At just two miles long and a mile wide, Sark is the smallest of the

0:00:020:00:07

four main Channel Islands.

0:00:070:00:08

It's only 80 miles from the UK mainland and

0:00:110:00:14

the Queen is their Head of State but it has its own government and laws.

0:00:140:00:19

It's been this way for almost 500 years.

0:00:190:00:22

At the centre of the community are Sark's two churches,

0:00:250:00:28

the Methodist chapel, run by Karen Le Mouton...

0:00:280:00:32

Let us pray together. God and our salvation...

0:00:320:00:37

..and the Anglican St Peter's, still on the search for a permanent vicar

0:00:380:00:42

but using locums in the meantime.

0:00:420:00:44

Sark's 600 inhabitants pay no income tax - so that means

0:00:470:00:52

the island must fund and organise many of its services.

0:00:520:00:56

We have to put ourselves forward

0:00:560:00:57

and that is what life on Sark is all about, putting ourselves forward.

0:00:570:01:01

The lack of state support fosters a culture of volunteering.

0:01:020:01:06

It's one of the nice things about living on Sark actually, isn't it?

0:01:070:01:11

You make a little cry for help and everybody turns up.

0:01:110:01:14

On Sark, there's almost nothing a volunteer won't do.

0:01:160:01:19

-Oh, my goodness!

-That's great!

0:01:190:01:21

Are we done?

0:01:230:01:24

It's April, and across Sark, last-minute preparations are being

0:02:030:02:07

made for what all on the island hope will be a prosperous tourist season.

0:02:070:02:11

Almost all trades on Sark rely on this industry,

0:02:150:02:20

so for shopkeepers like Caroline Langford

0:02:200:02:23

at the Post Office, springtime is a defining moment in the calendar.

0:02:230:02:27

We always love to see the visitors come back - it can be a long,

0:02:290:02:32

cold winter sometimes,

0:02:320:02:34

and new faces means that the tills are ringing and we're all happy!

0:02:340:02:39

Business is picking up for workers,

0:02:420:02:46

but on a small island like Sark

0:02:460:02:49

many are also involved in how the place is run.

0:02:490:02:51

Like Jeremy Le Trobe-Bateman -

0:02:540:02:56

on the one hand he's the crane operator at the harbour...

0:02:560:03:00

..and on the other he's the island's magistrate,

0:03:020:03:04

or as they say on Sark, the Seneschal.

0:03:040:03:07

And so we move swiftly on to agenda item number one.

0:03:090:03:13

Sark being independent to a large degree, of course that means

0:03:140:03:20

if you're independent you have to do things for yourself, so we

0:03:200:03:24

have our own parliament which meets four times a year in this building.

0:03:240:03:29

Volunteers, nobody is paid for that.

0:03:290:03:32

You have to run your own affairs,

0:03:320:03:34

you have to run your own school, you have to run your own services.

0:03:340:03:38

And that's a real plus

0:03:380:03:40

because that makes the community come together.

0:03:400:03:43

The only things are going to get done

0:03:430:03:45

is if people on the island do it.

0:03:450:03:47

The Do It Yourself attitude on Sark

0:03:490:03:53

also extends to the emergency services

0:03:530:03:56

In charge of 18 volunteer fire fighters is

0:03:560:04:00

farmer and leader of the Church choir, Kevin Adams.

0:04:000:04:03

We're doing it for, really, for the love of Sark,

0:04:050:04:08

that's what it's... We're helping our fellow Sarkees

0:04:080:04:11

and visitors to the island.

0:04:110:04:13

Be it be fires, cliff rescues, ambulance assist.

0:04:130:04:18

Whatever you like, if there isn't a job for somebody else to do,

0:04:180:04:21

we get it!

0:04:210:04:22

Mini's day job is running the Harbour Cafe, but she's been

0:04:240:04:28

a voluntary fire-fighter since she moved to Sark nine years ago.

0:04:280:04:32

What's the point of being here and staying at home?

0:04:340:04:38

You get involved in the community, get stuck in and that's how you

0:04:380:04:41

get to know people and feel proud to be part of this beautiful island.

0:04:410:04:46

You know, we can all give something, whether it's your knowledge

0:04:460:04:49

of the island or your fitness or your strength,

0:04:490:04:52

there's something we can all give and together we make an excellent team.

0:04:520:04:56

We've never been short of people applying, so last time

0:04:560:05:01

we had 11 people applying for 4 vacancies - it was great!

0:05:010:05:05

-Is it quite a rigorous application process?

-No!

0:05:050:05:08

This is a big weekend for Kevin and his crew, with visiting instructors

0:05:150:05:19

from the mainland here to update training and hone techniques.

0:05:190:05:23

The leader is Steve Speck.

0:05:240:05:26

Fair play to them, they're what this island's got

0:05:280:05:32

as their emergency service, really, there's nothing else.

0:05:320:05:35

It'll take Guernsey an hour and a half to get here, so by then

0:05:370:05:41

most emergency situations will have been resolved one way or another.

0:05:410:05:45

Sark's Fire Brigade on average deal with one fire a year.

0:05:460:05:51

Today, the team are going to learn about fuel fires.

0:05:510:05:53

STEVE: Never put it on until you've got foam

0:05:530:05:56

-and keep it on as long as you've got foam.

-It's moving through!

0:05:560:05:59

Foam is a more efficient extinguisher

0:06:030:06:05

than water on these fires.

0:06:050:06:07

and with tractors and fuel depots on Sark,

0:06:070:06:10

this new skill will provide a more effective response.

0:06:100:06:14

You want to hit it straight on the top! Rain it down on top.

0:06:140:06:16

I'm pleasantly surprised.

0:06:230:06:25

They've picked everything up quite quickly

0:06:280:06:30

and they want to learn which is a good thing.

0:06:300:06:33

Across the island, spring has sprung,

0:06:430:06:46

and Sark's lack of cultivation leads to a profusion of wild flowers.

0:06:460:06:51

To make the most of this, volunteers step forward to give visitors

0:06:570:07:01

walking tours across the island.

0:07:010:07:03

These bluebells are the English bluebell.

0:07:070:07:10

It looks like a shy English maiden with her head turned down.

0:07:100:07:14

Springtime is just lovely. When you arrive at the island

0:07:160:07:19

and you go up Harbour Hill and it's just a mass of bluebells

0:07:190:07:22

and wild garlic. You know, going along the hedgerows you see

0:07:220:07:27

so many beautiful flowers, it's just a real joy.

0:07:270:07:29

The guide today is Susan Synott - a published author

0:07:340:07:37

on the subject of wild flowers.

0:07:370:07:39

Every household I think in Sark produces sloe gin,

0:07:400:07:44

it's quite an occupation in the winter.

0:07:440:07:47

It helps put Sark on the map and it also brings a certain amount

0:07:480:07:52

of tourists here earlier in the season, particularly

0:07:520:07:55

after Easter - you can get quite a lull before the main season starts.

0:07:550:07:59

Sark's emergency services rely on charitable donations,

0:08:020:08:07

and teaching assistant and part-time photographer Lydia Bourne has

0:08:070:08:10

an idea to raise money for them, but it's not for the shy.

0:08:100:08:14

I saw the film of Calendar Girls a few years ago

0:08:170:08:20

and I thought I'd love to do that here

0:08:200:08:23

and I've sent out a letter to all the people

0:08:230:08:26

who volunteer for the services

0:08:260:08:27

and I'm waiting for them to attend a meeting.

0:08:270:08:31

I'm really hoping this is going to be received well

0:08:310:08:35

because I'd like to do a lot of different kinds of photographs

0:08:350:08:38

with all the props, like the fire tender. And all the different

0:08:380:08:41

Sark things, like bicycles and things like that, and tractors.

0:08:410:08:45

So I'd be delighted if we have a big turnout, but I'm...I'm apprehensive.

0:08:450:08:51

This evening's meeting at the Island Hall will be the first time

0:08:530:08:56

that Lydia and her photography expert friend, Sue Daly, have

0:08:560:09:00

presented their idea to the emergency workers on Sark.

0:09:000:09:04

We could even have a tractor. Cos that's so Sark.

0:09:040:09:08

7pm, and there's a good turnout for the meeting,

0:09:080:09:13

though some do appear a little apprehensive.

0:09:140:09:17

Thank you for coming, cos this is kind of a bit of a stab in the dark.

0:09:190:09:23

It's brilliant that you all want to be involved and it's not too scary.

0:09:230:09:27

What's the money actually being raised for?

0:09:270:09:29

There's half going to our local emergency services,

0:09:290:09:32

and half going to the original benefactors of this one,

0:09:320:09:36

Lymphoma and Leukaemia Research, cancer research.

0:09:360:09:41

One thing we'd like if possible is to have something in the scene

0:09:420:09:46

that shows that you're in the emergency services!

0:09:460:09:49

Kevin, do you think...

0:09:490:09:51

Speedos?

0:09:550:09:56

With his helmet on?

0:09:560:09:58

-And Mini, we do need some big cupcakes!

-Not that big!

0:09:580:10:01

Sam's in, Lucy's in, Mini's in,

0:10:040:10:06

no John, so Ellie's in - that's brilliant.

0:10:060:10:09

-More people came than I thought.

-Yes.

0:10:100:10:12

I thought maybe we'd get about six people.

0:10:120:10:14

-I was delighted...

-And I was worried which six they might be as well.

0:10:140:10:17

THEY LAUGH

0:10:170:10:19

Right. That's fantastic.

0:10:190:10:23

Thank you, everybody!

0:10:240:10:26

Late April, and Sark finds itself vicarless.

0:10:310:10:35

Karen Le Mouton, the lay preacher at the Methodist Chapel,

0:10:350:10:39

is away on a well-earned holiday,

0:10:390:10:41

and currently there's no part-time locum vicar

0:10:410:10:44

stepping in to cover the vacancy at the Anglican St Peter's church.

0:10:440:10:48

But the volunteer culture continues

0:10:500:10:52

as ever-resourceful Sark has a fallback for these times,

0:10:520:10:55

in the shape of retired nurse and lay reader, Terry Archer.

0:10:550:11:00

Good morning. We begin our service this morning

0:11:020:11:05

with hymn number 470, Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven.

0:11:050:11:11

CONGREGATION SING HYMN

0:11:110:11:13

Lay readers are members of the congregation

0:11:180:11:20

authorised to lead services,

0:11:200:11:23

but that's the limit of what they can do

0:11:230:11:26

since they're not ordained.

0:11:260:11:27

# Praise him, praise him

0:11:270:11:29

# Praise him, praise him

0:11:290:11:32

# Glorious in our faithfulness. #

0:11:320:11:38

A very warm welcome to our service of matins this morning.

0:11:380:11:43

Special welcome if you're visitors,

0:11:430:11:45

it's lovely to see old friends returning and to welcome new ones.

0:11:450:11:51

7.30 Tuesday is the prayer group at Hazel's house.

0:11:510:11:55

If anyone would like supper, please let her know and be there at 6.30.

0:11:550:12:00

Without a stand-in lay reader, services would grind to a halt,

0:12:030:12:08

so parishioners like Puffin Taylour are grateful

0:12:080:12:11

for Terry's generous community spirit.

0:12:110:12:13

She knows people and she knows the sort of hymns we like.

0:12:130:12:16

It's a family feel at the service.

0:12:180:12:21

The search for a permanent vicar willing to live in the vicarage

0:12:230:12:26

without a wage continues.

0:12:260:12:29

We need someone resident on the island who will get to know people

0:12:290:12:35

and will build up good relationships with everyone.

0:12:350:12:39

Someone, I'm sure, will feel a call and a vocation,

0:12:440:12:49

whatever you like to call it, to come to Sark.

0:12:490:12:53

It's a wonderful, wonderful community.

0:12:530:12:55

Today, fisherman, Bas Adams, is hurtling in the opposite direction

0:13:040:13:07

to the fishing harbour.

0:13:070:13:09

Now, well, this is collecting jumble and here's the commander in chief.

0:13:130:13:18

-Hey, Bas.

-All right, Darren?

-I'm all right, how are you?

0:13:180:13:21

Shopping options on Sark are limited to say the least.

0:13:210:13:25

That makes the jumble sale a way of life.

0:13:250:13:28

The jumble sale is great fun, really like a recycling place,

0:13:300:13:34

because we have them regularly at the Island hall.

0:13:340:13:37

It's a great way of raising money

0:13:370:13:39

for the charity as well, various charities.

0:13:390:13:41

Today's jumble sale is in aid of the island's healthcare,

0:13:440:13:48

since there's no National Health Service on Sark.

0:13:480:13:51

And at the island hall,

0:13:510:13:53

a team of volunteers are busy displaying today's stock,

0:13:530:13:56

under direction from Sark's jumble sale maestro

0:13:560:13:59

and daughter of Bas, Zoe Adams.

0:13:590:14:02

We've got home-made cakes, which is always there

0:14:020:14:05

and Elsie always looks after that.

0:14:050:14:06

And then we've got Mrs Nightingale on the toys.

0:14:060:14:09

We've got Mrs Cocksedge doing the tombola,

0:14:090:14:11

she's the tombola queen of Sark.

0:14:110:14:13

And then we've got ladies' clothing,

0:14:130:14:15

men's clothing, we've got bric-a-brac which is always very extensive,

0:14:150:14:19

the raffle by the door so we knobble them as soon as they come in.

0:14:190:14:22

And then we've got books in the middle.

0:14:220:14:24

It's, honestly, it's like...

0:14:240:14:26

What was that programme, Are You Being Served? It's just like that.

0:14:260:14:29

Is that Captain Peacock?

0:14:290:14:31

SHE LAUGHS

0:14:310:14:33

Zoe loves doing things like that, she's a good organiser.

0:14:390:14:43

Sometimes she gets a bit fed up when things don't go right,

0:14:430:14:46

and she says "I won't do it again," but she still does.

0:14:460:14:50

I think on the whole,

0:14:550:14:56

people are very fussy about what they send, you know?

0:14:560:14:59

It's mostly all good stuff you get.

0:14:590:15:03

I've got one jumper which I've had for years, my favourite one,

0:15:030:15:07

that came from the jumble sale, for 30p.

0:15:070:15:09

I know exactly who owned it before.

0:15:090:15:12

I saw him one day and I said, "Do you like my new jumper?"

0:15:120:15:15

He just laughed, you know.

0:15:150:15:17

As Bas heads off to collect more jumble,

0:15:210:15:24

across the island, in a secluded and discreet corner of Sark,

0:15:240:15:28

Lydia and Sue are getting ready for a photo shoot

0:15:280:15:30

for their charity calendar.

0:15:300:15:33

Their willing victims today

0:15:390:15:40

are fire service volunteers Gail, Pippa and Mini.

0:15:400:15:44

-Do you want me to grab this end?

-If you can.

0:15:440:15:47

-Pass it's over.

-I'll try and pretend I'm macho.

0:15:470:15:50

It is rather heavy.

0:15:500:15:52

Gosh, imagine this with a person on. Can you manage?

0:15:520:15:55

We thought this was the best place ever.

0:15:550:15:57

At an undisclosed location.

0:15:570:16:00

Yes, it is!

0:16:000:16:02

Whatever you want to do, really.

0:16:020:16:03

The first job is to work out the strategic placement of the props.

0:16:030:16:07

Are you both going to wear the ropes? Is there two ropes?

0:16:070:16:10

There needs to be a bit...

0:16:100:16:11

Girls to the rescue, basically. Cliff rescue.

0:16:110:16:14

We don't know what they're rescuing. But, you know.

0:16:140:16:16

That can be part of the fantasy!

0:16:160:16:18

See if the ropes will cover enough. Cos I'd quite like it here.

0:16:180:16:21

-That's all right.

-Perfect!

-With that...

0:16:210:16:23

That's absolutely brilliant!

0:16:230:16:25

They're going to be three in a row here with the spinal board,

0:16:250:16:28

the lighthouse in the background,

0:16:280:16:30

and the wellies poking out the bottom.

0:16:300:16:32

It's a whole different side to Sark!

0:16:320:16:35

Oh, we're going to have all that...

0:16:350:16:37

-No, it's all right.

-We'll have to hold it.

0:16:370:16:39

It's quite nice to have that plain.

0:16:390:16:41

We can always take it out.

0:16:410:16:43

Right, girls. Actually, yeah, Min,

0:16:430:16:46

just move that rope more over your... There you go.

0:16:460:16:50

That's it, that's it! That's better!

0:16:510:16:54

So we can see the emblem.

0:16:540:16:56

We really want the shot to show it's definitely Sark, so we're trying to

0:16:560:16:59

get something that's essentially Sark in every shot.

0:16:590:17:02

And here we've got the lovely lighthouse and the sea as well.

0:17:020:17:06

Smile, ladies!

0:17:060:17:09

Discussions over, it's time to remove clothing and get the shot.

0:17:130:17:18

I can come and tweak ropes if you want.

0:17:180:17:21

Don't worry, you're not going to see them

0:17:210:17:23

cos you'll be behind the thing, won't you?

0:17:230:17:25

Luckily, Sark lighthouse is un-manned these days.

0:17:250:17:30

It is a family calendar!

0:17:300:17:32

THEY LAUGH

0:17:320:17:34

CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS

0:17:340:17:38

-It looks fantastic.

-That was a great photo!

-Fabulous.

0:17:380:17:41

Over at the Island Hall, and at 1.55pm on a Saturday afternoon,

0:17:430:17:46

Sark's bargain hunting recyclers are assembling.

0:17:460:17:50

Right, just go and stand over there

0:17:500:17:52

cos you'll get run over in the stampede.

0:17:520:17:53

Hello!

0:17:550:17:56

There's a jumble sale every couple of weeks on Sark,

0:18:060:18:09

and almost everything's on sale for 30p.

0:18:090:18:13

I just don't think I'm going to get into it somehow.

0:18:150:18:19

Even slung across the shoulders it's not quite going to work,

0:18:190:18:22

which is a shame!

0:18:220:18:24

Oh, and that was the one you wanted.

0:18:240:18:26

With no clothes shops on the island,

0:18:260:18:29

one particular stall works at fever pitch.

0:18:290:18:32

Ladies' fashion is the most lucrative department in the room.

0:18:320:18:35

Where people other places sort of go, "I'm wearing all designer labels",

0:18:350:18:39

over here it's a pride thing.

0:18:390:18:41

This was really a bargain,

0:18:410:18:43

this was a bargain, and, you know, people just love it!

0:18:430:18:46

Can't beat a bargain!

0:18:460:18:48

-Ta-dah!

-Oh, you're sorted!

0:18:490:18:51

Sorted, I'm sorted!

0:18:510:18:53

Take that out.

0:19:010:19:06

It's going very well - look at the amount of people!

0:19:060:19:08

And I think they're all spending, so that's good.

0:19:110:19:13

Lot's of money.

0:19:130:19:15

You're all very happy, aren't you, ladies?

0:19:150:19:19

Many on Sark are busy doing their bit this weekend.

0:19:250:19:29

With such steep cliffs, landslides are a common occurrence,

0:19:290:19:33

and a recent one has wiped out access to an iconic beach

0:19:330:19:36

on the island, Grand Greve.

0:19:360:19:38

It's THE popular beach.

0:19:420:19:44

This is your classic family beach in Sark...

0:19:440:19:46

Make sandcastles, make damns...

0:19:460:19:49

Just too frustrating not being able to use this beach.

0:19:490:19:53

The task today - led by magistrate/crane operator Jeremy -

0:19:550:19:59

is to cut a new path to connect up with steps down to the beach.

0:19:590:20:04

Time to start reclaiming what's rightfully ours!

0:20:040:20:07

The maintenance of the roads and paths on Sark

0:20:070:20:09

is usually paid for with the island's coffers.

0:20:090:20:13

I'll have to do a nice sideslip here, I think.

0:20:130:20:16

But for those paths off the beaten track,

0:20:160:20:18

it falls to the islanders themselves.

0:20:180:20:21

It's me and my volunteers. God bless'em! Yeah.

0:20:230:20:26

It's one of the nice things about living on Sark, actually.

0:20:260:20:30

You make a little cry for help and everybody turns up!

0:20:300:20:34

Yeah, it's wonderful.

0:20:340:20:36

The dog can see the rabbit now.

0:20:390:20:41

It's not just the young lads.

0:20:460:20:49

There's Sue up there, just come from her tea garden.

0:20:490:20:52

So it's certain a good cross section of the community here...

0:20:520:20:55

giving it a burst.

0:20:550:20:57

Well, Jeremy, who is pretty good at organising these things,

0:21:000:21:03

just put a notice up in the entrance to the gallery,

0:21:030:21:06

on the notice board, asking for volunteers.

0:21:060:21:09

As I really like using this beach, it seemed like a good idea.

0:21:090:21:13

We've joined up with the other path!

0:21:180:21:20

You just feel... Yep, if we use them, we've got to help ourselves.

0:21:250:21:29

JEREMY: Mind your nose, doggy!

0:21:320:21:34

I think in other places,

0:21:360:21:37

their municipal council would be doing this!

0:21:370:21:40

There we go. On the beach again.

0:21:430:21:47

How nice is that?

0:21:470:21:49

I'll have to have a bath when I get home,

0:21:560:21:58

and it's not even the end of the month yet!

0:21:580:22:00

On a cold and windy day, Lydia and Sue are getting in position

0:22:070:22:10

for their last calendar photo shoot.

0:22:100:22:13

We are doing men and bikes today,

0:22:140:22:16

cos bikes are part of living on Sark.

0:22:160:22:19

Everybody has a bike, so we thought we had to the bicycles in.

0:22:190:22:23

We've come to The Coupee because it's just a classic picture.

0:22:230:22:27

Everybody who's been here, knows where The Coupee is.

0:22:270:22:29

Here they come.

0:22:290:22:31

Willing to go the extra mile today are Kevin, his brother Simon

0:22:310:22:36

and Paul Williams.

0:22:360:22:38

Paul...that's not going to cover you, is it?

0:22:400:22:43

If we bring the rope forward and hang it over the front.

0:22:430:22:48

Oh, that's going to work.

0:22:520:22:55

Like that.

0:22:550:22:56

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:22:560:22:58

I think that's going to look great.

0:22:580:23:00

Such good sports, these guys, for doing this.

0:23:050:23:08

This is the time that the pagers go off.

0:23:110:23:14

Sorry, sorry, boys!

0:23:150:23:17

All we can do is apologise.

0:23:170:23:19

Now, Paul, you need to... That's it. There. That's it.

0:23:220:23:26

We were a bit reserved on the first go round,

0:23:270:23:30

but now we've done two or three, we've got the hang of it.

0:23:300:23:33

It was more shocking for the visitors coming past

0:23:380:23:41

and thinking, "What the heck is happening?!"

0:23:410:23:44

I can see. There, that's better. There.

0:23:440:23:46

-Yeah.

-Big, cheesy laughs and smiles.

0:23:460:23:51

Yay!

0:23:510:23:53

Think of the beer after. I'll go and buy you a drink now.

0:23:530:23:56

-I think they need brandy!

-Hot chocolate!

0:23:560:23:59

That's great!

0:24:020:24:04

Are we done?

0:24:050:24:07

Brilliant!

0:24:080:24:10

You can put your clothes back on now.

0:24:100:24:13

Loved every minute.

0:24:130:24:15

It'll be something for the memoirs.

0:24:170:24:19

We'll look back on today and think, "Never again."

0:24:190:24:22

The recent fundraising and volunteering have paid dividends.

0:24:260:24:31

The path down to Grand Greve beach is now open again.

0:24:310:24:35

Zoe's jumble sale raised over £1,000 for the island's healthcare.

0:24:380:24:42

And tonight is the launch of the much anticipated calendar.

0:24:420:24:47

Where are the calendars?

0:24:490:24:51

-Hidden.

-They're undercover.

-They're under here.

0:24:510:24:54

They're under there. Has anybody seen them yet?

0:24:540:24:57

-No.

-So none of them have seen anything, have they?

0:24:570:25:00

-I'm a bit nervous.

-Hmm. Yeah.

0:25:000:25:02

If they don't like them,

0:25:020:25:04

there'll be a lot of people not speaking to us.

0:25:040:25:06

If they don't like them, it'll be terrible

0:25:060:25:08

if our houses caught fire, they might not come!

0:25:080:25:11

Granted a private viewing

0:25:130:25:15

before the members of the public are allowed in,

0:25:150:25:18

are those who featured in the photos.

0:25:180:25:20

There's a palpable sense of tension in the room,

0:25:200:25:24

and a reluctance to sit in the front row.

0:25:240:25:27

OK, we'd like to say a huge, huge thank you

0:25:290:25:32

to all the generous people in this room

0:25:320:25:35

who have starred in our calendar and I'm sure you're going to like it!

0:25:350:25:39

LAUGHTER

0:25:390:25:41

If you don't, it's tough!

0:25:410:25:44

So, now for the pictures.

0:25:440:25:45

So, the first one is Mr January.

0:25:470:25:51

LAUGHTER

0:25:510:25:53

Next is Pippa, Gail and Mini.

0:25:560:26:00

Ooh!

0:26:000:26:02

Look at the boobs on that!

0:26:100:26:12

You might need to have a quick drink before you see the next one.

0:26:120:26:16

Paul and Simon and Kevin.

0:26:160:26:19

-Oh, yes!

-Are you ready?

0:26:190:26:22

Oh, yes!

0:26:220:26:24

"Narrow Escape", this is called.

0:26:240:26:27

LAUGHTER

0:26:270:26:28

No?!

0:26:280:26:29

That's brilliant.

0:26:310:26:33

-Well done, you two.

-Well done!

0:26:330:26:34

They come with envelopes.

0:26:400:26:42

With printing costs already covered,

0:26:420:26:45

all money taken tonight is clear profit,

0:26:450:26:48

and, in just one hour, Lydia and Sue

0:26:480:26:51

sell over 170 calendars at £10 each.

0:26:510:26:55

From here on in, it'll be on sale in shops across Sark.

0:26:560:27:00

Those involved in the calendar -

0:27:040:27:06

the clothed and the not clothed alike -

0:27:060:27:08

can bask in a feeling of accomplishment.

0:27:080:27:10

We're always game for a laugh, really, I think.

0:27:110:27:14

It's good fun, for a great cause, as well.

0:27:140:27:17

I don't know if it makes us famous or infamous, I don't know.

0:27:170:27:21

-That's your birthday month.

-I know!

0:27:210:27:22

Pictures look amazing,

0:27:240:27:26

if not slightly disturbing for some of us.

0:27:260:27:28

And you can see that we obviously don't have any fitness regime

0:27:280:27:32

within our emergency services.

0:27:320:27:34

-Well done!

-Thank you! Oh, I got a kiss form a fireman.

0:27:380:27:40

-Well done.

-Thank you!

0:27:400:27:42

Didn't they do well?

0:27:420:27:44

In the days to come...

0:27:460:27:47

..Dave Scott the shepherd branches out...

0:27:490:27:52

They're getting quite tame now, anyway.

0:27:540:27:57

Ay-up, piggos.

0:27:570:27:59

..an art project highlighting the unique natural history

0:27:590:28:03

of the island shows just how vulnerable it is...

0:28:030:28:06

The whole point of this is to make people think about

0:28:060:28:10

how special Sark is and hopefully to protect it for the future.

0:28:100:28:15

..and Methodist lay preacher, Karen Le Mouton, learns whether

0:28:150:28:19

her pre-ordination training will mean she has to leave Sark.

0:28:190:28:24

Well, I'm just trusting God and trusting the people

0:28:240:28:27

involved that it's all done very prayerfully

0:28:270:28:29

and that the right decision will be made.
