round of violence to the West Bank. In some cases the attackers have

been young teenagers armed with kitchen knives. But Gush Etzion

junction has been one site of many attacks and it is used by many

sectors. It used to be a ways Palestinians would also shop work

but now people are frightened. Being the could cost them dear lives. This

film contains disturbing images from the start. -- their lives.

violence. Palestinian protesters have been throwing stones, Israeli

soldiers have been fighting back. I've come to the Gush Etzion

Junction, a flash point for this upsurge in attacks to see what it

can reveal about the future of the Israel/ Palestinian conflict. The

Gush Etzion junction is a place with special significance in a

decades-old struggle. The roundabout is on the main road between

Jerusalem and Hebron. It is in the West Bank which the Palestinians

want for an independent state. But this part remains under school is

really control. It is a magnet for violence. In the early 20th-century,

it Jews bought land here. Infighting with Arab armies in 1948, they were

forced out or killed. Jews returned in 1967 after Israel captured the

alia and work down to rebuild Kfar Etzion. It was the first settlement

in the occupied West Hank after the war. Settlements are Jewish

immunities built on occupied land, they are considered illegal under

international law but Israel disagrees. Gush Etzion, Hebrew for

the Etzion bloc is now larger than the original sites. More than 20,000

people live in the original settlements and much of it is ill on

confiscated Palestinian land. Today, this junction is one of the few

places in the West Bank where Israelis and Alistair means

constantly cross parts. My work as a reporter often rings me here and it

is often tense. Three years ago three teenaged hitchhikers were

kidnapped and murdered nearby. These candles were laid out earlier in a

show of grief for the dead Israelis. They spell out their name. Since

then there have been striking changes at the roundabout. It looks

like a battle ground. As well as soldiers, local settlements have

their own security. Daniel, a British Israeli, has recently seen

about one doesn't deadly incidents here. At this junction every stone,

every flag, every bus stop has seen a terror attack. For some it has

ended better meaning we have been able to neutralise the threat before

it approached any civilians standing here but unfortunately where we are

standing now we lost in two separate attacks to macro civilians. I have

seen stuff I would not like to have seen and I would like to forget most

of it but it is part and parcel of the job. What kind of people live in

the Gush Etzion area? There are people live here with children and

there are a small few who are trying to install terror and prevent the

Israelis from leading a quiet and peaceful life within the immunities.

In the last few months Daniel has been in a constant state of high

alert but today seems calm on his patrol until we return to the

roundabout. What is on here? We have to get out of the car. Daniel rushes

to help a lone soldier checking passengers trying to get them out of

date minibus. The Army is imposing tough new restrictions on

Palestinians, it says, to prevent attacks. They are not allowed to get

out of the junction, in the vicinity of the junction, an encounter like

this now can have a lasting effect at on the other hand the soldiers

are in a situation where the cannot not do it. We have to do it. At the

Gush Etzion junction there is also a large shopping area. The supermarket

bustles with Israeli families. It is at the centre of local community

life. Alistair means used to be free to visit but now they need the right

ID to enter. -- Palestinians used to be free to enter. There was a

stabbing outside the door last year. We see on state television video and

cartoons calling to become a marker, stab a Jew, stab an Israeli. You do

not think it is anything to do with the Israeli occupation with the

presence of settlements year? I do not believe that, it has been

carried out by Palestinian Muslims and when they look into the

assailants background they see a similar pattern, brainwashed through

Facebook, has seen videos, has heard what has been said in mosques on

Friday and ticked up a knife and on and tried to or succeeded in cooling

or maiming Jews. -- cooling or maiming. This is the third holiest

compound, Jews call it Temple Mount and it is also the holiest site. It

lies at the heart of the conflict. Last year with hopes of a political

solution further away than ever the latest round of violence began right

here. Clashes broke out between Israeli police and Palestinians. As

Jews visited during religious holidays, fears grew that Israel had

plans to change a rule that forbids non-Muslims from playing at the

site. Then, in October, a Palestinian teenager stabbed to

death to Jewish men in an old city street before he was shot to death.

Militant groups like how mass seized the initiative. An Israeli TV show

was had with this chilling cartoon calling the attacker a marker and

urging others to follow in his footsteps. In six months some 30

Israelis have been killed and around 200 Palestinians, most while

allegedly carrying out attacks. On the outskirts of Hebron this is the

home of one Palestinian attacker. Last October, the 19-year-old

returned home from his night shift at eight poultry farm. His father

thought he had gone to bed but he had sneaked back out of the house.

He had joined large crowds at a protest in Hebron against Israeli

actions. I was there that day. Palestinian protest 's have been

throwing stones, is really soldiers have been fighting back with tear

gas, rubber bullets and live bullets. Filled with anger, he and a

friend headed to Gush Etzion junction.

At the junction, the two Palestinians approached an Israeli

soldier and stabbed him in the face. Immediately, other troops shot both

of them dead. The Israeli army raided his house

soon after the attack. Many of the boy's possessions were taken away.

The family has only these photographs left.

His father himself is a former militant who spent ten years in an

Israeli jail but he said his son was not politically motivated in the way

he was. He was impulsive, inspired by social media.

But many deadly incident at the Gush Etzion junction are not so clear

cut. Instead, there are conflicting Israeli and Palestinian narratives

that reflect the deepening mutual mistrust. Israel's army said the

woman carrying -- driving this car piled into soldiers and was shot

dead. A knife was found on her dashboard. There were reports this

women had committed suicide after arguing with her husband but in her

village the mourners tell a different story. Her husband says

his wife was frightened and took a wrong turn at the junction.

The family claim Israel used excessive force to stop part and I'm

shown her clothes, riddled with bullet holes.

The circumstances surrounding her death remain uncertain but the

impact on her family is clear. Like many Palestinians, Mohammed had a

job in an Israeli settlement and now his work permit has been revoked.

His 16-year-old daughter tries to be strong.

This is the daily routine for some 4500 Palestinians, lining up to work

in Gush Etzion. The error and more working for sectors than the good in

their own towns and villages. -- Allan Moore. At the junction a new

model is being built. While most Palestinians object to the expansion

of settlements, very often it is here on people doing the

construction. It is an uneasy economic relationship and yet, in

Gush Etzion, many Israelis see it as a model for coexistence. The

settlement here is just a few hundred metres from the Gush Etzion

roundabout. It is breakfast time for this family. Since November they

have been without their father. A Palestinian gunman shot him dead, he

was a teacher. His oldest son is our putting on a brave face. You guys

have your dad's smile. Everyone talks about his smile. The

community, the talk about his smile. The brothers organise their lives

around the religious studies and the synagogue. The miss the father but

their faith is giving them strength to carry on. We are going to

continue to be a happy and strong family and continue smiling the

cause of what we are and what she made us. The father moved to Gush

Etzion to attend a Jewish ceremony -- seminary and stayed to have his

family. We are a deep and thinking people, a peaceful people, it is

important to be here. This is historically a very important place

to Jewish people. Every time these mothers leave the settlement they

must pass the spot where their father was killed in a drive-by

shooting. The gunman fired indiscriminately at a line of

traffic in the junction. An American and a Palestinian driver were also

shot dead. Abel are just so full of hate, they just want to kill, do not

want any peace at all. -- people are just so full of hate. The brothers

are doing the shop in the supermarket. They used to see it as

a place of hope where Israelis and Palestinians good mix. Now they say

it has become a target. A symbol for a peaceful place is weird terrorists

come to attack. We want to attack the fact of us living us together

here in a peaceful way so they do what they do and attack and try to

murder, try to show as we are not belonging here what we do belong

here. Israel was Mike by Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rushed to the

Gush Etzion junction to show his support after the first Israelis

were killed here last year. He promised the army free rein to fight

back. Settlers are demanding more be done to keep them safe. They have

powerful voices within Israel's government. At this rally, soldiers

guard is really is passing Palestinian homes to reach the

roundabout. There have been several protests here at the junction at

this is a particularly bold and provocative one. These are settlers

who are outraged at the ongoing Palestinian attacks and the say when

the attacks take place this whole area should be closed to Palestinian

traffic for the security. What we want is to block the roads at least

for the next few weeks for Arabs recall as we can't live like this

and we should not live like this in our country. We are playing Russian

roulette every single day as we get in our cars and dry down the road.

It really is that serious of a situation. But in this Palestinian

village here is a different perspective. It is surrounded by the

Gush Etzion settlements and this man says life has become risky with new

security measures at the roundabout. Already, Alastair means year feel

great resentment. They are forgiven -- Palestinians feel great

resentment. They are forbidden from building.

The villagers have lost part of the land to the settlements. Most can no

longer in a living from their own farms.

While his family sleeps, Mohammed sets off to his job in the

settlement. At the Gush Etzion junction,

Palestinian and Israeli lives intersect. For sectors like Daniel

this roundabout represents the dangers they face every day. Once

this all stops and they stop coming to tell us it will go back to how it

was. The status quo will be resumed. Until then, both the army and the

council are real and of allowing Palestinians to roam freely around

here. For Palestinians like this man whose son was killed stabbing a

soldier, Hush Etzion is a symbol of Israel's occupation. -- Gush Etzion.

Those living around the junction, including these sons who lost their

father, they are determined to stay here and I expect the news to bring

me back. For two years there have been no peace talks between Israel

and the Palestinians. From the first few arrivals in 1967, there are now

over half a million settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Hush

Etzion offers a worrying glimpse of a future where both sides in this

conflict continued to live with simmering tension and outbreaks of

violence.
