That cross on the top of a volcano wasn't a Christian cross.

0:01:000:01:04

It was the symbol of a strange pagan,

0:01:050:01:08

rather frightening, religion called a "cargo cult".

0:01:080:01:10

I first heard about cargo cults in New Guinea two or three years ago.

0:01:120:01:17

And then a missionary explained them to me. He put it like this.

0:01:170:01:20

He said, "Imagine that you are a New Guinea man

0:01:200:01:25

"and you've lived all your life in what is virtually the Stone Age.

0:01:250:01:29

"You've never seen metal,

0:01:290:01:31

"or any of the other strange things that Europeans have.

0:01:310:01:34

"Then one day, you meet a strange white-faced man,

0:01:340:01:38

"who has the most incredible things.

0:01:380:01:41

"He has jeeps, he has petrol lamps,

0:01:410:01:44

"he has...glasses, he has simple things...

0:01:440:01:48

"like a fountain pen.

0:01:480:01:51

"And you look at a thing like this, and the first thing that you say is,

0:01:510:01:55

"that whatever else this is,

0:01:550:01:57

"this couldn't possibly have been made by man.

0:01:570:02:00

"I mean, how could you chip this, or how could you weave it?

0:02:000:02:04

"And if it isn't made by man, then it must come from the gods.

0:02:040:02:09

"The ancestors.

0:02:090:02:11

"And if it comes from the gods, and it's come to your island,

0:02:110:02:14

"why has it come to these white-faced people?

0:02:140:02:17

"They've done nothing to deserve it.

0:02:170:02:18

"They don't make them themselves, you can see that.

0:02:180:02:21

"What's more, they don't even do any work.

0:02:210:02:23

"They don't fish in the lagoon, they don't sweat in the hot sun,

0:02:230:02:27

"digging their gardens and planting their yams.

0:02:270:02:29

"They don't cut coconuts. In fact, they do senseless, useless things.

0:02:290:02:34

"They put up great masts with wires on the top.

0:02:340:02:38

"And at the bottom, they have boxes,

0:02:380:02:40

"which they listen to, as they make funny noises.

0:02:400:02:43

"And then they dress up people in similar uniforms,

0:02:430:02:46

"and march them up and down in a senseless, useless way.

0:02:460:02:50

"They certainly aren't doing any good.

0:02:500:02:52

"And then it dawns on you - this is the secret.

0:02:520:02:56

"The white people are doing this as a sort of ritual, designed to make

0:02:560:03:01

"the gods, or the ancestors, send the goods to them -

0:03:010:03:04

"the 'cargo', as you call it in pidgin English.

0:03:040:03:07

"The cargo, to them. Therefore, if you want the cargo,

0:03:070:03:11

"you yourself must do these extraordinary things.

0:03:110:03:14

"So you put up a great mast out of bamboo

0:03:140:03:18

"and sit at the bottom to it and walk and put fences round it.

0:03:180:03:22

"And you clear great areas in the forest,

0:03:220:03:24

"like the white men do for their airstrips.

0:03:240:03:28

"And you dress up people in uniforms.

0:03:280:03:31

"And, at the same time, in many of these cargo cults, you believe that

0:03:310:03:36

"there is going to be one particular being, a sort of messiah, who,

0:03:360:03:42

"when the apocalypse comes, when the day of judgment comes, will bring

0:03:420:03:46

"all this cargo to you, in either a great white ship or an aeroplane

0:03:460:03:52

"when the day of judgment comes."

0:03:520:03:55

This would be strange enough, if it had happened just once.

0:03:550:03:59

But in New Guinea, alone, it has happened over 30 times

0:03:590:04:04

and, as far as we can see,

0:04:040:04:05

many of these uprisings are quite unconnected with any others.

0:04:050:04:09

And, in the Pacific, it happened in many different places.

0:04:090:04:13

It happened here, in Fiji.

0:04:140:04:16

It happened a thousand miles to the eastwards, that way, in Tahiti.

0:04:160:04:21

It's happened up in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, up there.

0:04:210:04:24

It's happened in the Solomons, up here.

0:04:240:04:27

And it's also happened here, in the New Hebrides.

0:04:270:04:31

And in the island of Tanna,

0:04:310:04:33

such a cargo cult is going on at this very moment.

0:04:330:04:36

Tanna is a place where missionaries have been working

0:04:380:04:40

for a very long time.

0:04:400:04:41

Over 100 years ago, they were there.

0:04:410:04:43

And, up to 30 years ago,

0:04:430:04:45

most of the natives of Tanna attended the Presbyterian church.

0:04:450:04:50

Now, nearly all the natives of Tanna believe in this strange man,

0:04:500:04:55

who will come and bring all the cargo.

0:04:550:04:57

They call him "John Frum".

0:04:570:04:59

And perhaps, because they have been so missionised for a long time,

0:04:590:05:04

they have adopted the cross as John Frum's symbol.

0:05:040:05:08

And they wear scarlet shirts, as John Frum's colour.

0:05:080:05:12

We went to Tanna, and I went to try and do two things.

0:05:120:05:17

First of all, to find out what John Frum looked like,

0:05:170:05:22

what they believed he looked like.

0:05:220:05:24

And secondly, to find out who were the people

0:05:240:05:26

who were spreading these stories about John Frum.

0:05:260:05:30

Tanna is a very fertile island,

0:05:310:05:33

and there are quite good dirt roads linking the plantations.

0:05:330:05:37

We travelled in a truck, lent to us by one of the traders.

0:05:370:05:42

But you can't go far in Tanna before you see signs that there's

0:05:420:05:46

something very curious indeed going on in the island.

0:05:460:05:50

These gates, the palisade, and the cross were all painted brilliant red.

0:05:530:05:59

The cross itself was decorated with pink flowers,

0:06:000:06:04

and the fact that they were newly cut and unfaded

0:06:040:06:07

proved that the worship of these crosses

0:06:070:06:10

was still very active.

0:06:100:06:12

The gates have no practical use, for you can just walk round them.

0:06:120:06:16

'Close by, I saw a man and two women eyeing me curiously.

0:06:180:06:23

'So I went across and had a talk with them.

0:06:230:06:26

'From the grimy pink shirt that he was wearing,

0:06:260:06:29

'I knew that he must be a follower of John Frum.

0:06:290:06:32

'So I asked him what the crosses meant,

0:06:320:06:35

'and what was he purpose of the gates?

0:06:350:06:38

'He said that they belonged to John Frum.

0:06:380:06:40

'So I said, "Have you ever seen John Frum?"

0:06:400:06:43

' "No," he said. "I never seen him. I don't know anything about him."

0:06:430:06:47

'I talked with this man for some time,

0:06:470:06:49

'but I could get no real information at all.'

0:06:490:06:52

It was clear that finding out anything about John Frum

0:06:520:06:56

from his followers was not going to be easy.

0:06:560:06:59

Everywhere we went on the island, we saw the scarlet crosses,

0:06:590:07:03

but they were by no means all the same.

0:07:030:07:05

Some were merely two small twigs.

0:07:050:07:08

Others were much larger,

0:07:080:07:10

and this one had its own peculiar decoration.

0:07:100:07:13

But what could have been in the minds of people who sought to increase

0:07:130:07:18

the significance of this cross

0:07:180:07:19

by nailing onto it an old European shaving brush

0:07:190:07:22

and a curious little wooden bird?

0:07:220:07:26

Just beyond lay a huge field

0:07:280:07:31

that had been cleared of bush by the local people.

0:07:310:07:34

In the centre of it stood this tall mast.

0:07:340:07:37

We later discovered that, when the John Frum people

0:07:370:07:40

first put it up,

0:07:400:07:41

they claimed that it was a special radio mast,

0:07:410:07:44

enabling them to talk with John Frum himself.

0:07:440:07:48

It was obviously still regarded as an important thing,

0:07:480:07:51

for, like the crosses, it was decorated with freshly cut

0:07:510:07:53

scarlet leaves and flowers.

0:07:530:07:55

'Once again, I tried to discover something about John Frum

0:07:570:08:00

'from the people in the little settlement nearby.

0:08:000:08:03

'But, once again,

0:08:030:08:05

'they professed total ignorance.

0:08:050:08:07

'They claimed they knew nothing whatsoever

0:08:070:08:10

'about John Frum,

0:08:100:08:12

'let alone the purpose of the mast in the middle of their village.

0:08:120:08:15

'It seemed to me

0:08:150:08:18

'that, perhaps, we were rushing things,

0:08:180:08:20

'that we were being too inquisitive, too early.

0:08:200:08:24

'So I decided to change my line of enquiry.

0:08:240:08:27

'On the north-western tip of the island

0:08:270:08:30

'lives an Australian copra planter and trader named Bob Paul.

0:08:300:08:35

'He's lived there for over ten years,

0:08:350:08:38

'and we have been told that he was one of the Europeans

0:08:380:08:41

'who had been on the island during the last active uprising,

0:08:410:08:45

'when John Frum's prophet

0:08:450:08:47

'organised the Tanna people into an army,

0:08:470:08:49

'and from all accounts, it looked, for a little time,

0:08:490:08:52

'as though there might be a full-scale revolt.

0:08:520:08:56

'Bob Paul's house is on the coast.

0:08:560:09:00

'I talked to him in his garden, by the sea.'

0:09:000:09:03

Bob, tell me about this famous Tanna Army.

0:09:050:09:07

Where did you first see it?

0:09:070:09:09

The first manifestation I saw...

0:09:090:09:12

I was down this particular area,

0:09:120:09:16

picking up copra - buying copra from natives.

0:09:160:09:20

I noticed them drilling, I noticed a party drilling...

0:09:200:09:23

..in the square near the village.

0:09:250:09:27

When I asked what was going on, they said, "This is the Tanna Army."

0:09:280:09:32

And what were they wearing?

0:09:320:09:34

Erm...caps...

0:09:340:09:36

imitation American caps.

0:09:360:09:38

And, erm...

0:09:380:09:40

a singlet...

0:09:400:09:42

with "TA", meaning "Tanna Army"...

0:09:420:09:46

and a big "USA"

0:09:460:09:49

across the chest.

0:09:490:09:51

Long trousers... Sand boots with long trousers tucked in

0:09:510:09:54

the sand boots.

0:09:540:09:56

Something after the style of puttees or gaiters.

0:09:560:09:58

And guns?

0:09:580:09:59

Yes, very well-made wooden guns.

0:09:590:10:04

Made mainly out of bamboo.

0:10:040:10:08

Carved to resemble an American carbine...

0:10:080:10:12

and they had quite a long bayonet on the end of them.

0:10:120:10:15

What did they do next?

0:10:150:10:17

They...got a bit adventuresome...

0:10:170:10:19

..and marched around the surrounding villages.

0:10:210:10:23

Scared the wits out of them.

0:10:230:10:25

The other villagers were really frightened?

0:10:270:10:29

Oh, my word, yes.

0:10:290:10:30

They were really scared.

0:10:330:10:34

Terrified.

0:10:340:10:36

And then, as...

0:10:370:10:39

As they noticed they weren't stopped at that,

0:10:390:10:41

they went farther and farther afield.

0:10:410:10:43

Finally, they did a grand march, right around the whole island.

0:10:430:10:46

Did they come round here?

0:10:460:10:47

Yes.

0:10:470:10:49

They didn't come through my place here,

0:10:490:10:53

but the Presbyterian mission has a plantation nearby.

0:10:530:10:57

I was coming down the road

0:10:580:11:00

which leads into there,

0:11:000:11:02

and I passed through the army, marching along there.

0:11:020:11:04

I had seen them before.

0:11:040:11:06

The only way they could go was through the mission,

0:11:060:11:08

if they continued on that road.

0:11:080:11:10

So...

0:11:100:11:11

..I dropped in and saw the missionary,

0:11:130:11:16

who was quite a plucky little fellow, actually.

0:11:160:11:19

He said, "No, they won't pass here, that's one thing."

0:11:210:11:24

It was... So, that was the finale of their march,

0:11:240:11:28

was to march through the Presbyterian mission...

0:11:280:11:30

and terrorise the boys who were enjoying the Presbyterian mission.

0:11:300:11:35

So we went up and stopped them.

0:11:350:11:37

How?

0:11:370:11:39

Told them to go to blazes!

0:11:390:11:41

THEY LAUGH Or words to that effect?

0:11:410:11:43

Yes, we actually stood in the road where they couldn't cross,

0:11:430:11:46

and told them they couldn't go through here...

0:11:460:11:49

And if they tried to go through, they'd be in trouble.

0:11:510:11:54

'After we had been in Tanna for a week,

0:11:540:11:56

'I felt that the people might have got used to our presence,

0:11:560:11:59

'and have realised that we were not government officials,

0:11:590:12:02

'and that, therefore, they might be more willing to talk about John Frum.

0:12:020:12:06

'So, one afternoon, I drove up to the large clearing,

0:12:060:12:08

'the namakal,

0:12:080:12:10

'which is found outside each village,

0:12:100:12:12

'where, every day, the men gather to drink kava.

0:12:120:12:15

'I had to be a little careful,

0:12:150:12:16

'for this is a semi-sacred ritual ground, forbidden to women,

0:12:160:12:20

'and anyone who goes there during kava drinking

0:12:200:12:22

'must walk very slowly and keep quiet

0:12:220:12:25

'if he's not to break the taboos.

0:12:250:12:27

'I was not entirely sure what sort of reception I would get.

0:12:270:12:30

'The men, however, though a little suspicious, slowly gathered round.

0:12:300:12:34

'I began, not by asking about John Frum,

0:12:340:12:36

'but about kava, which they showed me.

0:12:360:12:39

'Kava is the root of a pepper plant

0:12:390:12:42

'which is made into a drink and, here on Tanna,

0:12:420:12:45

'it's prepared by a young man, who chews it.

0:12:450:12:48

'This unhygienic custom

0:12:510:12:54

'was one of the first things forbidden by the missionaries,

0:12:540:12:57

'and the mere fact it was going on in the namakal

0:12:570:13:00

'was proof that these people

0:13:000:13:02

'no longer belonged to the mission,

0:13:020:13:04

'or "the school", as they call it.

0:13:040:13:07

'Kava is drunk all over

0:13:070:13:08

'the Southwest Pacific.

0:13:080:13:10

'But here in Tanna,

0:13:100:13:12

'it's prepared in a much more concentrated form

0:13:120:13:14

'than almost anywhere else.

0:13:140:13:16

'The resultant drink

0:13:200:13:21

'is extremely potent,

0:13:210:13:23

'and must be thrown back in one gulp.

0:13:230:13:25

'The drug it contains is so strong

0:13:270:13:30

'that it makes people moody and irritable when they've drunk it,

0:13:300:13:33

'which is one of the reasons why no-one shouts or dashes about

0:13:330:13:36

'on a namakal.

0:13:360:13:38

'When everyone had drunk their kava,

0:13:390:13:42

'I began talking to one of the few men in the village

0:13:420:13:44

'who spoke understandable English.'

0:13:440:13:46

How many people here

0:13:460:13:49

belong to John Frum?

0:13:490:13:51

Many people here, on this site?

0:13:510:13:53

Yes, all of us.

0:13:530:13:56

All of us.

0:13:560:13:57

What job did you have

0:14:000:14:02

before you...before John Frum came?

0:14:020:14:05

We were in school.

0:14:050:14:07

- Mission school? - Mission school.

0:14:070:14:09

Presbyterian church.

0:14:090:14:10

And you were what?

0:14:130:14:15

I'm a teacher.

0:14:150:14:16

- A teacher? - Yes.

0:14:160:14:17

Sam,

0:14:170:14:19

have you seen John Frum?

0:14:190:14:21

No.

0:14:210:14:22

I didn't see him, but my brother here, he saw him.

0:14:220:14:26

What did John Frum say to your brother?

0:14:260:14:28

He didn't talk to him,

0:14:330:14:35

but he just went there at the meeting.

0:14:350:14:38

What kind of man is John Frum? Is he man blong Tanna,

0:14:390:14:44

or is he yellow man, like a Tonganese,

0:14:440:14:46

a white man, or what?

0:14:460:14:48

He is a white man.

0:14:480:14:49

- He's a white man? - Yeah.

0:14:490:14:51

And where did he come from?

0:14:510:14:53

I don't know.

0:14:540:14:56

Is he a big man or a small man?

0:14:560:14:58

He's a big man. Tall.

0:14:580:15:00

- A big, tall man? - Yeah.

0:15:000:15:01

How many people have seen John Frum?

0:15:010:15:03

Oh, more than 20 men.

0:15:030:15:05

- More than 20 men? - Yes.

0:15:050:15:07

When they make a meeting,

0:15:070:15:10

and he came to meet them...

0:15:100:15:13

he was sitting in between them,

0:15:130:15:16

and they was talking with him.

0:15:160:15:18

And will John Frum come again soon?

0:15:220:15:24

I don't know.

0:15:260:15:28

He promised them that day he would come.

0:15:280:15:32

But now we don't know when he's going to come.

0:15:320:15:36

What will happen when he comes?

0:15:370:15:39

I don't know.

0:15:430:15:44

Will it be good?

0:15:440:15:46

Yes. He said when he comes,

0:15:460:15:49

it will be a good living.

0:15:490:15:51

The men will be happy and get everything they want.

0:15:540:15:58

When John Frum first came...

0:15:580:16:01

..what happened?

0:16:020:16:04

What did he tell the people to do?

0:16:040:16:06

He tell the people to throw all their money.

0:16:080:16:11

- All their money? - All their money.

0:16:110:16:13

And he...

0:16:150:16:17

..told them to leave the school.

0:16:180:16:21

But now...

0:16:210:16:23

John Frum has told you to throw away your money?

0:16:230:16:27

And to...to kill your cattle?

0:16:280:16:32

So now the people of Tanna have no money and no cattle.

0:16:330:16:35

How do you live, then?

0:16:350:16:38

He said, by and by, when you can,

0:16:380:16:40

we can get everything we want.

0:16:400:16:43

Hmm.

0:16:430:16:44

But how long ago was this?

0:16:440:16:46

I don't know.

0:16:480:16:50

How long ago was it that he came and said this?

0:16:500:16:53

About, eh...

0:16:540:16:56

19 years, now.

0:16:560:16:58

- 19? - Yes.

0:16:580:16:59

Sam...

0:16:590:17:01

..you say John Frum has not come for 19 years.

0:17:030:17:06

Isn't this a long time for you to wait?

0:17:060:17:08

I can wait.

0:17:140:17:16

There's you waiting for 2,000 years

0:17:160:17:19

for Christ to come.

0:17:190:17:21

And I must wait over 19 years.

0:17:210:17:25

'It was a good point,

0:17:270:17:28

'but nonetheless, it was clear from what Sam had said,

0:17:280:17:30

'that he himself really knew very little about the origin of the cult.

0:17:300:17:35

'He told us later

0:17:350:17:36

'that the real leaders

0:17:360:17:37

'had their headquarters in the south of the island,

0:17:370:17:40

'at a village called Sulphur Bay,

0:17:400:17:41

'which stood on the flanks of the great volcano,

0:17:410:17:43

'whose threatening rumbles

0:17:430:17:45

'could be heard for many miles around.

0:17:450:17:47

'So we set out southwards,

0:17:470:17:49

'to try and find this stronghold of the cult.'

0:17:490:17:51

We passed many crosses on the way,

0:17:580:18:00

both large and small.

0:18:000:18:02

But as we approached Sulphur Bay,

0:18:020:18:04

we found the most extraordinary monument we had seen so far.

0:18:040:18:08

Standing by itself,

0:18:080:18:10

under its own thatched shelter.

0:18:100:18:12

On the right-hand side, there was a scarlet aeroplane,

0:18:140:18:17

perhaps that which will bring the cargo.

0:18:170:18:19

And on the other side,

0:18:190:18:21

a cage containing an extraordinary winged rat.

0:18:210:18:24

And in the centre, John Frum himself,

0:18:240:18:28

with a scarlet coat and a white European face.

0:18:280:18:31

They were pathetically childish images,

0:18:370:18:40

yet somehow they seemed to have a very sinister quality.

0:18:400:18:44

Scarlet gates were now as common by the roadside,

0:18:500:18:53

as were the scarlet crosses.

0:18:530:18:56

We were nearing Sulphur Bay.

0:18:560:18:57

At last, we emerged from the bush,

0:19:000:19:04

and drove out onto the wide ash plain

0:19:040:19:07

which surrounds the volcano.

0:19:070:19:08

Here there were more gates, and sticks, stuck in lines

0:19:130:19:16

across the barren ash.

0:19:160:19:18

Bob Paul had told me that a scarlet cross

0:19:420:19:45

had been erected on the topmost lip of the crater,

0:19:450:19:48

so we decided to climb the ash cone

0:19:480:19:49

and have a look at it.

0:19:490:19:51

The slopes up which we trudged

0:20:070:20:10

were composed of dry, grey volcanic dust

0:20:100:20:13

which had been spewed out from the crater,

0:20:130:20:15

and which settled on us in a fine powder,

0:20:150:20:18

out of the pall of smoke

0:20:180:20:20

which rose high in the air above our heads.

0:20:200:20:22

But the ascent wasn't difficult,

0:20:220:20:25

even though it was steep,

0:20:250:20:27

for the ash was so soft

0:20:270:20:28

that we could easily dig our toes into it.

0:20:280:20:31

VOLCANO ROARS

0:20:380:20:40

'The cross had once been painted scarlet,

0:20:450:20:48

'but much of the paint had been worn off by the wind

0:20:480:20:50

'and the sulphurous smoke

0:20:500:20:52

'which belched up from the crater 500 feet below.

0:20:520:20:56

'There were nine separate vents,

0:20:560:20:58

'each of which exploded at different times

0:20:580:21:01

'with such titanic force that huge lumps of red-hot lava

0:21:010:21:04

'were sometimes thrown 600 feet into the air.'

0:21:040:21:07

VENT EXPLODES

0:21:100:21:13

VENT EXPLODES

0:21:260:21:28

VENT EXPLODES

0:21:360:21:37

VENT EXPLODES

0:21:400:21:42

VENT EXPLODES

0:21:500:21:53

VENT EXPLODES

0:22:040:22:07

On the southern side of the volcano,

0:22:360:22:38

overshadowed by the huge clouds from the eruption,

0:22:380:22:42

we came to the village of Sulphur Bay.

0:22:420:22:44

'This was the critical moment.

0:22:530:22:55

'How would they receive me?

0:22:550:22:57

'If they were suspicious,

0:22:570:22:59

'or thought I was from the police,

0:22:590:23:01

'then I should learn nothing.'

0:23:010:23:03

INAUDIBLE

0:23:060:23:08

'The initial greetings seemed cordial enough.'

0:23:140:23:18

'But this was the important man -

0:23:240:23:26

'the head man, Nambas.

0:23:260:23:27

'I knew that he was the leader

0:23:270:23:29

'of the whole cargo cult.

0:23:290:23:31

'I explained to him

0:23:310:23:33

'that I wanted to learn about John Frum.

0:23:330:23:36

'Would he tell me about him?

0:23:360:23:38

'At first, he was a little unwilling.

0:23:380:23:41

'But, finally, he agreed to sit down and talk.

0:23:410:23:44

'Everyone gathered round to listen.'

0:23:460:23:49

Nambas...

0:23:490:23:52

Men tell me

0:23:520:23:54

that you have a radio.

0:23:540:23:56

John Frum has a radio. Is that right?

0:23:560:23:58

HE SPEAKS BISLAMA

0:23:580:24:00

Yes.

0:24:050:24:07

You have a special radio belonging to John Frum?

0:24:070:24:11

Yes.

0:24:110:24:12

John Frum. Right here.

0:24:120:24:13

And what does he say on this radio?

0:24:130:24:16

He speak you.

0:24:160:24:17

John Frum tells you on the radio that we will come?

0:24:170:24:22

Yes, he speak on the radio. He got too many cam...

0:24:220:24:26

A fast plane come, he got too many camera on board.

0:24:260:24:29

Me and Master Geoffrey?

0:24:290:24:32

He speak to me first time.

0:24:330:24:35

How long ago he tell you that we will come?

0:24:350:24:37

He been telling me a long time - two weeks. Over.

0:24:370:24:40

- Two weeks ago? - Yes.

0:24:400:24:42

And did he say what we would look like?

0:24:420:24:45

He says...

0:24:450:24:46

he got too many cameras on...

0:24:460:24:48

come with you, or look anything.

0:24:480:24:51

Red Cross... anything.

0:24:510:24:54

That's what he told me.

0:24:540:24:56

How do you know it is us that he was talking about?

0:24:560:24:59

Maybe they're two other men.

0:24:590:25:01

He been speaking two men will come.

0:25:010:25:03

Come a long way...

0:25:030:25:05

Do you hear it every night, or once a week?

0:25:050:25:08

Every night, every day, every night, every summer days.

0:25:080:25:12

Long morning days.

0:25:120:25:14

Especially if you want to ask him anything.

0:25:140:25:16

- He speaking. - On the radio?

0:25:160:25:18

Mm - on the radio.

0:25:180:25:20

Is the radio here in this village?

0:25:200:25:21

He no got none. Why? No got anything.

0:25:210:25:26

You don't have, like, a white man's radio?

0:25:280:25:31

He does not have to have one?

0:25:310:25:32

No have like a white man's radio.

0:25:320:25:34

'I pressed him further about the radio,

0:25:350:25:37

'but he was very evasive,

0:25:370:25:38

'so I dropped the subject,

0:25:380:25:39

'but I brought it up again the next day.'

0:25:390:25:41

And where is the radio?

0:25:410:25:44

It's in my place.

0:25:440:25:46

- In your house? - Yeah!

0:25:460:25:48

Is it possible for me to see?

0:25:480:25:49

Can I see the radio?

0:25:490:25:51

You can't see.

0:25:510:25:53

Can I see the house where the radio is?

0:25:530:25:55

No.

0:25:580:26:00

Why not?

0:26:000:26:02

Because my order, he not liking the white people.

0:26:020:26:05

I see.

0:26:050:26:07

Can I hear the radio?

0:26:070:26:08

No.

0:26:080:26:10

Because my order, he said no.

0:26:110:26:13

- Your order says no? - Yes.

0:26:130:26:15

But I think I hear of some white men

0:26:150:26:18

who hear about the radio?

0:26:180:26:19

No. No white men hear of that.

0:26:190:26:21

- No white men hear of it? - No.

0:26:210:26:23

Nambas, what does John Frum look like?

0:26:230:26:27

He can speak American.

0:26:270:26:31

He's American?

0:26:310:26:32

Is he a white man?

0:26:320:26:33

Yes, white.

0:26:330:26:34

He is white.

0:26:340:26:37

You've seen him?

0:26:370:26:38

Yes, I see him.

0:26:380:26:39

Do you hear John talk?

0:26:390:26:40

- Yes, he's so kind. - You shake hands with him?

0:26:400:26:42

He tell me, he got thrown down in Sulphur Bay.

0:26:420:26:46

Nambas,

0:26:460:26:48

you heard John talk,

0:26:480:26:50

- and you shook hands with him? -Yes.

0:26:500:26:52

Was this during the daytime or during the night-time?

0:26:520:26:55

At night-time, about seven o'clock.

0:26:550:26:57

- Was it dark? - Yes.

0:26:570:26:59

- Could you see John? - Yes, I see.

0:26:590:27:01

What does he look like?

0:27:010:27:03

Look like you.

0:27:030:27:04

- He looks like me? - Yeah.

0:27:040:27:05

Does he speak about cargo?

0:27:050:27:07

He speak about cargo.

0:27:070:27:09

What does he say about cargo?

0:27:090:27:10

He says you follow for John...

0:27:100:27:14

and maybe some time the cargo will come.

0:27:140:27:17

Maybe a boat.

0:27:170:27:20

An aeroplane?

0:27:200:27:21

Aeroplane.

0:27:210:27:22

- And they will bring the cargo? - Yeah.

0:27:220:27:24

And what will the cargo be?

0:27:240:27:27

Cargo be American.

0:27:270:27:28

- American cargo? - Yeah.

0:27:280:27:30

What sort of things will there be in the cargo?

0:27:300:27:34

Bringing everything

0:27:340:27:36

for every man.

0:27:360:27:38

He bring food,

0:27:380:27:40

or he bring icebox,

0:27:400:27:41

- or he bring...? - Anything.

0:27:410:27:44

- He bring cars? - Yes.

0:27:440:27:46

All the same as the white men have now?

0:27:470:27:51

Yes.

0:27:510:27:53

And will the cargo John brings come to the white men?

0:27:530:27:56

Come to...native boys.

0:27:570:28:01

Will the white men get any?

0:28:010:28:02

I don't know. He can't say the white man get it too because the white man,

0:28:020:28:06

he got it.

0:28:060:28:07

White man's got it? I see.

0:28:070:28:09

'And then, on the last day of our visit,

0:28:100:28:13

'Nambas said something which showed quite clearly

0:28:130:28:15

'that he was either a rogue or a madman.'

0:28:150:28:18

I see you've put a cross on the volcano.

0:28:180:28:21

Why do you put a cross there?

0:28:210:28:23

He got a man inside the volcano.

0:28:230:28:26

I look, see he got man inside.

0:28:270:28:29

- There's a man inside the volcano? - Yes.

0:28:290:28:31

Just one man or many men?

0:28:310:28:32

Many man.

0:28:320:28:34

- Many men? - Many man.

0:28:340:28:36

Men blong John Frum?

0:28:360:28:37

Yes.

0:28:370:28:39

What kind of men?

0:28:390:28:42

Kind man.

0:28:420:28:43

He's like white people, but different colour.

0:28:430:28:49

What colour - dark or yellow, or...?

0:28:490:28:52

- Red. - Red?

0:28:520:28:53

Red and white.

0:28:530:28:54

Red - just like the shirts you wear?

0:28:540:28:57

Are they...

0:28:570:29:00

Are they...soldiers?

0:29:000:29:03

Many soldiers there.

0:29:030:29:05

Many soldiers inside the volcano?

0:29:050:29:07

Yes.

0:29:070:29:09

Any other kind?

0:29:090:29:10

Yes. Some red colour and black colour.

0:29:100:29:13

Any sailors or airmen?

0:29:140:29:17

Every kind, stuck inside.

0:29:170:29:21

And that was the nearest answer I got to my questions about John Frum.

0:29:230:29:29

Perhaps Nambas was deluded,

0:29:290:29:31

but if he was,

0:29:310:29:33

then the whole of the population of Tanna is deluded.

0:29:330:29:36

And, anyway,

0:29:360:29:37

"delusion" is a rather odd word to use

0:29:370:29:39

when you're talking about religions.

0:29:390:29:41

Perhaps, too,

0:29:430:29:44

Tanna isn't our idea of a South Seas paradise -

0:29:440:29:50

it isn't my idea, either -

0:29:500:29:51

but when we left the New Hebrides,

0:29:510:29:53

we travelled another 500 miles eastwards

0:29:530:29:56

towards Fiji.

0:29:560:29:58

There, we did find blue lagoons and palm trees,

0:29:580:30:00

and paradise - but I'll tell you about that next time.
