'..Representing Europe - Charley Hull.' | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
From like seven or eight, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
I really noticed that I wanted to be world number one. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
You know, as you do, like a kid, you just say it, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
probably you don't actually mean it. It's just something that you say. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
Later on, I thought, "Ah, I'm actually quite good at this." | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
So, here I am now. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
6,000 miles from home | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
and a world away from the life of a typical 18-year-old. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
Charley Hull and her dad, Dave, are in California | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
for the biggest tournament in women's golf. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
You don't really have the time to see stuff like this | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
because you're concentrating on your golf, you know? | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
But it's nice to see some places. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
Yeah, we don't have much time for, you know, sightseeing, | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
but that's the way Charley is. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
She gets to a place and then she focuses on her golf. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:07
Charley is one of the most exciting sporting talents | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
to come along in recent years. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
For nearly a decade, we've been following the story | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
of a little girl with a big personality. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
I'm just me. It's not fake. It's just I say what I see. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
Erm, people that don't like me, they can lump it, you know? | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
I'm not bothered, but hopefully, if they like me, that's good. Thanks. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
Thanks if you like me. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
Hey, welcome to my home. This is where I live with my mum and dad. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:14
Lovely to see you. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
She's a world-beater. There's no question about that in my mind. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
She's on the threshold of greatness now. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
That's a wonderful shot. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
This is where everything started, in this garden, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
where me and my friend used to practise in his garden. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
We used to stand on a football here, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
balance on it on one leg or whatever, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
and try to chip into the tree with these plastic golf balls | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
and try to hit the branches into the tree. Sometimes, we'd hit it | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
and sometimes, it'd fly into the other garden. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
But those were the little tricks we used to get up to. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
I can't believe the golf clubs I used to play with are so tiny. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
You know, I played with, I think I played with this one at Turnberry | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
when I was about nine or something, or one like this anyway. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
I can't believe how whippy they are and everything. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
It's amazing how much I've grown over the past couple of years. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
Charley was just nine years old | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
when she stunned the golfing world. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
She beat 24,000 women of all ages | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
to become the amateur national champion. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
I feel quite proud of myself and a bit cold | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
cos I've never played on a golf course like this. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
I haven't...haven't... It's a links course, it is. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
And it's completely different to a normal golf course. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
I just wanted to be the best, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
so I just kind of practised and practised and practised | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
and here I am now. I don't think, "Oh, when I was younger..." | 0:03:49 | 0:03:53
It just feels like I've gradually just got here throughout the years. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
Representing Europe, Charley Hull. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
WILD APPLAUSE AND CHEERS | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
Fast forward just eight years and Charley was part of a European team | 0:04:02 | 0:04:07
taking on America in the Solheim Cup. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
Charley made history. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
Not only did she help Europe win | 0:04:21 | 0:04:22
for the first time on American soil, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
she was also the competition's youngest ever player. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
Charley only turned professional 12 months ago. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
It was a remarkable first season. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
She won rookie-of-the-year | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
and was runner-up in five tournaments in a row. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
This year, she went one better. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
Claiming her first title in Morocco. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
I felt really good holeing that putt. It's the best feeling ever, | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
but I've been dreaming so long about winning a tournament. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
I knew I was going to win it one time and when I won, I didn't... | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
it didn't feel as good as I thought it was going to feel, | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
so I just want to win more. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
This is Kettering Golf Club | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
where Charley's journey began | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
with her dad 13 years ago. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
And where she still comes to practise. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
In the school holidays, she'd come down early in the morning. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
I'd drop her off and she'd play a round. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:12
And then they'd go over the trees over there | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
and they'd play a Ryder Cup. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
So they used to put the balls down | 0:05:17 | 0:05:18
and have to try to get it over the tree, you know? | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
They used to have play competitions within competitions | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
if you know what I mean. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
It was fun. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
It wasn't what score, it was what shots they could hit | 0:05:28 | 0:05:31
and they used to experiment, her and the boys, hitting different shots. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
And having a game, you know, without a par, it doesn't matter. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
They'd just be in the trees | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
and seeing what trick shots they could get out. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
And they used to have great fun doing that. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
Charley's early natural ability | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
was soon clear for all to see. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
She could just pick a golf club up | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
and even if she weren't swinging it right, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
her hands were so good to correct it | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
that she used to be able to hit it and shape a shot. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
It's just a gift. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
What was she like as a young girl? | 0:06:03 | 0:06:05
She was very mischievous. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
Always asking questions. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
Very inquisitive. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:11
Very bubbly. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
Sometimes, I thought she was very naughty. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
Chase her around the room. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
A lovely child. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:19
A lovely child... with a killer swing. | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
Charley's success soon won national attention. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
Please welcome Charley! Woo hoo! | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
Give me some. Give me some. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:30
All right! | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
I'm joined in the studio by national golf champion, Charley Hull. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
She's with us! Hi, Charley. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:36
And now people at home might be watching, | 0:06:36 | 0:06:38
thinking you're very young to be a champion. How old are you? | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
Just nine. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:42
Put your hands together for Charley Hull. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
Congratulations. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
Shouldn't you be in bed by now? | 0:06:47 | 0:06:48
Well, I should, but... | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
so what? | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
That's the kind of attitude that makes a champion. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
Here you are, age nine, what are your ambitions? | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
Erm... | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
To be a... Well... | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
What's ambition mean? | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
AUDIENCE LAUGHS | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
I'm competitive in everything I do from... | 0:07:10 | 0:07:14
If I was trying to tie my shoelaces against someone, | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
probably I'd be competitive there, | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
to hitting the golf ball. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:20
-RADIO: -'We've got a great show planned for you today | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
'and we are broadcasting from the Kraft Nabisco Championship.' | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
Charley's come to California to play in the first major of the year. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
She'll be up against 100 of the world's best players | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
and after her success in the Solheim Cup, | 0:07:43 | 0:07:47
she already has fans in the States. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
I love golf. I love being out there in front of a big crowd of people. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
I love the feeling of pressure as well. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
That's the one thing I've always loved. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
The feeling of, you know, having to pull it off, | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
or you're going to be embarrassed in front of a lot of people. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:02
We are actually in the entertainment business | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
because people pay to watch us and people get a buzz out of it. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
Good luck to you and your beautiful daughter. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
Cheers, thank you. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
And we'll sort of keep an eye on you guys. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
OK. We'll see you out there. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:18
OK. Good. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
First on the team from England, | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
Charley Hull. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:24
APPLAUSE AND CHEERS | 0:08:24 | 0:08:29
When she's not criss-crossing continents, | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
home for Charley is here with her family | 0:08:40 | 0:08:43
on the outskirts of Kettering in Northamptonshire. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
And I thought if I have a wand, | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
I might be able to make the dog speak, but it never worked. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
He just growled at me. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
'Team Hull, it's er...two sisters, her mum and her friends.' | 0:08:53 | 0:08:58
Charley said you ate all of them. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
Yeah, yeah, and who's ate the rest of them? | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
'To them, Charley's not a golfer. Charley's Charley. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
'They're all the same. They're three girls. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
'They look at her as Charley | 0:09:08 | 0:09:09
'and, especially Nicole, | 0:09:09 | 0:09:10
'if Charley gets beyond herself, | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
'Nicole'll tell her.' | 0:09:12 | 0:09:13
She's very much like her mum. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
-I'm on a diet, so I won't be able to eat any. -Oh, don't be silly! | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
Cos someone on Instagram the other day told me I looked fat. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
-So I've... -What?! Who told you that? | 0:09:23 | 0:09:24
-Don't know, some follower. -Don't listen. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
'She always wanted to do what she wanted to do. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
'If I wanted her to be dressed in a way, or do her hair in a way | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
'or said, "Do this," she would not do it. She had to do it her way.' | 0:09:33 | 0:09:38
So where does that stubbornness streak come from? | 0:09:38 | 0:09:42
I think, definitely, from Dave's side. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
Must be because my other daughter was fine. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
He says it comes from you. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
Really? Oh, I don't see myself that way. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
Gravy's good, Bas. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:57
'Charley gets her competitive streak from her mum. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
'Her mum's so competitive, even having a game of cards.' | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
She wants to win and little horns come up like a devil. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:08
She really wants to win. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
Oh, I love Dr Who! Yeah. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
I want to be in Dr Who one day. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
Yeah, I'd like to be his assistant. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
So, you don't want to be a spy no more then? | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
'I wanted to be a golfer as a kid. I always wanted to be one. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
'If I wasn't a golfer, I wanted to be a spy. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
'I'll tell you, I'm quite sneaky.' | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
Yeah, I think I'm quite sneaky. I like it because people think I'm... | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
Like, my friends think I'm... away with the fairies, | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
but really I'm... My head's screwed on. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:35
I'm just a taxi driver and a baby-sitter | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
and a ball picker upper and an alarm clock, you know, | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
"Come on. You've got to get up," | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
and it's just... | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
It's just accompanying her for what she needs. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
I do the donkey work and let her play the golf. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:55
Well, on the tour, it's different now cos everybody's professional, | 0:11:00 | 0:11:05
but as amateur, I've seen a lot of, you know, dads caddying | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
and they were moaning at the kids when they hit a bad shot. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
And I near cried. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
I thought that poor kid's probably never going to play golf | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
all their life cos they're going to hate it. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:19
You know, so I never used to caddy Charley. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
I just wanted her to go out and enjoy it. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:25
And that's what she does. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
But a lot of parents... | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
they want it more than the kids do. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
All I want to do is...just support her. That's my job. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
It's to support her and let her play golf. That's it. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:39
Let's go hit a shot, Dad. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
A shot. See? I'm going to get over here now. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
I still think I'd do all right though if he wasn't there, | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
but it's just good to have someone there to... | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
Like when I'm away by myself, | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
when I go out of England, if I was away for like three weeks, | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
I probably wouldn't call him at all | 0:11:54 | 0:11:55
because I don't really need to speak to him. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
-No, that's how we are. -That's how I am. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:00
Like I'd probably speak to my friends, but I don't know. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:03
If I had a good round, | 0:12:03 | 0:12:04
I'd just be like, "Yeah, I played well. Thanks, Dad." That's it. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
That's true. That's the way she is. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:10
I'm one of these people, if I'm not... | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
If they're not there, I don't really need to speak to them. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
I don't really need to tell him. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:16
It's not like he's not going to be there when I'm back. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
Not there when I'm back. Like I know he's going to be there. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
Unless he has a heart attack or something, but I don't know but... | 0:12:21 | 0:12:25
-You know what I mean? -Lovely, eh? | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
-RADIO: -'10 KXPS I am Julie Buehler. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:36
'Charley Hull is out here participating as well. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
-'Now, she's one over in the first day. She's spunky, Dom. -Spunky! | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
'And she's fun to watch.' | 0:12:42 | 0:12:43
She still seems very young. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:56
We have to do simple, little things just like we've done | 0:12:56 | 0:12:59
since she was a kid, but on the golf course... Oh! She's a tiger. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:03
She believes in herself | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
and she thinks she knows it all. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:09
And that's why she's good. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:11
Even sometimes she's wrong, but she sorts it out herself eventually. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:19
And a lot of parents would say to their child, | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
"You don't know it all," and they tell them that. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:26
That's right. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:27
They...they do. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
And they can tell them it, | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
but the kids have got to learn it themselves. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
It's a bit like when they go out in the street and play, you know, | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
I mean, if they never see a car, they get run over. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
They have to learn that...in life, they are going to get a few knocks | 0:13:40 | 0:13:44
before they learn things right. | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
Life for Dave is spent supporting his daughter on the tour. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:50
It's a sacrifice he's happy to pay. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
I think there is things that I would have liked to have done, | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
but I'm more happy at seeing her get on, you know? | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
That's my enjoyment. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:01
Erm, you know, you could have new carpets, a new car... | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
OK, I don't have any of them, | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
but, no, all the money went towards Charley | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
to let her do what she wants cos she enjoys it. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:13
I've always been used to him being so supportive to me. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
So, it's kind of like, "Ah, I take it for granted," | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
where actually I'm now starting to realise | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
that my dad and my mum specially have been really good. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
My mum, she doesn't know too much about golf. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
I remember the first time she came and watched me play. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
I was about eight years old | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31
and I hit my six iron to like five feet and I thought... | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
everyone thought it was a great shot. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:35
And she turns around and goes to Dad, | 0:14:35 | 0:14:37
"Oh, well, that wasn't very good, was it?" And Dad was like, | 0:14:37 | 0:14:40
"She just hit it to five feet with a six iron." | 0:14:40 | 0:14:42
And she was like, "Well, aren't you meant to hole it?" | 0:14:42 | 0:14:44
But I think she's understood more of the game now. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
And she gets...she enjoys it a lot. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
Baseinka's, she's pretty much like Charley. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
She just gets on with it and she understands that we have to go away. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
I mean, she couldn't come here | 0:14:57 | 0:14:59
cos, I mean, she's had a stroke. She's on warfarin. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
She'd have to have injections every time before she gets on a plane. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:04
And she don't want that, you know? | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
So, yeah, we've both got our roles to play in supporting her | 0:15:06 | 0:15:11
and that's what we do. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:12
I don't mind. It's rather sad because it gets a bit lonely. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
I've got my other family around me, | 0:15:15 | 0:15:18
but it's just at night when you come home from work | 0:15:18 | 0:15:21
and the house is empty and all I've got is a smelly dog and just myself. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:26
But then I do miss them a lot. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
But then it's so nice because I've got the remote control to myself. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
It's tidy, you know? | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
I can eat what I want and I can see them on telly or the internet. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:39
It's clear that Basienka misses you both | 0:15:39 | 0:15:43
when you're away in far-flung countries like this. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:45
Well, that's good, isn't it? Yeah, I mean, she loves me. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:47
You know, that's good. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
She knows that she's got to do certain things | 0:15:49 | 0:15:51
and that I've got to do certain things. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:53
I've said, "Bas, why don't we swap?" | 0:15:53 | 0:15:55
She says, "Oh, no, I can't. I know nothing about golf." | 0:15:55 | 0:15:58
So she... We get home and she plays her role. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:01
She gets all the clothes ready. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
Sometimes we have to get them ready | 0:16:04 | 0:16:06
as soon as we get back and go the next day. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
So we both...both work together. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:11
As a professional golfer, | 0:16:14 | 0:16:15
Charley will spend several months of the year travelling. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
It'd be easy to get distracted, | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
but her friends help keep her grounded. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:23
I need my friends to like go wild with sometimes. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:27
I need someone to look after me and keep me calm | 0:16:27 | 0:16:29
and I need my sister to learn from what to do and what not to do. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
Every probably Friday and Saturday, | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35
I just meet with my friends and relax and stuff. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
Despite knowing Charley so well, | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
she still has a few surprises. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
I do a lot of like OCD things... | 0:16:43 | 0:16:46
What about when you used to leave the house... | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
Oh, yeah, when I used to leave the house, | 0:16:49 | 0:16:51
I have to make...touch everything. It's weird. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
Make sure I play with the right ball handle. I have to think... | 0:16:53 | 0:16:57
Round the whole round of golf, I hardly think of anything. | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
I have to think of like, to keep myself concentrated, | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
I always think of the number four for some reason. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
I don't know why cos if I think of four, | 0:17:05 | 0:17:07
I think if you shoot four under par every round, | 0:17:07 | 0:17:09
then you're going to win a tournament. It's so weird. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:13
I have to wear pink socks on Thursdays and Fridays | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
and blue socks on... No, no, sorry. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
Yeah, I have to wear blue socks on Fridays, | 0:17:19 | 0:17:21
sorry, Saturdays and Sundays. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:22
I used to always wear orange on the first day of tournament, | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
but I've outgrown that now. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
THEY LAUGH | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
I've outgrown the top. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:30
Erm... Yeah. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:32
There's a good hit. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:38
One of Charley's biggest admirers | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
is two-time major winner Tony Jacklin. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:43
This is not rocket science, this thing. What you've got... | 0:17:43 | 0:17:47
You've got all of this amazing ability | 0:17:47 | 0:17:51
and you've got to just take care of the simple, simple stuff. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:56
The pair have become firm friends. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
Today, they've come to Wentworth. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:02
Lots of mud here. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:06
Blimey! You need Wellington boots. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
I've been trying to work on my tempo so much cos, after Solheim, | 0:18:09 | 0:18:13
my tempo got fast because you know when you get excited... | 0:18:13 | 0:18:17
-Yeah, I told... We went all through this, didn't we, at home? -Yeah. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
And I said to you when I won the Open, it was all about tempo. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:24
-Yeah, exactly. -Tom Weiskopf put a thing on my locker the last day... | 0:18:24 | 0:18:28
-Yeah. -..at the US open - Tempo - | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
-and that's all we thought about. -Yeah. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
When you've got all the fundamentals that you've got, | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
that's all you've got to think about. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
I talked to her and she's still like a kid to me, you know what I mean? | 0:18:40 | 0:18:44
She responds like, children - | 0:18:44 | 0:18:46
you're not sure whether they're taking it all in, you know, | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
the importance of what you're actually trying to get across. | 0:18:49 | 0:18:54
When I went to America in '67, | 0:18:54 | 0:18:56
I found that the legs... | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
The swing from the ground up is the important thing. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:01
Tempo comes from following your legs, | 0:19:01 | 0:19:04
letting your legs lead in terms of swing rhythm. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:09
And never rushing because humans want to rush all the time | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
especially when they get nervous. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:15
Well, that was a good putt. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
I want the best for her | 0:19:25 | 0:19:26
and she's told me she wants to be a great player and she's... | 0:19:26 | 0:19:30
It's all there. She's already a very, very good player. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:35
But in order to be great, you've got to beat the best | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
and I don't see any reason | 0:19:38 | 0:19:41
why she can't be up there | 0:19:41 | 0:19:43
right at the top of the game. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
A bit late. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
Good afternoon, everyone. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:52
We would like to welcome Charley Hull into the interview room. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:56
First of all, congratulations. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
What a fabulous round today. | 0:19:58 | 0:20:00
6 under 66. Now sit at 8 under overall. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
Just a few shots off the lead at a major championship. What was... | 0:20:02 | 0:20:06
Back in California, Charley is charging through the field. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:10
With just one round to go, she's only two shots off the lead. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:14
Her first major title is in sight. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
You know, I've always told her | 0:20:16 | 0:20:19
that when you go out and play golf, | 0:20:19 | 0:20:21
if you're with your mates or in a championship, | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
you don't try no harder when you're playing in a championship | 0:20:24 | 0:20:29
than you do when you're playing with your mates | 0:20:29 | 0:20:31
cos you hit the shot in the major, | 0:20:31 | 0:20:33
you hit the shot with your mates. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
Why would you play...try any harder? | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
So, if you work on that the same, | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
it'll end up fine. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
And when you saw her hitting those shots this afternoon, | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
could you read what was going on in your daughter's mind? | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
I've never been able to do that all me life. No. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:52
No. Who does? Not much. She's... | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
She was thinking about her dog at home and she says, | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
"I just stand there and look around and think about other things, Dad. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:01
"And then I look at the shot and think, time to hit the shot now." | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
You're going a bit too fast. I can't keep up with you. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
-But we haven't been past it, Dad. -Sorry? | 0:21:09 | 0:21:11
-We haven't been past it. -Charley. -Yeah? | 0:21:11 | 0:21:13
'I've never been on a holiday before or any golfing holiday. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
'So I've never spent more than a week without swinging a golf club.' | 0:21:16 | 0:21:21
Charley left school at 13 to focus on her golf. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
She had home tuition, | 0:21:24 | 0:21:26
but has never taken any exams. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:28
'People usually say school comes first, you know, | 0:21:28 | 0:21:31
'especially a lot of kids in America, | 0:21:31 | 0:21:33
'but for me, golf comes first | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
'cos I think I can always come back | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
'to my schooling later in life. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:38
'You only live once. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:40
'A lot of people say YOLO, but... | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42
'It is. You only live once.' | 0:21:42 | 0:21:43
-Hey! Do you do fresh orange? -Pardon me? -Fresh orange. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
-Lemonade. -Oh, just lemonade. -Lemonade. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
Fresh squeezed lemonade. We are the only fresh squeezed lemonade | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
-in the entire village here. -Right, lovely. Cheers. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
-Dad, can I have a lemonade, please? -Yeah. Go on. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:57
'Yeah, it'd be great if I won this one, but I'm really happy at home. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:01
'I've never been really interested in the lifestyle and like, | 0:22:01 | 0:22:04
'oh, I want to live in Florida and be with so many different people. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:07
'I'm pretty happy with my friends.' | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
-Yeah, it's real good. -Lovely. -Five dollars. -Cheers. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:13
I'm incredibly competitive. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:14
I want to win this now and we're not even playing for anything. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
That's just... I think if you're a professional sports person... | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
if me and Mum are playing Countdown, | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
I hate it when I lose. I know that's embarrassing, | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
but that's just what professional sport is all about. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:27
-You want to win. -Yeah. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
Laura Davies is Britain's most successful woman golfer. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:32
She's been at the top for over 20 years | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
and has first-hand experience | 0:22:34 | 0:22:36
of how the sport has changed. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:39
How has it changed since you were younger? | 0:22:39 | 0:22:43
Well, I think the biggest thing is the likes of yourself | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
and, you know, Lydia Ko, all such young players and also good | 0:22:45 | 0:22:49
whereas, before, it was almost like | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
you had to lose a load of tournaments | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
before you could be considered to win one | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
because people just didn't turn pro | 0:22:55 | 0:22:57
and immediately become great players. | 0:22:57 | 0:23:00
And I think that's the biggest difference - | 0:23:00 | 0:23:02
the age in the game now - cos all the great players when I was younger | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
-were all in their mid-30s. -Yeah. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:07
And now it seems the best players are in their mid-to-low 20s. | 0:23:07 | 0:23:11
-And obviously there's some teen stars. -Yeah. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
And, you know, it's great. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
I think it's great for the sport cos that's what people want to see. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
And it's good. I think women's golf is in good hands now. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:25
It may be in good hands, but Laura doesn't think it will be easy | 0:23:25 | 0:23:29
for Charley and other young players | 0:23:29 | 0:23:30
to break down existing perceptions about women in sport. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:34
I don't think anyone will, | 0:23:34 | 0:23:35
especially when you have a sport where men and women play it | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
and all they're interested in is Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
Half of the men's tour don't get a look-in | 0:23:41 | 0:23:43
because it's all about those best few players | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
and we'll never really be held | 0:23:46 | 0:23:48
in the same esteem as the men. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
Whether that's right or wrong... probably not, | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
but that's just the way it is in professional sport. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
While women's golf may not be as high profile as the men's game, | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
there are hopes that this could change | 0:24:01 | 0:24:03
and fresh blood like Charley can certainly help. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
Imaginary flag just behind me over there, yeah? | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
The teenager's fast becoming a golfing cover girl. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
This photo shoot is for the European tour magazine Golf Chic. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:17
Well, obviously the sport of golf is changing. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
It does have quite a stuffy image, | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
certainly to those who perhaps don't play the game | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
and know the reality. | 0:24:25 | 0:24:26
I just think she's a great role model | 0:24:26 | 0:24:28
for all golfers of all ages, | 0:24:28 | 0:24:30
from the young to the very old, so we're really, really pleased | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
she's going to be on the front cover. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:35
CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS | 0:24:35 | 0:24:36
Do you ever stop and think, | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
"Blimey, I'm on the front cover of this magazine?" | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
No, not really. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
I don't really like looking at myself in those photos, to be honest. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:46
I'm just like normal, so I just carry on doing what I do best - my golf. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:50
Have you ever been stopped in the street, Charley? | 0:24:50 | 0:24:52
Have I ever been stopped in the in the street? | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
By people saying, "Are you Charley Hull? Are you the golfer?" | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
Erm, no, I was actually in Nando's the other day | 0:24:57 | 0:25:00
and someone was like, "You're Charley Hull the golfer," | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
cos he was like from Corby - I can't do a Corby accent - | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
but...that's what happened and me and my friend were like, "Yeah." | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
And how did the conversation go? | 0:25:09 | 0:25:11
I just looked away and carried on eating my chicken. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13

-RADIO HOST: -'Julie Buehler here. | 0:25:19 | 0:25:21
'Final day of the Kraft Nabisco Championship | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
'and what incredible final pairings | 0:25:24 | 0:25:26
'we have for golf fans all over the world. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:29
'Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson headline the final pairing. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:34
'If anyone is going to catch them, | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
'it might be Charley Hull, the young phenom from Britain.' | 0:25:36 | 0:25:39
It's just minutes to go, | 0:25:39 | 0:25:41
before Charley's final round. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
Her preparation complete, | 0:25:47 | 0:25:49
there's understandable tension for team Hull | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
as they wait for her to start. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:54
Good luck. Nice coverage in the papers this morning... | 0:25:54 | 0:25:58
'She doesn't want money. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:00
'Never been interested in that | 0:26:00 | 0:26:01
'or fame. She just wants to win. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:04
'Honestly. That's Charley.' | 0:26:04 | 0:26:06
Zip all the way round, Chars, | 0:26:09 | 0:26:11
-there's some things in there if you need them. -Great. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:14
With her first major title in sight, | 0:26:14 | 0:26:16
it's the moment Charley's been dreaming of. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
See you, darling. Have fun. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:20
Play out your heart. Enjoy. All right? | 0:26:20 | 0:26:23
I used to be quite a shy person when I was younger, | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
but now I just kind of think you only live once, | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
just get out there and do what you got to do. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:30
You're not going to die if you hit a bad shot. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
You know, it's just that kind of attitude. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
Just go out there and play the game and enjoy it. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:38
And from England... | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
Charley Hull. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:42
APPLAUSE | 0:26:42 | 0:26:44
Playing steady. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:54
Not been too aggressive. | 0:26:54 | 0:26:58
Probably just three putted, it's the only mistake she made. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:01
So, playing...playing well. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:03
You just need to drop a few putts and you'll be up there. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:06
Just be patient. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
CROWD MOANS | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
CROWD MOANS | 0:27:15 | 0:27:16
Unlucky, kid. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:18
This time, it wasn't to be. | 0:27:22 | 0:27:25
Sadly, Charley starts to slip down the leaderboard. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:28
It's the game of golf. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:30
You play good, you play not so good. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:33
You don't know the score until the end. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:36
Instead, it was another youngster, | 0:27:44 | 0:27:46
American Lexi Thompson, who took the title. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:48
Disappointment for Charley | 0:27:48 | 0:27:50
whose game and gumption had delighted the crowd. | 0:27:50 | 0:27:53
Been a great experience. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:56
You know, today I played well the front nine | 0:27:56 | 0:27:58
then I just had a bad short putt, | 0:27:58 | 0:28:00
but I think I could be world number one in the future | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
if I work hard at it, | 0:28:03 | 0:28:04
especially from building up these years until I'm 21 | 0:28:04 | 0:28:07
and I've got a couple more years to go yet. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:10
By then, I'll be hopefully sky-high. | 0:28:10 | 0:28:12
For the winner, a cheque for 300,000 | 0:28:12 | 0:28:15
and there's a final bizarre tradition. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:18
Seventh place in the first major of the year | 0:28:24 | 0:28:26
and it's only my fifth competition so far throughout the year. | 0:28:26 | 0:28:29
I'm pretty happy with my week | 0:28:29 | 0:28:32
and I just can't wait for my next tournament now. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35 |
