This year's 11th It's My Shout Awards

0:00:030:00:06

was the best to date.

0:00:060:00:07

It premiered eight short films made by young people all over Wales.

0:00:070:00:11

Over 1,500 people including cast and crew, celebrities

0:00:130:00:16

and industry professionals attended the event

0:00:160:00:19

to honour the up-and-coming film-makers.

0:00:190:00:21

Over the last decade,

0:00:210:00:23

It's My Shout has proved itself as a training ground for young people

0:00:230:00:26

entering into film, television and theatre.

0:00:260:00:29

To date, over 900 people have since found work in the industry.

0:00:300:00:34

It's My Shout creator Roger Burnell

0:00:340:00:36

has watched the scheme grow from strength to strength

0:00:360:00:39

and still believes that the focus of the project

0:00:390:00:42

should be offering opportunities

0:00:420:00:44

to first-time scriptwriters, directors and young people.

0:00:440:00:47

It's important that we give people

0:00:520:00:54

the confidence to feel they've got a place in the industry

0:00:540:00:57

through basically giving them practical experiences.

0:00:570:01:01

Off set, the production office, with a mentor,

0:01:020:01:05

who can give them that confidence and, I suppose,

0:01:050:01:07

the self-esteem and belief that they can do something,

0:01:070:01:10

which is creative and exciting.

0:01:100:01:13

The scheme makes films all over Wales.

0:01:150:01:17

It looks to target areas

0:01:170:01:19

people often don't expect film talent to come from.

0:01:190:01:22

The importance of going into places like the Valleys

0:01:230:01:27

and to Pontypridd, my hometown, is that it isn't always

0:01:270:01:32

perceived as being something that people do, you know?

0:01:320:01:36

It's something, filming that is, that other people do.

0:01:370:01:40

What we try to do is engage with people to get them

0:01:400:01:44

to feel that they can find a role in the industry, if it's appropriate.

0:01:440:01:48

And that the Valleys is a rich hotbed of talent,

0:01:480:01:56

whether it's in front of or behind the camera.

0:01:560:02:00

Slate eight, take one.

0:02:000:02:02

This was the first year eight short films were made.

0:02:020:02:05

Six in English language for BBC Wales and, for the first time,

0:02:050:02:08

two Welsh-language films were made for S4C.

0:02:080:02:11

Stories ranged from the Senghenydd mining disaster to

0:02:110:02:14

a bilingual bank robbery.

0:02:140:02:17

This programme follows three people who took part in one of the films.

0:02:170:02:21

Now Or Never is based on the Elvis Festival in Porthcawl.

0:02:210:02:25

# It's now or never... #

0:02:250:02:29

The film is directed by Lawrence Fowler

0:02:290:02:32

and was written by Nick Grantham.

0:02:320:02:34

It follows a father and daughter who travelled to Porthcawl

0:02:340:02:37

to compete in the Elvis Tribute Festival.

0:02:370:02:39

Now or never is a coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old girl, who,

0:02:420:02:45

every year, along with her father, performs at the Elvis Festival.

0:02:450:02:49

This year, she feels she is kind of growing out of it,

0:02:490:02:52

she feels, and she's trying to basically build the courage to

0:02:520:02:56

tell her father that she no longer wants to perform.

0:02:560:02:58

Action.

0:03:000:03:01

I'm trying to capture what the script captures.

0:03:010:03:03

It's a really nice balance of drama and comedy.

0:03:030:03:06

I think whenever you think of Elvis, the Elvis Festival, you picture

0:03:060:03:10

vibrant colours and an exciting, hopefully, ten-minute enjoyable film.

0:03:100:03:15

The lead actress was from the Rhondda.

0:03:160:03:18

After performing in youth theatre,

0:03:180:03:20

she jumped at the opportunity to work in film.

0:03:200:03:23

My name's Becky Owen,

0:03:230:03:24

I'm 16 years old and I'm from Ynyswen in the Rhondda.

0:03:240:03:28

Becky had to go through a rigorous audition process which is

0:03:280:03:31

held for every It's My Shout film.

0:03:310:03:33

The audition, for me, was a bit hard at the start

0:03:330:03:35

because I was really ill for the first edition,

0:03:350:03:39

so I couldn't make it.

0:03:390:03:40

I had my mother to put my name down and see how well I got on from that.

0:03:400:03:46

And then I had another call back.

0:03:460:03:48

Becky auditioned at BBC Wales alongside hundreds of other

0:03:480:03:51

hopefuls and immediately impressed the director.

0:03:510:03:54

-He's been looking forward to it all year.

-He'll be OK.

0:03:540:03:57

I only had a few tears when I told him

0:03:580:04:00

and your situation isn't exactly the same.

0:04:000:04:02

When we first auditioned Rebecca,

0:04:020:04:04

we knew she was really good for the role.

0:04:040:04:06

She had the look, she was very talented as an actress

0:04:060:04:09

and, again, she was very co-operative with me.

0:04:090:04:13

Anything I threw at her in terms of ideas, she smiled and went, "Yep."

0:04:130:04:18

And she pulled it off.

0:04:180:04:19

Her mother, Victoria, had never acted before.

0:04:190:04:22

She was shocked when asked to try out for a role in the film.

0:04:220:04:25

There wasn't a lot of adult auditionees there

0:04:250:04:29

and they just asked me, "Would you be interested in auditioning?"

0:04:290:04:32

I was like, "I've never done anything like this." Really nervous.

0:04:320:04:35

The family didn't hear anything

0:04:350:04:37

for a few weeks, until they had a call when they were out shopping.

0:04:370:04:40

We were in the middle of Tesco's with some knickers in one hand,

0:04:400:04:44

bras in the other hand, mobile phone goes and they said that

0:04:440:04:50

I had the part of Grace and I just replied, "You're having a laugh!"

0:04:500:04:55

And then they said that Rebecca had the part of Anwyn, so I let out

0:04:550:05:00

a big scream and got some funny looks from people in Tesco's.

0:05:000:05:05

Then when I told Rebecca the news, she gave a scream, as well,

0:05:050:05:08

so we had a second look, as well.

0:05:080:05:11

Each film is made exactly like a feature film

0:05:110:05:13

and includes all departments.

0:05:130:05:16

One of the trainee sound operators was picked from the Rhymni Valley.

0:05:160:05:19

My name is Luke Walters, I'm 19 years old

0:05:190:05:22

and I live in a small village in the Rhymni Valley called Pontlottyn.

0:05:220:05:26

It's a village with a very tiny community, to be honest.

0:05:260:05:29

Everyone knows everyone. It's a nice place to be.

0:05:290:05:32

It's quiet because the age range is basically 40 plus.

0:05:320:05:36

There's not that many youngsters here, which makes it a nice place

0:05:360:05:40

to grow up because there's no trouble, really.

0:05:400:05:42

As well as being interested in film,

0:05:420:05:45

Luke has an unusual hobby. Wrestling.

0:05:450:05:47

Boys and girls, if it's a wrestler you like, you've got to cheer!

0:05:470:05:50

If it's a wrestler you hate, you've got to boo,

0:05:500:05:53

you've got to make some noise.

0:05:530:05:55

There's only one thing for me to say.

0:05:550:05:57

Let's get ready to rumble!

0:05:570:06:00

My main hobby and biggest interest would be wrestling.

0:06:050:06:09

When I hit about 11, I had a mad love of wrestling.

0:06:090:06:14

My teacher said to me, she said, "You may as well leave it

0:06:140:06:16

"because you're never going to be a wrestler, so what's the point?"

0:06:160:06:19

And, now look.

0:06:190:06:21

Wrestling is all showmanship.

0:06:250:06:28

You have to know where your audience is, what things you're going to do

0:06:280:06:31

for your audience and how to get yourself over.

0:06:310:06:35

You have to know your audience, know what's going to happen

0:06:350:06:39

and you have to get that over to the audience.

0:06:390:06:41

That's where I think the similarities are, to be honest.

0:06:410:06:45

Oh! Oh! Oh!

0:06:450:06:49

Although Luke appears on stage as a wrestler,

0:06:550:06:58

performance doesn't really run in the family.

0:06:580:07:00

One exception is his granddad, who was part of a Valleys band

0:07:000:07:03

in the '70s.

0:07:030:07:04

The media side does not run in my family at all.

0:07:040:07:08

The furthest we got that was loosely connected would be my grandfather

0:07:080:07:12

and that would be years ago, when he was going round

0:07:120:07:17

the pubs and clubs in the '70s as part of a band and a singer.

0:07:170:07:21

He recorded his own record. That's it, basically.

0:07:210:07:24

It kind of popped up out of nowhere.

0:07:240:07:27

All my family are labourers, painter and decorators

0:07:270:07:31

and there's me who's slightly creative.

0:07:310:07:33

Film-making was kind of like an accident.

0:07:330:07:37

I got bored one day with a camera and all my mates and thought,

0:07:370:07:42

let's give film-making a go. I was proper up for it, like.

0:07:420:07:46

They all dropped it after we made one short film

0:07:460:07:48

when we were about 13 or 14 and I loved it and I kept on.

0:07:480:07:53

The art department's role is designing and dressing

0:07:530:07:55

the various locations.

0:07:550:07:57

Working with a script, the producer and director,

0:07:570:07:59

they help create the look.

0:07:590:08:01

Our third trainee is also from the Rhondda Valley.

0:08:020:08:05

Woo!

0:08:080:08:10

I'm Lucy Robertson, I'm 19 and I'm from Gelli in the Rhondda Valleys.

0:08:100:08:14

My hobbies are mountain biking, that's my main hobby.

0:08:170:08:21

I've been doing it now for two years.

0:08:210:08:23

I go everywhere mountain biking. It's a big part of my life.

0:08:250:08:29

Lucy lives with her grandma, who has always encouraged her love of art.

0:08:290:08:33

I definitely feel, growing up in this house, I've been

0:08:330:08:36

surrounded by art all my life, so my grandmother is a brilliant artist

0:08:360:08:41

so that's where I get my artistic side, as well.

0:08:410:08:46

I've always found art is quite therapeutic, isn't it?

0:08:460:08:50

In so many different ways.

0:08:500:08:52

Lucy has been lucky because she's loved music,

0:08:520:08:56

she's loved every aspect of the arts.

0:08:560:08:59

We've tried to introduce her to everything.

0:08:590:09:01

She didn't really enjoy school but was interested in art

0:09:010:09:04

and prop making.

0:09:040:09:06

She contacted Roger Burnell to get involved with It's My Shout.

0:09:060:09:09

I got in contact with Roger.

0:09:090:09:11

I send this e-mail, I don't know what I was saying in this e-mail,

0:09:110:09:14

it's probably so embarrassing to look back now, but I was basically

0:09:140:09:17

saying, could you just give me a chance to prove myself, show myself?

0:09:170:09:25

He invited me down to the office and then we just got talking.

0:09:250:09:29

I think he wanted to see what I was about, really.

0:09:290:09:32

I don't think I made it clear in my e-mail.

0:09:320:09:34

I'm terrible at that sort of stuff but I think he could see that

0:09:340:09:39

I was enthusiastic and I was quite passionate about what I did.

0:09:390:09:45

She designed the props for Now Or Never.

0:09:450:09:47

One scene called for quirky Elvis garden gnomes.

0:09:470:09:50

I've been making these Elvis gnomes for the character's

0:09:500:09:54

front garden, just to give that bit of charm in the script,

0:09:540:09:59

that bit of comedy.

0:09:590:10:01

Day one of filming saw Lucy's gnomes take pride of place on set.

0:10:010:10:05

All three trainees came together for filming on location in Aberdare.

0:10:060:10:10

And, action.

0:10:100:10:12

# It's now or never...#

0:10:160:10:19

Today is our day.

0:10:210:10:24

Lucy worked to dress the set,

0:10:280:10:32

Luke took to working on the sound mixer and boom

0:10:320:10:36

and Becky acted alongside her mother as her character, Anwyn,

0:10:360:10:40

set off for the Elvis Festival with her father.

0:10:400:10:43

-The little hand says?

-It's time to rock'n'roll.

0:10:430:10:46

It's been the first day on set today. It's been absolutely amazing.

0:10:460:10:49

I've really enjoyed myself.

0:10:490:10:51

Everyone's been really friendly and gave me a lot of confidence

0:10:510:10:56

and just said, "Just go with the flow," really.

0:10:560:10:58

It's been a really good experience for me, as well.

0:10:580:11:01

I think everything has gone quite well for me today,

0:11:010:11:03

better than I expected to be, because as soon as I come on set

0:11:030:11:09

I thought, oh, gosh, I'm really nervous,

0:11:090:11:11

and I thought I'd mess up a lot,

0:11:110:11:13

but I think everything has gone smoothly today.

0:11:130:11:17

It's best to get it over and done with.

0:11:170:11:19

-Like ripping off a plaster.

-Come on!

0:11:190:11:22

CAR HORN BEEPS

0:11:220:11:25

A really stuck-on plaster.

0:11:250:11:26

It's been absolutely brilliant.

0:11:290:11:32

Everybody has been absolutely amazing, haven't they?

0:11:320:11:34

Just made us feel really at home,

0:11:340:11:36

because I was really nervous this morning and couldn't eat

0:11:360:11:39

and felt sick this morning, but, yes,

0:11:390:11:40

it's been really, really amazing.

0:11:400:11:42

It's quite surreal waiting all this time

0:11:420:11:44

and then it's actually finally here but, yes, it's been a really,

0:11:440:11:47

really good experience and obviously working with Becky

0:11:470:11:51

has made it even more special.

0:11:510:11:53

It's been really good, hasn't it?

0:11:530:11:55

I think the next two days are going to be amazing.

0:11:570:11:59

Just like this one, I think. I'm going to have a lot of experience

0:11:590:12:02

out of the whole weekend, filming.

0:12:020:12:04

I'm just going to take a lot back with me

0:12:040:12:06

and actually be able to just go out there and just be myself, really,

0:12:060:12:11

and just see how far I go with filming

0:12:110:12:13

and just doing what I love doing, really.

0:12:130:12:17

THEY LAUGH

0:12:170:12:19

I don't think I have got a favourite part of the day.

0:12:200:12:23

Everything's been really good and it's just made me happy.

0:12:230:12:27

Really exciting.

0:12:270:12:29

Just can't wait for the rest of the weekend now.

0:12:290:12:32

The second day of filming took place on the Porthcawl seafront.

0:12:320:12:36

Based loosely on the Elvis Festival that takes place here every year,

0:12:370:12:41

it was the perfect location for filming Now Or Ever.

0:12:410:12:45

Extras were brought onto the set to create the festival feel.

0:12:450:12:49

# I'm all shook up... #

0:12:490:12:52

Working outside in a noisy location presented a number of tricky

0:12:520:12:56

sound issues for Luke.

0:12:560:12:59

All trainees are paired with mentors who guide them.

0:12:590:13:02

Luke was mentored by Nigel Tidball,

0:13:020:13:04

a drama and documentary sound recordist.

0:13:040:13:08

# I'll all shook up. #

0:13:090:13:10

Slate 16, take one.

0:13:100:13:11

Being on set is actually what I thought it would be like.

0:13:110:13:14

It's a very productive environment, to be honest.

0:13:140:13:17

Everyone's eager to get the job done

0:13:170:13:18

and just progress on with the film, really.

0:13:180:13:20

So, yeah, I expect it to be like this.

0:13:200:13:22

It's different being behind the camera for a change

0:13:220:13:25

but it's all good, really.

0:13:250:13:26

It's been great working with Nigel, he's a really great mentor,

0:13:260:13:29

very hands-on. Shows you what to do and just gets you straight in there.

0:13:290:13:34

He showed me how to work a sound mixer,

0:13:340:13:37

how to rig a boom, and just left us to it, really.

0:13:370:13:40

It's a great learning experience for me, to be with such a great mentor.

0:13:400:13:43

You know, you can leave it.

0:13:430:13:46

I reckon the setting will be there

0:13:460:13:47

but unless a heavy lorry or a motorbike...

0:13:470:13:50

-Yeah.

-That's lovely, that type of level.

0:13:500:13:53

Just to check that they've connected.

0:13:530:13:56

Yeah.

0:13:560:13:57

So far it's going great. I operated the boom first

0:13:570:14:02

and yesterday as well. Does hurt the arms a bit

0:14:020:14:05

but now I'm on the sound mixer, so it's all good, really.

0:14:050:14:09

Working in the sound department doesn't just involve holding a boom.

0:14:090:14:13

Sound levels have to be monitored, which can prove tricky

0:14:130:14:16

when working outside.

0:14:160:14:17

I didn't think they'd have a sound mixer on set.

0:14:170:14:20

I just through it would be a straight boom but it's good to learn

0:14:200:14:22

different aspects of the sound department, to be honest.

0:14:220:14:25

Augie, Augie, Augie!

0:14:250:14:27

Lucy had the difficult job of recreating the look

0:14:280:14:32

and feel of an Elvis Festival.

0:14:320:14:34

She set up the location to look as though acts were arriving,

0:14:340:14:37

ready for competition.

0:14:370:14:38

Today we've been putting the banner up on the Grand Pavilion

0:14:400:14:44

to show the Elvis festival theme going on.

0:14:440:14:47

And we've also put posters as well outside the Grand Pavilion

0:14:470:14:51

and just put them in a casing, just to get that feel of a competition,

0:14:510:14:55

so that's mainly what we've been doing today.

0:14:550:14:58

Her mentor was experienced art director Nick Burnell.

0:14:580:15:02

He has worked all over the world and was happy to offer Lucy advice.

0:15:020:15:06

Nick...I couldn't have done anything without Nick.

0:15:060:15:09

He's really, really helped me throughout.

0:15:090:15:12

I'm learning daily, like, even hourly with Nick.

0:15:120:15:15

He's really pushing me to learn and he's really pushing me

0:15:150:15:18

just to get out there, really,

0:15:180:15:19

and just get stuck in, which I struggled with at the start.

0:15:190:15:23

But he's given me a lot of confidence to get in there

0:15:230:15:25

and just start learning.

0:15:250:15:28

I love it.

0:15:280:15:29

I never thought I'd enjoy it this much.

0:15:290:15:33

I'm enjoying every aspect of it.

0:15:330:15:35

Even when we're waiting around I'm still learning,

0:15:350:15:38

I'm still picking up things off other people so I'm really enjoying it.

0:15:380:15:42

And...action!

0:15:420:15:44

This part of the film had focused on Becky's character, Anwen,

0:15:440:15:47

and her father arriving ready for the competition.

0:15:470:15:50

But Lucy had to think ahead about the third day.

0:15:500:15:54

Tomorrow... I'm quite nervous for tomorrow, actually.

0:15:540:15:57

The registration hall I think is going to be the biggest challenge.

0:15:570:16:01

Just because we have to make it look as if it's nice and fresh

0:16:010:16:06

and new, and then the next scene is to do with everyone's gone to

0:16:060:16:10

the actual festival and they've left this room in a state.

0:16:100:16:13

So trying to get that transition is going to be quite tough,

0:16:130:16:17

I think, but I'm excited.

0:16:170:16:19

# To have the girl that I love so fine... #

0:16:190:16:22

On the final day, Lucy's first big challenge was to make sure

0:16:220:16:26

the registration room was properly set up for competition.

0:16:260:16:29

And with all the Elvises on set she was preparing for a busy time.

0:16:290:16:34

You know what, I'm quite looking... I'm proud of this.

0:16:340:16:37

I think this is quite convincing.

0:16:370:16:39

This is what I imagined and even more, to be honest.

0:16:390:16:42

But I'm really looking forward to setting up the stage downstairs,

0:16:420:16:45

the main stage, cos I think that

0:16:450:16:46

we're going to have a bit of fun with that.

0:16:460:16:48

Going to try and make it look intense and get the lighting right and just

0:16:480:16:52

make sure everything is set up like you would in a rock'n'roll concert.

0:16:520:16:56

So think that's going to be my favourite bit.

0:16:560:16:58

I'm waiting for it.

0:16:580:17:00

As she built up to the last scene,

0:17:010:17:04

Lucy reflected on what she had learned from the experience so far.

0:17:040:17:07

From day one to now I have learned more than I ever thought I'd learn.

0:17:080:17:14

This is completely different to what I thought it would be.

0:17:140:17:17

It's better than what I thought it would be as well.

0:17:170:17:20

I know that might sound a bit...but I really, thoroughly enjoyed this.

0:17:200:17:25

And through doing this I just know I want to do this in the future

0:17:250:17:29

as well, so it's been a really, really good experience.

0:17:290:17:33

And I'm so glad I've done it.

0:17:330:17:35

Take one, guide track.

0:17:350:17:37

The final day also encouraged Luke

0:17:370:17:39

to reflect on his experience in the sound department.

0:17:390:17:42

The most interesting part of the three days is actually working

0:17:420:17:44

with Nigel and learning about the different aspects of sound

0:17:440:17:48

and different characters in the sound and learning the sound mixer,

0:17:480:17:52

cos I've never been in the sound department.

0:17:520:17:54

I was standing with a boom in behind the Steadicam,

0:17:540:17:56

so it's all good, really.

0:17:560:17:59

Although he learned a lot over the three days,

0:17:590:18:01

day two proved to be his biggest challenge.

0:18:010:18:05

My favourite scene in the film over the last three days would have

0:18:050:18:07

to be the promenade scene with the two characters walking and talking.

0:18:070:18:11

Because we couldn't get the boom in right,

0:18:110:18:13

I had to jump up on a bench and go right on top and get over

0:18:130:18:17

and it was windy and it was starting to rain so I was getting battered

0:18:170:18:20

and nearly went with the boom. It's quite funny for me

0:18:200:18:23

but it was hard to hold on, but that was my favourite scene, to be honest.

0:18:230:18:27

Action!

0:18:270:18:28

So what is it about Elvis that makes you come back every year?

0:18:280:18:31

Well, it was what he represented.

0:18:310:18:34

Now Or Never is a coming-of-age film.

0:18:340:18:37

In her final scene, Becky's character had to tell her father

0:18:370:18:40

that she no longer wanted them to perform together.

0:18:400:18:44

It was the climax of what had been a demanding three days.

0:18:440:18:48

I feel really...

0:18:480:18:51

emotional, I think

0:18:510:18:52

because it's the last day. I think it's really exciting this weekend.

0:18:520:18:56

But it's just all coming to an end now.

0:18:560:18:59

So it's really sad.

0:18:590:19:02

Stand by.

0:19:020:19:04

And...action!

0:19:040:19:05

Working with everyone has been really good.

0:19:050:19:09

Working with the director's been really good.

0:19:090:19:12

Given really good directions

0:19:120:19:14

and comes across as a really lovely person as well.

0:19:140:19:17

I've got to know him a lot.

0:19:170:19:19

It's really good.

0:19:190:19:21

For the director, Laurence, the whole process culminated

0:19:230:19:26

in the father and daughter's final performance on stage.

0:19:260:19:30

I think I'm most looking forward to the last scene.

0:19:300:19:34

Where she said she wants to go solo instead of doing it with her dad.

0:19:340:19:38

So I think that's the most exciting part for me.

0:19:380:19:42

# Maybe I didn't hold you

0:19:420:19:44

# All those lonely, lonely times

0:19:460:19:49

# And I guess I never told you

0:19:500:19:53

# I'm so happy that you're mine

0:19:540:19:57

So, how did the three trainees find working on the film?

0:20:090:20:12

The experience for It's My Shout has been incredible.

0:20:120:20:15

I mean, I came in, like, really nervous at the start.

0:20:150:20:18

And I've just come out a totally different person.

0:20:180:20:20

Taken back a lot of experience from It's My Shout

0:20:200:20:23

and meeting a lot of people, welcoming...

0:20:230:20:27

It's just been really good.

0:20:270:20:29

THEY CHATTER

0:20:290:20:31

I think it's built my confidence up a lot.

0:20:310:20:33

So I'm really thankful for getting a part.

0:20:330:20:37

I think It's My Shout will help me in lots of different ways,

0:20:370:20:41

because now I'm going into university,

0:20:410:20:43

I'll be going into different aspects of media.

0:20:430:20:45

And sound's one I've already dabbled in with Nigel in It's My Shout,

0:20:450:20:48

so at least I'll have, like, a foot in the door.

0:20:480:20:51

You get put in this natural work environment.

0:20:510:20:54

You get to see all different departments doing their thing.

0:20:540:20:58

And you never know, maybe one department might

0:20:580:21:00

stand out for you, which you want to pursue or...

0:21:000:21:02

You just get to see all different sides of it.

0:21:020:21:04

And I think it really helps you find what angle

0:21:040:21:07

and which way you want to go.

0:21:070:21:10

If I had to use one word to sum up this whole experience,

0:21:100:21:13

I don't know, I think there's a million words to describe it!

0:21:130:21:16

But it's been fantastic. It's been amazing.

0:21:160:21:18

Two months after filming, and all eight films were premiered

0:21:230:21:26

to a packed audience in the Wales Millennium Centre.

0:21:260:21:29

Guests of all ages arrived on the red carpet,

0:21:320:21:35

as a wide variety of entertainment welcomed them to the event.

0:21:350:21:39

Becky, Lucy and Luke were all nominated for awards

0:21:440:21:47

for their work on Now Or Never.

0:21:470:21:50

# And when she dances, oh, brother!

0:21:500:21:52

# She's a hurricane in all kinds of weather... #

0:21:520:21:56

Cast and crew, industry professionals

0:21:560:21:58

and VIPs attended the event to view the films

0:21:580:22:01

produced by It's My Shout and see the young Welsh talent in action.

0:22:010:22:06

After the audience took to their seats,

0:22:100:22:12

the director of BBC Cymru Wales, Rhodri Talfan Davies,

0:22:120:22:16

opened the night by emphasising the importance

0:22:160:22:19

of helping young talent in Wales.

0:22:190:22:21

APPLAUSE

0:22:210:22:23

It's My Shout matters.

0:22:260:22:28

I sometimes hear people say rather glibly that real talent will

0:22:280:22:33

always win out. The cream always rises to the top.

0:22:330:22:37

Well, I tell you, it doesn't always happen like that. Far from it.

0:22:370:22:41

And if we're serious in Wales about unearthing future talent,

0:22:410:22:44

we have to provide opportunities for those young stars

0:22:440:22:47

of the future to find their feet.

0:22:470:22:50

We have to provide opportunities for them to succeed, sometimes to fail.

0:22:500:22:53

And to learn from both of those experiences.

0:22:530:22:56

And those of us who've been lucky enough to live in this world

0:22:560:22:59

have to reach out and share what we know.

0:22:590:23:02

And that's why, for me, It's My Shout matters.

0:23:020:23:06

The awards were presented to the best trainees

0:23:060:23:08

from the different departments.

0:23:080:23:10

Including one for the best sound trainee.

0:23:100:23:13

And the award goes to Luke Walters!

0:23:130:23:16

APPLAUSE

0:23:160:23:18

MUSIC PLAYS

0:23:200:23:22

Luke was almost speechless upon accepting his award.

0:23:260:23:30

All right? Thank you! Good night!

0:23:300:23:34

LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE

0:23:340:23:36

Yeah, it caught me a bit off guard, to be honest.

0:23:360:23:39

I just sat there, I didn't expect it.

0:23:390:23:40

I just sat there and they read my name out and I was like,

0:23:400:23:43

"Ah. Oh, that's me!"

0:23:430:23:45

So I went up on stage and I just couldn't believe it.

0:23:450:23:48

I didn't expect it. Amazing. Shaking a bit, like.

0:23:480:23:52

It's great, so happy to win one.

0:23:520:23:54

The First Minister, Carwyn Jones,

0:23:540:23:56

then presented the night's special award.

0:23:560:23:59

Mr Carwyn Jones...

0:23:590:24:00

APPLAUSE

0:24:000:24:02

So it's my great pleasure this evening to present

0:24:050:24:08

the It's My Shout Made In Wales Inspiration Award to Rob Brydon!

0:24:080:24:13

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:24:130:24:15

It's also particularly lovely to receive this

0:24:220:24:25

and to be here at It's My Shout, because you may not know,

0:24:250:24:29

but Roger Burnell is really the first part

0:24:290:24:32

of my story as to how I end up here.

0:24:320:24:35

Because he was my drama teacher at Porthcawl Comprehensive

0:24:350:24:39

when I went there in...

0:24:390:24:42

I was at school in Swansea and then we moved to Porthcawl,

0:24:420:24:45

going up in the world!

0:24:450:24:47

And I went to the comp and I didn't know anybody.

0:24:470:24:52

And I remember the headmaster saying, "Well, we have..."

0:24:520:24:55

Mr Ebsworth, his name was. He's still with us, I believe.

0:24:550:24:59

Not here tonight, but...

0:24:590:25:01

LAUGHTER

0:25:010:25:02

And he said, "Well, we have a drama department here

0:25:020:25:06

"that put on very good productions." This is how he talked.

0:25:060:25:11

And they were doing West Side Story.

0:25:110:25:12

And I got a part in that as one of the Jets.

0:25:120:25:15

And that was where I met Roger and he was the man who encouraged me

0:25:150:25:20

and gave me...

0:25:200:25:21

I think what he does is he gives people fantastic self-belief.

0:25:210:25:25

And as an actor that's something you need

0:25:250:25:28

at the beginning of your career when you're starting out.

0:25:280:25:31

And, believe me, you need it all the way.

0:25:310:25:35

APPLAUSE

0:25:350:25:36

The First Minister then closed the ceremony with a speech that

0:25:360:25:39

focused on developing the next generation of talent.

0:25:390:25:43

So all I'm going to say to you this evening is this. Follow your dreams.

0:25:430:25:48

Use your talent. Don't let anybody say to you you can't do it.

0:25:480:25:52

And never, ever give up. Rob's an example of that. Never, ever give up.

0:25:520:25:55

Because if you've got the talent, you've got the dedication,

0:25:550:25:58

you've got the hard work inside you, you will succeed.

0:25:580:26:01

And when you succeed, think of all you've done this evening

0:26:010:26:04

and think that tonight was the start of a great career for yourselves.

0:26:040:26:09

Think of what this opportunity this evening gave you.

0:26:090:26:12

And I'm sure that within this hall this evening

0:26:120:26:15

we will have talent that will grace the TV screens, the radio,

0:26:150:26:18

the stages of Wales and the wider world for many, many years to come.

0:26:180:26:23

The best of luck to you all.

0:26:230:26:25

Keep on going, and make sure that what you've picked up this evening,

0:26:250:26:29

you use that in many, many years to come.

0:26:290:26:31

Follow your dreams.

0:26:310:26:33

APPLAUSE

0:26:330:26:34

This year, the films have been fantastic

0:26:360:26:39

and have been very well received.

0:26:390:26:42

And I think, in those terms, it's even more important

0:26:420:26:45

that the talent does get nurtured and developed.

0:26:450:26:49

And we hope to look for projects and identify ways in which

0:26:490:26:56

we could progress that talent. Yeah, hugely exciting.

0:26:560:27:00

And massively encouraging for us as well, that, you know,

0:27:000:27:04

this talent continues to come through.
