Across Scotland we've all been wrestling with a big decision. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:10
There's no escaping September 18th and the campaign for our votes. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:18
DEBATE PLAYS I cannae stand it. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
Oh, dear. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
Vote Yes and if it doesn't work out move countries! | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
Maybe I'll move to Ibiza! | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
For the last four months our cameras have been in homes across Scotland. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
Big and small, in town and in the country. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
And if things have been a bit heated round your dinner table, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
you can take comfort - you're not the only ones. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
I'm British. I was born British and... | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
-You were born in Scotland. -I was born British. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
You were born in Scotland, so you're Scottish. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
So join us for the story of the summer | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
as real Scots ponder... | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
Independence? Mibbes Aye, Mibbes Naw. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:59
And I'll be like, "That's it. Let's get voting." | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
Our cameras have spent the last four months in the homes of voters. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:26
From castles to council flats, we've followed Scots from wealthy | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
and poorer backgrounds. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32

A few have always known how they'll vote, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
but most started the campaign with an open mind. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
Here's what you missed last time. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
Shipmates Frank and Stewart are still charting different courses | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
on the referendum. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
Farmers Alison and Danny | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
have been struggling to find the time to decide. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
Shaun thought he'd gone Yes, then wasn't so sure. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
At the castle, Simon was showcasing Scotland, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
but still a strong No, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
and Jessica swung to Yes but hasn't told her fiance. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
He said he'll divorce me if I vote Yes. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
And that's what you missed on Mibbes Aye, Mibbes Naw. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
It's now only weeks away from the big vote. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
Throughout the campaign we've given our voters some homework - | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
campaign highlights to while away the nights. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
In mid-August it was round one between the two high heid yins. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:50
This is the best bit, actually, when they cross-examine each other. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
-I like that bit. -Oh, I've not seen this. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
And welcome back to the first referendum debate | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
between First Minister Alex Salmond and Better Together leader | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
Alistair Darling. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
Now you said you want a currency union. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
What's a currency union? | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
Seems to me a like getting a divorce | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
and keeping the same joint bank account. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
Why does he keep going on about the currency? | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
It's like the only argument he's got. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
It's no, but it's the biggest argument. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
-SALMOND: -It's logical and desirable to have a currency union. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
If you go independent you've got fully independent. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
That's good, then, it means we'd that way we write off the debt | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
that we've got, then. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
Well, my wife told me that the best thing to do is to do away | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
with the pound because then I couldn't go to the pub. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
In that case you said something you knew was not true. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
I don't like that. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:45
So as a Scottish MP who disavows such things, who doesn't think | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
that we're going drive on the right-hand side of the road | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
or be susceptible to attacks from outer space... | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
They're jokes, ya pillock! | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
HE SNORES | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
Huh? | 0:03:59 | 0:04:00 | |
You got 12 minutes to ask questions of the other side | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
and you waste your time asking did these people | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
make sarky comments. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
Let's listen to the answer. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:09
Answer it, answer it! | 0:04:09 | 0:04:11
-That's my opinion. -There's no answers for it. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
Half the questions that people are asking won't be answered | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
till we get the chance to get the chance to become independent. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
Until we're independent, that is when we'll find out. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
-It's no worth risking... -I don't care, it's a risk worth taking. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
-It is in my opinion. -You'll take a risk like that for him... -Yeah. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
-It is, yeah. -Cara any other kids we have. -Yep, uh-huh. Yep, totally. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
-Mm-hmm, yep. Mm-hmm. -You're havin' a laugh. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
It's a big day in the south-side of Glasgow, | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
and at the heart of it is Ria Din. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
It's a Pollokshields-wide greenspace festival. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
It's pretty much free for all activities. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
There you are, that's the full programme. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
'I was born in Glasgow about mile and a half from here.' | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
My heritage is that my dad came over from Pakistan in the mid '50s | 0:05:13 | 0:05:19
and my mum was born in the Gorbals but with Irish parents. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
So quite an interesting mixture. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
I think being mixed race, and, you know, there's no doubt about it, | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
we suffered from racism as children | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
and I just didn't feel that I belonged. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
You know, never really felt Scottish until recently. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
For Ria, the referendum represents a time for Scotland to take control. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:46
I think the time's right. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
I think we're mature enough as a nation. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:50
I believe people should vote Yes and I'm going to vote Yes. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
It's because I feel that this is the right thing to do. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
Just a few miles down the road, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
Laird Simon has been hosting the Crawford clan from North America. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:14
We were at Bannockburn Live and the pipe festival, | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
and you ask me is that going to change my mind. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
No way would it change my mind. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:28
I still think Scotland's the best country in the world, | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
but it doesn't need to be independent to be the best country in the world. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
The haggis! | 0:06:35 | 0:06:36
He may live in a castle, but there's no lazing about. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
Having waved off his guests, | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
our modern laird is now test-running his up and coming annual mud run. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
A lot of people relatively local come enjoy the estate, | 0:07:04 | 0:07:08
have a laugh. A lot of people raise money for charities, lots of teams, | 0:07:08 | 0:07:12
so, lots of families... Nice time for everybody. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:16
No doubt in anyone's mind the way I'm going to vote. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
MUSIC: Nobody To Love by Sigma | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
It's now only weeks away from the vote. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
Simon's race is run, but the campaign is picking up pace. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
All in all, it's been interesting. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
I think the campaign has been a little bit more... | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
..er... | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
spirited would be a polite way of putting it on the Yes side | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
than the No side. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
Today Ria is out in Dunoon | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
and comes across something rather interesting. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
Perhaps Alex Salmond's holiday caravan, I'm no very sure. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
We'll see. Could be. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
Alex, are you in there?! | 0:08:38 | 0:08:39
Nope, nope. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:43
MUSIC: No Place I'd Rather Be By Clean Bandit | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
Today, Ria is visiting someone very special whom | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
she hasn't seen in a very long time. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:56
KNOCKING | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
Sheila! | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
-How you doing, mate? -I'm all right. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
Great to see you. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:07
Sheila was an old mucker of Ria's back in Pollokshields. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
I'm just looking at my luscious locks | 0:09:14 | 0:09:16
and your bum out the window. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
Remember, that was at New Year's Eve. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:20
But I don't remember when. When d'you think that is? | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
When and what for, I have no idea. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:24
I know. I was trying to think... I think I look about 35. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
We both look really young. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
The hairstyles may have changed, but the friendship certainly hasn't. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:35
And it's the big vote that's brought them back together. | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
Been in France for 18 years. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
And, em...I think you could literally say | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
it was like an epiphany. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:46
I think I woke up one day in March and just went, | 0:09:46 | 0:09:48
"Hold on a minute, this is...I can't stay here." | 0:09:48 | 0:09:52
I can't stay here while there's a referendum going on in my country. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:56
Exactly. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
"It doesn't matter, I'll stay at home here on Montpellier | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
"and sip my red wine on the terrace and look at Sky TV with the news." | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
And then, literally, one day I woke up | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
and thought, "I can't do that." | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
For Ria, there's also a sense of being at home for the first time. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
My mum also being a big sort, you know, had an Irish background | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
and it was always Ireland you were was supposed to look to | 0:10:21 | 0:10:24
or my dad, you know, his nation was Pakistan. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
And I didn't feel part of Scotland. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
But, you know, particularly in the latter part of my adult life | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
I've had the opportunity to feel part of Scotland. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
I've explored it in more recent years, | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
which I didn't have the chance to do before. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:41
We do have a shared idea of social justice | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
and that's critical for me. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:46
Em... | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48 | |
I've been allowed to fulfil my ambition in Scotland, | 0:10:48 | 0:10:52
and I cannot think of anywhere else I would rather be. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
# When I am with you | 0:10:55 | 0:10:56
# There's no place I'd rather be. # | 0:10:56 | 0:11:01
Like Ria, Simon is passionate about Scotland, | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
but lately, has been experiencing | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
a rather uglier side of the referendum. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
As you can see, someone disagrees with our opinion. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
The sign got put up on Sunday morning, | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
the black spray paint was done on Monday morning, | 0:11:24 | 0:11:28
less than 24 hours later, | 0:11:28 | 0:11:30
and then a few hours later, the blue paint was done. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:35
I think what's quite frightening about this is, | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
speaking to a couple of folk in the village | 0:11:37 | 0:11:40
and they are of similar opinion to us, No Thanks, | 0:11:40 | 0:11:44
but they say they're scared to actually express their opinions, | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
which I think is a really, really sad indictment | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
to a civilised society - | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
that you can't have an open debate and agree to differ from each other | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
but still respect each other's views. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
It goes back to that thing, | 0:11:58 | 0:11:59
that you can't be passionately nationalistic | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
in terms of Scotland as a nation and Scotland as a country | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
and vote No Thanks. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:08
Shaun and his friend are voting for the first time, | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
but Shaun's mind has been changing like the weather. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
Now I'm more for it, I think. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
Over at the salon where Shaun works, owner Leo has popped in | 0:12:33 | 0:12:37
to give his take to the virgin voters. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:39
I'm voting No - being involved in the business sector, | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
there's too many questions needing to answered | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
and in the debates | 0:12:47 | 0:12:49
they seem to answering questions with questions | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
rather than giving the answers we want to find out. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:53
So you're voting Yes because your friends say their voting Yes? | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
But that's not you voting Yes - that's you following the leader. | 0:12:56 | 0:13:01
But if I can't listen to the parliament or the government | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
cos I don't understand what they say, | 0:13:04 | 0:13:05
I have to listen to friends and family and clients and you and everyone. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
But you listen to everyone, | 0:13:09 | 0:13:10
then after, you form your own opinion. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
But you've got to go with what you want for the economy, you know? | 0:13:12 | 0:13:17
I don't know what other people want. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
It is my opinion - I'm voting Yes | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
because I think what I've heard and what I've listened to | 0:13:22 | 0:13:25
and what I've seen in the news, the whole combination of it all... | 0:13:25 | 0:13:28
For Leo, voting is clearly a hot topic. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
I think some of the younger generation | 0:13:34 | 0:13:36
is not taking it seriously as they should be | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
because this is not just about voting because of a vote - | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
this is about voting because of the future of the economy | 0:13:42 | 0:13:44
and the future of my kids and other people's kids. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
-INTERVIEWER: -Thinking of anyone in particular? | 0:13:47 | 0:13:50
HE LAUGHS | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
I'm not thinking of anyone in particular | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
but Shaun comes to mind. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:56
HE LAUGHS | 0:13:56 | 0:13:58
He's confusing me! | 0:14:00 | 0:14:02
It's not a matter of confusing you. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
I think, in order to make a proper decision, | 0:14:04 | 0:14:07
you've got to look at it as a whole. | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10
Look at what is Mr Salmond is saying, | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
what the people at No are saying | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
and then form your own opinion. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:17
Despite Leo's little pep talk, Devon is still uncertain. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
But perhaps a change of scene might help her decide. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:29
I'll be on holiday just before it. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:32
I'm just back in time for the voting, | 0:14:32 | 0:14:34
so when I go there, I won't really be round people | 0:14:34 | 0:14:37
who are talking about it, | 0:14:37 | 0:14:38
so I could probably just make my own mind up when I'm away | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
and then come back with a clear head. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
That's it - so many have been saying to me, the past few weeks... | 0:14:44 | 0:14:46
-Over this side? -Over that way. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
More people have been saying to me, "No". | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
At first, all my friends have been saying, "Yes", | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
then the past couple of weeks, | 0:14:53 | 0:14:54
so many more people are saying, "No", now. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:56
That has been confusing me. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:57
But I think I'm going to stick to my guns. | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
A client was saying today as well, you'll probably have a gut feeling. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:04
And you'll end up just going with that, so... | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
Still waiting on that feeling! | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
SHE LAUGHS | 0:15:09 | 0:15:10
Last time we saw farmer Danny and his wife Alison, | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
they were run off their feet keeping the farm going. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
The truth is we haven't left the farm | 0:15:35 | 0:15:37
in the last wee while, | 0:15:37 | 0:15:38
so we probably haven't really had | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
the opportunity to... | 0:15:40 | 0:15:41
-Talk much about it. -Yeah. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:44
Today, the couple are showing off the farm to fellow farmers. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:57
So what's the view in the big barn? | 0:15:58 | 0:16:01
I think the majority of people that I have spoken to | 0:16:01 | 0:16:03
from the farming community | 0:16:03 | 0:16:05
are in favour of the Better Together campaign. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:08
I've spoken to a few who are Yes voters | 0:16:09 | 0:16:13
and I think...there is definitely an element of peer pressure. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
If most farmers have made up their minds, | 0:16:16 | 0:16:20
the Milnes certainly haven't. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
She's playing her cards pretty close to her chest | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
and I must admit I am too. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:27
You know, trying to double bluff her, maybe. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:29
I think our views are fairly similar. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
It doesn't matters to either of us if we vote differently. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:36
But I think, given we have the same moral values | 0:16:36 | 0:16:38
and the same beliefs about what the opportunities | 0:16:38 | 0:16:43
might look like for our children in the future, | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
I would be surprised if we voted differently. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
Will we vote both the same way? | 0:16:49 | 0:16:51
Yeah, I think we probably will. I think we probably will. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:56
It's homework time again | 0:17:00 | 0:17:01
and this time, it's round two of the leaders' debates. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
Will our voters enjoy this one any more? | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
Both our contributors will now have the opportunity | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
to cross-examine one other, | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
although they've been doing a fair bit of that so far. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
-Alistair Darling. -Right - I want to go back to currency. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
RIA GRUMBLES, IAN LAUGHS | 0:17:23 | 0:17:26
..at our last debate that you made a better fist at explaining | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
what your Plan B is. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:31
Off you go and tell me. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
Well, I've heard of one-trick ponies | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
but this must be the most extraordinary thing tonight. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:38
He gives three options, but which one will he go for? | 0:17:38 | 0:17:41
Yeah, which is Plan B? | 0:17:41 | 0:17:43
You'll end up stuck with all the debt - | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
debt, incidentally, which you and the current Chancellor | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
managed to accumulate 60%. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:50
I'm all right - I've got four jars of home-made jam in the fridge | 0:17:50 | 0:17:55
and a bag of flour, going to make wholemeal bread. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
Is that allowed in an independent Scotland? | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
-Em... -There's risk of losing the jam jars, too. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
Will you be prepared | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
to support the sovereign will of the Scottish people | 0:18:05 | 0:18:07
if the Yes side win the referendum? | 0:18:07 | 0:18:09
Oh, God - yes, so, "If we get independence, | 0:18:09 | 0:18:14
"are you still going to be Scottish? | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
"Are you still going to want the best for Scotland?" | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
"No, because I didn't get my way | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20
"and I'm going to throw all my toys out the pram - boo-hoo!" | 0:18:20 | 0:18:24
Is that what you want him to say, Alex? | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
THEY TALK OVER EACH OTHER | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
Are you backing out the Yes side? | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
-GLENN CAMPBELL: -Hang on - I want questions... | 0:18:30 | 0:18:32
They don't give straight answers. They always say something... | 0:18:32 | 0:18:35
That's what politicians do. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:36
That is the policy we put forward. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
THEY TALK OVER EACH OTHER | 0:18:38 | 0:18:40
Somebody should switch they microphones off. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
See when they start talking over each other, | 0:18:47 | 0:18:49
I cannae tune in! | 0:18:49 | 0:18:51
You didn't step in at all! | 0:18:51 | 0:18:52
Shh! Be quiet. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
Why you're so strong on it, I can understand that. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:57
I don't know what they're saying | 0:18:57 | 0:18:58
cos you keep rabbling on about the same points over and over. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
I'm trying to get my points across to you. | 0:19:01 | 0:19:03
-Ooh... -Don't you interrupt them as well. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:04
enough people interrupting them. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:06
The time is up. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:07
-Thank God for that. -Alistair, stop going on about the money. | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
We get the point. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:12
Thank God. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:14
-You're not even listening. -I missed that bit. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:16
LAUGHTER | 0:19:16 | 0:19:18
Once upon a time, Jessica and Mark were in unison. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
He's voting No as well. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
But then she began having second thoughts. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:33
Can you positively tell me that you know that we're going to survive? | 0:19:33 | 0:19:37
No. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:38 | |
Boom, point proven. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:40
After a long hard think, Jessica decided to switch to Yes. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:47
-Are you totally, totally Yes? -Mm-hm, totally. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:49
But has she told fiance Mark about her change of heart? | 0:19:55 | 0:20:00
I've changed my mind. I was so adamant that I was No | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
but I've done my research | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
and saw the right side, I've changed my mind. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:09
Ach, she'd made her own decision so... | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
But I still think you're daft though. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:16
Why'd you think I'm daft, though? | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
-You know why. -Why? | 0:20:18 | 0:20:19
We'll not benefit in any way from it. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:21
-I've changed my mind... -He was asked specifically, | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
-if things don't go to plan... -..cos I've read all the information. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:26
If things don't go the way you've planned them, what is your plan B? | 0:20:26 | 0:20:29
-Just avoided it. -I've watched the referendum debates | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
-and I think it's the best decision for Scotland. -Alex Salmond knows... | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
The referendum may have brought old friends together | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
but it may be spoiling this couple's happily ever after. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
-I'm not talking nonsense. -You are talking nonsense. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:44
-I'm making sense. -Daddy is talking nonsense. | 0:20:44 | 0:20:46
You say, "Be quiet, Dad, you're a midden." You tell him. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
You tell him. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:50
-"You're a midden, Dad." -M-m-m-m. -Team Salmond. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:54
Midden or not, rest assured, | 0:20:54 | 0:20:56
Jessica's Mum doesn't need to take her hat back - | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
the wedding's still on.. | 0:20:59 | 0:21:01
Fields that were once full of barley are now stubble and bales. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:19
The vote is nearly here and Alison has made up her mind. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:26
I think, for me, | 0:21:27 | 0:21:29
I'm not willing to take a risk, | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
but I'm going to view it as rising to a challenge. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:36
And I've decided that it's not about following a pipe dream, | 0:21:36 | 0:21:41
it's about being ambitious | 0:21:41 | 0:21:43
and for that reason, I have decided that I am going to vote Yes. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:49
DANNY INHALES SHARPLY | 0:21:49 | 0:21:50
I believe in something better for Scotland. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:53
I'm kind of torn between the two. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:55
One minute, I'm Yes, one minute, I'm No. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
I suppose I'm a typical farmer sitting on the fence. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:02
THEY CHUCKLE | 0:22:02 | 0:22:04
Danny's still waiting for his gut to tell him what to do, | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
but it's looking like the couple might be taking different roads. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:13
I think Scotland itself will cope quite comfortably, | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
it's just whether or not, as a nation together, | 0:22:16 | 0:22:22
we should just stick together. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
When these eggs got thrown at Jim Murphy, | 0:22:25 | 0:22:28
that kind of put my back up a wee bit. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:32
I was a bit disappointed that people would be doing such a thing. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:35
I want everyone to get on together as a nation which we do just now. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:39
I suppose whichever way you decide to go, | 0:22:39 | 0:22:43
I can say with some level of confidence that I'm likely to | 0:22:43 | 0:22:47
be more passionate about the direction in which we go. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:52
I'm certainly passionate about it, | 0:22:52 | 0:22:53
I'm maybe just not such a high-risk taker as you potentially are | 0:22:53 | 0:22:56
because there is an element of risk, there's no question about it. | 0:22:56 | 0:23:00
Even though Alison has made her decision, Danny will wait | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
and see what his gut ultimately tells him on the day. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:09
This is my old pal, Frank. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
Frank and Stewart have been chums for ever. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:23
They also run a business together. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
But their views on the referendum have been oceans apart. | 0:23:25 | 0:23:29
I never have tried to persuade Stewart and I never will. | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
If he wants to listen to what I'm saying, it's fine. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:38
I still have, in the back of my mind, that we're stronger together. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:42
I'll just never listen to what he says. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
It's mid-summer in Shetland, | 0:23:51 | 0:23:52
which means it never gets dark. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
Today, Frank is on dry land enjoying a barbecue. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
CROWD SING FOLK SONG | 0:23:58 | 0:24:02
The nearest train station to here is in Bergen, Norway. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:10
Shetland and Orkney was given as a dowry to the Danish. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:19
That marriage was never completed, | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
so therefore a lot of people in Shetland | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
still think that it's... | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
we're still a part of Scandinavia. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:29
Can Frank convince Stewart, a determined No, | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
that Shetland is safe in an independent Scotland? | 0:24:40 | 0:24:44
I've always been in favour of independence for Scotland. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:48
So I knew exactly then what I know now, | 0:24:50 | 0:24:55
how I was going to vote so... | 0:24:55 | 0:24:58
But you're different. | 0:24:58 | 0:24:59
Well, yeah, because I'm not Scottish, Frank, I'm Shetland. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:06
It's part of Scotland, Shetland. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:08
It is, I ken that. | 0:25:08 | 0:25:11
Now, the way it's going for me now, | 0:25:11 | 0:25:15
I've been doing an awful lot of hard thinking about this, | 0:25:15 | 0:25:20
and...I ken nobody else from my house | 0:25:20 | 0:25:24
will agree with what I'm going to say, | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
but I'm going to vote for it. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
I've spoken with you, this wee boy that's always given me good advice, | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
that's been one of my best pals all my life. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:39
And I'm voting for it. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
Over a summer, a baby can grow into a wee boy. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:57
People who don't even read the paper can end up excited about politics. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:04
We've followed a small sample of voters | 0:26:04 | 0:26:07
and their decisions don't tell us what Scotland will do. | 0:26:07 | 0:26:10
But maybe their experiences tell us something about this special summer. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:15
We've never voted before, | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
I'd never watched anything to do with politics, | 0:26:17 | 0:26:19
hardly ever read the newspaper or nothing and I think it has. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:22
It's been dead interesting | 0:26:22 | 0:26:24
hearing different people's points of view and stuff. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:26
I'm the same as you. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:27
I've never ever thought about it before | 0:26:27 | 0:26:29
and this is the first time I've been on the roll | 0:26:29 | 0:26:31
and it is interesting | 0:26:31 | 0:26:33
and maybe it'll make us, in the future, | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
vote more and take more of an interest. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:39
-Before, it was like we're not really interested at all. -I was not. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:42
You've got some folk saying I've heard enough, I want it over with. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:45
-Really?! -Yeah, but I still cannae get enough. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
No, you cannae. What you going to do after this? | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
What you going to tweet about? | 0:26:50 | 0:26:52
Well, the next exciting bit is the fallout from it, | 0:26:52 | 0:26:54
the negotiations, what the settlement's actually going to be. | 0:26:54 | 0:26:59
Whether it's Yes people villainising No | 0:26:59 | 0:27:02
or whether it's No people villanising Yes, | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
I think its bang out of order. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:06
We're in a free country with freedom of speech | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
and we should all be allowed to express our opinions | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
without the fear of retribution. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:12
-It's interesting, the level of passion it has, actually. -Yeah. | 0:27:12 | 0:27:17
And the fact that it's going to be as close as it's going to be, | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
it'll be interesting to see what happens after the vote | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
cos there's going to be an awful lot of disappointed people, whichever way it goes. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:26
We're old hippies with the boat and we love that but... | 0:27:31 | 0:27:35
I have never been a hippie! Where you get this hippie from?! | 0:27:35 | 0:27:40
I'm a hippie. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:41
I don't want to be called a hippie! | 0:27:41 | 0:27:43
-You is a hippie. -I'm no a hippie. | 0:27:43 | 0:27:45
Look at the jumpers you wear. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:48
I'm no wearing a jumper. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:49
When you does. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:51
HE LAUGHS | 0:27:51 | 0:27:52
-Maybe we need to get into it more. -I know, definitely. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:58
Never going to say I'm going to join the group or whatever. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:00
-Debating club. -I know, totally. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:02
-I'd never say that but... -THEY LAUGH | 0:28:02 | 0:28:04
Whoo. High-five. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:06
THEY LAUGH | 0:28:08 | 0:28:10
I hope everybody in Scotland is going to be the same. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:17
It wouldn't matter how you vote, everybody just... | 0:28:17 | 0:28:21
You have to think of the bigger picture. | 0:28:23 | 0:28:27
THEY LAUGH | 0:28:27 | 0:28:29 |
