94 miles north of the Scottish mainland,

0:00:040:00:07

where the blustery Atlantic meets the North Sea, lies Shetland -

0:00:070:00:11

an archipelago of some 100 or so islands, mostly uninhabited.

0:00:110:00:16

Until the late 15th century, they belonged to Scandinavia.

0:00:170:00:20

And being closer to Bergen than Edinburgh,

0:00:200:00:23

the Islanders remain proud of their Norse heritage.

0:00:230:00:26

Recently, new riches have been discovered -

0:00:260:00:29

supplementing the island's staple of farming and fishing.

0:00:290:00:33

The most northerly island is Unst, where locals mix tradition

0:00:340:00:38

with innovation to survive in a fast-changing world.

0:00:380:00:42

In the days to come, the 140-year-old agricultural show

0:00:440:00:49

gets the competitive juices going.

0:00:490:00:51

My knitting is very amateurish,

0:00:510:00:54

so I've to do quirky things like this!

0:00:540:00:56

One of the amazing features of these older people is just

0:00:570:01:01

how competitive they are.

0:01:010:01:03

Frank and Jem spruce up filly foal Sula to compete for a rosette.

0:01:030:01:08

-The trouble with this kind of pony is...

-Too much white.

0:01:080:01:10

..too much white.

0:01:100:01:12

And at the gin distillery, there's great excitement over a new flavour.

0:01:120:01:17

He's asked for seaweed!

0:01:170:01:19

Seven years after coming to Shetland

0:01:540:01:57

and falling in love with the islands and their people,

0:01:570:02:00

Minister David Cooper has bought an old farmhouse

0:02:000:02:02

on the south tip of Unst at Uyeasound for his retirement.

0:02:020:02:07

But before he moves in, he wants to carry out some refurbishments.

0:02:090:02:13

So this is an old house, which in the 1980s was hugely renovated.

0:02:140:02:20

What they couldn't do then was make the small windows of the house

0:02:200:02:26

any larger and when you're in the house,

0:02:260:02:29

you have to stand in the windows to enjoy this fabulous view.

0:02:290:02:34

So we're having this extension room built on the ground

0:02:340:02:40

where I've killed off the grass and it will have huge windows

0:02:400:02:47

and we'll be able to sit behind them and look out and enjoy the view.

0:02:470:02:52

Having moved from parish to parish throughout his career,

0:02:540:02:58

Minister David is looking forward to settling

0:02:580:03:01

in one place for the first time in his life.

0:03:010:03:04

Ministry has taken me all over the place

0:03:040:03:08

and this will be a final settling down.

0:03:080:03:12

The rugged beauty and isolation of Shetland

0:03:150:03:17

has always attracted outsiders.

0:03:170:03:20

23 years ago, Sarah McBurnie moved here from Bradford.

0:03:200:03:25

Hello, chickens!

0:03:250:03:27

CLUCKING

0:03:270:03:29

Everybody, out. Come on.

0:03:290:03:31

She makes a living growing vegetables in her polytunnel

0:03:310:03:34

for local businesses.

0:03:340:03:36

-Guess what?

-Apple mint.

-Yep.

0:03:370:03:40

Recently, she's been supplying dried apple mint to Mark

0:03:400:03:43

at the local distillery to flavour the gin.

0:03:430:03:46

Now, he's producing a new product with a more exotic ingredient

0:03:460:03:51

and he's asked Sarah to supply it for him.

0:03:510:03:54

It's a new one to me.

0:03:540:03:55

He's asked for seaweed!

0:03:550:03:57

Seaweed?!

0:03:590:04:02

Luckily, there's an abundant supply at her local beach.

0:04:020:04:06

But to make sure she harvests only the edible ones, she's asked

0:04:060:04:10

her friend and local seaweed aficionado Chris Dumont for help.

0:04:100:04:15

This is northern kelp.

0:04:150:04:18

This is the sea lettuce.

0:04:180:04:20

That's dulse, that's also edible.

0:04:200:04:23

That's sugar kelp. That's good eating.

0:04:260:04:29

Make a Korean style seaweed soup with sesame oil, ginger,

0:04:290:04:34

chilli, garlic and seaweed.

0:04:340:04:37

Boil it... No, simmer it for about 20 minutes and it's lovely.

0:04:370:04:41

That's his tea!

0:04:410:04:44

It's easy enough to dry as well to keep.

0:04:440:04:46

You can dry it on your washing line.

0:04:460:04:49

I don't think my other half would really appreciate it

0:04:490:04:51

if I offered him seaweed for tea!

0:04:510:04:53

After a good morning's foraging,

0:04:550:04:58

it's time to dry the seaweed out back home.

0:04:580:05:01

There's one particular type

0:05:010:05:03

that Mark at the distillery has requested.

0:05:030:05:06

This is the fresh bladderwrack and

0:05:060:05:08

I've washed it.

0:05:080:05:10

If you don't wash it and it's still got seawater on it,

0:05:100:05:13

then it won't dry out.

0:05:130:05:15

So I've rinsed it, dried it off and now I'm going to put

0:05:150:05:18

it in the oven on the lowest heat possible to dry it out very gently.

0:05:180:05:21

We don't want to cook it, we just want to dry it out.

0:05:210:05:25

Seaweed gin, I know, who'd have thought of it?!

0:05:270:05:30

Over at his manse on the neighbouring island of Yell,

0:05:340:05:38

Minister David Cooper is preparing for today's service.

0:05:380:05:41

But with such a panoramic vista from his study,

0:05:430:05:47

it's easy to get distracted.

0:05:470:05:48

Every window in Shetland has a pair of binoculars.

0:05:530:05:57

You don't need a parish pump for gossip,

0:05:570:06:01

you just need binoculars and you know who's in, who's out,

0:06:010:06:06

who's got the builder round, who's having their Rayburn serviced

0:06:060:06:10

and all the rest.

0:06:100:06:12

If I stand in the middle of the window

0:06:120:06:14

and look across to the house that

0:06:140:06:16

we've bought for our retirement in Unst,

0:06:160:06:19

I can see whether or not the builder's van is there

0:06:190:06:22

on this particular day

0:06:220:06:24

and guess what progress or not is being made.

0:06:240:06:29

The builders are taking advantage of good weather

0:06:320:06:35

to crack on with the new extension.

0:06:350:06:37

A hop across the bay to attend to his parish duties

0:06:400:06:43

offers the minister the ideal opportunity to drop in

0:06:430:06:46

and check on progress,

0:06:460:06:48

although the weather has turned.

0:06:480:06:50

-Hi, there. Hi, there.

-Hello.

0:06:510:06:54

It's a bit early for that yet.

0:06:540:06:57

Wow, it all goes up so fast once the foundations are in place.

0:06:580:07:02

This is Siberian larch, is that right?

0:07:030:07:06

Yeah.

0:07:060:07:08

Siberian larch, it doesn't need any treatment

0:07:080:07:12

once it's in place

0:07:120:07:14

and so many people here build timber houses clad with timber

0:07:140:07:21

and it's pretty high-maintenance for some of them.

0:07:210:07:24

Well, this is for an old man's house.

0:07:240:07:28

I'm not going to be painting all the time.

0:07:290:07:31

It'll look after itself.

0:07:310:07:33

After checking up on the builders,

0:07:370:07:39

it's time to catch up with his flock.

0:07:390:07:42

Today, Minister Cooper is visiting the Unst retirees

0:07:420:07:45

at the Nordalea daycare centre in Baltasound.

0:07:450:07:48

Let us build a house where love can dwell

0:07:500:07:54

and all can safely live

0:07:540:07:56

Built of hopes and dreams and visions

0:07:560:08:01

All are welcome

0:08:010:08:03

All are welcome in this place.

0:08:030:08:06

The ladies at the daycare centre like to keep busy with

0:08:080:08:10

handicrafts, but it's not idle pastime -

0:08:100:08:14

they have a fearsome reputation for winning

0:08:140:08:16

at the annual Unst Agricultural Show.

0:08:160:08:19

One of the amazing features of these older people is just how

0:08:190:08:22

competitive they are.

0:08:220:08:24

They thoroughly enjoy among themselves

0:08:240:08:26

a game of Scrabble, still.

0:08:260:08:29

And you can have four 90-year-olds sitting around having

0:08:290:08:32

a game of Scrabble.

0:08:320:08:34

But equally, in the community they're glad

0:08:340:08:37

to put something on display from their club.

0:08:370:08:42

This year, they'll be entering a Shetland croft house.

0:08:420:08:45

I was wondering, is this exhibit going to be a prize-winner

0:08:450:08:49

at the show this year?

0:08:490:08:51

-Yes.

-I hope so, yes.

-You hope so.

0:08:520:08:56

Their latest contribution to the show is the croft house,

0:08:560:09:00

with its stone and straw and everything else.

0:09:000:09:02

They've won prizes year after year after year.

0:09:040:09:08

The annual Unst Agricultural Show will be held in a few weeks' time.

0:09:110:09:16

Another islander with a rosette in his sights is Richard Spence,

0:09:160:09:20

who knows a thing or two about traditional crofts.

0:09:200:09:23

Richard is a keen breeder of Shetland sheep.

0:09:300:09:33

A category that will be fiercely contested.

0:09:370:09:39

Traditions in Unst run deep

0:10:070:10:09

and the agricultural show is no exception.

0:10:090:10:12

But showing the island's iconic mascot, the Shetland pony,

0:10:500:10:53

is not for Richard.

0:10:530:10:56

Luckily, there are plenty of others who have no such problems -

0:11:150:11:19

such as Frank Roberts, the island's horse whisperer.

0:11:190:11:23

At his pony stud farm in Clibberswick,

0:11:230:11:25

along with his wife Jem and their friend Pat,

0:11:250:11:28

he's getting eight-year-old stallion Flashback ready for the show.

0:11:280:11:32

You're liking that, aren't you?

0:11:320:11:34

This is the bit they don't like, getting the cold water on them.

0:11:340:11:37

This year's show will see the first public appearance

0:11:440:11:48

for Frank's young filly, Sula.

0:11:480:11:51

She too has a much-needed appointment with bucket and brush.

0:11:510:11:55

It's the big event of the year for the pony breeders.

0:11:550:11:58

The trouble with this kind of pony is...

0:11:580:12:00

-Too much white.

-..too much white.

0:12:000:12:03

-OK.

-Yeah.

0:12:030:12:05

Starting to look a bit cleaner.

0:12:050:12:07

Winning prizes at shows is important

0:12:070:12:10

if Frank is to keep up his reputation as a breeder.

0:12:100:12:13

Sula is the only entry this year, so all eyes will be on her.

0:12:150:12:18

You've done very well.

0:12:180:12:20

Very good. I'm proud of you.

0:12:200:12:22

Yeah, I'm proud of you.

0:12:220:12:24

Across on the other side of Unst is the home of Mother Mary,

0:12:290:12:34

the island's very own Eastern Orthodox nun.

0:12:340:12:38

-Hi, Andrew. How's it going?

-Hello, are you all right?

0:12:380:12:42

She moved here a few months ago from the neighbouring island of Fetlar

0:12:420:12:46

and rents this house from the church.

0:12:460:12:49

Up here, I just love it,

0:12:490:12:51

particularly because of its position.

0:12:510:12:53

It's on the edge of the community, so it's very quiet and peaceful.

0:12:530:12:57

It was a very simple croft house with a kitchen extension

0:12:590:13:04

and they built the existing roof over the old roof,

0:13:040:13:07

so it's actually got a double roof

0:13:070:13:10

which makes it really warm and cosy in the winter.

0:13:100:13:14

With the help of Andrew,

0:13:140:13:15

Mother Mary is also adapting the old animal barn.

0:13:150:13:19

This end of the barn attaches onto the old croft house.

0:13:190:13:24

So this is the old croft house wall

0:13:240:13:26

and I was very worried about all this staining here.

0:13:260:13:30

I thought maybe it was damp, but Andrew, the builder, says

0:13:300:13:34

that's a result from years and years and years of burning peat

0:13:340:13:39

and not to worry about it at all.

0:13:390:13:41

It's a nice bit of history, really,

0:13:410:13:44

of the peat fire that was burnt the other side.

0:13:440:13:47

Andrew, the builder, and I have discovered

0:13:490:13:52

we've got a stone fireplace - quite a big one.

0:13:520:13:56

It probably had a cooking range in it.

0:13:560:13:59

So what is the living room now was the kitchen area.

0:13:590:14:03

Well, we're going to see David, well, David's fireplace to be exact.

0:14:030:14:07

The renovation of Minister David Cooper's retirement home

0:14:090:14:12

is nearly complete.

0:14:120:14:14

It's the perfect place for Mother Mary to look for ideas.

0:14:140:14:17

-Hello.

-Hello. Welcome! Welcome, welcome! Come on in.

0:14:190:14:22

This is really good of you. I've come seeking inspiration.

0:14:220:14:26

Inspiration! Well, come in out of the cold, that's the first thing.

0:14:260:14:29

-Immediately...

-This is lovely!

-..you see what you're going to see.

0:14:290:14:33

-Wow!

-Yeah!

-Gosh!

0:14:330:14:35

Look at your lintel.

0:14:350:14:37

-It's enormous!

-That's a big old stone.

0:14:370:14:41

It certainly is.

0:14:410:14:43

So this stone, which is cold at the moment

0:14:430:14:46

because the fire's not been on for a very long,

0:14:460:14:49

it will gradually warm and retain that warmth.

0:14:490:14:53

So it'll heat the room overnight.

0:14:530:14:55

-Yes.

-Wonderful.

0:14:550:14:57

-It's not cold in the morning.

-Yes, lovely.

-Yeah.

0:14:570:15:00

But most of all, David's keen to show off his brand-new extension.

0:15:000:15:05

Oh, look at the view!

0:15:060:15:08

I hope the floor... Yes, the floor has just been oiled

0:15:080:15:10

-a couple of days ago.

-Oh, I see.

0:15:100:15:12

This was the original outside wall of the house.

0:15:120:15:17

We've had all of this wall revealed and it gives us

0:15:180:15:23

these lovely pieces of dressed stone around the door.

0:15:230:15:26

Here's extra light.

0:15:280:15:30

It'll make a good dance floor too.

0:15:300:15:32

-Oh, no, no!

-I expect some good parties, no?

0:15:320:15:34

There will be a piano and two comfortable chairs for the view.

0:15:340:15:39

-Here we'll sit and just gaze.

-Mm-hm.

0:15:390:15:42

-Spectacular panorama.

-Yes, it is.

0:15:420:15:45

It's given me the vision of what could be possible

0:15:470:15:51

and hearing that the stones can heat up

0:15:510:15:53

and that you can keep your house warm overnight

0:15:530:15:56

is a very attractive idea.

0:15:560:15:58

Other outsiders who've chosen to retire here are former

0:16:000:16:04

teachers from Nottingham Heather and Martin Gill,

0:16:040:16:08

who first holidayed here six years ago.

0:16:080:16:11

You do this with feathers normally, but if not, you use paper.

0:16:110:16:15

Daft, or what?!

0:16:150:16:16

But it wasn't just Unst's tranquillity

0:16:160:16:19

and rugged beauty that seduced them.

0:16:190:16:21

They're fascinated by its rich Norse history.

0:16:210:16:25

Dotted all over the island are the remains of Viking settlements.

0:16:250:16:29

Longhouses like these can be more difficult to spot.

0:16:290:16:33

-So here, this is the longhouse.

-It's here.

0:16:330:16:35

This is the living area here.

0:16:350:16:38

There's the walls.

0:16:380:16:39

-We came over here times many and didn't even notice it!

-No!

0:16:390:16:42

That's one that's never been actually excavated.

0:16:440:16:48

This is probably a staging post for raids on the UK mainland.

0:16:480:16:53

You never know.

0:16:540:16:57

Heather is a keen knitter and that archaeological heritage

0:16:570:17:01

has inspired her entry into this year's Unst Show -

0:17:010:17:05

with her own unique interpretation of a Viking raiding party.

0:17:050:17:10

My knitting is very amateurish compared to the tradition on Unst

0:17:100:17:16

because the tradition on Unst is to make what's called lace knitting -

0:17:160:17:19

which is in very, very fine wool,

0:17:190:17:23

one-ply wool, and they make shawls for weddings,

0:17:230:17:28

most of which they usually say will go through the wedding ring.

0:17:280:17:31

I can't compete. My knitting can't compete with that,

0:17:310:17:33

so I have to do quirky things like this!

0:17:330:17:37

And, of course, a knitted finger puppet raiding party

0:17:370:17:40

will need a longboat.

0:17:400:17:42

This is to have plants in it.

0:17:420:17:45

It was our windowsill but then, you see, it blew off in the wind.

0:17:450:17:49

So I thought, "Well, this is a boat, sort of."

0:17:490:17:51

So I'm going to convert it so it looks like the galleys.

0:17:510:17:54

So I'm going to make this in MDF

0:17:540:17:56

and that back end in MDF.

0:17:560:17:58

The back end's the tail,

0:17:580:18:00

so there's the dragon, here's the tail.

0:18:000:18:03

Then the side of it has got one, two, three, four, five,

0:18:030:18:07

six, seven, eight, nine shields.

0:18:070:18:10

Think what we might get up to if we weren't doing things like this!

0:18:100:18:14

Serious problems.

0:18:140:18:16

Yes.

0:18:160:18:19

-Keeps us off the streets.

-Yeah, I know, absolutely!

0:18:190:18:21

With a few days to go before the agricultural fair,

0:18:260:18:29

Richard Spence and his volunteers are busy erecting the show tent.

0:18:290:18:33

Inside the community hall, the island's matriarchs

0:18:340:18:37

are preparing the tables to display Unst's finest produce.

0:18:370:18:42

Up at the distillery, Sarah has an important delivery to make.

0:18:440:18:49

Mark!

0:18:490:18:50

-I've got the seaweed!

-Good, good.

0:18:500:18:53

How did it... Did it work fine?

0:18:530:18:54

Yeah, it did, actually. It was really good.

0:18:540:18:58

-It's dry, it's perfect.

-Yep, it's nice and brittle.

0:18:580:19:01

-Tasty.

-Yep, no, that's absolutely perfect.

0:19:040:19:08

I must admit, that's going to be an interesting taste.

0:19:080:19:11

I think it is, aye. I think it is.

0:19:110:19:14

Stuart, Mark's boss, can now mix together the pure alcohol

0:19:150:19:19

and water to begin the delicate process of creating the new gin.

0:19:190:19:24

The ingredients are added to a still, left to soak for 24 hours,

0:19:240:19:29

then heated to create the gin essence -

0:19:290:19:32

juniper berries, botanicals and the all-important new flavour.

0:19:320:19:37

I've got all the seaweed.

0:19:370:19:38

The essence will be mixed again with water and pure alcohol

0:19:380:19:42

and then bottled.

0:19:420:19:44

Only then will Stuart and Mark know if their seaweed gin is a success.

0:19:440:19:48

It's the morning of the 123rd Unst Agricultural Show

0:19:530:19:59

and Sarah is preparing to enter the best

0:19:590:20:01

that her polytunnel can produce.

0:20:010:20:04

This year, she's putting forward a rather unusual specimen.

0:20:050:20:09

This is actually a ginger plant.

0:20:090:20:12

Definitely a first for Unst Show.

0:20:120:20:15

It will be interesting to see what they make of it.

0:20:160:20:19

Also keen to get among the rosettes is Minister David Cooper.

0:20:190:20:24

It turns out growing prize-winning vegetables is in his genes.

0:20:240:20:28

One of my grandfathers years ago in County Durham grew leeks

0:20:300:20:36

and chrysanthemums for show.

0:20:360:20:39

Leeks as thick as your forearm.

0:20:390:20:43

He would think these were miserable!

0:20:430:20:46

They are not much thicker than my pen.

0:20:460:20:49

Well, it's all growing but it's not for showing.

0:20:490:20:52

Setting off from Clibberswick pony stud farm,

0:20:530:20:57

groomed and gleaming is novice filly Sula and her mum Sunset Lady,

0:20:570:21:02

who's come along to keep her company -

0:21:020:21:05

much to the excitement of an admiring colt.

0:21:060:21:08

BAAING

0:21:130:21:14

Up ahead, the showground is a buzz of trailers and animals.

0:21:140:21:18

The pens soon fill out with prize specimens from all over Unst

0:21:180:21:22

and the neighbouring islands.

0:21:220:21:23

MOOING

0:21:230:21:25

It's going to be a challenging day for Frank's young filly Sula,

0:21:250:21:28

who isn't used to this kind of noise.

0:21:280:21:31

So he's hoping that the presence of her mum, Sunset Lady,

0:21:310:21:35

will help calm her nerves.

0:21:350:21:37

She's never seen these many ponies before

0:21:390:21:41

and this much traffic before. Ah, there we go.

0:21:410:21:44

If Sula is to pick up a rosette today,

0:21:440:21:46

Frank will need all his experience to keep her calm and collected.

0:21:460:21:50

BAAING AND NEIGHING

0:21:500:21:53

After two weeks of stitching, sanding and painting,

0:21:590:22:02

Martin and Heather's Viking raiding party is ready to launch

0:22:020:22:07

itself on an unsuspecting public.

0:22:070:22:09

This is the most important person, Guizer Jarl.

0:22:110:22:14

There he is there, and he's in gold

0:22:140:22:16

and these are his children, actually, one, two, three.

0:22:160:22:20

There's another one there.

0:22:200:22:22

And then these are all the squad.

0:22:220:22:24

This is Unst, you see, the shape of Unst is on there, look.

0:22:240:22:29

So they've all got their hatchets.

0:22:290:22:30

700 years ago, those hatchets would have been used to attack

0:22:300:22:34

the croft houses of Unst, just like the one that's been

0:22:340:22:37

made by the ladies from Nordalea Daycare Centre.

0:22:370:22:41

I think it's brilliant, this one.

0:22:410:22:44

Is it actually made...? That's actually made of somebody's...

0:22:440:22:47

Somebody's made these from...

0:22:470:22:49

Do you know, it really is from little stones.

0:22:490:22:51

It's absolutely fabulous, look at that!

0:22:510:22:53

So the exhibits are in position and the judging can now get underway.

0:22:540:23:00

Over at the distillery,

0:23:040:23:06

it's the moment of truth for Stuart and Mark.

0:23:060:23:09

So this is it, sample number one.

0:23:090:23:13

Time to taste the new seaweed gin.

0:23:130:23:17

Wow!

0:23:200:23:22

Very much different from the apple mint.

0:23:220:23:25

The saltiness at the back!

0:23:250:23:27

I can picture being here on a glorious day like today...

0:23:270:23:31

Not a glorious day, I think.

0:23:310:23:33

I think a stormy day with the waves crashing on the shore, I don't know.

0:23:330:23:38

-Well, mate.

-Well done, pal.

-We did well.

-Yep.

-Cheers.

0:23:380:23:41

Back at the show,

0:23:440:23:46

the prizes are being handed out to the junior handlers.

0:23:460:23:49

APPLAUSE

0:23:490:23:51

And Richard Spencer's Shetland rams are being put

0:23:510:23:54

through their paces.

0:23:540:23:55

126...

0:23:550:23:58

However, as president of the Unst Show,

0:23:580:24:00

his main concern is what's going on in the skies above the ground.

0:24:000:24:05

One event that's sure to pull the punters in

0:24:140:24:17

is the hotly-contested Chicken Challenge Cup.

0:24:170:24:21

Ready, steady, go!

0:24:210:24:24

CLUCKING

0:24:240:24:26

Come on, you crazy bunch of chickens!

0:24:290:24:31

Get a move on!

0:24:350:24:37

Not a speed race, is it?

0:24:410:24:43

You don't need a stopwatch on this one, do you?

0:24:430:24:46

Run! Run! Run!

0:24:490:24:51

CHEERING

0:24:540:24:56

CHEERING

0:25:020:25:04

It's the one with no number!

0:25:070:25:10

With the racing chickens enjoying a well-earned rest,

0:25:110:25:15

in the hall the judges are awarding the prizes.

0:25:150:25:20

Could we give equal first for these two?

0:25:200:25:23

And this one a second.

0:25:230:25:24

The Viking raiding party and the croft house

0:25:290:25:32

are pitched head-to-head.

0:25:320:25:34

While outside, Sula is making her debut in the show ring.

0:25:370:25:43

NEIGHING

0:25:430:25:46

I was going to bring carrots but I'm afraid we ate most of them.

0:25:460:25:51

Back inside, the judges are particularly

0:25:510:25:54

impressed by a mysterious ginger plant -

0:25:540:25:57

something that's very difficult to grow here

0:25:570:25:59

on Britain's most northerly island.

0:25:590:26:02

It's very unusual, yes. Somebody's done a good job.

0:26:020:26:05

-Oh!

-Do I need my glasses on?

-Second place!

0:26:110:26:13

I got second place for my potatoes.

0:26:130:26:16

What does that say?

0:26:160:26:17

Sarah McBurnie!

0:26:170:26:19

Oh, another prize!

0:26:190:26:21

Sarah McBurnie, hooray!

0:26:210:26:22

And it seems the retired ladies

0:26:220:26:24

of the Nordalea Daycare Centre have indeed triumphed again

0:26:240:26:28

with their croft house.

0:26:280:26:29

But this year they have to share a joint first prize

0:26:310:26:34

with Martin and Heather's knitted Viking raiding party.

0:26:340:26:38

All right, lovely.

0:26:380:26:40

-Oh, now look at that! Well done.

-Thank you.

0:26:400:26:44

Not bad for two science teachers!

0:26:440:26:48

NEIGHING

0:26:480:26:50

Off you go, thank you.

0:26:530:26:55

Frank has been bringing ponies to the Unst Show for 24 years.

0:26:570:27:02

For him, it's vital that Sula wins him a prize today

0:27:020:27:06

to maintain his reputation.

0:27:060:27:09

NEIGHING

0:27:140:27:19

What are you thinking of this? What are you thinking of this?

0:27:190:27:23

Yeah, it's all new to you.

0:27:230:27:27

Yeah, it's all new to you.

0:27:270:27:31

Yeah.

0:27:310:27:33

Well done.

0:27:360:27:37

Thank you very much. Thank you.

0:27:370:27:41

You see that? Do you see that?

0:27:490:27:52

Do you see that?

0:27:540:27:56

Cheesy grin.

0:27:560:27:59

Well done to this little lass, here.

0:27:590:28:02

She's the one doing all the work.

0:28:020:28:04

In the days to come...

0:28:090:28:11

50 for her, then...

0:28:110:28:13

..Frank and Jem travel to Lerwick to the Shetland pony auction.

0:28:130:28:18

I can switch off but Frank's

0:28:180:28:19

a completely different kettle of fish.

0:28:190:28:22

He finds it very difficult.

0:28:220:28:23

He is more emotionally attached.

0:28:230:28:25

Sula, their foal, is up for sale.

0:28:250:28:28

If you're going to breed ponies, you've got to let them go as well.

0:28:280:28:31

And Mother Mary gets out the power tools

0:28:310:28:34

to create a new space to welcome visitors.

0:28:340:28:37

If I have a chapel here in the hermitage, it's there ready

0:28:370:28:41

and it's a witness, not only to orthodoxy, but to Christian prayer.

0:28:410:28:46

I'm very familiar with a hammer drill.
