Lovely, thank you very much, hello and welcome to the National Lottery

:01:10.:01:14.

Awards, a very special event here on the South Bank in association

:01:14.:01:18.

with the Telegraph, where tonight we are crowning seven worthy

:01:18.:01:21.

winners from projects that do amazing work throughout the UK. We

:01:21.:01:25.

will also be bringing you tonight some very special Lotto superdraw

:01:25.:01:34.

at the end of the show, as well as the Thunderball. We have an

:01:34.:01:37.

exclusive performance from one of the hottest bands in the country,

:01:38.:01:40.

The Wanted will be here. I thought you would like that. Oh

:01:40.:01:46.

yeah. Since the lottery began in 1994,

:01:46.:01:53.

over 26 billion has been raised for good causes. Funding over

:01:53.:01:58.

370,000 projects. Lottery money has made a huge impact on the 2012

:01:58.:02:03.

Olympic and Paralympic games, with contributions hitting 2.2 billion.

:02:03.:02:07.

This year 22 projects have been nominated for awards, remember, all

:02:07.:02:10.

of them have been funded by National Lottery players. Who,

:02:10.:02:15.

raise over 30 million every week. Over the past few months you at

:02:15.:02:18.

home have been voting for your winners. Your votes have been

:02:18.:02:20.

counted and verified by the National Lottery, and this evening

:02:20.:02:24.

we will be announcing the seven projects that will be walkk away

:02:24.:02:31.

with the awards. - walking away with the awards. Time for the first

:02:31.:02:35.

catagory, it is the award for Best Health Project.

:02:35.:02:40.

To present it, please welcome a woman, act stress, comedian,

:02:40.:02:46.

trained psychologist and a ballroom dancer, she is far too talented for

:02:46.:02:56.
:02:56.:03:03.

one person, she is the incredible Good evening, the work of the

:03:03.:03:07.

nominees in this catagory make a huge difference to people across

:03:07.:03:13.

the country, from health champions in Yorkshire and the Humber, to the

:03:13.:03:18.

parents of deaf-blind children in Scotland and ex-soldiers on the

:03:18.:03:22.

Cornish coast, all three projects are using innovative ways to help

:03:22.:03:26.

people lead healthier, happier lives. Let's take a look at the

:03:26.:03:34.

Surf Action helps ex-servicemen who may have been injured or suffering

:03:34.:03:38.

from post-traumatic stress, to regain confidence in themselves.

:03:38.:03:43.

take them surfing, get them in the sea and smiling and laughing and

:03:43.:03:47.

happy again. I used to be in the Royal Navy, I now get flashbacks

:03:47.:03:51.

and I don't get to sleep properly. It does affect me. Every week I

:03:51.:03:57.

look forward to Friday, coming down here, and it's great. What Surf

:03:57.:04:02.

Action does, it makes a difference in terms of giving them a focus and

:04:02.:04:07.

moving people forward. Altogether Better Programme train volunteers

:04:07.:04:12.

to help and provote people in their local community. Community health

:04:12.:04:15.

champions are made up of people from all different backgrounds.

:04:15.:04:18.

They all have a passion and belief in supporting people in common, and

:04:18.:04:21.

giving something back to their communities. I was asked if I would

:04:21.:04:25.

like to become a volunteer and health champion. It is only since

:04:25.:04:29.

then that I have really learned what an health champion does.

:04:29.:04:34.

who is my health champion, put me on the right road. I was 23 stone,

:04:34.:04:39.

now I'm 15.5 stone. I never looked back since. What I do, I like to go

:04:39.:04:43.

out into the community, get to people like Doug, get them vowed,

:04:43.:04:48.

try to get them to the eat well courses and things like that.

:04:49.:04:52.

healthier, I'm eating better, my outlook on life is a totally

:04:52.:04:57.

different thing. It makes you feel really good and proud of what you

:04:57.:05:03.

done. Sense run several projects for deaf, blind and disabled people.

:05:03.:05:06.

It is all about taking down the barriers for people who have

:05:06.:05:10.

disability on a daily basis. are constantly analysing the

:05:10.:05:15.

benefits people get from, whether it is wood craft or drama, or music.

:05:15.:05:20.

If this wasn't here for me, I would probably feel quite disappointed.

:05:20.:05:23.

It is amazing the developments you see in a child, the benefits are

:05:23.:05:33.
:05:33.:06:11.

massive and endless. Thank you to all the wonderful

:06:11.:06:15.

supporters who voted for us. Thanks also to National Lottery funding,

:06:15.:06:25.
:06:25.:06:30.

you have really made Sense Scotland fantastic place to be. Thank you.

:06:30.:06:34.

Now, our second catagory is the award for Best Environment Project,

:06:34.:06:38.

to present it, two people who spend their time in one of the most

:06:38.:06:42.

recognised places in the country. Please welcome Albert's Syntagma

:07:00.:07:05.

lovely, looking lovely, wall Ford isn't exactly a shining example of

:07:05.:07:08.

a healthy and happy environment, far from it. It makes you realise

:07:08.:07:11.

how important it is to look after the world around you, and how

:07:11.:07:14.

important it is to protect it. all three projects nominated

:07:14.:07:18.

tonight are making use of the people and resources around them to

:07:18.:07:21.

make a difference. A difference that will have lasting effects.

:07:21.:07:31.
:07:31.:07:32.

Let's take a look. Green has been transformed from a -

:07:32.:07:37.

Green Valley has been transformed into a community place. We have

:07:37.:07:41.

tried to make it a place where people can enjoy the environment

:07:41.:07:44.

and get practical skills. I have come down and volunteered and done

:07:44.:07:48.

a bit of training, and Andy took me on as a full-time member of staff.

:07:48.:07:54.

It is brilliant. We just started a local food box scheme, a variety of

:07:54.:07:57.

local vegtables, we deliver to their door. It provide as lot of

:07:58.:08:02.

benefit, and helps promote the project in the community. OPAL

nature around them You are involving members of the public and

:08:09.:08:13.

volunteers in collecting scientific data, telling us about the

:08:13.:08:17.

environment in England. We need to know where wildlife is, so that we

:08:17.:08:23.

can monitor it, and then learn to protect T I have learned that there

:08:23.:08:28.

is lots of species of bugs. It is a really good way for younger

:08:28.:08:32.

children to start off with a love for nature early on. To realise

:08:33.:08:38.

every little patch of long grass is sheltering some cool little

invertebra, people get a lot out of that. Brighter Future Workshop

:08:53.:08:58.

good about themselves. Today we have recycled over 6,000 pieces of

not only the people of the area but the people of Wales, hurray. The

Green Valley Project, supported by lottery funding, it is not just

all our staff and volunteers along the way, and of course, a massive

thank you to everybody that voted for us.

:10:23.:10:33.
:10:33.:10:45.

The man in the film for Green Valley Centre, has sadly died, our

:10:45.:10:52.

thoughts go to his friends and family. It is the award for Best

:10:52.:10:58.

Charity Project. A woman who has overcome incredible odds to become

:10:58.:11:03.

a business entrepeneur and one of the finest dragons in the den,

:11:03.:11:13.
:11:13.:11:22.

welcome the irrepressible Hillary De Vay.

:11:22.:11:26.

My thanks, thank you. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm delighted to be here

:11:26.:11:32.

this evening to present the award for the Best Voluntary and Charity

:11:32.:11:39.

Project. From giving young people the skills required to lead

:11:39.:11:45.

independent lives, to offering support to women who have been

:11:45.:11:50.

affected by domestic violence, abuse and finally to help break

:11:50.:11:57.

down barriers for people who deaf or hearing impaired. The nominees

:11:57.:12:02.

in this catagory have one common goal, and that is, to change

:12:02.:12:06.

people's lives for the better. Shall we take a look at them in

:12:06.:12:16.
:12:16.:12:17.

action. The Dean and Cauvin Trust provides

:12:17.:12:22.

guidance for young people coming out of care. I was living in

:12:22.:12:27.

residential care, when I was 16 I could have been put straight into

:12:27.:12:34.

my own tendency, but thankfully I got trefrd. We offer practical

:12:34.:12:38.

living skills, and emotional support. I was bombarding them with

:12:38.:12:42.

calls about council tax, housing benefit. We work with them to try

:12:42.:12:47.

to integrate them more into the community and become less isolated.

:12:47.:12:50.

It turned my life around for the better. It is maizeing to see the

:12:50.:12:56.

young people reach their potential. Oasis Domestic Abuse Centre offers

:12:56.:13:00.

refuge and support for women and children who have suffered abuse in

:13:00.:13:06.

the home. Oasis offers help to those who feel vulnerable and very

:13:06.:13:08.

often isolated. The opportunity to contact someone and not judge what

:13:08.:13:13.

they are going through. The only thing I remember from the attack is

:13:13.:13:17.

seeing his fist coming at me, months and months after that,

:13:17.:13:21.

flashbacks. I wanted to die. Without Oasis I don't think I would

:13:21.:13:26.

have gone on to the next phase of recovery. We're committed to

:13:26.:13:32.

helping families and trying to see them grow up healthier and happier.

Time for the next award of the evening, it is the Best Sports

:20:27.:20:34.

project, to present it, please welcome Olympic silver medallists,

:20:34.:20:38.

Colin Jackson, and someone who will give him a run for his money, and

:20:38.:20:48.
:20:48.:20:53.

lottery funded Attlee, Hannah Well, winning medals feels pretty

:20:53.:20:58.

good. What feels even better is seeing people who wouldn't normally

:20:58.:21:00.

have access to sports facilities, being given the opportunity to get

:21:00.:21:06.

out there and have a go. So many sports projects and organisations

:21:06.:21:09.

across the country wouldn't exist without lottery funding and the

:21:09.:21:12.

nominations this year show what a difference this can make to

:21:12.:21:20.

people's lives. Lottery funding has enabled the

:21:20.:21:23.

Chase Trails Cycle Project to build cycle tracks in the staff for

:21:24.:21:30.

theshire countryside. In the year of the trail being hope, -

:21:30.:21:33.

Staffordshire countryside. In the year it opened thousands of people

:21:33.:21:38.

rode on the trail. It is fun and keeps you fit. There is a

:21:38.:21:41.

misconception that people think mountain biking is just for the

:21:41.:21:45.

hardcore mountain biker, the reality is there is a huge range of

:21:46.:21:48.

people. The Bluebird Care Hamshire Disability Cricket Programme no

:21:48.:21:54.

only empowers disabled people to play. But also coaches cricket as

:21:54.:21:57.

well. We will do a basic fielding drill. Getting involved in sport

:21:57.:22:02.

does improve their co-ordination, their ability to take part, the

:22:02.:22:06.

general health. Being able to play cricket, to me, is really important,

:22:06.:22:14.

it gives me a focus in life, friendship, a sense of team work.

:22:14.:22:21.

Basically cricket is my life. Active run a scheme for people who

:22:21.:22:26.

don't have access to sport. Active Newcastle is designed to get more

:22:26.:22:31.

people active in Newcastle more often, we take exercise to where

:22:31.:22:36.

people want to exercise and where places are more accessible. We run

:22:36.:22:41.

sessions in school halls, parks and in businesses. Having class at work

:22:41.:22:45.

is so convenient, you know a lot of the people who come any way. Very

:22:46.:22:49.

important when you are stuck in the house as a new mum to get out and

:22:49.:22:54.

be active as well. We are having a positive effect, people are being

:22:54.:23:02.

motivated to go out and do a bit more.

:23:02.:23:05.

APPLAUSE The award goes to. The Bluebird

:23:05.:23:15.
:23:15.:23:34.

Care Hamshire Disability Cricket It's unbelievable, thank you so

:23:34.:23:38.

much to everyone who supported us, the lottery money has made a huge

:23:38.:23:41.

impact in Hampshire. It is incredible to win the award and

:23:41.:23:45.

have that recognition. A very big thanks to all the volunteers who

:23:46.:23:48.

give their time to help disabled people play cricket, our national

:23:48.:23:52.

game, to give them access and a chance to be included in mainstream

:23:52.:24:02.
:24:02.:24:02.

cricket clubs, thank you very much indeed. Our next catagory is the

:24:02.:24:06.

education award, in association with Best Magazine. To present it

:24:06.:24:10.

is a man who works tirelessly for better education in science,

:24:10.:24:17.

medicine and the arts. He has a brain the size of a planet, please

:24:17.:24:27.
:24:27.:24:29.

welcome Professor Robert Winston. It's a real privilege to be

:24:29.:24:33.

involved with an educational award, I must tell you, it is something I

:24:33.:24:38.

feel very strongly about. No matter who the pupil or the subject,

:24:38.:24:42.

trying to find a way to teach someone things and give them

:24:42.:24:45.

confidence and learn what they have been taught, it is an important

:24:45.:24:49.

skill. The organisations nominated for this award are here because

:24:49.:24:54.

they give people an education that has a lasting effect. And the

:24:54.:24:59.

nominees for the Best Education Project are these:

:24:59.:25:03.

Community Horticultural Enterprise run programmes in how to live a

:25:03.:25:07.

sustainable life. We work with the community in helping them to

:25:07.:25:12.

realise their full potential, how to live healthily, and how to eat

:25:12.:25:15.

healthily. We're about fixing and trying to help the community from

:25:15.:25:21.

the bottom up. The best thing I would like to grow is strawberries.

:25:21.:25:26.

I like coming down here and growing the vegtables all the time. It is a

:25:26.:25:30.

hobby for them, it gives them an interest, it is the best thing in

:25:30.:25:38.

the area. Duchenne is a muscular industry.

:25:38.:25:43.

has related and learning problems, that have often gone unnoticed and

:25:43.:25:47.

unrecognised. A literacy scheme has been designed specifically for

:25:47.:25:54.

their needs. It has helped my reading and how I say words. It has

:25:55.:25:58.

made a great improvement, I think it would help lots of other

:25:58.:26:03.
