Please welcome to the stage two original Calendar Girls, | 0:37:16 | 0:37:19
Angela Knowles and Tricia Stewart | 0:37:19 | 0:37:22
and Aled Jones! | 0:37:22 | 0:37:24
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:37:24 | 0:37:29
We won't keep you very long, ladies and gentlemen. | 0:37:38 | 0:37:40
Angela and I are here for a reason. | 0:37:40 | 0:37:42
I'm Aled, by the way. That's Angela. | 0:37:42 | 0:37:45
And we're here today to surprise somebody very special | 0:37:45 | 0:37:49
in the audience. | 0:37:49 | 0:37:51
One of you. | 0:37:51 | 0:37:53
This person has no idea this is going to happen. | 0:37:53 | 0:37:55
So as I invite her onto stage, please give her a round of applause. | 0:37:55 | 0:38:01
The one and only Katie Moore, ladies and gentlemen! | 0:38:01 | 0:38:04
CHEERING | 0:38:04 | 0:38:06
Brilliant. | 0:38:16 | 0:38:17
You didn't see that coming, did you? | 0:38:17 | 0:38:20
How are you? | 0:38:20 | 0:38:21
Katie, you thought we were making a programme | 0:38:27 | 0:38:29
about dealing with bereavement. | 0:38:29 | 0:38:31
Which is part of the story. | 0:38:31 | 0:38:33
Not the full story, is it? | 0:38:33 | 0:38:35
No. | 0:38:35 | 0:38:36 | |
What happened to me and what happened to you is so similar. | 0:38:36 | 0:38:39
-So similar. -So similar. | 0:38:39 | 0:38:41
So many things are the same. | 0:38:41 | 0:38:43
And I wanted to give you something back, | 0:38:43 | 0:38:46
like these people here have given me. | 0:38:46 | 0:38:49
-I'm going to cry now. -No, don't cry. | 0:38:53 | 0:38:56
I can't say it, but it's in a letter. | 0:39:01 | 0:39:04
-And if you can... -Go on, you go. | 0:39:05 | 0:39:07
-..I'd like you to read it out. -I won't be able to read it out. | 0:39:07 | 0:39:10
-You won't? -No. But I've got two darling friends | 0:39:10 | 0:39:14
-that might be able to read it out. -Aled? -Come on, then, yeah. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:17
I've got no make-up on, but I'll do this, anyway! | 0:39:19 | 0:39:21
"Katie, your story of losing your husband Tom | 0:39:24 | 0:39:27
"is so similar to my story. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:30
"You, like me, have a desire to raise money | 0:39:30 | 0:39:32
"and help find a cure for blood cancer patients. | 0:39:32 | 0:39:35
"I also know how knowledgeable and passionate you are | 0:39:35 | 0:39:37
"about the fashion industry. | 0:39:37 | 0:39:39
"With that in mind, we've teamed up with Bloodwise, | 0:39:39 | 0:39:42
"who are going to lend you their full support | 0:39:42 | 0:39:44
"to set up your own charity fashion show | 0:39:44 | 0:39:46
"in the memory of your husband Tom." | 0:39:46 | 0:39:47
Wow! Oh, my God! | 0:39:47 | 0:39:49
That's amazing! | 0:39:49 | 0:39:51
"I also want to make you an ambassador for the charity, | 0:39:55 | 0:39:58
"working directly with the CEO | 0:39:58 | 0:40:00
"to help support young people who are bereaved. | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
"And I want to act as a mentor to you in all your fundraising efforts. | 0:40:03 | 0:40:07
"Onwards and upwards, as we Calendar Girls say." | 0:40:07 | 0:40:10
There you are. | 0:40:12 | 0:40:14
There you are. | 0:40:22 | 0:40:24
-A few sunflowers for her. -Can I just ask you...? | 0:40:29 | 0:40:32
Let me carry it for you, darling. | 0:40:32 | 0:40:34
It's been quite a day. | 0:40:34 | 0:40:35
It is really heavy, wow! | 0:40:35 | 0:40:37
Put it down, it'll be fine. | 0:40:37 | 0:40:39
-Let me ask you, I know it's very emotional... -I'm sorry. | 0:40:39 | 0:40:42
Don't be sorry. | 0:40:42 | 0:40:43
Please, don't be sorry. | 0:40:43 | 0:40:45
I was gone before I even got onto the stage, to be honest with you. | 0:40:45 | 0:40:47
-How do you feel about all this? -Erm... | 0:40:47 | 0:40:50
throughout watching the theatre performance, there was just so much. | 0:40:50 | 0:40:55
Even the dressing gowns you were wearing... | 0:40:55 | 0:40:58
I've got one. And it was a bit like, | 0:40:58 | 0:41:01
"Oh, my God, she's wearing the same dressing gown." And, yeah, bizarre. | 0:41:01 | 0:41:04
Just so many... Just too much in common. | 0:41:04 | 0:41:07
And now an ambassador. | 0:41:07 | 0:41:09
I can't even take that in. | 0:41:09 | 0:41:10
And what am I doing on the stage? | 0:41:10 | 0:41:13
And finally, if you need a couple of models for your fashion show, | 0:41:16 | 0:41:20
then Angela and I are available. | 0:41:20 | 0:41:23
-But we're definitely going to keep our clothes on! -Definitely! | 0:41:23 | 0:41:27
Don't start. | 0:41:29 | 0:41:30
Ladies and gentlemen, it's been a very emotional day for Katie. | 0:41:30 | 0:41:33
I'm sure you'll join me in giving her a round of applause. | 0:41:33 | 0:41:35
But also, as we leave the stage, | 0:41:35 | 0:41:37
a massive round of applause for these guys. | 0:41:37 | 0:41:39
Incredible stars from The Girls! | 0:41:39 | 0:41:42
CHEERING | 0:41:42 | 0:41:44
Oh, it's amazing. I can't comprehend it. | 0:41:51 | 0:41:53
I'm completely and utterly gobsmacked. | 0:41:53 | 0:41:55
I haven't taken it in. | 0:41:55 | 0:41:56
I actually just need to sit down and digest it, because I just... | 0:41:56 | 0:42:00
I don't know. I... | 0:42:00 | 0:42:01
Yeah, it's amazing. And... | 0:42:01 | 0:42:03
Yeah. | 0:42:03 | 0:42:04 | |
And I don't think she had any idea, really, what was happening. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:09
And I think she's kind of, you know, taking it all in. | 0:42:09 | 0:42:12
It'll take a while, I think. | 0:42:12 | 0:42:14
But, yeah, it was really, really good. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:16
I nearly didn't cry. But then I did a bit. | 0:42:16 | 0:42:18
But it was very emotional. | 0:42:18 | 0:42:20
-It was amazing. -Amazing and emotional. | 0:42:20 | 0:42:24
-Yeah. -Just so special. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:25
She didn't expect it at all. | 0:42:25 | 0:42:27
I think her and Angela had such a special connection | 0:42:27 | 0:42:30
that she gets why this is a really important step for her. | 0:42:30 | 0:42:33
And she will do amazingly with the fashion show. | 0:42:33 | 0:42:35
-Fashion's in good hands. -Definitely! | 0:42:35 | 0:42:37
It's an absolutely amazing opportunity for her and her life, | 0:42:37 | 0:42:39
and coming out of something so horrendous this happens, so... | 0:42:39 | 0:42:42
And Tom would be so proud. | 0:42:42 | 0:42:44
Well, what a privilege it was to see the joy on Katie's face just then. | 0:42:48 | 0:42:52
You know, Angela knew instinctively | 0:42:52 | 0:42:54
what Katie needed at this point in her life. | 0:42:54 | 0:42:56
And she was completely right. | 0:42:56 | 0:42:58
Combining Katie's love of fashion | 0:42:58 | 0:43:00
with a charity that she cares so deeply about was spot-on. | 0:43:00 | 0:43:03
And now Katie is going to be mentored | 0:43:03 | 0:43:05
by the Calendar Girls themselves. | 0:43:05 | 0:43:07
Well, that's the icing on the cake. | 0:43:07 | 0:43:09
How can I do a programme involving the WI | 0:43:09 | 0:43:11
and not even get to enjoy a slice of cake? | 0:43:11 | 0:43:14
Well, as they say, onwards and upwards. | 0:43:14 | 0:43:16 |
