Across Scotland we've all been wrestling with a big decision.

0:00:050:00:10

There's no escaping September 18th and the campaign for our votes.

0:00:130:00:18

DEBATE PLAYS I cannae stand it.

0:00:180:00:20

Oh, dear.

0:00:200:00:22

Vote Yes and if it doesn't work out move countries!

0:00:220:00:25

Maybe I'll move to Ibiza!

0:00:250:00:27

For the last four months our cameras have been in homes across Scotland.

0:00:270:00:31

Big and small, in town and in the country.

0:00:310:00:35

And if things have been a bit heated round your dinner table,

0:00:350:00:38

you can take comfort - you're not the only ones.

0:00:380:00:42

I'm British. I was born British and...

0:00:420:00:45

-You were born in Scotland.

-I was born British.

0:00:450:00:47

You were born in Scotland, so you're Scottish.

0:00:470:00:50

So join us for the story of the summer

0:00:500:00:52

as real Scots ponder...

0:00:520:00:54

Independence? Mibbes Aye, Mibbes Naw.

0:00:540:00:59

And I'll be like, "That's it. Let's get voting."

0:01:000:01:02

Our cameras have spent the last four months in the homes of voters.

0:01:210:01:26

From castles to council flats, we've followed Scots from wealthy

0:01:260:01:31

and poorer backgrounds.

0:01:310:01:32

MUSIC: West Coast by Lana Del Rey

0:01:340:01:37

A few have always known how they'll vote,

0:01:420:01:44

but most started the campaign with an open mind.

0:01:440:01:48

Here's what you missed last time.

0:01:510:01:54

Shipmates Frank and Stewart are still charting different courses

0:01:540:01:57

on the referendum.

0:01:570:01:58

Farmers Alison and Danny

0:02:000:02:02

have been struggling to find the time to decide.

0:02:020:02:04

Shaun thought he'd gone Yes, then wasn't so sure.

0:02:060:02:10

At the castle, Simon was showcasing Scotland,

0:02:110:02:13

but still a strong No,

0:02:130:02:16

and Jessica swung to Yes but hasn't told her fiance.

0:02:160:02:20

He said he'll divorce me if I vote Yes.

0:02:200:02:23

And that's what you missed on Mibbes Aye, Mibbes Naw.

0:02:230:02:27

It's now only weeks away from the big vote.

0:02:340:02:38

Throughout the campaign we've given our voters some homework -

0:02:380:02:41

campaign highlights to while away the nights.

0:02:410:02:45

In mid-August it was round one between the two high heid yins.

0:02:450:02:50

This is the best bit, actually, when they cross-examine each other.

0:02:500:02:53

-I like that bit.

-Oh, I've not seen this.

0:02:530:02:55

And welcome back to the first referendum debate

0:02:570:03:00

between First Minister Alex Salmond and Better Together leader

0:03:000:03:04

Alistair Darling.

0:03:040:03:05

Now you said you want a currency union.

0:03:050:03:07

What's a currency union?

0:03:070:03:09

Seems to me a like getting a divorce

0:03:090:03:11

and keeping the same joint bank account.

0:03:110:03:13

Why does he keep going on about the currency?

0:03:130:03:15

It's like the only argument he's got.

0:03:150:03:17

It's no, but it's the biggest argument.

0:03:170:03:20

-SALMOND:

-It's logical and desirable to have a currency union.

0:03:210:03:25

If you go independent you've got fully independent.

0:03:250:03:27

That's good, then, it means we'd that way we write off the debt

0:03:270:03:30

that we've got, then.

0:03:300:03:32

Well, my wife told me that the best thing to do is to do away

0:03:320:03:35

with the pound because then I couldn't go to the pub.

0:03:350:03:39

In that case you said something you knew was not true.

0:03:400:03:44

I don't like that.

0:03:440:03:45

So as a Scottish MP who disavows such things, who doesn't think

0:03:450:03:49

that we're going drive on the right-hand side of the road

0:03:490:03:52

or be susceptible to attacks from outer space...

0:03:520:03:54

They're jokes, ya pillock!

0:03:540:03:56

HE SNORES

0:03:570:03:59

Huh?

0:03:590:04:00

You got 12 minutes to ask questions of the other side

0:04:000:04:03

and you waste your time asking did these people

0:04:030:04:06

make sarky comments.

0:04:060:04:08

Let's listen to the answer.

0:04:080:04:09

Answer it, answer it!

0:04:090:04:11

-That's my opinion.

-There's no answers for it.

0:04:110:04:15

Half the questions that people are asking won't be answered

0:04:150:04:17

till we get the chance to get the chance to become independent.

0:04:170:04:20

Until we're independent, that is when we'll find out.

0:04:200:04:22

-It's no worth risking...

-I don't care, it's a risk worth taking.

0:04:220:04:25

-It is in my opinion.

-You'll take a risk like that for him...

-Yeah.

0:04:250:04:28

-It is, yeah.

-Cara any other kids we have.

-Yep, uh-huh. Yep, totally.

0:04:280:04:31

-Mm-hmm, yep. Mm-hmm.

-You're havin' a laugh.

0:04:310:04:34

It's a big day in the south-side of Glasgow,

0:04:500:04:53

and at the heart of it is Ria Din.

0:04:530:04:56

It's a Pollokshields-wide greenspace festival.

0:04:590:05:02

It's pretty much free for all activities.

0:05:020:05:05

There you are, that's the full programme.

0:05:070:05:09

'I was born in Glasgow about mile and a half from here.'

0:05:090:05:13

My heritage is that my dad came over from Pakistan in the mid '50s

0:05:130:05:19

and my mum was born in the Gorbals but with Irish parents.

0:05:190:05:22

So quite an interesting mixture.

0:05:220:05:25

I think being mixed race, and, you know, there's no doubt about it,

0:05:270:05:30

we suffered from racism as children

0:05:300:05:33

and I just didn't feel that I belonged.

0:05:330:05:36

You know, never really felt Scottish until recently.

0:05:360:05:39

For Ria, the referendum represents a time for Scotland to take control.

0:05:410:05:46

I think the time's right.

0:05:460:05:48

I think we're mature enough as a nation.

0:05:480:05:50

I believe people should vote Yes and I'm going to vote Yes.

0:05:500:05:54

It's because I feel that this is the right thing to do.

0:05:540:05:57

Just a few miles down the road,

0:06:080:06:10

Laird Simon has been hosting the Crawford clan from North America.

0:06:100:06:14

We were at Bannockburn Live and the pipe festival,

0:06:220:06:25

and you ask me is that going to change my mind.

0:06:250:06:27

No way would it change my mind.

0:06:270:06:28

I still think Scotland's the best country in the world,

0:06:280:06:31

but it doesn't need to be independent to be the best country in the world.

0:06:310:06:34

The haggis!

0:06:350:06:36

He may live in a castle, but there's no lazing about.

0:06:510:06:55

Having waved off his guests,

0:06:570:06:59

our modern laird is now test-running his up and coming annual mud run.

0:06:590:07:03

A lot of people relatively local come enjoy the estate,

0:07:040:07:08

have a laugh. A lot of people raise money for charities, lots of teams,

0:07:080:07:12

so, lots of families... Nice time for everybody.

0:07:120:07:16

No doubt in anyone's mind the way I'm going to vote.

0:07:170:07:20

MUSIC: Nobody To Love by Sigma

0:07:200:07:23

It's now only weeks away from the vote.

0:07:560:07:59

Simon's race is run, but the campaign is picking up pace.

0:07:590:08:03

All in all, it's been interesting.

0:08:070:08:10

I think the campaign has been a little bit more...

0:08:100:08:14

..er...

0:08:150:08:17

spirited would be a polite way of putting it on the Yes side

0:08:170:08:19

than the No side.

0:08:190:08:21

Today Ria is out in Dunoon

0:08:260:08:28

and comes across something rather interesting.

0:08:280:08:31

Perhaps Alex Salmond's holiday caravan, I'm no very sure.

0:08:310:08:34

We'll see. Could be.

0:08:360:08:38

Alex, are you in there?!

0:08:380:08:39

Nope, nope.

0:08:420:08:43

MUSIC: No Place I'd Rather Be By Clean Bandit

0:08:440:08:47

Today, Ria is visiting someone very special whom

0:08:480:08:52

she hasn't seen in a very long time.

0:08:520:08:56

KNOCKING

0:08:560:08:58

Sheila!

0:09:010:09:04

-How you doing, mate?

-I'm all right.

0:09:040:09:06

Great to see you.

0:09:060:09:07

Sheila was an old mucker of Ria's back in Pollokshields.

0:09:070:09:11

I'm just looking at my luscious locks

0:09:140:09:16

and your bum out the window.

0:09:160:09:18

Remember, that was at New Year's Eve.

0:09:180:09:20

But I don't remember when. When d'you think that is?

0:09:200:09:23

When and what for, I have no idea.

0:09:230:09:24

I know. I was trying to think... I think I look about 35.

0:09:240:09:28

We both look really young.

0:09:280:09:30

The hairstyles may have changed, but the friendship certainly hasn't.

0:09:300:09:35

And it's the big vote that's brought them back together.

0:09:350:09:39

Been in France for 18 years.

0:09:390:09:41

And, em...I think you could literally say

0:09:410:09:45

it was like an epiphany.

0:09:450:09:46

I think I woke up one day in March and just went,

0:09:460:09:48

"Hold on a minute, this is...I can't stay here."

0:09:480:09:52

I can't stay here while there's a referendum going on in my country.

0:09:520:09:56

Exactly.

0:09:560:09:58

"It doesn't matter, I'll stay at home here on Montpellier

0:09:580:10:00

"and sip my red wine on the terrace and look at Sky TV with the news."

0:10:000:10:04

And then, literally, one day I woke up

0:10:040:10:06

and thought, "I can't do that."

0:10:060:10:08

For Ria, there's also a sense of being at home for the first time.

0:10:130:10:17

My mum also being a big sort, you know, had an Irish background

0:10:180:10:21

and it was always Ireland you were was supposed to look to

0:10:210:10:24

or my dad, you know, his nation was Pakistan.

0:10:240:10:27

And I didn't feel part of Scotland.

0:10:270:10:30

But, you know, particularly in the latter part of my adult life

0:10:300:10:34

I've had the opportunity to feel part of Scotland.

0:10:340:10:37

I've explored it in more recent years,

0:10:370:10:39

which I didn't have the chance to do before.

0:10:390:10:41

We do have a shared idea of social justice

0:10:410:10:45

and that's critical for me.

0:10:450:10:46

Em...

0:10:460:10:48

I've been allowed to fulfil my ambition in Scotland,

0:10:480:10:52

and I cannot think of anywhere else I would rather be.

0:10:520:10:55

# When I am with you

0:10:550:10:56

# There's no place I'd rather be. #

0:10:560:11:01

Like Ria, Simon is passionate about Scotland,

0:11:070:11:09

but lately, has been experiencing

0:11:090:11:12

a rather uglier side of the referendum.

0:11:120:11:14

As you can see, someone disagrees with our opinion.

0:11:180:11:21

The sign got put up on Sunday morning,

0:11:210:11:24

the black spray paint was done on Monday morning,

0:11:240:11:28

less than 24 hours later,

0:11:280:11:30

and then a few hours later, the blue paint was done.

0:11:300:11:35

I think what's quite frightening about this is,

0:11:350:11:37

speaking to a couple of folk in the village

0:11:370:11:40

and they are of similar opinion to us, No Thanks,

0:11:400:11:44

but they say they're scared to actually express their opinions,

0:11:440:11:47

which I think is a really, really sad indictment

0:11:470:11:49

to a civilised society -

0:11:490:11:51

that you can't have an open debate and agree to differ from each other

0:11:510:11:56

but still respect each other's views.

0:11:560:11:58

It goes back to that thing,

0:11:580:11:59

that you can't be passionately nationalistic

0:11:590:12:03

in terms of Scotland as a nation and Scotland as a country

0:12:030:12:06

and vote No Thanks.

0:12:060:12:08

Shaun and his friend are voting for the first time,

0:12:190:12:22

but Shaun's mind has been changing like the weather.

0:12:220:12:25

Now I'm more for it, I think.

0:12:250:12:27

Over at the salon where Shaun works, owner Leo has popped in

0:12:330:12:37

to give his take to the virgin voters.

0:12:370:12:39

I'm voting No - being involved in the business sector,

0:12:410:12:44

there's too many questions needing to answered

0:12:440:12:47

and in the debates

0:12:470:12:49

they seem to answering questions with questions

0:12:490:12:51

rather than giving the answers we want to find out.

0:12:510:12:53

So you're voting Yes because your friends say their voting Yes?

0:12:530:12:56

But that's not you voting Yes - that's you following the leader.

0:12:560:13:01

But if I can't listen to the parliament or the government

0:13:010:13:04

cos I don't understand what they say,

0:13:040:13:05

I have to listen to friends and family and clients and you and everyone.

0:13:050:13:09

But you listen to everyone,

0:13:090:13:10

then after, you form your own opinion.

0:13:100:13:12

But you've got to go with what you want for the economy, you know?

0:13:120:13:17

I don't know what other people want.

0:13:170:13:19

It is my opinion - I'm voting Yes

0:13:190:13:22

because I think what I've heard and what I've listened to

0:13:220:13:25

and what I've seen in the news, the whole combination of it all...

0:13:250:13:28

For Leo, voting is clearly a hot topic.

0:13:300:13:34

I think some of the younger generation

0:13:340:13:36

is not taking it seriously as they should be

0:13:360:13:39

because this is not just about voting because of a vote -

0:13:390:13:42

this is about voting because of the future of the economy

0:13:420:13:44

and the future of my kids and other people's kids.

0:13:440:13:47

-INTERVIEWER:

-Thinking of anyone in particular?

0:13:470:13:50

HE LAUGHS

0:13:500:13:52

I'm not thinking of anyone in particular

0:13:520:13:55

but Shaun comes to mind.

0:13:550:13:56

HE LAUGHS

0:13:560:13:58

He's confusing me!

0:14:000:14:02

It's not a matter of confusing you.

0:14:020:14:04

I think, in order to make a proper decision,

0:14:040:14:07

you've got to look at it as a whole.

0:14:070:14:10

Look at what is Mr Salmond is saying,

0:14:100:14:13

what the people at No are saying

0:14:130:14:16

and then form your own opinion.

0:14:160:14:17

Despite Leo's little pep talk, Devon is still uncertain.

0:14:210:14:25

But perhaps a change of scene might help her decide.

0:14:250:14:29

I'll be on holiday just before it.

0:14:290:14:32

I'm just back in time for the voting,

0:14:320:14:34

so when I go there, I won't really be round people

0:14:340:14:37

who are talking about it,

0:14:370:14:38

so I could probably just make my own mind up when I'm away

0:14:380:14:41

and then come back with a clear head.

0:14:410:14:44

That's it - so many have been saying to me, the past few weeks...

0:14:440:14:46

-Over this side?

-Over that way.

0:14:460:14:48

More people have been saying to me, "No".

0:14:480:14:50

At first, all my friends have been saying, "Yes",

0:14:500:14:53

then the past couple of weeks,

0:14:530:14:54

so many more people are saying, "No", now.

0:14:540:14:56

That has been confusing me.

0:14:560:14:57

But I think I'm going to stick to my guns.

0:14:570:14:59

A client was saying today as well, you'll probably have a gut feeling.

0:14:590:15:04

And you'll end up just going with that, so...

0:15:040:15:07

Still waiting on that feeling!

0:15:070:15:09

SHE LAUGHS

0:15:090:15:10

Last time we saw farmer Danny and his wife Alison,

0:15:280:15:31

they were run off their feet keeping the farm going.

0:15:310:15:34

The truth is we haven't left the farm

0:15:350:15:37

in the last wee while,

0:15:370:15:38

so we probably haven't really had

0:15:380:15:40

the opportunity to...

0:15:400:15:41

-Talk much about it.

-Yeah.

0:15:420:15:44

Today, the couple are showing off the farm to fellow farmers.

0:15:530:15:57

So what's the view in the big barn?

0:15:580:16:01

I think the majority of people that I have spoken to

0:16:010:16:03

from the farming community

0:16:030:16:05

are in favour of the Better Together campaign.

0:16:050:16:08

I've spoken to a few who are Yes voters

0:16:090:16:13

and I think...there is definitely an element of peer pressure.

0:16:130:16:16

If most farmers have made up their minds,

0:16:160:16:20

the Milnes certainly haven't.

0:16:200:16:22

She's playing her cards pretty close to her chest

0:16:220:16:25

and I must admit I am too.

0:16:250:16:27

You know, trying to double bluff her, maybe.

0:16:270:16:29

I think our views are fairly similar.

0:16:290:16:32

It doesn't matters to either of us if we vote differently.

0:16:320:16:36

But I think, given we have the same moral values

0:16:360:16:38

and the same beliefs about what the opportunities

0:16:380:16:43

might look like for our children in the future,

0:16:430:16:45

I would be surprised if we voted differently.

0:16:450:16:48

Will we vote both the same way?

0:16:490:16:51

Yeah, I think we probably will. I think we probably will.

0:16:520:16:56

It's homework time again

0:17:000:17:01

and this time, it's round two of the leaders' debates.

0:17:010:17:05

Will our voters enjoy this one any more?

0:17:050:17:08

Both our contributors will now have the opportunity

0:17:140:17:16

to cross-examine one other,

0:17:160:17:18

although they've been doing a fair bit of that so far.

0:17:180:17:20

-Alistair Darling.

-Right - I want to go back to currency.

0:17:200:17:23

RIA GRUMBLES, IAN LAUGHS

0:17:230:17:26

..at our last debate that you made a better fist at explaining

0:17:270:17:30

what your Plan B is.

0:17:300:17:31

Off you go and tell me.

0:17:310:17:33

Well, I've heard of one-trick ponies

0:17:330:17:35

but this must be the most extraordinary thing tonight.

0:17:350:17:38

He gives three options, but which one will he go for?

0:17:380:17:41

Yeah, which is Plan B?

0:17:410:17:43

You'll end up stuck with all the debt -

0:17:430:17:46

debt, incidentally, which you and the current Chancellor

0:17:460:17:49

managed to accumulate 60%.

0:17:490:17:50

I'm all right - I've got four jars of home-made jam in the fridge

0:17:500:17:55

and a bag of flour, going to make wholemeal bread.

0:17:550:17:58

Is that allowed in an independent Scotland?

0:17:580:18:00

-Em...

-There's risk of losing the jam jars, too.

0:18:000:18:03

Will you be prepared

0:18:030:18:05

to support the sovereign will of the Scottish people

0:18:050:18:07

if the Yes side win the referendum?

0:18:070:18:09

Oh, God - yes, so, "If we get independence,

0:18:090:18:14

"are you still going to be Scottish?

0:18:140:18:16

"Are you still going to want the best for Scotland?"

0:18:160:18:18

"No, because I didn't get my way

0:18:180:18:20

"and I'm going to throw all my toys out the pram - boo-hoo!"

0:18:200:18:24

Is that what you want him to say, Alex?

0:18:240:18:26

THEY TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:18:260:18:28

Are you backing out the Yes side?

0:18:280:18:30

-GLENN CAMPBELL:

-Hang on - I want questions...

0:18:300:18:32

They don't give straight answers. They always say something...

0:18:320:18:35

That's what politicians do.

0:18:350:18:36

That is the policy we put forward.

0:18:360:18:38

THEY TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:18:380:18:40

Somebody should switch they microphones off.

0:18:440:18:47

See when they start talking over each other,

0:18:470:18:49

I cannae tune in!

0:18:490:18:51

You didn't step in at all!

0:18:510:18:52

Shh! Be quiet.

0:18:520:18:54

Why you're so strong on it, I can understand that.

0:18:540:18:57

I don't know what they're saying

0:18:570:18:58

cos you keep rabbling on about the same points over and over.

0:18:580:19:01

I'm trying to get my points across to you.

0:19:010:19:03

-Ooh...

-Don't you interrupt them as well.

0:19:030:19:04

enough people interrupting them.

0:19:040:19:06

The time is up.

0:19:060:19:07

-Thank God for that.

-Alistair, stop going on about the money.

0:19:070:19:10

We get the point.

0:19:100:19:12

Thank God.

0:19:120:19:14

-You're not even listening.

-I missed that bit.

0:19:140:19:16

LAUGHTER

0:19:160:19:18

Once upon a time, Jessica and Mark were in unison.

0:19:230:19:26

He's voting No as well.

0:19:280:19:30

But then she began having second thoughts.

0:19:300:19:33

Can you positively tell me that you know that we're going to survive?

0:19:330:19:37

No.

0:19:370:19:38

Boom, point proven.

0:19:380:19:40

After a long hard think, Jessica decided to switch to Yes.

0:19:430:19:47

-Are you totally, totally Yes?

-Mm-hm, totally.

0:19:470:19:49

But has she told fiance Mark about her change of heart?

0:19:550:20:00

I've changed my mind. I was so adamant that I was No

0:20:000:20:03

but I've done my research

0:20:030:20:05

and saw the right side, I've changed my mind.

0:20:050:20:09

Ach, she'd made her own decision so...

0:20:090:20:12

But I still think you're daft though.

0:20:120:20:16

Why'd you think I'm daft, though?

0:20:160:20:18

-You know why.

-Why?

0:20:180:20:19

We'll not benefit in any way from it.

0:20:190:20:21

-I've changed my mind...

-He was asked specifically,

0:20:210:20:24

-if things don't go to plan...

-..cos I've read all the information.

0:20:240:20:26

If things don't go the way you've planned them, what is your plan B?

0:20:260:20:29

-Just avoided it.

-I've watched the referendum debates

0:20:290:20:32

-and I think it's the best decision for Scotland.

-Alex Salmond knows...

0:20:320:20:35

The referendum may have brought old friends together

0:20:350:20:38

but it may be spoiling this couple's happily ever after.

0:20:380:20:42

-I'm not talking nonsense.

-You are talking nonsense.

0:20:420:20:44

-I'm making sense.

-Daddy is talking nonsense.

0:20:440:20:46

You say, "Be quiet, Dad, you're a midden." You tell him.

0:20:460:20:48

You tell him.

0:20:480:20:50

-"You're a midden, Dad."

-M-m-m-m.

-Team Salmond.

0:20:500:20:54

Midden or not, rest assured,

0:20:540:20:56

Jessica's Mum doesn't need to take her hat back -

0:20:560:20:59

the wedding's still on..

0:20:590:21:01

Fields that were once full of barley are now stubble and bales.

0:21:140:21:19

The vote is nearly here and Alison has made up her mind.

0:21:220:21:26

I think, for me,

0:21:270:21:29

I'm not willing to take a risk,

0:21:290:21:32

but I'm going to view it as rising to a challenge.

0:21:320:21:36

And I've decided that it's not about following a pipe dream,

0:21:360:21:41

it's about being ambitious

0:21:410:21:43

and for that reason, I have decided that I am going to vote Yes.

0:21:430:21:49

DANNY INHALES SHARPLY

0:21:490:21:50

I believe in something better for Scotland.

0:21:500:21:53

I'm kind of torn between the two.

0:21:530:21:55

One minute, I'm Yes, one minute, I'm No.

0:21:550:21:58

I suppose I'm a typical farmer sitting on the fence.

0:21:580:22:02

THEY CHUCKLE

0:22:020:22:04

Danny's still waiting for his gut to tell him what to do,

0:22:050:22:08

but it's looking like the couple might be taking different roads.

0:22:080:22:13

I think Scotland itself will cope quite comfortably,

0:22:130:22:16

it's just whether or not, as a nation together,

0:22:160:22:22

we should just stick together.

0:22:220:22:25

When these eggs got thrown at Jim Murphy,

0:22:250:22:28

that kind of put my back up a wee bit.

0:22:280:22:32

I was a bit disappointed that people would be doing such a thing.

0:22:320:22:35

I want everyone to get on together as a nation which we do just now.

0:22:350:22:39

I suppose whichever way you decide to go,

0:22:390:22:43

I can say with some level of confidence that I'm likely to

0:22:430:22:47

be more passionate about the direction in which we go.

0:22:470:22:52

I'm certainly passionate about it,

0:22:520:22:53

I'm maybe just not such a high-risk taker as you potentially are

0:22:530:22:56

because there is an element of risk, there's no question about it.

0:22:560:23:00

Even though Alison has made her decision, Danny will wait

0:23:020:23:05

and see what his gut ultimately tells him on the day.

0:23:050:23:09

This is my old pal, Frank.

0:23:180:23:21

Frank and Stewart have been chums for ever.

0:23:210:23:23

They also run a business together.

0:23:230:23:25

But their views on the referendum have been oceans apart.

0:23:250:23:29

I never have tried to persuade Stewart and I never will.

0:23:290:23:32

If he wants to listen to what I'm saying, it's fine.

0:23:340:23:38

I still have, in the back of my mind, that we're stronger together.

0:23:380:23:42

I'll just never listen to what he says.

0:23:420:23:45

It's mid-summer in Shetland,

0:23:510:23:52

which means it never gets dark.

0:23:520:23:55

Today, Frank is on dry land enjoying a barbecue.

0:23:550:23:58

CROWD SING FOLK SONG

0:23:580:24:02

The nearest train station to here is in Bergen, Norway.

0:24:060:24:10

Shetland and Orkney was given as a dowry to the Danish.

0:24:140:24:19

That marriage was never completed,

0:24:190:24:22

so therefore a lot of people in Shetland

0:24:220:24:25

still think that it's...

0:24:250:24:27

we're still a part of Scandinavia.

0:24:270:24:29

Can Frank convince Stewart, a determined No,

0:24:370:24:40

that Shetland is safe in an independent Scotland?

0:24:400:24:44

I've always been in favour of independence for Scotland.

0:24:440:24:48

So I knew exactly then what I know now,

0:24:500:24:55

how I was going to vote so...

0:24:550:24:58

But you're different.

0:24:580:24:59

Well, yeah, because I'm not Scottish, Frank, I'm Shetland.

0:25:010:25:06

It's part of Scotland, Shetland.

0:25:060:25:08

It is, I ken that.

0:25:080:25:11

Now, the way it's going for me now,

0:25:110:25:15

I've been doing an awful lot of hard thinking about this,

0:25:150:25:20

and...I ken nobody else from my house

0:25:200:25:24

will agree with what I'm going to say,

0:25:240:25:27

but I'm going to vote for it.

0:25:270:25:29

I've spoken with you, this wee boy that's always given me good advice,

0:25:330:25:36

that's been one of my best pals all my life.

0:25:360:25:39

And I'm voting for it.

0:25:430:25:45

Over a summer, a baby can grow into a wee boy.

0:25:530:25:57

People who don't even read the paper can end up excited about politics.

0:25:580:26:04

We've followed a small sample of voters

0:26:040:26:07

and their decisions don't tell us what Scotland will do.

0:26:070:26:10

But maybe their experiences tell us something about this special summer.

0:26:100:26:15

We've never voted before,

0:26:150:26:17

I'd never watched anything to do with politics,

0:26:170:26:19

hardly ever read the newspaper or nothing and I think it has.

0:26:190:26:22

It's been dead interesting

0:26:220:26:24

hearing different people's points of view and stuff.

0:26:240:26:26

I'm the same as you.

0:26:260:26:27

I've never ever thought about it before

0:26:270:26:29

and this is the first time I've been on the roll

0:26:290:26:31

and it is interesting

0:26:310:26:33

and maybe it'll make us, in the future,

0:26:330:26:36

vote more and take more of an interest.

0:26:360:26:39

-Before, it was like we're not really interested at all.

-I was not.

0:26:390:26:42

You've got some folk saying I've heard enough, I want it over with.

0:26:420:26:45

-Really?!

-Yeah, but I still cannae get enough.

0:26:450:26:48

No, you cannae. What you going to do after this?

0:26:480:26:50

What you going to tweet about?

0:26:500:26:52

Well, the next exciting bit is the fallout from it,

0:26:520:26:54

the negotiations, what the settlement's actually going to be.

0:26:540:26:59

Whether it's Yes people villainising No

0:26:590:27:02

or whether it's No people villanising Yes,

0:27:020:27:05

I think its bang out of order.

0:27:050:27:06

We're in a free country with freedom of speech

0:27:060:27:08

and we should all be allowed to express our opinions

0:27:080:27:11

without the fear of retribution.

0:27:110:27:12

-It's interesting, the level of passion it has, actually.

-Yeah.

0:27:120:27:17

And the fact that it's going to be as close as it's going to be,

0:27:170:27:20

it'll be interesting to see what happens after the vote

0:27:200:27:23

cos there's going to be an awful lot of disappointed people, whichever way it goes.

0:27:230:27:26

We're old hippies with the boat and we love that but...

0:27:310:27:35

I have never been a hippie! Where you get this hippie from?!

0:27:350:27:40

I'm a hippie.

0:27:400:27:41

I don't want to be called a hippie!

0:27:410:27:43

-You is a hippie.

-I'm no a hippie.

0:27:430:27:45

Look at the jumpers you wear.

0:27:450:27:48

I'm no wearing a jumper.

0:27:480:27:49

When you does.

0:27:490:27:51

HE LAUGHS

0:27:510:27:52

-Maybe we need to get into it more.

-I know, definitely.

0:27:540:27:58

Never going to say I'm going to join the group or whatever.

0:27:580:28:00

-Debating club.

-I know, totally.

0:28:000:28:02

-I'd never say that but...

-THEY LAUGH

0:28:020:28:04

Whoo. High-five.

0:28:040:28:06

THEY LAUGH

0:28:080:28:10

I hope everybody in Scotland is going to be the same.

0:28:120:28:17

It wouldn't matter how you vote, everybody just...

0:28:170:28:21

You have to think of the bigger picture.

0:28:230:28:27

THEY LAUGH
