So much expectation on the slender shoulders of Jessica Ennis. The

:00:13.:00:22.

Suez I walked out in the stadium, the crowd was so loud, it gave me

:00:22.:00:32.
:00:32.:00:34.

goose bumps. Jessica Ennis, oh my goodness! I am glad I have got the

:00:34.:00:37.

goods got under my belt but there is a lot of work to be done

:00:37.:00:47.
:00:47.:00:49.

tomorrow. 6.428, the moment is getting closer.

:00:49.:00:52.

The defining moment of her life. Jessica Ennis is just 800 metres

:00:53.:01:02.
:01:03.:01:10.

away from Olympic gold. This is the Jessica Ennis has been the poster

:01:10.:01:13.

girl for the London Olympics. She missed the last Games because of

:01:13.:01:22.

injury and since then has won and lost world titles. So for Jess and

:01:22.:01:24.

coach Toni Minichiello this season coach Toni Minichiello this season

:01:24.:01:34.
:01:34.:01:38.

was about getting it right when it matters most. Isn't it just the

:01:38.:01:42.

thing come within sport if you coach people and the highlight of

:01:42.:01:52.

the session is I hope they are sick! New kind of feel, yes, I have

:01:52.:01:55.

trained you! Olympic training starts close to home. Coach Toni

:01:55.:01:58.

Minichiello has guided Jess since her talent was spotted at a summer

:01:58.:02:04.

training camp when she was just 11- years-old. It doesn't feel any

:02:04.:02:09.

different to any other day. The closer we will get, it will feel

:02:09.:02:14.

more important. We have started her harder than we have in the past,

:02:14.:02:19.

but I think that is the natural progression. You need a group

:02:19.:02:24.

environment. Mainly for the banter more than anything. Somebody to

:02:24.:02:28.

look at when you are not feeling as good as you would like. It makes it

:02:28.:02:33.

a lot easier when there is a few of you going through the pain and not

:02:33.:02:39.

just yourself. We kind of like help each other on, and you can measure

:02:39.:02:43.

yourself against each other and judge where you are. When you are

:02:43.:02:51.

running, it is a big group of you so it is definitely easier. When

:02:51.:02:58.

they do sessions like this, there is also a mental element. I believe

:02:58.:03:02.

there was a mental element, but psychologically, if I can get

:03:02.:03:08.

through this, there is not much I can't do. If I can just go through

:03:08.:03:13.

this session, I can achieve whatever I need to achieve. The do

:03:13.:03:18.

get used to it and you look forward to it in a weird kind of funny way.

:03:18.:03:22.

You enjoy the pain of it. You feel better ones to have done it,

:03:22.:03:32.
:03:32.:03:36.

obviously. It is over, well done. Let's go for a walk, guys. It is

:03:36.:03:42.

tiring, but the first session is done now so I am easing my way back

:03:42.:03:48.

into it. The cost the Olympics are so special, people overdo it and

:03:48.:03:52.

they get hurt so I am making a conscious effort that we keep these

:03:52.:03:57.

things in perspective. It is a long way off at the moment. It is the

:03:58.:04:01.

beginning of the winter so I have a lot of hard work to do but it is

:04:01.:04:11.

definitely getting closer. Seeing him sat there with his laptop open

:04:11.:04:18.

doing some work, that never, ever, ever happens. We will arrange to

:04:18.:04:28.

meet and we will say 9:30am. To her, that means she turns up at five to

:04:28.:04:36.

nine. Just running over hurdles, getting used to drilling work. We

:04:36.:04:41.

are doing some warm up work here and then we will drift into the

:04:41.:04:47.

slightly larger hurdles. Keep your trailing leg tie it all the way

:04:47.:04:50.

through. Now there is a diminishing return on how much better she can

:04:50.:04:54.

get so you are trying to find very small margins of consistency of

:04:54.:05:04.
:05:04.:05:07.

performance. You are talking about hundredths. Keep it bent. You know

:05:07.:05:17.
:05:17.:05:18.

as your leading arm comes in like this, it doesn't push.

:05:18.:05:25.

definitely felt like my foot was up. Yes, but the legs were too lengthy

:05:25.:05:35.
:05:35.:05:38.

for me. I need a few more degrees, yes? Their relationship has changed

:05:38.:05:42.

in their 15 years together. She is not afraid to share her thoughts.

:05:42.:05:48.

It is different now obviously. I understand the events more and it

:05:48.:05:53.

has to be more of the discussion. If I am not understanding what he

:05:53.:05:58.

is saying or agreeing, then it is good to discuss it. It didn't look

:05:58.:06:04.

too bad. It started off, then it opened up further. Keep it tight.

:06:04.:06:10.

Changes difficult. She knows I am successful if I do that. Now the

:06:10.:06:15.

position is that if I make changes, I might not be successful so as a

:06:15.:06:20.

coach you have to overcome that and say there is a benefit to this.

:06:20.:06:24.

two still early days. It was a good session but I still have a lot of

:06:24.:06:34.
:06:34.:06:41.

work on, but I am pleased with the Javelin is the event Jess has

:06:41.:06:44.

always struggled with the most. At last summer's World Championships

:06:44.:06:48.

it cost her gold. There's a lot to work on with javelin coach Mick

:06:48.:06:58.
:06:58.:07:03.

Hill. The difference is that, or that. It is minute. That much body

:07:03.:07:12.

lean. It looks good today. It is about patients. It was the same in

:07:12.:07:18.

long-jump the other day. It is nice to feel it, to do it in the correct

:07:18.:07:23.

way, but you can quite easily lose it again so I need to keep

:07:23.:07:26.

practising and hope it comes naturally. It is great to have

:07:26.:07:34.

sessions like this - it gives me confidence. It is good. If we have

:07:35.:07:41.

reasonable throws, we will measure them but it can sap your confidence

:07:41.:07:46.

if you think it is far and it is not. Hopefully it is OK, but it is

:07:46.:07:53.

confidential. 50m! Today it has felt better but we will see how far

:07:53.:07:59.

it is. Even if it is only 40 metres, I am still happy with the session.

:07:59.:08:04.

You have got to know what you did. We have an athlete who realises the

:08:04.:08:09.

javelin is quite difficult. For the last few years it has been quite

:08:09.:08:15.

good to Jess and she seems to produce on the big day. 42 metres

:08:16.:08:21.

plus off a shortened run is very good. The each session she throws,

:08:21.:08:26.

her confidence is getting better and better. It will probably take a

:08:26.:08:30.

knock again at some stage this winter, but it is whether you can

:08:30.:08:37.

get back up again and keep moving forwards. You are actually training

:08:37.:08:43.

like a beast. Some great craft. I have pushed the sessions on a

:08:43.:08:50.

little bit and she's working very well. Were that to complement?

:08:50.:08:55.

it was. You can play that back as much as you like. What did you do

:08:55.:09:03.

on Sunday? A grass running session on Monday morning, and circuits in

:09:03.:09:11.

the afternoon. In Formula One, have mechanics who look at the car and

:09:11.:09:17.

Tinker, that is Alison's role. She does the job of 15 Formula One

:09:17.:09:21.

mechanics. Unfortunately they haven't got a spare car in the

:09:21.:09:25.

garage in case this one doesn't work. If you are injury-free year

:09:25.:09:31.

on year, you can make some progress. Injury makes you take a step back,

:09:31.:09:35.

but if you can keep taking steps forward that is what makes you

:09:35.:09:38.

successful. Jess has been injury- free since missing the last

:09:38.:09:46.

Olympics. Her physio Alison Rose can see things that other people

:09:46.:09:51.

can't and has detected a problem in her hip. I am just wondering if she

:09:51.:09:56.

is not going correctly through. If she was running like that that

:09:56.:10:06.

day... It is time to get to work with some eye-watering therapy.

:10:06.:10:10.

is incredibly tight and then she screams and you know you are on the

:10:10.:10:16.

right spot. There is more tension than there should be. The hip not

:10:16.:10:21.

moving as it should obviously affects the where you walk and the

:10:21.:10:26.

where you run. I have had a tight calf muscle, but obviously Alison

:10:26.:10:31.

picks up on a lot more stuff that I don't really notice until there is

:10:31.:10:36.

a problem so it is good to get rid of this tightness before it creates

:10:36.:10:40.

something else. You generally will watch her, figure out what you are

:10:40.:10:48.

looking out, do some tests, then treat Again and recheck. I am happy,

:10:48.:10:54.

that is much better. It is just much more even. It feels good. I

:10:54.:11:03.

can just feel some soreness. Is it still a little bit more tied?

:11:03.:11:07.

seems more even. It's will loosen off.

:11:07.:11:11.

With the heavy winter workload out of the way it's time to put Jess to

:11:11.:11:13.

the test. Her first competitive appearance comes with home

:11:13.:11:23.
:11:23.:11:33.

I did shot put the other week but this is my first kind of real one

:11:33.:11:41.

so I am just blowing off the cobwebs. It is the power and

:11:41.:11:45.

strength, that is the additional weight training programme you have

:11:45.:11:49.

got. The is difficult when you first start because you have been

:11:49.:11:54.

in winter training so you are doing the same thing every week. It is

:11:54.:12:01.

nice to kind of start freshening up, getting competitive again and

:12:01.:12:05.

seeing how things work. She looks really good at the minute. She

:12:05.:12:15.
:12:15.:12:16.

seems to be running well. We will see how it goes. Jessica is back in

:12:16.:12:21.

action, but her first long jump competition is not going to plan.

:12:21.:12:25.

You have already set yourself into the somersault position and it is

:12:25.:12:31.

not coming back underneath. You are in that position, and then you are

:12:31.:12:40.

in. It is poor. Below 6.424 indoors, it is not good enough. I am

:12:40.:12:45.

disappointed with the long jump, but generally it is the first

:12:45.:12:50.

competition of the year. Hopefully I will learn that rustiness off

:12:50.:13:00.
:13:00.:13:04.

I have got the hurdles this afternoon so again it will be the

:13:04.:13:09.

first time I have raced. Obviously I like to run a good time but we

:13:09.:13:16.

will see how it goes, just blowing that rustiness off. I am quite

:13:16.:13:21.

nervous. I want to go away at least a little bit happy. She is in good

:13:21.:13:31.
:13:31.:13:34.

form so it is exciting seeing it, out in competition. This time, Tony

:13:34.:13:40.

is not disappointed as she powers Clear in the hurdles. I am pleased

:13:40.:13:45.

with that. It is a good time. I don't know what the official time

:13:45.:13:49.

was but I am happy with that. It is a better ending to the day than I

:13:50.:13:57.

thought. She was ill last night so to come into this not feeling 100%

:13:57.:14:01.

physically, I wouldn't tell any of the other media that because you

:14:01.:14:06.

are not going to show your film until ages away.

:14:06.:14:16.

One is your mind set going into the blocks? I'm not being funny, but I

:14:16.:14:26.
:14:26.:14:27.

just after move on from there. I was annoyed with the long jump.

:14:27.:14:32.

do you think you got stuck? first race of the season. Every

:14:32.:14:37.

competition is important and you want every competition to count, so

:14:37.:14:41.

there are nervous but you just want to keep doing well. I will keep

:14:41.:14:45.

focusing on the next competition, my training, and getting that right

:14:45.:14:55.
:14:55.:15:15.

Under 15 girls... We're next to the Yorkshire county championships. It

:15:15.:15:19.

tends to mark the start of the season. It's nice and low key. You

:15:19.:15:24.

can get a bit of throwing done before we start. Next week we have

:15:24.:15:29.

Manchester. The week after that we've off to austya. I'm stiff

:15:29.:15:32.

today. I've always done championships like this. It's nice

:15:32.:15:36.

to dot Yorkshire championships and mix it with Grand Prixs as well.

:15:36.:15:40.

It's nice to still have that variation. They're still great

:15:40.:15:44.

events. There's a lot of good kids who are hopefully going to be

:15:44.:15:54.
:15:54.:15:55.

future champions who start here as well. It's a good event. Your left

:15:55.:16:00.

foot is late. The shot is still ahead of the hip. That's why it's

:16:00.:16:04.

better, but it hasn't quite got a bite on it. I think I need to stay

:16:04.:16:12.

back over and work this more. Why does he look as if she's in

:16:12.:16:18.

shot putt detention? The standard is mixed. 69-year-old Sheila admits

:16:19.:16:24.

she's unlikely to mix it to the Olympics. She's such a nice person

:16:24.:16:30.

is Jess. She encourages even me not throwing so far. I think she might

:16:30.:16:35.

take me next year. I might lose my focus and then she can bust out a

:16:35.:16:39.

six metres and take me. When the throwing stops the

:16:39.:16:47.

autographs and photographs start. feel bad if I say no. I kind of

:16:47.:16:51.

expect it when I come to competitions like this, but it's

:16:51.:16:54.

hard sometimes because you want to stay focused. I still want to

:16:54.:17:03.

compete really well. You just have to get a bit of a balance I suppose.

:17:03.:17:07.

Bit windy off the left, if you do what you did the other day, I think

:17:07.:17:11.

it will go. Jess has been going good so we're looking forward to

:17:11.:17:20.

the comp. It's blowing her over. It nearly

:17:20.:17:23.

blew the javelin away from her and into her head. It's a challenge,

:17:23.:17:28.

but again, this is why she's doing this competition. It's a long way

:17:28.:17:35.

away from the Olympic Stadium, but it's very, very useful. She had a

:17:35.:17:40.

smack at that early and hard. Something was missing today. I'm

:17:40.:17:44.

still happy with the way it's going. It was OK. I'm hoping that I'll

:17:44.:17:49.

save a good throw for a couple of weeks' time. We were hoping for a

:17:49.:17:54.

bit more, but well, it's not been too bad. Soy suppose I shouldn't

:17:54.:17:57.

complain. I'd have liked to have seen a bit more today. What time

:17:57.:18:03.

tomorrow? I don't care. I'm taking the javelin. He's so annoyed.

:18:03.:18:10.

we have a photo? Yeah, no problem. With her technique tuend in the

:18:10.:18:16.

individual event, it's time to put it all together. She heads to

:18:16.:18:19.

Austria for the multievent championships a crucial dress

:18:19.:18:29.
:18:29.:18:36.

We're in a small town in Austria. This is the place where all the

:18:36.:18:39.

world's best multieventers gather at the end of May to compete in the

:18:40.:18:44.

one big combine events competition outside of any major championships.

:18:44.:18:48.

This will be the one heptathlon that Jessica does before the

:18:48.:18:52.

Olympics. So this is the one chance really to see what kind of shape

:18:52.:18:57.

she's in in a heptathlon setting. She will do other competitions but

:18:57.:19:02.

this is to see how it gels together. It would be nice to win, but it is

:19:02.:19:05.

also really important that I just see how all the individual events

:19:05.:19:09.

are going and how they're coming together and how my training's gone.

:19:09.:19:16.

I think both are equally important. It's good to have everyone here.

:19:16.:19:22.

It's great to have their support and Ali and my physio and soft

:19:22.:19:27.

tissue therapist. They know my body inside out. I know if there's ever

:19:27.:19:34.

an issue that they are there, on hand, to help and fix it. Say --

:19:34.:19:39.

for a sponsored athlete, your socks are dire, worse than dire. I think

:19:39.:19:46.

they're the worst socks we get in the clinic. You are joking.

:19:46.:19:50.

It is a tense environment and a tense situation when you're coming

:19:50.:19:53.

to compete. It's nice to bring a bit of humour to it, a couple of

:19:53.:19:56.

days before and relaxed, then get ready to switch on and compete

:19:57.:20:06.
:20:07.:20:12.

Welcome Jessica Ennis! Ever year they do a presentation in the civic

:20:13.:20:17.

hall. It's part and parcel of the tradition. They did in the past,

:20:17.:20:22.

they used to bring in the athletes one by one on the back of Harley-

:20:22.:20:26.

Davidsons, which was phenomenal, but worrying to a coach.

:20:26.:20:30.

It's great. This is my fourth year here. It's always really good crowd

:20:30.:20:35.

and loads of support. It's just a really nice occasion for the town.

:20:35.:20:40.

Yeah, it's really great. The crowd and everyone's brilliant. This is

:20:40.:20:46.

Jen ter Osa. She's lovely. She's the only reason I do heptathlon.

:20:46.:20:56.
:20:56.:21:08.

I coach heptathlon. I don't do it! She's on it has been the team

:21:08.:21:13.

description. She's fouk used, ready to go. Warm up went well and she's

:21:13.:21:19.

happy. You can't ask for more than that.

:21:19.:21:22.

As ever, the hurdles are the first of the seven events. Jess and Tony

:21:22.:21:32.
:21:32.:21:36.

are looking for the strong start. Happy with that? Yeah. Good. Good

:21:36.:21:41.

startment I feel a bit nervous about the jumps because we haven't

:21:41.:21:51.
:21:51.:21:57.

done any jumps competitions before It got a bit toey for me. Do you

:21:57.:22:04.

feel close? Not really. I don't know.

:22:04.:22:08.

Not good. Not good. 85 is not acceptable. So she won't be happy

:22:08.:22:18.
:22:18.:22:19.

with that in the slightest. We'll just move on, move on. A very solid

:22:20.:22:27.

shot putt, 14.51, a season res best. It's been an OK first three events.

:22:28.:22:34.

If she can run quicker than 23.21 we will push on a little bit.

:22:34.:22:43.

Heaven knows what you'll score on Go, go, go.

:22:43.:22:53.
:22:53.:23:00.

It's even. That's even. Don't You know the last five metres, you

:23:00.:23:05.

need to lean in. 22.88, fantastic time in the 200. Kind of topped and

:23:05.:23:09.

tailed it very well. She's a few points up on her personal best. All

:23:09.:23:14.

together it's been a good day. only halfway through the events.

:23:14.:23:17.

There's there's lots of work to be done.

:23:17.:23:22.

No tension in this event. Tension will hurt you. Don't try too hard

:23:22.:23:26.

but still put the effort in. But loose cheeks, facial cheeks and

:23:26.:23:32.

stuff like that. This is going really well. Allow it to do its

:23:32.:23:36.

thing. You're buzzing kid. You're absolutely buzzing, just be smart

:23:36.:23:40.

now. Not that you're not smart. I think

:23:40.:23:50.
:23:50.:24:29.

Well done Jess. I'm so glad I've not come away disappointed. I

:24:29.:24:35.

always come away from the long jump disappointed. So, yeah. Equal PB,

:24:35.:24:41.

yeah. Yes! Come on now, I've got to nail

:24:41.:24:51.
:24:51.:25:04.

He's happy. We're all happy. She's pulled down on it a bit.

:25:04.:25:11.

47.11, so a PB. We've had a couple of PBs. That's good. Going into the

:25:11.:25:15.

last event, the 800m, Jess has the chance not only to win the

:25:15.:25:25.
:25:25.:25:41.

competition, but to break the Come on Jess! All right.

:25:41.:25:51.
:25:51.:25:53.

208. Number one.

:25:53.:25:58.

Jess? I'm so pleased that I managed to get most of the events right and

:25:58.:26:02.

score a big personal best and a British record and to win, it's

:26:02.:26:12.
:26:12.:26:17.

just brilliant. Well done. He's the man. It's only an FA Cup semi-final.

:26:18.:26:23.

We're just through to the final. One to go, mate.

:26:23.:26:26.

Thankfully all the events came together and I got it this time.

:26:26.:26:30.

It's all about the Olympics now. I've done my first heptathlon of

:26:30.:26:34.

the season. I just sharpen up individual events and then the next

:26:34.:26:38.

big one is the Olympics. It's very much here now. I'm ready for it, I

:26:38.:26:43.

think. Incredibly happy, as she should be. If you can repeat this

:26:43.:26:46.

performance it will be tough for people to beat her in London. You

:26:46.:26:50.

never know. You do the best you can, whatever score you get, hopefully

:26:50.:26:54.

that's good enough to win. They've trained six days a week

:26:54.:26:58.

since September. Jess has produced the performance of her life in

:26:58.:27:02.

Austria and her medical team has kept injuries at bay. The golden

:27:02.:27:12.
:27:12.:27:12.

COMMENTATOR: Absolutely brilliant by Jessica Ennis. Everybody else is

:27:12.:27:18.

trailing in her wake. One moment to do this in front of a home crowd in

:27:19.:27:23.

London. I just wanted to make sure I gave them such a show.

:27:23.:27:28.

COMMENTATOR: Here goes Jess! She is going to be the Olympic champion.

:27:28.:27:33.

Everybody is on their feet. The pride of Sheffield. The pride of

:27:33.:27:39.

Great Britain. Jessica Ennis is the Olympic champion! All this hard

:27:39.:27:42.

work, I had to give it everything at the end.

:27:43.:27:48.

COMMENTATOR: It's a perfect day for Jessica Ennis. Four years ago, we

:27:48.:27:53.

were sat on her sofa at her house watching the Beijing Olympics and

:27:53.:27:58.

thinking, damn, what might have been? Tony and alley and everyone's

:27:58.:28:02.

worked with me for the past few years and after Beijing everyone

:28:02.:28:05.

just said we're going for another four years to make sure you get

:28:05.:28:10.

there in one piece and finish what we started.

:28:10.:28:16.

So this is the moment that's made it all worthwhile, the hill runs,

:28:16.:28:20.

the drills, the frustrations and the -- we've seen how hard Jessica

:28:21.:28:25.

Ennis has worked for this Gold Medal at her home Olympics.

:28:25.:28:30.

I was just really overwhelmed with the crowd firstly, and just

:28:30.:28:33.
