We couldn't continue unless the audience wanted us to.

If you go back a year, when Jason left, there was

that moment where I just thought,

"We've been through many things but losing another member!

"I mean, not just Rob not being with us this time, but Jason going.

"I don't know. I don't know about this."

I remember that night crying.

We hadn't had the best year,

personally.

It hit home, because we were still, like, a week before, going,

"Ah, Jay, it'll be all right. Just do another tour with us.

"You'll be fine."

There was a lot of uncertainty around whether it was going to be

three, whether it would be four, or even whether we were going to end up

being five,

so we started the year not very sure where we were going to be.

If we hadn't decided then, "Let's do this as a three or at least have a

"go at doing it as a three," that would've been the end of the band.

-Yeah.

-You know, the thought of doing it was quite daunting.

-The thought of not doing it was...

-Worse.

-Worse, yeah.

I was on the phone to you

and you said, "What about doing it as a three?"

And I thought, "Bingo!"

That's exactly what I've been thinking in my head.

And I've been really fighting with it,

thinking whether it's going to work.

This was us putting out Jason's statement.

And literally sitting for 48 hours watching social media.

This wave of support and, "You've got to carry on!

"Please don't say it's the end!"

And it was just like you wanted to cry, because you thought

"Oh, thank goodness for that." We can carry on.

It's one thing wanting to, but we had the support,

we had our audience behind us,

and it's not just an audience - it's like an army, our crowd.

And we all met one day for lunch.

I came out of there thinking, "It's going to be like a new band, this."

Because we hadn't talked like that, really, since the '90s,

and I came out really excited.

We had to stop thinking, "Oh, there's somebody missing."

Or, "There's two people missing from the last tour."

You're still getting the essence and the energy and the

vibes of what Take That have always been

whether it's a three or a four or a five.

I think we've somehow managed to make it work.

We've designed it for a three.

And Jason is sorely missed,

but most people have come away happy with the show.

It's probably made our music better, probably made our tour better.

I think it makes you better when you're faced with the fact, "Wow.

"People might not want you to do this any more."

And that... That I hadn't felt for a while.

You know, I miss him. Everyone misses him.

It still makes me the ugliest, whether he's in or not.

It's so nice to be here.

You obviously haven't got a majority of teenage girls in the audience.

We have, like, 30-year-olds to 40-year-olds. That's the majority.

You see so many groups of guys in the audience now,

younger girls, kids with their parents, you know?

They just tickle me.

Your act in a way relies on there being an audience.

There's more time to appreciate what you've got

and appreciate what they've given to you

and the fact that they've supported you and followed you.

We started off building up our audience.

-Remember we used to throw flyers out?

-In a box, didn't we?

We had a box in the back of the van.

-Yeah.

-And we first started getting fan mail.

I think it was quite competitive.

-What, cos I had the most?

-No, no.

You didn't have the most. Mark started getting the most.

I used to put some of Mark's in my pile to make it look higher.

-I remember the first time our van got chased. Wasn't many.

-10.

It was about ten. It was about ten. They chased after the van.

And they followed us back to about Leeds and then thought,

"Hang on a minute.

"They're going home."

-Gone a bit far.

-Can't be bothered going the rest of the way.

-It was a health hazard, that van.

-We lived in that van.

We lived in it.

I seem to remember us breaking down on the motorway.

Oh, we did, at Portsmouth.

And we were running down in our Do What You Like outfits,

in our leather gear.

And we had mike stands and all that leather clobber,

running down the hard shoulder.

-We didn't run to the gig, did we?

-No, we got a taxi.

-Got a taxi there?

-We flagged a taxi down at the roundabout.

When they saw us, they wished we'd stayed on the hard shoulder, though.

Everywhere we were going, I think

we were going through the backs of the kitchens.

It was always hysteria, wasn't it?

There was never a chance, really, to kind of take it in.

I felt like we spent the whole of the '90s running

away from our audience.

Now they're running away from us!

But it's different now, though.

People are coming up to me all the time, but it's lovely.

Cos they only want to say nice things.

It's really warming when you see the people that have been

there from the very beginning and you see them on the front row.

I think every time I go on stage, I think

I go on with the feeling that this is my last show.

I didn't have that when I was young

because I thought it would go on forever.

You see here, me and Mark normally sit on this side

because Gary always put that sign there.

Reserved, because he doesn't want anyone sitting next to him.

I don't even know who's writing that is. It's your writing.

It's been four years since we've been on stage together, really.

We had to find our space again and our way to perform again

and that takes time.

If we were to come off stage after our first Scottish dates

and most of the people were saying, "Oh, I don't really like it

"that much" or, "The other tour was better," it would be so upsetting.

It would really get to me, it really would.

It would touch a nerve because we love doing live

more than anything else.

Essentially, the ideas come from the guys.

They always sit down and discuss

and talk about what they want to do and throw ideas about.

All are involved with every aspect.

I think Mark leads the creative process.

He draws a lot and comes in with a lot of sketches.

He's come up with some amazing stuff for this tour.

It started off with drawings, pencil drawings,

really bad ones on backs of disused paper, drawing plans.

We wanted something that was very colourful and positive.

I'm really, really proud of it, to be honest.

I think everybody has done really well.

We've got an amazing crew, amazing cast.

About 70% of our crew, they've been with us

since about '92 and they're with us because they're good.

They're not just with us because it's a habit.

That's a great working environment, that is.

They know what we want, they know what we don't want

and people make it work.

Kim, well he's our fourth member at the moment.

He just plucks ideas out and he takes our ideas and puts them into reality.

Their success has been their live show.

The longevity is there

because of the effort that they put into their shows.

He's eyes, because when you're up on the stage doing what you do,

you don't know how it looks but he's our eyes.

He's honest and will come up to us and say,

"That's not right, that's not working, this isn't working."

It's all the people who just care for us.

They just... They just look after us and they work hard for us.

It's so great to have that. It takes years, doesn't it?

Even though they were a put together band, there's a bond there

and an understanding which a lot of bands, equivalent bands,

don't ever really achieve and you have to have that.

I was the biggest Take That fan.

I went to my first concert when I was 11 at Wembley.

I remember crying when Robbie left.

I had the sticker books, I had the lot.

We've had quiz nights with Gary Barlow being the quizmaster,

so it's just really nice to get to know them on that level, as well.

They don't feel distant from you, you know,

you feel like they're actually part of the group and part of the cast.

They've always been about the show

and putting on the best possible two hours that they can.

To see them all willing us on, we feel like everyone is going,

"Go on, you can do it."

It's like watching the Grand National

and you're on that final lap and everyone is going, "Go on, go on!"

The three of us are one part of the show, but then every division,

every department of our company, which is a lot of people,

they all have their show, as well.

When we weren't sure and feeling a bit... Are we doing all right?

I think, probably, everybody at one point, came up to us and said,

"You've got another show here. You've done it."

And that was really nice for them to say, really nice to hear them

say it, because they know.

I started in the working men's clubs.

Saw hundreds of acts over the years come through.

The ones that always stuck out, are the ones who went

that extra bit further.

They had a costume change, they had a little backdrop to

perform in front of and the audience always responded to it.

I was at Butlins with my mum.

I saw these Latin American dancers and I turned round to my mum

and said, "I want to dance." My mum said, "Yes."

My dad, once a year, used to take me to a circus called

the Bellevue Circus and I remember crowds of people,

people everywhere all around, and I remember

holding on to my parents or my brother and my sister and just

being in the whole atmosphere of people being swept along.

We want people to have that feeling when they come to our shows,

not quite knowing what to expect, not knowing

where the next thing is coming from.

We want to save thank you to the audience and to the crowd

and that's why we put so much into those shows.

It's like you want to give them all these lovely surprises,

these presents.

It's the best way we know how to say thank you for allowing us

to do this for all this time.

As much or maybe more than ever, people are just going,

"It is so deep, it is so rich. There's so much stuff going on."

We want people to stand there in amazement at the lights

and the set and that's what we want.

That's a happy fan.

We want to give them a whole world of fantastical stuff.

The fans come and they see 14 shows, different cities

and they still see things that they haven't seen before.

We wanted to do something special for The Garden.

It is such a beautiful song and the words are great

and it evokes a lovely emotion and we thought, right,

let's create a little story that we're going under the sea.

It's beautiful to see live puppetry.

When I first saw that, I choked up.

When I first saw them doing that, I was like,

"Oh, my God, that is so pretty, so beautiful and so simple."

It's the kind of music that I like. Sgt Pepper-ish.

It's a fun section for us to do. The imagery is fantastic.

It's very uplifting, as well.

It's lovely being inside there. It's such a beautiful feeling.

The lights and watching the guys do their thing.

And it opens up and it's all those people, the colour changes

and we're in our underwater outfits.

The curtain that closes and the puppet show and when it opens,

there's this magical, colourful garden and I think

that's a real magical moment.

The amount of stuff that's going on behind you

and how it's placed and stuff like that, it's...

It's mind-blowing.

We see in the people's eyes, the colours...

They burst and that's beautiful.

It's like going from black-and-white TV to when colour TV came

and it's so lovely to see.

I always think it's about making a connection with the audience.

The bike gave us the most amazing way to do that,

because we were literally hanging over everybody.

I remember the first time we took it up for a spin.

It lifted off and the three of us

were on this bike pedalling round this studio in London.

It was that ET moment when he's going, "No, no, is it?"

And it just takes off and it goes across the moon.

In my head, that was happening.

All these hardened roadies were waving at us

with big smiles on their faces.

I thought, our crowd is going to love this.

If it can do that to them boys, the audience are going to love it.

It's a funny feeling being above the fans and a great moment.

I've seen it every night and I'm like, "Oh, my God, this is amazing."

I look forward to it all night.

The greatest bit is always seeing the faces of the audience

and Howard in his cap, in the sidecar, steering the bike.

I'll remember that for a long time.

It's the 16th version of Relight.

It's always challenging to take a song that you've done several

times into a new area.

We thought it would be a great idea to go very Japanese.

When we first started talking about this tour,

right from the word go, Howard wanted to step up

and do something which would showcase his movements.

He came in with the idea that it would be really nice to be

able to do something of that nature on this show.

I always knew how wonderful contemporary dance was.

I just thought, why can't we do something completely different

where no-one would expect us to do.

So the idea of doing it to Flaws, which, I'll be honest,

bit of a relief, because I thought, "Oh, that's funny, I've got to sing.

"OK, you guys get on with that."

None of us could dance in Jason's style.

Jason was always full of energy

and he would have been brilliant at this contemporary piece.

In a funny way, I feel like it is something we wanted to do for Jay.

I thought, well, contemporary is going to be a challenge.

We are either absolutely going to look rubbish or...

..or we're going to pass and get away with it.

At one point in rehearsals, we couldn't get it right

and we were getting all frustrated.

I remember Kim, at one point, saying,

"Stop thinking about the moves, stop thinking about it.

"Just listen to the words and express it."

For Kim to say that to us, usually, you're told, point, turn left,

turn right.

He was like, "It's not about that, it's about what you give

"and what you feel."

It's very physical and it's again, trying to express your emotion

as you're doing it.

One of the worst things, is when you come off knackered

and you have to put these pants on that are really tight and you're

trying to pull them up your legs and your legs are all sweaty

and you're thinking,

"Oh, God, I just don't have the energy to even pull my pants up."

But, all worth it, so worth it.

Honestly, to see the work, the detail that they both put into that song,

right there, I knew we had the moment, then.

Where I'm stood, it's amazing. I love to watch it, as well.

It's a very fragile song, in a way, for us, and it gave us chance to

express ourselves and almost put the 20 years, the 23 years before,

into a piece. That's what I feel when I'm doing it.

I feel like it's our journey as a band.

And when Howard picks me up and I catch him,

I feel like that is what it's all about.

It's about friendship and looking after each other.

I guess we've done that, over the years, for each other, as a band.

All of us.

The one thing I never used to do in the '90s,

was I never used to stop and go, "Wow, look where we are,

"We're in Denmark, we've started our European Tour."

I never did that. I was always a year ahead of everyone.

I know it used to drive the lads mad.

Everything was so fast and furious

and you didn't even have time to think. You didn't even have a life.

Life was Take That.

And because I was so busy looking ahead,

I never enjoyed what was right there.

I don't really remember having that time to take in where we were

or what we were doing.

I don't know whether I really, to be honest,

had the mental capacity to do that.

Everything was so fast. We were doing it for...

I don't know, I don't know what I was doing before that, then.

It was just like a machine, I think.

It always felt like everyone was out for themselves in the '90s.

It wasn't really bad, the first time, it was just really lost

when we were young.

You can just be more open, open with Mark and Gary and, you know, we talk

so much more about music and about writing and we're all so much...

So much more involved in everything.

I think the second time round, for us, it comes from down here,

you know everything comes and it hurts down here.

It never hurt the first time, but everything hurts here.

Right in the gut of your stomach and when something is great, you feel it

down here and when something is not great, you really feel it down here.

I've really made a point, nearly on a daily basis going,

"Wow, this is great, this is really brilliant to be here."

We used to go to them radio road shows

and there would be acts bigger than us on there.

But there was definitely a point, and I remember it, when we'd turn up

and I realised we're getting big now, because we were like...

They'd leave us till the end.

I remember that was the first time I sort of met Sonia, from the '80s.

-I was starstruck. She had a bit of a thing for you, didn't she?

-Shush!

Jimmy Somerville was in the audience, wasn't he?

I think word got around that he said, "They're not singing live."

You could tell we weren't singing live because we had these

little Tandy plastic microphones and some didn't even have the tops on.

Little wire dangling down at the bottom.

-We'd have one live mike between us.

-We'd pass it round.

We'd pass it round for different parts.

If Rob had to do a rap, we'd discreetly pass the mic

so he could do his rap and then to you.

Every time it came to me I'd go... And then it'd get taken away.

It would get taken off me quickly.

I saw Howard had his eyes closed and he looked like he was almost

meditating and getting himself into a place

and I saw Gaz doing his thing to get himself ready.

I saw how much it meant to them.

I was seeing all the people milling around and all the wardrobe

and where the costumes are and I was thinking,

this is all for us three, this.

Sometimes you have to pinch yourself and get a grip of it.

So many months ago, it was all just starting with little ideas

and little drawings on pieces of paper and then it's travelled all

over Europe and so many people have been involved,

and then in it all comes to an end.

It's a little bit crazy, really.
