Growing numbers of white British women are converting to Islam.

0:00:030:00:06

But why would they want to give up all the freedoms their Western life allows?

0:00:080:00:13

If you're one of these people that enjoy going out clubbing and getting completely rat-arsed, you know,

0:00:130:00:18

like, laying in the curb at four o'clock in the morning, with sick on your face and stuff,

0:00:180:00:22

then maybe Islam isn't for you, even though you might need it!

0:00:220:00:26

How easy is it for converts to adapt to a faith where men can

0:00:260:00:30

marry up to four wives?

0:00:300:00:32

All my friends know that I'm a co-wife,

0:00:320:00:35

I've never kept that a secret from anyone.

0:00:350:00:38

But why are they embracing a faith that some people associate

0:00:380:00:41

with religious extremism?

0:00:410:00:43

The way I see it is, I'm not a terrorist,

0:00:430:00:45

and I know that my fiance, the way he is, he's not a terrorist.

0:00:450:00:49

Unlike the converts, Shanna Bukhari was born and brought up a Muslim.

0:00:490:00:53

I believe in my religion - being modern doesn't mean

0:00:530:00:57

I don't believe in God.

0:00:570:00:59

But she doesn't regularly practise her Muslim faith. She loves

0:00:590:01:02

all the freedoms her Western life allows - in fact, she's a model.

0:01:020:01:08

In total contrast, she'll be meeting converts who try to follow

0:01:090:01:13

Islamic guidelines in everything they do.

0:01:130:01:16

I want to know why women are converting to Islam,

0:01:160:01:19

so I'm going to go and meet five converts and try

0:01:190:01:21

understanding why they've converted to a new religion.

0:01:210:01:25

She'll find out how Islam's changed their lives,

0:01:250:01:28

and what unexpected difficulties they've had to face.

0:01:280:01:31

I don't know how converts get married, I really don't.

0:01:310:01:34

But what might the converts teach Shanna about her own faith?

0:01:350:01:39

I look Muslim.

0:01:390:01:40

Shanna's a 26-year-old Muslim from Manchester, and she's a top model.

0:01:480:01:53

I just love the whole...looking so elegant, glamorous, pretty,

0:01:530:01:58

dolled-up.

0:01:580:01:59

At the age of fifteen I just knew I wanted to get into modelling.

0:02:010:02:05

Shanna comes from a large British Pakistani family.

0:02:050:02:09

I was the only one out of all the daughters who loved

0:02:090:02:13

dressing up, who would change, like, three to four times a day,

0:02:130:02:16

who would want to wear Mummy's lipstick when Mummy's out. I used

0:02:160:02:20

to love wearing dresses every day and being dressed up all the time.

0:02:200:02:24

I get excited just saying "shopping" cos I love it so much.

0:02:280:02:31

Shoes, handbags, gorgeous outfits - I'm happy.

0:02:310:02:36

Shanna wants to know why so many girls her age would turn

0:02:380:02:41

their back on what most people think are the best bits of being young.

0:02:410:02:45

You're a young British female and you can wear what you want,

0:02:450:02:49

you can have a crazy night out and come home

0:02:490:02:51

at five in the morning with a hangover and you can do all these

0:02:510:02:57

things, and it's like, OK, why are you choosing to leave all this

0:02:570:03:01

fun and excitement and come into a total new faith that says,

0:03:010:03:06

"you can't drink this alcohol, you've got to start dressing differently,"

0:03:060:03:11

so what is it that makes you choose

0:03:110:03:14

and leave all that behind and come to something so new?

0:03:140:03:17

A recent YouGov survey found that 69% of respondents think

0:03:180:03:23

Islam encourages the repression of women

0:03:230:03:25

and 50% associate Islam with terrorism.

0:03:250:03:29

What puzzles me is someone who's new to the faith and religion,

0:03:290:03:33

don't they automatically think extremism, terrorism?

0:03:330:03:36

Does it not put them off and think, "What is Islam?"

0:03:360:03:41

Despite all that, it's estimated that last year around five thousand

0:03:410:03:44

people converted to Islam in the UK.

0:03:440:03:47

Over half were white, and three-quarters of them were women.

0:03:470:03:51

Shanna's setting out on her journey. She's travelling to Wales

0:03:560:04:00

to meet her first convert, who's a brand-new Muslim.

0:04:000:04:04

In a small community near Bridgend,

0:04:050:04:07

Claire's the only white Muslim girl in the village.

0:04:070:04:11

Like many converts, she's taken a new Islamic name,

0:04:110:04:14

and now she likes to be known as Safir.

0:04:140:04:18

I'm going to wear mine like this today cos that's the way I like it.

0:04:180:04:21

She's 24, and lives with her mum and dad - Jill and Bryan.

0:04:210:04:27

She was brought up a Christian

0:04:270:04:29

and she graduated from college this year.

0:04:290:04:32

Partying didn't have the same appeal for Safir that it does to

0:04:320:04:34

most girls in their twenties - Islam offered her something different.

0:04:340:04:39

I'm quite a conservative person.

0:04:390:04:41

In Britain, everybody's very loose, you know -

0:04:410:04:43

you can go out and get drunk.

0:04:430:04:45

I've never been like that and this is why Islam was so appealing

0:04:450:04:49

to me, because it was a religion where it was quite conservative.

0:04:490:04:54

And obviously nothing like that really exists in Britain any more.

0:04:540:04:58

While most girls in Britain wear what they want, practising

0:04:580:05:01

Muslim women often wear hijab - a head scarf and long loose clothing.

0:05:010:05:07

So what if you have to wear a long dress and, you know,

0:05:070:05:10

cover yourself modestly?

0:05:100:05:11

It's good dressing, you know, why would you want to have

0:05:110:05:15

everything out? D'you know what I mean - what's the point?

0:05:150:05:19

Who are you trying to prove to?

0:05:190:05:22

If you are really OK with yourself, who cares what you wear?

0:05:220:05:25

I'm a very fashionable person, but I'll do it with my own style.

0:05:250:05:30

Things won't be out, my legs won't be out, my bum won't be out -

0:05:300:05:33

do you get what I mean? But I'll still look really nice.

0:05:330:05:35

There's a way of dressing that looks nice - and modestly.

0:05:350:05:39

Some people might think these rules are repressive,

0:05:410:05:44

but Safir doesn't think so.

0:05:440:05:45

All this stuff about women being oppressed

0:05:460:05:49

and stuff is complete codswallop. It is! Most of the girls I know...

0:05:490:05:54

Well, pretty much all the girls I know - the Muslims -

0:05:540:05:58

they're spoilt rotten. If we want to work, we can work if we want.

0:05:580:06:02

If we don't want to, our husband will provide for us, you know.

0:06:020:06:06

And it says in the Qur'an

0:06:060:06:07

that a women can chase knowledge if she wishes.

0:06:070:06:10

Safir's come to the station to meet Shanna.

0:06:130:06:16

She only became a Muslim a few weeks ago,

0:06:160:06:18

so she has lots to tell about what it's like to be a convert.

0:06:180:06:22

It's a big day for her as she has an important meeting

0:06:220:06:24

at the mosque in Cardiff.

0:06:240:06:26

-Hello.

-Hi, Shanna!

0:06:260:06:29

-I love this.

-Thank you.

0:06:290:06:31

-Have you been Muslim all your life?

-Yeah.

0:06:310:06:34

OK. That's a stupid question, really!

0:06:340:06:37

So where are we going today?

0:06:370:06:39

Basically we're going to catch the train into Cardiff

0:06:390:06:42

and I'm going to take you to my local mosque.

0:06:420:06:43

Why are we going to the mosque?

0:06:430:06:45

Basically, when I converted they were going to give me

0:06:450:06:48

-a certificate of authenticity that I'm a Muslim!

-Wow!

0:06:480:06:51

Tickets, please.

0:06:510:06:52

Muslims believe that when you convert to Islam, all the sins

0:06:520:06:56

you've committed in your past are wiped out.

0:06:560:06:59

-When did you convert?

-It was like a couple of weeks ago, you know.

0:06:590:07:02

It was like, everybody gets really excited,

0:07:020:07:04

cos I'm like a new-born Muslim and everybody's like, "Oh, will you pray

0:07:040:07:08

"for me, will you pray for me?" you know, because apparently, you know

0:07:080:07:11

my prayers are a bit more powerful because they consider me as pure.

0:07:110:07:15

How long have you been wearing the headscarf?

0:07:150:07:18

I kind of experimented with it, I've got to be honest, I kind of put

0:07:180:07:21

a scarf on my hair and wondered like, can I do this, you know.

0:07:210:07:24

But there are Muslims out there that don't even wear hijabs,

0:07:240:07:27

-you know, like you.

-Yeah! (LAUGHS) You know what I mean, it's like, you don't have to wear it.

0:07:270:07:31

Do you find, though, it helps you, like?

0:07:310:07:33

To be honest, they do look at you more, especially the men,

0:07:330:07:37

especially the men. It's ridiculous.

0:07:370:07:39

I mean, men come on to me just because I'm wearing a hijab.

0:07:390:07:42

Do you feel restricted in any way?

0:07:420:07:44

Where I live, everything is so constrictive.

0:07:440:07:47

Cos I'm white as well, people think that I'm a traitor

0:07:470:07:51

and stuff which I'm not.

0:07:510:07:54

Converting to Islam is relatively straightforward.

0:07:560:07:59

You need to recite a statement saying that Allah is the only God

0:07:590:08:02

and Muhammad is his prophet.

0:08:020:08:05

It's said in front of witnesses, and it's known as a shahada.

0:08:050:08:09

This is the centre where I did my shahada,

0:08:090:08:13

so basically now we're going to go in,

0:08:130:08:15

hopefully get my certificate that they've hopefully done for me.

0:08:150:08:19

-Come in.

-Hi.

-Hello, Claire.

-Hi, Uncle. How are you?

0:08:190:08:22

Fine, thank you. Come in.

0:08:220:08:23

Thank you.

0:08:230:08:25

The certificate. Let's read it together.

0:08:250:08:28

It says...

0:08:280:08:29

It's an Islamic testimony certificate.

0:08:310:08:33

19th of September, 2012.

0:08:330:08:36

"To whom it may concern - Claire Louise Evans, aka Safir,

0:08:360:08:39

"this is to certify that Miss Claire Louise Evans, Safir,

0:08:420:08:44

"has been embraced and accepted Islam as a religion on August, 2012."

0:08:440:08:51

-Congratulations.

-Thank you very much. It's very nice.

0:08:510:08:54

Accepting Allah has changed Safir's outlook on life.

0:08:560:08:59

I noticed a couple of weeks ago,

0:08:590:09:01

I went out and I felt like my eyes were open, do you get what I mean?

0:09:010:09:07

It's like I saw everything again, you know? It was so weird, you know,

0:09:070:09:11

I just find that Allah has just showered me in blessings and stuff.

0:09:110:09:15

Hey, how did it go?

0:09:150:09:16

Hi. Here it is.

0:09:160:09:17

Wow! So you have your certificate now.

0:09:170:09:20

Yes, I'm definitely Muslim, but it's all in here, really.

0:09:200:09:26

Being accepted as a Muslim is nerve-racking for converts

0:09:270:09:32

and the mosque is Safir's first hurdle.

0:09:320:09:34

Eva, this is Claire. Claire, this is Eva. She's new to Islam.

0:09:340:09:38

She converted about a month ago.

0:09:380:09:40

The good news is, she's made welcome by the local Muslim community

0:09:400:09:45

up in the women's prayer hall.

0:09:450:09:47

How are you feeling?

0:09:470:09:49

Ah! Like - new, you know?

0:09:490:09:52

-Happy?

-Happy, very happy.

-Comfortable?

0:09:520:09:54

Yes.

0:09:540:09:55

This is like a small gift from me and my family.

0:09:550:09:58

-You didn't have to.

-It's prayer clothes for when you pray.

0:09:580:10:00

-It'll be so much easier for you at home, and a prayer mat.

-Oh, my gosh!

0:10:000:10:04

-So instead of you...

-I'm going to cry now!

0:10:040:10:08

..always having to put stuff on...

0:10:080:10:11

I'm going to cry. Thank you so much, thank you. That's so nice.

0:10:110:10:16

It's so nice to have you here, seriously. Don't lose your passion and motivation.

0:10:160:10:21

Oh, it's so sweet of you. Thank you so much.

0:10:210:10:25

DEVOTIONAL SINGING

0:10:250:10:26

It's time for evening prayer.

0:10:300:10:33

Under Islam, men and women always pray separately,

0:10:330:10:36

to protect women's modesty.

0:10:360:10:38

It's early days for Safir, and praying is new to her.

0:10:380:10:41

Obviously Islam is about Allah - and we all pray to Allah together.

0:10:430:10:48

The feeling you get when you pray, it's much different when you just put your hands together.

0:10:480:10:53

Something washes over you.

0:10:530:10:55

It's like the deepest meditation that you can think of.

0:10:550:10:58

It's the first time Shanna's been in a mosque since she was a child.

0:10:580:11:02

Seeing Safir and the girls pray together has had an unexpected impact.

0:11:020:11:07

Today's been a bit of an experience.

0:11:070:11:10

I felt a bit emotional watching someone who has just newly

0:11:100:11:14

come into a faith that I have been born into, and how she's putting

0:11:140:11:19

all this effort and how I have been neglecting what I should be doing.

0:11:190:11:26

It just got me thinking.

0:11:260:11:29

What makes it more emotional and sad for me is that I know how to pray.

0:11:290:11:33

So I'm sat in a mosque and I'm watching people read

0:11:340:11:38

and I'm saying inside myself, "I know how to do this

0:11:380:11:43

"and I bet you guys think I don't when you look at me."

0:11:430:11:47

I'm a bad girl, aren't I?

0:11:470:11:49

Crap!

0:11:510:11:52

If you're a practising Muslim you're supposed to pray five times a day.

0:11:540:11:59

And wherever you are, you have to pray in the direction of the Muslim holy city, Mecca.

0:11:590:12:05

The first prayer's at the crack of dawn - but Safir's still learning.

0:12:050:12:09

I notice morning prayer is like four until five.

0:12:090:12:15

I've got to be honest, I don't know who gets up at 4.24 in the morning, do you get what I mean?

0:12:150:12:19

You know, you've got to be really dedicated to do that

0:12:190:12:23

cos although I love to pray, I love my sleep as well,

0:12:230:12:25

so I kind of always miss this but I always make up for it later.

0:12:250:12:30

I don't know if you're supposed to do that. I'm probably a really naughty Muslim.

0:12:300:12:34

I still haven't opened this.

0:12:340:12:36

I was kind of afraid to open it in case it got dirty.

0:12:360:12:39

It shows you which way to pray and stuff.

0:12:390:12:43

It's really ironic - it's supposed to be for Islams, and yet it says "made in China". (LAUGHS)

0:12:430:12:48

That's really strange.

0:12:480:12:50

I also have my book, and like, it's a bit childish,

0:12:500:12:56

but it's my book on how to do prayers and stuff.

0:12:560:13:00

So, it's got, like, what you're supposed to say

0:13:000:13:03

and all that sort of stuff in it, you know.

0:13:030:13:06

So whenever I start praying I always have that in front of me

0:13:060:13:09

and I do it really slowly because I can't do it really fast

0:13:090:13:13

because like obviously I'm new, and I want to do it properly.

0:13:130:13:16

One of the toughest hurdles converts have to face is

0:13:190:13:23

the reaction of their families.

0:13:230:13:26

Shanna's come to meet Safir's mum Jill to see what

0:13:260:13:29

she thought about her daughter's decision.

0:13:290:13:32

Hello!

0:13:320:13:34

How are other members of the family with Safir's

0:13:340:13:37

change of religion now?

0:13:370:13:39

They're not very happy.

0:13:390:13:41

They...they're just not very happy about it.

0:13:410:13:44

Do you think they'll ever get used to the idea?

0:13:440:13:47

It's very hard but I think they are pretty accepting, my family.

0:13:470:13:51

I like to think that they are, and they will come round in time.

0:13:510:13:55

What do you think about Islam?

0:13:550:13:57

I started reading things and I read the Qur'an.

0:13:570:14:00

And I just found lots of it like the Bible.

0:14:000:14:04

You know, which I've read things in the Bible

0:14:040:14:07

and I really don't see it's such a bad religion.

0:14:070:14:10

And things that she's told me,

0:14:100:14:12

that the parents have more say in things.

0:14:120:14:15

I see a lot of things - the way my mother used to say things,

0:14:170:14:23

about courting, and that I had to fetch the boy home and wait.

0:14:230:14:27

The Muslim religion is more of the old-fashioned Christian way.

0:14:270:14:30

Safir's dad Bryan has lived in the Welsh valleys all his life.

0:14:340:14:38

For him, Islam feels like a very foreign religion.

0:14:380:14:42

I can't say I'm really up for it, like.

0:14:420:14:45

It's a different culture, innit?

0:14:450:14:48

But she seems to be happy with it, so, you know...

0:14:480:14:50

She's 24 years of age now, she has her own mind to make up now.

0:14:520:14:57

But I did tell her, you know, she is Welsh, you know what I mean.

0:14:570:15:01

No need to wear the clothes because you know,

0:15:010:15:04

she got her own clothes there.

0:15:040:15:06

At the end of the day, she's got pretty hair, curly,

0:15:060:15:10

like her old man!

0:15:100:15:11

So there's no need to hide it, is there?

0:15:130:15:15

If I did say something, she probably wouldn't talk to me again!

0:15:170:15:21

So at the end of the day, she's got to find out for herself, hasn't she?

0:15:210:15:25

But she knows I'm only at the other end of the phone

0:15:270:15:32

If she ever needs me.

0:15:320:15:33

That's all she's got to do is pick the phone up.

0:15:330:15:35

I feel sorry for her dad going to that pub

0:15:370:15:40

and his friends sitting there with their pint of lager or whatever.

0:15:400:15:43

They'd be like "How's your daughter doing?

0:15:430:15:45

"She still got that thing on her head?"

0:15:450:15:47

They could be making a joke out of it and how is he to reply

0:15:470:15:50

and respond to it?

0:15:500:15:51

He would really thoroughly need to understand his daughter before

0:15:530:15:57

he understands the religion and that just does not happen overnight.

0:15:570:16:01

Next, Shanna's travelling up to Scotland.

0:16:060:16:09

She wants to meet a convert who's been practising Islam for a while.

0:16:090:16:13

Alana converted over two years ago. She's 20 and lives in Glasgow.

0:16:130:16:19

She's a media student,

0:16:190:16:21

but what's most important in her life is her faith - Islam.

0:16:210:16:25

I'm a traveller so I'm from the fairground, and you get Scottish and English travellers.

0:16:250:16:30

We're not gypsies, it's a completely different thing,

0:16:300:16:33

and I grew up on a caravan site.

0:16:330:16:35

This is my home. And that's my wee caravan, my wee cara-hut.

0:16:420:16:46

And I live right across from my mum and dad,

0:16:490:16:52

so if I don't feel like cooking, she feeds me.

0:16:520:16:54

Alana was brought up a Protestant and was baptised as a baby.

0:16:570:17:03

But her conversion to Islam hasn't always been easy.

0:17:030:17:07

It was really hard for me, because especially living in the east end

0:17:070:17:10

of Glasgow, and there's no Muslims here

0:17:100:17:12

and there's such... I'm white, Scottish...

0:17:120:17:14

there's hard... you know, "Why, how odd,

0:17:140:17:17

"why would you choose to be a Muslim?"

0:17:170:17:20

And I feel as if I need to be extra polite,

0:17:200:17:22

for them to know that I'm human, you know, that I'm Scottish,

0:17:220:17:26

cos I feel like they think I'm going to do something to them.

0:17:260:17:29

They've got that look.

0:17:290:17:30

Shanna's come to meet Alana to find out

0:17:300:17:32

if it was hard to leave her old life behind.

0:17:320:17:35

Were you into all that stuff - partying, clubbing...?

0:17:360:17:39

Well, I did go out quite a lot when I was younger.

0:17:390:17:43

Did you used to drink?

0:17:430:17:45

Uh-uh, yeah. I used to drink and go out

0:17:450:17:47

and then I would go out and not drink

0:17:470:17:49

and still go out to the clubs

0:17:490:17:51

and now it's not going out to the clubs and not drinking at all.

0:17:510:17:54

It's more been a change for my friends, adapting,

0:17:540:17:56

-thinking "Why is she not coming out?"

-What were they like?

0:17:560:18:00

The first, the typical thing they'd say is "You don't have to drink

0:18:000:18:03

"but still come out," you know.

0:18:030:18:04

"You can be the taxi driver," you know, which was fine.

0:18:040:18:08

And then the more, I was like, "No, this is defeating the purpose."

0:18:080:18:12

What has been the biggest thing you've had to give up?

0:18:120:18:14

I love Parma ham, I love it - the salt, and wrap it around melon,

0:18:140:18:18

it's just beautiful.

0:18:180:18:19

-So, that was the hardest thing?

-Yeah, I think, you know,

0:18:190:18:22

I'm known for walking out of Tesco with just a packet of Parma ham

0:18:220:18:26

and just eating it, and I think that has been the hardest thing.

0:18:260:18:30

That's what my cousin says, "How will you give up Parma ham?" and I'm like, "Yeah, I know!"

0:18:300:18:35

But it's by chance that Alana encountered Islam.

0:18:350:18:38

When she first left college two and a half years ago

0:18:380:18:41

she set out for Lanzarote hoping to become a club rep.

0:18:410:18:45

When you're 18, it's the whole "you need to go out and live your life while you're young

0:18:450:18:49

"and do all the things you're going to regret."

0:18:490:18:52

And I was like, I want to go out and do everything I'm going to regret,

0:18:520:18:54

have a crazy six month, just get absolutely mental drunk,

0:18:540:18:58

just go out do what I want to do and have a brilliant time

0:18:580:19:01

and come back and then work. And that just didn't happen.

0:19:010:19:04

What did happen is she met her fiance Abdul -

0:19:070:19:11

he introduced her to Islam - and now they're planning to get married.

0:19:110:19:15

I would have to have an Islamic wedding and a British wedding.

0:19:150:19:19

But I think I would try to make it a bit more like a British wedding, for my dad.

0:19:190:19:23

I'm my dad's one-and-only, so I think I would have the white and the bridesmaids

0:19:230:19:27

just out of respect, that this is their only chance for me to do that.

0:19:270:19:31

So I wouldn't like to make it, you know, look too foreign.

0:19:310:19:36

Would you let the guests get drunk in your wedding?

0:19:360:19:39

No, I think...no, what I mean is, it is people's own choice to drink

0:19:390:19:43

but I think if they're coming to my wedding

0:19:430:19:45

and know I'm a Muslim and that my fiance is a Muslim,

0:19:450:19:47

they should have respect.

0:19:470:19:48

I would write, "If you're not happy about that, don't come."

0:19:480:19:51

And if they love me enough and love my family

0:19:510:19:53

then they should for that one day,

0:19:530:19:54

I'm sure they could manage to not drink for the one night.

0:19:540:19:59

But for Alana the importance of Islam goes far beyond falling

0:20:000:20:04

in love - it answers some of her big questions about life.

0:20:040:20:08

I've always believed in God, well, there being something.

0:20:080:20:13

It doesn't matter what you believe, I think we all deep down,

0:20:130:20:17

you must think, "When I die, I hope I go to a better place."

0:20:170:20:20

You must - you can't be human and not think, "When I die that's it, I don't care."

0:20:200:20:24

Everyone must think, "I want to go somewhere,

0:20:240:20:26

"where my relatives have died," or what.

0:20:260:20:28

You must have that sort of feeling.

0:20:280:20:30

Especially because I never got to meet my Granny and Grandad,

0:20:300:20:33

I always think, well, what happens if they're actually in heaven

0:20:330:20:37

and if I don't get to go there, that would just be terrible.

0:20:370:20:40

But it still required courage for Alana to break the news to

0:20:400:20:43

her family about her conversion.

0:20:430:20:46

Just before Ramadan was when I told my family that I was a Muslim.

0:20:460:20:50

I'd been a Muslim for a while, but I didn't tell them.

0:20:500:20:53

I was freaking out.

0:20:530:20:54

But I thought if I'm going to do Ramadan

0:20:540:20:57

they're going to know I'm not eating, so I had to tell them.

0:20:570:21:00

I finished work and I thought "Right, I'm going to do it."

0:21:000:21:05

So I went in and all of a sudden the adrenaline hit me,

0:21:050:21:07

I started panicking and shaking.

0:21:070:21:09

And I went in, my mom and dad they could tell, they know what I'm like.

0:21:090:21:12

I went, "I've got something to tell you," and I just burst out crying.

0:21:120:21:16

Then my dad started to get annoyed,

0:21:160:21:17

cos he's wanting to watch his programme,

0:21:170:21:19

so he's like "Hurry up, tell us, lass".

0:21:190:21:22

Then my mom's worried. She went, "You're pregnant?"

0:21:220:21:24

My dad's like, "You've crashed your car?"

0:21:240:21:26

And I burst out laughing then, cos then I was like, that's

0:21:260:21:29

the worst thing that they could have thought was going to happen to me.

0:21:290:21:32

And then I was like... "I actually want to be Muslim."

0:21:320:21:35

And my dad talked straight with, "I thought you already was a Muslim."

0:21:350:21:38

And I burst out laughing even more,

0:21:380:21:40

cos I thought well I'm making such a big deal out

0:21:400:21:42

of something that is obviously they, you know, already knew, you know.

0:21:420:21:47

Actually it felt like I was telling them I was gay

0:21:470:21:50

or something like that or I was pregnant, that's what it felt like.

0:21:500:21:54

Alana's determined to learn everything

0:21:540:21:56

she can about her faith. She devotes her free time to studying

0:21:560:22:00

and going to evening classes.

0:22:000:22:02

Tonight Shanna's come to join her

0:22:030:22:05

at her weekly Islamic Studies course.

0:22:050:22:08

Even after I became Muslim, I've studied a lot of books

0:22:080:22:12

and I've read them all back to front, and I've got that many,

0:22:120:22:16

I just felt, I know the basics,

0:22:160:22:17

or I THINK I know the basics and I thought, "I need something else".

0:22:170:22:21

So I was told about iSyllabus and I applied for a scholarship

0:22:210:22:24

and I got accepted. Now, what I would like is to do this course

0:22:240:22:28

and then I would like to study Arabic.

0:22:280:22:31

-Oh, wow.

-Because my fiance, he's Arabic,

0:22:310:22:34

he speaks Arabic and if we have any children, insha'Allah,

0:22:340:22:37

then I'd like to be speaking Arabic so I'm not getting talked about,

0:22:370:22:40

they're talking Arabic and I don't know what they're saying.

0:22:400:22:43

I would like that, and I would like to be able to read

0:22:430:22:45

the Qur'an in Arabic, rather than just in English.

0:22:450:22:47

I wouldn't feel as if I'm a proper Muslim in the future

0:22:470:22:50

if I didn't speak some level of Arabic.

0:22:500:22:52

It's really nice to see people

0:22:560:22:58

actually go out of their way to learn.

0:22:580:23:01

At the class the women sit behind the men, and following Islamic

0:23:010:23:04

guidelines on modesty, they cover up, wearing hijab.

0:23:040:23:09

But the lecture's been held up - and Shanna soon finds out why.

0:23:090:23:13

A course official's taken Alana to one side.

0:23:140:23:17

To attend the lecture, Shanna needs to wear a headscarf.

0:23:170:23:21

I'm having to wear a scarf

0:23:210:23:23

because I didn't use my brains before I came here.

0:23:230:23:27

Go on, I'll let you do it.

0:23:270:23:28

Oh, crap - I'm laughing!

0:23:320:23:33

This is really bad.

0:23:330:23:34

Wow, I look so weird.

0:23:400:23:41

I feel so self-conscious about it, do you know what I mean?

0:23:430:23:46

-D'you know what I mean?

-It's cos you're not used to it.

0:23:460:23:50

Do you know what it is? It's easier for women to wear less clothes

0:23:500:23:53

than it is for them to put more on.

0:23:530:23:55

It's also that thing...

0:23:550:23:57

It's an intense course and there's lots to learn.

0:23:570:24:00

Alana studies everything from Qur'anic history to sharia law.

0:24:000:24:04

Taqwa.

0:24:040:24:06

It's a term which many people know about. We hear it all the time.

0:24:060:24:11

The class is run by a charity who use a room at Glasgow University.

0:24:110:24:16

So, acting in obedience to God through a guiding light of God

0:24:160:24:19

with the intention of seeking his pleasure.

0:24:190:24:22

Shanna's shocked at the division between the sexes,

0:24:230:24:26

and the different expectations for men and women.

0:24:260:24:29

Automatically when you go into a lecture hall, even though it was

0:24:290:24:32

Islamic, I didn't think you need, these things -

0:24:320:24:35

you need to be covered, and I didn't even think about men, I didn't even

0:24:350:24:38

think about the division of guys and women

0:24:380:24:40

and where they're going to be sat.

0:24:400:24:42

I just thought we're all treated equal and all sat in one room.

0:24:420:24:45

Having made a blunder last night, Alana's asked Shanna over

0:24:500:24:53

to talk about how Muslim women ought to dress.

0:24:530:24:56

Like many converts,

0:24:570:24:59

Alana's interpretation of the dresscode is strict,

0:24:590:25:02

but not all Muslim girls are the same, particularly Shanna.

0:25:020:25:06

Under Islam, haram means forbidden and halal means allowed.

0:25:070:25:11

I've actually 'halal-ified' my wardrobe.

0:25:120:25:15

How do you 'halal-ify' your wardrobe?

0:25:160:25:19

-Halal-ified?

-Halal-ified.

0:25:200:25:22

This is really nice. You'd probably like this.

0:25:220:25:24

This is something that I would wear, out of Primark, with tights.

0:25:240:25:29

But if I've got a top on and this skirt, then I can still wear it.

0:25:290:25:32

-Yeah.

-Do you know what I mean? So I've 'halal-ified' it!

0:25:320:25:35

So that's 'halal-ified'.

0:25:350:25:36

Yeah, that's my term that I've created, so yeah.

0:25:360:25:39

It's gorgeous, that.

0:25:390:25:41

Now, my non-halal stuff, which would be...

0:25:410:25:43

Non-halal! You've got this division.

0:25:430:25:47

Yeah, I've separated it all.

0:25:470:25:49

So, this would cover me, but it doesn't actually cover my bum,

0:25:490:25:51

so I would know if I was wearing that,

0:25:510:25:54

I'd have to wear a baggier skirt.

0:25:540:25:56

-Oh.

-You know.

0:25:560:25:57

But it's still baggy?

0:25:570:25:59

Yeah, but it doesn't cover my bum.

0:25:590:26:01

Fair enough.

0:26:010:26:02

So I've 'halal-ified' it!

0:26:020:26:04

So, I'm 'halal-ified' now, aren't I, in your eyes?

0:26:040:26:06

Aye, your bum is covered.

0:26:060:26:08

But your, yeah, I won't even go there.

0:26:080:26:10

OK, I'm half 'halal-ified'.

0:26:100:26:12

You're half 'halal-ified', yeah.

0:26:120:26:13

-I wore these to my cousin's wedding.

-Oh, wow.

0:26:130:26:16

Yeah, so I've kept all my good shoes cos I just love them.

0:26:160:26:18

And I think you'd like these ones.

0:26:180:26:20

These are the best ones.

0:26:200:26:22

So, I wouldn't wear these going out.

0:26:220:26:24

Why?

0:26:240:26:25

Because it's not part of the dress code.

0:26:250:26:28

Are you saying they're not 'halal-ified'?

0:26:280:26:30

No, they're not 'halal-ified'.

0:26:300:26:32

How could shoes possibly...?

0:26:320:26:33

Cos you're walking and wiggling at the same time.

0:26:330:26:36

Are these OK? Are these 'halal-ified'?

0:26:360:26:38

They are, but any higher than that and I wouldn't wear them.

0:26:380:26:41

Surely it's not against...

0:26:410:26:43

Uh-huh.

0:26:430:26:44

I've not heard of it.

0:26:440:26:47

Let me 'hijab-ify' you, and see how good you look.

0:26:470:26:49

Oh, my God!

0:26:490:26:50

Honestly.

0:26:510:26:52

Here we go.

0:26:540:26:56

At least it keeps you warm.

0:26:590:27:00

Yes.

0:27:030:27:04

Oh, beautiful.

0:27:070:27:09

Shall I put my hair up?

0:27:090:27:11

-How do I look?

-You look beautiful.

0:27:200:27:21

-Are you serious?

-Mm-hmm.

0:27:210:27:23

Take them un-halal boots off.

0:27:230:27:26

It's the most difficult thing to go out and be covered.

0:27:290:27:32

You look beautiful, though.

0:27:320:27:35

It's the first time Shanna's come face-to-face with how strict

0:27:350:27:38

Islam can be when it comes to rules on female dress.

0:27:380:27:41

I look Muslim.

0:27:420:27:44

I don't even know what I feel.

0:27:440:27:46

Transformed?

0:27:480:27:49

You're covered.

0:27:500:27:51

It's not like I was naked and not covered before. It's just...

0:27:510:27:55

I've got something baggy on me, and then you can't see my hair.

0:27:580:28:02

And, em, I feel less pretty.

0:28:030:28:05

Does that sound really bad?

0:28:060:28:08

Well, the whole point of wearing hijab is that you're not going out

0:28:090:28:12

and drawing attention to yourself, so I suppose it's working.

0:28:120:28:15

I don't, I don't, I'm not ready for it, no.

0:28:170:28:19

Shanna didn't expect to be criticised for the way she dresses.

0:28:220:28:26

I don't mean to sound rude to the people who agree with Alana,

0:28:260:28:30

but I totally disagree with that, that you can't wear high heels.

0:28:300:28:33

And my boots were not 'halal-ified' for her.

0:28:350:28:38

I think she was looking at me thinking,

0:28:380:28:41

I'm born into this, as a Muslim, so I think she automatically thought

0:28:410:28:47

"You should be practising and doing what I'm doing,

0:28:470:28:51

"if you're not already, and I've only been doing this for two years",

0:28:510:28:55

and I think she was comparing and contrasting us quite a lot.

0:28:550:28:57

I felt judged by her.

0:28:570:28:59

I'm happy the way I am,

0:28:590:29:02

and it doesn't mean I'm not a Muslim cos I'm not doing it.

0:29:020:29:05

And just cos I'm modern, that's got nothing to do with my religion.

0:29:050:29:08

I will be dying, I was born as a modern British Muslim

0:29:080:29:14

and I will die as a modern British Muslim.

0:29:140:29:17

There's nothing wrong with it!

0:29:180:29:21

It isn't the first time Shanna's felt judged.

0:29:210:29:24

Her modelling career has attracted criticism

0:29:240:29:26

from some Muslims in the past.

0:29:260:29:28

In 2011, Shanna attempted to become the first Muslim to represent

0:29:290:29:34

Britain in the Miss Universe competition.

0:29:340:29:36

The decision led to threats from members of the Muslim community.

0:29:370:29:41

One Miss Universe hopeful has come under an ugly attack

0:29:410:29:44

for wanting to represent Britain in the glamorous pageant.

0:29:440:29:47

She has been threatened with death because of her religion.

0:29:470:29:50

Some of the fellow Muslims out there are saying this is against Islam,

0:29:500:29:54

a woman, as they put it, should not be parading around.

0:29:540:29:57

I don't think I'm doing anything wrong.

0:29:570:30:00

We live in England, we live in... I'm British.

0:30:000:30:02

Yes, I'm Muslim, but we live in such a Western society,

0:30:020:30:05

I didn't think, "Oh, as a Muslim, I can't do this."

0:30:050:30:08

That never crossed my mind.

0:30:090:30:11

Shanna was devastated by the intolerance she met with.

0:30:130:30:16

The hate mail sent to her was so distressing, it's the first time

0:30:160:30:20

she's been able to look at it since the competition.

0:30:200:30:23

"She won't look pretty after having her head removed

0:30:230:30:26

"by a rusty pen knife".

0:30:260:30:27

"You trashy whore, and you should publically announce

0:30:280:30:31

"that you are not a Muslim".

0:30:310:30:33

"Stop disrespecting Islam by giving this image."

0:30:330:30:36

"You are nothing but a whore and may the soul of your father burn

0:30:360:30:40

"in the deepest pits of hell for allowing his daughter

0:30:400:30:43

"to publicly shame Islam".

0:30:430:30:45

"If you were a real Muslim, you would care more about

0:30:460:30:49

"protecting the image of Islam that we fight to preserve."

0:30:490:30:52

"Instead, you just take all your clothes off

0:30:530:30:55

"and crave for personal attention."

0:30:550:30:58

"You will burn in hell next to your father,

0:30:580:31:01

"therefore you are just trash."

0:31:010:31:03

I need a tissue, I think.

0:31:070:31:08

This is bad.

0:31:090:31:10

Forget that I'm Muslim or religion, Christianity or whatever,

0:31:120:31:16

I'm a human being.

0:31:160:31:18

If you say something mean about me, I'm going to get emotional.

0:31:180:31:21

I've got feelings and emotions

0:31:210:31:23

and I think some people kind of forget that.

0:31:230:31:25

Shanna's back on the road again.

0:31:320:31:35

There's a whole new issue she wants to find out about -

0:31:350:31:37

what family life's like when you convert to Islam.

0:31:370:31:40

Lisa married a Pakistani Muslim man seven years ago,

0:31:420:31:46

but she only properly converted to Islam herself last year.

0:31:460:31:49

Lisa lives in Reading. She's a full-time mum,

0:31:510:31:54

and her work's cut out bringing up her three daughters.

0:31:540:31:56

I've loaded the dishwasher, fed the cats.

0:31:590:32:01

That's it, that's all done this morning,

0:32:010:32:03

until we get back from school and then there's hoovering.

0:32:030:32:06

She wears the hijab full-time, Ameera does. Wears it all the time.

0:32:080:32:12

Ameera! It's ready.

0:32:120:32:14

Sometimes it would be easier for them all to wear hijab,

0:32:190:32:21

then we wouldn't have to worry about hair.

0:32:210:32:24

Does it affect you, do you think, me wearing hijab?

0:32:240:32:26

Affect me, how?

0:32:260:32:28

Do you feel embarrassed or anything?

0:32:280:32:30

No? That's good, then.

0:32:300:32:32

No, cos all people are interesting.

0:32:320:32:35

That's right. I taught you well, chick, didn't I?

0:32:350:32:38

There you go, you're done.

0:32:380:32:39

My nanny, she's the one, she looks older than that now,

0:32:390:32:43

but she's the one who says about me,

0:32:430:32:45

"Oh, that's the girl who wears the salami on her head".

0:32:450:32:48

But she's got dementia so she hardly even remembers me,

0:32:500:32:53

she just calls me the girl with the salami on her head.

0:32:530:32:56

My mum calls me a nun on the run.

0:32:570:32:59

My neighbour says "Here comes the old ninja." She calls me a ninja.

0:32:590:33:02

But, yeah, they don't do it in a nasty way.

0:33:030:33:06

It's all a bit of banter, cos they know I like the banter

0:33:060:33:09

and I give the banter back.

0:33:090:33:11

Come on, then, let's go for a walk in the woods!

0:33:150:33:18

Lisa's made a big decision for the family this year.

0:33:180:33:21

Instead of celebrating the traditional British holidays,

0:33:210:33:24

they'll observe the Muslim festival, Eid.

0:33:240:33:27

We're not having an English Christmas this year,

0:33:280:33:30

so this is our very big Eid, for us.

0:33:300:33:32

It's going to be kind of weird cos we've always celebrated Christmas.

0:33:330:33:36

Cos I'm a Muslim, I don't want to celebrate Christmas.

0:33:360:33:38

Cos it's not part of being a Muslim,

0:33:380:33:40

it's not part of the religion.

0:33:400:33:42

I believe that if we do a Christmas,

0:33:420:33:45

then we're put in partnership with our God

0:33:450:33:48

by celebrating something to do with another religion's God.

0:33:480:33:51

So, yeah. That's why.

0:33:510:33:53

Following Islamic festivals might be one big step,

0:33:560:33:59

but there are other big decisions to be made.

0:33:590:34:02

Lisa's going Islamic clothes shopping in London,

0:34:050:34:08

and Shanna's coming to meet her,

0:34:080:34:10

but it's the one sort of fashion she isn't familiar with.

0:34:100:34:13

-Hi.

-Hi, you all right?

0:34:130:34:15

-I'm Shanna.

-I'm Lisa. Nice to meet you.

0:34:150:34:18

From bonnets to one-pieces, it's a whole new shopping lingo.

0:34:190:34:23

I would not wear that.

0:34:240:34:26

Lisa's decided to make a controversial step made

0:34:290:34:31

by a minority of Muslim women.

0:34:310:34:34

She wants to cover her face fully, and wear the niqab.

0:34:340:34:37

How can you see through that?

0:34:370:34:38

It's netted. I can see you.

0:34:380:34:41

You can breathe through it. It's really thin.

0:34:410:34:43

-How do you eat with that on?

-Lift it up, and eat.

0:34:430:34:45

Would you really wear that?

0:34:450:34:48

Yes, without a doubt.

0:34:480:34:49

-Every single day?

-Every single day.

0:34:490:34:50

Once you start wearing it, you can't wear it part-time.

0:34:500:34:53

That's why it's a big decision. I like it.

0:34:530:34:55

Do you not feel weird covering your face up?

0:34:550:34:58

Keep it for my husband's eyes only.

0:34:580:35:01

But Lisa's hasn't made the decision for her husband,

0:35:010:35:04

she wants to do it as a sign of commitment to her faith.

0:35:040:35:07

What would your husband think?

0:35:070:35:09

He don't want me to wear one.

0:35:090:35:10

Certain scholars believe it shows extra piety,

0:35:110:35:15

but to some it can seem like a radical step.

0:35:150:35:18

Do you think people look at you and think "extremist"?

0:35:180:35:21

Yeah, cos they don't know who I am.

0:35:210:35:23

Lisa was a bit of a bad girl before she converted,

0:35:280:35:30

and Shana wants to find out what sort of life she left behind.

0:35:300:35:33

Although tattoos are forbidden under Islam,

0:35:340:35:37

they still remind her of her colourful past.

0:35:370:35:39

I was looking at your hand. You've still got tattoos.

0:35:400:35:43

Oh, I've got loads of tattoos. I've got loads of tattoos.

0:35:430:35:45

How many have you got?

0:35:450:35:46

I'm covered.

0:35:460:35:48

Are you serious?

0:35:480:35:49

-On my leg, and both my feet are done.

-Let's have a look.

0:35:490:35:52

Nanny, you love your nanny, don't you?

0:35:520:35:54

That's my nanny that passed, my dad's mum.

0:35:540:35:57

-But I know I got them before I was Muslim.

-Yeah.

0:35:570:36:00

What do you feel Islam has brought to you?

0:36:000:36:02

It has definitely calmed me down.

0:36:020:36:05

I was a wild thing, feisty. I used to fight.

0:36:050:36:09

Literally?

0:36:090:36:11

Argue in the street, you know.

0:36:110:36:14

We used to walk through town, especially with my other sister,

0:36:140:36:17

and if somebody would bump into us, we'd have a big row in the town.

0:36:170:36:22

You know, I think I've changed quite a lot.

0:36:220:36:24

-For the better?

-Yeah, definitely.

0:36:240:36:26

But Lisa has a very unusual family set-up that's allowed under Islam,

0:36:270:36:32

but is shocking to most Westerners.

0:36:320:36:35

All my friends know I'm a co-wife. I've never kept that from anybody.

0:36:350:36:39

-You're a co-wife?

-Yeah.

0:36:390:36:42

It's just not right, a man being shared!

0:36:420:36:44

-Anything's not right, but...

-How did you meet?

0:36:440:36:46

I met him in the park behind my mum's house, we used to hang

0:36:460:36:49

about a lot there and then he'd come and then we fell in love, I suppose.

0:36:490:36:53

How old were you?

0:36:530:36:54

Fourteen. And we was like, love's young dream.

0:36:540:36:57

Then his family made him marry her.

0:36:570:37:00

When Lisa was 18, she found out her boyfriend had gone

0:37:000:37:04

to Pakistan for an arranged marriage.

0:37:040:37:07

Six years later, he married Lisa in an Islamic religious ceremony.

0:37:070:37:12

Islam allows a man to have up to four wives

0:37:120:37:14

so long as he treats them equally.

0:37:140:37:16

So, with the co-wife, do you live in the same house?

0:37:160:37:19

What, as his other wife? I'd kill her.

0:37:190:37:21

We'd kill each other, actually, cos we don't like each other.

0:37:220:37:26

So you wouldn't be able to tolerate that?

0:37:260:37:28

Bed-hopping in the night!

0:37:280:37:29

At least when he's there I can't see what he's doing

0:37:290:37:31

and don't have to witness it for myself.

0:37:310:37:34

Oh, doing it under the same roof, crap.

0:37:340:37:37

I've set rules, though.

0:37:380:37:40

I've told him I don't want him to have sex with her.

0:37:400:37:42

He's got a choice. He has to choose. If he wants to have sex with her,

0:37:420:37:45

then have sex with her, don't have sex with me.

0:37:450:37:47

But I'm 30, I've decided to be in this situation.

0:37:470:37:50

I'm in love with a man.

0:37:500:37:51

Lisa has had difficulty being accepted

0:37:530:37:55

by the born Muslim community, and this has caused her trouble at home.

0:37:550:37:59

I don't have nothing to do with his family at all.

0:38:010:38:04

Nothing at all?

0:38:040:38:05

Nope.

0:38:050:38:06

Nothing at all. Cos I'm white, I'm English.

0:38:060:38:09

It doesn't matter that I'm Muslim, I could be black and Muslim,

0:38:090:38:12

they still wouldn't accept me cos I'm not Pakistani.

0:38:120:38:15

-Even though you've converted?

-Yeah.

0:38:150:38:17

16 years together,

0:38:190:38:20

and I've never once sat in a room with his mum or dad.

0:38:200:38:23

Lisa's closest friend is her sister, Kimberley.

0:38:240:38:28

As a British girl,

0:38:280:38:29

it makes her angry to see her sister be a second wife.

0:38:290:38:33

When we was younger, she was crying in the bedroom cos he'd gone

0:38:330:38:35

and got married, but she still accepted it.

0:38:350:38:40

She's still gone and accepted it now, so it's really quite

0:38:400:38:43

frustrating sometimes, like, that she's actually putting up with it.

0:38:430:38:47

I couldn't do that.

0:38:480:38:49

She's a strong Muslim woman, so she shouldn't have to be,

0:38:490:38:53

like, the second best.

0:38:530:38:55

She should be the best and the only. That's the way that life is.

0:38:560:39:00

I think she puts on a really strong face

0:39:000:39:02

like it doesn't really bother her, but it does.

0:39:020:39:06

It does.

0:39:060:39:07

Because she's having to...

0:39:080:39:10

half the week, live like a single parent.

0:39:100:39:12

I don't think a man should be allowed to marry two women

0:39:140:39:17

and live two separate lives like that.

0:39:170:39:19

It's not fair on children. They're confused.

0:39:190:39:22

Oh, my God. She's a co-wife. It's crazy.

0:39:260:39:29

and she, the co-wife,

0:39:310:39:33

the other wife lives down the road, and she's accepted that.

0:39:330:39:36

It's in Pakistani Muslim culture that a man can marry up to four times.

0:39:360:39:42

I would literally kill my husband if he ever even thought about

0:39:420:39:46

the idea of being...

0:39:460:39:48

Oh, no, it just makes me sick.

0:39:480:39:49

Come on, you have got to be one hell of a strong woman to take that.

0:39:490:39:53

Shanna's learning there are real obstacles to overcome for converts.

0:39:570:40:01

Next she's going up north to meet Inaya,

0:40:010:40:03

who's has a totally different struggle.

0:40:030:40:06

She can't find a Muslim husband at all.

0:40:060:40:08

She splits her time between working in a busy call centre in Accrington

0:40:130:40:17

and her full social life with friends.

0:40:170:40:19

She converted to Islam four years ago

0:40:210:40:23

after going through a difficult time.

0:40:230:40:25

I've always been interested in Islam from an early age

0:40:260:40:29

from being at high school.

0:40:290:40:31

I've had loads of Muslim friends.

0:40:310:40:33

When I got to about 21, 22,

0:40:330:40:36

I were going through a really rough patch at home,

0:40:360:40:39

so I decided to turn to Islam.

0:40:390:40:42

I literally woke up one day thinking "I need to do this before I die.

0:40:440:40:48

"I need to do it, because if I die and I'm not a Muslim,

0:40:480:40:50

"I'm not going to be happy" or, you know.

0:40:500:40:54

I wanted to go to Paradise, so I wanted to do it.

0:40:540:40:59

Hello, how can I help with your account?

0:40:590:41:01

When I took my shahada, the weight just, I'm not joking,

0:41:020:41:05

it tingles me now just thinking about it,

0:41:050:41:07

but the weight just got took off my shoulders like I can't explain.

0:41:070:41:11

Inaya lives in Haslingden,

0:41:140:41:16

a small town in Lancashire Shanna knows well from her childhood.

0:41:160:41:20

-Haslingden. Been here before.

-Have you?

0:41:220:41:24

-Yeah, I went to school here.

-No.

0:41:240:41:27

Yeah, Haslingden High School.

0:41:270:41:28

Oh, me too!

0:41:280:41:30

Oh, my God! What year were you?

0:41:300:41:33

I'm 28.

0:41:330:41:34

So you're two years older than me.

0:41:340:41:36

It's definitely the same. Nothing has changed here.

0:41:360:41:39

For Inaya, it's hard to meet a prospective Muslim partner

0:41:410:41:44

when she lives in a remote northern town.

0:41:440:41:46

I would like to just bump into, you know,

0:41:490:41:52

"Oh, sorry, I've seen you in the shopping centre."

0:41:520:41:55

Like, literally just walk into someone,

0:41:550:41:57

that would be my ideal way of meeting someone.

0:41:570:41:59

But it doesn't work like that, does it?

0:41:590:42:01

Many Muslims have marriages arranged by their family,

0:42:010:42:05

but without relatives to help, Inaya's had to resort

0:42:050:42:08

to more ingenious ways to find a husband - Muslim speed dating!

0:42:080:42:13

You've got this massive audience of parents.

0:42:130:42:16

Oh, no, watching you.

0:42:160:42:18

Yeah, so I'm like, sat here and I'm, like, trying.

0:42:180:42:20

You're nervous as it is.

0:42:200:42:21

Yeah, and I'm trying to talk to this guy in front

0:42:210:42:23

and the parents are in there somewhere.

0:42:230:42:25

Are they the guy's parents?

0:42:250:42:27

Yeah. Everyone's parents are standing there watching,

0:42:270:42:30

I'm like, oh, no.

0:42:300:42:32

So, it's pressure from there and then.

0:42:320:42:34

And like, I had guys coming to talk to me who later on,

0:42:360:42:39

I started talking to them, and then they'd come round with

0:42:390:42:42

barriers like, my mum doesn't want me to, you know, talk to you.

0:42:420:42:47

Don't talk to you? Why?

0:42:470:42:48

Because they come up with silly excuses that I'm too old,

0:42:480:42:52

I'm too tall, I'm going to back to how I used to be, you know.

0:42:520:42:56

-What sort of rubbish is that?

-Yeah.

0:42:560:42:57

Inaya's best friends have stuck with her every step of the way,

0:42:580:43:02

through conversion, and now through the search to find a husband.

0:43:020:43:06

My friends, they've really been supportive.

0:43:060:43:09

When I started wearing the head scarf it was a shock,

0:43:090:43:11

but they've got used to me wearing the scarf

0:43:110:43:14

and they don't even see the scarf anymore.

0:43:140:43:17

But then when I take it off, they're like,

0:43:170:43:19

"Wow, I've not seen your hair for a year!"

0:43:190:43:23

So, they appreciate it and that's when I say

0:43:230:43:25

"That's why I cover it up".

0:43:250:43:27

The moment Inaya converted to Islam, the dating rules changed.

0:43:280:43:33

She couldn't go out to bars serving alcohol, or meet with guys alone.

0:43:330:43:36

Shanna's curious to find out what her new tactics are.

0:43:370:43:41

This is where I go browsing for men.

0:43:410:43:44

So this is how they see it.

0:43:470:43:49

OK.

0:43:490:43:50

There's me at a wedding.

0:43:500:43:52

You look so pretty, you look stunning.

0:43:520:43:55

Seriously.

0:43:550:43:56

Oh, God!

0:43:580:43:59

I've met people off here, but then you obviously study the profile

0:44:010:44:05

and they say they're 5' 11", a really good height for myself,

0:44:050:44:08

and you turn up and they're 5' 3".

0:44:080:44:10

Oh, my God.

0:44:100:44:12

Oh, that's happened!

0:44:120:44:13

So they lie?

0:44:130:44:14

Yeah, yeah.

0:44:140:44:15

And the photos don't even, they don't even look the same

0:44:150:44:18

when they show up!

0:44:180:44:19

Totally different picture?

0:44:190:44:21

Totally.

0:44:210:44:23

Inaya's encountered many problems.

0:44:230:44:25

Often the guys just want to have fun

0:44:250:44:28

and aren't serious enough about marriage.

0:44:280:44:30

Obviously, we're not allowed to date.

0:44:300:44:32

If I am alone with a guy, things could happen

0:44:320:44:34

when it shouldn't happen.

0:44:340:44:36

He wants dating, whereas I don't.

0:44:360:44:39

He's put non-religious.

0:44:390:44:40

And he's a Muslim?

0:44:400:44:41

Well, I'm assuming so.

0:44:410:44:42

Yeah, he is. Surname.

0:44:420:44:44

If they can't tell people on here that they're Muslim,

0:44:440:44:47

they're not going to be telling people outside that they're Muslim.

0:44:470:44:49

Yeah.

0:44:490:44:51

Even if she finds someone who's devout,

0:44:510:44:53

their families might have different plans for their sons.

0:44:530:44:56

They might already have someone in mind

0:44:560:44:58

for the son or daughter to get married to.

0:44:580:45:01

Or they want their new daughter-in-law

0:45:010:45:03

to live with the parents.

0:45:030:45:05

I don't mind doing that for a short period of time,

0:45:050:45:10

but I'm not willing to live with the parents forever.

0:45:100:45:13

I don't know how converts get married, I really don't.

0:45:130:45:16

It's so hard and I can't tell you how much pain it's caused me.

0:45:170:45:21

Even my mum's turned round and said,

0:45:210:45:23

"Does that mean you're never going to get married?"

0:45:230:45:26

Shanna's surprised Inaya's found it hard to adapt

0:45:260:45:29

to the marriage customs of the traditional Muslim community.

0:45:290:45:34

Hiya, you all right?

0:45:340:45:35

Inaya is having massive difficulty finding a husband,

0:45:350:45:38

and I didn't ever think that would be a problem.

0:45:380:45:41

And she's only having this difficulty cos she's converted.

0:45:410:45:45

Otherwise she could just find anyone she wants.

0:45:450:45:48

How it would work normally for Muslims is we help each other,

0:45:480:45:51

we introduce each other to each other's families and word of mouth.

0:45:510:45:57

She hasn't got that, she's just totally on her own.

0:45:570:46:00

Thank you. Bye-bye.

0:46:000:46:01

Learning about the difficulties converts face

0:46:070:46:10

has made Shanna reflect on her own conflicts with her religion.

0:46:100:46:14

I'm questioning what I can do, can I do modelling?

0:46:140:46:17

If I can, what kind of modelling? That has come to my attention.

0:46:170:46:21

It's not like you've seen me on the Nuts magazine or something,

0:46:210:46:24

or an FHM or something, no!

0:46:240:46:27

Shanna's come to Edinburgh hoping to find answers

0:46:310:46:34

for her questions about her modelling career.

0:46:340:46:37

She wants to meet a convert who's more like her,

0:46:380:46:41

a modern British Muslim.

0:46:410:46:43

I'm going to meet a convert who's a model.

0:46:430:46:47

Maybe she has the answers that I don't have.

0:46:470:46:49

Maybe she can back it up - you can be a model and a Muslim.

0:46:500:46:53

Maybe she can relate to me, cos we're just the same.

0:46:540:46:57

Ayesha's an internationally successful model,

0:47:020:47:05

and today she's working on some of her own fashion designs.

0:47:050:47:09

She's appeared on catwalks form New York to Paris,

0:47:090:47:12

and she's worked for leading brands Top Shop and Mulberry.

0:47:120:47:15

She grew up on a deprived council estate in Edinburgh,

0:47:170:47:20

but at 16 she was scouted by a model agency, and she shot to stardom.

0:47:200:47:25

She converted to Islam four years ago,

0:47:270:47:30

but has she found it hard to combine modelling with her faith?

0:47:300:47:33

I've had a bit of a struggle.

0:47:350:47:36

Do you find that you have that struggle?

0:47:380:47:41

Can you be a Muslim and a model?

0:47:410:47:43

When I first got into Islam, I stopped everything.

0:47:430:47:46

All fashion, anything that was even, yeah.

0:47:460:47:50

You stopped all fashion?

0:47:500:47:51

Yeah, I changed, I totally was covering,

0:47:510:47:53

I was probably a bit too extreme.

0:47:530:47:57

Although Ayesha knows catwalk modelling's controversial

0:47:570:48:00

if you're a Muslim, she's justified it to herself.

0:48:000:48:03

It all comes back to what you're wearing and your intention.

0:48:030:48:08

So if I'm on a catwalk and I'm wearing a dress

0:48:080:48:12

and I've, like, beautified my appearance

0:48:120:48:14

and stuff like that.

0:48:140:48:17

I think there's a big difference in me walking down a catwalk

0:48:170:48:20

dressed like that and me walking down the street dressed like that.

0:48:200:48:23

-Yeah.

-Cos what is my intention?

0:48:230:48:25

Well, my intention is to show these clothes in this makeup

0:48:250:48:28

to people who want to buy it for their shop, whereas if you're

0:48:280:48:31

making yourself really beautiful and walking down the street, then that's

0:48:310:48:35

a different intention.

0:48:350:48:36

-It's not like you're doing it out of necessity.

-Yeah.

0:48:360:48:38

Do you know what I mean?

0:48:380:48:40

Ayesha's managed to reconcile modelling with her faith,

0:48:400:48:44

but she's had to make tough decisions about the work she does.

0:48:440:48:47

I try not make stuff that I wouldn't wear.

0:48:470:48:50

-Yeah.

-You know?

0:48:500:48:51

Like, I never do bikini or underwear,

0:48:510:48:53

but I did make a pair of shorts

0:48:530:48:55

and I was having this dilemma, like, oh, my God, these are shorts.

0:48:550:48:58

I can't wear shorts!

0:48:580:48:59

How tall are you without boots?

0:49:030:49:05

Quite tall, just under 5' 9".

0:49:050:49:06

I feel a bit like Laurel and Hardy.

0:49:110:49:13

It actually suits you!

0:49:130:49:16

Man, that looks crazy on me!

0:49:160:49:18

You look good in that.

0:49:210:49:22

Oh, behave, you can't see my face!

0:49:220:49:25

I always had this stupid, silly perception that Muslim converts

0:49:250:49:29

are just strict, they're just like...

0:49:290:49:31

I didn't think they could be so fun to be with.

0:49:330:49:36

Oh, that's so cute.

0:49:360:49:37

It might seem like Ayesha's answered Shanna's questions,

0:49:390:49:43

but she isn't convinced.

0:49:430:49:44

Ayesha, she was a really, really lovely person.

0:49:460:49:49

I was really shocked when I saw her, like the way she was.

0:49:500:49:54

She was just so cool, down to earth, so totally into fashion.

0:49:540:49:59

I really thought I would have answers from Ayesha, but no.

0:50:000:50:02

I think I need to ask those questions, I need a stronger answer.

0:50:030:50:07

Shanna's made a brave decision.

0:50:080:50:11

Of all the people she wants to ask a second opinion from, it's Alana,

0:50:110:50:15

the convert who was most critical of her dress.

0:50:150:50:18

I can't live without my heels. That's something I couldn't sacrifice.

0:50:180:50:21

Well, you wear your heels, and you just go lower and lower and lower.

0:50:210:50:24

Take them un-halal boots off!

0:50:240:50:26

What do you think of me being a model?

0:50:290:50:31

Oh, God, that laugh!

0:50:340:50:35

Honestly.

0:50:370:50:38

As a Muslim,

0:50:400:50:43

if you're a practicing Muslim, then I do think that

0:50:440:50:48

you shouldn't be doing it,

0:50:480:50:51

because the whole point of that is that you're "look at me",

0:50:510:50:54

it's defeating the purpose, do you know what I mean? It's not...

0:50:540:50:57

But what is it, like it's your intentions right, that's just a job?

0:50:570:51:01

You're still showing your body, showing what you look like

0:51:010:51:04

Even though you may have good intentions,

0:51:040:51:06

you're still doing it for people to look at you,

0:51:060:51:08

do you know what I mean?

0:51:080:51:09

To walk out the door to show off how beautiful you are.

0:51:090:51:12

That's the whole point of wearing the hijab.

0:51:120:51:14

What Alana's told Shanna raises the question

0:51:170:51:20

about whether she can be a model at all.

0:51:200:51:23

Many young women feel it's their right to wear what they want,

0:51:230:51:26

but Islam teaches that a woman should protect her modesty,

0:51:260:51:29

and her beauty should be kept for her husband's eyes only.

0:51:290:51:32

Shanna's getting ready to go to Ayesha's fashion show.

0:51:340:51:38

It would normally be her ideal night out.

0:51:380:51:40

Hello! How are you?

0:51:410:51:44

It's just going to be a little show,

0:51:440:51:46

a little preview of the spring/summer selection.

0:51:460:51:49

Just hang out and have a nice time.

0:51:500:51:52

But Shanna's journey's coming to an end,

0:51:540:51:57

and after everything she's learnt,

0:51:570:51:59

she's wondering how far she's prepared to go for her faith.

0:51:590:52:02

I kind of feel really weird.

0:52:040:52:05

Like, I was just thinking about talking to Alana about fashion

0:52:070:52:11

and then I'm at this fashion show where there's short dresses,

0:52:110:52:15

there's make up, glamour,

0:52:150:52:17

and Alana's like, "You shouldn't be doing this".

0:52:170:52:21

And it's like I'm just doing the total opposite of what she's saying

0:52:210:52:24

about making yourself better and being a good Muslim.

0:52:240:52:27

So, yeah, it just felt all weird.

0:52:290:52:31

I feel a bit, I feel a bit lost.

0:52:320:52:35

Shanna's come to some important realisations

0:52:410:52:44

about what Islam means to her.

0:52:440:52:47

After seeing the converts bettering themselves

0:52:470:52:50

and following a total new faith and new religion

0:52:500:52:53

it's made me realise that, well, it's my religion, why am I not doing it?

0:52:530:52:57

It kind of just woke me up to what my faith is and what it means to me.

0:52:590:53:03

I believe in Allah, I believe in my religion.

0:53:050:53:08

I think changes are going to change in my life, slowly, very slowly.

0:53:090:53:14

I thought about wearing a headscarf,

0:53:140:53:15

I don't think I'd ever wear a headscarf.

0:53:150:53:18

I'm still going to be modern.

0:53:180:53:21

I love this western culture, this society I live in.

0:53:210:53:24

I'm British, I live here, it's who I am.

0:53:240:53:27

What do these insights mean for her career?

0:53:280:53:31

Since she was a child all she's ever dreamed of is being a model.

0:53:310:53:35

That doesn't mean that's it, end of my modelling career.

0:53:350:53:38

I think it's just where I'm going to be more selective

0:53:380:53:41

to what work I'm doing.

0:53:410:53:44

And rather than just letting a designer say, "Oh, put this on"

0:53:440:53:47

and walk on the catwalk, it's not going to be that case,

0:53:470:53:50

it's going to be like

0:53:500:53:51

"I'm not going to wear that cos I don't think I look modest in that."

0:53:510:53:55

Shanna's decided to call Alana with a surprising request.

0:53:570:54:01

I was thinking a lot about what we talked about,

0:54:030:54:06

and it, kind of, all made so much sense and stuff

0:54:080:54:11

and it made me think about things,

0:54:110:54:13

and I thought, maybe, sometime, when you are free,

0:54:140:54:18

we could go to the mosque and pray some time.

0:54:180:54:21

'OK.'

0:54:220:54:24

It's Friday prayers at Glasgow Central, and the mosque is packed.

0:54:320:54:36

It's the end of Shanna's journey,

0:54:400:54:42

and it'll be the first time she's ever prayed in a mosque.

0:54:420:54:46

You're going to have to do this for me.

0:54:460:54:49

I'm going to have to halal-ify you again.

0:54:490:54:52

A convert is making me something I kind of already should be,

0:54:520:54:56

if you know what I mean?

0:54:560:54:58

OK, are you ready?

0:54:580:54:59

Yeah.

0:54:590:55:01

Hijabified? OK, let's go.

0:55:010:55:03

Can you speak out loud?

0:55:060:55:08

My Arabic's not great.

0:55:080:55:11

Mine's not good either.

0:55:110:55:12

OK, so, this is just the way I've learnt it.

0:55:120:55:15

So, you start with the Adhan.

0:55:150:55:17

Do you keep your eyes..?

0:55:170:55:18

You need to keep your eyes open.

0:55:180:55:20

-OK.

-Yeah?

0:55:200:55:22

Mm-hmm. And straight down?

0:55:220:55:24

Instead of ahead?

0:55:240:55:25

-Yeah.

-OK.

0:55:250:55:27

THEY PRAY IN ARABIC

0:55:280:55:33

Shanna's surprised by what she's learnt

0:55:330:55:35

about the reasons why girls convert to Islam.

0:55:350:55:38

Now, as I've met the converts,

0:55:380:55:41

I've understood how they've got this structure,

0:55:410:55:43

they follow these guidelines

0:55:430:55:45

and they've found peace within themselves.

0:55:450:55:47

I always imagined that converts just convert because they've found

0:55:490:55:54

a Muslim partner and they have to.

0:55:540:55:56

I didn't think they want to.

0:55:560:55:58

The hijab means "I am a Muslim, accept me for who I am now".

0:56:000:56:03

I feel the converts have just given up drinking, going out

0:56:040:56:07

and that lifestyle they had before because they've found a faith

0:56:070:56:10

and they don't need that in their lives anymore.

0:56:100:56:13

Ultimately, she's learnt a lot about herself.

0:56:130:56:16

Looking back at, and reflecting on being in Miss Universe,

0:56:160:56:20

and what it says in the Qur'an, I can't change that,

0:56:200:56:22

and it does say a woman should be dressed in modesty.

0:56:220:56:25

Yeah, I shouldn't have done those things,

0:56:250:56:27

and all I can do is try making myself a better Muslim.
